The archipelago of Azores is located in the North Atlantic, far from the nearest continents (1,500 km from Europe and approximately 3,900 km from America). The islands of the Azores are divided into three groups based on their proximity to one another: the Western Group (Flores and Corvo); the Central Group (Terceira, Graciosa, São Jorge, Pico and Faial) and the Eastern Group (São Miguel and Santa Maria). 0

The island of São Miguel is the largest of the archipelago, with an area of 746.82 km2 and 138.092 inhabitants (2001), the majority of whom live in or around the biggest city of the island, Ponta Delgada. Known as the Green Island, São Miguel offers fabulous natural landscapes, particularly around the great lakes of Sete Cidades, Fogo and Furnas, and in its coastal areas such as the islet of Vila Franca do Campo. The municipalities of Nordeste and Povoação, in the extreme eastern part of the island of São Miguel, cover a total area of 211.30 km2 and have a low population density. Both have stunning scenery and are ideal places to enjoy nature tourism. The Special Protection Area (SPA) of Pico da Vara/Ribeira do Guilherme, located in the region, is the only place in the world where one can see the mysterious Azores Bullfinch, “Priolo” in Portuguese (Pyrrhula murina). The climate is temperate and mild with small daily oscillations in temperatures, with means around 10 ºC and 14 ºC in the winter and 22 ºC - 25 ºC in the summer.
Nordeste The municipality of Nordeste, as the name suggests, is located in the northeastern coast of São Miguel. The many mountains and rivers of this municipality offer the perfect conditions for those looking for nature tourism. It is considered one of the most verdant municipalities of the Azores and contains stunning landscapes and gardens of great beauty. Pico da Vara Mountain, on the border between Nordeste and Povoação municipalities, is the highest peak of São Miguel (1,105 m), giving its name to the SPA in which it’s integrated: Pico da Vara/Ribeira do Guilherme. 5
Povoação Povoação, in the southeastearn part of São Miguel, is described as the place where the first settlers of the island disembarked, in the late 1440’s. The villages of this municipality are surrounded by steep mountains, inter-spaced by deep valleys opening to the sea or, in other places, closing inland, forming a unique landscape. The volcanic complex of Furnas is also located in this municipality. Secondary volcanism manifestations can be observed near the Furnas Lake, where the hot water of the boilers is traditionally used for cooking, as well as in the centre of the village in the natural hot springs of the Terra Nostra Park and D. Beija Pool, where you can enjoy a nice hot bath.

2. Background In geological terms, the area covered by Nordeste and Povoação is formed by three distinct volcanic complexes: • The volcanic complex of Nordeste, which extends from Algarvia to Faial da Terra and corresponds to the oldest part of the island of São Miguel, whose volcanic activity started about 4 million years ago, and it is considered extinct. This is an area composed exclusively of basaltic fissural volcanism, where some small volcanic cones are located. • Also extinct, the volcano of Povoação corresponds to a huge silicic volcano with a caldera, with about 6.4 km in diameter and nowadays opened to the south. The caldera displays the famous “7 lombas da Povoação” (7 hills), carved in volcanic rocks called ignimbrite and popularly known as “stone of Lomba”. • Younger and with less than 1 million years, the Furnas volcano
7
is also a silicic polygenetic volcano, which is truncated at the top with a set of summit calderas complex, with 8 x 5.6 km diameter. The caldera includes a lake and several fumarolic fields (in the parish, near to the lake and along the valley of Ribeira Quente stream), testimony of the remnant secondary volcanism of this dormant but active volcano. The last eruption of the Furnas volcano dates back to the year of 1630. In biogeographical terms, the Azores is included in the Macaronesia region, which also includes the archipelagos of Madeira, the Canary islands and Cape Verde. This region is formed by islands that were never connected to the continents and therefore the species found here colonized the islands either by air or by sea. Consequently, these islands have a low diversity of species but a high percentage of endemics making their flora and fauna highly valuable. The Laurel Forest is particularly noteworthy. During the Tertiary Period, this forest covered the Mediterranean region but disappeared almost entirely from the continent after the last ice age. Remnants are found in the archipelagos of Madeira, the Canary islands and in the Azores. The Azores were first populated between 1430 and 1943, the island of Santa Maria being the first to be settled. Around 1944, the settlement of the island of São Miguel began, in what is now the Povoação Village. This event is commemorated by a monument dedicated to the first settlers:
“Arriving here on the islands, the new discoverers made land at the place now called Povoação Velha […] and, disembarked between two rivers of clear, sweet, cold water (Ribeira de Além and Ribeira de Pelames) between rocks and high lands (Morro de Santa Bárbara and Lomba dos Pós) covered with thick groves of juniperus, laurel, plum, faya, and others […]” 8
On arrival, the first settlers began to cut down trees for wood and to clear land for cultivation, resulting in a significant loss of the native plant species and in the degradation of the remaining vegetation. The “Priolo” was described by Gaspar Frutuoso (1591) in “Saudades da Terra” as a bird found only on the island of São Miguel, though there was no mention of its distribution. In the 19th century, oranges were the main product of the southern coast of the island of São Miguel and farmers saw the flowers of this tree being ‘devoured’ by this bird. A reward was introduced for each head of a “Priolo” presented to the Agricultural Services. Then collectors arrived, attracted by this enigmatic bird and looking to collect specimens for museums. This was how naturalists first gathered information about the distribution, behaviour and classification of this species. Godman (1866) was the first to correctly classify this species as Pyrrhula murina. He also reported that, although the birds invaded the orchards when the orange trees were flowering, they were predominantly birds of the mountains. As the number of settlers increased, so did the demand for resources and, consequently, the degradation of native vegetation. This lead to serious problems of soil erosion which had to be quickly remedied. In the middle of the 20th century, the solution found was to plant species of rapid growth, in this case Cryptomeria japonica. Together with the over exploitation of the natural vegetation of the Azores another phenomenon arose and would reveal itself as the greatest threat yet to the native vegetation of the Azores (and therefore for the “Priolo”): the introduction of exotic invasive species. The new settlers and later the emigrants brought new plant species to the island for agricultural purposes and as ornamental plants also. Some of these found the climate of the Azores ideal and soon began to take over areas of degraded natural forest making its auto-regeneration almost impossible. Currently, this is the greatest problem to the conservation of the “Priolo” and the Laurel Forest in the area of the SPA Pico da Vara/Ribeira do Guilherme. However, attempts have been made to eradicate the exotic invasive species and 9
recover the habitat of the “Priolo”. It is our primary responsibility and that of all visitors of this protected area, to ensure the conservation of the natural habitats and the species that are found there. Therefore, we ask that you follow the Code of Conduct for Visitors.
Code of conduct Do not drop litter. Place it in the appropriate bins. Do not disturb the animals nor destroy nests, even when empty. Do not destroy nor collect plant species or geological formations. Do not camp nor light fires. Do not practice sports that may cause pollution or disturbance. Follow the trails and paths indicated to avoid trampling the vegetation. Drive only where permitted and park in appropriate areas. Do not assist in the introduction of exotic or unusual plants or animals. (Adaptation from SRAM (2004) Áreas Ambientais dos Açores)

