Four Filipino high school students triumphantly bagged home gold and bronze awards for their research projects in this year’s Global Environmental Issues and Us (GENIUS) Olympiad 2015 held on June 14 to 19 at the State University of New York in Oswego. Together with other contenders, high school students from 69 different countries (400 out of 1,171 projects), which includes the winning projects of four senior students from Immaculate Concepcion Academy, were selected. GENIUS brought together extraordinary students to contribute ideas for environmental solutions in the fields of science, arts, creative writing, engineering, design, and business development. Annicka Koteh and Anjeli Panis snagged the gold medal for their study “The Feasibility of Utilizing Sago (Metroxylon sagu) Starch and Virgin Coconut (Cocos nucifera) Oil in the Production of an Antibacterial and Biodegradable Plastic Coating” which proposed an eco-friendly alternative to standard fossil fuel-based plastic coatings commonly found on paper wares, such as plates and cups which are often improperly disposed.

Koteh, Panis, Lao, and Cheng during the presentation of their feasibility studies at the University of New York

On the other hand, “A Study of on the Varying Amounts of Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVOH) and Cassava (Manihot esculenta) Starch as a Biodegradable and Water Soluble Alternative for Polystyrene Packaging Loose Fill” by Tiffany Lao and Melissa Cheng won the bronze award. The study aims to stop the frequent use of non-biodegradable polystyrene packaging “peanuts” used to provide additional cushion and fill gaps in boxes by presenting non-toxic, “green” loose fills. GENIUS encourages students, through scientific knowledge, to contribute solutions to environmental problems. They work on projects on environmental quality, ecology and biodiversity, resource and energy, and human ecology using the scientific method. Moreover, this competition proves that Filipinos are competitive enough to contribute for the environmental solutions needed by today’s generation.

Jethro V. Tucay The rainy season has begun. Super typhoons with tough winds, heavy rains, and devastating monsoons, are to be expected. Storms filled with forces that could destruct properties, lives, and hopes. One can never have the power to stop such natural phenomenon, but everyone has the capacity to reduce its effects. TYPHOON SEASON Typhoon is a violent tropical cyclone that occurs frequently during rainy season, which commonly is the second half of the year (and the start of school year). It affects millions of people in our country, specifically in the National Capital Region (NCR) and its nearby provinces. Heavy downpour, flooding, lack of transport: three of the frequent scenarios every Juan faces each time a typhoon comes. More often than not announcement of class suspension are delayed. Most of the time, students are already on their way to school (if not already on their classrooms) when advisory hit the mainstream. It results to disappointment in the part of the parents who experienced the inconvenience of facing the rain just to get their children to school safely. Furthermore, most suspensions are indefinite leaving the students wondering when it will be resumed and whether they will be able to finish the lesson for the school year. NEW SYSTEM Due to the countries past experiences, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) devised a new typhoon warning system. Under this system: Signal no. 1, having wind of 30-60 km/hour, estimated lead time of 36 hours with impact of no damage to very light damage, Preschool and Elementary classes are suspended; Signal no. 2 having wind of 61-120 km/hour, estimated lead time of 24 hours with impact of light to moderate damage, Preschool to High-school classes are po st po ned ; Signal no. 3 having wind of 121-170 km/hour, estimated Photo courtesy of: www.marikinanews.orgpress.com

lead time of 18 hours with an impact of moderate to h e a v y damage, All classes are suspended; Signal no. 4 having wind of 171-220 Photo courtesy of: www.newsinfo.inquirer.net km/hour, estimated lead time of 12 hours with impact of heavy to very heavy damage; Signal no. 5, having wind of more than 220 km/hour, estimated lead time of 12 hours with an impact of very heavy to widespread damage. The new warning signal is intended to provide the people with wide -range understanding of each typhoon signal and its corresponding effect, required preparation, level of rainfall and wind, and all other things everyone should know when it comes about the typhoon. Also, announcement for cancellation of classes will no longer depend on the national government, local government officials has the prerogative of cancelling or suspending the classes depending on localities situation. An example of this is when Laguna Governor Ramil Hernandez declared class suspension due to typhoon Egay last July 7, 9, and 10. WHAT WE CAN DO Through PAGASA, different multi-media, and the local government, information regarding the typhoon are readily available. The purpose of this is to avoid misinformation and minimize destructions and casualties in the affected areas. This action done by our government and Non-Government Organizations (NGO) is a good safety precaution, but inclined with this are the suspension of classes. Interruption of classes greatly affects the country’s quality of education. Some students are happy, for there are no classes, quizzes, and lessons. Who wouldn’t? But instead of jumping up and down in thrill of not having classes, students must do something productive instead. Read and understand the lessons in advance, ask friends and/or classmates to create study groups, so that when classes are resumed it will be easier for the teacher to explain and for you to catch-up with the discussion. The Department of Education (DepEd) encourages students to visit their website and download curriculums as a guide for studying, it may not be the same learning you are getting from the four corners of the classroom but it will help you keep knowledge intact until the class recommences.

