Light Up Arizona When the sun goes down, Arizona’s vast blue skies turn into a canvas of stars. In other places, light pollution hides this view. But here, in the wide-open spaces between cities, the night skies are nothing short of dazzling—and we have the Dark Skies movement to thank for it. Begun by the International Dark-Sky Association, the movement aims to restore the joy of stargazing under clear skies unaffected by city lights. And there’s no better place to enjoy the sights than Arizona, home to more certified Dark Sky places than any other state.
Dark Cities, Bright Skies The stars shine brightest on six Dark-Skycertified cities in northern Arizona. In Sedona and nearby Big Park, you can enjoy a view of the skies silhouetted against towering red-rock cliffs, while in Flagstaff, in Lockett Meadow.
arizona office of tourism.indd 2
Even Fountain Hills, just 30 miles northeast of Phoenix, will provide a good look of Venus.
Park It for The Best Views Outside of Arizona’s cities, ten national and state parks have earned Dark-Sky certifications. See if you can identify constellations while visiting natural wonders such as Grand Canyon National Park, Petrified Forest National Park or Kartchner Caverns State Park. Or imagine how the sky looked to those who lived here hundreds or even thousands of years ago at Tumacacori National Historic Park or Wupatki National Monument. No matter where you choose to set your nighttime sights, one thing is certain—Arizona’s skies will put on a show you’ll never forget.

Gary’s Greeting
Happy New Year! With the dawn of a new year upon us, it’s a great time to reflect on the past as well as look forward to the year ahead with new resolutions. This time last year, we lost our beloved Founder and friend with the sad passing of Herb Kelleher on Jan. 3. I worked for and with Herb for more than three decades, and he taught me more than I could ever convey. One of his most important lessons was to always be prepared for the unexpected. “Prepare in the good times for the bad times that are sure to come,” he wisely said to me.
As I look ahead at the year 2020, the connection to having 20/20 vision is not lost on me. If hindsight is 20/20, Herb seemed to magically have the benefit of hindsight, foresight, and maybe even night vision goggles! Herb’s lesson is a powerful one: Try to see and anticipate what’s around the next corner. Having 20/20 vision doesn’t necessarily mean you have perfect vision—it only indicates the sharpness or clarity of vision at a distance. It’s so important to have that clarity to know your purpose, your past, your present, and your future.
Last year was far from perfect, and it was chock-full of the unexpected. With the passing of Herb and former CEO Jim Parker, a government shutdown, unprecedented weather, and the grounding of the Boeing 737 MAX, it was arguably the most challenging year in my 33-year career at Southwest. I know Herb would be proud to know that, indeed, we were prepared, and we prevailed with stellar results, stronger than ever. Likewise, I’m so incredibly proud of our Employees for their resiliency and perseverance. Next year, we’ll celebrate our 50th anniversary, a major milestone for our entire Southwest Family. As we look ahead, we do so prepared for the unexpected, with clear vision and high hopes that our best days are ahead. Happy New Year!

Fighting Human Trafficking
Southwest® recognizes Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month. At Southwest Airlines®, our Heart is to take care of people and do what’s right by championing our communities. During the month of January, advocates, organizations, and individuals worldwide unite to raise awareness about the serious issue of human trafficking—a problem Southwest is passionate about combating. Last year, to support global efforts to eliminate human trafficking, we launched an online curriculum for our Employees. The purpose of this curriculum is to provide an overview of the crime, including better understanding of what human trafficking is and how our Employees can take action if they suspect they have encountered a potential trafficking situation. For the content in this curriculum, Southwest partnered with the nonprofit Polaris, a leader in the global fight to eradicate modern slavery. This
launch was embraced by our Employees and is just the first step on this journey. Southwest will introduce additional training for our Customer-facing Employees that will focus on specific operational processes and procedures. This issue is prevalent in our own industry, which makes it personal for Southwest. Although human trafficking does not always involve the movement or transportation of people, 38 percent of survivors in Polaris-led focus groups said they traveled by plane at some point during their exploitation. In addition to providing our Employees with these resources, Southwest also supports the work of our nonprofit partners Polaris, United Against Human Trafficking, and Rethreaded. Their programs and services aid in identification, rescue, restoration, and/or prevention efforts. Through monetary and ticket donations, Southwest supports these organizations in fulfilling their missions. To learn more about human trafficking and the organizations working hard to end it, visit uaht.org, polarisproject.org, and rethreaded.com. —Carolyn Nutting & Rachel Barry, Communications To request help or report suspected human trafficking, call the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888373-7888 or text “help” to BeFree (233733).

I’m so encouraged by the work CR/RR Representative Cheyenne A. did to surprise a Customer who sent the following note: “My wife and I met in an online game about 10 years ago, and I flew on my first-ever flight to meet her in December 2010. I picked up the inflight magazine, which had a guide on how to make an origami goldfish from a dollar bill. I made one and gave it to her when we first met, and she always kept it in her wallet. We’re now very happily married, but about six months ago, her wallet was stolen. She didn’t care about anything in it except that goldfish. We’re coming up on our wedding anniversary, and I want to surprise her with another one. So here’s my request: Is there any way you guys can track down that page from your magazine? I know replacing that keepsake will mean the world to my wife.” Cheyenne found a digital copy of the article but didn’t stop there; she sent the Customer physical copies of the magazine, goldfish origami that she made, and a signed Southwest banner. Cheyenne’s Servant’s Heart shines bright, and I’m sure she made them Customers for life! —Event Specialist Jessie R.

