CANADIAN CONDUCTOR MAESTRO KEN HSIEH Maestro Ken Hsieh, an internationally renowned award-winning Canadian Conductor, is based in Vancouver with the Vancouver Metropolitan Orchestra. He has been a guest conductor with orchestras in Europe, Asia, and the Americas. In Japan, Maestro Hsieh works closely with many orchestras such as Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, Hiroshima Symphony Orchestra, Kyoto Symphony Orchestra, New Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestra Ensemble Kanazawa, Osaka Century Orchestra, Gunma Symphony Orchestra, Sendai Philharmonic Orchestra, Hyogo Performing Arts Centre Orchestra, and more.

CANADIAN GOLD MEDALIST JEAN-LUC BRASSARD Jean-Luc Brassard joined the Canadian National Freestyle Ski team at the age of 17 and enjoyed a brilliant 12-year career. During that time he became a four-time Olympian and won the Olympic gold at Lillehammer 1994 in the men’s moguls event of freestyle skiing. He loves skiing in Japan and does so frequently, returning there to enjoy the powder of the slopes such as Niseko.

RUGBY CANADA’S ANDREW COE Talented, fast-paced and fearless, Andrew plays as a fullback, representing Canada internationally. He participated in Rugby World Cup 2019 which was held in Japan for the first time and scored a TRY for Canada against Italy. He is currently competing for Canada through our National Men’s 7's program on Sevens Series, in preparation for the Tokyo 2021 Olympics.

RUGBY CANADA'S JULIA GREENSHIELDS Julia is passionate on and off the field. Rugby 7's - senior women, who previously participated in tournaments in Japan. Her experience there made such an impact, and she wants to share that with everyone. Ms. Greenshields will also competing for a spot on the Canadian Olympic 7's team. Julia is the fourth Canadian to reach 30 World Rugby Sevens Series events.

As a kid growing up in southern Ontario, it didn’t matter how low the mercury dipped because hiding out indoors was never an option. My parents were into winter – big time. The season started with a trip to the local second-hand skate shop, where my brothers and I turned in last year’s scuffed models for the nearly as-good-as-new next size up. After the first respectable snowfall, my father spent a solid hour or two waxing our cross-country skis. Then, the entire family headed off into the woods, thermoses of hot chocolate safely stowed in the station wagon (yes, we were that cliché) for the drive home. We also, once, went on a downhill ski holiday in Vermont. I have no recollection of it at all, but my mother likes to remind me that the reason it was a one-time thing was because I cried on the chairlift and refused to ski down the hill. (In my defence, I was five.) Well, I’m not crying now. In fact, this pandemic year in particular I’m grateful for having learned to appreciate all that a Canadian winter has to offer. There are roughly 300 ski resorts in Canada, which is also home to 2 million frequently frozen lakes, 5,000 outdoor rinks and a generous smattering of winter festivals and Nordic spas. Plus, although it originated in Germany, Canada is the largest producer of icewine ( just for the record). Let’s face it, we do winter well. And I plan to embrace it more than ever. Despite my rough start, I’m now an enthusiastic, if not particularly talented, downhill skier. I also love a long snowshoe or a forest skating trail and, when it comes to toboggan runs, the steeper the better. Most of all, I’m keen to share these experiences with my own kids. We’re currently researching our first family ski holiday outside Ontario, although we’re still at the “which mountain to choose” phase of the planning. If you find yourself faced with a similar dilemma, check out our “How to Winter in Canada” feature on page 65. We tapped cold-weather enthusiasts from across the country and had them share a few of their recent discoveries, from Newfoundland’s lesser-known ski hills and polar training in Nunavut to snowshoeing by starlight on Manitoba’s frozen lakes. Seriously, let it snow. 

