“Take things one day at a time, and don’t forget to enjoy the little victories.” —ADAM DOLEAC, MUSICIAN

From there he moved to Nashville, Tennessee, to pursue his passion for country music. GETTING THE BLUES

The Music City Star-Maker

Discover the accidental landmark that changed music history. Tucked inside an unassuming strip mall about 8 miles from the hustle and bustle of Nashville’s Broadway, The Bluebird Cafe has been the catalyst for the careers of some of music’s biggest stars. Since opening its doors in 1982, the tiny venue has been a place where up-and-coming songwriters and artists rise to fame and build their careers. From newcomers to stars, all levels of songwriters are welcomed and supported. Artists like Kathy Mattea, Trisha Yearwood, Keith Urban, Faith Hill, and numerous others have had career-defining moments in the intimate, 90-seat listening room, where chart-topping songs are heard alongside soon-to-be hits. Since 2015, Southwest® has been the official airline of The Bluebird Cafe as a way to support artists,

songwriters, and fans, further connecting our Hospitality to the world-famous music community of Nashville. Through The Bluebird Cafe, we celebrate songwriters—the heroes behind the hits. The custom Southwest-branded Taylor Guitar that hangs on the wall serves as a reminder to visitors and songwriters alike that the airline’s relationship with music and music-makers is one of mutual love. To learn more about our partnership with The Bluebird Cafe, visit Southwest.fm. Southwest customers can also enjoy Bluebird, a new feature-length documentary that tells the story of this legendary venue, by tuning in via the Inflight Entertainment Portal on their WiFi-equipped flight. The film, which features performances by Taylor Swift, Garth Brooks, Maren Morris, Vince Gill, Jason Isbell, and many more, explores the past and present of this accidental landmark that has altered the course of music history. —Alyssa Foster, Brand Partnerships and Entertainment PR

TECHNOLOGY HAS MADE DATING MORE COMPLICATED & IMPERSONAL. HIRING A MATCHMAKER MIGHT BE THE ANSWER...

BREAKING UP WITH ONLINE DATING

A

t first, Larry Chiarelli, director at a tech start up, thought he was doing all he needed. Sign up on multiple dating websites. Meet lots of women. Eventually, the right one would come along – except she never did. So he decided to bring in the professionals and hired It’s Just Lunch. It’s Just Lunch’s matchmakers got to know him and his preferences. They selected his dates, arranged schedules, and even made the restaurant reservations. Dating became stress-free and fun. Larry was a practical guy and didn’t believe in love-at-first-sight… until IJL introduced him to Ping.

¤ ¤

Dating life before joining It’s Just Lunch? Lawrence: Chaotic! I was meeting a lot of women but not the right women for me. Online dating was time-consuming and stressful. I needed someone to relieve me of the dating busy work so I could get some breathing room. I needed to slow things down to speed them up. It’s Just Lunch fit that criteria perfectly.

8 0 0.858.6 526

it's just lunch breaking up.indd 1

Why join It’s Just Lunch? Ping: I fly frequently for both work and fun. When I saw It’s Just Lunch in the airline magazine, it was as if the matchmaker was talking to me! One day after a particularly long flight and wanting to snuggle with someone and watch a movie, I decided it couldn’t hurt to give it a try.

Most enjoyable part of the It’s Just Lunch process?

I’d call back, get the details and run through my availability. The next thing I knew I was in front of an interesting woman having a great conversation.

L: I tell my clients an analogy all the time: Would you rather drive across the country in a Toyota Corolla or a BMW 5 series? They always say the 5 series. You get what you pay for. Investing in yourself and your future with someone special means investing in the right matchmaking service. For me that was It’s Just Lunch.

L: Easy and convenient. The company I was working for was going through a merger so I was away from home quite a bit. I’d finish my day and there would be a message from my matchmaker telling me about my next match.

The success of It’s Just Lunch is built on creating high-quality matches in low-pressure situations. In 28 years, they’ve set up millions of first dates. Make meeting someone special a priority. Get in touch at 800-858-6526 or www.itsjustlunch.com.

Celebrating Female Voices

Southwest® supports the 2020 International Women’s Day Forum. Almost 100 years ago, women gained the right to vote and more than 50 years later, the United Nations began celebrating International Women’s Day. This year, Southwest is proud to work with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation on events such as its International Women’s Day Forum. Southwest has always championed women. In 2019, we were named a Best Employer for Women by Forbes, and this year, we hope to continue being a strong supporter through events like the 2020 International Women’s Day Forum. With a theme of “Marking a Milestone, Continuing the Momentum,” the event explores the changemakers, doers, leaders, and visionaries who are paving the way for a better future for all. Southwest supports and participates in this forum, where hundreds of business and government leaders examine ways the private

sector is driving women’s empowerment around the globe. The event, which is held in New York, explores business strategies for increasing gender diversity and enabling women to achieve their full economic potential. “Companies have the power to be changemakers when it comes to building stronger communities,” said Marc DeCourcey, the senior vice president of the U.S. Chamber Foundation. “When women are empowered to work and lead productive lives, families prosper, businesses grow, and communities thrive.” Through this partnership, Southwest Airlines® celebrates 2020 as a very important year for promoting women’s economic empowerment and gender inclusion for the achievement of global equality and peace. —Christine Ortega, International Senior Advisor

I was flying home to Los Angeles from New Orleans. While checking my bag, I discovered I had overpacked by about 7 pounds, so I asked Customer Service Agent Isabel H. if I could take out some items to remove weight. I opened my bag and took out three large containers of CoolBrew—a coffee hard to find near me—and offered them to Isabel and her Coworkers. They looked in my bag, saw the 10 other CoolBrew containers I had packed (the stuff is amazing), and questioned why on earth I was traveling with so much. I explained that I now live in L.A., where many of the comforts of home aren’t available, so I stock up when I can. Hearing this, Isabel jumped into action, bringing me a cardboard box and packing tape. She packed up all 21.5 pounds of coffee, checked it for me as my free second bag, and never made me feel like an inconvenience. Isabel’s Hospitality is exactly what makes Southwest so wonderful. —Nicole C., Senior Instructor