OUTFIT ASSIST
OPER ATION: RETRIEVE THE RING
I have always loved Southwest for more reasons than I can count, but I have to say that you now have a customer for life. On my flight home from Dallas to Austin, I had what one might call a wardrobe malfunction. The zipper on the back of my dress split wide-open, revealing far more of me than I would like other Passengers to experience. I was able to back out of my row to the rear of the plane, which is when Flight Attendant Sara K. jumped into action. She attempted to assist with my zipper, but we quickly realized there was no saving my ill-fated dress. Sara then took her wings off her own jacket and handed me the jacket so I could wear it through the airport, along with her address to send it back to her when I could. This takes “shirt off her back” to a whole new level! Sara absolutely embodies Southwest’s spirit of service and deserves recognition for saving the day. Thank you, Sara! —Southwest Customer Kelly W.
At the end of an overnight, I was preparing to leave my hotel when I realized I was missing my wedding ring. In a panic, I ran back to my room and frantically searched for my ring to no avail. I told the front desk about my situation and called hotel security before I left, and they assured me they’d re-check my room. As I rode back to the airport, my heart sank as I thought I might never get the ring back. Thankfully, as we boarded the plane, the hotel called—they had found my ring. However, they wouldn’t be able to send it back until later that week. That’s when First Officer Ryan G. stepped in. He had just finished his day and was heading to the same hotel. He got my information and said he would mail it back to me himself. With classic Southwest Hospitality, he paid for the shipping charges and made sure my ring was in the mail that day! Thank you, Ryan, for going above and beyond. —First Officer Scott S.

TECHNOLOGY HAS MADE DATING MORE COMPLICATED & IMPERSONAL. HIRING A MATCHMAKER MIGHT BE THE ANSWER...
BREAKING UP WITH ONLINE DATING
A
t first, Larry Chiarelli, director at a tech start up, thought he was doing all he needed. Sign up on multiple dating websites. Meet lots of women. Eventually, the right one would come along – except she never did. So he decided to bring in the professionals and hired It’s Just Lunch. It’s Just Lunch’s matchmakers got to know him and his preferences. They selected his dates, arranged schedules, and even made the restaurant reservations. Dating became stress-free and fun. Larry was a practical guy and didn’t believe in love-at-first-sight… until IJL introduced him to Ping.
¤ ¤
Dating life before joining It’s Just Lunch? Lawrence: Chaotic! I was meeting a lot of women but not the right women for me. Online dating was time-consuming and stressful. I needed someone to relieve me of the dating busy work so I could get some breathing room. I needed to slow things down to speed them up. It’s Just Lunch fit that criteria perfectly.
8 0 0.858.6 526
it's just lunch breaking up.indd 1
Why join It’s Just Lunch? Ping: I fly frequently for both work and fun. When I saw It’s Just Lunch in the airline magazine, it was as if the matchmaker was talking to me! One day after a particularly long flight and wanting to snuggle with someone and watch a movie, I decided it couldn’t hurt to give it a try.
Most enjoyable part of the It’s Just Lunch process?
I’d call back, get the details and run through my availability. The next thing I knew I was in front of an interesting woman having a great conversation.
L: I tell my clients an analogy all the time: Would you rather drive across the country in a Toyota Corolla or a BMW 5 series? They always say the 5 series. You get what you pay for. Investing in yourself and your future with someone special means investing in the right matchmaking service. For me that was It’s Just Lunch.
L: Easy and convenient. The company I was working for was going through a merger so I was away from home quite a bit. I’d finish my day and there would be a message from my matchmaker telling me about my next match.
The success of It’s Just Lunch is built on creating high-quality matches in low-pressure situations. In 28 years, they’ve set up millions of first dates. Make meeting someone special a priority. Get in touch at 800-858-6526 or www.itsjustlunch.com.

Dear Editor,
I love reading Southwest: The Magazine when I travel for work or business. Evan Thomas’ article, “O’Connor’s Law,” in the October 2019 issue was wonderful! Sandra Day O’Connor was born in my hometown of El Paso, Texas, and her travels have taken me to places that I only dream of visiting. I didn’t know a lot about her before reading the article, but I, too, loved reading National Geographic as a kid just as O’Connor did. Thank you for all of the interesting articles.

We hate to be the bearers of bad news, but that friend who bailed on your birthday dinner may not have actually been sick. According to a survey commissioned by Sling TV, when it comes to passing on plans, nearly half of us have given phony reasons for not wanting to socialize. And rather than hang out, an overwhelming 76 percent of those excuse makers wanted to stay home and relax, ideally while watching TV or a movie. So, are you still free later? Oh, OK. We understand.

Hotel Peter & Paul
When Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church shuttered in 2001, the New Orleans sanctuary stood vacant for almost two decades before a collaboration between design and development firm ASH NYC and local partner Nathalie Jordi brought it back to life. Today, the hip hotel, which opened in the Marigny district in late 2018, is a testament to Old World elegance. The restoration of the grounds— which include the church, as well as a former schoolhouse, rectory, and convent—lovingly preserved original details, from the stained-glass windows to wainscoted hallways. And of the 71 guest rooms, no two are alike. In the Rectory, peach-hued rooms feature antique fireplaces, while the School House’s color palette is inspired by religious paintings and tapestries from the 14th to 18th century. But no matter where you rest your head, don’t forget to visit the Convent for a banana split at Sundae Best. No slacks necessary. From $119

One-Winged Angel
Jason Yovu put his collection of more than 1,000 video games to good use when he opened Retro Game Bar in Portland, Oregon. There, patrons can play console classics like Castlevania while sipping cocktails named for pieces of video game lore. The One-Winged Angel pays direct tribute to Final Fantasy VII’s superhuman antagonist Sephiroth. The base is Bank Note blended scotch. From there, “I suppose this gets pretty nerdy,” Yovu says. He’s right. The herbaceous Bénédictine liqueur is meant to represent the ancient alien whose cells are injected into Sephiroth by the evil Shinra corporation, while the blue curaçao is the Mako energy that gives the villain his power. The black walnut bitters are the dark magic sphere under his control. You got that? No worries. Just trust us that the robust, sweet flavor is enough reason to press play on this drink.