3. Ecological importance The SPA Pico da Vara/Ribeira do Guilherme is located within the São Miguel Island Natural Park and is a protected area designated for the conservation of the “Priolo” and its habitat, the Laurel Forest of Azores. This area covers almost half of the municipalities of Nordeste and Povoação, located on the eastern side of the island. This Natural Park includes other protected areas within the municipalities of Nordeste and Povoação, which are of great importance to the conservation of unique habitats.

The natural habitats of the Azores, such as the Laurel Forest and the Peatlands of Planalto dos Graminhais, are ecosystems rich in native and endemic species that are unique and only found in these areas. The “Priolo” of the high altitude Laurel Forest deserves special mention, since it can only be found in the SPA Pico da Vara/Ribeira do Guilherme. There are endemic plants in here too, such as the Azorean Plum, once considered extinct, but of which 400 specimens were recently located in the SPA. These natural habitats are also highly valuable for the human population, improving air quality, carbon fixation, quantity and quality of water, attracting visitors and tourists, and also providing protection against floods and landslides.

Threats to Biodiversity The ecosystems and habitats of the SPA are under serious threat due to the rapid expansion of exotic invasive plants. These species, brought to the island for various reasons (often as ornamental species), contributed to the degradation of natural habitats of the SPA. Species such as the Yellow Ginger-lilly, the Lilly-of-the-valley Tree, the Australian Cheesewood, the Chilean Rhubarb and the Australian Blackwood can be seen in abundance in the protected area and threaten its biodiversity. A great effort from several organizations has been made for the adequate management of these habitats, so that they can achieve a healthy conservation status.

