Southwest Business Many people may not realize that when Southwest® first took to the skies in 1971, we started out as an airline geared toward business travel. We offered everyday low fares, convenient flights, and reliable service to Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio (or, as we affectionately refer to those three cities, the Texas Triangle). The initial idea was to take business travelers out of their cars and bring them into the air. This concept worked then, and it still works today. Many of our Customers travel with us for personal reasons, but business travel
is and has always been critically important to our success. In order to continue providing our business travelers with superior service, we’ve made some big changes to make it even easier for our Customers to travel on their favorite airline for that important meeting. In August, we officially launched Southwest Business, which is focused on bringing a new suite of services and travel solutions to corporate travel managers and business travelers across the country. We expanded our Account Management Team, introduced a new
Business-to-Business Partner desk (for qualified accounts), and deployed a refreshed SWABIZ® booking tool that makes it easier for business travelers to choose Southwest for their corporate travel needs. Southwest Business will become industry standard through our partnerships with Travelport and Amadeus and participation within their global distribution systems. When my mom took ill while vacationing in Arizona, my sister and I flew in from Pittsburgh to assist our other sister, who was already there helping. The doctor eventually cleared my mom to fly home, and, thankfully, we made it to Pittsburgh without any major issues. After everyone else had deboarded, we walked to the jet bridge to get my mom’s wheelchair. Ramp Agent Robert H. heard me express concern about getting my mom into her wheelchair and off the plane, and immediately offered to help. I took him to my mom and said, “Bubbie, this is Robert. He’s going to help you.” He stood in front of her and said, “Bubbie, give me a hug,” which is the way they teach you to help elders when you’re lifting them from a chair. As he gently transferred my mom to the wheelchair and escorted her off the plane, he commented, “I miss my Bubbie.” His sentiment for his grandmother melted our hearts. Robert’s assistance meant more than we can ever say. It was a simple gesture on his part, but it is something we will never forget. —Southwest Customer Susan S.

My family was at the airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico, about to head home to Indianapolis via a connecting flight in Orlando, Florida. Customer Service Agent Gilberto R. B. was in the process of checking our luggage when we learned that our flight had been delayed due to a network issue. He worked diligently to try to find us other flight options but, unfortunately, nothing could get us home that day, so we were going to have to spend the night in Orlando. Again, Gilberto jumped in to help. He provided food vouchers to use during our extended time at the San Juan airport, booked us on the earliest flight out of Orlando the following day, and gave us Southwest travel vouchers to apply to a future flight. He even handwrote excuses for our kids to give their teachers to explain why they missed school. Gilberto went above and beyond to turn a bad situation into a cheerful memory. —Southwest Customer Steven C.
After spending a week in Connecticut visiting my mother in her nursing home, I was heading home to Las Vegas via Chicago. When I left, my mother’s health was bad but stable. When I landed at MDW, I had a text telling me that my mother’s kidneys had shut down and she was being moved to hospice. I frantically approached Customer Service Agent Kwanda R. at the gate and explained what had happened. Kwanda immediately sprang into action and booked me on the first flight back to BDL in Connecticut. She made several calls to ensure my bags would be sent to BDL instead of Las Vegas, and then left to go move the bags herself to make sure my luggage made it on the plane. Because Kwanda went that extra mile, I reached my mom that night and was able to spend the next three days with her until she passed away. I want to thank Alex Macon for his in-depth article [“Dairy Queen,” July 2019] about the famous butter cow and its roots as an egalitarian symbol. I grew up in Brooklyn but am the daughter of a proud Iowan, so I can truly relate to the symbolism and influence of the butter cow. The Iowa State Fair has meant more to me than I could have ever imagined, and I’m so grateful for my memories of seeing the “Last Supper” butter sculpture many moons ago. As a little girl, I loved the novelty of the Americana that I missed out on growing up in New York City. Alex’s article brought back all those memories, from the smells of cotton candy to the sticky floor. Before reading this story, I didn’t know about the painstaking detail that goes into creating such a work of art. Thank you, Alex, for bringing back those magical moments that never really left me. But it’s down to the moment of truth: What do you want to watch? According to The Nielsen Total Audience Report for Q1 2019, that decision takes the average adult a little more than seven minutes. a really strong executive leadership team sponsor. Typically, that should be your CEO or CFO. That’s going to involve making the business folks available to learn the system and prototype. Where people tend to go wrong is they go about customizing the system to suit their business, which
implies a deviation from standard. As soon as you do that, your maintenance costs and your ongoing run costs go up significantly. You want to fit to standard. Also, be very clear on the anticipated benefits. They need to be quantifiable and specific in terms of revenue improvement and cost reduction, as well as in risk mitigation that would result from the system and which specific people are going to be impacted. According to a survey conducted by global staffing firm Robert Half, more than half of us would be willing to swap locations to start a new gig. For 44 percent of workers polled, a higher salary and better perks would be the deciding factor in making the jump, while 16 percent said they might pull up roots if career advancement’s on the table. The older we get, though, the less eager we are to change it up: Compared to 76 percent of professionals ages 18–34, only 40 percent of those 55 and older were up for relocating. Ten years ago, I went through a slump in my career. I had won an Emmy and a Peabody, I had made a lot of money, and I had famous friends. But all of a sudden, it dried up, and I utterly mishandled the situation. I let that frustration bleed over into my personal life. But it’s unproductive to panic or lose sleep, especially in a creative field where your stock in trade is having a free, open mind. I realized I needed to pull myself up by the bootstraps and concentrate on why I made the career choice that I did. When life throws you a curveball, take personal responsibility and remember the things that bring you joy—your family or working with a grassroots charity or even golf. Whatever it is, remember what helped you out of the pit in the past.