The national and local election is just around the block. Hopefuls, worthy or not, are starting to release political advertisements about what they did and what they can do. Such “ads” received numerous feedback – negative and positive. It only goes to show that the new generation of voters are wiser, they consider track record and credentials more than any endorsements or perfectly executed commercial skits. But remember, it is not enough to voice out your sentiments in media platforms. One of our prime responsibility as citizens of the Philippines is to exercise our rights to suffrage. So, the question is are you a legible voter yet? If not, no worries, here are the information you will be needing to be able to do so.

October 31, 2015, the last day of voters’ registration and filing for candidacy for the May 2016 national and local elections. The campaign period is due to start in February for national candidates and in March for local candidates. With that being said, the Sphere is wondering why are we beginning to see campaign materials and propagandas being plastered all over. The greatest example is the “epal” tarpaulins, putting their names in large tarps saying “be safe this rainy season from Konsehal Blah Blah” and the worse, those that claim credit for something achieved by public money like “a road construction through the effort of Congressman Blah blah”. Pathetic.

according to them), presiding over inaugurations, visiting evacuation homes and distributing money and relief goods, holding public debates and pressconferences just to bad-mouth competing candidates, appearing as guests in talk shows, visiting local government units and promising ‘stuffs’ to them, and going viral in social networking sites by posting, tweeting, instagra-ming photos of their “noble works”. There is nothing bad about it actually, but the timing makes us judge the intention. Are these efforts genuine or just like a Filipino saying that goes by like this “pakitang-tao lang”. Whatever the answer is, we firmly stand that what we have stated above are cases of premature campaigning. What truly made us upset are As time goes by and as we know it, evolution is the efforts done by the government especially the inevitable, thick-skinned aspirants also find ways to Commission on Election (Comelec), nothing. upgrade their game. Simple campaign paraphernalias are not enough, these days, the trend is going public. According to the Omnibus Election Code, We see more and more of the prospective candidates in Republic Act (R.A). 881. Section 80 it shall be unlawful to television commercials (which by the way are not engage in an election campaign or in any manner a political advertisement partisan political activity except

during the campaign period which, under Section 3 of the same law, commences 90 and 45 days for national and local candidates respectively before the elections. Section 68 of the same code, the penalty for premature campaigning is disqualification as continuing candidate, or if he has been elected, from holding office. If the law states so, how come there is no or dismal disqualification cases filed over the years? It is because of the consequent provision on that same code. Second sentence, third paragraph, Section 15 of RA 8436 (An Act Authorizing the Comelec to use an Automated System in the May 11, 1988 National or Local Elections and in Subsequent National or Local Electoral Exercises, Providing Funds Therefor and for Other Public Purposes) as amended by Section 13 of RA 9369, provides that any person who files his certificate of candidacy (COC) within the period shall only be considered as a candidate at the start of the campaign period for which he filed his COC.

court proceedings yet, as citizens of this country we must take the action ourselves. We are not suggesting taking it to the streets, there are far wiser and safer options than that. What we are saying is, start from ourselves. Of course the first thing you need to do is exercise your right to suffrage, register or update your biometrics in Comelec offices and let your voice be heard. Be wise, do not be blinded by how powerful or rich or good-looking a political contender is, instead look at their track record. Participate in public debates and observe the candidates in interviews. Ask proper questions, most aspirants have Facebook and Twitter accounts and they will be itching to answer them. Participate not just on the election but in the entire process, the National Movement for Free Elections (NMFE) launched “Election 2016 Pampam in which people can post photos and videos of epal cases on Facebook, or tweet using the hashtag #pampam. It may not stop the premature campaigns but it will surely make an impact to other voters. Gone are the days when people vote for popularity, as we have mentioned above, evolution is inevitable. For the thick-skinned politicians and aspirants out there: Voters are far wiser and clever now, even if you flood all media platforms with your premature campaigns it had dismal to minimal effect in the election results.

Let us put it in layman’s term, it simply means that a candidate is not an official candidate unless it is the start of the campaign period; therefore, premature campaigns can never happen because they are not political candidates yet but merely hopefuls of becoming one. It is despite the fact that most of them had clearly and officially stated their claim in various political posts. Surely as citizens of this country we Again, shout-out to those thick-skinned cannot do anything but blindly accept and bitterly aspirants, oh our bad you will surely disregard this since swallow the provisions of the law. No one is above the as thick-skinned as you are, you would not know we law right? are referring to you. Since we cannot do anything about it in terms of

What is it about Vice President Jejomar Binay that several television stations in the Philippines flash’s reports about him? Oh yes, he was charged of plunder over the alleged overpriced construction of the P2.28 billion Makati City Hall Building II when he was then mayor of Makati City. How about Janet-Lim Napoles? You are right, the ten billion peso Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) scam. Both case involved tons of money. Acquiring wealth for the sake of making yourself rich is corruption. And when someone found out about it and offer something to cover for your illicit acts, that my friend is called graft. The series of unlawful acts made many Filipinos undergo continuous suffering. What are the steps done by the government to avoid such? Or should I ask, is there a concrete step in the first place? Both scams involves honorable members of the Senate and House of Representatives. The legislature, the lawmaking body of the government, who is supposed to draft laws to eradicate the corruption in the country, are the ones involved in such fraudulent schemes. I bet Napoles’ name rings a bell to each and every Filipino, the head of JLN Corporation and the monster behind the PDAF scam. Now the person involved in yet another scam is not an ordinary one. He is no other than the Vice-President of the Philippines. Take note, ‘Vice President’. Citizens would not be surprised if one day, a report about President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino’s illegal acts bombarded the national television. If a higher official can do unlawful acts, what do you expect from its subordinates? The Philippines has really reached apex level of political viciousness and ruthlessness.