4. Conservation Several conservation projects aiming to protect the population of “Priolo” and its habitat, have already been carried out in the SPA Pico da Vara/Ribeira do Guilherme, with funds from the EU LIFE programme: LIFE “Priolo Conservation” (1994-1996); LIFE “Study and Conservation of the Natural Patrimony of the Azores” (1997-2000); LIFE “Priolo” (2003-2008); LIFE “Sustainable Laurel Forest” (2009-2012). The LIFE “Sustainable Laurel Forest” project was developed to continue the work initiated by the LIFE “Priolo” project with the general aim of preserving the Laurel Forest, by recovering and defining the best way to preserve it. The areas targeted by the LIFE “Sustainable Laurel Forest” project were chosen to halt the degradation process of the natural habitats of the SPA Pico da Vara/Ribeira do Guilherme. The three main habitats of this area are the Macaronesian Laurel Forest, the Macaronesian endemic heaths and the Peatlands of the Planalto dos Graminhais.
Conservation actions visible in the SPA Pico da Vara/ Ribeira do Guilherme Restoration of an area of Cryptomeria plantation The conversion of around 10 ha of Cryptomeria forestry plantation back to natural forest was an experimental action with no precedents in the region. More than 30,000 plants of 11 different native species were planted, primarily those with an important role in the diet of 15
the “Priolo” (Azorean Blueberry, Azorean Cherry and Azorean Holly). In addition to increasing the area of Laurel Forest habitat and food availability for the “Priolo”, this action was a practical demonstration of the possibilities and problems that arise in the process of restoring degraded forest areas.
Clearing of exotic plants in the area of the viewpoint of Serra da Tronqueira The area of forest visible from the viewpoint of Serra da Tronqueira has the largest pocket of native forest in São Miguel. Over recent decades, this area has been progressively taken over by invasive plant species, such as the Yellow Ginger-lilly and the Lilly-of-the-valley Tree. The actions of the LIFE “Sustainable Laurel Forest” project allowed the recovery of a significant area of Laurel Forest by the removal of these exotic invasive species. Restoration of the Garden of Endemic Plants of the Recreational Forest Reserve of Cancela do Cinzeiro In the Recreational Forest Reserve of Cancela do Cinzeiro (managed by the Nordeste Forestry Service), one can find a Garden of Endemic Plants with a circular walking trail. Visitors can easily see the diversity 16
of species of the Azorean Laurel Forest, such as the Azorean Holly, Azorean Juniper, Azorean Laurel, Cape Myrtle, Azorean Cherry, Azorean Blueberry and Hawkbit. Restoration of the Laurel Forest at Pico Bartolomeu A continued intervention is necessary in areas of Laurel Forest, including newly recovered areas in order to reduce the pressure from invasive exotics. The removal of the invasive Australian Cheesewood, Australian Blackwood and Chilean Rhubarb will complement the eradication of Yellow Ginger-lilly and Lilly-of-the-valley Tree, carried out by the LIFE “Priolo” project. The plantation of native species will then conclude the recovery of the area. Conservation of the Peatlands of the Planalto dos Graminhais The Peatlands are a priority habitat because, in addition to its rarity and biodiversity, they are fundamental for guaranteeing the water resources of the region. The Peatlands extend over around 100 ha of the Planalto dos Graminhais, but some areas are already degraded by exotic invasive species, namely Chilean Rhubarb, Lilly-of-the-valley Tree and the Tree Fern. For the municipalities of Nordeste and Povoação, the conservation of this habitat is vital for the quality of life of the population, since it guarantees the quality and quantity of water in this area. Therefore, invasive species are being eradicated and native plants encouraged, improving the quality of the habitat and ensuring its effective ecological function. 17
Plant Nursery and Greenhouse for the production of Endemic Plants The production of native plants is fundamental to the restoration and extension of areas of priority habitats. In the 1990’s, DRRF (Regional Management of Forests), through the Forestry Services of Nordeste, started the production of endemic woody species. Trial and improvement of the infrastructures allowed the increase in production and in the quality of the species produced. Near the headquarters of the Services, the plant nursery which is included in the Recreational Forest Reserve of Nordeste can be visited, as well as the plant nurseries of the Recreational Forest Reserve of Furnas. With respect to biodiversity, the plants produced are later used in reforestation projects, in management plans for watersheds and in road embankments, among others. As part of the LIFE “Sustainable Laurel Forest” project, a plant nursery and greenhouse was built, in the village of Povoação, to produce thousands of endemic plant specimens to be used in the restoration of the forest, such as the Azorean Holly, Azorean Cherry, Azorean Blueberry, Azorean Laurel, Picconia azorica, Faya Tree, Azorean Heather, Buckthorn and Azorean Laurustinus. Interpretation Centre of Priolo The Interpretation Centre of Priolo was created as part of the LIFE “Priolo” project; as a centre for environmental education located within the Recreational Forest Reserve of Cancela do Cinzeiro (Pedreira). It acts as a point of orientation for visitors to the SPA Pico da Vara/ Ribeira do Guilherme, increasing the knowledge and awareness of
18
locals and visitors about the “Priolo” and its natural habitat. This Centre can be visited all year long, for futher information please visit page centropriolo. spea.pt.

Other Conservation Actions in the Lands of “Priolo
Environmental Requalification of the River Basin of the Furnas Lake The Management Plan for the River Basin of the Furnas Lake (POBHLF) is a management tool for the territory with the major goal of restoring the water quality of the Furnas Lake. It has several intervention actions which aim, not only to reduce the tributary loads to the lake, but also to increase the biodiversity, to contribute to the sustainable income, to diversify and strengthen local economy, to promote local values and to minimize geotechnical risks. These objectives are achieved by promoting nature tourism through economically sustainable activities that return income revenue for local communities, contributing also to raise the value and awareness on the natural resources, such as the Furnas Lake. To accomplish these goals, the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and the Sea through the Environmental Management and Nature Conservation Society – Azorina SA, has been developing partnerships with several institutions (Military Zone of Azores, Nurseries of Lagoa Seca of the Regional Directorate for Agricultural Development, University of Azores, PT Azores and Foundation PT, SATA, among others) in order to undertake small projects like the following:
20
Prevent Soil Erosion The erosion lines are “tears” in pastures where the soil is eroded by the action of the water that flows to the Furnas Lake, leading to its eutrophication. After the removal of the invasive plant species, the introduction of native plant species in these areas will support the soil with its roots, thus reducing erosion. These plantations are efficient seed dispersion nucleus for native species which were extinct in these areas. Natural based engineering structures are applied to dissipate water velocity and disperse it, thus avoiding its concentration. These are built using wood from the removed invasive plants and then strengthened with barriers of reeds that will stay in place after the wood rots. Recovery of an Old Orchard in Furnas The Lands of “Priolo”, particularly Furnas, were once an important area for the production of fruit. However, few are the orchards that still remain. The recovery of an old orchard in Furnas is one of the projects created to promote local values. This will be a place that locals and tourists can visit and where they can get to know a little more about this period in the history of Furnas, when these cultures thrived. It aims to promote not only traditional fruit production but also local gastronomy and the particular use of geothermic heat to cook. Azorean Blueberry Orchards The creation of orchards of Azorean Blueberry (Vaccinium cylindraceum) aims to study the economic viability of the production of endemic blueberries. Two orchards were planted, one in a good quality soil and another in a lower quality soil in order to compare different individuals and determine which ones are most productive. Each one had 800 plants with a wide genetic biodiversity and are managed to grow this fruit for commercialization. From this orchard, a first selection of productive plants will be carried out and will be used for genetic improvement of a once economic relevant fruit for the local gastronomy (jam and liquors). 21
5. Flora The SPA Pico da Vara/Ribeira do Guilherme contains around 15% of all plant species found in Azores archipelago. However, in terms of endemics its value is much greater, as it includes almost half (44%) of the species endemic to the Azores. The majority of these endemic species can be found in the high altitude Laurel Forest, particularly in restored areas free from invasive exotic plants. The Peatlands of the Planalto dos Graminhais also contain a high number of endemic species, as do areas that have only recently been invaded and still retain some native and endemic species.