SELFLESS SERVICE

My father was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer in March of last year, and we took a trip to Orlando to spend time together and relax away from the craziness of chemotherapy and doctors’ appointments. We boarded our flight and were immediately greeted by Flight Attendant Roger W., or RJ. My father and I were using sign language (my father is deaf), and as we were taking our seats, RJ came over and greeted my father by signing, “Hello! My name is RJ.” My father’s face lit up, and they had a quick conversation without needing me to interpret. Throughout the flight, RJ was very attentive to my father, conversing with him and even joking a little with the sign language that he knew—all without knowing of my father’s terminal illness. RJ truly made the beginning of our trip so special. I just can’t thank RJ enough for jumping on the opportunity to make him feel at ease. —Southwest Customer Roberta L.

There was a gentleman traveling alone from Los Angeles to Chicago. He had autism and was having trouble communicating with us. Because of the amount of time it took to get him safely through security, we knew he would need some extra assistance on the plane. Luckily, Ramp Agent Walterio D. was traveling home on that flight. I approached Walterio and asked if he would mind looking out for the Passenger just in case the Flight Attendant needed extra help. He agreed! I was so relieved that he was able to help us out, and he was so happy to do it. That Passenger’s flight and situation would not have been the same without Walterio’s willingness to help out. He was traveling on his own time, but he stepped up and showed his Hospitality to that Passenger. Walterio, thank you! Your kindness and willingness to step up is such a perfect example of Southwest LUV. —Emily R., Customer Service Manager

Dear Editor,

I came across Lyndsay Knecht’s article [“Turning Point,” January 2020] on a recent flight. I am currently a TV/ film major and theater arts minor, but for as long as I can remember, I have loved the art of dance and theater. Due to a lack of confidence, I became an observer. I danced in high school, but I believed in order to make anything from it, it was an art you had to be working on since childhood. Her article enlightened me, and I want to take the time to thank her. This was the message I needed.

Just saw the article about Emily Darchuk and have to get a bottle to support her! So cool. Thanks for this great article! Love that [she’s] converting waste to produce this spirit! @KMBOWSUNDY

Dating life pre-It’s Just Lunch?

¤

Erik: I mainly met women through friends and work associates. It was always awkward and hit or miss. Danielle: I had been divorced for a few years and was trying to figure out how to get back into the dating world. The online thing was not what I wanted to do, and not the caliber of men I was look looking for. A friend of mine met her husband through It’s Just Lunch so I decided to give it a try.

Challenges of re-entering the dating scene? E: The rules had changed. It’s a part-time job and too much work to meet someone online. I wanted to meet someone face-to-face right off the bat. My time is valuable and I didn’t want to waste it getting to know someone in the virtual world only to realize “this isn’t going to work out”. D: I was out of the singles scene for a couple years. I liked It’s Just Lunch because it was a commitment to “I’m going to take that step and venture out.”

Benefits of working with a matchmaker? D: As you get older, it’s harder to meet people. I was surrounded by married people. The matchmakers introduce you to people you wouldn’t normally meet in your day-to-day life. That’s what I absolutely loved about it. I also love their feedback process after every date. You feel like you’re

HIRING A MATCHMAKER MIGHT BE THE ANSWER... ou’re successful, single and attractive, so why is it so hard to meet someone special? You’re not alone. Many singles share your frustration. But there are options. We sat down with Erik Laver and Danielle Merritt-Laver to find out why they turned their dating lives over to the matchmakers at It’s Just Lunch (IJL).

Particular challenges of being an entrepreneur and dating? E: Being a business owner, my schedule is always full. My of office manager turned me onto It’s Just Lunch. She sat down in my office and said, “You have to start dating and meeting some new people. It’s Just Lunch is the dating service that I wish I had gone through.” So I called and signed on as a member. My matchmaker made it so easy for me to meet new women. She set everything up. The restaurant. My date. I just had to show up. Simple. I had a fabulous experience. And met Danielle, my wife! pressure on yourself. The only question you should be asking yourself on a first date is: “Do I want to see this person again?” instead of the stressinducing “Could I see myself married to him/her?” CHEMISTRY Determining if there is chemistry on a first date is extremely important according to the singles we talked to. That’s why we set singles up on face-to-face dates. You can only feel chemistry when you are physically with someone. It’s Just Lunch Matchmakers:

pounds of ice cream a year.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY LESLIE GROW/OFFSET.COM

Here’s something worth screaming about. According to the International Dairy Foods Association, we enjoy nearly two dozen pounds of ice cream annually. Considering the fantastic flavors ice cream makers are now churning out—from goat cheese to sweet potato—our continued appetite for the cold confection isn’t surprising. But even with the outthere options available, vanilla remains our go-to flavor, with chocolate and cookies ’n’ cream rounding out the top three. And that’s the scoop.

FOUNDING FATHER Although he didn’t invent the delicious dessert, Thomas Jefferson is the first known American to write down a vanilla ice cream recipe.

Pinky Swear Most children know the power of using your little finger to make a solemn vow. Chances are even some adults are still locking pinkies to seal deals with friends. We won’t judge. What we will do, however, is point you in the direction of a delicious drink. Head to Eclipse Restaurant at the Moonrise Hotel in St. Louis.

Here, food and beverage manager Austin Noland is shaking up playful sips like the Pinky Swear, a sweet riff on the Trinidad Sour, which blends bitters, lime juice, orgeat, and blackberry liqueur. The smooth cocktail will likely have you longing for a second round. Go ahead: We won’t tell. Pinky promise.