Dans le sud de l’Ontario où j’ai grandi, peu importe le froid qu’il faisait, il n’était pas question de rester à l’intérieur. Mes parents aimaient l’hiver… à la planche. La saison débutait à la boutique locale de patins d’occasion, où mes frères et moi échangions nos modèles éraflés de l’année précédente contre des quasi neufs une taille plus grande. Après la première grosse bordée, mon père passait une bonne heure ou deux à farter nos skis de fond. Puis toute la famille se rendait dans le bois, avec des thermos de chocolat chaud dans la familiale (oui, nous faisions cliché à ce point) en prévision du retour. Une fois, nous sommes aussi allés faire du ski alpin au Vermont. Je n’en ai aucun souvenir, mais ma mère aime me rappeler que l’expérience n’a pas été renouvelée parce que je pleurais dans le télésiège et que je ne voulais pas redescendre (à ma défense, j’avais cinq ans). Les larmes ont cessé depuis. En cette année pandémique, plus que jamais, je suis contente d’avoir appris à apprécier tout ce que l’hiver canadien peut offrir. Au Canada, il y a environ 300 stations de ski, 2 millions de lacs et rivières régulièrement gelés, 5000 patinoires extérieures et un bon nombre de carnavals d’hiver et de spas nordiques. De plus, qu’on se le dise, le pays est le plus grand producteur de vin de glace, même si le produit est né en Allemagne. Avouons-le : l’hiver, ça nous connaît. Et je compte bien en profiter plus que jamais. Malgré mes débuts difficiles, je suis à présent une descendeuse enthousiaste, à défaut d’être talentueuse. J’aime aussi les longues sorties en raquettes et les sentiers glacés en forêt, et en toboggan, amenez-en, de la pente. Plus que tout, je tiens à partager ces expériences avec mes enfants. Nous planifions actuellement nos premières vacances de ski hors de l’Ontario, même si nous n’en sommes encore qu’à l’étape du choix de la montagne. Nous avons demandé à des mordus du froid de tout le pays de nous faire part de leurs récentes découvertes, entre pistes de ski méconnues de Terre-Neuve, entraînement polaire au Nunavut et balade en raquettes à la belle étoile sur les lacs gelés de Winnipeg. Bref, qu’il neige ! 

Yet it has also revealed and reinforced the importance of our society’s core values, such as helping those in need and taking care of one another. At a time when our depleted finances have forced us to curtail programs, we have maintained Air Canada’s commitment to social responsibility. In particular, through the Air Canada Foundation, we continue to support Canadian-registered charities for children’s health and well-being. This includes connecting children to medical care, combatting child poverty and helping fulfill their dreams. For example, it is estimated that household food insecurity has risen 74 percent during Covid-19, and one in three children go to school hungry. To help alleviate this, the Foundation continued with its donation program to Breakfast Club of Canada’s Back to School campaign. Beyond this, Air Canada and the Foundation participated in a food rescue effort Canada-wide, donating nearly 400,000 kilograms of food from April to October – more than 8.1 million meals. Air Canada has responded in other innovative ways. We pivoted to cargo-only flights and, working with our partner Drone Delivery Canada, we delivered essential items to a remote First Nation community. We have also given our employees unique opportunities to volunteer to help community groups or make virtual visits with hospitalized children through the Wings of Courage program. In the spirit of these efforts and the holiday season, this month we launched our Gift of Travel campaign. You may recognize the L.A.-based actor from the binge-worthy show Pretty Little Liars or, more recently, Dollface. But the Mississauga, Ontario-born new mom and entrepreneur is also behind the luggage company Béis, which arose out of a passion for travel (and packing) that all began with a family trip to Florida.

Shay Mitchell has clearly had a long-time obsession with globe-trotting. She named her daughter Atlas, for starters. Supporting evidence can be found on her Instagram feed, which prior to Covid-19 was peppered with glimpses of breathtaking getaways. Then, there’s her Shaycation YouTube series, which documented her adventures in Bali, India, Greece and beyond. And finally, there’s Béis, the luggage company Mitchell founded in 2018 – she’d been searching for the perfect bag ever since Caboodles cases informed her childhood travels, and eventually decided to just design her own. After years of sketching prototypes that merged chic looks with functionality and an accessible price tag, Mitchell wheeled her dream into reality. We were curious about how the new mom, actor and entrepreneur is making it all work mid-pandemic – and where she’s headed next.