6. Fauna The archipelago of the Azores, being far from the mainland of any continent, does not have a large number of species. However, because of its isolation, the existing species are in many cases endemic to the islands. The most important group of the archipelago are the birds, of which two are endemic to the Azores: the Azores Bullfinch, or “Priolo”, in Portuguese, (Pyrrhula murina) and Monteiro’s Stormpetrel (Oceanodroma monteiroi). There is also a bird species endemic to Macaronesia region - the Canary, and several other subspecies endemic to the Azores. The majority of mammals and reptiles found on the islands were introduced, with the exception of the Azorean Noctule bat which is the only endemic mammal.
The “Priolo” The “Priolo” is a species of bird endemic to the island of São Miguel. More specifically, its distribution is limited to the mountainous area in the east of the island in the municipalities of Nordeste and Povoação - the SPA Pico da Vara/Ribeira do Guilherme. The current population is estimated to be around 500-800 pairs and is restricted to the remaining fragments of the native vegetation of the Azores. 35
It is a small, plump bird measuring from 15 to 17 cm and weighing around 30 g. The head, wings and tail are black; the mid-wing bar and upper tail are tinged brown. The sexes are identical. However, the juveniles differ from the adults in the colour of the head that is brown in juveniles and black in the adults. The change in head coloration occurs around October and in November all juveniles resemble the adults. During the 19th century, this bird was considered a pest of orange trees as it ate the flowers of what was then an economically important product. Having almost reached extinction, it became a protected species, and is now classified as Endangered by BirdLife International and in the Red Book of Vertebrates of Portugal. This special bird breeds in the Laurel Forest from June to the end of August. In the summer, it feeds mainly in open areas and in winter it can be found in the native high altitude forest. Generally, it feeds on seeds, flower buds and ferns. Currently, the greatest threat to the conservation of “Priolo is the degradation of its habitat by the advance of several exotic invasive species. Consequently, several projects were carried out and others are being developed to restore the Laurel Forest, thus ensuring the conservation of this species.

7. Geotourism
The Azores archipelago has a rich and vast geodiversity, and an important geological heritage composed by several sites of scientific, educational and touristic interests. Volcanoes, calderas, lakes, lava fields, fumaroles, hot springs and thermal waters, volcanic caves, “fajĂŁsâ€?, fault scarps and marine fossil deposits, among many others, are characteristic elements of the Azorean geological heritage. The Azores Geopark is an area with a well defined territorial expression and boundaries, where the existence of an exceptional Geological Heritage is the basis for a strategy that promotes the well-being of the population while maintaining the respect for the environment.
51
Given the insular nature of the region, the Azores Geopark is supported on a geosites network dispersed by the nine islands and the surrounding seafloor, i) that ensures the representativeness of the geodiversity that characterizes the Azorean territory, ii) that reflects its geological and eruptive histories, iii) with common conservation and promotion strategies, and iii) based on a decentralized management structure with support in all the islands. Learn more about the Azores Geopark in www.azoresgeopark.com.
Geosites The main geosites identified in the Lands of “Priolo” are: Furnas volcano caldera
SMG 1
Furnas volcano is a silicic polygenetic volcano with a summit calderas complex, the older with 8 x 5.6 km diameter and aged about 34,000 years. The geodiversity associated includes a volcanic lake, domes and tuff rings, and a diversified hydrothermal system, with fumaroles, thermal and mineral waters. Faial da Terra and Fajã do Calhau Valley
SMG 10
The Faial da Terra fluvial valley establishes the boundary between the basaltic fissural volcanism of Nordeste complex (east, with dykes and scoria deposits) and the trachytic rocks of Povoação’s polygenetic volcano (west, with domes and pumice deposits). “Fajã do Calhau” is the major slope deposit of the island. Povoação volcano caldera
SMG 11
Povoação volcano is a silicic polygenetic volcano with semicircular shaped caldera, open to south. Intracaldera there are some scoria cones and domes. Most part of the caldera is covered by ignimbrite, associated with the formation of the caldera of the Furnas volcano, which is contiguous. 52
Pico da Vara and Planalto dos Graminhais
SMG 17
Pico da Vara, the highest point of São Miguel island (1,105 m), with a mountain character cut by deep ravines, where torrential and permanent streams run. The Planalto dos Graminhais develops along the northern edge of the Povoação volcano caldera, between 900 and 950 m in altitude. Salto da Farinha
SMG 22
Salto da Farinha corresponds to a waterfall, with about 40 meters high, which marks the lower and middle sections of the Ribeira das Coelhas stream. At the top, it displays a thick basaltic lava flow, at the base there is a puddle and at the mouth of the stream there is a pebble beach. In the Salto da Farinha’s viewpoint a spheroidal jointing of the basalt is disposed, testimony of its antiquity and, in general, of the geological formations of the eastern part of the island. Ribeira Quente valley
SMG 24
The Ribeira Quente stream springs in the caldera of the Furnas volcano and has several affluents of thermal and mineral waters that drain out on the south coast of the island, in the village of Ribeira Quente. Embedded in this valley are fumaroles and springs of ferreous rich-waters, thermal and gaseous carbonic. The slopes overlooking the village scarred ancient mass movements and floods.