MAKE IT ↗ In a cocktail shaker, add 1 ounce Deep Eddy Vodka, ½ ounce Angostura bitters, ½ ounce fresh lime juice, ½ ounce Giffard orgeat syrup, and ½ ounce crème de mûre blackberry liqueur. Shake, and then double strain into a coupe glass. Garnish with three blackberries. Jetsons-inspired décor and spacethemed art give Eclipse Restaurant a cosmic feel.

of us say natural light is our most coveted workplace perk.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY ADAM VOORHES/GALLERY STOCK

In a world where it’s becoming more commonplace for offices to have craft beer tastings, pingpong tables, and kombucha on tap, it’s still the little things that end up being employees’ favorites. According to a survey by workplace developer Hana, most office workers simply want more natural light. And no, we’re not talking about the inexpensive beer found in frat houses around the country. Some fresh sunlight through a window sure beats the soft glow of a fluorescent lightbulb, and people seem to value that above margarita Mondays and beanbag chairs. We wouldn’t turn down complimentary snacks, though.

NOT SO PERK Y Sixty percent of the employees surveyed said “fun” work extras are just making it harder for them to do their jobs.

WORK Takeaway

O’Brady recounts his 54-day journey in The Impossible First, in bookstores now.

OUT TAKES DREAM BIG, START SMALL My wife, Jen, and I call it “whiteboard into reality.” We dream as big as we possibly can, with no exact game plan of how we’re getting there. We put that on a whiteboard. Writing it down makes it real and makes us accountable. Take incremental steps to make it a reality. AFFIRM YOURSELF Everyone has selfdoubt. I’ve certainly been there. But you can choose what thoughts are going on inside your brain. The response to telling yourself something positively affirming is so much better than allowing those doubts to permeate. We are the stories we tell ourselves.

Trekking 932 miles across Antarctica, alone, the record-setting endurance athlete recalled his dad’s simple advice: Have fun. Have joy in the process. Of course, in Antarctica, in the middle of nowhere, by myself, pulling a 375-pound sled when it’s minus-30 and the wind’s blowing in my face, sometimes it was hard to laugh and play and smile. I intentionally spent most of the journey in complete silence, but I played Paul Simon’s Graceland from time to time. I’d crank up the volume on Graceland—I’m having a bad day, I’m in the middle of nowhere, my body’s exhausted, I’m freezing, it’s really starting to take an emotional toll. But I’d wind up dancing. It was a one-man dance party in the middle of nowhere. I found the joy and fun in that. Then there was this kind of intense, beautiful, euphoric flow state I experienced in the final push. I only got there because of the challenge. Going through the hard things took me to that transcendent moment.

PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF COLIN O’BRADY

PAY IT FORWARD By sharing my story, my hope is to create this ripple effect of positivity in the world. I encourage anyone to share their story, whether their platform is reaching millions of people or just people in their community.

Old Habits Die Hard

Alone for the first time in my life, I learned to let go of the past and to face my fears—starting with the wasp in my kitchen. / BY CATHERINE DOWNES

T

he wasp was huge. I hadn’t noticed him enter my home, but there he was, hovering above my kitchen counter like a UFO. A shadow, which slid across a glistening mound of freshly diced Roma tomatoes, tipped me off to his presence. A sharp buzzzzzz solidified it. I flung my head back and observed as he levitated up, and up, and up, before crawling into an overhead recessed light fixture. His abdomen, thick and covered in black-and-yellow stripes, twitched. His gangly legs stretched in front of his head. His wings dropped behind his body like a tiny backpack. I froze, tomato knife in hand, and stared at him. He stared back. We watched each other watching each other with the kind of intensity that could perforate steel. I had no idea what was running through his bug brain. How could I? But his vibe, if wasps have vibes, was chill. An earlier version of myself

would have booked it toward the nearest exit, then down the street in pursuit of a defender. But not today. I didn’t flinch. It took me 33 years to get to this place. That’s three decades plus the amount of time that Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake dated. It’s a long time to take to get somewhere. Even if that location isn’t a physical destination but a mindset. In this case, it was a place where I was able to fearlessly exist in the same room as a wasp. Now, before you start shouting things like Small fry! and Wimp! from the comfort of your peanut gallery, hear me out. Until this moment, I’d been guarded from clicking cicadas searching for a windowpane to in-

And shielded from leathery millipedes who slithered under doorways in the dead of night, unaware that they were not, in fact, invited to the party. I had parents, and then roommates, and then later, a husband to thank for this. But we grow up. And by “we,” I mean “I,” but also maybe “you.” And we leave home. And our friends move in with us. And then we grow up some more. And we fall in love. And our friends move out. And our significant other moves in. And then sometimes we fall out of

love. Or maybe we realize that we were never truly in love to begin with. And we move out. And then, for the first time, we’re living on our own. That was me at 30. An inexperienced, squirmy army of one who hadn’t so much as slayed a beast more menacing than a housefly. OK, it’s not like I didn’t know how to kill bugs. In theory, it’s simple. You step on them. Or spray them with poison. Everybody knows this. But the act seemed daunting. Impossible, even. I was faced, for the first time, with this seemingly hopeless task a mere 48 hours after moving into my new single-person pad. I stood in my living room with a failed marriage under my belt. A mountain of unopened cardboard boxes by my side. And a big. red. wasp! trapped between my balcony screen and sliding glass door. I was also surrounded by friends who were equally inept in this field. How pathetic. Four grown adults with moderately quick reflexes who had undergone far worse than a run-in with a bug with a stinger attached to its rear. Yet, there we were, powerless. I’ll spare you the details, but just know that after some frantic knocking on neighbors’ doors, a tsunami’s worth of Windex, some drenched wings, and one of those electric bug zappers that resembles a tennis racket, the insect was sent to its grave. Sayonara, sucker! Arrivederci, dude! R.I.P., my guy! We popped two, maybe three, bottles of reasonably priced champagne. We sipped from acrylic margarita glasses that I’d picked up from a resale shop since all of my coupes and snifters and chipped vintage mugs were buried in a box somewhere. We drank to the fallen insect and his (hopefully) fulfilling insect life. We toasted to singleness. Not the sad kind, but the kind filled with boundless freedom and opportunities. We raised a glass to my new bedroom with

F2_wasp_CS.indd 53

floor-to-ceiling mirrors. And we knocked brims to bravery. Once the bottles were empty, and the sun had set behind the massive catalpa tree on my street, my friends went home. Here, in the quiet of my kitchen, as I rinsed the sticky from my fingers and lapped water from the faucet like a Saint Bernard, I was confronted with the fact that there were so many things that I didn’t know how to do. I didn’t feel brave.