enRoute: What have you learned in your acting career that’s helped you succeed as an entrepreneur? — Qu’avez-vous appris en tant qu’actrice qui vous aide en affaires ? Shay Mitchell: Patience, for one thing. There’s a lot of sitting and waiting on set, and with the bags there are always delays and little hiccups. Also, trusting my intuition and going with my gut. And then working collectively with others is a big one. When you’re on set, you work with a lot of different people and it’s the same in my bag business because a lot of people play a part in manufacturing. It’s always a team effort. — La patience, entre autres. On s’assoit et on attend longtemps sur les plateaux, et avec les bagages, il y a toujours des délais et des accrocs. J’ai aussi appris à suivre mon instinct et mon cœur. Dernière chose mais non la moindre : le travail d’équipe. En tournage, vous travaillez avec une foule de personnes différentes. C’est la même chose avec ma compagnie de bagages, car plein de gens contribuent à leur fabrication. C’est toujours un travail d’équipe. eR: What prompted you to launch a bag collection? Qu’est-ce qui a mené à la création de votre gamme de bagages ? SM: It was born from a growing frustration with what was being offered – everything was either out of my price range, or lacked function, or wasn’t very cute. Whenever I was on a plane, I’d draw up my dream bag on a cocktail napkin. The bags in my head always combined form and function. I joke about it now with my mom, but I always had so many Caboodles when I was younger because I cared more about the cases than what I was putting in them. I’ve always loved feeling organized, like I have everything with me that I could ever need. — Elle est née d’une frustration

J’ai toujours aimé l’organisation, toujours voulu garder près de moi ce dont j’ai besoin. eR: How do you balance an acting career with running your own company? — Comment parvenez-vous à arrimer votre carrière d’actrice à vos activités entrepreneuriales ? SM: It really comes down to prioritizing. I check in with my team at the beginning of every day and we assess what needs to be done that day, and what doesn’t. You can’t do everything all at once, and now obviously Atlas takes first priority. — Il faut établir des priorités. I think all brands need to pull extra weight to not only minimize their footprints but to also use their platforms for good and to educate people about what’s happening in the world. — Une bonne partie des enjeux sociaux et politiques actuels liés aux droits de la personne me touchent. Je crois que chaque entreprise doit en faire plus non seulement pour minimiser son empreinte carbone, mais aussi pour utiliser sa tribune de façon positive et sensibiliser les gens.

eR: How has being Canadian helped define you? Comment votre identité canadienne vous définit-elle ? SM: It’s had a lot of influence on who I am as a person and as a businesswoman. Canada always feels like home no matter where I am in the world. I feel so proud to be Canadian. It’s something that I always let people know right away and, if I could wear a badge on my forehead, I would. — Ça me forge comme personne et comme femme d’affaires. SM: Best believe I have a drawer full of ketchup chips and Smarties! I miss so much, but first and foremost it’s the people. I think there’s a Canadian energy – we’re always very welcoming and I feel that as soon as I land at the airport. Also, the seasons. Being in L.A. we have pretty good weather, but I definitely miss the leaves changing in the fall and the beginning of winter. Votre plus précieux conseil pour faire les bagages ? SM: I’m an over-packer. I think it’s important to feel like you have everything you need. Recently I got into vacuum packs. When you’re travelling with kids and a partner, packing cubes keep all of your stuff separate, but still super organized. — J’apporte trop de choses. C’est important pour moi de sentir que j’ai tout ce qu’il me faut. Depuis peu, j’ai découvert les bagages sous vide. Chandails, robes et tout le reste… c’est fou à quel point tout perd en volume. Quand vous voyagez avec des enfants et un partenaire, les cubes d’emballage maintiennent vos affaires bien séparées, et ça demeure super organisé. 

s we pull off the Pan-American Highway that parallels Peru’s coast, the irrigated greenery of the plain gives way to barren brown hills. Finally, we come to a stop outside a cinderblock building in a dusty, single-storey village, and a deeply tanned man in a faded camouflage shirt limps toward our pickup. Our driver rolls down the passenger-side window, filling the cab with the smell of cigarettes and stale sweat in the ambient 37°C heat and the newcomer reaches in to shake my hand, introducing himself as Mario Urbina Schmitt, paleontologist. We had no idea who would be guiding us to what my 16-year-old son, Alex, had described as the world’s richest known deposit of marine fossils. An avid naturalist and amateur paleontologist since the age of two (he could pronounce Xenotarsosaurus before many everyday words), Alex runs a paleontology-themed Instagram (“Paleontology Aficionado”) with 30,000 followers. He had lobbied hard for this spring-break jaunt to the south of Peru, arguing that the Ocucaje Desert fossil bed and the living fauna of the nearby Paracas National Reserve should be top of the list for our family of two adults and two teenage boys.