Both rugged and cosmopolitan, Utah’s capital combines a love of outdoor adventure with eclectic cultural offerings. BY MILES HOWARD
n the summer of 1847, a bearded man named Brigham Young looked out from the sun-bleached foothills of Salt Lake Valley to survey the territory below. The second president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints had arrived to the region by wagon train, entering an improbably nourishing ecosystem surrounded by harsh, but often beautiful, elements: desert, craggy peaks, and, just for the hell of it, a 240-mile fault line capable of causing landslides. This was the place, Young realized, where members of the religious community he led would build a city and begin anew.
On a sultry July evening, 172 years later, I’m sitting near those same foothills where Young first saw Salt Lake Valley. But the object of my attention isn’t the landscape: It’s the outdoor stage at Red Butte Garden, a charming botanical garden and one of Salt Lake City’s most romantic music venues. The lawn before the stage is filled with tanned concertgoers sipping wine from plastic cups, and the sun is painting us shades of burnt orange. Like the singer, I’ve journeyed here from far away. I suspect many of the people dancing on the lawn tonight are travelers, too. By the time the sun sinks behind the hills, Seal has removed his shirt and my glass of zinfandel has been refilled. I’ve only been in Salt Lake City for a couple of hours. And although this music, and this scene, don’t seem tailored to my usual interests, I am strangely at ease. That was my hope before coming: to feel at home in this storied city. My comfort isn’t an accident. Generations of rolling stones have traveled far and wide and found themselves here, creating a shared sense of belonging—together.

all leaves me with two recommendations—for an experimental art gallery as well as a pastry purveyor called Eva’s Bakery. I make a beeline to the latter and order a black pepper and Parmesan croissant so savory and buttery that I return to the counter and order another for the road. I wander down University Boulevard, leaving a trail of flaky croissant crumbs in my wake, and within 10 minutes, I reach the Saturday farmers market at Pioneer Park. Everything you could want from a farmers market is here: crisp vegetables from regional growers, grass-fed beef jerky samples from regional livestock, a young woman playing Vivaldi on a violin, and, just for good measure, a guy pulling a red wagon full of puppies. The restaurant scene here has earned accolades from national publications and tastemakers. And people are willing to carve out the time to wait for a killer meal.

he economic fuel propelling Salt Lake City has changed over the years. Agriculture, mining, banking, and software development are among the services and industries that have brought prosperity to the city. Today, SLC is adding new high-paying, high-skill jobs in bioengineering and cloud computing. (This hilly region in Utah has been nicknamed “Silicon Slopes.”) Financial services firms like Fidelity have opened offices here. And increasingly, SLC is playing host to convention business, with hotel rooms filling during gatherings at the vast and gleaming Salt Palace Convention Center downtown. I’m staying just a few steps away from the Salt Palace at the colorful Hotel Monaco, which occupies a historic building that dates back to the 1860s. Lively curtains and carpeting, chic furniture, and the towering headboard on my bed all evoke an old-school grandeur that contrasts with the sleek, silvery high-rises sprouting up across downtown. Change is also happening here on a human scale. Utah ranked among the top three fastest-growing states in the U.S. in 2018, with much of that population boom coming in the Salt Lake City area. That doesn’t mean the city has lost its underdog spirit. On my first morning in town, I meet up with Trent Call, an artist whose work adorns several of the buildings near my hotel. His most well-known creation is a gonzo mural that fashions basketball players as retro cartoon characters. The mural was commissioned by the city’s own Utah Jazz, the perennial NBA underdogs that have often had brushes with greatness and have always been supported by one of the most loyal fanbases in the country. To hear Call tell it, that loyalty, along with the bargain cost of living in SLC, has kept him rooted here since the early ’80s. “It’s always been easy to live here, with rent for a studio or house being reasonable,” Call says as we gawk up at his Jazz mural. “That’s really why I stayed. The community helps each other.” Call leads me on a walk through downtown, past the vivid artwork decorating the buildings here. On the backside of a bank, beneath layers of eroding material, I can glimpse flashes of color: ancient graffiti that was painted over and lost to history, only to re-emerge later, as Salt Lake City expands and bustles its way forward into the 21st century.

Public transit moves happy couples and solo travelers around the city.
This is impressed upon me when I walk over to Fairpark, an arbor-filled neighborhood west of downtown. A healthy crowd is amassed outside a Mexican restaurant called the Red Iguana—an SLC institution—and everybody seems happy. It’s refreshing compared to the moodier, more passive aggressive human queues you’ll encounter outside the hottest restaurants in bigger cities. I add my name to the list and make small talk with some teenagers visiting from Denver, who recommend a hike to a place called “The Living Room.” More on that later. Once the hostess ushers me inside, I order one of the house specialties: sirloin tips sautéed with bacon, jalapeno strips, onions, and tomatoes, and served atop a mind-numbingly delicious golden almond mole. Stuffed, I catch a ride on the UTA TRAX light rail. The transportation system here is surprisingly well-developed for such a relatively small city. Among other stops, the rail connects downtown SLC to the University of Utah and Salt Lake City International Airport, which is in the midst of a major expansion, while a network of commuter trains and buses provides further access to nearby ski resorts and various hot spots. When I disembark, I find myself standing downtown before the Salt Lake Temple, a soaring house of worship in the heart of the city. Although the inside of the temple is open only to church members, this site draws visitors from near and far. The surrounding 10-acre Temple Square is the spiritual and institutional center of the 16 million member-strong Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints and one of SLC’s most popular tourist destinations. For good reason: This place is impressive. The towers of the temple remind me of magic citadels from books that I devoured as a kid. While I’m at Temple Square, I decide to check out the Family History Library, which is exactly what it sounds like. The world’s largest genealogical library, run by the church, allows visitors to chart their own family history through collected public records. I sit down at a desktop computer and, before I know it, I’m digging deep into the Howard family past, discovering relatives from rural Newfoundland who might have bestowed Canadian citizenship upon me had their kids not migrated south to the American colonies. When I leave the library and step into the late afternoon haze, I’m struck by how my first engagement with the church hinged on the art of exploration—just like all my initial stops in SLC. Whether it’s an internationally inspired meal you didn’t know you’d find, or relatives you never knew you had, SLC seems to encourage a spirit of inquiry. I shouldn’t be surprised by this: SLC, after all, was born in an era of westward expansion. As I’ll soon learn, that shared sense of curiosity—and the thrill of discovery—can have a unifying effect on towns like SLC, which is more diverse than you might think.