I felt disheartened and, frankly, a little dumb. Now, I’m not talking about things like contorting your limbs during Ashtanga yoga or mastering falconry. I’m talking about the tasks you may automatically hand off to someone else. It’s part of the balance. The yin and yang. The “I’ll make the cheesy cornbread from scratch because you can’t follow a recipe to save your life” to the “You make the chili because every time I

dice an onion my eyeballs turn into Niagara Falls.” My gut instinct was to send a distress signal and attract a savior who could fulfill these shortcomings. But I didn’t. I stood in my kitchen, wiped the water from my chin, and made a list. I would face this head-on. Things I would learn how to do: Kill bugs. Make an over-easy egg without breaking the yolk. Drive

I would train. I would become the bug-slaying equivalent to Bruce Willis in Die Hard. my car through the car wash at the gas station. Sew on a button. File my taxes. Squashing bugs landed at the top of my list because, for starters, it wasn’t tax season. But also, this skill seemed imperative to my mental and physical well-being in the way a perfectly runny yolk wasn’t. (Plus, scrambled eggs are subjectively just as good.) Insects can harm you. They can bite and pinch and sting you. Some can even burrow in your ears. And I was not about to offer up an auditory canal to a family of creepy-crawlies. I would train. I would become the bug-slaying equivalent to Bruce Willis in Die Hard. No, Bruce Willis in The Fifth Element. No! The Last Boy Scout. Oh, heck, Bruce Willis in basically any one of his movies except Look Who’s Talking because he plays a baby in that movie and the only

F2_wasp_CS.indd 54

thing babies are capable of slaying are their parents’ sleep cycles. And diapers. Just as predicted, intruders came. One by one, they infiltrated my fortress. They slinked and scurried and fluttered. Sometimes they invited their buddies along. There was a cockroach the size of a small child’s foot, a few hairy spiders, a beetle (who was actually very cute, so I scooped her up and placed her outside). There were moths and mosquitoes. Fortunately, no bees. And really, anybody who kills a bee should be sent to a high security prison. (Don’t squash bees. We need them. They help plants grow.) I was getting stronger. Braver. More efficient. And by the time the black-and-yellow wasp appeared in my kitchen, I had a laundry list of bug encounters in my back pocket and a new sense of self-confidence to show for it. The insect didn’t rattle me the way it would have a few years prior. I remained collected, considered my options, and took action. While the bug’s fate was a dismal one, and I was momentarily struck by a pang of guilt, I believed, sincerely, that I’d made the right decision. And in this moment, I felt grateful. Grateful for everything that had brought me here. I’d not only conquered my fear but also realized that I was capable of more than I’d ever imagined. Now, instead of listing my inadequacies, if I’m faced with something daunting, I inhale super deep, exhale with the force of leaf blower, and try. Eventually, the trying will lead to doing, and before you know it, you’re sliding a perfectly cooked over-easy egg onto a crispy slice of toast. (I haven’t mastered this yet. But I have faith that one day I will.) Catherine Downes is an editor at this magazine. the barn-turned-studio space at Amanda Shires’ home outside Nashville, Tennessee, feels like creativity come to life. Gig posters dot the walls, colorful rugs line the floor, and the candle count clears double digits. The room is filled with instruments, including a guitar once owned by Leonard Cohen (bought by Shires, a self-described “disciple”) and an antique piano she admits could use tuning. There’s the stage, of course, backdropped by faux stained glass windows that were tour props for

her husband, the musician Jason Isbell. The disco balls on the ceiling come with a dozen different light settings—“We’re halfway there, don’t worry,” she says, flipping through them all—and tiny black boxes are stuffed with notecards covered in lines and lyrics. There’s a makeshift painting studio, with easels set up next to windows that overlook the porch and the house Shires, 37, shares with Isbell and their 4-year-old daughter, Mercy. Somewhere, there’s an almost completed book of poetry that

she’s been working on for the past two or so years. (She’s not putting pressure on herself to finish it, though. “I’m not like that person saying, ‘I’ve got a book that I’m releasing.’”) The space is moody and atmospheric, the sort of place you picture inspiration striking. And throughout Shires’ decades-long career, inspiration hasn’t typically been in short supply. Since getting her start in the music industry as a 15-year-old playing fiddle with the Texas Playboys and then with Billy Joe Shaver, she’s

recorded and toured with the Grammy Award– winning Isbell and his band, the 400 Unit, played alongside the legendary John Prine, and released five solo albums. In 2018, the native Texan released To the Sunset, which earned a nod for Best Album at the Americana Music Honors & Awards (she lost to Prine’s The Tree of Forgiveness Forgiveness) and marked a departure in sound from her earlier work. Shires had written her previous album, My Piece of Land, while pregnant with her daughter. A reflection on home, the collection of songs has a quieter feeling, with a more stripped-down sound. To the Sunset is moodier and more ethereal. “Sonically, I wanted the atmosphere to be variations on sunset sounds—there’s a lot of wind sounds and effects done to the violins and guitars that make it more rock ’n’ roll,” she says, West Texas still ringing in her voice as she sits in the studio’s tiny kitchen on a stool borrowed from the painting area. Rolling Stone compared the result to “Radiohead and Kate Bush jamming with the Band inside a space shuttle.” In 2019, Shires launched a new project alongside Brandi Carlile, Natalie Hemby, and Maren Morris that turned Nashville and the music industry on its head. An all-female riff on The Highwaymen—the supergroup of Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and Kris Kristofferson—