While Paracas, “the poor man’s Galapagos,” is well known within Peru and abroad, the Ocucaje fossil bed is not. Back in Canada, I’d googled three tour companies offering to take people there. One offered the excursion only as part of a very pricey three-week tour. The others never responded, but one had an office in a hostel in Huacachina, a quirky oasis town on our route – and that’s how we found Urbina Schmitt. As we would learn over the next few hours, he’s a mostly self-taught paleontologist (kind of like Alex) who nonetheless is a researcher at the natural history museum of the National University of San Marcos in Lima. He mastered English early in his career during a stint working for the Royal Ontario Museum and has lived in the village of Ocucaje (300 kilometres south of Lima and 50 kilometres from Huacachina) for 30 years, locating fossils and, when funding can be found, excavating them before the wind sandblasts them to nothing. By turns colourful and jaded, he’s a cross between Indiana Jones and Relic from The Beachcombers. On hearing of Alex’s interest in paleontology, he warns him not to pursue a career in it. “Go study to be a lawyer,” he tells him. Our first stop is a piece of white sandstone covered by a plastic lid that, once removed, reveals a clearly defined whale skull about three metres long. It looks like it might have died last year, but then I remember we are some 10 kilometres from the Pacific Ocean. These remains are between eight and nine million years old, from the Miocene era when the Earth was warmer, the seas higher and the Andes only just beginning to rise as the South American tectonic plate collided with the Pacific plate. This desert was a shallow, sandy continental shelf. Absent the competition and predation of giant reptiles since the Cretaceous-Tertiary extinction 65 million years ago, sea mammals had proliferated and grown large. For the paleontologist, every fossil poses a new puzzle: In this case, the skull is perfectly preserved, as if trapped in something anoxic – methane, perhaps – while the rest of the animal is obliterated, probably

Au Canada, j’ai googlé trois voyagistes qui y offraient des excursions. L’un ne le faisait que dans le cadre d’un très coûteux forfait de trois semaines. Les deux autres n’ont jamais répondu, sauf qu’un avait un bureau dans une auberge de Huacachina, étrange village oasis sur notre chemin, qui nous a mis en contact avec M. Urbina Schmitt. Celui-ci, apprendrons-nous dans les heures suivantes, est, bien qu’essentiellement autodidacte (un peu comme Alex), chercheur au musée d’histoire naturelle de l’université nationale principale de San Marcos, à Lima. Notre première halte est un bloc de grès blanc recouvert d’une bâche plastique qui, retirée, révèle un crâne de baleine d’environ 3 m, nettement dessiné. On croirait que la bête est morte l’an dernier, mais nous sommes à une dizaine de kilomètres du Pacifique. Ces restes datent du Miocène, il y a huit ou neuf millions d’années, quand le climat était plus chaud et le niveau des mers plus élevé, et que les Andes commençaient à peine à se dresser, résultat de la collision des plaques sud-américaine et du Pacifique. Ce désert était alors un plateau continental, peu profond et au fond sableux. Sans la concurrence et la prédation des reptiles géants depuis l’extinction CrétacéPaléogène d’il y a 65 millions d’années, les mammifères marins avaient proliféré et gagné en taille. Alex gets engaged in the conversation, discussing possibilities. “So there must have been enough oxygen trapped in the lungs and gut for bacteria to survive?” At our next stop, what at first looks like porous, weathered stones placed in a circle on the bleached sandstone, turn out to be a whole pod of pygmy whales, including adults and juveniles, one of their spines barely protruding from the rock. What trapped them all at once? Sudden entombment in volcanic ash, most likely. We walk another 300 metres down the hillside to a mound on the desert floor. This is the arched spine of a much larger whale, 15 metres at least, from yet another event. No excavation has taken place here – there’s no money. “It could be gone in a few years,” Urbina Schmitt says wistfully. “The wind will destroy it.” Now I’m beginning to get it. Taking in the sweep of barren sandstone around us, virtually every bump I can see is a fossil slowly being revealed by the wind. When the remains can no longer support themselves, they too collapse and blow away. Urbina Schmitt’s self-appointed mission is to identify the more complete or intriguing remains, the conservation and study of