Dating life pre-It’s Just Lunch?

Erik: I mainly met women through friends and work associates. It was always awkward and hit or miss. Danielle: I had been divorced for a few years and was trying to figure out how to get back into the dating world. The online thing was not what I wanted to do, and not the caliber of men I was look looking for. A friend of mine met her husband through It’s Just Lunch so I decided to give it a try.

Challenges of re-entering the dating scene? E: The rules had changed. It’s a part-time job and too much work to meet someone online. I wanted to meet someone face-to-face right off the bat. My time is valuable and I didn’t want to waste it getting to know someone in the virtual world only to realize “this isn’t going to work out”. D: I was out of the singles scene for a couple years. I liked It’s Just Lunch because it was a commitment to “I’m going to take that step and venture out.”
Benefits of working with a matchmaker? D: As you get older, it’s harder to meet people. I was surrounded by married people. The matchmakers introduce you to people you wouldn’t normally meet in your day-to-day life. That’s what I absolutely loved about it. I also love their feedback process after every date. The owner of Esby Apparel showcases pieces inspired by classic men’s fashion. Stephanie Beard spent a decade working as a designer in New York for brands like Tommy Hilfiger, Levi’s, and Converse before launching Esby Apparel in 2014. The fashion label for women and men is inspired by traditional menswear pieces—something Beard knows a thing or two about. “I’d been collecting these ideas for years while I was designing men’s clothing but none of the silhouettes would fit me,” Beard says. “I have a curvy body, so that was my goal: create button-down shirts that would fit through women’s hips and shirtdresses that have a masculine aesthetic. I’ve coined it ‘menswear mentality.’” Each collection, which can be found in her bright and airy storefront, is made using all-natural fabrics. “My pieces have an ode to a timeless silhouette. They’re never too trendy, and they won’t go out of style in a couple of months.”

That’s a Wrap
Protect your food and the environment with these colorful, reusable wraps. It’s a hard—if cliché—truth that we are what we eat. Consider Meli Wraps, then, a sort of health food for a world that’s feasted for years on single-use plastics. Made from beeswax, organic cotton, and tree resin, these food wraps are as good for the environment as they are for covering the bowl of homemade tabbouleh you’re bringing to your friend’s potluck. Those plant oils help keep the food fresh, and do mind the beeswax—it acts as a sort of natural sealant that keeps the material closed tightly. The ideal handshake lasts seconds.

They say you can tell a lot about a person by their handshake. Apparently, you can also tell a lot about a handshake by how long it lasts. In a study done by the University of Dundee, any handshake longer than three seconds caused heightened levels of anxiety in those receiving the gesture. During these longer greetings, participants were less likely to laugh and their smiles were more likely to fade. Anything shorter, and the participants didn’t get a chance to smile at all. Next time you reach out, be sure to count to three—or try a fist bump.

Tennis taught by Serena Williams and cooking lessons from Gordon Ramsay— become an expert by learning from one. Here’s how co-founder and CEO David Rogier describes the online learning platform: Our mission is to make it possible for anybody in the world to be able to learn from the best. The big inspiration came from my grandmother, who had an extremely tough life. She fled to New York City from Poland to escape the Nazis, and she eventually became a doctor. And the lesson she always taught me was that education is the only thing someone can’t take away from you. MasterClass’ online classes are an average of two to
five hours, and you can learn at your own pace, from any place, on almost any device. Our mission is to make it possible for anybody in the world to be able to learn from the best, and our instructors have devoted their lives to honing their craft. There’s only one place online where you can take a class from Martin Scorsese or Annie Leibovitz or Steph Curry. And what they’re going to teach you isn’t just their craft, but also life lessons that can change how you see and do things— they can change who you are as a person.

TEX AS FOREVER The best city in Texas is San Antonio because that’s where I live and where I grew up. Everything that I know and love is here. You grow up in Texas and it becomes a part of you in a romantic, Tim Riggins-y way. STUNT CASTING The current NBA player that would make the best lead in a romantic comedy is [Denver Nuggets center] Nikola Jokić. He seems perpetually annoyed by everything, and I think that’s super funny.
You learn a lot of little, interesting truths when you’re teaching kids. You figure out that people can sense when you’re excited about something and when you’re not excited. That’s the reason my writing is always a celebration of a thing that I enjoy. If you talk to a person about something they enjoy, it becomes contagious. It makes you feel a little better. And in every chapter of every book or in every article I write, there’s a point I’m trying to make. By the time you get done reading it, you should know the thing that I want you to know. It’s the same when you’re teaching: “By the end of this class, I need for you to know what the eight phases of the moon are. By the end of this essay, I need for you to know why the raptors from Jurassic Park were misunderstood.”

