For this assignment, I learned how great it can be to meet your hero. I have followed Cristina Mittermeier’s work for years, and I’m a big admirer of SeaLegacy. I got my first camera when I was 13 years old, and wherever I travelled, it came too. Taking pictures was a part of every trip, and lugging around my Pentax K1000 helped me form my identity as a traveller. I even learned to develop my own film so I could have control over how the images looked once printed (yeah, things were a little more involved before Instagram filters).

That camera didn’t just capture images of my journeys – it also opened up conversations with interesting strangers and offered a window into their lives. As well, my Pentax made me very aware of the places I was passing through. Film was expensive to buy and develop and so I had to think hard about what to photograph. Looking for the right frame, the right moment, the right trophies to bring home from my voyage, I think I saw much more of the world than if I had just been walking through it. Years later, I look at images I captured and I’m transported to moments and people I hadn’t remembered in years.

I now shoot mainly with my iPhone, and my Instagram feed has taken the place of my photo albums (remember those?). While the technology has changed and I can be a little more freewheeling, taking pictures remains my favourite thing to do when I travel.

As we explore in this issue, travelling with a camera is a recipe for incredible storytelling. It allows us to see the planet through many lenses, and to gain rich new perspectives and tools that will hopefully inspire others to travel themselves and bring back their own visual souvenirs. J’ai eu mon premier appareil photo à 13 ans ; partout où j’allais, il suivait. À chaque voyage ses photos, et trimballer mon Pentax K1000 a contribué à forger mon identité de voyageuse. J’ai même appris à développer ma pellicule pour rester maître du look de mes photos imprimées (oui, les choses étaient un peu plus complexes avant les filtres Instagram).

Au-delà de la capture d’images témoins de mes périples, mon appareil m’a permis d’engager des conversations et de m’ouvrir à la vie d’étrangers intéressants. De plus, mon Pentax m’a sensibilisée aux lieux que je traversais. L’achat et le développement des films étant coûteux, je sélectionnais soigneusement mes sujets. À chercher le bon cadrage, le moment idéal, les clichés les plus pertinents de chaque voyage, je crois avoir saisi le monde mieux que j’aurais pu le faire en m’y baladant simplement. Aujourd’hui, regarder les photos que j’ai prises à l’époque me ramène à des moments et à des gens que j’avais oubliés depuis longtemps. À présent, je prends la plupart de mes photos avec mon iPhone, et mon fil Instagram a remplacé mes albums (vous vous souvenez de ça?). Prendre des photos reste mon activité de voyage préférée à l’heure où les nouvelles technologies me permettent une plus grande latitude.

Comme on l’illustre dans ce numéro, voyager avec un appareil photo permet de raconter d’incroyables histoires, qui nous permettent de voir le monde sous plusieurs angles, en offrant des perspectives inédites et de nouveaux outils qui, idéalement, nous pousseront nous-mêmes à voyager et à rapporter nos propres images souvenirs. Air Canada’s international expansion and transformation into a global carrier over the last decade is well known and has served to define us. Less widely known, however, is how these achievements are rooted in our success closer to home, in the world’s largest aviation market, the United States.

It has been 25 years since the Canada–U.S. Open Skies Agreement began to fundamentally reshape transborder air services through deregulation.

Since then, Air Canada has gone from flying to eight U.S. cities to 54 last month. Today, we are the foreign airline with the most services to the United States.

To compete with much larger American carriers, we were determined to become a market leader in customer service, among other things, deploying our premium Signature Service on transcontinental flights and earning Skytrax’s Best Airline in North America award for eight of the past 10 years. And we continue to grow selectively, with five new routes starting this spring and summer.

Two of these services, Montreal–Seattle and Toronto–San Jose, are the first new routes being operated with our recently acquired Airbus A220.

Just as the revolutionary Canadair Regional Jet let us open routes to the United States a quarter century ago, the A220 is another Canadian-designed technical marvel whose size and range hold potential for more transborder city pairs, including very long transcontinental flights.

Our deep American footprint underpins our international strategy. With so much global air travel originating and ending in the United States, we have positioned our global gateways in Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal as connection points for American and other international traffic. These international travellers help fill our aircraft to sustain routes that Canadian traffic alone could not support.

As an example, Toronto, despite being the 57th-largest metropolitan area in the world, boasts the sixth most internationally connected airport.

And the story is largely the same in Montreal and Vancouver. The economic activity, jobs and tourism flowing from this are enormous, not to mention giving Canadians a world of non-stop travel options from our hubs.

