3 MAYOR CATAQUIZ LAUNCHES “MAGANDANG SAN PEDRO PO” Franz Tovie G. Alverio
Mayor Lourdes S. Cataquiz launched Project “Magandang San Pedro Po” (MSPP) under San Pedro Urban Renewal (SPUR) which aims to make the sub-urban and streets of San Pedro City clean, safe, and beautiful to residents and visitors. "The MSPP is part of the SPUR Program, the direction of development of our City Government, which is aiming to modernize and develop the entire city. The MSPP is also part in the promotion of National Laws and Local Ordinances,” stated by Mayor Cataquiz in her letter of appeal to the public. Moreover, she mentioned the prohibition of sidewalk and roadway hindrances including placement of signage, concrete plant boxes, garbage, construction debris and materials, and parking of vehicles. Mayor Cataquiz asked the public and private sector to participate in MSPP to accomplish the aim of the project which is to make San Pedro a progressive and highly urbanized City in Region IV.
Do you have any idea about NAST? Perhaps you don’t. It stands for National Academy of Science and Technology which is the highest advisory body of the country that discusses and submits policy proposals concerning government and private sectors through Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM). Last July 9 to 10, NAST held its 36th Annual Scientific Meeting with the theme: “Infrastructure, Information, and Innovation (I3) for National Development, Competitiveness, and Resiliency”. The meeting focuses on the three ‘pillars’ of competitiveness namely: Infrastructure, Information, and Innovation. This was attended by the country’s leading scientists and government officials who discussed the policy and governance aspects regarding water, telecommunications, and transportation. Listed below are the following main topics tackled on the 36th ASM. Traffic Problems. Metro Manila is considered as the busiest city in the country. Resulting from the several number of establishments located in the metropolis are some traffic problems. Because of this, ASM arrived to some possible solutions to alleviate traffic problems. It includes road expansion, constructing alternative routes, and many more.
Mayor Cataquiz personally led the restoration of water ways and information drive in San Pedro City.
NAST CONDUCTS 36TH ANNUAL SCIENTIFIC MEETING Kathleen Cates D. Robles
The National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) carried out its 36th Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) with the theme “Infrastructure, Information, and Innovation (I3) for National Development, Competitiveness, and Resiliency” at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC), Pasay City on July 9 to 10.
The first day of the event concentrated in the discussion of the country’s three main areas of concern: heavy traffic, flooding crisis, and provision of internet services. Technical sessions of electronic health (e-health) and biological innovations took place the next day. It was followed by the installation of new academicians and presentation of the awards namely: Outstanding Young Scientists, NAST Environmental Science Honor, Third-World Academy of Sciences Prize for Young Scientists in the Philippines, Outstanding Books and Monographs, and Outstanding Scientific Papers. The event was participated by local scientists, members of the academe, officials of Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA), and National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA).
Flooding Crisis. Every time there is a Low Pressure Area (LPA) detected that will eventually become a typhoon upon entering the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), citizens are frightened of one thing—flood. Not an ordinary flood, but a devastating flood that can kill lives of your family and destruct your livelihood. ASM together with the government officials admitted that it will take a long time to officially remove flooding problems, but they leave us with one note: we cannot remove it as soon as possible but we can mitigate it. Availability of Internet Services. Now that we are in the computer generation, everybody can be seen handling their gadgets and browsing social media applications. ASM discussed the possibility of using internet for everyone and everywhere. The topics above had been decided after a preconference and two plenary sessions. This Annual Scientific Meeting aims to improve and enhance the Philippines’ performance to these areas for the sake of advancement of the country and well-being of its people. These possible solutions are just concerned with country’s major problems. There are several solutions discussed but not yet implemented. It doesn’t matter how many solutions we can think of, what matters is how many of the solutions will be fulfilled. I hope this one will be accomplished not sooner or later, but NOW.