Aucune exhumation ici : pas d’argent. « Elle pourrait disparaître d’ici quelques années, déplore M. Urbina Schmitt. Le vent va la détruire. » Je commence à comprendre. Où que ma vue porte dans ce désert de grès, presque chaque aspérité est un fossile graduellement dévoilé par le vent. Quand ces restes ne peuvent plus se maintenir, ils s’effritent et s’effacent. which might yield new understanding to science. Some of the major finds made here include prehistoric seals and 40-million-year-old fossils of a “walking” whale. The fossils we see on this day are all whales – Ocucaje has one of the best assemblages of baleen whale fossils anywhere – but Urbina Schmitt has found dolphins and giant penguins, too. He hints at some as-yet-unpublished findings: the somehow preserved cartilaginous skull of a megalodon shark (a kind of supersized great white, now extinct, and known so far only from its teeth) and a leviathan that may have surpassed the contemporary blue whale as the largest animal that ever lived. Our little convoy returns to the road, where we eat a packed lunch in the barely shade of spindly desert trees, discussing what we’ve seen. The heat is intense, and despite the thrill of discovery – seeing things few tourists stop to see – I’m relieved to hop back in the air-conditioned truck and bump our way to the village. Fully warmed to us now, Urbina Schmitt shows us into his “bunker” – a man cave made of logs, reeds and plaster extending from the back of his modest house. As our eyes adjust to the light, books, papers and the dusty trappings of desert expeditions come into focus. He boots up his laptop to show Alex images of some unusual fossils he’s found and links to some of his published works. He tells us of the celebrity paleontologists who have stayed here. (Alex, of course, knows all their names.) Then I notice the walls and ceiling, painted – quite artfully – with the images of prehistoric animals Urbina Schmitt has found over the years: cetaceans, sharks, finfish, shellfish, squid, turtles, diving seabirds – a whole Cenozoic menagerie just strange enough to catch your eye and disorient you. “That’s what I do when I get bored,” he says. Urbina Schmitt and Alex are still talking shop and exchanging digital coordinates when our driver returns and rescues us from the wilting heat. Before long we are back at our hotel in Huacachina, cooling off in the pool, our heads still swimming with visions of ancient whales. 

La chaleur est torride ; malgré le plaisir de la découverte, d’avoir vu ce que peu de touristes prennent le temps de voir, je suis soulagé de remonter dans la camionnette climatisée et de reprendre la route cahoteuse du hameau. Maintenant à l’aise avec nous, M. Urbina Schmitt nous invite dans son « bunker », refuge attenant à sa modeste demeure fait de troncs, de roseaux et de plâtre. Une fois nos yeux adaptés à la lumière, livres, journaux et signes poussiéreux d’expéditions dans le désert nous apparaissent. Il démarre son portable pour montrer à Alex des clichés de fossiles rares qu’il a dénichés et des liens vers certaines de ses publications. Il nous parle de célèbres paléontologues qu’il a reçus. (Bien sûr, Alex les connaît tous de nom.) Puis je remarque les murs et le plafond, où il a peint (avec talent) des animaux préhistoriques dont il a trouvé des traces au fil des ans : cétacés, requins, poissons, coquillages, calmars, tortues, oiseaux marins en plongée, toute une ménagerie du cénozoïque juste assez étrange pour attirer l’œil et étourdir. « Je fais ça pour tromper l’ennui », explique-t-il. Alex et lui sont encore à discuter et à échanger des coordonnées numériques quand notre chauffeur revient pour nous ravir à la touffeur. Bientôt de retour à notre hôtel de Huacachina, nous nous rafraîchissons à la piscine en rêvant de baleines des temps révolus. 

From the top of the newly upgraded 13-metre viewing tower beside the Pan-American Highway, however, the monumental artistry and sheer mystery of their purpose comes into focus. (It was the routing of the highway through the ancient landscape that first prompted calls for the Nazca Lines’ preservation.) To see all of the geoglyphs – including a giant cat just found in October – you can hire a small aircraft.

These ruins of a pre-Columbian settlement near the modern-day city of Pisco boast no less impressive masonry and urban design than Machu Picchu. The site was originally one of several prosperous city states that arose from irrigated valleys on the parched Peruvian coast long before the Inca Empire spread down from the mountains. Most of what you see today is an Inca administrative centre built atop the older Indigenous city, with public areas and living quarters giving a vivid sense of how people actually lived in 15th-century Peru. Newfoundlanders don’t get enough credit for their sense of humour. Take Marble Mountain’s Lightning Express chairlift: Sure, it’s the only detachable highspeed quad east of Quebec, but it’s also a replacement for its predecessor, struck by lightning in 2014. The Lightning Express turns out to be speedy, whisking us from nearly sea level to the peak (519 metres) in just over seven minutes (no joke). We ratchet down our bindings and adjust our gear, allowing ourselves a moment to take in views of the town of Corner Brook (one of the snowiest cities in Canada) and the rugged peaks of the Long Range Mountains. Little brown roofs cozied up together dot the valley, like one of those perfect snow-globe villages. I’m with two of my best friends, globetrotters who regularly hop borders in search of new adventures. We opted to keep this trip closer to home, eager to explore what we hear is one of the country’s best-kept skiing