Perched on the rocky shoreline at Lands End park, near the entrance to San Francisco Bay, is a working walk-in camera that captures the shimmering sea and seals sunbathing on outlying rocks. A centuries-old innovation many credit to Leonardo da Vinci, this particular camera obscura was built in 1946 as part of the Playland amusement park (it’s now an official landmark on the National Register of Historic Places).

A convex lens atop the Giant Camera catches light reflected by a corresponding mirror, then projects a live 360-degree image of the view outside onto a tabletop in the dark room. Visit just before sunset for a spectacular show – since the image is magnified by seven, you may see solar flares or even witness the green-flash phenomenon. — Sur la rive rocheuse du parc Lands End, juste à l’embouchure de la baie de San Francisco, se trouve une chambre noire (dont l’invention remonterait à Léonard de Vinci) à taille humaine qui permet d’admirer le miroitement de l’océan et les otaries lézardant sur les rochers. Cameras click non-stop atop the Eiffel Tower, but the photogenic cityscape isn’t the only sight worth snapping. Sharp eyes might spot a little blue alien that was affixed to the monument last year – it’s just one of 1,437 pieces of Invader art that has camera-phone-toting fans scouting the city to add to their digital-art collections.

For more than two decades Invader, the anonymous Parisian street artist, has plastered walls and structures with his signature ceramictiled mosaics, which evoke the pixelated esthetic of Japanese arcade classic Space Invaders. In 2014, he launched a free FlashInvaders app – and a modern scavenger hunt began. The retro-style mosaics (3,861 and counting) have popped up in 79 cities worldwide, and fittingly, you can even find them in outer space on the International Space Station.

Each artwork is meticulously catalogued on the official website, space-invaders.com, but the exact addresses are kept secret. Sleuthing for locations has become something of a competitive sport among locals and travellers alike – each Invader you “flash” (that is, photograph with the app) earns anywhere from 10 to 100 points. The current top score: over 81,000, racked up by a player who has hunted down 2,700-plus Invaders.

“I like to think of FlashInvaders as the original Pokémon Go, but instead of looking at a screen, you have to look up, down and all around a city,” says Anne Ditmeyer, a Paris-based creative consultant and the blogger behind Prêt à Voyager, who has tracked down more than 530 Invaders to date. She’s walked for hours in the quest for a flash, and once day-tripped to Versailles expressly for Invader hunting – the search taking her beyond the typical tourist attractions. “I discovered so many great places I would have totally missed had I not been searching for Invaders.”

While Paris still boasts the highest number of Invader art installations, the latest invasion took over an entire island with 58 mosaics popping up on Djerba in Tunisia last year. Addictive gameplay and appreciation for street art aside, viewing a destination with eyes wide open is the true win, Ditmeyer says. “Even when I don’t see an Invader to photograph, I inevitably notice some other detail that I’ve never seen before.” 

Depuis plus de 20 ans, l’artiste parisien Invader orne murs et structures de ses emblématiques mosaïques en céramique, qui rappellent le look pixelisé du jeu d’arcade japonais Space Invaders.

En 2014, il lançait l’appli gratuite FlashInvaders… et par la même occasion, une chasse au trésor moderne. Ses mosaïques d’allure rétro (3861 et plus) sont apparues dans 79 villes dans le monde ; il y en a même une en orbite sur la Station spatiale internationale, comme il se doit.

Les œuvres sont soigneusement cataloguées sur le site space-invaders.com, mais leur emplacement exact est tenu secret. Les repérer est devenu une sorte de compétition des gens du coin et des voyageurs ; chaque mosaïque qu’on « flashe» (qu’on photographie avec l’appli) vaut entre 10 et 100 points. Le meilleur score actuel, plus de 81 000 points, est celui d’un utilisateur qui a repéré plus de 2700 Invaders. « Je considère FlashInvaders comme le premier Pokémon Go, mais on ne regarde pas un écran, on explore une ville dans tous ses recoins », explique Anne Ditmeyer, la consultante créative et blogueuse établie à Paris de Prêt à Voyager, qui a repéré plus de 530 Invaders. It has earned the title ‘polar bear capital of the world’ because the area lies within the migration path of a healthy population of polar bears. Des années auparavant, dans une autre partie du monde, une fille luttait pour survivre. Quand Grace Acan a été enlevée, elle n’avait que le chandail bleu de son école pour lui donner de la force. Depuis, elle et une autre captive, Evelyn Amony, sont passées du mariage forcé et de l’esclavage à la guérison et à la recherche

de la justice pour elles-mêmes et d’autres personnes enlevées par l’Armée de résistance du Seigneur en Ouganda.

Les histoires de ces jeunes femmes courageuses sont parmi les milliers qui sont présentées au Musée canadien pour les droits de la personne, à Winnipeg.