A VICIOUS CYCLE OF VIOLENCE
The horrid face of hazing is once again staring at us. And like what always happens when we get confronted by something horrendous and undesirable, we hurriedly put ourselves into action, mistakenly believing that reacting for its own sake will solve the problem. The death of De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde student Guillo Servando from alleged hazing resurrected the clamor for more stringent measures against violence in fraternities and schools. Since the enactment of the Republic Act (R.A.) 8049, also known as the Anti-Hazing Law in 1995 under President Fidel Ramos, the toll of hazing related deaths seems to go nowhere but up. The way The Sphere sees it, laws are no good unless it becomes the tool of the society for change. Many solutions were hastily posted like the proposal to tighten the grip on schools holding them accountable for any hazing incidents among their students. But the proposal does not take into account many things. Hazing is illegal, no such activity is ever held in schools. The hazing cases are always done secretly, also schools cannot keep track of all activities their students engage in outside of school hours. Another proposal is to lobby for a new and specific law that will protect hazing victims and their families making sure that all the personalities involved in the act will be held accountable for the outcome of the initiation rites. It is surely a good start, however what is the assurance that it will stop hazing this time? The focus of all proposals to address the growing problem of hazing should instead be on the fraternities or groups that conduct them, the victims, and the society at large. All those directly involved in hazing may it be an officer or just a member of the fraternity or group must be accountable in a severe way. No hazing ever happens without their knowledge and consent, regardless whether they participate or not. The victims, yes, the individuals who are being hazed. In the first place, they are the ones who proactively engaged themselves to such initiation rites. We know for a fact that joining fraternities is an ego boost. There is something euphoric in it — the feel of being indestructible, the feeling of having your ‘brothers’ at your back. There is absolutely nothing wrong in joining fraternities, but remember, initiation
rites is a cycle. You will be savagely beaten, if you survive that is fine but what if you die in the process? And what if time comes that you will be heading the initiation rites and you have accidentally killed your neophyte, can your conscience take it? At the end of the day, joining these groups is a personal decision, however as part of the bigger picture, every member of the society also plays a vital role. For the parents, it is not enough that you have provided finances to your children, supporting them in each of their endeavor will give them the courage and wisdom that they can use in making wise decisions. Fraternities should remove the stereotype that they are made for gang-like purposes, instead such groups must involve themselves into community outreach programs and give aid to the society. Stop violence and start adhering to humane ways. As an old saying goes, every act of kindness will be replaced by kindness. Hazing is a vicious act of violence. It is a cycle, it will continue to humiliate, hurt, and even take precious lives. The last time we checked, ‘brothers’ should not do that to their ‘brothers’.

The celebrated Philippine Navy’s pride and flagship, BRP Gregorio Del Pilar along with BRP Ramon Alcaraz was one of the bragging achievement of the recent State of the Nation Address (SONA). PNoy also states in his SONA that a hefty amount of budget was allotted for the modernization of the AFP. Actually, these converted frigates were Uncle Sam’s 40 year old decommissioned sea cutter used by the Coast Guard. Truly, the modernization was successfully achieved through the acquisition of the second hand warships. Without Uncle Sam’s weapon system, let’s hope that our flagship may live to see the enemy.
After the fall of the Disbursement Allocation Program (DAP), President Benigno “Noynoy” Simeon Aquino III has been defending the purpose and ideals of his acts of implementing such executive prerogative – alleging that DAP had benefitted countless citizen and had significantly contributed to the economic development of the country. Further, he asks the Supreme Court to support his ‘noble’ act in elevating the country from its current state.