8. Walking trails For centuries the easiest way to get somewhere in Azores was by sea, even between places on the same island: in fact, there were few tracks suitable for carriages or oxcarts. Generally, people would travel about their daily business on tracks accompanied by horses, donkeys or mules. These old tracks were also used to take cattle to and from the pastures, to attend neighbouring village parties and to take agricultural products, fish, coal and other products to trade. Anything larger would go by sea. This network, composed of old tracks, has been renovated and now provides an excellent way in which to enjoy the scenery of the Azores. All of these trails pass through areas of exceptional beauty, connecting almost all corners of each of the islands, some on the coast and others in the mountains. The trails of the Azores are a network of walks defined by the Regional Government of the Azores to ensure the safety and enjoyment of hikers. All the approved trails are sign-posted, using the following signs:

Safety and ethics Although the islands are small, walking on the trails is not free from the risks of a fall or of bad weather. Before anything else, check the trails website www.trails-azores. com, because some trails may be temporarily closed. Always check the weather forecast before starting a walk. Inform someone before you leave, where you are heading and when you plan to return. Check that you have the correct equipment and sufficient provisions: depending on the season you may need a raincoat, hat, sun cream, and always carry water cans and perhaps some food e.g. fruit. Sturdy footwear is highly recommended. Do not take short cuts, keep to the marked path. Do not over-estimate your fitness: the times indicated for each
56
walk are based on average values for an uninterrupted walk. Read the map carefully and pay attention to the additional information (gradient, length, degree of difficulty), adjust the time to your fitness. You have all the time in the world! Carry any rubbish with you and dispose it off correctly, and not in the trail. Do not collect geological or botanical samples, and do not pick fruit from the orchards. Do not disturb the cattle. Close any gates you have opened. In most cases these are used to keep the cattle in the pastures and so are indispensable. Greet any locals you meet while passing by. Everyone appreciates a pleasant hello and a little conversation. Adapted from www.trails-azores.com

9. Birdwatching Birdwatching is increasing in popularity worldwide because it offers a healthy and recreational activity, bringing people into contact with nature. The Azores are an exceptional place for sightings of marine birds and of rare and accidental species originating from America that are seen during migration and also to see unique endemic species, in particular, the “Priolo. Because birds are one of the main indicators of the health of many ecosystems, birdwatching and the exchange of information among observers (even within amateurs), provides information on the habitats and conservation status of its bird life. You can register your sightings on the databases PortugalAves, www. worldbirds.org/v3/portugal.php and http://azores.avesdeportugal. info/
73
Potential for Birdwatching in the area In the case of the SPA Pico da Vara/Ribeira do Guilherme, the “Priolo” (Pyrrhula murina) is the target species for most birdwatchers, since this is the only place where it can be seen in the world. In addition to the “Priolo”, there are several birds typical of the region, worth to look out for. Especially, Chaffinch (Fringilla coelebs moreletti), Grey Wagtail (Motacilla cinerea patriciae), European Robin (Erithacus rubecula), Goldcrest (Regulus regulus azoricus), Canary (Serinus canaria), Wood Pigeon (Columba palumbus azorica), Common Buzzard (Buteo buteo rothschildi), Long-eared Owl (Asio otus otus) and Woodcock (Scolopax rusticola). Most of these birds are easily observed. However, there are some aspects that can make bird identification more difficult, such as: the behaviour of the birds, especially of those which are more cautious; the local conditions may difficult to see and hear (water courses, roads, wind, etc); seasonal variations; periods of activity of the birds - the observation of nocturnal species is not easy. In the case of the “Priolo”, sightings are not always guaranteed. The rarity and behaviour of this bird makes some preparation necessary to be certain of a sighting. For example, you will need a good knowledge of its behaviour and area of distribution, together with appropriate equipment (binoculars and telescope, a plus). The municipalities of Povoação and Nordeste offer other potential areas for birdwatching, besides the SPA Pico da Vara/Ribeira do Guilherme. In particular, there are good places for sightings of marine birds, migratory species and rarities from continental Europe and America. 74

Useful Equipment For birdwatching, you will need the following equipment: Binoculars/telescope; Field guide: currently there are two guides available for the Azores: Aves dos Açores and Observação de Aves nos Açores, the latter also has an english version; Note-book: useful for recording your sightings; Check-list: a list of birds that may be seen (included in the annex). In addition, we suggest comfortable clothes and walking boots as this activity often involves walking or hiking along all sorts of terrain. Due to the variable weather of the Azores it is always recommended to carry a raincoat. A visit to see the species of the Planalto dos Graminhais requires warm clothes and waterproof boots.