Ce Torontois décrit la vie du rappeur (et l’univers qui s’est développé tout autour) depuis huit ans, souvent en noir et blanc, style qui le caractérise. Mais il n’est pas que le photographe de Drake ; c’est un visualiste, cinéaste, scénariste et producteur qui s’adonne à faire des photos artistiques du rappeur dans les coulisses, en plein spectacle et aux côtés de noms célèbres d’Adele à Jay-Z. If you’ve scrolled by a photo of Drake on Instagram or watched one of his recent music videos, including February’s “When To Say When & Chicago Freestyle,” then you’ve likely seen Theo Skudra’s work. The Toronto native has been documenting the rapper – and the world that has developed around him – for the past eight years, often in his signature black and white style.

But he’s not just Drake’s photographer: Skudra is a visual artist, filmmaker, writer and producer who also happens to take album-art-worthy snaps of the rapper backstage, mid-performance and alongside everyone from Adele to Jay-Z. We caught up with Skudra to talk about the nostalgia of film, the realities of tour life and how he gets the perfect shots of Champagne Papi.

year, I’ve been shooting on 16 mm, and there’s something about the esthetic. Film reacts to light in a way I connect with – when I see the way those blown-out highlights look in Casino, or the sky during magic hour in Days of Heaven, or how vivid Larry Towell’s black-and-white photojournalism is, I think, “That’s what I want.” It’s almost like every shot becomes instantly classic and nostalgic.—Ça peut avoir

Theo Skudra: My dad was a photographer, so when I was growing up there were cameras everywhere and his photos were on the walls. And my mom was an avid art and photography fan. I started to take it seriously on family vacations.

When did you meet Drake?

I was working on films with some mutual friends who were actors on Degrassi. One day, they asked me if I wanted to come to a rehearsal that Drake was having. This was before Take Care came out. I was a huge fan, so walking into that rehearsal space was surreal. I didn’t really start working with him until the set of “Marvins Room.”—Je travaillais

How do you know when you have the perfect shot?

I try to capture heightened moments. Maybe Drake’s on stage and there’s a leap or a blast, or a fan loses their mind at just the right second. I find myself clicking whenever it feels like the top spike in the beat – and gravitating toward those shots in the edit. And then the opposite end of that is looking for somebody who’s in their own private moment, especially when you’re in a busy environment. Those down moments are interesting, maybe because they’re rare or because the person is less aware of the camera.—J’essaie

What do you love about shooting on film?

Part of it might be my history with it and the nostalgia of how film operates. But I also love the look of it. For the last

And how did that come about?

I was a digital-image technician for that video, so I would receive all the memory cards and dump them onto hard drives. But I also brought my camera to set. The first photo I took of Drake, I snuck while he was in a dark corner. The director kind of snapped at me and said, “You can’t be taking this photo.” Then Drake appeared and was like, “What are you talking about? It’s all good. Let him do what he wants.” And then he turned to me and said, “Just send that to me after.” He used that first photo as the single art for “Trust Issues.” After that, I kept getting asked to come out for music videos, or events, or whatever he was doing. I was on the set of “Headlines” when Drake asked me if I wanted to come on tour. If we go to Turks and Caicos, I’m packing white tees and some bathing suits, but I don’t know if we’re going to wind up in London the next week and I’m going to need a raincoat. Since you’re on the road a lot, how would you describe your relationship with Toronto?

Toronto is always going to be my favourite place on earth.

It’s home, regardless of where we go, but it’s a place that I see less and less of. We’re back and forth between L.A. and Toronto most months of the year, and then touring three, four, five months at a time. Le Montréal d’un directeur de création en RV Paul Raphaël, co-founder of the immersive-entertainment company Felix & Paul Studios, takes us to his favourite spots for quick hits of caffeine and inspiration in Old Montreal.—Paul Raphaël, cofondateur du studio de divertissement

immersif Felix & Paul Studios, nous fait faire le tour de cinq de ses cafés et sources d’inspirations préférés du Vieux-Montréal.

I met my business partner Félix Lajeunesse in film school at Concordia University and, after graduating, we built a 360-degree virtual-reality camera to create immersive viewing experiences. In 2014, we began working on projects like a VR tie-in for Jean-Marc Vallée’s film Wild and a tour of the White House with President Obama and Michelle Obama. Our offices are close to downtown, but we’re on a small street just a few blocks away from the St. Lawrence River – it’s both a quiet place and one where we’re surrounded by art. 1- Société des Arts Technologiques (SAT) is great for checking out what other people in the innovative entertainment industry are doing. I’ve been coming here for years to catch experimental art performances and immersive concerts under the 18-metre-wide dome. 2- Philippe Dubuc moved a couple blocks away, but the menswear designer used to have a store across the street from us. I’d drop in to pick up black pants and shirts, which are a go-to for me. However, convenience has its downsides: Félix and I once showed up to an event wearing the same suit.