Have you not noticed yet? In the Philippines, the ‘bad guys’ get re-elected in the legislature, governorships, and even in the presidency. Good thing, those presidents are ousted from the office. The funny thing is they still manage to make a comeback. Either being in national or local office making sure that they will still have a certain amount of power to be a major player in this pathetic league. Haven’t we learned yet? If the politics in the Philippines will be a primetime drama and all politicians are actors, they would have a bigger chance in winning prestigious awards. This kind of plunder acts might caught the attention of the Senate and they will eventually call a non-sense Senate hearing. On the other hand, the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) will take ‘forever’ to gather evidence regarding the case. Then, the whistle-blowers (at first, they are brave but believe me, their dauntlessness never lasts) end up being threatened and started to fear for their lives. Sooner or later they will be afflicted by a sudden amnesia thereby forgetting and denying any earlier revelations concerning the alleged scam. Finally, the media and the public will lose interest in the case. Another scandal erupts and it will hit the headlines and the previous ones will be buried down the rabbit hole until someone needs to dig it for their own personal gain. That is the most common scenario in the country regarding the illegal acts of the influential persons in the government. So if you are wondering what happens to the people involved to the case after the public loses interest? Well, your guess is as good as mine. These alleged wrong-doers all go wherever they want to and enjoy their illgotten wealth. Maybe sipping piñacolada in an exotic Caribbean destination, I don’t know. And the Filipinos? Well, we all suffer for the consequences of our vicious government. Corruption sa Pilipinas lang ang may forever. Our country has still a long way to go.

The Philippine government and political system are more often than not described as corrupt. The presence and the acceptance of political dynasties, where public office and political powers are being held by persons related to each other, has made corruption an easy possibility by tampering with the principle of checks and balances of democracy. Section 26 of Article II of the 1987 Philippine Constitution states the prohibition of political dynasty, yet the absence of a statute or law makes it allowable in political processes. The anti-political dynasty bill is pending on the floor of the congress. Under one version of this bill, only one family member will be allowed to hold public office from the barangay up to the national level. The other less-strict version allows two. Though considering that a huge percentage of the legislators coming from political dynasties, this bill would face distaste and disfavor. However, a voting citizen can put an end to this abusive system by voting for candidates not involved in political dynasties. The situation is direr than what is perceived; a change must be done. ————————————————————————————————————————————————— Manila sees bilateral talks with Beijing as futile, despite its preference from China. Chinese aggression, including land reclamation and military presence in the disputed areas in the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea), has left local fishermen’s livelihood on the line. Despite of it being within the Philippine Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), China has deprived the Philippines of utilizing these areas. Aquino’s administration has shown strong resistance, leading him to seek for international support specifically from the United States and Japan. Perhaps China was so bold in its activities for it has been expecting the country to run to the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) for help, an organization China has influence in. Instead, it brought an established power in the story, the US, making it a more difficult field to play in. G7, a group of seven states of major advanced economies (including US and Japan), has voiced out implied opposition against China’s land reclamation in disputed areas. Hence, more international pressure to the Asian giant. If China manages to claim such areas, the Philippines will lose 80% of its EEZ, 80% of its fish. The situation would be a disaster for local fishermen and the country’s overall economy. Manila brought up the case against China to an arbitral tribunal in The Hague, Netherlands, which is responsible to hear the case. While the Philippines argues that China has no historical rights, its 9-dash line is baseless under international law of the sea, its excuse for an overlapping EEZ is invalid, and its environmental damage is hurting Philippine waters, China’s strongest argument is that the arbitral tribunal has no jurisdiction because the case is not maritime by nature. But Philippines argued that China has offended its sovereign right to fish in its EEZ. Therefore, the tribunal has jurisdiction under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). ————————————————————————————————————————————————— The Philippine Senate has passed Senate Bill no. 2679, also known as the Unified Student Financial Assistance System (UniFAST) bill, which rationalizes all ongoing government student financial assistance programs, to help students get college degrees. Under this bill, scholarships and grant-in-aids would be given based on qualifications and family income, as well as a socialized tuition scheme (40%-100% tuition discount) that would establish affordability brackets based on personal circumstances, family incomes, family and socioeconomic characteristics. A National Student Loans Program would be implemented by the time the bill becomes a law, which a qualified beneficiary would be provided college loans that would be payable on a shortterm period (per semester, trimestral, or quarterly) or a long-term period (payable within 10 years after college), where such loans would be deducted from salary. Such opportunity would boost Filipino competency, which is a need to level with the global field.