WORK Solution
Edge: Turning Adversity Into Advantage, is out Jan. 28.
See a Better Way Forward
Hard work will take you only so far, says Laura Huang, an associate professor at Harvard Business School. To get to the top, you have to shape how others view you. You’ve written about “hard work, plus.” What’s the plus? “We’re taught from a young age that success is all about hard work. We know that hard work is critical, but it’s not enough. A lot of outcomes are determined by how other people perceive us. When we can flip these perceptions in our favor, that’s when we create our own edge. We need to empower ourselves.”
48 Southwest january 2020
F1_solution_MW.indd 48
What can you do to find your edge? “Think first and foremost about how you enrich and provide value to other people. What is it that makes you you? Is it that you were raised by immigrants? Is it that you prefer creating and building to influencing? When you know these things, you can be better at guiding the people you’re interacting with.”
How can you help other people recognize your value? “Put yourself in the place of the other person—not just so you can see how they see you, but also to understand them. Balance inquiry and advocacy. A lot of times we go into situations wanting to make our strongest points. But in many instances, advocacy can backfire. Take a stance of inquiry. Say to them, ‘Help me understand.’”
How else can we guide people’s perceptions? “If you realize people have an incorrect perception of you, stop and then redirect them to who you truly and authentically are. People are going to have perceptions of you whether you help them or not. But it’s much harder to turn people around when they already have an impression of you. You can control how they should see you in the first place.”

Turning Point
I fell out of step with my own life. Then I made a move to get back on the beat.

or the better part of a year, I spent every weekend working as a videographer for Showbiz National Talent, on the elite kids and teens dance competition circuit. My job was to send footage to the judges and make sure

families at home could see the performances via livestream. From a tripod at the back of the country’s most beautiful historic theaters, I filmed unending parades of grand jetés and sequins, medleys of Justin Timberlake and Sia booming through the halls. I’d carefully zoom in and out to changes in the music. Tracking sudden leaps and blooming formations came naturally. Long hours disappeared as I entered the story of each routine. It almost felt like dancing. Once, after the last trophy was awarded in Albuquerque, New Mexico, one of the judges approached me while we were waiting for late-night takeout at the hotel bar. “What studio are you from?” he asked, mistaking me for a dance teacher. “No studio,” I said. “I’m the Showbiz videographer.” “You look like you’re a dancer,” he said with a hint of suspicion. “I used to be.” On the elevator up to my room, I glowed at the recognition. I knew I was cut from the same cloth as these teachers, the same cloth as my mother, a professional ballerina. But, more than 15 years away from classes and stages, my capacity as a dancer had become irrelevant. On tour with Showbiz, though, I could sometimes feel it in my blood. My mom danced her way through the 1970s, first as a january 2020 Southwest 55

student at Texas Christian University and then with the Fort Worth Ballet Association, known today as the Texas Ballet Theater. There’s a photo of her in the Dallas Morning News in April 1978. Jan Hines, left; blonde, petite, and tough, en pointe with the legendary Arthur Mitchell, who founded the Dance Theatre of Harlem. A year after that photo appeared, an elderly couple drove up a hill on a two-lane road near my mom’s hometown of Tyler, Texas. They were in the wrong lane and hit my mom head-on. She lost a kidney, a kneecap, a month to a hospital stay, and her career as a performer. She was 27. Teaching and taking classes sustained my mom for decades after the wreck. She rented a studio on the town square in Lancaster, Texas, where my brother and I grew up. It was known lovingly as “The Dance Castle.” My friends took ballet, tap, and jazz in the modest second-floor walkup, next to a boarding house for cats. So did I, a passionate but undisciplined student who mouthed the words to Color Me Badd’s “All 4 Love” in the mirror, against policy. Rehearsal was her truest love, my mom often told me. Building. Progress. The work was the heart of dance, not the show. T RADING YOUR JAZZ SHOES for Asics to be a high school cheerleader was something of a Texas tradition. If your school didn’t have a dance team at the dawn of the 21st century, then the alternative was nailing stiff hip-hop-inspired routines set to cheer mixes with whipcrack sound effects. In high school, showing off and making friends became more important than devoting myself to art. I sold it hard from the front of bowling pin formations every time we danced to songs like Missy Elliott’s “Gossip Folks” and Lenny Kravitz’s “American Woman.” My training faded, and I backed away in college, opting instead to
write about the arts as a journalist. If I wasn’t going to be the best, then why do it at all? My body became that of a passive observer, ideal for staying as inconspicuous as possible in any given setting. Stumbling through the occasional adult hip-hop class confirmed to me that yes, I loved dance, and yes, I had lost it. T HE DAY I STARTED dancing again had not been a good day. I woke up in Brooklyn without my boyfriend. I had thought he would be house-sitting with me for my brother and sister-in-law, who’d gone to London without their dogs, Phoebe and Delilah. This was a weeklong trip I’d dreamt of taking with him since we’d met five years before. Sudden distance and three weeks of stonewalling and confusion had given way to a phone call during which he’d said, coldly, that the relationship needed work he could not do. Days later, I took Phoebe and Delilah to the Williamsburg Bridge, numb to the sunlight. Trains rattled beside us. After we returned, I lay down and felt a weight settle in my limbs. For about an hour, a sense of grief pressed me into the bed. I did nothing else but lay still, as if waiting. This routine went on: the bridge, the walk, the stillness. Finally, I realized the frozen feeling always hit at about 11 a.m., the latest hour I’d get a text from him if we were apart, and the hour during which we’d often start our days together on the weekends. My bones seemed to remember this structure. The proof of this daily habit, of pure attachment, struck me. So did the count of hours I’d stayed in the apartment while my favorite city swirled outside, one flight of stairs below. The need to get up became a matter of urgency. Whatever I did over and over, my body would remember. As someone who deals with chronic depression, I have employed many tricks to stay on