L’humour des Terre-Neuviens est méconnu. Prenez le Lightning Express de Marble Mountain. Marble Mountain – one of Atlantic Canada’s largest alpine ski resorts and its longest vertical drop – has a reputation for long runs and consistent snowfall, with five-minute-max lift lines and more than enough space to keep us shredders happy. Hooting and hollering, we weave between machinegroomed corduroy and dips into the glades, where untouched powder lies between peaceful lanes of balsam firs. Follow-the-leader-style, we stumble on a natural ledge to air into a field of perfectly formed dollops of powder. Between explosions of snow, we jump from one pillow to the next, barely able to keep sight of each other. We rendezvous back on the run, laughing and breathless. Our plan is to dash into the lodge for a quick break, but then we hear live music coming from the Knotty Pine Lounge. Following the sound, we find a crowd unwinding to a local folk band’s acoustics – children giggling as they dance to the strumming. The cathedral-ceilinged room is filled to the rafters with Newfoundlander lightheartedness and bursts of deep belly laughter. The laughter is catching, the powder can wait, and we stick around to join the fun.

It seems that everyone in Winnipeg is in on something. When I pass people commuting on skates on the River Trail, snowshoeing across a frozen lake under a full moon or strolling the streets of the Exchange District, I immediately notice how happy they are – even though it’s February, with a daily high of -11°C. Living in Toronto, outdoor winter encounters with strangers usually involve heads-down shuffling through slush as we all try to reach our indoor destinations as fast as possible. But not in Winnipeg, where I’m on a three-day tour of all the best the city has to offer in the winter months. And the energy and enthusiasm literally stop me in my snowshoe tracks. At FortWhyte Alive, a nature area 30 minutes from downtown, I take an evening snowshoe tour, stamping across the 660-acre reserve on the lookout for wildlife beneath a star-filled sky. Before hanging up my snowshoes to warm up with a hot chocolate, I stop at Richardson Rrrun, a toboggan slide at least five storeys

high that leads to the middle of one of the park’s five frozen lakes. I can’t help but join those who climb the stairs for a second – and third – go. At the Forks, Winnipeg’s downtown HQ, I head to the River Trail to see the Warming Huts – architecturally impressive structures designed by international artists and firms (the likes of British-Indian sculptor Anish Kapoor and Norwegian musician Terje Isungset have participated since the competition began in 2009) to add artful shelter to the 10-kilometre skating pathway on the Red and Assiniboine rivers. As I glide between the huts (skate rentals are available at the Forks Market), droves of Winnipegers skate, walk (strollers and dogs in tow) and ski by, bundled up and rosy-cheeked. What to do next? Scale the 20-metre-high ice-climbing tower in St. Boniface? Throw some rocks on the Crokicurl rink? Loosen up at an alfresco yoga festival? There simply isn’t enough time to experience all the outdoor attractions in this city, certainly not on a weekend getaway. Winnipeg – and Winnipegers – have shown me how to do winter right.

It’s only the second day of my expedition on Nunavut’s frozen Frobisher Bay and I’m seriously doubting whether I can do another four. I’m sweating (and swearing) as I navigate a ridge of sea ice pushed into sharp accordion pleats by Canada’s second-highest tides. This jagged wall wouldn’t be so imposing if I didn’t have to get over it on skis, pulling a sled that weighs way more than I do. Growing up with tales of famous polar explorers from my Norwegian father, I’d always wondered what it’s like to adventure to our snowy extremities. To get a taste, I signed up for the Extreme Polar Training course with Iqaluit-based NorthWinds Expeditions. Sarah McNair-Landry, NorthWinds’ owner (and the youngest person to have reached both poles), equips me with map-and-compass smarts to get me through whiteouts and teaches me everything from how to prevent hypothermia to how to heed nature’s call in -45°C wind chill.