Sonically, I wanted the atmosphere to be variations on sunset sounds. The Highwomen blasted country stereotypes and punched back at what’s long been a male-dominated industry. The band released their self-titled album last September, watching as it debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart and No. 10 on the Billboard 200. The 12-song record, which includes a gender-flipped version of Jimmy Webb’s “Highwayman,” centered women and their stories. As Carlile later put it, The Highwomen aren’t an album or a band. They’re a movement. Shires still remembers the moment that set the movement into motion. Back in 2016, while touring in a van for My Piece of Land, a broken aux cord led her to listen to top 40 country. She wrote down the name and artist of each song she march 2020 southwest 59

heard—a list she still has—and of the 22 she jotted down, only two were women. It was both a sobering and aggravating exercise. Shires thought of her daughter, Mercy, not quite a year old at that point, and wondered what would happen if she grew up and gravitated toward what was played on the radio. It stuck with Shires. “Days more go by, and I was thinking of what I could do to make it different in case she does go that route,” she says. “I thought to myself, Self, I’m going to make a band and we’re going to be called The Highwomen.” Shires called her producer, Dave Cobb, whose client list reads like a who’s who in country music—Chris Stapleton, Sturgill Simpson, Zac Brown Band—and explained her plan. She wanted to start an all-female group that would sing about more than what women were “allowed to sing about.” No unrequited love songs, no needy songs, no sassy songs. “I was thinking more about Maybelle Carter and singing songs that tell a story, that you could learn something from,” she says. Cobb suggested she reach out to Carlile, whose Grammy Award–winning album By the Way, I Forgive You he’d produced. Shires was reluctant at first—“I wasn’t going to cold-call Brandi Carlile”—but ”—but after Cobb orchestrated a meeting before Carlile’s set at Nashville’s The Basement East, the pieces began to fall into place. Grammy Award– winner Morris and veteran songwriter Hemby, who’s penned hits for artists from Blake Shelton to Kacey Musgraves, rounded out the roster. And on April 1, 2019, The Highwomen made their live debut at a fitting place: Loretta Lynn’s 87th birthday concert at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena. It’s not that Shires was or wasn’t expecting The Highwomen to be successful. She’s the first to admit that you can never know the trajectory of any project. But she thinks the group couldn’t have happened at any other time, that maybe the reason recording together felt so natural is because the band was meant to be. “It takes a lot of frustration and strength to stand up for yourself and stand up for others,” she says, her hands waving as she describes the circumstances that sparked the band. For Shires, The Highwomen’s warm reception was a sign, validation of her desire to change the industry and shatter stereotypes. “What it does say to me is that we’re not the only ones that feel like we have voices that need to be heard.” That conviction will stay with her on her latest solo tour, Atmosphereless, which kicked off in early February. As she tries, carefully, to encompass what the tour name means, she pulls out her phone, where she’s typed out impressions—“I have a lot of feelings scrambling around”—as they’ve come to her. “It’s a lot to do with the opposite of

fear, and the opposite of fear is curiosity, really,” she says. “It’s about exploring yourself and facing your fears and not being afraid to fall down.” If To the Sunset was about acknowledging your past and moving forward, then Atmosphereless is about moving up, moving beyond. A self-described curious person, Shires carries that attitude into her life outside of music. In 2017, she completed her MFA in creative writing, with a focus in poetry, and she recently started painting at her mother’s suggestion. “The more you show up for yourself, the more growth you have,” she says. It’s an idea that’s echoed in The Highwomen, which Shires describes as being “about lifting each other and being there for one another.” To further that mission, members of the group have discussed the idea of settling in to play several nights at select venues. That would allow more Highwomen to step in—artists who weren’t able to join the group the first time around. Residencies would also let Shires and others offer songwriting classes for kids or work with organizations like She Is The Music, which aims to empower female creators. later this month, she’ll take the stage at Luck Reunion, the music festival hosted by Willie Nelson at his ranch outside of Austin. She’ll play both a solo set and with John Prine, who’s become a friend and mentor. “He is one of those people who is the same person onstage as he is offstage, and I identify with that a lot,” Shires says. “Because, you know, a lot of people put on a mask for the work that they do. If he has one, I’ve never seen it.” Her taste for collaboration extends outside of country music—she names Radiohead’s Thom Yorke as an artist she’d like to work with. And she hopes to one day get top billing at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Colorado’s iconic open-air live music temple. (She played there with Isbell and David Crosby in September.) She wants to have another tour bus so she can travel with her daughter on her solo tours. “But like I always tell her and Jason, the actual place where our beds and our cars and our things are, that’s not my house,” Shires says. “My home is wherever Jason and Mercy are.” But, most simply, she wants to do what she’s always done: create, whether through her voice, pen, or paintbrush. And when she plays her newest song, “Deciphering Dreams,” in her studio, it’s clear inspiration is still in strong supply. “I just want to keep making things,” Shires says. “I feel like playing music and being on stage is where I’m supposed to be.” Melissa Flandreau is an editor at this magazine. Artists We’ll Have on Repeat All Year

1

Tank and Tank the Bangas

In a year when genre seems deader than ever, it’s fitting that a band this uncategorizable was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best New Artist. The group borrows from soul, funk, hip-hop, spoken word poetry, rock, and Disney musicals to build a multilayered sound too big and joyful to fit in any tidy

boxes. Only problem is these best “new” artists have been lighting up stages, from their hometown of New Orleans to the offices of NPR (do yourself a favor and look up their 2017 Tiny Desk performance), since way back in 2011. Many great musicians are ahead of their time. Fortunately for the world, the times are catching up to Tank and the Bangas. Listen: “Ants,” off the 2019 album Green Balloon

Expansive and well-stocked, Josey Records has multiple listening stations to test out whatever record catches your eye.

Launching this spring, KWJC is a campus radio station for William Jewell College that’s dedicated to playing classical music full time.