my feet. Sometimes they work, and sometimes they don’t. There was one I hadn’t tried with consistency in a long time. That afternoon I needed an hour without my phone. I needed loud music. I needed to keep myself from slipping. I pulled on a pair of floral bike shorts, put my hair up, crated the dogs, and took the train to Midtown for dance class. BROADWAY DANCE CENTER in New York City was among the first studios in the world to offer drop-in classes, the kind anyone can take for a single fee without registering in advance. Today, there are more than 350 weekly sessions to choose from, at various levels of ability. One can study vogueing, Broadway jazz, or the flow-ier jazz fusion; there’s a class devoted to locking, one to jumps and turns, and another to theater tap (not to be confused with street tap). Ever wondered what Madonna’s dancers do when they aren’t on tour? Or where you might find the choreographers who give So You Think You Can Dance cast members quick-turn training? They’re often helming classes at top-tier studios like BDC. For years, I had watched them intently on Instagram. Via social media, I drew connections among the who’s-who of dance west of Times Square like it was my beat. (It was not; I wrote about dance sometimes, but kept the BDC fantasy sacred.) Walking up West 45th Street, I swore I recognized the faces of dancers leaving the studio. The 3 p.m. beginner hip-hop class with Leslie Feliciano drew a dancer who’d just moved to New York from Israel. There was a pair of shy friends from Queens and a tall, commanding student who seemed to be spending the entire day at the center. He strode to the front of the studio at Feliciano’s request so the back line could watch. Feliciano’s style was all Latin dance beat with the heavy

shoulders of hip-hop. I could isolate my neck to slide to the left at his instruction. The right, not so much. Footwork across the floor was a baffling equation. Rhythm, though, would never leave me. The song with a clap-trap breakdown in the intro sounded familiar. When I folded and extended my arms on the counts as he taught us a combo, Feliciano noticed. “Where are you from?” he asked me. My face flushed. “Texas,” I said, surprised at how proud I sounded, not for my home, but that I’d made it to class. “I see you, Cactus. Welcome to New York.” AUTHOR JULIA CAMERON introduced the concept of the “shadow artist” to creative circles. Latent artists, she contends, are often themselves drawn to these worlds as facilitators. A talent agent may have once loved acting and dropped their own practice to nurture a career that helps
actors succeed. A musician might set her work down and decide instead to become a counselor, applying pent-up creative energy to solve the problems of others and, perhaps, satisfy her parents with a more traditional career. Or a dancer might fall away and circle that world with a camera, until there was nowhere left to hide. Since taking the class in New York, I have begun a daily practice of creating short movement pieces. While recording with the webcam on my laptop, I combine steps I’ve learned through tutorial videos and then improvise to music. After about an hour of experimenting like this, I review the footage and assemble the movements. Finally, I post the video on Instagram to stay accountable. Every day I wake up thinking about a song, the shapes in it and what I might try and make of them. I’m now working up to three classes a week. I’ve committed to at least 10 hours a week of additional
training and conditioning in a converted studio at my home. Just days after I started sharing my dance videos on social media, two friends asked me to collaborate. It will take years to regain the flexibility and endurance I need to learn more in the realms of contemporary and jazz fusion, the styles which most interest and elude me. But little by little, my sessions are improving my physical memory for choreography. The concept of increments as a way forward has never been so clear. My need to grow is now greater than my fear of being misunderstood, of being too slow, of promising so much of my time to one thing. When you think about it, dance is learning to begin again, over and over. It’s a lot of work. But for the first time ever, I believe I’m worth it. KIDS ARE NATURAL CLIMBERS. Just ask the parents who have to keep their toddler from scaling the furniture. Or head to a nearby jungle gym. Or think back to your childhood dreams of living in a treehouse. All children must have an innate desire to defy the earth and reach for the sky, if for no other reason than their hands and feet make it possible and there’s more to see up there than down here. But there are born climbers, and then there’s Brooke Raboutou. Climbing is the family business. Her older brother, Shawn, is an elite rock climber with a passion for outdoor bouldering. Her father, Didier Raboutou, a Frenchman whose flashy style made him stand out in toplevel climbing competitions, installed homemade climbing walls in his children’s playrooms. Her mother, Robyn Erbesfield-Raboutou, a four-time World Cup climbing champion, has coached some of the world’s best young climbers, including Brooke and Shawn. It’s not much of an exaggeration to say that Raboutou has been climbing since before she could walk. If you tune in to watch rock climbing make its debut at the Olympics this summer, you’re going to hear some variation of that line repeated again and again. You’ll probably get sick of hearing it, but it’s true that climbing is in her blood. It’s a part of the reason the 18-year-old Boulder, Colorado, native could well become a household name in one of the country’s fastest-growing sports. If she hadn’t spent her childhood the way she did—hanging off walls and boulders, mostly—she likely wouldn’t have made history last August as the first American rock climber to qualify for the 2020 Summer Games in Tokyo. Raboutou will look to her family for support as she prepares for the Olympics. She will train in Boulder. There will be trips to Salt Lake City to meet up with the national team, and to Atlanta to consult with a speed specialist. There will be trainers, coaches, movement and body experts, physical therapists, massage therapists. She will visualize routes: where her hands and feet will go, how to move, how to hold on. Meditate. Focus on her breathing. She will represent Team USA. She will climb, every day. Like she always has.
F
amily vacations revolved around one activity. “We went on a lot of rock climbing trips,” Raboutou says. “Outdoor trips. Those were always the moments where I was like, ‘Wow. I love this.’” Living in Boulder made outdoor climbing a year-round possibility, and the family spent summers at their vacation house in France, climbing in the backyard gym or at the crags and boulders nearby. There were trips to Rodellar, Spain, to Kentucky’s Red River Gorge, and to the Rocklands in South Africa. Good climbers master a number of techniques and moves. When you’re supporting your own weight on awkwardly shaped holds that have barely enough room for two fingers, you may be required to contort your body in novel ways. You may be suspended at odd angles just as often as you’re ascending vertically. Some modern climbers have gone so far as to adopt parkour-like styles, seemingly bounding from one hold to another. In roped climbing, there’s equipment to manage. There are always decisions to make. Figuring out the best way to complete a route can be like solving a puzzle. Raboutou learned quickly that there’s more to climbing than climbing. From the beginning, she relished the physical and mental demands of the sport, which suited her analytical mind. Climbing requires as much thought as it does strength and endurance—Where do my hands go next? What if I move to the left here? Can I grip this hold while I swing the rest of my body to this next part? What if I fall? The fact that there were always new challenges to overcome satisfied her need to constantly push her limits. And the camaraderie and teamwork, which she first experienced climbing outdoors with her family, fit her lighthearted personality. Getting to go on vacations to some of the most jaw-dropping places on the planet was a plus. Outside of climbing, Raboutou has led a life that would be familiar to most American teenagers. She likes to keep busy. She spends time with her friends and enjoys schoolwork. After graduating from high school, she enrolled at the University of San Diego, with plans to get a degree in business. She had been living in a dormitory