By the third day of our expedition, my sled feels less like an enemy and I can focus more on what’s around me. Baffin Island is a striking study in contrasts: rock softened by snow, nights broken by auroras. Zoomed out to the vantage point of a raven, the landscape seems to follow a monotonous rhythm, and the icescape on Frobisher Bay takes on the flat appearance of an overexposed photograph. But soon I start to see details that belie the assumption that this land is barren. Just beyond my ski tips, a lemming has etched a trail in the granular snow. Below me, blue seawater seeps through a crack. And in the distance, there’s the shimmer of open water: a polynya, where the sea doesn’t freeze thanks to the strong tidal current. The discovery of how the nature here creates art makes every stride easier, and I wonder if that’s at least partly what propels polar explorers – the singular opportunity to travel through canyons formed between upturned ice floes, beneath sun halos smearing the air with colour and across snow dunes sculpted by whipping winds. As I push into the wind on my last day, a blizzard blotting out Iqaluit on the horizon, I stop, breathe and look for the easiest route through the rough ice. Buoyed by the effort, I think: I’ve got this. And I do. I finally reach the beach and unclip from my sled, feeling that, one day, I could even tackle a pole.

Mais bientôt, des détails se profilent qui démentent l’hypothèse voulant que cette terre soit stérile. Juste au bout de mes skis, un lemming a creusé une piste dans la neige granuleuse. Sous mes pieds suinte par une fente une eau de mer bleue. Et au loin, je vois le scintillement d’une eau vive : une polynie, une zone où la mer ne gèle pas grâce au fort courant. La beauté naturelle allège mes pas et je me demande si c’est cela qui, en partie, fait avancer les explorateurs polaires : la possibilité singulière de traverser des canyons, des banquises renversées, des dunes de neige sculptées par les vents, sous des halos solaires multicolores. Dernier jour : je fends l’air, tandis qu’un blizzard efface Iqaluit de l’horizon. Je m’arrête, respire et cherche la route la plus facile sur l’étendue de glace rugueuse. Galvanisée par l’effort, je me sens en contrôle. Et je le suis. J’arrive enfin à la plage et je me détache de mon traîneau, sentant qu’un jour, je pourrais m’attaquer à un des pôles !

In loose formation they lumber down the wide-open Alaska Highway. We pull our car over to gawk at the first fellow travellers we’ve seen in days. They gaze back at us, bearded faces covered in fresh powder. It’s winter in the northern Rockies, -20°C in the sunshine, and the wood bison have beaten us to the spa. We’ve travelled from Vancouver to the northern reaches of British Columbia in search of one of Canada’s largest natural hot springs, a boreal oasis just a few hours from the Yukon border. So much more than just a soak in thermal waters, Liard River Hot Springs are equal parts walking safari and tropical winter playground. Rental-car heat blasting, we suit up, piling layers over our swimsuits for the short hike toward the healing waters. “I wonder if we’ll see any moose,” says one of my travel companions, pulling on her snow pants. Such sightings are not uncommon here in the MuskwaKechika Management Area, also known as the

73 “Serengeti of the North.” Snow crunching beneath our feet, we journey across a boardwalk over top an oddly unfrozen marsh. These springs are unusual in that they drain into a series of swamps, creating a wetland that doesn’t freeze, even in the dead of winter. I’ve heard tales of the strange things that live here, and I’m on the lookout for rare species of orchids, giant ostrich ferns and a type of hot-water snail found nowhere else on earth. As we clear the marshland, the steam comes into view, cloaking the coniferous tree branches. A series of yelps go up as we disrobe and dart toward the water, quickly stashing our towels in a cubby along the way (anything hanging near the springs goes from plush to plywood in seconds). Easing into the halfway-to-simmering water, my stiff legs soften first before knots melt out of my road-weary shoulders. With no one else in sight, our four-person group disperses, each quietly exploring a different part of this natural body of water (twice the length of an Olympic pool) snaking through the forest. There’s seemingly a “treatment room” to satisfy every ailment: a pore-opening facial in the boiling-hot grottos (complete with mineral-rich mud mask); a hydrotherapy session under the waterfall; and a DIY hot-stone massage using the nearest pebble underfoot. Looking up, I take in the dusting of snow on the branches that looks like the softest fur, frost settling on every strand of my hair as I relax a little deeper into the water.