Brittany Howard

With her band Alabama Shakes, Howard made music so rich, emotional, and warm you could practically feel it wrap you in a hug as it came out of the speakers. Last year’s solo debut, Jaime, was both more personal and more expansive, its psychedelic soul and searching lyrics proving her ambitions go far beyond Southern comfort. Listen: “Stay High,” off the 2019 album Jaime

Natalia Lafourcade

The 2010s were the decade American listeners fell for Latin music, a love affair that seems likely to continue in the 2020s. Lafourcade’s vivid Spanish-language pop is more traditional than the reggaeton-inflected hits that have dominated U.S. charts, but in mining the folk history of Latin music, the Mexican singer shows us how the classics never go out of style—they only get reinvented. Listen: “Nunca Es Suficiente,” off the 2015 album Hasta la Raíz

Local staple Sonic Boom Records has an impressive selection of records and hosts in-store performances from up-andcoming bands.

Katie Pruitt

The Georgia native was probably always destined to move to Nashville, where her frank and evocative storytelling, yearning voice, and expressive guitar playing place her in a lineage of artists who made it big in Music City. If you haven’t heard much of Pruitt yet, 2020 is likely to be the year that changes. Pruitt’s highly anticipated, unflinching debut album, Expectations, dropped on Feb. 21, and she’ll follow up her spring solo tour by supporting City and Colour at 10 shows around the country. Listen: “Loving Her,” off this year’s Expectations

Alternative and indie rock radio station KEXP’s award-winning website contains a treasure trove of in-studio live performances, playlists, and podcasts.

A1 Records, though small, is a cozy and well-organized spot in the East Village, perfect for audiophiles looking for vintage vinyl.

Icon Music Center

It’s never too early to start planning where you’ll see your next show, and this new Cincinnati venue should top your list. Set to open in the fall, the Andrew J. Brady Icon Music Center will feature an indoor and outdoor stage and is named for a beloved local teacher, the late Brady, who worked at the elementary and high school level for decades.

12

Jazz TX

San Antonio might not be the first place that comes to mind when thinking of jazz hotbeds, but this intimate venue in the city’s Pearl district has an unbeatable atmosphere. Along with its eponymous tunes, Jazz TX’s calendar also regularly features swing and salsa music.

14 13

▲ High Water Festival

In 2017, folk duo Shovels & Rope launched a music festival in North Charleston, South Carolina, as “a celebration of music, food, and libations.” Husband-and-wife team Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst curate the offerings and are among the headliners. At this year’s fest, held April 18–19, attendees can also jam to artists like Wilco and Mavis Staples.

14

Merriweather Post Pavilion

Nestled in Symphony Woods in Columbia, Maryland, this Frank Gehry–designed amphitheater is all about beauty: a stunning surrounding landscape of trees paired with equally impressive acoustics. Oh, did we mention the backstage pool for performing artists?

MUSIC PODCASTS TO PRESS PLAY ON 15. Musicians from Metallica to Meek Mill break down their songs in the popular podcast Song Exploder. / 16. This soulful country debut paired stories of loss and healing with steel guitars and jangly hooks.

The group behind some of hip-hop’s most undeniable hits is expected to return. All good things (like, as of press time, a release date) come to those who wait.

The long-anticipated follow-up to 2015’s Currents is steeped in funk and melodic psychedelia, which should prove irresistible to both indie snobs and pop music fanatics.

barbecue is synonymous with Tennessee, and some of the best in the entire state can be found in Nashville. Family-owned and -operated in The Gulch neighborhood, Peg Leg Porker prides itself on the homemade recipes that have been developed by owner and pit master Carey Bringle throughout his 30-year career. One look at Peg Leg Porker’s menu and your eyes—and stomach—will immediately be drawn to the dry-rubbed ribs, which are served in half and full racks and rank as the restaurant’s No. 1 entree. Before the ribs arrive, be sure to start off with the Memphis Sushi, a sausage and cheese platter. Afterward, finish with a peach, apple, or chocolate pie. To help guests wash down their barbecue, Bringle developed his own Peg Leg Porker Straight Tennessee Bourbon, available both in the restaurant and in bottles to purchase and enjoy at home. Speaking of enjoying at home, if you’re craving those dry-rubbed ribs once you’ve left Tennessee, there’s no need to fret: The ribs are available for delivery right to your kitchen. Not one to rest on his laurels, Bringle is planning to open a new restaurant featuring a Texas-style and familyfriendly menu in Nashville’s The Nations neighborhood this fall.

The recipe of America’s first combination candy bar (with more than one principal ingredient like caramel, chocolate, or taffy) hasn’t changed in all that time. Today, it still combines caramel, marshmallow nougat, fresh roasted peanuts, and milk chocolate into a sweet treat that’ll have you hooked in one bite. In downtown Nashville, the

If you’re a DIYer, sign up for one of the chocolate experiences, which are offered most Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, and get behind the bar to make your own clusters. are filled with stories about security and data breaches at big box retailers and online websites, resulting in financial and personal information being leaked. Considering our reliance on technology today, it’s more important than ever to keep yourself and your business safe when it comes to your cyber and online presence. “With data breaches, businesses need to know when passwords were exposed so they can take a proactive approach to changing them and never using them again,” says Charles Henson, managing partner with Nashville Computer. That’s where Password Guardians comes in. The new subscription service alerts subscribers when one of their passwords is found listed for sale on the dark web. By taking a proactive approach, businesses can prevent their financials, employee records, company data, and customer information—including social security numbers—from falling into the wrong hands. “We want to ensure people understand that this service is available and that they should have good password hygiene, including never using the same password for more than one website or login,” Henson says.

J.M.W. Turner: Quest for the Sublime, an exhibit organized by the Tate in London. This is the exhibition’s sole appearance in the U.S., and it runs through the end of May. Quest for the Sublime includes approximately 75 works of art by Joseph Mallord William Turner, widely recognized as Britain’s greatest painter and considered among the most highly regarded landscape painters in Western art. The paintings, watercolors, and sketches convey the artist’s perception of human emotions and nature’s volatility through extreme contrasts.