run beginning at City Creek Park. The entrance is just a few steps beyond Temple Square. It’s a particularly idyllic example of how SLC makes stepping into the natural world seem effortless. After a breakfast of eggs, quinoa, and kale at Pulp Lifestyle Kitchen, I trek over to the offices of SLUG Magazine. In publication for over 30 years, SLUG, an acronym for “Salt Lake Underground,” has consistently pushed the envelope of culture in SLC, spotlighting the creators behind the city’s art, food, and music scenes. I’m here to hang out with Angela Brown, owner and executive editor of the magazine. The editorial office, which is decorated with framed posters and paintings, is full of young people typing away on desktop computers. A lumbering hound named Hondo joins Brown and me as we head downstairs to a studio where SLUG records podcasts and interviews. The magazine also organizes events like Brewstillery, Utah’s all-local gathering of craft brewers and distillers. The existence of such a boozy festival in the hometown of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints may surprise visitors, but Salt Lake City’s culture provides a bigger and more inclusive tent than many people realize, Brown says. “We have regular contributors, local bishops, who are still passionate about SLUG,” she says. “I see [us] really working on inclusivity. We want our culture to change, and we want Salt Lake City to change and grow and blossom.”
Park City / Skiers
and snowboarders of all experience levels have some choices to make at this sprawling resort. For the snowaverse, there’s plenty of places to eat, drink, and play.
Later that day, I hear a similar sentiment at Ken Sanders Rare Books, an enormous used bookstore whose exterior is emblazoned with a portrait of the late Utah labor activist Joe Hill and the words “Come in and remember what a book smells like.” Sanders, a gregarious fellow with a long beard, has been tracking down and selling books since his teens. “I wheeled and dealed comic books, two for a nickel, when I was in grade school,” he tells me. “Mostly as a means of funding my own collection.” Appearances on PBS’ Antiques Roadshow put Sanders on the map for many collectors, but the bookstore has long been a reliable place for SLC natives and visitors. There are young people plopped on couches leafing through ancient hardcovers. A nearby shelf features a robust collection of Edward Abbey paperbacks, along with a rusty wrench, a wry ode to The Monkey Wrench Gang, Abbey’s novel about an environmental saboteur. Sanders describes his bookstore as a safe space for wandering souls. As long as you’re curious enough to enter the maze

my destination, I stumble upon a little park called Hidden Hollow. It’s a leafy glen tucked between shopping centers, and a chuckling brook runs through it. I pick a meandering concrete path and walk alongside the brook. There are other people out tonight. Some of them are jogging. Two young parents are pushing a stroller, and one older guy is sitting on a bench, watching the water and listening to it ripple. I know what I’m doing tomorrow.

n many places, getting outside of your element requires a long journey. Not for residents of Salt Lake City. I kick off the next morning by driving just north of the city to cross the long bridge to Antelope Island State Park. Spanning 42 square miles on the Great Salt Lake’s southeastern shore, the park is home to bison, elk, and, yes, antelope. The island’s pinnacle, Frary Peak, is among the more popular natural wonders you’ll encounter here. Still adjusting to the Utah heat, I take an easier hike to Ladyfinger Point on the northern side of the island. Later, I glimpse bison grazing near the bottom of a hillside. My next stop is the Wasatch Range itself. I ascend into the mountains by taking I-80 from SLC to Park City, which involves an elevation gain of nearly 3,000 feet and puts some hair on the transmission of my rental Ford Fiesta. Park City is known for hosting the Sundance Film Festival, and it’s where much of the infrastructure for the 2002 Winter Olympics was built and remains in use. I rendezvous with Kim Brown, a creative director for a catalog company who I first met at the Seal

of bookshelves with an open mind, you’re likely to find something worth savoring. “I’ve done some really fabulous hikes, from Australia to Utah,” Sanders tells me. “And the whole point of going on the hike—or going on the hunt for a book—is to not know what you’re seeking, and to find it.” I’d love to spend the rest of the day roaming this literary labyrinth, but travel writing duty beckons, so Sanders sends me off with a fresh copy of Charles Bowden’s Blood Orchid, an unflinching and often devastating history of man’s relationship with the natural world. I take the light rail up into SLC’s eastern foothills, to the Natural History Museum of Utah. I spend the next hour listening to descendants of Utah’s Native American tribes as they recount their hard-won struggle for tribal sovereignty in Utah and nearby states. These video testimonials are just one piece of the museum’s stunning and deeply moving Native Voices exhibition. And something of an epiphany is beginning to emerge. The land here in Salt Lake Valley has cast a sustaining spell on one generation after the next. As the sun goes down and I take a stroll through Sugar House—a bucolic residential neighborhood and home to Westminster College, Utah’s only accredited liberal arts college—I’m reminded of the humility that nature can inspire in humans. Perhaps there’s something universal about feeling tiny and wondrous in the face of mountains and desert— something that can bring people together. I’m heading to nearby Wasatch Brew Pub for a beer, but before I reach

concert. An avid hiker, she’s the perfect person to take me up the Moose Puddle Trail, which begins right next to an active bobsledding course. As we climb through birches and wildflowers, the sound of sleds whizzing down the tracks echoes from below. Mountain bikers rumble past on the ribbon-like trail as we break through the tree line and step out onto a breezy ridge. Later, for dinner back in SLC, I’ve managed to snag a reservation at Log Haven, the mountain hideaway of a steel tycoon that’s since been refashioned into a gourmet dining oasis. To reach the restaurant, I drive deep into Millcreek Canyon, leave my car with a valet, and climb a pathway to the chic lodge. A wedding reception is taking place in the courtyard, so I’m seated in the dining room, right in front of a window facing a silvery waterfall. When my grilled bison steak with sweet potato orzo and smoky succotash arrives, it’s almost too much. Almost. A meal at a joint like Log Haven could be the capstone to a busy day. But when I stagger down the path to my car, it’s 7 o’clock, the sun is still up, and I’m
reminded of something I had been urged to do. I slide my hiking boots back on, get in the car, and set my phone’s GPS for The Living Room Trail. Located right by the University of Utah campus—not too far from the Red Butte Garden—this short, challenging trail takes visitors up to a scenic ledge on Mount Wire. There, I’m told, people have arranged stones to resemble sofas. I walk up the trail, sweating, huffing, hoping to reach the ledge before sundown. I meet students, families, and solo wanderers like myself. By the time I arrive at the overlook, I’m heartened to find that a few of the “sofas” are occupied by hikers drinking in the vista. I gaze out at SLC, a blinking grid of activity far below. It’s a very different view than the one Brigham Young saw when he took his first gander at the valley. What I see as the sun goes down is a rebuttal of the idea that the American West is a wilderness of rugged individualism. Sure, you can find that out here. But in Salt Lake City, I found a welcoming community bound together by a love of exploration and discovery. This town is a living testament to the possibilities of human collaboration. See the world and you’ll be a better judge of everything. That’s what retired Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor taught the women and men who worked for her. / BY EVAN THOMAS

