Pride and honor: Tigers wins 2nd runner-up title in Dancelebration ‘16 July 16—San Pedro College of Business Administration’s (SPCBA) Performing Arts (PA) Dance Troupe-Tigers proved their dancing prowess as they snatched the 2nd runner-up title in the De La Salle Dance Company-Contemporary’s 28th Dancelebration 2016. World Dancelebration 2016, hosted by the De La Salle Dance Company-Contemporary of De La Salle University-Taft (DLSU), is the longest running inter-school dance competition in Metro Manila where different dance groups from high schools, colleges, and universities gather not just to compete for different dancing titles, but also to share the stage and convey a common goal of fueling awareness and concern about timely and relevant issues, stories, and experiences, with this year’s theme “World”. Before the contest, SPCBA Tigers showed their determination as they were

The competition was divided into three categories: High School, CollegeContemporary, and College-Street. Eight dance groups competed in High School Category, three in College-Contemporary, and four in College-Street. Competing against universities like Adamson University (ADMU), University of the Philippines (UP)-Manila, and University of Santo Tomas (UST) for the college-street category, the Tigers Dance Troupe has taken the hearts of the judges and audience through their performance which conveyed an eyeopening and timely campaign against drug

Along with Dimagiba, a Marketing student, were his teammates May Custodio and Rheena Mae Floresca, Accountancy students; Kurt Miguel Abaño, Felix Bayanid Jr., Paulo Quintana, and Erico John Yambao, Marketing students; and Roselyn Kate Salcedo, John Bryan Seradilla, and John Patrick Trangia, Psychology, Information Technology (IT), and Computer Engineering (CoE) students, respectively. Together, they have brought pride and honor to the school.
“Nagpapasalamat kami sa mga professors, JBEA officers, sa aming adviser, Sir Mhon Brazas, kay coach Marlon, at syempre sa school na walang sawang sumuporta sa’min. Hindi kami lumaban dun sa competition as dancers, lumaban kami as preachers of God’s word through dance. Dun pa lang, victors na kami,” added Dimagiba upon winning the title. It is not only the SPCBA students who were amazed by how the Tigers performed. They took their dancing skills to the next level through competing against prominent schools in the Metro.

Santizo Senior High School (SHS) students were formally welcomed to SPCBA during their orientation on July 8, where they were briefed about all the essential information they needed to know for the duration of their stay in the academe. The orientation, held at Elmer A. Ching (EAC) hall, served to educate the students about SPCBA in general. One of its purposes is to prepare these students to adjust specifically to the SHS system, which is a new educational approach for the entire country after K-12 has taken effect. The program was spearheaded by Vernice Omagap, “I’m looking forward Guidance Counselor, together that through our partnership BY
with the help of Psychology students. SHS Principal, Dr. Elvira Aniciete, challenged the students to strive to be part of the SPCBA Academic Awardees. She also discussed the Grading System of K -12, which shall be the gauge of their academic performance. The orientation continued with the discussion of the rules and regulations being followed and observed in the school. The knowledge of which would be vital during their days as SPCBA students. The purpose of these rules is to maintain an organized social and educational institution for the promotion of common good and morality. It had been pointed out that both achieving
good grades and having good manners must be infused in the hearts and minds of the students. In addition, the Members of the Board of Trustees, faculty members and the School Administrators were also introduced, as well as the academic and non-academic organizations existing in the school. As an institution that values education, SPCBA can guarantee the students that they have been put to good hands. “SPCBA will assure them not only quality education,” Omagap said in a statement. “But also moral transformation, and readiness for tomorrow's challenges.”
SHS students were briefed about SPCBA during their first orientation facilitated by the guidance office, headed by Guidance Office’s Vernice Omagap and Peers.