Their eyes are set upon a common goal. Their eyes, one blue, the other black, play a role. One sees the left side of reality, the other the right. Convinced of their ideology, felt the need to fight. They stand upon a divided pedestal. Voices loud, persuasive with potential. Filled with promises, hope, yet with bash and hate, Their voices speak with words that ccome of late. The practice of such is healthy, or so they say. They dream of unification, yet in division they lay. Some play their cards in the shadows. Some keep their aces until the luck narrows. A common goal they share, A goal with different means to dare. Faced with inconsistency, flowered with hope. Yet unknowing of the one that pulls at the end of the rope.

Dear Michael, Back when we were kids, I remember how we used to shower in the rain wearing nothing. We were both young and innocent about things. You promised me that we will always be friends until we grow up. But that never happened. After our elementary graduation, your family decided to move in the city. I was left behind. You are my one and only friend and you just left me without saying anything at all. I really hated you to death that time. I went to high school without someone to accompany me. You know what, I spent the entire high school year sitting at the back of the class, staying invisible as long as I can. I don’t have anyone to talk to. Everyone has their own circle of friends and me? Nothing. I have nothing when you left me. Finally, it’s my graduation. If you’re thinking that I’m excited to receive my diploma well, you are totally wrong about that. I just want to climb up and receive my diploma and after that, I want to leave the four corners of that institution that condemned me to pain, agony, and cruelness. When I was about to receive my diploma, I saw a familiar face. Yes. A very familiar face. The face of a man I’ve been longing for. A tall, gray-eyed man approached me wearing his ever seductive smile. His smile is even brighter than his skin. He has changed a lot, but I can still recognize his face. He told me something that I never want to hear in my whole life. I don’t know but certain emotions just popped in my body. My stomach is like filled with butterflies that tickle me from head to toe. I went down and hugged my parents. He told me that he was really sorry for leaving me behind. He never meant it. That is what YOU said. But of course, like every girl in a story I decided not to believe you. Despite your effort to come to my graduation, I’ll never forgive you. Yes. You read it right. I never believed you because right from the start you gave me so much reason to disbelieve everything you say. From the start you told me that we will always be friends, but see? That never happened. I told myself that I won’t trust anything and anyone again—never in my life. I realized one thing from this, people will always deceive you. It is up to you, if you will let them. In my case, I was stupid to let that young man deceive me and I regret it. Our friendship is like a diamond, but in just a snap it just fade away and I know that I can’t ever bring back the sparkle once more. Sincerely yours, Ana PS. Maybe there are just people who are always below the line. People who are always out of the equation. People who are always left behind. And luckily, (sarcastically speaking) I’m one of them.

One. Two. Three. The clock strikes midnight, yet another shift to cover. My name is Agent Mitchelle Olsen, and I and my colleagues take care of the time. Well not precisely the time, but what people makes out of theirs. Let us just say, we make sure that everything follows the plan. Yes, humanity’s plan, blueprint in the words of engineers and architects. Say for an instance: Jackie and Wilson are lovers, Wilson plans a wedding proposal, Jackie is not supposed to accept it since she is for Peter, I will cause a delay maybe a traffic situation an accident or two, bad signal reception so they won’t be able to communicate, or one of the drastic ones, leading a girl to Wilson’s direction and make sure that she will kiss her and Jackie will see it – bam! End of relationship, Jackie will be with Peter, plan executed. Do you get it? But the thing is, I am not supposed to divulge such information. So what is the plan again? What plan are you talking about? (Wink) I am a normal being, well in your definition I am alive and has form. The only difference is, I am ageless, nameless, fast, smart, ruthless, and most important of all, emotionless. Well, it is not like I am a monster for not having a ‘heart’. People see snow and I see white, people get excited and I get cold, people are mesmerized, well me I really don’t care – at all. It was one Saturday afternoon, I am about to execute a plan, I will make sure that Mark (a painter) will drop his paint bucket in the street and it should directly fall on Martha’s (elderly woman) car hood, she will get out and will be hit by a truck from behind. Morbid, nah… typical. I was waiting at a bus stop, it was about to rain, such a cliché scenario for dying. The bus will bring me to Mark’s building when a young woman sat beside me. She smiled (you know that thing when people are happy) and as a sign of courtesy I smiled back. Timekeepers like us should have a minimal to no contact to anyone. She suddenly spoke, “Have I seen you before?” she asked. “I am afraid not” I politely answered. The bus came and I sat down on the empty seat, the woman searched for a seat and found one next to mine. I was avoiding her then she snapped, “I remember you, you were in my father’s funeral, Derick Park, remember?” A million memories flooded my mind. A Saturday afternoon as well, it was about to rain, the woman and her teenage child is wearing black clothes. I was standing four feet away from them, they started to walk towards me. I was there to make sure that the girl will stay until it rains so she will caught a cold which will later turn out to be lung cancer. She will die only sixteen years of age. But as they walked towards me, the girl glanced with her eyes shade of blue, which turns to gray as tears pour out of them. I was frozen from her stare, I saw deep sadness an indescribable feeling actually. Before I knew it, she was riding a car and they drove away. My first mistake, which I can never change. And here she is, fifteen years after. I looked at her, same blue eyes, the only difference is it looks calm, like that of a still wave less sea. I nodded and smiled, it was genuine, why am I happy I even answered her, “Yes, it’s been a long time, how are you?” What is happening to me, there should be no engagement. “Wow, you didn’t seem to age, what is your secret?” she asked. “I was born with it, I don’t know if it is a blessing or a curse”, she laughed, I did too. It was the start of the conversation, I don’t know how long it

lasted when she finally realized that she was at her stop. She grabbed her purse and searched for a card then handed it to me while saying “It was nice seeing you again, I hope we could have lunch sometime”, “I’d like that” I answered immediately.