LUNCHBOXWAX: A BADASS BRAND IN SEARCH OF BOLD LEADERS

How does a brand devoted solely to body waxing keep producing fresh headlines and storefronts? The secret is in the culture. LunchboxWax doesn’t do inauthenticity. When CEO Debi Lane founded the body waxing brand in 2010, she knew there were others in the wax-only industry, and one big brand dominating the space at the time, but that didn’t make her shy away. In fact, she leaned in. She knew that there was room and a need for a brand that was built with one main focus – its people. “We knew we had a superior waxing method to our competition, but what we wanted to do was humanize the guest experience and empower our workforce – that is what was missing out there.” And that was the birth of the LunchboxWax culture. “Make no mistake,” Lane says, “we are passionate about our culture, but we are equally focused on the business side. Hair keeps growing and we keep ripping it out – it’s a good business model!”

“When we meet with potential franchisees, we’re clear that they need to truly buy-in,” says Lane. “From one community serving another, to honoring all bodies, to our culture of beauty, collaboration, and purpose, what we hear back is pure excitement. They understand that we are building something very special – a movement! With what other brand can you embrace tenets like that?” That uncompromising spirit has paid off. Listed as one of the country’s fastest-growing franchises, with write-ups in Entrepreneur and the New York Post, and a turn-key model with modest start-up costs, LunchboxWax is poised to tap the $14B waxing and salon market. But the proof resides at the ground level. “Our franchise partners strive to be a positive force in their communities, personally and

professionally,” says Lane. “And our commitments are paying off, from our guests to waxologists to franchise owners, I’ll gladly stack our reviews against any other brand.” Potential partners are lining up. Before they decide to join the LunchboxWax family, Lane encourages them to visit a salon. She cites: “We want them to feel what we are talking about – what makes us stand apart from our competition. Once they experience our waxing technique and vibe, they’re hooked – just like our guests!” “We instantly thought it’d be a fit for our community,” says Bridge D’Urso, a franchise partner in Oregon. “Then I went into one of the salons to see for myself, and there was no doubt this would be my next adventure.”

“Our mission has remained the same since our inception: be bold, be real, and success will follow.” - Debi Lane, Founder and CEO

Fellow franchise owner Neal Habas agrees: “Walk into any salon, and the competence and kindness is palpable. The energy resonates and tells a great story. It’s natural to want to be a part of it.” With a number of prime territories open, endless opportunity awaits. But as Lane says, “Only the bold need apply.” Learn more about LunchboxWax franchising by calling 833-426-1198 or visit lunchboxfranchise. com/sw.

WOMEN TAKE THE LEAD IN FRANCHISING

start at the top with the franchise insiders every year, more women get involved in franchising, says Jill Johnson, who co-founded The Franchise Insiders with her husband, Jack. Women now own more than 1 in 3 franchise outlets in the United States, up from just 1 in 4 a decade earlier, according to Franchise Business Review. The Johnsons’ no-fee consulting firm helps hundreds

of clients find the franchise opportunities best suited to make them successful. The Johnsons’ compensation comes from commissions paid by franchisors. For women entering the workforce later in life, investing in a franchise may be more appealing than starting at the bottom of the corporate ladder or launching an unproven

startup venture. “Franchising provides a great road map for success for investors of all ages and backgrounds,” Jill says. That’s where the Johnsons shine. “We know which franchises have the right kind of infrastructure and support ecosystem for each type of client, and we can help them make the right investment,” Jack says. Along with helping firsttime investors, the Johnsons also assist seasoned franchisees who are looking to diversify and add new franchises to their portfolio. “All of this knowledge base is applied to help everyone find their best franchise match,” Jack says. Popular franchise categories for women investores include child services, education, health care and senior care, business-to-business services, travel, and real estate. Owning a franchise allows entrepreneurs to work on their own schedule—you don’t have to miss out on life or on your close relationships with family and friends, Jill says. The financial independence you achieve with business ownership can lead to many rewards. The Franchise Insiders offers its “Business Builder Assessment” at no cost. The online assessment helps clients see how their skills and interests align with different opportunities. The Johnsons work with clients until they find the perfect match.

PAVE THE WAY TO BUSINESS FREEDOM Many of SealMaster’s products are in high demand as winter turns to spring.

TO SEAL THE deal as a fran-

manufacture and/or distribute pavement sealer and a full line of pavement maintenance products and equipment. Your desire to take control of your future and realize the rewards of owning your own business is important, says communications director Debbie Petok Hufford. “Large, protected territories—some are entire states— afford single-unit franchisees incredible income potential,” Petok Hufford says. “Franchisees can also open as many storefronts as their geographic market can profitably bear.” SealMaster also offers distribution-only franchises. Sales opportunities abound for franchisees. Pavement maintenance contractors and city highway and street departments often rely on SealMaster as their one-stop source

for pavement maintenance products and equipment. As winter turns to spring, Petok Hufford notes, pothole patch is also among the brand’s lineup of products. “The pavement maintenance market is huge,” says Petok Hufford. Parks and recreation departments use SealMaster’s SportMaster products for tennis courts, running tracks, skate parks, and more. As a SealMaster franchisee, you can offer products, equipment, and training to help entrepreneurs starting their sealcoating contracting businesses. Franchise opportunities are available coast to coast, along with international distribution and licensed manufacturing opportunities. And SealMaster products are distributed worldwide.

learn to run your own show if you’re ready to call the shots yourself, consider becoming a part of a franchise consulting business that helps others achieve their ambitious entrepreneurial goals through franchising. That’s just what Alesia Visconti did after 20 years in corporate America, where she worked with people making career transitions. She joined FranServe as a franchise consultant and never looked back. She eventually acquired the company and is now its president and CEO. “We’re not an uptight, structured corporation, Visconti says. “We take business seriously, but we do have fun, she says. FranServe’s annual convention is at Disney World, for example. That robust company culture stems from several core values: “integrity is everything; grow or die; teamwork gets results. FranServe’s three-avenue strategy guides people becoming franchise consultants, assists clients investing in their own franchises, and assists franchise brands looking to expand. Women are flocking to the once male-dominated field, Visconti says. Consultants and franchisees achieve work-life balance more easily than they would working for someone else in another field. “Your vibe attracts your tribe, she says. FranServe consultants narrow down clients’ fran-

chise choices by helping them assess their interests, investment level, territories, and their desired level of involvement—some may prefer a more hands-on role in a franchise, while others prefer to be an absentee owner. You’re a coach, an adviser, a matchmaker, and more, all at no charge to your client,

Visconti says. Franchisors pay you referral fees when clients invest. You also connect clients to financing opportunities they might need. Food franchises remain very popular, Visconti says. “But we have 80 categories of franchises. People don’t know this until talking to a franchise consultant.