According to the Public Order and Safety Office (POSO), the road widening of San Isidro Bridge, a project of Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) which started last June 14, will take about three months to be finished. This project is indeed beneficial to the general public – it will provide more space for more vehicles, thus, reducing the traffic jams and giving more convenience to all the commuters. However, the process to attain the said benefit comes with a period of inconvenience and annoyance. Among these problems include the time interval from the announcement of the closing of the bridge to the actual date of the project commencement. The public was only given a week’s notice to prepare for the change of routes, with those in the transportation industry being most affected. Also, the project was temporarily postponed due to the possibility of hitting an oil pipe, causing more and more people to ask; are the engineers assigned to do the blueprints of the project did not predict or foresee or validate the possibilities of such matters? Not to mention the timing of the project – which is undeniably the root of all the rage of the commuters – especially us students. The question goes like this: Is it the right time to proceed with the project, during rainy season, where more possible disturbances caused by heavy rain can occur? Thinking of it, why not start the project on a summer, when students are not yet attending school. The possible answers are (1) since last summer covered the election period, on a benefit of the doubt, the rage of the commuters will drawback to the administration of Cataquiz, that may affect her electoral campaign even though the project is organized by DPWH. And (2) maybe it is just how the schedule goes, and we cannot complain anything about it. Commuters – Everyday, different reactions from individuals who work in Manila were heard. They need to travel early in the morning to go to work. Imagine the disturbance and the waste of their time when the buses need to pass at the detour scheme that causes delay. Furthermore, going home is very inconvenient since some commuters were dropped before the bridge and they are forced to walk under the scorching heat just to reach their destinations. Drivers – The commencement of the project brought more frequent traffic jams. And aside the commuters, the bus, jeepney, and tricycle drivers were also affected of the road-widening. How? Just think of the fact that the traffic increases the cost of their fuel consumption while it also lessens the revenue of hard working drivers. For the department in charge of this project, the least thing you can do is respect the affected community. The economy is slowing. The community will appreciate the long-term benefits of the road widening, but the unnecessary delays in the project—to which we still do not know who to blame for—could have been avoided with better management and planning. We want a response. The economy runs on time and money. Both resources are being used up and wasted the longer the project goes.

Achievement is a desire that is common to every person, regardless of their circumstance or privileges. It leads to selfactualization, which is the cherry-on-top on anyone’s life. The desire for it influences our decisions and rationale, from the moment of its realization to its attainment. It forms many of the words written in biographies. But the reward is nothing compared to the journey. The reward is only the tip of the iceberg. When talking about Shaun Erickson Greganda’s journey to his achievement, it will ultimately lead to his days as an Accountancy student in SPCBA. Greganda had admitted that he used to be a gamer in his early college years. It had been dividing his time that he could have allotted for studying or being with friends and family. When he reached his fourth year in college, he realized that he needed to step up his game, even if he had to give up playing. He was to graduate in a year and he had a board exam to take. He had to do something. He had said that what is taught in school should never be considered enough. There has to be self-input, meaning that a student must exert effort to learn beyond what is available in the classroom. And this is exactly what Greganda had done. He dedicated himself to hours of studying for something he knew he would not be graded for in school. “Mag-aral ka kasi gusto mo matuto,” he stated. “Maling mindset yung mag-aaral ako para mataas ang grade at para magtop sa klase.” This is his secret to success. And the fruits of his hard work were sweet. Greganda ranked 21st in the May 2016 Certified Public Accountant (CPA) Board Examination, with 2,967 passers out of 6,925 examinees. He had a general average of 88.17—just a few decimals away from the others in ranks above him. He scored 88 in Financial Accounting and Reporting, 92 in
Advanced Financial Accounting and Reporting, 88 in Management Advisory Services, 88 in Auditing, 83 in Taxation, and 90 in Regulatory Framework for Business Transaction. This SPCBA graduate managed to outrank other examinees from well-known universities in the country. Because of that reason, he had mentioned that every SPCBAnian should not be intimidated by the others that came from these universities, for ultimately, the factor that determines one’s success is not solely from the school, but from what can be found from within oneself. “Work hard in silence, let success be your noise,” Greganda said, advising every CPA hopeful. He stressed that they should not be discouraged from trying again if they failed to pass the board exam on the first or even the second try. Failing does not block the path to success. “Tiwala ka lang sa timing ni Lord,” he added. “Kapag bumagsak ka, ipahinga mo lang ‘yan, pero ‘wag ka susuko.” Greganda has reached a milestone in his life, achieving greatly at something that so many people dream about. But dreams will remain dreams unless something is done to make them a reality. For Greganda, that reality was achieved by hard work and dedication, in the right mindset. But during their journey, he reminded every dreamer that there are other things that they should give their attention to. “’Wag mo kalimutan si Lord, pamilya mo, at mga kaibigan,” he said. Journeys are not meant to be taken alone and these are the people that you walk with in your journey. Shaun Erickson Greganda, CPA said in conclusion that “life is more than the CPA title.”