South Korean Defence Minister Kim Kwang-jin said, "South Korea's gesture is a small token compared with the great contribution of Filipino troops during the Korean War." The twenty year old warship will be decommissioned at the end of this year and will be donated to the Philippines, another second hand warship in addition to the AFP Modernization program. However, in questioning the scrutinized and well-founded decision of the highest court of the land—which interprets the law—and insisting the unconstitutional executive act to be valid due to the alleged ‘nobility’ of intention, is tantamount to putting himself above the law. Where in fact, it is established that we are a
‘government of laws, and not of men.’
The Disbursement Allocation Program is not a part of the lump-sum appropriation in Seoul gives a Pong-hang class corvette to the the budget (General Appropriations Act or GAA), neither it is disbursed upon the direction of lawmakers to the executive agencies and Non-Government Philippines. The gift follows South Korea's recent Organization’s chosen by them. As per Budget Secretary Florencio Abad, “DAP is a unspent appropriations and (2) “unprogrammed funds” which are windfall revenue collections, like large dividends from government corporations and financial institution (SSS, GSIS, Landbank) and proceeds of the sale of government assets and of new loans.
Abad further explained that the President, via Department of Budget and Management (DBM), realigned unspent appropriations in the executive branch and used these to augment existing appropriations also in the executive branch. The augmented items are collectively called DAP. Simply then, DAP is an accumulation of Recently, a Metro Rail Transit (MRT) coach lost control budget of savings. add to this misfortune, there were some other minor yet seasonally alarming glitches in the MRT. With all this at hand, the people and the media calls to fire the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) Chief, Joseph Emilio Abaya. Though, Malacañang states absolute trusts and confidence to Abaya. In his defence, Abaya claims that the problems at hand were an inheritance from the previous administration, a valid and commonly used excuse from every cornered fox. #Palusot.com The death of the youngest and valiant senator, Ninoy Aquino, surely spurred the hearts of Filipinos to fight for democracy against a dictator. Thereafter, the birth of EDSA People Power secured a presidential seat for Corazon Aquino. Few decades after, PNoy took the country’s highest position with a cry against corruption. This trend leads people to wonder. Bam Aquino will certainly be a better choice, but the resounding name would definitely be Kris Aquino. Does this mean we will see Tito Boy and Darla as part of the cabinet members? Welcome to the “Banana Republic of the Philiippines.”
Hitherto, the Administration pointed that DAP is in accordance of one of the sections of the Administrative Code (AC) which states that, “any savings in the regular
appropriations authorized in the GAA for programs and projects of any department, office or agency, may, with approval of the President, be used to cover a deficit in any other item of the regular appropriations…” They also barbed that the
Administrative Code existed first before the 1987 Constitution. Wherein the Article VI of the 1987 Constitution ordains that, “no money shall be paid out of the Treasury except in pursuance of an appropriation made by law.” Two contradicting laws indeed, but according to one of the General Rules of the Constitution, “if there is
conflict between a general law and the Constitution, the Constitution shall reign supreme.”
Meaning, the President has no right to ask the Supreme Court to heed his advocacy and reverse its decision in order to continue the progress in our country authored by DAP, notwithstanding the fact that it is against the constituted will of the sovereign people, is it not running against with his promise of “Tuwid Na Daan”? Is it not equivalent to making his own way different from the “ Tuwid Na Daan” we all know? A shortcut, that is, contrary to law, unconstitutional, and capricious? The nobility of the intention does not justify an illegal act. What is legal does not mean right and ethical; corollary, what is right and ethical, even to the point of being beneficial to thousands of people, does not consequentially mean that it is legal. As long as an act is contrary to the sovereign expressed in the Constitution—no matter how noble the intentions are—is still insufficient to validate an unauthorized act.
6 Blueprint Ever heard of the bottle schools? How about isang litrong liwanag? Some might be familiar, others just doesn’t seem to care. Well folks those are Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) projects of multi-billion peso organizations which started with the vision of reaching out to the community. CSR is based on the concept that every organization should extend beyond the business compliance with laws and other legal requirements. It means fulfilling the moral obligations of an organization by involving itself with commitments and activities that help and contribute to improve the condition of the society, community, and environment. It is not limited to huge organizations in fact, SPCBA took a leap and created Community Outreach Center (COC) headed by Felimon Brazas. Drive COC functions as the coordinator of SPCBA to the community. Its goals are: to mobilize the different sectors of the college to actively participate in the implementation of programs and services; execute the programs according to the strategic development plan of the office; establish partnership with other agencies; guide the different sectors of the college in instigating the plans and services; and assist the adopted communities for community development. SPCBA has always been an Institution partnering with the city of San Pedro in terms of community development through community service and outreach program.
Involvement COC’s main program is the Project Rainbow. As the name recalls, COC used the colors of the rainbow to represent different departments namely; Accountancy – Yellow, Business Administration – Red, Hotel and Restaurant Management – Green, Tourism – Blue, Computer Studies – Orange, Psychology – Violet, Education – Light Blue, Engineering – Dark Blue, and NSTP – Maroon. Under project Rainbow, every department and student organization will conduct a project focusing on either environmental management, youth empowerment, sustainable livelihood, health management, literacy, culture and arts promotion, mother and child care, and school based programs. Brgy. Nueva of San Pedro City is the first of the many beneficiaries of the Project Rainbow. Undertaking “As COC Director, my goal is to develop an avenue for the youth particularly SPCBAnians to use their talent and skills to transform the community. In line with this is to make them realize that the youth is an integral part of community building,” beamed Felimon Brazas, COC Director. An organization’s success is not only measured by its monetary profits, but by being able to produce graduates who are social entrepreneurs which are the new and defining leaders of distinction for business and society.

Here in our second home, we are provided services, learnings, books, and other things that would respond to our needs here at the Institution. But despite of having these privileges, let us not forget that our school itself has its own regulations that includes the Code of Discipline. What is this code anyway? The Code of Discipline is promulgated to provide guidance and to promote healthy and harmonious working relations in the SPCBA community. According to the Student Information Handbook, Article 9: Code of Discipline comprises of six sections that were the following; Conduct in School, Security Measures, Conduct Outside School, Disciplinary Sanctions, Board of Discipline, and Grievances and Complaints. The first section states the Conduct in School which includes the wearing of the prescribed school uniform, the attires/ apparels that are strictly prohibited inside the campus during wash-days, wearing of the official identification card, behavior in the classroom, respect for people, proper behavior during school activities, proper behavior while waiting for classes/ examination, respect for school properties, and participation in outside activities. The second section is the Security Measures that includes the search of person, vehicles, security measures, and undesirable student. The third section or Conduct Outside School tackles about the responsibility of a student on upholding ethical and moral
values and in cooperating in the renewal of the society in terms of justice and compassion. The fourth section which is the Disciplinary Sanctions discusses the major and minor offenses with their corresponding sanctions, the acts constituting major offense, and the acts constituting minor offenses. The fifth section, Board of Discipline, deliberates the administrative committee constituted and tasked with the duty of safeguarding the rights of a student who is in charged with violation of the Code of Discipline or other College policy. Furthermore, it also discussed the Board’s composition, function, right to due process, procedural due process standards, promulgation of the board’s decision, and filing of appeals. The last section or Grievances and Complaints discusses that in case grievances against any member of the academic community shall be settled through dialogue and in cases where grievances against could not be settled amicably, then as a last resort should a formal procedure be taken to settle such grievances. Indeed, being a student also comes with responsibility. And compliance with such simple responsibility of being a self-directed and self-initiated discipline among us is the college’s accomplishment.