I just followed her with my gaze, she waved and went inside the building. That is when I realized, I missed Mark’s building. I shouted stop to the bus driver, he merely stepped on the break—I don’t care, and I jumped and run a few blocks. Mark is still painting, but Martha’s car is not in sight not even the truck. Damn! My second mistake. I grabbed her card and torn it to a pieces, what is up with her that I lose who I am. It is as if I am becoming human whenever I see her, my intelligence escapes me. Making me act weird, non-conformant with the plan, careless in layman’s term. I brushed my hands on my hair and breathed heavy to release my exhaustion, I bet management would scold me for this. And just that moment, a nearby telephone booth rang, I know it’s for me, so I answered it. Then a thunder of voice shouted “what the hell, Olsen? It’s as if you haven’t done this before, you better not screw for the third time or you will be dismissed, understand. For now you’re suspended”. I just nodded and slammed the phone. Six months after that incident I was back in the force, my first case. Make sure Lana will meet Jacob in her favorite coffee shop, they both are bringing the same book, the pelican brief by John Grisham (her favorite author). They will bump into each other and will exchange books, Lana wrote her full name in the book. Jacob will search her in Facebook and to cut the story short, they will end up with each other – destiny. I was eager to impress the boss so I went to the coffee shop earlier to study the layout, I saw Jacob a block away from the establishment, perfect. I went inside and searched for the girl, I couldn’t believe my eyes, It is her, she was holding the book she was about to stand up. I don’t know what hit, I stride and reached her in just a couple second. She was surprised to see me, I reckon it took her a while to

recognize me. She was puzzled at first, then I started to mumble “Hi”, the only thing I could manage. “I lost your card, I was about to save your number when the wind blew it. I took the same bus for the last couple of months hoping I could bump into you again”, I explained. She was speechless, “can I sit down” she nodded. I glanced back and saw Jacob ordering a coffee from the barista. As soon as he got his coffee, he went away. I stared at her eyes, it is a deep blue. Third

mistake, I knew it’s

worth

it.

A friend of mine once told me that depression is like being thrown in a deep dark dughole. You can only see a part of the sky (which represents hope), there is no way up without asking for help. But being depressed entails finding it hard to trust someone with your worries and instead of seeking help what they do is dig down further their rabbit hole in hopes of finding another way out, but instead they are trapped. Escape is not an option, so they are left with no choice but to try and end their lives. Until now, it saddens me to see the multiple scars on her legs and wrists. Poor girl, she was so caught-up in digging her hole that she did not notice the multiple ladder we, her friends, are handing her. We grow worried about her, until one day. An intervention happened we joined a group called Youth for Christ (YFC), with the help of the facilitators and friends she started to get back on her feet, off course outside her rabbit hole. When I look at her now, I see a different person, a survivor. I guess, the greatest gift we could give our friends experiencing depression is our ears and open mind and heart. People undergoing stress oftentimes are closed-minded, don’t get me wrong. What I meant is that they find it difficult to believe that other people understand them, understand their situation. Do not be tired of making them feel loved and respected despite their disposition. Depression, like any other illnesses can be cured. Let us help our friends realize it. -KRISSTAL P. OCAMPO Depressed people are often unhappy. It is a key symptom for a person to kill one’s self. Reports about several people who committed suicide around the globe are frightening. It

but

may be a result of a traumatic experience, remember, committing suicide is not a normal response to stress. I don’t understand why these people would take their own lives. I know life is not perfect. It has its ups and downs but

the point is, we have so much things to live for. It can be our family, friends, work, and even ourselves. Our life is the only thing we have, so why bother to take the only thing we have? As I’ve said, life is not perfect, and there is no such thing as a perfect life. At the end of the day, it depends to you on how you will take the negative vibes. Are you going to take it as a challenge for you to be better? Or will you take it as it is and make yourself suffer? The last choice is always in your hands so be wary of it. -BIANCA MARIE V. BAYLON

We fight our own battles, and they come in many forms. Depression is the lock that keeps choices inaccessible; it’s a struggle. It’s not easy to switch views like people told you to. You tried to find reasons through blaming it on others and on yourself. You may rely on medication and self-harm, to which may be your way of keeping yourself breathing. And I applaud you for that—at least here you are, still alive, still fighting, still reading these very words. It’s not your fault. Depression creeps like a slithering snake, ready to attack at any given moment. And ready or not, it will come for you. It is only human to judge; it is inherent, a necessity for survival and competency. But it is not universal; it is relative and somewhat unfair because of its inconsistency. To acquire good judgment is to have a sense of understanding. If you, dear reader, do not understand what depression feels like, then do not judge so quickly. There are too many layers that comprise a single story. And even those who commit suicide are just victims themselves. How can we truly say it’s their fault? My message has no advice for the depressed, only a statement. And sometimes people take comfort from hearing words from a complete stranger. And I say, it too, will pass. -TARYN ANTONELLA D. GONZAGA According to World Health Organization (WHO), depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide. In addition to this, depression is the most common cause of suicide. In fact, 2 out of 3 people who commit suicide are depressed at the time they took their life (Health.com). Anyone can be a victim of depression. Young or old, man or woman, rich or poor—depression chooses no one. But in this generation wherein depression is rampant, how do we see it? How do we deal with it?