DEAD MAN TELLS NO TALE The occurrence of illegal drug use in the country is unfolding everyday and we are reeling not just on the number of dealers and users who surrendered, but with the increasing number of those being killed in drug busts by police and these salvaged by unknown gun for hire. Months ago before the election, President Rodrigo Duterte promised that once he is elected as the president of the country, he will fight against the ‘cancers of society’—crime and corruption. He firmly stated that he will eradicate those within six months after he becomes the president. Filipinos put their hopes on Duterte as evident in his significant “lamang” in the presidential race. In his one-month post as the President of the Republic, the recorded death toll of suspected drug dealers and users made an all-time high of 80 deaths and is still increasing as time passes by. Take note, it is just a month after he was elected as the president. He still has so much time to do what he has promised the nation. But the thing is, flashing reports about suspected drug dealers and users being killed in police buy-bust operations received various responses. Some people favored what Duterte has done, but it is inevitable that there are always people who are against it. According to the law, the only time the police must defend themselves is when the suspect openly fights against the authorities using weapons. In every single death that has been reported, the police claims that it is self-defense or that the persons who were killed fired first. The alarming increase in the number of killings alerted the Commission on Human Rights (CHR). Stating the obvious, what happened to due process? What if some of the people killed were not really drug personnel? What if they were just framed up and innocent (given the benefit of the doubt)? How can they get back the life that was taken by a single bullet? There are so many questions that were left unanswered.

An open letter to the new administration
15
Change is coming or better yet, change has come. At the onset of President Duterte’s Administration, he had been vocal as to the qualifications of his incoming department secretaries, under-secretaries, commissioners and other major officers: they have to be knowledgeable, committed to work, responsible, has experience, and one thing that most citizens raised an eyebrow about — the president must know them personally. According to one of his recent interviews, the reason behind it is not “kumpare system” but he placed those people because he knew that they are the most qualified for the job. Most people challenged the way Duterte had chosen, but who are we to question it, yet? Starting July 1, 2016 they had seated on their respective posts, they are going to face problems, old and new, and will find ways toa devise permanent solutions about it. What we could do in the mean time is to pray for the betterment of the country, be advocates of change and watchdog for any irregularities. We at The Sphere wrote these open letters for the new administration, it may be simple but it speaks of the true concerns especially of the youth. Hopefully these would not be disregarded.

A simple story, there’s a man that was so strict in all things. He wants this, he wants that. This man also likes to find the mistakes of others. But when he tried to correct the errors of others, he failed. His actions only made things worse. This story communicates that we should not focus on the mistakes of others or blame them for it. We may not know the whole story. Give them an opportunity to change for the better and you focus on becoming a better person.
Simon Rosellon
There was a guy who has a humble personality and a pure heart. He always finds ways to help others. In fact, he changed for the better. You know why? He used to be addicted to different vices, but he searched for meaning and found it. He started to renew himself, encouraging the youth to begin a new life. In this story, you can see that change is not a rain that will drop from heaven nor is it unexpected, but it is a treasure that you need to take the initiative to find for. These are two kinds of people showing that they are different. They have their own way of dealing with change; it can be for the better or for worst. Is it better to boast about things that you don’t deserve, or remain humble? You can make a difference in the world without having to step on anybody. There is always a right way. Always “I can”. If you lose your hope in the initial steps to change, then there is no way for you to reach your goal. Remember, if the world cannot change for you, then let yourself change the world.

Though, not much thought or attention has been given to this act in the modern Filipino culture; Filipinos tend to be more excited about viewing men fight in the ring, shoot balls in baskets, or hit balls back to the opponent’s court. There is nothing wrong with supporting the practice of these sports, but with the spotlight focused on them alone, others remain in the dark, waiting for the same recognition and patronization. Fencing is one of these sports that had not managed to grab mainstream attention in our country. What is fencing? It is the art of fighting with swords, just like boxing is the art of fighting with fists. Based on the traditional skills of swordsmanship, fencing is an organized sport in which two competitors fight using ‘rapier-style’ swords, gaining points by making contact with their opponent. There are three forms of fencing, each involving different weapons, rules, and objectives. The first one is foil, where a player uses a light thrusting weapon. In foil fencing, hits are scored only at the point of the sword. The target is limited to the torso, back, neck, and groin, but not arms or legs. Épée, the second one, is a thrusting weapon like foil, but heavier. The metal guard is larger because it must protect the sword arm and hand from hits. The target is the entire body, from head to toe. Whoever hits first is awarded the touch. The third one is sabre, which is a light cutting and thrusting weapon that targets the entire body above the waist, except the weapon hand. In sabre fighting, touches may be scored with both edges of the blade, including the point. A player can choose which fighting style he wishes to master.
Common misconceptions It can be said that what most people know about the sport is from its portrayal in pop culture. That is, it involves people dressed in white padded suits who poke each other with thin swords, somehow winning if one of them hits the other in what one might consider a critical blow if it were a real sword fight. Moreover, pop culture has created the misconception that it is a luxurious sport that is often associated by the rich, just like golf, polo, or horseback riding. For example: Fencing being the sport of Lee Min Ho from the Korean drama Boys Over Flowers and Makaulay Culkin from Richie Rich. You only need to invest in a
sword, a jacket, and a helmet. People often think of the sport as dangerous, being all about attacking. That is hardly the case at all. It is not merely attacking, for it involves careful precision and strategic thinking. In fencing, you always have to be two steps ahead of your opponent. The sport grew out of dueling, where sword fighters tried to injure or kill each other. The idea of fencing is not to injure but to “hit” or pretend to wound the opponent and avoid being hit. The weapons used in fencing have blunt tips and metal hand guards, which are much lighter in weight than fighting swords. The action, which is fast and controlled, takes place on a narrow fencing strip. Contrary to popular belief, fencing is one of the safest sports to play. Players are protected with a mask, trousers, jacket and gloves. Hard hitting and rough play are useless against the rules of the game. Anyone making heavy movements would be nothing against a good fencer. Fencing entails speed of hand and skillful footwork, not brute force. Fencing in the Philippine setting The sport was said to be introduced to the country during the Spanish colonial era. Personalities such as Jose Rizal, Juan Luna, and Gregorio Luna were known to have been fencers. Lessons are also made available locally, for anyone who is interested to learn the art of fencing. Organizations like Vicious Braniac Fencing and Ezkrima make the sport accessible to kids, teens, and adults. Their aim is to introduce the sport all over the country. Fencing is governed by the Philippine Fencing Association (PFA), which is recognized by the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) as one of its National Sports Association members. The country also dominated in fencing in the last Southeast Asian Games (SEA), winning four silver and two bronze medals. Though, not many Filipinos know about this fact, much less see this as a cause for nationwide celebration unlike what they do when Gilas Pilipinas, Manny Pacquiao, or Azkals manage to take home gold. Filipino fencers deserve the same love as these personalities receive, win or lose. There is more to the sword than just a violent weapon. For Filipino fencers, they are instruments that make them the athletes that the Philippines can be proud of, wherever they are in the world. The sword is their ticket to bringing honor and glory to the country they proudly represent.

