Mahata Aero Teknologi Leads Citilink to GX Aviation Connectivity

Indonesian low-cost carrier Citilink will soon be flying with Inmarsat’s GX broadband connectivity. The project is led by wireless technology provider Mahata Aero Teknologi (MAT), in partnership with GMF AeroAsia (part of the Garuda Indonesia Group), Lufthansa Systems and Lufthansa Technik. Installations will begin later this year on Citilink’s fleet of 50 Airbus A320 aircraft. The 10-year agreement will enable bring-your-own-device in-flight Internet connectivity, driven by Inmarsat’s GX Aviation constellation of high-throughput Ka-band satellites. “We are working with leading companies in the in-flight connectivity market to ensure the onboard Wi-Fi offered to Citilink passengers is gold standard,” said Iwan Setiawan, managing director of MAT. “In addition to Inmarsat, Lufthansa

Citilink, which is also part of the Garuda Indonesia Group, is moving quickly to deploy the GX Aviation service on its aircraft, having signed its fleet-wide contract with Inmarsat just two months ago, according to Ben Griffin, regional vice-president for Inmarsat Aviation. “This shows the impressive agility and determination of Citilink to quickly meet passenger demand for next-generation in-flight broadband, together with its various project partners,” said Griffin. Launched in 2011, Citilink has grown rapidly in the Indonesian market, now serving over 40 cities. EXPO DAILY experience

Air China Goes With Global ONE Media Air China has selected Global ONE Media to license and deliver in-flight entertainment content for the airline’s global fleet. The contract, which was signed this month, covers television, as well as domestic and international movies in multiple languages. “We are very excited to contract with Global ONE Media and we are positive they will add great value to our passenger experience,” said Le Zhang, content director, Air China. Global ONE Media’s Beijing team will lead the contract, building complete media designs and accurate profiles to target passengers.

Immfly Active Portal Gives Airlines the Keys to Data Immfly has unveiled a new analytics portal and content management service called Immfly Active that will launch before the end of the year. The web-based portal enables airlines to collect and monitor data related to passengers’ in-flight entertainment (IFE) usage. Immfly Active comprises four main services: Aircraft Health for airlines to monitor the operational status of Immfly-equipped aircraft; Survey Management for airlines to develop, manage and publish surveys for passengers; Content Management for airlines to publish and manage announcements, campaigns, promotions, advertising and surveys on the Immfly IFE platform; and an Ad Server tool for airlines to track digital marketing campaigns on board flights. It also features a dashboard that displays KPIs such as a client’s access ratio and number of visitors to the Immfly wireless platform. “We have started with these four services following the needs of our customers, but there is much more to come,” said María Cardenal, product and digital services director at Immfly. 6

digEcor Releases New Glide NV Slimline Monitor DigEcor has released a slimmer version of its Glide embedded in-flight entertainment screen that can be easily installed on slimmer profile seats, “which gives more real estate back to the passenger,” said David Withers, CEO, digEcor. Glide NV measures less than three-eighths of an inch (10 mm) and has been designed for easy installation on any seatback or bulkhead. The screen is significantly lighter than its predecessor, features 4K HD video technology, up to 4 terabytes of local storage and integrated NFC payment. The screen is available in 10.1-, 12- and 15-inch sizes. Glide NV also has a swappable cartridge for USB-A or -C power and A1B1 or D2 audio options. As with all other digEcor NV portable screens, Glide NV can be used as a seatback, arm, monument-mounted monitor or secondary cabin management system or cabin lighting controller.

PXCom Elevates In-Flight Wellness Content With SkyLights AlloSky PXCom has partnered with yoga instructor Charlotte Dodson to deliver a health and wellness in-flight entertainment channel called TravelWell. Guided meditation, nutrition advice and exercises in video, audio, digital and virtual reality (VR) can be accessed through seatback screens, on passengers’ personal devices or by using SkyLights’ AlloSky VR headset. “The content is perfect for an immersive, relaxing experience,” said Cyril Jean, PXCom’s CEO.

Up Close and Personal: Spafax Profile Gets Some Added Features Spafax has added new features to Profile, the company’s entertainment personalization platform, which launched in 2016 with Lufthansa. Niall McBain, Spafax’s chief executive, said the new features were incorporated as a direct result of the company’s AI-themed hackathon earlier this year. Airlines can now add a passenger login feature to track what content is popular and offer recommendations. Spafax has also developed a chatbot feature for the platform, which can respond to questions such as: “What movies will be available on my flight to Boston?” Additionally, users can now ask Alexa what entertainment is available on their upcoming flight, watch trailers, and get recommendations based on previous sessions. Building on Spafax Profile’s new features, Spafax revealed that SAS has signed on as the product’s sixth airline customer.