hen Sandra Day O’Connor graduated near the top of her class from Stanford Law School in 1952, she called at least 40 law firms looking for a job. Only one would even give her an interview. The partner asked, “How well do you type?” She said she didn’t want to be a legal secretary. O’Connor went on to have astonishing success in the law and became the first ever woman on the U.S. Supreme Court (appointed by President Reagan in 1981). Today, at a time when half of all law students are women, her achievement is perhaps easy to take for granted. Justice O’Connor, who is 89 years old and suffering from dementia, is not as well-known as Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who joined the Court in 1993, 12 years after O’Connor, october 2019 Southwest 61

Raised in the harsh and demanding world of a cattle ranch in the Arizona high desert, O’Connor was a no-excuses boss. She was not easy with

One year, some clerks took a photocopy of her hand and taped it on the wall of their office under a sign that said, “If you want a pat on the back, lean here.” But the clerks also understood how much she cared about them as people, and that they were receiving more than

but she was a trailblazer in her own way. O’Connor did not use the word “feminist,” and she was not an activist for women’s rights, yet she played a huge role advancing them. She knew what it was to be a role model for women and would say, “It’s good to be first, but you don’t want to be the last.” In public, O’Connor came across as a combination of tough cowgirl and country-club Republican—smart and stylish when she was a younger woman, and then a little matronly, but always with flashing, almost piercing eyes. She could be at once intimidating and warm. During her 25 years on the Supreme Court, and for many years after her retirement in 2006, she acted as both mentor and model to scores of women, especially her law clerks. About half of O’Connor’s hundred-odd law clerks were women. Supreme Court law clerks not only research but also help write a justice’s opinions; they usually are the top grads from the best schools. O’Connor chose hers not just for their brains, which were a given, but for their personalities and varied life experiences (one had swum the English 62 Southwest october 2019

legal training in her chambers. “She was actually modeling a balanced life,” says Lisa Kern Griffin, who worked for O’Connor in 1997 and ’98. “Make time for your family. Take care of yourself. Experience the outdoors and get some exercise. Have a sense of the wider culture. Enjoy lively dinner parties and a varied circle of friends. Never be above taking care of people. It was really unusual. We were getting not just an apprenticeship in law but an apprenticeship in life.” O’Connor herself was probably the most social Supreme Court justice in history (a low bar, admittedly; most justices live cloistered lives). She went out often in the evening to dances and parties, concerts, and shows. She was also almost certainly the most traveled justice ever. In 1997, O’Connor achieved her goal of speaking in every state (the last was West Virginia). In part, she was practicing what she preached: Women achieved power, she believed, by

putting themselves out there, by being visible and accomplished. Travel, at home and abroad, broadened her horizons in ways that affected her judging, making her sensitive to different outlooks while deepening her appreciation for the rule of law. She also went for the joy of experience. A lifelong sportswoman,
she was a low-handicap golfer and expert skier. She was an avid, if somewhat impatient, fly-fisher and bird-watcher. On her trips, she could often be found in waders or on a horse. On one fishing trip to Alaska, she fended off a grizzly with a can of bear spray. As a girl, Sandra Day spent hours poring over old National

Geographic magazines. It filled her with a wanderlust that took her to China and India, to Argentina, Africa, and the Middle East, Australia and New Zealand, and all over Europe—again and again. Her capacity to race across time zones was jaw-dropping. She once interrupted a legal gathering in London to fly to Tokyo and back—18 hours in the air, each way, over one weekend—to fulfill a promise to address a women’s conference. “It is not a pleasing prospect,” she wrote in her journal (underlining “not”), “but I cannot disappoint the Japanese women who are counting on me and who are trying to attain better opportunities in the work force.” She did all this traveling while serving as a Supreme Court justice. The court hears cases from October through April, freeing up a large chunk of the summer to globe-trot, but she also squeezed in trips on weeks when the court was not hearing oral argument. She traveled with other justices but often alone or with her husband and preferred using carry-on luggage. Her law clerks were in awe. She did her best to include them on cultural outings, taking them to museums all over Washington and on brisk walks down Capitol Hill to the Tidal Basin to see the cherry blossoms at their peak bloom. An outing to the National Arboretum was not exactly a stroll in the park. “This wasn’t quite stopping to smell the roses,” recalls Stuart Banner, who clerked for O’Connor in 1991 and ’92. “It was more like speeding up to smell the roses. And learning why they smelled the way they did. And how one could become a better rose smeller.” The clerks did their best to keep up. On a whitewater rafting trip in southern Pennsylvania, the rafting guide carefully instructed the group that if anyone fell out of the boat, no one was to play the hero and jump in to the rescue, because then the guide would have to rescue two people. On the raging river, O’Connor flipped out of the boat.