Notable athletes will not be participating in 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, following the increasing number of illnesses caused by the Zika virus in Brazil. Zika is a mosquito-borne virus that has been found to cause underdeveloped brains of babies born to women infected by the virus while on the stage of pregnancy. It is also potentially linked to neurological disorders in some infected children and adults. Famous athletes that decided not to play include Jason Day, the halfAustralian and half-Filipino No. 1-ranked golfer in the world, and American soccer player star Hope Solo. Some of the star players of USA's Basketball Team including LeBron James opt not to play for the
Olympics due to the outbreak. According to Day, his concern was about the possible transmission of the Zika virus and the potential risks that it may transmit to his wife’s future pregnancies and to future members of his family. Canadian doctor and professor Amir Attaran believes that Rio Olympics must be postponed or moved since he mentioned that Rio de Janeiro’s 26,000 suspected Zika cases are higher than anywhere else in Brazil, and its Zika incidence rate—157 per 100,000 people—is the fourth worst in the world. Indeed, the outbreak has affected the Rio 2016 since it heightened the risks of the athletes' health condition and shortened the excitement of the fans that will not be able to see their favorite athletes play for the Olympics.

Last July 5 and 6, Gilas Pilipinas showed off their ability to rise up against adversity and time, after competing in the Fédération Internationale de Basketball (FIBA) Olympic Qualifying Tournament (OQT) held at SM Mall of Asia (MOA). The preparation of Gilas was a big game changer, allowing them to surprise the competing teams. Before FIBA OQT started, the team went through a lot of intense trainings and conditioning. His experience in major basketball competitions opened a window for the Gilas players to have an international exposure through game conditionings with other countries. On the day of the match, the spirit and passion portrayed by the basketball team filled the atmosphere of the arena. Home court advantage also made the team play harder. We all know how enthusiastic the Filipinos are in basketball and having the crowd on your side was definitely a plus. Psychologically speaking, the encouragement of the fans greatly affected the setting of the game. Canada and New Zealand experienced frustration leading to multiple bad play upon hearing the audience cheer for Gilas, I mean who would not be affected by it? the two teams were composed of more experienced players, including professional National Basketball Association (NBA) players like Boris Diaw—Utah Jazz, Nicholas Batum—Charlotte Hornets, Tony Parker—San Antonio Spurs, who undergo extensive training everyday and has more experienced coaching staff. Nevertheless, I am proud of Gilas because they put up a good fight making sure that the other teams work harder just to defeat them. NBA superstar Tony Parker, playing for Team France, admitted in an interview that they had a hard time defeating Gilas since it has a variety of players with qualities they did not expect and prepared for. It has been decades since a Filipino basketball team competed in Olympics, but with the quality of players our country is producing—a rare strand of basketball warriors with “puso”, I know that the time will come and it will be sooner than later.