REVIEWS 101 IF I STAY
Yearning for another drama-packed film after The Fault in our Stars? Well, be ready as another tear-jerkingmovie hits the big screens this September, If I Stay. Based on the book written by Gayle Forman, this young-adult fiction film tells the story of a 17 year old girl named Mia as she underwent a catastrophic car accident which took the lives of her family and left her in comatose. As her life hangs in the thread of fate, she has to make a decision that could change her life and the direction of her ultimate destiny. The movie is directed by R.. J. Cutler and starred Chloe Grave Moretz, Mireille Enos, Lauren Lee Smith, Lianna Liberato, Janie Bluckley, Aliyah O’Brien, Joshua Leonard, and Jacob Davies.
Everyday, we interact with different kinds of people. And sometimes, we can’t help but to categorize them into our random list of creatures — a very long record of assorted types of personality (whether positive or negative). But let me help (and correct) those lists of yours. Actually, there are just 4 types of personalities. These four types can be represented through the use of animals: First is the DOMINANT EAGLE. These are the people you don’t want to mess with. They’re great at being a leader but these guys want everything to be done almost immediately. Their weakness: they don’t plan things very well. What instantly pops into their mind should be executed right away. And also, hot-headedness is oftentimes their fatal flaw.
Next is the INFLUENTIAL ROOSTER. The most common personality to mankind. A people-person type, The Golem and the Jinni these folks are the friendliest and noisiest persons (almost) and they never run out of ideas to share with. They can turn “Where history, magic, and religion braid together” –New York your frown upside-down. Literally. But one thing is for sure, Times these individuals can’t live to be alone. Helene Wecker combines Jewish with Arab mythology and brought together two displaced supernatural beings –Chava and Ahmad. Chava (light) is the golem, a creature made of clay brought to life by a disgraced rabbi using dark Kabbalistic magic. She was made to be the wife of a hopeless arrogant man, but twists of events led her to a peculiar place alone and disoriented. Ahmad, the jinni (genie), is a fire being trapped in an old copper flask by a wizard for centuries. He was accidentally released by a tinsmith (who enslaved him in return) but an unbreakable band of iron turns him to human flesh. Their paths crossed one solitary night which starts a magical tale of navigating the physical world incorporating substance and spirit; flesh and soul. How long can they hide their true identities? Will Chava pass as human? Will Ahmad reclaim his complete freedom? Rub the lamp; break the mold, let their stories with you unfold.
Google Glass, anyone? The new gadget that will surely make the geeks freak out. Google is not just a search engine anymore. Now, it can be with you anywhere you go. This is made possible by the latest invention called Google Glass — a wearable, internet-based, voice-operated glass with a touch pad located at the side. This new invention enables you to browse the internet, check weather reports, and use GMail to send and/or receive your e-mails. Google inventors is still working on adding more features that will hook every techie fanatics. Google offers the limited edition gadget, Google Glass, for only $1500.
Lengthen your patience, for the STEADY CARABAOS have arrived. Do you know someone who needs to be pushed really hard just to move his butt and get him do what he is intended to? Well, he really is an avid steady carabao. As the personality implies, they are immovable, fixed as a rock. However, they can be a good leader for they can find ways to ease the job. Lastly, clean up your mess, or the CORRECTIVIST TARSIER will scold you. The almost-perfect persons you’ll ever meet. Everything should be in the right place and should be nice and neat. They have an arrangement that must be followed. You can often hear them saying: “Put them here, or there. Arrange it properly!” and et cetera. Because of their perfect nature, they can’t put up with influential persons, or it will be a disaster. There you have it. A complete list of the various types of personalities. Oh, wait. I forgot one thing. We all have these traits. But one of them can be very evident to you. Which one of these behavior can you relate with?

The Humanistic Educator Words by: Krisstal P. Ocampo
Stereotype It is a common notation that when someone is summoned to the guidance office; he/she might have done something worth reprimanding for. Well folks, if you’re one of them, you have committed the fallacy of hasty generalization. And that should be changed. It is in line with the objective of our new Psychology Department Head and Guidance counselor Marrieta Rasonabe. Meek beginnings Rasonabe, or Ma’am Mayet as she prefers to be called, is not new to SPCBAnians since she had previously taught LAE, Psychology, and Business Administration students here in SPCBA. She admits that returning to SPCBA is an accident but it is a decision she would never regret since she enjoys the school environment, faculty and students, and off course – imparting knowledge. Her humble beginnings rooted from Butuan, Agusan Del Norte were she took up Bachelor of Arts in Social Science in Butuan College. We were astonished to know that she have numerous Masters and Doctoral Degree in Psychology, Education, and Special Education from various universities here and abroad. But that is not it, she also hold three licenses as a teacher, guidance counselor, and psychologist. New face of guidance “Guidance is not a punishment, but a helper for adjustment. We want to change the image that every student have in their mind. Pwede pumunta ang mga students sa amin to talk about any concern, may it be academics or personal, they can also ask for advice and they can unload their emotions and sentiments”, beamed Prof. Rasonabe when asked about her thoughts towards the negative notation of student to guidance counseling. For those students who wanted to seek help or just simply have concerns regarding counseling, Ma’am Mayet is available during Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at the guidance office or at the psychology department. Life lessons Aside from being a full time educator she still find time for leisure. She gladly shared that Sundays are her chillax time, she often go to church, watch movies and dine out with her special someone. She believes that life is too short, so enjoy. You will only pass on this world once, so make the most out of it.
When asked by The Sphere if she could be any concept in Psychology she candidly answered “It would be humanistic. Relationship is a direction not a destination. At saka all is fair in love and war.”