before putting school on hold to train for the Olympics, which wasn’t an easy decision. Commitment to climbing has made some compromises necessary. “At times, when I’d be hanging out with friends and I had to leave for practice or competition or something like that, I felt like I was missing out. ‘Wouldn’t it be easier if I wasn’t a climber?’” Raboutou says. But she can’t imagine a day without it. “I need it.”
F
or much of its history, rock climbing took place exclusively outside because, well, that’s where all the rocks were. People have been scaling high elevations for thousands of years for all sorts of reasons, but climbing for pleasure is a more recent development. The 14th-century Italian poet Petrarch ascended the 6,273-foot Mont Ventoux out of “the wish to see what so great an elevation had to offer.” The English mountaineer George Mallory famously made attempts to summit Mount Everest “because it’s there.” Rock climbing has its roots in mountaineering and began to emerge as a distinct athletic pursuit in the late 19th century before expanding in the 20th. More and more people were recognizing the beauty of climbing for its own sake, and new equipment was making it easier and safer to take on more challenging ascents. The development of rappelling was significant, as was the use of carabiners and pitons, metal spikes that are forced into the rock, helping secure rope to wall and climber to rope. Traditional outdoor climbing is done using a roped system, with at least two climbers supporting each other. Other variations, like bouldering and free soloing, are done without a partner and without ropes. Indoors, bouldering walls are usually about 15 feet high, while walls for roped climbing are anywhere from 30 to 60 feet high. Outdoors, bouldering is reserved for smaller rock formations and routes that, relatively speaking, remain low to the ground. Free soloing is only for those with nerves of steel, as seen in the Oscar-winning 2018 documentary Free Solo, in which pro climber Alex Honnold scales the 3,000-foot El Capitan in Yosemite National Park with little more than chalk and the shoes on his feet. The first artificial climbing walls, whose holds were meant to call to mind the grip of outdoor rocks, started appearing in the United Kingdom in the 1960s. A professional indoor circuit would eventually follow from that. Still, many experienced climbers who thrive in indoor competition, like Raboutou, first fell in love with the sport in the outdoors, where the thrill of pitting yourself against nature can perhaps be more acutely felt. That was the case for Raboutou’s mother, who was 18 years old when her high school boyfriend took her climbing for the first time at Yonah Mountain in Georgia. Robyn Erbesfield-Raboutou climbed like she’d been doing it her whole life. “It made me feel very strong and
powerful,” she says. She was hooked, and soon was traveling on weekends to climb throughout the South. Before long she was competing professionally, winning the first climbing World Cup she entered. She met and fell in love with the French pro climber Didier Raboutou, and they married in 1993. By then, climbing was well on its way to becoming a more mainstream sport, complete with respectable corporate sponsorships. That respectability may have come as a shock to the self-described “dirtbags” who helped popularize climbing in the U.S. in the 1970s. Renouncing the structure of a 9-to-5 to spend every day crushing difficult climbs at Yosemite didn’t make for a career your parents would brag about, but it was a lifestyle that appealed to free spirits. With the spread of the indoor climbing gym, however, no longer did you have to live in a tent and forgo hot showers to train. You could just try out climbing routes in the renovated warehouse down the street. By the time Erbesfield-Raboutou decided to have children, climbing as a sport had bloomed. There were pro competitions in gyms, based on technical skill. Meanwhile, increasingly bold record-setting outdoor climbs continued. There is some crossover between the indoors