3- Café Balance functions as my one-stop coffee shop. I buy their beans and oat milk to bring home, and I’ll pop in to grab a latte to go or stick around for a casual meeting. Their barista Sam is friendly and plays music that makes you feel sunny regardless of the season. 4- Centre Phi is a multimedia cultural space that we have a long-standing connection to: Its founder Phoebe Greenberg is one of our investors, and we showcased our first project here (an instudio shoot of Patrick Watson’s song “Strangers”). The programming is full of interesting exhibits, like last summer’s This Light Never Goes Out: Political Cartoons by Jim Carrey. 5- Marusan has some of the best udon and pork katsu in town, so I regularly line up. Our team often has meetings over lunch hour, and it’s not unusual to see a few people around the table with takeout boxes from this speedy Japanese counter. 

Mais la commodité a ses inconvénients : Félix et moi, on s’est déjà présentés à un événement avec le même complet. 3- Le Café Balance est mon café de prédilection. C’est où j’achète mon café en grains et mon lait d’avoine pour la maison, où je débarque prendre un latte pour emporter et où je tiens des réunions impromptues. Sam, le barista, est cool et met de la musique qui rend de bonne humeur, peu importe la température. 4- Le Centre Phi est un pôle culturel multimédia avec lequel on a des liens de longue date : sa fondatrice, Phoebe Greenberg, est une de nos investisseurs, et on y a présenté notre premier projet (un tournage en studio de la chanson Strangers, de Patrick Watson). Lucha libre is the oldest wrestling federation in the world, second only to soccer in popularity and its ability to spark exuberant displays of patriotic pride. As the sun sets on the Arena Coliseo in Mexico City, locals and tourists alike make their way to the home of professional lucha libre. The crowd blows horns, drinks beer from paper cups and tries to flag down the popcorn vendor. The stadium is cool, but there’s a rising warmth generated by too many bodies in one space.

It’s Saturday fight night featuring the luchadoras: powerful masked female fighters competing for a place in an old-school boys’ club. Lights flash, spectators whistle and an anthem blares over the speakers.

“Sanely,” a 37-year-old third-generation fighter (with a degree in psychology) strides down the catwalk in kneehigh patent-leather boots, a black trench with shiny scales on the arms, blue and black shorts and matching sports bra. Her mask is a combination of the “S” from her name and a tribute to her father, wrestling legend “Mano Negra.” A ripple of excitement passes through the crowd as she climbs into the ring.

Lucha libre is considered the most popular sport in the country after soccer. The matches are defined by elaborate masks steeped in lore and family tradition, flamboyant stage personas with soap-opera storylines, crazy aerial flips and no shortage of Spandex – and attending them is a way to experience Mexican culture that can’t be found in a museum or historic church.

Lucha libre is believed to have originated over 100 years ago at the beginning of Mexico’s social revolution as a public distraction from political unrest. Women competed professionally until the 1950s, but then were barred from fighting in the country’s capital. Seen as immoral outliers of Mexico’s cultural expectation of femininity, female fighters were forced to travel to provincial towns or outside of the country if they wanted to compete (the ban was lifted in 1986).

It’s the third fight of the night in the Arena Coliseo and Sanely motions to the crowd to cheer. Though she was born into a family of luchadores, her father refused to train her because of the challenges and physical risks he knew she’d face. “My father was the biggest obstacle,” she says. “So, I studied like every obedient daughter, handed him my degree and said: ‘Now I can do what I want.’” Her job as a psychologist gave her the opportunity to train until she made her debut four years ago.

Today, Sanely shatters barriers every time she steps into the ring, and her combination of strength and femininity goes beyond entertainment: It’s become a movement.

The referee makes a show of checking her boots for hidden weapons, but Sanely is a técnica (meaning she follows the rules) and her style of fighting is based on technique, not cheating. Some of the luchadoras are rudas (fighters who break the rules) and are trickier

Ce samedi soir de lutte met en vedette les luchadoras : de menaçantes lutteuses masquées qui rivalisent pour se tailler une place dans un bon vieux boys’ club. Les lumières clignotent, les spectateurs sifflent, les haut-parleurs beuglent un hymne. Sanely, 37 ans, lutteuse de troisième génération (et diplômée en psychologie), traverse la passerelle : bottes en cuir verni aux genoux, trench noir aux manches à écailles luisantes, short bleu et noir et soutien-gorge sport assorti. Son masque rappelle le S de son nom et rend hommage à son père, le légendaire lutteur Mano Negra . Un murmure d’excitation parcourt la foule quand la lutteuse monte sur le ring.