10. Geocaching
Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunting game played worldwide by adventure seekers equipped with GPS devices. The basic idea is to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, outdoors and then share the experience online. A geocacher can place a geocache anywhere in the world, pinpoint its location using a GPS and then share its existence and location online. Anyone with a GPS device can then try to locate the geocache. Geocaching is appreciated by people from all age groups since it is an activity with a strong sense of cooperation and community, besides promoting good opportunities for raising environmental awareness and nature conservation. Often, players are asked to remove any rubbish from the areas of the cache (“Cache In, Trash Out - CITO). Anyone with GPS equipment can try to find the caches hidden all over the world. For further information about geocaching, please visit www.geocaching.com. 81

11. Places to visit Salga This parish is one of the newest settlements of the council of Nordeste and soon showed the great dynamism of its people in the most various areas. From Salga arose several scholars, entrepreneurs and interested people that contributed in the past and continue doing so to develop this quiet location. The baking industry is one of the most productive of this municipality and supplies the entire island with traditional breads and sweets, such as the rustic bread highly appreciated. The handicraft store “Folha de Milho” is a reference in both the parish and council. Here you can find the well known “bonecas de milho” (wheat dolls), flowers made out of fish scales and onion and garlic skins, garlic and chestnut paste and papyrus. Ingenious rush mats, raffia hats, Christmas cribs made out of gourds are just some of the handmade products on sale in this shop. Churches represent the most important part of the architectural heritage of the parishes of the municipality of Nordeste, and are strongly connected to the religious nature of its people. The Saint Joseph Church (“Igreja de São José”), in Salga, is one of the most recent churches of the council and dates back to 1903. The council of Nordeste has lots of viewpoints over the coast and forests with beautiful landscapes to offer to the visitor and Salga is not an exception. The viewpoints of Salto do Cavalo and Salto da Farinha are compulsory stopping points. 85
Achadinha It was in the small village of Achadinha that the liberal troops landed coming from the island of Terceira, in the final assault against the last Miguelist redoubt in Azores. This took place on the 1st of August 1831. It is said that the population of the village was hostile to the “liberal” forces. A monument, known as “Padrão das Almas”, was raised in 1957 in memory of the victims of this historic event, and it contains a tile taken from a small chapel dedicated to Saint Benedict (“Ermida de São Bento”). This chapel existed previously on the site that houses today the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary (“Igreja da Nossa Senhora do Rosário”). This church was built in the 16th century and as most of the religious buildings of this council was remodelled several times, most recently in 1882. It has a main body divided into three naves. The altarpiece of the main altar is gilded and was carved in 1734. Though humble, it’s carved garland graces this beautiful temple. Achadinha was also the crib for several renowned names of literature, such as João de Melo and Adelaide Freitas. This parish has even restored an old family house in honour to the great novelist João de Melo making it a Cultural Centre. One of the old rural paths that connected this to the neighbouring parishes, is now recovered and is a very sought-after walking trail known as “Terras de Nosso Senhor” (Lands of Our Lord). These are some of the many touristic offers that can be found in this locality, adding to the traditional gastronomy that you can appreciate in the local restaurants, such as the “Restaurante Amaral”.
Achada Achada is one of the most economically relevant parishes of the council of Nordeste. It was also the house of known literature personalities, starting with the poet Virgílio de Oliveira, honoured by a bust in the central garden of this small village. Like in other parishes, the Temple of Our Lady of Annunciation (“Templo de Nossa Senhora da Anunciação”) is the greatest part of the architectural 86
heritage of Achada. The previous temple dedicated to this saint dates to the year of 1526. The contemporary building is a result of several alterations being the last restoration done in 1984. It is a small and very simple temple, consisting of a single bell tower. Its churchyard, serving as a viewpoint, is a scenic area where one can contemplate a bucolic landscape embellished by the blue sea. The customs and traditions of this village are on display in the Museum of the Village (Achadinha), opened in 2006, in a building near the church. Riberia dos Caldeirões Park In Ribeira dos Caldeirões we can find the largest nucleus of restored watermills in the region: five mills and two miller residences that survived the storm of 1986. One of these is still working, and daily, a miller recreates the traditional methods of grinding corn for the visitors. These mills date to the 16th century and like many others throughout Nordeste were the source of livelihood and income of many families. This park also has a Support Centre for Handicrafts, where traditional handmade products of the municipality are on sale. Further information, please visit www.cmnordeste.pt.
Santana The municipality of Santana owes its name to the old Temple of Saint Ana (“Templo de Santa Ana”) which was built in Feteira Pequena for the spiritual needs of its inhabitants. In the 19th century, this temple became manifestly insufficient and much degraded, and so it was remodelled and widened into a new building in 1869. Raw materials, like roof tiles and lime, were frequently used in the 87
construction of houses in the past and are symbols of this parish today. An example of this heritage is a private lime oven, located near the church and still very well preserved. Another one is the roof tiles oven which remaining ruins can be visited in the regional road near the milk deposit.
Algarvia Algarvia, probably because it was almost uninhabited in the 16th century, is not mentioned by the greatest historian of the Azores, Gaspar Frutuoso, who lived in this century. The original church of Our Lady of Perpetual Help (“Igreja da Nossa Senhora do Amparo”) of the village was built in the 17th century by Captain Francisco Costão, so that residents of Algarvia could attend Mass on Sundays and Holy days. With the years the population grew and it was necessary to build a larger temple. The present church was built in the 19th century and it’s a small temple with a single bell tower, body and a simple but attractive altar. Vigia da Baleia Viewpoint In the old days whaling was one of the most important economical activities connected to Algarvia, here in the past there was a lookout. In this old post there is now a picnic park, from which one gets a magnificent view over the island’s north coast.