Deutsche Telekom Swipes, Taps and Surfs Its Way to the APEX Cool Award It is no secret that the payment process is a huge speed bump for passengers looking to get online in the sky. This week Deutsche Telekom unveiled the latest iteration of its mobile app that reduces the entire process to a swipe and tap on the screen. Saved profiles aren’t new, of course, but they are virtually unknown in this market. This easy payment option is available today in the company’s app and works on flights operated by Lufthansa, Eurowings and Austrian Airlines. The process is set to expand to airline apps in the new year and the profile will also link to offline purchases, with passengers being able to purchase Wi-Fi at various points in advance of travel. The holy grail of 100 percent transparent payment is not quite available yet, but this work by Deutsche Telekom is a big step in the right direction. The APEX Cool Award was created to recognize the innovative spirit showcased each year at APEX EXPO. Using the APEX EXPO app, tradeshow attendees voted for the coolest innovations on the show floor, with the exhibitor with the most votes taking home the prize.

Duty-Free Startup Airfree to Star in Aerospace Accelerator Program

Aerospace accelerator Starburst has selected French startup airfree to be part of its one-year accelerator program. The startup has created what it calls “the first in-flight marketplace for duty-free products.” By downloading and uploading duty-free content on the ground, airfree is able to efficiently operate e-commerce on board without incurring the high costs of in-flight connectivity. “That’s why airfree has developed a solution specifically adapted to in-flight browsing,” co-founder Agnès Debains said. With Starburst’s help, airfree aims to secure Series A fundraising and ready for a commercial launch in 2019. Starburst connects startups to a network of partners in the aerospace sector, including Thales, Panasonic and Boeing, and has previously seen InflightVR and SkyLights through its program.

Inflight Dublin and IdeaNova Join Forces, INPLAY Heads to the Cloud Inflight Dublin and IdeaNova have announced a strategic collaboration to enhance the passenger experience. Under the partnership, IdeaNova’s technology, including its INPLAY product line, will be used for the provision of content streaming solutions for Inflight Dublin’s wireless IFE software, Everhub. In other news, IdeaNova launched the INPLAY Cloud Platform, a media management solution for video and audio assets, encryption keys and digital rights management (DRM) licenses. The platform is hosted on a leading

public cloud service, taking advantage of cloud computing’s inherent flexibility, scalability, security and worldwide accessibility. The new service gives customers the option to deploy the INPLAY Cloud Platform within their own IT infrastructure, in the cloud, or by using a combination of both options. “This modular deployment gives customers additional flexibility that they can leverage when onboarding DRM functionalities required by their business,” said Janne Pelkonen, chief technology officer, IdeaNova.

Bluebox Aviation to Offer Free Accessible IFE Upgrade to All Customers

Bluebox Aviation Systems announced that all current and future customers of its iPad-based in-flight entertainment platforms (Bluebox Ai and Bluebox Hybrid) will be able to benefit from a free upgrade to its accessible IFE (aIFE) for visually impaired passengers. Customers will now be able to switch between standard and accessibility modes depending on a passenger’s needs. Bluebox aIFE won the APEX Award for Best Inflight Entertainment Innovation at this year’s ceremony. In other Bluebox news, Air Inuit, announced as a BlueBox Wow wireless IFE customer at APEX EXPO 2017, recently celebrated its 40th anniversary by offering complimentary IFE on the airline’s Boeing 737s and Dash 8s. Onboard content is available in English, French and the region’s Inuktitut language, for passengers flying to Canada’s most northernmost communities.

SITAONAIR Inks Deals With Aircalin and Etisalat Aircalin has enlisted the help of SITAONAIR to bring the company’s in-flight connectivity solution, Internet ONAIR, to its fleet. The New Caledonia-based airline is currently undergoing a strategic development that will see its fleet renewed with Airbus A330-900s and A320neos within the next three years. Also announced during the show, subscribers to United Arab Emirates-based mobile network operator Etisalat can now use their data and minutes on aircraft equipped with SITAONAIR’s mobile ONAIR network as part of their bundle and at no extra cost. According to SITAONAIR, the agreement “represents a positive step in preparing for future in-flight connectivity provisions from the UAE, one of the world’s leading business and commerce hubs.”

Additionally, the APEX Board of Governors, whose airline CEO members were introduced earlier this week, have identified four strategic priorities for the association: biometrics, connectivity, personalization and seating standards. Also at the AGM, board members reported that APEX this year exceeded critical performance metrics for membership (111 airlines), EXPO sales (a record 152 exhibitors), new EXPO exhibitors, Official Airline Ratings participation and evaluations of APEX events. Lastly, the 2018–2019 APEX Board of Directors was introduced, with the election of Juha Järvinen, Finnair, to president, and Anton Vidgen, to vice president. Joan Filippini, Paramount Pictures, and Andres Castañeda, Aeromexico, will retain their positions as treasurer and director, respectively. And Zina Neophytou, BBC Studios and Mary Rogozinski, SmartSky Networks will join the board. For his first address as APEX president, Juha Järvinen identified his plans to work with the board to develop a 2025 strategic vision for APEX. Regarding educational programming, the board also expressed interest in having more CIOs, CTOs and women in tech leadership positions join panel discussions at future APEX events.