Just because O’Connor wanted her young mentees to get out there and enjoy life didn’t mean that they could skip out on work. Encountering her clerks still laboring away, she said, “Go home, you’re working too hard!” One of the clerks, Noah Levine, responded, “OK, does that mean you don’t need this memo first thing in the morning?” O’Connor responded, “No, I want the memo in the a.m.” The clerks shrugged, packed up, and followed
the justice to the elevator. She went down to her car, and the clerks walked around the block, and then went back to work, laughing. The life that O’Connor was modeling would be a challenge for anyone, but O’Connor had an off-the-charts energy level and an almost supernatural capacity to focus on the task at hand. She got across her message. Today, her former law clerks are professors and top corporate counsels, Supreme Court advocates and federal judges; they are also wives, mothers, husbands, and fathers. As engaged citizens, they remember her lesson and her example—to be out and around, curious and vital, and not mere drudges to the job. How desperate are my children for a pet? Let's put it this way: Recently, they cosigned a five-page contract—painstakingly composed by my 12-year-old, Josie—pledging not to fight for an entire year in exchange for the pet of their choice. As of this writing, Josie has gone 23 days without a fight, eclipsing her previous record by 22-and-a-half days. I should confess here that my wife, Erin, would be happy to get a pet. She often indulges the kids by looking online at stray cats and dogs and (God help us) baby pigs. I’m the one holding up the acquisition. And the reasons I cite are all eminently reasonable: Our house is too small, we travel too much, we’re completely stressed out already. But the real reason I can’t pull the trigger is because I know, deep down, that no pet will ever live up to Greg Almond, the cat I had in childhood. And by childhood, I mean that Greg lived with us from the time I was 5 until well after I’d left home for college. Greg came to us with a brother, Tiger, though just a few years later Tiger was hit by a car in front of our house. Strange as it may seem, we were young enough that we somehow thought it necessary to bring Tiger inside the house and show him to Greg. This is part of why Greg Almond meant so much to us, I think:
We had shared an early, intense experience of death. I realize that Greg Almond is an absurd name for a feline, by the way. It did not derive from the rock musician Gregg Allman, though the origin of the name is—like virtually every aspect of our childhood—a matter of some dispute. I’d always heard that we chose Greg because he had a gray coat with an egg-shaped white patch on his chest (gray plus egg equals Greg). My older brother Dave claims he bestowed the name in honor of the oldest brother on The Brady Bunch. I also realize that every pet owner on earth believes his or her animal is special. I’m not here to argue that point. I can only tell you that Greg was, in a very real sense, the emotional glue of our family. He was the most empathic creature of any species I’ve ever encountered. What else can you say about a cat that worried about us so much he actually followed us to school? He did this over and over, each day, lingering until my two brothers and I reluctantly carried him home. Mind you, he wasn’t any sort of fancy breed, a Russian blue or a Chartreux. He was just a shelter cat with kind green eyes and a preternatural ability to read our moods and provide us comfort. You see, I grew up in a family that was far more fractious than the one Erin and I preside over. My parents were loving but distracted professionals who gave us the run of the house. My brothers and I turned it into a battlefield, fighting constantly, often physically and at times viciously. I can still remember the feeling of those clashes, the fear and rage that flushed through us, the hammering of our fists and hearts. But what I remember even more vividly is how, after each of these

altercations, Greg Almond would quietly pad into my room and leap onto my bed to console me. He did this in small physical ways: licking at my bruised knuckles, nuzzling my chin. “I see Greg’s making his rounds,” my dad said to me, after one particularly nasty brawl. Because, of course, Greg did the same thing for my brothers, too. He sensed our pain. And not just the physical kind. Whenever I felt sad— spurned by my brothers or humiliated by the world at large—Greg would appear to offer succor. He behaved like what would now be called a service animal. And our parents understood how important Greg was to us, so much so that he was essentially treated like another sibling. My twin brother, Mike, reminded me of the time that we were pulled from our class and ordered to report to the front office, so that our dad could tell us that Greg had survived his kidney surgery. “Is Greg your brother?” asked the woman at the front desk, sympathetically. “Nope, he’s our cat,” Mike replied. “Dad wouldn’t have called us out of class if it was just a brother.” He was only half-kidding.
twins: one, the angel of mercy, the other, the agent of vengeance. Like any true angel, Greg seemed capable of the miraculous. One time, he curled up for a nap in the back of my mom’s station wagon. She didn’t realize he was there until she arrived at my grandparents’ house. She ran inside to return a serving dish and when she came back to the car, Greg had escaped out a window. Unable to find him, my mom returned home to break the bad news. Our grandparents lived 5 miles away, in a neighboring town, with half a dozen major roads in between. Greg had a flea collar

Greg’s instinctual empathy was all the more remarkable because our home was not an easy place for cats to live. As should be clear, my brothers and I had anger issues, and we sometimes took this out on our pets, treating them roughly. The effect this treatment had on the cat we got a few years later to keep Greg company (a black bruiser we dubbed Butch) was immediate and striking. Butch became the neighborhood bully, and he clawed at us (rather sensibly) if we came too close. Looking back, it seems to me that Butch channeled the free-floating aggression in our home, while Greg tried, heroically, to comfort the hurt boys beneath our hurting. It was like they were dark
on but no other identification. We knew we’d never see him again. My brothers and I were high schoolers by then, well into our sullen teen years. But we were utterly (if quietly) disconsolate. Five days later, we were sitting at the breakfast table talking about Greg, more or less in the past tense, when he suddenly appeared at the back window, emaciated, missing a portion of his left ear, but intact. I’ve always privately regarded this event as quasi-religious: the Resurrection of Greg Almond. I’ve tried to explain all this to my kids, of course, so they understand my reluctance to get another pet. They’re not buying it. “If you loved one pet so much, you can love another one,” Josie told me as I signed her no-fighting-for-a-year contract. She only has 342 days left to prove her point. work from home, in the blissful quiet away from the bustle of the world. I love solitude but don’t like being alone, which could be an impossible paradox—if it weren’t for dogs. Time alone with your dog does not mean being lonely. Recently, deep in thought about a new project, I absentmindedly stood up from my desk and began to pace around my office. During one of these circuits, I became aware that Walter, my 7-month-old, 115-pound wolfhound, was walking with me, step for step. Silently. Seriously. A close, quiet shadow to my left. A partner in my solitude. I laughed at the dearness of what he was doing. As we looked deeply into each other’s eyes, he “smiled” with a relaxed expression and wagged his long tail. When I hugged this great, wiry-coated guy, he leaned into me and I could feel his chest expand as he slowly inhaled and then exhaled in a familiar sigh of contentment. Then I got back to work. More focused, and a little happier. OK, a lot happier. Walter is tall, still growing, rangy, and full of youthful enthusiasm, so in general, I wouldn’t describe him as subtle. Except in moments like these. And I know there are more coming. Many more, because I have so gratefully shared my life, including my solitary moments, with dogs. But isn’t the very idea of sharing solitude a contradiction? About a hundred years ago, the essayist and naturalist John Burroughs made clear that he didn’t think so. He wrote that with a dog, “You are alone and not alone; you have both companionship and solitude.” It’s an idea that has intrigued me, and I’ve known so many others who have expressed this same sentiment: that their dogs have provided soul mate-level company without interfering with contemplation. In fact, they’ve enhanced it. I turned to the experts, starting with Alexandra Horowitz—she’s been thinking, writing about, and analyzing this unique relationship with dogs as head of the Dog Cognition Lab at Barnard College, Columbia University. She’s also shared her insights in wildly popular books—among them the best-selling Inside of a Dog: What Dogs See, Smell, and Hear, and the recently released Our Dogs, Ourselves: The Story of a Singular Bond. “With some exceptions, dogs don’t intrude on our solitude,” she wrote to me in an email. “My dog may bark or want attention, but they are hugely agreeable to simply sit when we sit, walk when we walk, play when we play. In fact, there is research showing how quickly dogs will follow their person from sitting to walking to standing—even, often,
turned in the [same] direction their person is.” That, of course, reminded me of the little stroll Walter took with me in my office, the one that was less an interruption and more a psychic bolstering. In recent years, there has been a wonderful explosion of scientific inquiry that takes our bonds with dogs and other animals more seriously than ever. Studies illuminate just how smart dogs are, reveal evidence of the ways in which they (and animals in general) connect with us and us with them, and track the benefits of this connection. It’s mutual.
T
here are specially designated labs in universities around the world—like the one Horowitz runs— assessing dog cognition, and there’s a hefty dose of bonding analysis involved, too. There are even imaging labs where dogs are (positively) trained to allow for the latest fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging) to try to “picture” how dogs’ brains work through patterns of brain activity— what they’re thinking and feeling and what they share with us. All of these pieces are part of a puzzle that’s gradually coming together. The human bond with dogs is at least 15,000 years old, maybe more than twice that, and yet we keep discovering more about it. Lately, it’s with cutting-edge technology. Researchers have known for some time that just being with a dog can