Au Mexique, la lucha libre est considérée comme le deuxième sport le plus populaire, après le foot. Elle se distingue par ses masques ouvrés imprégnés de traditions (familiales et autres), ses personnages flamboyants aux canevas de téléromans, ses sauts déments et son Spandex à gogo ; ce sport est une immersion dans la culture mexicaine qui n’a pas d’égal au musée ou dans une église historique. La lucha libre aurait débuté il y a plus d’un siècle, à l’aube de la révolution mexicaine, pour distraire le peuple de l’agitation politique. Les lutteuses professionnelles ont eu droit de cité jusqu’aux années 1950, quand on les a interdites dans la capitale. Perçues comme des figures immorales en marge du modèle mexicain de la féminité, elles ont alors été forcées d’aller lutter en province ou à l’étranger (l’interdiction a été levée en 1986).

C’est le troisième combat de la soirée à l’Arena Coliseo et Sanely fait signe à la foule de l’encourager. Même si elle est née dans une famille de luchadores, son père a refusé de l’entraîner, car il savait quelles épreuves et quels risques physiques l’attendaient. « Mon père a été mon plus grand obstacle, dit-elle. J’ai donc fait mes études en fille obéissante, puis lui ai tendu mon diplôme en disant : “Maintenant, je peux faire ce que je veux.” » Son boulot de psychologue lui a permis de s’entraîner jusqu’à ses débuts, il y a quatre ans. À présent, Sanely brise des barrières chaque fois qu’elle met le pied dans un ring. Son mariage de force et de féminité va au-delà du divertissement : c’est devenu un mouvement social.

L’arbitre fait mine de vérifier s’il n’y a pas d’armes dans ses bottes, mais Sanely est une técnica (c’est-à-dire qu’elle respecte les règles), et son style est basé sur la technique, pas la tricherie. D’autres luchadoras sont des rudas (elles enfreignent les règles), plus agressives et sournoises. On

and more aggressive in their tactics. It sounds like the age-old struggle between good and evil, but it’s more nuanced and stylized than that. The audience, taunting the rudas and cheering on the técnicas, shouts unsolicited advice from the front row. “Walking down the catwalk is something you can’t imagine,” Sanely says.

“The lights, the people. It’s addictive.”

The next round is about to begin. “Dalys la Caribeña” enters the ring in a flood of spotlights, waving to a young fan who is shouting her name. The grandmother of five, and current Universal Amazons Champion, is wrestling royalty: She’s the daughter of a Panamanian wrestling promoter, the wife and sister of professional wrestlers and the mother of two daughters who are in Olympicstyle wrestling training. “I’m not a normal grandma,” she says. Luchadoras like Dalys are inspiring more and more young women to pursue their dreams of making a living in the ring, and they need all the support they can get. Female fighters are rarely ever accepted as arena headliners, and work twice as hard to be seen as more than eye candy in a macho environment where it’s not uncommon to be told to go back to the kitchen. Dalys, and others like her, are agents of change, battling for justice as role models. “When you become a luchadora, you have to choose a godmother to baptize you,” she says. “I have a new generation of fighters who are all my goddaughters, and I’m happy to inspire them. They know what it cost me to get to where I am.”

As the army of professional luchadoras grows in Mexico City, so does a wave of feminist activism.

Informally, women have been organizing and speaking out for years, but the movement is becoming more visible, from the streets and the workplace to the wrestling arena. Wrestling’s machismo backstage politics are still alive, but not to the extent they once were. Although women still face criticism for pursuing a “masculine” sport, they aren’t sabotaged the way they were previously by their male peers (who sometimes glued their boots to the floor before a match). “There used to be more barriers for women, and it was difficult to earn the respect of many male colleagues. My dressing room was a bathroom,” recalls “Lady Apache,” a 49-year-old recurring champion. But to be a true luchadora is to fight in every aspect of life. “As someone who dares to do things differently, I know I will always shine,” she says.