Santo António do Nordestinho Santo António is a synonymous of magnificent views over the north coast of the island, starting by the viewpoint of Borda da Ladeira next to the regional road. Besides the beautiful landscape, this is a great location to watch the sunset. 88
In addition, one can find several activities that encourage the development of this locality, from gastronomy to arts and crafts. Here we can find examples of the latter on sale in the Cultural Centre Padre Manuel Raposo. The church of the parish is one of the most beautiful religious gothic and manueline monuments of the island of São Miguel. It was built by the Priest Manuel Raposo and the locals between 1898 and 1906. Another reference is the Church of Our Lady of Fatima (“Ermida da Nossa Senhora de Fátima”), built by one local in the Lugar do Espigão, being the first church dedicated to this saint. In the celebrations of the 13th of May, a big mass is celebrated in this church, which is attended by many locals and islanders of the nearby parishes.
São Pedro do Nordestinho São Pedro do Nordestino has a temple of great religious devotion to the inhabitants of São Miguel. This is the Church of Our Lady of Sorrow (“Ermida de Nossa Senhora do Pranto”), located in a green pasture near the sea. This building has a long history of at least five centuries, dating its last reconstruction to the year of 1895. According to the legend, after the famous earthquake of 1522, the Virgin Mary appeared to a young shepherd, announcing that Ponta Delgada would be punished with a plague and asked him to build a chapel dedicated to her. The scared population then raised a temple to the Virgin Mary in the invocation of the Our Lady of Sorrow. Proven fact or not, the truth is that this small temple has survived over time and continues to be the subject of pilgrimages.
89
Lomba da Fazenda Located right after the village of Nordeste, Lomba da Fazenda parish has the biggest settlement and economical development of the council of Nordeste. For a long time, the inhabitants of Lomba da Fazenda took their income from the cultivation of the lands, especially with wheat and corn. In fact, this parish owes its name to a private farm owned by an important family of São Miguel located in this area (“fazenda” means farm, in Portuguese). One can still see the remnants of the traditional agriculture in the form of subsistence farming, with the growing of potatoes, beans and vineyards, a knowledge passed on from generation to generation. Nowadays, the livestock and milk production support most of the local economy. Long extensions of wild and old agriculture fields are today large areas of pasture for cattle. Nevertheless, the traditions of agriculture and cultural heritage are present in another kind of industry. In the baking industry, the bread production was one of the traditions recovered here. Laborious hands give continuity to the old ways of making wheat bread and corn, sweet bread (“massa sovada”), oven bread and cookies, turning this activity into a positive addition to the parish of Lomba da Fazenda. Regarding the architectural heritage of the parish, one can visit the existing temple built over the original Chapel of Our Lady of Conceição (“Capela da Nossa Senhora da Conceição”) dated to 1918. Rural tourism is another sector that bridges old traditions with modern ages. The Lomba da Fazenda was one of the first parishes to recover old housing patrimony for rural guest-houses with a relevant quality offer in this area.
Nordeste Village In the main parish of the council of Nordeste, one can find the most relevant monuments of its architectural heritage. The centenary bridge of Sete Arcos, the Main Church of Saint Jorge (“Igreja Matriz de São Jorge”), the Lighthouse of Arnel (“Farol do Arnel”, the first built in Azores) and several other old façade houses constitute its invaluable estate. 90
Lighthouse of Ponta do Arnel The Lighthouse of Arnel is located in a small fishing settlement of the parish called Lugar da Nazaré, which is one of the most picturesque areas of the council. Located at Ponta do Arnel, this lighthouse has a height of 15 m and a range of 25 miles. Guided tours are available, allowing people to get to know how it works and to visit a permanent exhibition about the lighthouses of the Azores. For further information, see page 132. The Main Church of Saint Jorge, located near the City Hall of Nordeste, is the most important and beautiful church in the council. This church was built in the 15th century and has undergone several restoration works, either by need of expansion or due to natural disasters, as was the case of the earthquake of 1522. This temple has an interesting façade, the main altar is gilded over white, and a highlight is deserved to the alternating colours of the basalt pilasters of the three naves. It also has pictures of the former Franciscan convent and a picture of a sixteenth-century patron saint. In the village of Nordeste there are two other chapels: the Chapel of Rosário near the bathing area of Foz da Ribeira and the Chapel of Nazaré in the fishing settlement, near the lighthouse of Ponta do Arnel. Forestry Interpretation Centre of Nordeste In Azores, the existing forests at the time of the colonization influenced the settlement and expansion of villages, providing them with some essential supplies. The intensive use of this resource lead to the installation, in 1948, of the Forestry Services in the Region, with the mission of applying the Forestry Restocking Plan, through special projects of afforestation of common lands. The circustances under which this work was accomplished deserve 91
to be remembered due to the lack of resources, hard conditions of work and the large scale of action. The main objective of this Centre, located in the municipality with the biggest forest area of São Miguel, included in a Recreation Forestry Reserve and near to a forestry nursery, is to pay tribute to all, that one way or another, contributed with their work and dedication to the forests of Azores, divulge the work developed by the Forestry Services in all interventioned areas and promote forest resources.