lower our heart rate and our blood pressure (happily, it’s reciprocal; studies suggest we lower theirs, too). Research from a university in Hungary that used fMRI technology suggests that, among other things, dogs can distinguish emotional cues in our voices. In particular, I’ve always enjoyed the kinds of observations that are about how dogs can be better companions than the people around us. Dogs can lower our stress even when our closest human connections fail. In the 1990s, medical researchers at the University at Buffalo, The State University of New York monitored the heart rate and blood pressure of hundreds of couples who were given stressful tasks to perform, such as making a speech or solving math problems. The results suggested that your dog will be of more comfort to you in a given stressful situation than your spouse. Research has revealed that petting a dog (or cat, by the way) can reduce stress-related cortisol levels, that dogs are more expressive when we are looking at them, and that those of us who love dogs may live longer, healthier lives with them. A new report just this year has zeroed in on those expressive doggie eyebrows that lift up and, according to the experts, likely cause a nurturing response in us. It seems that the muscle responsible for that sweet puppy dog expression, so lacking in wolves, evolved because it’s something we favored in the canines who live among us. As that eyebrow inquiry suggested, there is something magical and measurable that often happens when we look into each other’s eyes: We feel good. There have been analyses about that chemical connection and the release of oxytocin, the feel-good “love” hormone. Meg Daley Olmert wrote an entire book about it: Made for Each Other: The Biology of the Human-Animal Bond. As Horowitz wrote to me, “If I think about the scientific aspects of dogs that make them such good companions, yes, it’s the oxytocin hit when we pet dogs or gaze at them; it’s their responsiveness to our gaze; [it’s] their looking us in the face, like a partner or friend. It’s also, for me, their being tuned in to aspects of me that I might not be awake to: for instance, their noticing a difference in my behavior when I’m sick or upset. Anecdotally, my dog picked up on my pregnancy before I did; non-anecdotally, we know that they recognize us by our smell, and can find lost humans by theirs. What is more personal than our smell? And yet dogs never complain about it: They revel in it.” Dogs are spectacular beings and individuals, and they’re very much present as their own personalities in the lives of those of us who love them. In our email exchange, I had to agree when
Horowitz kindly balked about labeling time alone with dogs as “solitude.” That’s especially valid if in any way that seems to negate a dog’s own very real presence. So, how do they connect so deeply without making us self-conscious? They certainly don’t achieve that by ignoring us. Horowitz has written that dogs watch us like no other animal watches us. My friend, the naturalist and best-selling author Sy Montgomery, amplified that point to me by phone one afternoon. “No one will see you with as much love,” she said. “They hunger to know us. Dogs have made it their No. 1 job to know what we’re feeling; that’s more than any other animal.” And, in reading us, dogs don’t get hung up on the attributes that we might feel self-conscious about around humans. “Dogs see who you really are,” Sy said. “They don’t care about your eye makeup or if your hair is combed. They see right to your heart, and they don’t get waylaid by that other stuff.” At our best, I hope we do the same for them.

cience may be measuring the way dogs can improve our lives, and Sy even measured her own life by the animals around her in How to Be a Good Creature: A Memoir in Thirteen Animals. Everything I do—writing, reading, running errands, driving—is made infinitely better by the presence of a dog. It’s been that way throughout my life. My parents adopted Penny, our first dog—a glorious collie-type mix—when I was 2 years old. No matter what my social or personal circumstance, I am a better person with a dog. And that seems to only be getting stronger. The older I get, the more they are part of my soul and the less I can part from them. I feel different when I am dogless. My friend Elizabeth Marshall Thomas has described losing a dog as akin to losing a limb. Liz is an original thinker and the author of a number of revelatory books like The Hidden Life of Dogs. Dogs “So a dog is like a body part, as important to us as our arms or legs,” Liz wrote in Tamed and Untamed: Close Encounters of the Animal Kind (a book co-authored by Sy, and for which I wrote the foreword). Liz goes on to say, “If we’re in the bathroom taking a shower and our dog comes in to be together, we are no more embarrassed by her presence than we are by the presence of our legs. But if a person comes in, we might grab a towel, the intruder would back out quickly, and a torrent of apologies would follow.” How do we describe the unique role dogs have in our sense of self? Horowitz has listened in on