Lady Apache fought her first amateur fight before the ban was lifted. She wasn’t paid – she was just excited for the opportunity to fight. Her early years were filled with matches that took place in quiet neighbourhoods, markets and churches as she struggled to be recognized on the same level as men. Her long and successful career as

Les luchadoras comme Dalys inspirent de plus en plus de jeunes femmes qui rêvent de gagner leur vie dans le ring ; elles ont besoin qu’on les appuie. Les lutteuses, rarement acceptées comme têtes d’affiche dans les arénas, travaillent deux fois plus fort pour être plus que de simples régals pour les yeux dans un environnement machiste où il n’est pas rare qu’on leur crie de retourner à leurs fourneaux. Dalys et ses consœurs sont des agents de changement ; elles se battent pour la justice et font figure de modèles. « Quand on devient luchadora, il faut choisir une marraine qui vous baptise, raconte Dalys. Je sers moimême de marraine à une nouvelle génération de lutteuses, et je me réjouis de les inspirer. Elles savent ce qu’il m’en a coûté pour arriver où je suis. » Avec la croissance du régiment de luchadoras professionnelles de Mexico vient une montée de la vague d’activisme féministe. Officieusement, les femmes s’organisent et se font entendre depuis des années, mais le mouvement gagne à présent en visibilité, des rues et milieux de travail aux arènes de lutte. Le machisme est toujours présent dans les coulisses de la lutte, mais moins qu’avant. Même si les lutteuses sont encore pointées du doigt parce qu’elles pratiquent un sport « d’homme », leurs collègues masculins ne sont plus aussi malveillants envers elles (certaines trouvaient leurs bottes collées au sol avant un combat). « Avant, il y avait plus d’obstacles pour les femmes, et c’était difficile de mériter le respect de bien des lutteurs. J’avais ma loge dans les toilettes », relate Lady Apache, 49 ans et plusieurs fois championne. Mais une vraie luchadora se bat sur tous les plans. « Si on ose faire les choses différemment, on va toujours irradier », ajoute-t-elle.

Lady Apache a livré son premier combat amateur avant la levée de l’interdiction. Elle n’a pas été payée ; elle était simplement emballée de pouvoir lutter. Les combats de ses premières années ont eu lieu dans des quartiers excentrés, des marchés, des églises, quand elle luttait pour être reconnue au même titre qu’un homme. Sa longue et

a luchadora has allowed her to travel the world, but the contact sport has taken a toll on her personal life. When you’re a fighter, you have to give 100 percent, whether you’re injured or a family member has just died – the public doesn’t know (or care) if you are sick or suffering. “Wrestling is something that really takes away many things. As much as it gives, it also takes away,” she says.

“Krazy Star,” a 26-year-old luchadora, travels two hours to the city to train at a well-known luchador gym. “After my mother said no, it took me about a year to convince her.” Her wrestling persona channels “la Reina de Los Muertos” (the Queen of the Dead), a fighter who went against the tide, against her family, against her male colleagues – against everything – to become a luchadora. Five years ago, Krazy Star was coming home from a fighting event on the outskirts of Mexico City and found herself in a situation where she had to defend herself. Being a luchadora may have saved her life. “I don’t try to talk like Krazy Star. We are the same. It’s my fear, my courage, my strength and my weakness. I learn from these two parts of me.”

The Saturday-night crowd chants loudly as luchadoras are tossed from the ring, fly over ropes and launch themselves face-first into a series of swift kicks.

Their elaborate, mysterious masks are the most valuable things they possess: The masks are more than a way to identify each fighter, they are the essence of the wrestler’s identity. Luchadores are never seen without their masks, and even wear them when exiting the arena after a fight. “Black Fury,” a 24-year-old luchadora, explains that her personality is her wrestling persona; the menacing combination of black-on-black leather represents the tenacious, forceful person behind the mask. “I have a very strong personality. And sometimes, I’m a little aggressive,” she says. “It doesn’t matter that the world says we are the weaker sex. We can achieve anything we set out to do. I want to be an inspiration so that at some point in my career, women may want to be like me.”

Noisemakers and the smell of fried snacks fill the air. Sanely scans the crowd: Hundreds of fans are wearing their favourite fighters’ masks, illuminated by the flashing lights. She soaks up the last moments of the love-hate relationship with the audience. Her one goal in life is to fight in the “cathedral of lucha libre.” “If you haven’t fought in the Arena México, they say you were never really a fighter,” she says. As she exits the ring, Arena Coliseo fills with music signalling the next fight – a male luchador headliner – and a final roar from Sanely’s ecstatic young fans: the next generation of female fighters. 