There are many factors why do people get depressed. We too, experience depression at some point in our lives. But let us all remember that suicidal attempts give no solution at all. Instead of getting a rope and tying it in the highest place of your house, why not face your problem. Ask for help. Don’t be a caged of your wrong decisions. If you know someone who is depressed, it is better to approach him/her and give your helping hand and shoulder to cry on. See the brighter

-MARK KENNETH M. GARCIA News regarding suicidal acts because of depression nowadays are increasing. One of the reasons is the unacceptance and the tendency of people to judge victims of depression. Many of them choose to live alone in their own little darkness because of physical and social discrimination. Bullying is also an issue. They tend to be manipulated and beaten, causing them to find difficulty in finding comfort in the classroom—resulting in dissatisfactory grades and failure. The most common problem is within the family and the lack of communication and understanding between members within. Because of that, they may lean on drugs for relief. And when they breakdown, they may commit suicide. All that might be needed to save a life is a listening ear and a pair of comforting arms. -DANNIEL G. GUICO Ending one’s life is probably the last resort a depressed person can have. We cannot judge them right away, noting that we know nothing of what they’ve been through. Hence, we must remember that our body is given by our Almighty Creator and it is clearly stated in the Bible (1 Corinthians 3:17) “For God’s temple is holy and you are that temple.” We only borrowed our body from God. Therefore, we do not have rights to bring harm to it. Everyone experiences depression. In fact, everyday, people are being challenged on how they handle their burdens. Now, it’s in our hands if we’ll going to be deceived by the other power. It’s not a good mindset to think that ending your life is the trump card to relieve the pain and depression you have. Remember, you are not the only one who’s being tested. Committing suicide is an act of cowardice. Pray instead. Always bear in mind that there are always stars even in the darkest skies.

depression is just a figment of life. It will come but it should go. -SARAH MIE S. SANTIZO Suicide is an act of killing oneself intentionally, its primary cause is depression. Depression is a natural hollow state that comes unavoidably. It is like being in a low-lying place, the state of having low mental vitality and dejection. It is also the condition of being less active than usual. What is the cause of it? Problems, rejection, fear, lack of spiritual aspects and love, and not involving to social activities. If a person is depressed, he/she has no selftrust, goals, and always despondent and downcast. He/she wants to end up his/her life to end the pain. One example is family problem. When you have this problem, you doubt yourself, you become envious and resentful. You also reject other people and disconnect them in your life. Think about it, each family and persons has their fair-share of problems. Sometimes, it is our digressions why we encounter this problem, but we don’t have to blame ourselves. Instead, we should take it and charge it to experience and make that as an inspiration throughout our lives. But as we do wrong options and choices, God is always at our side helping us. He will provide all things that we need, just ask, even though everyone rejects, judge, and criticize you for all your mistakes. Make friends, enjoy community projects, eat healthy foods, and involve yourself in sports, spiritual and social activities. By doing such, you can overlook depression and the thought ending your life will never come to picture again.

Have you ever wondered what life would be like if we knew everything that will happen in every second of our existence? Say for an instance, you knew already that you’ll be called for recitation in one of your subjects tomorrow. What will you do? Definitely, you’ll study and understand the lesson by heart and you can answer all of your professor’s question. Such an ideal ability that will make everything fall into its perfect place. Sounds good right? Having such ability would be great because we can prepare ourselves for any circumstance in our life. It can pave way towards perfection, preventing any mistakes along the way. Come on, admit it. Your minds are itching for all the possibilities, am I correct? If that is the case, every person would be at peace knowing what their future awaits them. Our world would be much better, more livable – it will be a utopia in such a way. On the other hand, we may find it as a way of cheating. Not only deceiving other people but ourselves as well. Yes, we can see what will happen and we can avoid them if we want to, but don’t you think it’s too much? The element of surprise vanished. The excitement of not knowing what the future has in store for us. Everything would be like the plays in movies—scripted and acted according to what the director demands them to do. But thank God that He has not given us this gift. I would rather be surprised everyday than to know what my “master plan” is. There are endless surprises in our lives. Some of them are pleasant and some are not. But let’s not be sad about the unpleasant things, those are the inevitable part. Look at it as additional spices, sometimes it taste bad on its own, but it enhances the whole dish at the end. Don’t be afraid to accept whether it is a positive or a negative one. Just a piece of advice for everyone: Keep smiling and make the best out of it!