Krisstal P. Ocampo During the second week of July, Filipinos were struck by Typhoon Glenda, leaving a trail of destroyed roads and bridges, thousands of trees uprooted, agricultural products wasted, and worst: lives taken. Even we SPCBAnians’ are not in any exemption. Students took notice that upon the recession of the class last July 21 (after one week and scheduled examination suspension) some classrooms’ air conditioning units are not working, glass panels on doors are missing, everyone could smell the musty odor of hallways, and room windows have stains of dirt and water brought by the strong wind. Decade old trees are not relieved from Typhoon Glenda. Every student would agree that it would no longer be the same when you stay at the mini park. Before the typhoon struck, Mini Park is the place of refuge for every SPCBAnian. The trees stood as the mute witness of students who played various games under the shed of the branches. Also classmates sat on benches while doing their assignments or just simply chatting about their school life. Beside the ATTY. Immediately after Typhoon Glenda struck Laguna, SPCBA is quick in taking action. School facilities are repaired, cleaned, and polished. Tree branches and all other debris brought by the strong winds are disposed properly. Natural catastrophes are inevitable but are anticipated. No matter how much we prepare for its devastation we are still left in shambles. The next time it would hit us, hopefully we are more than one hundred percent prepared.

GOING BEYOND THE STEREOTYPE STUDENT (Featuring Lapis at Papel Project) Alecs Marie O. Pajarillo When a student is asked why he/she is attending school, the usual response that you will get—studies. Of course, we are students for we must study. We are here at San Pedro College of Business Administration (SPCBA) to prioritize learning and to acquire knowledge that will help us succeed in our future endeavors. Nowadays, it is not enough that each and everyone of us are capable of learning within the four corners of the classroom. Academic performance is not the only measure of success but the ability to do something that will be of great help to the society. Yes, making a difference can be achieved within the school premises, but it could also be done outside right? For the students of the National Service Training Program (NSTP), studying is not their only reason in attending school. Their drive in participating in different school activities and their passion in helping their organization upholds not just their heart for extracurricular activities but also their desire to make a difference.
“Kabataan, handa ka ba maging susi sa pagbabago?”, the SPCBA-NSTP Department’s tag line that aspires to encourage all the SPCBAnians especially the NSTP students to make a difference and help the school in supporting outside activities. As the semester started, NSTP Department took one step forward in achieving their goals through Lapis at Papel Project. The said project successfully pushed through last July 5, 2014. The NSTP department headed by Zenia Zamorra with the aid of NSTP students, Kagawad Janet Roldan of Brgy. Nueva, and SPCBA Volunteens distributed school supplies to the 200 children of Brgy. Nueva. The Volunteens, together with the NSTP students huddled beforehand and prepared the packs of school supplies that were given to the children. Smiles were evident not only in the eyes of the beneficiaries, but with the proponents of the event as well. Surely, the smiles are enough as payment for all the hard work done. The NSTP Department, Volunteens, and the NSTP students proved that even students as young as them can start helping others, and touch the lives of the children without spending too much from their pocket, and thus, going beyond the stereotype students. Kudos NSTP Department!