Right at Home gives you the freedom to grow and be successful while also helping you bring meaningful, quality care to families, she says. Each family has a unique journey. Right at Home tailors its services in a way that allows clients to retain their independence and dignity, while still

getting the care and attention they need. Magyar first encountered the home care industry from the other side. Her grandmother needed home care for Parkinson’s disease, and her husband’s grandmother needed care for dementia. Launching her Orlando, Florida, franchise felt natural. Right at Home’s corporate staff and her fellow franchisees made it easy to learn the ins and outs, says Magyar. Her husband, Adam, joined her in the business and manages the office while she focuses on marketing and training. “I can work ‘mom hours’ and catch up at night, volunteer at school, and pick up the kids, which is very important,” Magyar says, adding that the community knows you’re there to help.

With Right at Home, Nikki Magyar found a business that makes a difference.

“A Right at Home business owner needs to effectively communicate across multiple channels with clients, families, multiple referral sources, office staff, and caregivers,” says Jen Chaney, Senior Director of Franchise Development. Magyar says her caregivers treat clients like they are taking care of their own grandmother.

FOLLOW THE SIGNS TO SUCCESS WOMEN SHAPING THE future of franchising are finding great opportunities with FASTSIGNS. “There is no glass ceiling to break through because you are your own boss,” says Catherine Monson, the president and CEO of FASTSIGNS International. “It is empowering.” FASTSIGNS provides sign, graphics, and visual communications services to franchisees’ local communities. The company is celebrating its 35th anniversary. With 700 FASTSIGNS locations and expansion in the works, the number of women franchisees is growing, Monson says. “We have seen a number of franchisees transition their business to their daughters, as

well as more female spouses who have chosen to become active in the management of the business,” she says. Shawn Glenn and her husband, Mark, took ownership of FASTSIGNS of Carrollton, Texas, in 2011 and now own three more locations in the

Dallas area. “Becoming a FASTSIGNS franchisee has allowed me the opportunity to own my own business, enjoy financial profitability, and maintain the flexibility I need to raise our family,” Shawn says. FASTSIGNS’ operational resources, training and support, and diligent teamwork have made owning FASTSIGNS centers “the perfect investment.” Nikki Taheri, with her husband, Brendan Duane, recently converted her two-decade-old business in Bayonne, New Jersey, to a FASTSIGNS center. “Beyond the national brand name recognition, FASTSIGNS gives us access to new resources, immeasurable support, and vendor relationships that allow our business to provide additional services to our customers.”

a culture of growth lunchboxwax’s culturefirst climate not only attracts investors, waxologists, and clients. It also steers the company’s growth. Rosie Keller launched her LunchboxWax speed waxing salon nearly five years ago in Chandler, Arizona, after a career in commercial real estate. The culture of collaboration, and purpose inspired her. LunchboxWax offers speedy service centered on soft-wax hair-removal techniques while giving clients a luxury spa experience. Keller’s community took to the service quickly. Plus, she enjoys the opportunity to give back and pay it forward by helping others learn new business skills. Heather Dixon was a stay-at-home mom when she discovered Keller’s LunchboxWax salon. She says the salon logo and the company’s culture spoke to her. “It’s cheeky, driven, with purpose,” she says. Dixon opened her own LunchboxWax. “We wax every body. Two words,” she says. As LunchboxWax grows and expands, the brand wants to become a movement, says Debi Lane, LunchboxWax’s founder and CEO. “Hundreds of franchise partners and thousands of waxologists work on millions of people every year while representing our culture. It leads to those people passing along positive energy.” Bridge D’Urso’s two LunchboxWax salons in the Portland, Oregon, area, help her

achieve a work-life balance. “It didn’t look like that three years ago,” D’Urso says, recalling the daily grind of launching her business. The rewards for her hard work include personal time she can devote to sailing. She also has time at work to mentor women as they grow into leadership roles. When she started, she envisioned what life she wanted in five years. “I’m not far from that,” D’Urso says.

LunchboxWax’s company culture helps inspire franchisees.

Lisa van Loben Sels says bringing LunchboxWax to Seattle this year complements the physical therapy practice she opened in 2003. “They really do promote positive culture from the corporate level down,” says van Loben Sels, who also coaches a high school swim team. “These strong and empowered women give back to the community and help create the next generation of amazing women,” Lane says.

One Question

Catch Alison acting alongside Patrick Stewart in the first season of Star Trek: Picard on CBS All Access.

Alison Pill,

what inspired you to become an actor?

PHOTOGRAPHY BY CATIE LAFFOON

The feeling I got from watching really, really good actors. Growing up, I loved Katharine Hepburn and Cate Blanchett and all of these strong women with powerful voices telling cool stories. I thought, That’s the kind of thing that I would like to do. I started acting when I was 10, and I’ve been with my manager for 22 years, which is a very odd thing. First, it’s a rarity to have survived with any sanity, let alone still be working together and loving it. I’m very lucky. I don’t know what I’d be doing if I wasn’t acting—I imagine being really happy as some sort of professor. My favorite thing in the world, besides acting, is to read, so any job that would require me to do that would be pretty fitting.