Education is the key to success. We study to learn and to prepare ourselves for our future. All of us need quality education to face the real world. Recently, Filipino high school students seized gold and bronze awards in this year’s prestigious competition entitled Global Environmental Issues and Us (GENIUS) Olympiad 2015 held at State University of New York in Oswego. The students came from Immaculate Concepcion Academy, a private nonsectarian educational institution. I believe they were able to qualify the said competition because of the quality education they had. There are many factors needed to be considered for the education to be classified as quality. But what are these factors? Learners. Healthy students can learn well. Nutrition is very much needed for the development of the brain. If deprived, there will be a huge impact in learning. However, physical needs are not only the keys to produce quality learners. The support of the family is also needed to develop and encourage the youth to strive for the best. Who wouldn’t endeavour for the top? Environment. Relatively modern and well-equipped buildings help the students to learn and explore the fields of learning. It is also a necessity to have a peaceful and safe environment for them. Acquired Knowledge. What’s the essence of having excellent learners and well-equipped facilities if the knowledge given is not worth it at all? Recently, the Department of Education (DepEd) enhanced the curriculum to K to 12 for the better improvement of education here in the Philippines. The literacy and numeracy of the students is also considered in the curriculum. The K to 12 curriculum also develops the life skills that the youth must be acquired. Routines. The Licensure Examination for Teachers also known as LET qualifies a teacher to apply his/her profession. This is to distinguish the competency and efficiency of the aspiring teachers. Students would love to learn if there teachers were able to deliver well the knowledge they needed. The school’s supervision and support also create a big impact. The accessibility of the school facilities and the leadership allow the students to perform well. Now, the outcomes. Education would not be considered quality if there are no outcomes seen. Achievements should be evident in order to say that the education brought to the students is impressive. Life-long learning of the students are the outcomes of all the knowledge and wisdom imparted to them which will they use in the actual world. Every year, the government allots the biggest budget for education. They were the one who provides for the public schools to give Filipino youths the education they need to have. But what’s going on now? Do we really see the changes they’re doing? How about those who can’t afford private schools or even go to school? Should these unfortunate youth be deprived for having the quality education everyone should have? I hope someday that even the public school students can compete for the international competitions like GENIUS.

Awareness of what is happening around you is a vital part of progress and success. Knowing the past and the present will predict the future, therefore providing the directions you need to engineer your desired outcome. A complicated statement if one would ponder on, but the introduction allows you to understand a portion of how the mind of SPCBA lecturer Jhe-Rico Sam Colina works. The Starting Line Despite his young age, Colina has already set his life on motion. This Baguio local took up Political Science and graduated in Adamson University (ADU) in Manila on March 2014. He was a member of ADU-POLITIKA, a student organization for Political Science majors, responsible for organizing forums and conferences about political and social issues. He is currently working on achieving his Master’s Degree in Political Science in De La Salle University in Taft. Whilst being a student himself, he teaches subjects like Philippine Government, Anthropology, Philippine History, and Sociology and Humanities to students in SPCBA. Potentials Revealed Though he refuses being addressed as a professor, explaining that he is a student himself taking his MA, his teaching methods are not questionable. Colina radiates a friendly aura that makes his students comfortable enough in the classroom, lifting them from the burden of heavy pressure. But he established an authoritative figure well enough that he is highly respected and not being taken lightly. His passion for imparting knowledge is plainly seen when he is discussing lessons. Colina delivers well with clarity, successfully catching the class’ attention every time. As expected from a man of big potentials not just a professor but as something even better. The Destination When asked about his plans and dreams, Colina said he wanted to be involved in international relations. The first thing he told the Sphere was that he aims to be an accredited diplomat officially representing the Philippines to a foreign country, or in other words an ambassador, preferably in the United States. His goals are set high; the path to get there would require a strong sense of determination and endurance. But he knows that. He also stated that the journey to becoming an ambassador is not going to be easy, the qualifications being strict and complex, not to mention the significantly low passing rate on the Foreign Service Officer Exam. But he believes that he is going to exceed these standards; he is already building blocks. Apart from that, he also mentioned that he strives to become the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Secretary and the United Nations (UN) Secretary General, both of which the highest position in their respective organizations. Now when commented that these are indeed big dreams, he told that if people are going to dream, “dun ka na sa pinakamataas.” If one would strive to hit the target, aim high. Think. Act. Move. Colina has a message for the students of SPCBA. He told us that they should change the way they think about education. Concluding it all, he wanted them to know that a passing grade is not enough. The journey will not end the moment a person is handed a diploma. He wanted students to be achievers, to be

distinctively excellent, the kind that would serve the country and in return, the country would be proud of. He advised that they should strive for scholastic awards, earn titles, and get degrees. He discouraged students to settle for something less when they are clearly capable of doing so much more. Students should attempt to become their best, worthy of praise and honor. He wanted them to perceive politics in a different, nonnegative way. He described the classroom as a place where politics is involved. Politics is present in the school environment and many other places and situations people often find themselves in. It is not just about the state and its relation to the government, its people, and its progression. A certain incongruity most people have commonly mistaken for when they hear about politics is the idea of corruption. Though it is comprehensible why people would come up with such an outlook, considering the controversies that bombarded the Philippine media about politicians involved in it, Colina stressed that corruption is not the core of politics and the government, and therefore should not be perceived that way. He said that as citizens, members of the society and of the country, we should be mindful of the endeavors around us. He discourages ignorance. For the good of the public and of each individual, he suggested that people should always have a stand, even students, for the reason of knowing where they are in the vastness of this earth. That is how progression works: Knowing the right details and formulating decisions and acting in response to it. Individuals do not work alone, they depend on the society to achieve success. Stay oblivious and one would be lost in this competitive world. There is so much this world can offer. All that is needed to do is explore them.