Krazy Star, luchadora de 26 ans, fait deux heures de route pour s’entraîner dans un gym réputé de lucha libre. « Quand ma mère m’a dit non, il m’a fallu environ un an pour la convaincre. » Dans l’arène, elle incarne la reine des morts, une lutteuse qui a navigué à contre-courant, qui s’est opposée à sa famille, à ses collègues masculins, à tout, afin de se réaliser comme luchadora. Il y a cinq ans, elle revenait d’une soirée de lutte aux abords de Mexico quand elle s’est retrouvée dans une situation où elle a dû se défendre. Être luchadora lui a peut-être sauvé la vie. « Krazy Star, ce n’est pas un rôle que je joue, dit-elle. Elle et moi sommes la même personne. Elle est ma peur, mon courage, ma force et ma faiblesse. J’apprends de ces deux facettes de ma personnalité. » Le public du samedi soir scande des slogans quand les luchadoras se font éjecter du ring, s’élancent depuis les cordes et se jettent tête première dans une série de coups de pied agiles. Leurs masques mystérieux sont leur bien le plus précieux ; ils ne servent pas qu’à identifier chaque lutteur, ils sont l’essence même de leur identité. Un luchador ne se montre jamais sans son masque, il le porte même au sortir de l’aréna après un combat.

Black Fury, une luchadora de 24 ans, explique qu’elle ne fait qu’un avec son personnage : l’aspect menaçant du cuir noir ton sur ton représente la femme tenace et déterminée derrière le masque. « J’ai une très forte personnalité. Et il m’arrive d’être un peu agressive, admet-elle.

Qu’importe qu’on passe pour le sexe faible. Nous pouvons réaliser tout ce que nous voulons. Je veux être une source d’inspiration afin qu’un jour, d’autres femmes veuillent m’imiter. » Le bruit des crécelles et des trompes et l’odeur de friture emplissent l’air. Sanely scrute la foule : dans les lumières qui clignotent, des centaines de fans portent le masque de leur lutteuse préférée. Elle savoure les derniers instants de cette relation d’amour-haine avec le public. Son but dans la vie est de se battre dans la « cathédrale de la lucha libre ». « Si vous n’avez jamais lutté à l’Arena México, on dit que vous n’avez jamais vraiment livré de combat », dit-elle. À sa sortie du ring, l’Arena Coliseo se remplit d’une musique qui annonce le prochain combat (celui d’un luchador en tête d’affiche) et, une dernière fois, de la clameur des jeunes partisanes exaltées de Sanely… la prochaine génération de lutteuses. 

He set off on a road trip across the lower continent, creating a visual diary of his 4,800-kilometre voyage from Buenos Aires to Tierra del Fuego, at the ends of the Earth.

Along route 43, just south of Comodoro Rivadavia, Argentina, are vast plains of arid steppe. “Part of the allure of Patagonia is that the landscape is always transitioning, from the massive plains with clouds blotting the landscape to hills of different colours. If you visit the Louvre without taking a picture of the Mona Lisa, did you really see it? Few have resisted the urge to join the pack of paparazzi angling for a shot of Da Vinci’s mysterious muse – even Beyoncé snapped one for the ’gram. But after our cameras have captured the painting, how well do we remember that enigmatic smile? What colour, even, are La Gioconda’s eyes?

In search of the answer, Linda Henkel, professor of psychology at Fairfield University in Connecticut, embarked on a simple experiment. During a guided tour of the school’s Bellarmine Museum of Art, participants were told to observe some objects while photographing others. The next day, Henkel tested their memories with

free-recall, name- and photo-recognition exercises. The results were clear – or hazy, rather: People remembered less about the art pieces that they’d photographed.

This photo-taking memory impairment isn’t limited to art galleries. “I think we do this in a variety of places, especially when we’re sightseeing,” says Henkel. From window-seat snapshots to Snapchats of windmills, “It’s almost like we’re collecting the photos as trophies of our experiences,” she says. Some of us can sum up our holiday conquests with the phrase “Veni, vidi, say cheese.” I came, I saw, I captured.

But not everyone is a point-and-shoot-everything voyager. “There are circumstances where taking photos can benefit your memory,” Henkel says. She points to another study by researchers that conducted a similar experiment, but instead of telling participants what to photograph, they let them decide. This freedom of choice actually enhanced the visual memory of the photographers.

It may all come down to intents and purposes. “My theory is that the effect of taking photos depends on your goals when you take them,” says Julie Soares, a researcher at the University of California, Santa Cruz’s Memory Lab. In a study to be published later this year, Soares found that people who take photos as visual souvenirs are more likely to associate vivid memories with them compared to photos they take solely for social media.

Her advice to trigger-happy travellers? “Take photos of stuff that you’ll want to look at later.” And the sooner you revisit and reflect upon them, the better your longterm memories of the experience will be, Henkel adds. 