and outdoors. Today, climbing is as much for the diehard Yosemite dirtbags as it is for pros sponsored by The North Face and the amateurs who got their start in air-conditioned suburban gyms. Erbesfield-Raboutou climbed during both her pregnancies. Although there was never a conscious decision to raise her kids on a rock wall, she wanted to include her children in everything she did. “As soon as Shawn and Brooke were born, what do you do but go climbing?”
A
s the kids grew, so did youth climbing. This is probably not a coincidence. “As I saw both Shawn and Brooke become so passionate, I realized there wasn’t a structure for young climbers. For gymnastics, there are facilities all over the world where you can take a 2-year-old or a 3-year-old,” Erbesfield-Raboutou says. “There was nothing for climbing. I created ABC Kids Climbing for Shawn and Brooke.” When she opened ABC Kids Climbing in Boulder, it helped pioneer a model of safe, supervised spaces that allowed kids as young as 2 years old to indulge their inclination to climb. Meanwhile, the Raboutou children were already becoming youth climbing heroes. By the time she
turned 12, the youngest Raboutou had already set several records and was ready to compete with the best. Raboutou can rely on her family as much as she counts on her own work ethic and sense of humor. “She’s focused, but I feel like it always comes down to having fun with her,” says Meagan Martin, a pro climber and longtime friend of the Raboutou family. “Sometimes when you watch people compete, they look kind of mad, but she’s always having a good time.” Despite being a competitive individual sport, climbing nurtures a strong sense of togetherness. Close friends are frequently close competitors. Outdoors, your success and safety depend in a very real way on the person at the other end of the rope. Trust is essential. Enter any climbing gym, in any city, and you’re likely to hear shouts of encouragement and receive offers to join the community. The climbing world has its own code and particular rituals, but those can be learned. And those gyms are everywhere. Originally designed for outdoor climbers who wanted to keep fresh in between trips to their favorite wall, rock climbing gyms today take all comers. People who have never set foot at the crag are now rock climbers. Your co-workers, the january 2020 Southwest 69

a “flow state.” In the case of climbing, it describes an intense, Zenlike oneness between person and rock. To be in a flow state is to fear nothing—certainly not falling. Movement becomes instinctual. Your mind is focused on the climb. Everything else disappears. Your body will stick to the wall, your hands and feet will find the perfect For Raboutou (here with her brother Shawn and mother Robyn) and her family, climbing is a way of life.

acid, they get “pumped.” (Not to be confused with getting pumped up, in which case what they’re actually doing is getting stoked.) Since the country’s first commercial climbing gym opened in 1987, hundreds have followed. About 50 commercial gyms opened in the U.S. in 2018 alone, a growth rate of nearly 12 percent from the previous year, according to Climbing Business Journal. More parents are sending their kids to climbing gyms because they recognize the benefits of such a well-rounded sport. “It’s not all about strength and power,” says Marc Norman, the chief executive of USA Climbing. It’s also a mental workout that teaches problem-solving and persistence. And climbing’s newfound accessibility means that places as flat as Atlanta are now producing high-level competitive athletes, Norman says. The gym boom has accompanied the sport’s growing popularity, which continued to skyrocket when it was announced in 2016 that climbing would appear in the 2020 Olympic Games.
I
n climbing, mental fitness can be just as important as physical training. You’ll occasionally hear climbers talk about entering
holds, and you will continue upward because there is nothing in the world that exists right now except for you and this rock. Some climbers meditate. Almost all of the good ones, including Raboutou, visualize their climbs. Having studied the wall beforehand, they will imagine each step and grip and hold of the task ahead. Raboutou does yoga, too. “I don’t do it often enough,” she says. Last year, in the weeks before the International Federation of Sport Climbing World Championships in Japan, Raboutou was getting distracted during competitions. Her climbing suffered. “After every [event], she was going, ‘I’m so frustrated. I could hear the microphone,’ or ‘I listened to these people talk,’” her mother says. A strong finish in the world championships would ultimately qualify several athletes for the Olympics, and the pressure may have been getting to her. It was the first time Erbesfield-Raboutou could remember her daughter confessing to any doubts. “Brooke’s the kid who will say, ‘I’ve got it, Mom,’” she says. This time, Raboutou asked for help. Her parents taught her several techniques and told her to

members of your bocce league, even your grandmother—they’re all climbing. They speak the lingo, a combination of extreme sports slang and gearhead jargon. focus on her breathing, to calm her nerves. “To me, this is the sign of a champion. You’ve got it until you don’t have it. And if you don’t have it, you look to your team for support,” Erbesfield-Raboutou says. When it mattered the most, she did what she needed to. At the IFSC World Championships in August, Raboutou finished ninth. USA Climbing had its first Olympian.
G
iven the huge new platform of the Olympic Games, U.S. climbing officials expect 2020 to be a banner year for the sport. But if Raboutou is feeling nervous about competing on such a big stage, she isn’t showing it, only lamenting that she’s taking a semester off from school to ramp up her training. For the most part, her life will look much like it always has. She will spend time with her family. And she will climb. In October, just a couple months after her Olympic qualification, Raboutou fell during a competitive climbing event in Albuquerque. Although she wasn’t too seriously injured, she hurt her knee enough that she had to sit out the rest of the competition’s finals round. It wasn’t long before she was back in the gym, but it was a reminder, she says. She’d been getting too comfortable up there. Every climber falls, sometimes intentionally. In bouldering, it’s the fastest way back down. But accidental falls happen, even for people who have been climbing their entire lives. Setbacks are inevitable. Progress, like a climber scaling a wall, doesn’t always follow a straight line. Raboutou may have been born to climb, but she wasn’t born a great climber. What is it, then? Good genes? Hard work? The right breathing techniques? Maybe it’s simpler than all that. After she falls, she gets up. Alex Macon is an editor for this magazine. You can email him at alex.macon@paceco.com.