BULLYING Jonathan D. Guno Bullies become ‘bullies’ because of their need for dominance and control, because they have seen others use violence for personal gain. Those who fight often have histories of other conduct problems, including early aggressiveness, defiance, and impulsivity. Schools may promote cultures where difference is valued and diversity among students embraced. Prevention of bullying may include school wide committees on changing norms about violence and gender stereotypes. It may also include programs on problem solving and conflict resolution. Parents should not pamper their children and tolerate all their wants. Efforts have the greatest impact when fully integrated into day-to-day functions of the school; and when all students, school personnel and parents strongly support those efforts. CYBER BULLYING Marie Bianca C. De Vera Nowadays, cyber bullying is very rampant. Negative comments, bad jokes, and invasion of privacy are simple acts yet they are a big deal. Victims get depressed and sometimes lead to suicidal tendencies. As a Netizen, you should be responsible with your actions. You may not know that your simple comment, joke or post can affect someone’s life. Instead of bullying someone, why not inspire by posting encouraging messages. Think before you click. Do you want to ruin a life or save it? The choice is in your hands. STUDENTS BULLYING TEACHERS Kathleen Cates D. Robles Face-to-face confrontation, criticism, sarcasm, overruling decisions and views — just some of the ways how students bully their teachers. Yes, even teachers are now victims of bullying. This kind of bullying usually occurs when: they are not satisfied with the given grade, they are disciplined inside the classroom, they find that their teacher is easy to manipulate, and/or they spot a weakness or flaw. Expressions of discontent or bitterness will be passed from one ear to another with the intention of creating bad image of the victim and will be forever misjudged at worst. In class, it will create an atmosphere of disrespect and rebellion conveyed through the way the students behave and respond towards their teacher. This misconduct should not be taken for granted. At the end of the day, it rests upon the teachers on how to present themselves to students, and establish proper authority to gain respect. Students should also do their part of observing proper respect and submission to their teachers or even to those with authority over them. When bullying cases arise, those involved should be counseled immediately with proper follow-up sessions. It will take time for both the victim and the bully to recover and learn the lesson. Finally, we all have our own limitations and shortcomings; but we should never take advantage of whatever that makes us feel superior.
CLASSMATE TO CLASSMATE BULLYING Franz Tovie G. Alverio To see a person being punched, hair strangled or left as the laughing stock of the class is a pitiful thing to watch. I admit, these things can't be avoided. Often, the victims of these terrible acts are the low-esteemed individuals and students who can't stand up for themselves. Bullying commonly begins through these subjects: envy, sexuality, or fun. An example of this was an incident between a student who discriminated his classmate by revealing (not only to the class but also to the entire school) that he was a queer leading him to commit suicide. Such fates can be prevented. A solution was finally made through the AntiBullying Act of 2013. Despite the act’s provision, avoidance of bullying must be practiced among every individual. GROUPS BULLYING INDIVIDUALS Angela S. Pineda Being bullied by someone is a bad experience, moreover, being bullied by a group of people is beyond worse. It’s like you’re trying to escape a creepy and filthy door-less room full of peculiar people where you’re running out of ways to save yourself. Imagine yourself as a new student inside the campus, walking along the hallway, facing unusual faces, portraying a smile full of nervousness and excitement. Then there are two girls pointing at you, whispering to each other and obviously schmoozing about you. Then the others beside them look at you in an insulting manner. Now, you feel rejected and confused. It feels like you want to hide yourself in a room where you fit in with people who wanted to be with, but you simply cannot do anything about it. This scenario can be avoided if the higher-year-level students are oriented on how they should treat freshmen and transferees. They should be approachable and willing enough to help them adjust to the new environment. ELDER STUDENT BULLYING YOUNGER ONES Aura Claire M. Paulino “Hoy! Sundin mo mga sinabi ko kasi mas matanda at mas malaki ako sa’yo!” (then punched and laughed at the feeble young man) – that’s one of the scenarios I have watched in television shows about a helpless lower year student and an older higher year student. You will feel fear whenever you see your nemesis — but you shouldn’t be! I suggest that as they bully you verbally, don’t mind them! The taunts they throw at you are not necessarily true. But when physicality is involved, stand up and defend yourself – if you can. But the best way to do is to tell the matter to your parents, report them to your school counselor, teachers, and anyone who has the authority to reprimand the bullies.

GILAS PILIPINAS SNATCHED HOME THE BRONZE Jezrell S. Boringot The Philippine national men’s basketball team clinched the bronze medal after Paul Lee knocked down three clutch free throws with no time remaining to beat tournament hosts China, 80-79, in the third place game of the 2014 FIBA Asia Cup in Wuhan, China.
With a score of 7566 in favor of China, Gilas Pilipinas lived up to its ‘Puso’ battle cry in erasing a ninepoint deficit late in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 77 in the last 55 seconds of the game. A f ter two f r ee throws for China, Lee made sure his comeback wasn’t in vain, drawing a foul on a potential gamewinner at the buzzer and stepping up to the line for three coldblooded free throws th at h an d ed the Philippines the bronze. Five Gilas players finished in double figures in the game, led by sweet-shooting forward Ranidel De Ocampo, who had 18 points on 7-for-8 shooting from the field and a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc. Naturalized center Marcus Douthit scored 10
points and held the fort with 22 big rebounds in a stout effort. Japeth Aguilar added 14 markers, point guard LA Tenorio had 12, and Beau Belga also chipped in with 10. China, bannered by a new generation of fresh, young and tall players led by Chinese gunner Kelanbaike Makan, took charge early, giving Gilas 11-0 run and opening up a 22-12 spread late in the first period. But the smaller Gilas squad had a hot start in the second period, scoring the first eight points behind a bucket from Jay Washington and three-pointers from De Ocampo and Garvo Lanete. Beau Belga then caught fire, scoring the next 10 Gilas points on some long range shooting, as the team briefly took the lead. The hosts, though, finished with a solid 11-5 run to close the first half with a six-point lead, 44-38. In the third, Douthit found his touch, scoring six points as he led a charge that drew the Philippines back into a 60-all deadlock late in the period. The deadlock was short lived when Chinese center Zhou Qi beat the quarter buzzer with a resounding dunk to move into the lead again. China once again took command with an 8-2 run to open the fourth quarter for a 70-62 edge. They pushed it up to nine points at 75-66 after a three-pointer from Gu Quan with 4:04 to play. Instead of folding, Gilas fought back with a quick basket by LA Tenorio and another triple by De Ocampo, his third of the game, scoring five straight points to threaten and comet to within four, 75-71, with three minutes left. The onslaught continued for the Philippines, which cut the deficit to a single basket, 77-75, after a layup and-one from Japeth Aquilar with 1:29 remaining. After foiling China anew, Tenorio tied the score at 77 all with a teardrop with just 55 seconds in the game. Chinese gunner Kelanbaike Makan gave his team the lead again with two free throws but they could not seal the win after Wang Zirui missed both of his charities with just six seconds remaining. The Filipinos then grabbed the rebound and Tenorio quickly fired off an outlet pass to Lee, who was hammered by two Chinese defenders on the final attempt. China’s youthful team – with no player over the age of 24 – was led by Makan with 23 points as the hosts suffered a heartbreaking result on their own floor.