In her email, she said, “After much eavesdropping on people talking to their dogs—not the imperative commands, but the one-sided conversations—I began to suspect that dogs play a role similar to the voice in our heads that we have an ongoing conversation with. The one who narrates what you’re doing, reflects on what you’ve done, and plans what you might do in the future. We animate that person in our heads and plant them into the figure of the dog. So we would be no more self-conscious around dogs than we are around ourselves. Maybe less so: Our dogs do not care if our shirts are on backward, we have drooled slightly in our sleep (that might be interesting to them, actually!), or we hum off-key. Other people take us out of our own headspace, but dogs are like our better selves.” For most people, the late Edward Albee, a three-time Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright, is best

known for the play Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? But to me, his name is synonymous with wolfhounds. He wrote a beautiful essay about his hounds and how one, Harry, would express himself in an especially wolfhound-y way to those of us who know them. Albee granted me permission in 2007 to reprint that essay in a wolfhound club newsletter I was editing, and the loveliness of his words and his kindness in giving me that permission sticks with me. Albee and Harry would often sit watching the ocean together, and
he wrote that when he’d ask Harry something like, “Aren’t those great waves?!” that the big dog would lean against him “a little and just … sigh.” So, when I think of dogs enhancing our solitude or becoming so close to us that their presence provides a kind of unselfconscious joy, I’m gratified that we’ve got such an abundance of social and medical science these days validating it all. But I don’t really think of computers, laboratories, or brain activity mapping. I think of a playwright’s magnificent friend Harry and dogs like him who sit with us watching the surf. All kinds of waves improve when we’re with a dog we love. Dance in the Street Carnival celebrations in cities around the world are marked by lively music, dancing, and vibrant festivities. Of course, in Miami,
celebrations featuring lively music, dancing, and vibrant festivities can be found all the time for no reason other than, well, this is Miami. (To be clear, that’s more than enough of a reason.) But Miami Carnival is an especially good time,
distinguished by parades, parties, concerts, and cookouts. And the costumes are always on point. OCTOBER 12 SEATTLE
Light Up the Lake That’s not smoke on the water. These lanterns, set adrift on Green Lake at the Seattle Public Theater, get their soft glow from LED lights. Each lantern is inscribed by festival attendees. You can choose what to float onto the lake, whether it’s an illustration, a poem, or a simple signature. Just don’t expect your message to be discovered later. At the end of the Seattle Water Lantern Festival, crews retrieve the lanterns to leave no environmental trace of the evening’s festivities. What remains, though, is the memory of a remarkable sight, one that may conjure feelings of oneness and peace with the world. At the very least, you’ll swoon at the pretty lights.

Reanimate Yourself Don’t run, don’t walk, but stagger and moan for brains en route to the Reno Zombie Crawl. This night of people dressed as the living dead presents a fun spin on Halloween season carousing, with dozens of downtown bars and casinos participating in drink specials and zombie-themed entertainment. You’ll pay about $10 for a “crawl cup” and a map, which you’ll use for entry into the many parties within walking distance. Daughter of a Cuban Revolutionary (Oct. 9–13 at the Goodman Theatre) is a deeply personal solo show informed by the performer’s family history in Cuba. Hotel-Ó (Oct. 24–27 at the Repertorio Latino Theater Company) is an experimental take on Shakespeare’s Othello, performed in Spanish. The Delicate Tears of the Waning Moon (through Oct. 13 at Steppenwolf’s 1700 Theatre) is a one-act drama about a truth-seeking journalist. The plays included in this year’s Chicago International Latino Theater Festival vary in content, but they all feature Latino voices telling stories of immediate cultural relevance.

Move to the Music Most big music festivals are in the spring and summer, when the sun is shining and people are in the mood for a vacation. In New Orleans, live music and sunshine are a year-round proposition, and vacation is a constant state of mind. The Voodoo Music + Arts Experience at City Park packs in festivalgoers for a Halloween weekend full of local food, brews, and art
installations. This year’s headliners include Beck, Post Malone, and Guns N’ Roses, and you’ll find plenty of gems among the smaller-print names on the lineup. NOVEMBER 1–9 DENVER
Put Art on the Calendar It’s not like you ever need an excuse to visit Denver, which, even on its off days, remains a place rich in culture, natural beauty, and history. Denver Arts Week, however,
is nothing but on days. The schedule is chock-full of more than 300 discounted events showcasing the Mile High City’s best art, music, and theater. Denver claims seven distinct neighborhood art districts. All of them are worth exploring on a “First Friday Art Walk,” when galleries and studios keep late hours. But if you’ve only got one night in town, make it Nov. 2 for “Free Night at the Museums,” when Denver’s biggest museums open late to offer free admission and special programming. You may want to come back for the Denver Art Museum’s wide-ranging exhibition of Claude Monet paintings; that presentation opens on Oct. 21 and runs through Feb. 2. NOVEMBER 7–24 HAWAII
Leave the Beach Behind The Hawaii International Film Festival lives up to the “international” part of its name with a history of showing new, groundbreaking cinema by filmmakers from Asia and the Pacific Islands. (Programmers fill out the schedule with other films from around the world.) The festival can also make a claim to being interisland: Films screen at theaters in Oahu from Nov. 7–17 before jumping to Kauai, Maui, and the Island of Hawaii on Nov. 21. And You Don’t Stop In the late 1970s, the four elements of hip-hop were defined as DJing, rapping, graffiti, and break dancing. Hip-hop has come a long way since then, and break dancing alone hardly does justice to the many styles and forms on display at the San Francisco International Hip Hop DanceFest, which pays tribute to the genre’s past while pushing it into the future. In fact, we might need quite a few more elements to encompass the professional dance companies coming from around the world to perform at the Palace of Fine Arts.