A NEW YEAR MEANS NEW OPPORTUNITIES
You don’t need 20/20 vision to see that 2020 is a great time to invest in a franchise. Owning a business can bring newfound freedom and professional success. By Jim Gold
find your why and find your way every search for a fran-
chise will be unique, says Jack Johnson, who co-founded The Franchise Insiders with his wife, Jill. Their no-fee consulting firm helps clients from a wide variety of backgrounds find the franchise opportunities that suit them best. “Whether it’s a family investing in their first franchise or a seasoned franchise veteran looking to diversify her portfolio, we see it all and share this insight with our clients,” Johnson says. The Johnsons work with more than 500 franchises in a number of fields, including
health and beauty, fitness, quick-service restaurants, senior care, home improvement, and even drone photography. With all that experience, the Johnsons not only give their clients the inside scoop on what is working and where to invest, but they also help clients discover their “why.” Everyone has a different why, Johnson says. A longtime corporate executive, for example, may want to beef up their annual net income and expedite retirement with a strong absentee franchise. A family may look to invest in a business for their children. With a strong economy,

many clients want to keep their jobs and add to their income by investing in an absentee-run franchise. Certain reporting techniques can help those clients save on income taxes, Johnson says. The Franchise Insiders relies on an online “Business Builder Profile” and personal consultations to help clients determine what they are looking for, accounting for each client’s goals, dreams, and unique skillsets. Using the Johnsons’ “Foundational Franchise Method,” clients can start building wealth with a fairly low-investment, recession-proof franchise, Johnson says. These services are free to clients. The Franchise Insiders earns commissions from franchisors. Franchise ownership approval is not automatic, and some approval processes can be notoriously difficult, Johnson says. “We know how to help our clients get approved for these franchise opportunities,” he says. “If they were going in on their own, they would not.” Franchise ownership is a long-term wealth building tool that should include a diverse portfolio of brands, Johnson says. You may want to stick with one franchise brand, or you might want to flip your franchise instead. “We guide our clients every step of the way,” he says.

Right at Home franchise is right now. The first of the nation’s more than 75 million baby boomers will turn 75 in 2021, says Eric Little, the chief development officer of Right at Home, one of the fastestgrowing home care franchise brands in the country. He wants to be sure quality franchise owners are in place to serve the growing number of elderly Americans who will want to stay at home as their need for care increases. Right at Home provides in-home care services allowing clients to retain their indepen-
dence and dignity, Little says. He’s looking for people seeking “Success with Significance,” the company’s trademarked phrase. Those people are internally driven and competitive. They already have successful careers but want their work to have more meaning, Little says. These are people like Steve Gettins, who opened his Right at Home franchise with his wife, Christina, in 2015 in Pottstown, Pennsylvania. Both had taken care of elderly relatives who’d fallen ill. “This is an industry that’s not going away,” Gettins says. Right at Home attracted him because of its resources, leadership, and mission of improving the lives of its clients. Gettins’ background was in sales and operations management for big businesses, but

he didn’t know the health care industry. Franchise training is thorough and deep, he says. “They give you a lot in a short time, and you have access to many subject matter experts.” Many franchisees are former executives, and they put their trust in Right at Home’s business model and experience, Little says. The company also focuses on recruiting talented caregivers who do “important, noble work,” Little says. Right at Home recognizes their good work through regional awards programs, and the company names a nationwide caregiver of the year. The new year is time for fresh starts, Little says. A person investing in Right at Home can have a real impact in their community. “The best is yet to come,” he says.

evoke the quaint small towns of the mid-20th century can help elderly people, especially those with Alzheimer’s or forms of dementia, feel more comfortable. “Franchise candidates are lining up and asking, ‘When can I start?’” says Peter Ross, Town Square CEO and the cofounder of Senior Helpers, the leading in-home senior care provider. Ten franchises are already sold and more are in the pipeline, Ross says. “2020 will be an amazing year,” he says. “We’re missiondriven with a high opportunity for profitability and success. And it’s really good for people.” Ross cited three elements that will help assure Town Square’s success: A “silver tsunami” is coming as an estimat-
ed 10,000 people a day turn 65; one-on-one home care is unaffordable for some families; and real estate opportunities in high-traffic areas abound as large retail stores across the country continue to close. Families taking care of their elderly relatives at home need a break. For about $12 an hour, their loved ones can spend time in a place where they will be taken care of in a loving environment, Ross says. Repurposing old buildings helps communities as well as the seniors, including those with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia, he says. Senior Helpers provides activity leaders for Town Square “storefronts,” including replicas of diners, movie theaters, service stations, newsstands, and more.

One Question
Troy Aikman, I encourage kids to play all sports. I see them being asked to pick a primary sport and focus on that at a young age, and I don’t really see the benefits in that. Had I focused on one sport at the age these kids are today, I never would have played football. I almost gave it up my freshman year of high school to just play basketball and baseball because I thought I wanted to focus more on my baseball career. I think a lot of the specialization in club sports has been more of a benefit for the coaches than it has been for the players. What I see is kids who, at a very young age, start club sports, and by the time they get to high school, they’re totally burned out. I believe the more sports the better. On Feb. 2, catch the former quarterback on FOX’s broadcast of the Super Bowl.