ith hearts beating rapidly and beads of sweat trailing down on their skin, the football players strived to commit goals to bring home the famous World Cup victoriously. Germany and Argentina met on the field of the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to compete in the final match of the 2014 FIFA World Cup held on July 13 (July 14 in Manila). Millions of eyes were set upon them, watching and waiting eagerly for any goals from both teams. Cheers were deafening but the enthusiasm that was expressed was unmatchable and it was a splendor that brought the entire world together.
Though it was later revealed that Germany had better possession (67%-33%) showing that they had control of the game for the most part, it was Argentina who had better opportunities to score. Nevertheless, both teams proved to be too good and too stubborn for each other. First half of extra time ended goalless, and many feared that the finals may end with a dramatic penalty round. Mario Götze, the player who substituted André Schürrle, was the hero of the night. With only seven minutes of extra time left, Götze found a sweet opportunity to penetrate through the Argentine defense and he took it without second thoughts. His decision resulted with the remarkable winning goal as the ball volleyed pass Romero and into the back of net. By: Amebel The devil was wearing white Holding flowers and showered in bright light She looked at me with twinkles in her eyes And kissed me with passionate lies With our lips, the bond was sealed. And with our lips, the bond was killed. Words lashed like leather whips Eyes swollen as the weak heart rips I missed your affectionate touch, Your smiles, your soothing pecks so much… I had to go, and with love I came back Yet love was useless as my world turned black. You mocked me, still waiting for me Looking at me with eyes that no longer can see So here you are, wearing white Holding flowers and showered in bright light As if taunting me with your depart so vile You lay on the bed, lips curled smile No longer can speak, no longer can kiss Leaving me behind in tears while you lay bliss Coated in black full of regret, yet here you are Guiltless, spotless, white.

Left or right? If I’m going to cut off one of your feet, which do you prefer? Left or right? I wanted to reach out to her, wipe those bitter tears from her swollen eyes and whisper to her that she did nothing wrong. But I can’t. Her husband’s arms engulfed her while she cried on his shoulder, staining the fabric of his shirt with the warm saline liquid from her eyes. His voice was soothing in accord with the comforting words he hushed her with, but his wife was a stubborn lady; someone so fixated with the guilt that was slowly consuming her that no amount of words or embraces or gentle kisses could dull the pain she suffered from. If she could, she would crucify herself, but her husband was the solid barrier that stood between her and self-harm. In one corner of the room, bottles of pills and syringes and plenty other of her medications lay atop the disorganized desk. She was sick, ill with a fatal disease. They were a wealthy couple and the expense was never the problem, but money cannot buy their only wish. And when they thought their happiness was just within reach, fate had to mock them by putting an unbreakable glass between them and their dreams. She was promised a cure to prolong her life, and they were going to be parents. They could still remember the exchanges of relieved joy and enlightened smiles, but it was overwritten by dread when the good doctor slammed down the news. She was given a choice between life and death. To achieve life, she must give death and to give life, she must die. It was a hard choice and in the end she decided to die, but it was her husband’s decision that she was forced to do. And after complying, only then did she realize the horror she inflicted upon herself. ‘Oh, mother, I’m here, I’m alright’, I wanted to tell her. I wanted to reach out to her, wipe those bitter tears from her swollen eyes and whisper to her that she did nothing wrong. But I can’t. Two negatives can morph into a positive. You’ll just have to search for it with a heavy heart.

Canvases and Brush By: Ace Cy
White. Empty. Nothing. Our lives are like blank canvases w hen w e w ere born into this world – innocent and pure. No smudges. No stains. No smears. No anything for anyone to see and to judge. We are the artists of our own existence. We create colorful memories and experiences with every stroke of our brushes, and we choose what shade we’ll use to paint our own life. Bright colors were first thrown onto the page when we were little. They signify the time when we had a chance to attain true happiness and to never think about the problems of the world. The time when we were still free from everything and anything. Then, we were introduced to the other colors in our adolescence – where the minds of the teens were opened and made aware of the harsh truth of real life. Reality taught us that life is not easy, that it’s cruel and dark most of the time. On the brighter side, it also taught us how to be strong, how to avoid being buried alive in hard circumstances, and how to recover from failures that we mistakenly make. Never lose hope because the brighter colors would always outshine the darker ones. Like what the story of The Creation contains: at the beginning there was nothing, until God created the sky, earth, animals, and man within six days (on the 7th day God rested), it’ll take us a lot longer than seven days – or maybe even never – to create a perfect art. But all I can say is, why strive to make it perfect when you can be satisfied with just making it simple?