In 1917, a series of photos featuring two English schoolgirls posing serenely with several winged fairies became a sensation. The fairies were eventually proved to be paper models and the girls hoaxers, but the popularity of the “Cottingley Fairies” spoke to the potential of photography to capture fantasy as much as it demonstrated our willingness to accept illusion as reality. Now there is Make Believe, an exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston showcasing the work of five contemporary artists who have staged and photographed scenes worthy of a fairy tale. The images are both surreal and believable.

an interactive culinary lab, and a restored wetlands area. At the Audubon Zoo, take in the recently opened African lion habitat to learn about the importance of conservation. Visitors can also head to Mardi Gras World to get up close with parade floats and over-the-top costumes. Soon, preparations will begin for the holidays. Streetcars and steamboats will be decked out for the occasion as carolers descend on Jackson Square. If you find yourself in the city on Christmas Eve, join the locals in carrying on a tradition started by the Louisiana region’s earliest Cajun settlers. Along the Mississippi River’s levees, townspeople erect bonfires to light the way for Papa Noel and his reindeer. The typical design resembles a pyramid-shaped cone, but creative one-off configurations mimic everything from Cajun-style cabins to pickup trucks. Some neighborhoods even serve steaming bowls of gumbo and end the celebration with a fireworks show. Equally impressive is New Orleans’ knack for reinventing itself. This year alone ushered in a billion-dollar airport expansion and a 6-acre addition to
the outdoor oasis that is the New Orleans Museum of Art’s free outdoor sculpture garden. This fall, the city will also see the opening of The Sazerac House, an immersive cocktail experience dedicated to exploring New Orleans’ spirited culture, both past and present. Families won’t want to miss the Louisiana Children’s Museum, which has a new home at City Park. Highlights include a floating classroom,

it’s been a good year for chef Nathan Richard. In June, he was crowned “King of Louisiana Seafood” at the annual Louisiana Seafood Cook-Off. Then, in August, the executive chef of New Orleans restaurant DTB, short for Down the Bayou, won the Great American Seafood Cook-Off. Focused on coastal Cajun cuisine, the menu at DTB is informed by

Richard’s youth spent hunting and fishing on the bayous and marshes of south Louisiana. Here, he shares what went into his winning dish and why he thinks Louisiana seafood is, well, king. Q: Did you have a favorite seafood dish growing up? A: Oh, yes! My daddy does an
opened-face redfish on the half-shell. It’s usually stuffed with fresh crab meat, shrimp, and oysters. It’s so refreshing.
Q: You won both cook-offs with a crawfish and goat cheese king cake. What inspired that dish? A: Two things come to mind.
First, I was born on Kings’ Day and am constantly reminded when it’s king cake season. Second, John Ed Laborde of Panaroma Foods in Marksville, Louisiana, inspired me with one of the most delicious foods at Jazz Fest: his crawfish bread.
Q: Can we get a taste of the cake? A: Starting on Jan. 6, it will be
on the menu at DTB for Mardi Gras. However, you don’t have to wait that long, because the cakes are now available year-round, and they can be shipped anywhere in the country if you order online at CajunGrocer.com.
Q: What is it that sets Louisiana seafood apart? A: No other state considers
alligator a seafood. That alone is unique. But we have so much more here—you can go frogging at night and fishing the next morning, and you might even be able to catch an ice chest of shrimp at the same time. There is nothing like it.

During the two-hour, 15-mile roundtrip journey, you can tour the steam engine room, enjoy the musical stylings of a live jazz trio, and learn about the history of the river from an onboard guide. These special cruises tend to fill up early, so be sure to buy tickets in advance. The New Year’s Eve Gala cruise is particularly memorable as guests are given a front-row seat to the fireworks spectacle over the river. This fall, Steamboat Natchez also plans to add a sister vessel. The recently renovated Riverboat City of New Orleans will be powered by a paddlewheel and offer daily brunch and dinner cruises.

THE BEIGNETS SERVED at Cafe Beignet’s four locations are traditional, which is to say they come with no filling and a heavy helping of powdered sugar. Even better? They’re served with live music. In 1990, a group of friends

Park, where you’ll find life-size bronze sculptures of famed New Orleans musicians, including Fats Domino and Pete Fountain. The cafe’s courtyard hosts live music daily. For people-watching, head to Decatur Street. This location boasts great street views, a beautifully restored 48-foot bar, and an old player piano. The newest addition on St. Peter Street pays homage to the building’s former tenant: the Old Coffee Pot. For more than 100 years, the French Quarter establishment sold a pastry similar to a beignet, only crunchier because of its use of rice flour. When the Old Coffee Pot closed and Cafe Beignet took over, the popular menu item stayed on. Whether you crave history, live music, or a sugary treat, you’ll find all

of cooking classes has become Destination Kitchen, a go-to guide for food-focused tours dreamed up by local chef Julie Cavignac. Leave Bourbon Street behind for tours on Freret Street and St. Charles Avenue. On these tours, you’ll sip cocktails alongside the mixologists who made them, dine on pecancrusted catfish at a waterfront restaurant by Lake Pontchartrain, and more. And while culinary tours are the company’s bread and butter, the history tours are not to be missed. Destination Kitchen’s two-hour historic walking tour of the French Quarter showcases the area’s hidden gems, Spanish- and French-inspired architecture, and popular outdoor markets. Brennan took over the family business more than 20 years ago. While many traditions remain intact—like 25-cent martinis at lunch and a jazz brunch—they’re focused on the restaurant’s evolution. The menu changes constantly. In the spring, regulars look forward to a shortcake made exclusively with strawberries picked from the nearby town of Ponchatoula. In the fall, there’s usually some version of a quail dish, often stuffed with cornbread and tasso, doused in a molasses-bacon glaze, or given some other delicious treatment. Christina Aguilera, It’s such an exciting time to be in Vegas. There’s great history there, and I’ve been able to make the venue space my own creatively. I wanted a Disney-esque sensibility where you’re really taken on a ride. We are giving people an experience for all five senses. It’s not just visual or audio. There’s confetti and scented bubbles. During the song “Candyman,” lollipops are given out. I also brought in Pinar Toprak, the woman who wrote the score for Captain Marvel, to create an entire score for the opening, so it doesn’t just go right into my concert. I recorded myself singing opera over the score. It’s a really fun start. Then there’s songs like “Fighter” and “Beautiful”—the crowd favorites that truly help me connect with fans who’ve been so loyal. Those are special moments.