Tout serait question d’intention. « Ma théorie, c’est que l’effet de la prise de photos dépend de l’intention derrière », dit Julie Soares, chercheuse au Memory Lab de l’université de Californie à Santa Cruz. “Back when it cost money to buy film and get it developed (and you only had 24 shots on a roll), photography was more precious,” says Linda Henkel. As a result, we were more selective about what we took photos of. I see the tail spotters while I am taxiing for takeoff or making my final approach. They watch from outside the airport’s fenced perimeter or sometimes from hangouts known in the community – places like the top floor of the parking lot in San Diego (SAN), at the gas station by runway 23 at Toronto Pearson (YYZ) and at the Los Angeles (LAX) In-N-Out Burger. In St. Maarten, they watch in their swimwear from the airport-adjacent Maho Beach.

Most just come to observe, but others snap pictures, soon to be uploaded to online spotting groups frequented by a global community of aircraft lovers. These folks know the airline schedules, specific fleet identification numbers (FIN) or registrations, where the airplanes originated and their next destination – some are even tuned into air traffic control radio

For the uninitiated, the sheer closeness of the planes, the sound and feel of the engine thrust and the smell of aviation cologne – jet fuel exhaust – can be exhilarating. I’ve been known to give tail spotters a wave and if very young spotters are present I throw in a huge smile.

One great way to feed a tail-spotting hobby is to work for an airline. Erik Ritterbach, an Air Canada cargo manager in Frankfurt, has literally travelled the world capturing FIN numbers. He even visits aircraft graveyards to collect unique aircraft poses.

And Air Canada’s photographer, Brian Losito, has captured photos of our fleet for 33 years. When we introduce a new aircraft, he has the lucky job of snapping pics and filming while airborne, from a small jet equipped with special cameras. 

Travailler pour un transporteur aérien permet d’alimenter cette forme de loisir. Il a même visité des cimetières d’avions pour y prendre des clichés uniques. Et depuis 33 ans, Brian Losito s’affaire à photographier notre flotte pour le compte d’Air Canada. Il a le plaisir d’immortaliser en vol les nouveaux appareils mis en service (photos et vidéos),

Considering this month’s Air Canada enRoute theme, I asked myself a question, putting a travel spin on the proverbial tree-falling-in-a-forest conundrum: If you go on a trip and don’t take any photos, did it even happen? Photographs operate as cultural currency in the Instagram age, but filmmaking acts as a window into different worlds. There is no better example on board Air Canada this month than what takes place a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker sees J.J. Abrams once again helm the storied franchise, drawing it to a dramatic close. For a darker take on sci-fi, Damon Lindelof’s Watchmen uses the comic’s source material as a lens to view a troubled America and its superheroes. For a step back in time (but not mindset), I recommend Greta Gerwig’s modern, feminist Little Women – if it’s nostalgia you’re after, watch the 1994 version (also on board this month). Let Air Canada take you to worlds beyond our own.

Nous avons investi énormément dans le renouvellement de notre parc aérien avec des avions plus écoénergétiques et silencieux. Nous travaillons à réduire la consommation de carburant en vol, et surveillons les émissions de GES de nos installations et de notre matériel roulant.

J'examine tout : de l’usage de carburant aviation durable jusqu’à la réglementation de compensation carbone axée sur le marché… En rédigeant des rapports sur ces mesures, je vois ce qui fonctionne ou non. Ma tâche consiste à trouver des solutions adaptées à chaque secteur.

Le Canada est vaste et l’enjeu de la réduction des émissions varie selon les provinces. Pour les véhicules de certaines de nos escales, un carburant à faible teneur en carbone ou une source d’énergie renouvelable produisent un bilan carbone moindre que l’alimentation électrique. La pérennité écologique exige un effort collectif. Nous offrons à nos clients et partenaires des moyens de réduire leur empreinte, ce que j’estime très gratifiant.

The concept that underlies all our environmental initiatives at Air Canada is to leave less and do more for the community. We’re constantly reviewing our targets to assess how far we’ve come and what improvements we can continue to make.

We’ve invested heavily in a fleet renewal with more fuel-efficient and quieter aircraft; we run a team dedicated to reducing overall fuel consumption in the air; and we’re monitoring greenhouse gas emissions of all our facilities and mobile equipment on the ground as well.

I overview it all – from the sustainable aviation fuel we use to carbon market-based offset regulations. By writing reports on these different measures, I get to actively see what’s working and what’s not. My job is really about finding and tailoring solutions to each area.

Canada is a big country so carbon reduction looks different in every province. For example, in some of our facilities, lowcarbon fuel or renewable energy sources produce a smaller greenhouse gas footprint than the use of electric vehicles. At the end of the day, environmental sustainability is a group effort. As an airline we provide our customers and partners with ways where they can reduce their footprint – that is particularly rewarding.