Imagine a scenario where the Philippines ranks top amongst others, our Filipino athletes praised and celebrated, the three stars and the sun of our country held high above, majestic and worthy of pride. This situation seems too far to reach for the common Filipino, some may even feel more nonchalant about it than interested. Such is not viewed realistically but pessimistically. One purpose of international competitions is to promote sports involved therein—but an unspoken yet implied purpose is the promotion of participating countries as a whole, a way to dab an entire nation’s name with sweet perfume. The greater the achievement, the greater the respect paid, the greater the influence to national pride. When Germany won the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, they were showered with love and loud cheers from home and from fans all over the world. When they returned to Berlin after their grand victory, they were welcomed with a parade in the city, attended by hundreds of Germans who were waiving the black, red, and yellow flag of their country. Their triumph provoked national pride, something the Filipino must acquire, and a longing need of the Philippines herself. If our Filipino athletes could achieve that kind of status, it would boost the Filipino’s morale in the capability of their fellowmen, an achievement far more important than gold medals, cups, or belts. At the conclusion of the 28th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Singapore on June 16, the Philippines brought home 29 gold, 36 silver, and 66 bronze medals, totaling to 131. In 2005, the Philippines hosted the SEA Games and successfully triumphed over the competition, standing on 1st place with a total of 291 medals comprising of 113 gold, 84 silver, and 94 bronze. Then it landed a surprising 6th place on 2007 SEA Games in Thailand, bagging 41 gold, 91 silver, and 96 bronze for a total of 228. In 2009, in Laos, Philippines brought home 38 gold, 35 silver, and 51 bronze, for a total of 124, 104 medals short of last SEA Game’s numbers yet a rank higher as the 5th placer. In 2011, in Indonesia, the country scored 36 gold, 56 silver, and 77 bronze, totaling to 169, ranking lower than last in a 6th place stand. Philippines slid down to 7th place in 2013, in Myanmar, bringing home only 29 gold, 36 silver, and 66 bronze, for a total of 101. Recently in 2015, in Singapore, it ranked back up to 6th. Our gold medal numbers are dropping since 2005, yet overall statistics and ranking remain an up-anddown zigzag. Not including the data from 2005-2015, the country was ranked 5th thrice (1989, 1999, and 2001), 4th three times (2003, 1879, 1997), 3rd six times (1977, 1981, 1985, 1987, 1993, and 1995), and 2nd twice (1983 and 1991). The Philippines ranks up and down in a rate that makes pride and indifference from Filipinos inconsistent. It is not an established power in the sports community—save for boxing or basketball, to which the country is known for—it is somewhat progressing and regressing game after game, the pace too steady in the middle line to elicit any noteworthy reaction from the people. The goal, which is building the foundation for pride to grow, remains miles away from accomplishment, yet the journey is not impossible. In a lighter note, in the last five SEA Games, the Philippines has consistently performed best in these five sports: athletics, boxing, billiards and snooker, basketball, and softball. These sports account for 67 of 173 gold medals, and 188 of 753 from 2007 to 2015. For now, that should be enough reason to feel secured. It may not be enough to eradicate indifference, but it is a statement of pride. With enough support from the government and the people, the journey could prove much shorter. And so we vie.

34 seconds, enough time for Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) warrior Rhonda “Rowdy” Rousey to beat-up and defend her Women’s Bantamweight championship belt against Brazilian fighter Bethe “Pitbull” Correia on the main event fight of the UFC 190 at the HSBC Arena Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, August 1.

bell rang all hell broke loose. Rousey came out on fire, throwing punches at Correia, she scrambled at first, hit the air, and land a few short shots. But then she went for her traditional hip-toss that made Correia backaway. That is when “Rowdy” settled for an accidental trip. With “Pitbull” off-balance along the fence Rousey started to fire punches like nuclear bombs on her opponents body and face. She missed more than she made, but those that got in forced the Brazilian to look for an escape hatch. Correia darted for an open air, but Rousey followed her with a knuckle-sandwich that landed in her left ear. It was enough to finish the fight, but Rousey still in heat followed up a quick left cross that turned out the lights of the Brazilian. “Rowdy” was about to punch Correia, to make sure that she was totally blacked-out, when the referee snatched her and instructed her to go to her corner.

Despite the wild threat from the home crowd, Rousey stood tall and walked proud with one intention on mind – defeat Correia. The two fighters have a little history of battles even outside the cage. During one of the pre-fight press conferences, Correia made a snide and insensitive suicide comment about Rousey’s father (a former wrestler who committed suicide due to depression after losing a world-title match) that made her upset.