I went to the place where we first met, the place that reminds me of the wonderful moments we were together... The aromatic red roses that puts a smile on your face that melts my heart... The sweet chocolates that symbolizes how sweet our love for each other is... We were up and down. But together we conquered all the challenges we’ve been through... We proved everyone how strong we are. The dark clouds suddenly appeared, It seems like it’s ready to cry (Like what I’m doing right now...) We promised each other to be together forever These silver-grey hairs reminds me of how long I’ve waited for you... It’s impossible for me to wait anymore.. I thanked God for the strength He gave me I know it’s too late but I’m letting you go.

2. On the way, you see two rose bushes. One is full of white roses. One is full of red roses. You decide to pick 20 roses for your boyfriend/girlfriend. What color combination do you choose? (Any combination including all one color is fine.) 3. You finally get to your boyfriend/girlfriend's house. You ring the bell and the maid answers. You can ask the maid to please get your loved one, or you may go get them yourself. Which action do you take? Ask the maid or do it yourself? 4. Now, you go up to your girlfriend/boyfriends room. No one is there. You can leave the roses by the window sill, or on the bed. Where do you put the roses? Bed or window? 5. Later, its time for bed. You and your loved one go to sleep, in separate rooms. You wake up in the morning, and go to your boyfriend/girlfriend's room to check up on him/her. You enter the room: Is he/she awake or sleeping?

Our country may have been labelled as the ‘pacific ring’ but no one can deny the fact that Filipinos are still after for some good volleyball action. JULY 9 – A historic night for the San Mig Coffee Super Mixer as they broke through the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) history books and completed a rare Grand Slam Title in the recently held PBA Governor’s Cup at Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The Mixers finished an exactly-non-dominantrun of fifth, sixth, and fourth in the eliminations this season but had a perfect 9-0 in do-or-die games. In Finals, the Mixers faced the relentless Rain or Shine Elasto Painters – who is determined to grab their second championship cup – where they endured tough games that brought them into 2-2 standing for the game of five series.
hit me yet.” said Mixers’ Coach Tim Cone who was overwhelmed with the undying support of their fans, and the applauding hands of more than 23 thousand people inside the Coliseum rejoicing their feat. The players who secured the Grand Slam title of San Mig Coffee Super Mixers were as follows: Marqus Blakely, Ian Paul Sangalang, Ricardo Cawaling, Isaac Holstein, Justin Melton, Ronnie Matias, Lester Alvarez, Joe Calvin Devance, Jerwin Gaco, Marc Barroca, Peter June Simon, Rafi Reavis, Yousef Taha, Allein Maliksi, Alex Mallari, Jean Marc Pingris, and the Most Valuable Player of the 2014
On the last minute of their do-or-die final game, with Mixers up by only three points, James Yap and Marc Barroca missed two free throws, each giving the Elasto Painters to tie the game. The Painters had their chances, with top guns Paul Lee and Jeff Chan finding good looks, but their shots failed to fall. Then the buzzer echoed in the Arena that marked the very rare Grand Slam of San Mig Coffee with a score of 92-89. Very rare that it had only been done four times before, the last Grand Slam happened in 1996, and most recently by the same man coaching the Mixers. “The water hit me but this whole thing has not
National Basketball Association’s (NBA) two-time AllStar for Indiana Pacers Paul George hits the international headlines after he got his leg tangled up on the basket stanchion – resulting into an open fracture – after making a play to foul James Harden on the Team USA scrimmage in Last Vegas’ Thomas & Mack Center on August 1. This fracture is called tibia-fibula, the same thing that happened to Louisville guard Kevin Ware’s injury in the 2013 NCAA tournament. Preventable injury The injury comes from force against the bone at the wrong angle. The stanchion support for the basket was closer than NBA regulations, leading the blame against Federation of International Basketball Association’s (FIBA) regulations. According to experts, if the stanchions had been in their normal distance, it certainly would have reduced the risk for George – and most likely, spared him from injury altogether.
Unpreventable fall Basketball players invest not only their time, but also themselves – arms, knees, and feet – from possible risks in accidents that may occur every time they place their self in the hard court. They are not only battling against their opponents, but also to the bad falls, harmful trips, and gruesome injuries that they may encounter as they go run back and forth on the floor. The fall was a play you usually see 20 times a night in any given game. Indeed, these things are perks of a basketball player, thus, making it unpreventable. Obviously, George is out for the season. The bone has to heal for six to 10 weeks before any major rehab can be done. His recovery depends on how the muscle heals , it could be speedy or very slow. Hopefully, blame will also be healed and finally find its end and just let world pray for George’s fast recovery.