Près du marais, nous voyons monter la vapeur qui baigne les branches des conifères. Des jappements retentissent tandis que, dévêtus, nous nous élançons vers l’eau, en rangeant bien vite nos serviettes dans un casier en cours de route (tout ce qui est suspendu près des sources gèle dur en moins de deux). Dans l’eau quasi bouillante, mes jambes raides s’assouplissent et mes épaules fatiguées par la route se dénouent. Notre quatuor se disperse, chacun explorant posément un coin de cette étendue d’eau naturelle (deux fois la longueur d’une piscine olympique) qui serpente dans la forêt. Il semble qu’il y ait une « salle de remise à neuf » pour satisfaire toutes les affections : soin du visage qui ouvre les pores dans les grottes chaudes et bouillonnantes (avec masque de boue riche en minéraux), séance d’hydrothérapie sous la cascade et massage aux pierres chaudes avec le galet le plus proche. En levant les yeux, j’observe les flocons sur les branches, semblables à une douce fourrure. Mes mèches de cheveux gèlent alors que je me détends plus à fond dans l’eau.

But beyond the importance of simplicity, one of the ultimate goals was to make the transformed Aeroplan fit people’s lives even when they’re not travelling. “When we spoke to consumers, they highlighted everyday relevance as the one thing they wanted to see more of in Aeroplan,” explains O’Leary. “This is what would set Aeroplan apart from all other travel programs.” To deliver on that promise, the team built in more opportunities for members to earn and redeem points and be rewarded for things they’re already doing – like shopping for essentials. The number one way that Aeroplan is accomplishing daily engagement is through its all-new suite of credit cards, co-branded with TD, American Express and CIBC. “This is the fastest and easiest way to earn Aeroplan points through your everyday activities,” says O’Leary. SQUARE TIRES PNEUS CARRÉS Sometimes when an aircraft sits in prolonged cold temperatures, its tires take a while to warm up, so taxiing may be bumpier. Les pneus d’un appareil longuement immobilisé au froid mettent parfois du temps à s’assouplir, d’où un roulage plus cahoteux.

Burning rubber is probably still considered cool if you own a high-performance automobile. But we pilots try to burn as little rubber as possible, even if we can’t avoid a small puff of blue smoke on landing. Unseen by passengers on board, tires are a big deal in aviation: Each of the 12 tires on the main landing gear of the Boeing 777 (Air Canada’s largest aircraft) is more than 1.3 metres across and weighs in at 120 kilograms. And every tire in the fleet has its own history, tracked in its own file and monitored closely by the maintenance team. Main-wheel tires have an average lifespan of 300 to 450 landings, while a nose wheel can withstand 200 to 350. (The nose wheel wears more when it pivots left and right to turn the airplane.) Depending on wear and tear, some tires might stay on much longer – up to 600 landings – while others will be replaced after 50.

Tires for the entire fleet are leased from Goodyear, Michelin and Bridgestone, who closely monitor each one via a serial number. Each aircraft model has a different baseline for tire maintenance: Length of service, number of retreadings, total landings and tire wear all factor into the supplier’s decisions on which tires to retread and which ones to replace. Unlike those on a car, airplane tires are treaded with several long grooves allowing them to roll at faster speeds and also helping channel water, expelling it backward. (There are no such things as snow tires for airplanes.) All tires leave their mark on every landing, so from your window seat you may spot an accumulation of black scuffs near each end of the runway – part of runway maintenance is to remove the buildup of rubber. 

Aircraft tires are inflated with nitrogen gas instead of air, which contains moisture and would freeze at -57°C, the temperature at cruising altitude. Nitrogen doesn’t form a liquid until -173°C and contains little to no moisture. Have you ever dreamed of arriving at an airport, eyeing the departures board, and booking a ticket to anywhere? The allure of the fantasy hinges on the carefree spontaneity of a snap decision. But in exchange for instant vacation gratification, this flight of fancy misses out on one of travel’s greatest pleasures: anticipation. An article published in the Journal of Vacation Marketing suggests that waiting for Bordeaux, Cairo or Orlando can prolong pleasure. Researchers compared two similar sample groups and found that people with travel plans were much happier with their lives overall and felt better about their finances, personal relationships and health than those without a holiday to look forward to. For most people, roaming elicits excitement in theory and in practice. Further research shows that spending on travel makes people significantly happier both in anticipation and in the moment than when buying material goods such as electronics, home furniture, clothing or jewellery. After all, a car or watch may go out of style, but in the end, you will always have Bordeaux. 

Some vistas, like this one over Lake Louise, are stunning all year round. “In summer the beautiful glacier lake shines blue, in fall the larches turn yellow, and in the winter the snowcapped mountains rival the most impressive peaks in the world,” says Stephen Wright, a Vancouver-based photographer and videographer. During the 90-minute hike to this lookout, Wright recommends making time to take in, and snap, the awe-inspiring scenery.