Pedreira The early chroniclers do not make reference to this place, which suggests that it had long been the grove virgin field that it was belched out by the years. Pedreira owes its name to a quarry (pedreira, in Portuguese) that existed in this place, since it was the site from which large amounts of raw materials such as rocks were extracted for the construction of the village of Nordeste. Then, little by little, houses were built for the quarry’s workers, followed by the construction of a church, where Mass was only celebrated on Sundays and holy days. In the 19th century, the size of the village demanded a new temple that was completed in 1872. It is this temple, dedicated to Our Lady of Light (“Igreja da Nossa Senhora da Luz”) that still exists nowadays, embellishing this parish. Also in Pedreira, one can find some of best viewpoints of Nordeste: Ponta do Sossego and Ponta da Madrugada, the beach of Lombo Gordo and Fajã do Araújo. Regarding walking trails, there is a very soughtfor walk once used by locals that had big extensions of vineyards. It starts in the back of the church of Our Lady of Light and follows on until Fajã do Araújo. One can still find old houses used by vineyard farmers and more recently built summer houses. Interpretation Centre of Priolo It is an environmental interpretation centre for the “Priolo”, a bird species endemic to this region of the island of São Miguel, once one of the most threatened bird species of the world. This centre includes 92
an interactive exhibition about the “Priolo” and its habitat, the Laurel Forest, as well as on the conservation actions that have been developed to preserve the species. This centre is open all year long for visitation, but in some months, especially in winter, only under appointment. For further information visit http://centropriolo.spea. pt/en/ and see page 132.
Água Retorta According to Gaspar Frutuoso, the name of the village Água Retorta (curvy water, in English) comes “out of respect to the water of the fountain that by the rocks falls on turns”. This picturesque town is located 75 km from Ponta Delgada and 14 km from the council centre. Who visits Água Retorta finds beautiful natural landscapes, a delightful Recreation Forest Park and a rich built heritage, including the church dedicated to the patron saint: “Nossa Senhora Penha de França”. In the summer, the Fajã do Calhau is a delightful place where many people own houses they inhabit temporarily, especially in the time of the vineyards harvest. In the winter, there are many villagers who still gather for the traditional slaughter of a pig. Hence, the gastronomy of the village is closely linked to products from pork, especially the liver sauce, the broken (“desfeito”), the smoked sausage (“chouriço”), the blood sausage on the barbecue, and the famous fried liver. Visit this village and taste the local cuisine. Believe that you will not regret.
Faial da Terra Located between two mountains, with the ocean almost kissing the streets, and the river dividing it in the middle, this so picturesque village is considered the “Christmas crib of the island”. This idyllic village, named after the abundance of Faya trees once found there, it’s an excellent place to visit. With 391 inhabitants, Faial da Terra mainly subsists of agriculture and cattle raising. However, it was not always so. In the early 16th 93
century, the fertility of the land and the beauty of the valley attracted the first inhabitants, who quickly made the land to produce, creating their own means of subsistence. The sea was also a valuable ally for this community since this was one of the villages with major whaling activity in the island of São Miguel. Time could not erase all traces of this activity. The well known ghost village named “Sanguinho” is a perfect place for tourists due to the suis generis beauty of its endemic plants and the attractiveness of the site.
Nossa Senhora dos Remédios Situated on the slopes of Povoação, the parish of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios consists of Lomba Loução and Lomba Alcaide and was elevated to the status of parish in 1957. The place name “Loução”, attributed to this “Lomba” (hill), had its origin in the name of João Loução, a mid-sixteenth century personality, who built a caravel in the entrance of Povoação. In turn, the name of the other hill, Lomba do Alcaide, indicates the place where the Ferreira de Azevedo’s family - the “alcaides” (mayors, in English) in the 17th century – lived. With 1,072 inhabitants, Nossa Senhora dos Remédios is the third most populous village of the municipality of Povoação and depends mainly on agriculture and cattle raising. With regards to the local cuisine, we can highlight the bean soup, pork rinds, fennel soup with broad beans, potatoes and corn thick porridge and bread with beans and salty peppers. Whoever passes through this village will have to visit some touristic attractions, such as the viewpoints of Pico Longo and Pôrdo-sol, Museum of Wheat and Herdade do Monte Simplício, though, the latter is a private property. 94
Museum of Wheat The Povoação municipality had a great historical tradition in cereal production, which granted it the nickname “barn of the island”. The Museum of Wheat is an old watermill that was reconstructed, where the tools used in the wheat harvest are preserved, as well as a permanent exhibition consisting of panels depicting the cultivation of cereals in São Miguel. It is open all year long; for further information please see page 132.
Povoação Village The village of Povoação was the place where the first settlers set foot on the island of São Miguel. It is located in the largest parish of the municipality of Povoação with 2,424 inhabitants. It is formed by the centre, surroundings - Comissão and Morro - and by several hills: Lomba do Cavaleiro, Lomba do Carro, Lomba do Botão, Lomba do Pomar and Lomba dos Pós. The festivities in honour of its patron saint, “Nossa Senhora Mãe de Deus” (Our Lady Mother of God), are held in the first weekend of September, when many emigrants visit the land to spend the holidays with their family. Delicacies are part of the village also, like the “fervedouro” (a kind of cabbage soup) and liver sauce with yams or sweet potatoes. Local artisans are dedicated primarily to create corn dolls, paper flowers, rag quilts, lace, embroidery, fish scale works and stonemasonry. Mandatory visits are to the Garden Hall, the church of Nossa Senhora Mãe de Deus and the church of Nossa Senhora do Rosário, the latter classified as property of public interest, as it was the first church of the island of São Miguel, the Park Zoo, the monument Portas da Cidade and the various viewpoints from where one can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views.
Furnas The parish of Furnas is one of the most beautiful places of the archipelago, commonly known as the “Visitors’ Room of the Azores”. Its name is related to several secondary volcanism phenomena active 95
in the Furnas Valley, known as boilers or fumaroles and hot springs. However, some say that the greatest wealth of the Furnas Valley is the diversity of its waters and springs and is considered by experts as the biggest hydropolis of the World. In this idyllic paradise, one can see the Furnas lake with its green banks and where one can find in one side of its margins the church of “Nossa Senhora das Vitórias” (Our Holly Mother of Victories) and on the other, the area where the famous ”Cozido das Furnas” (Furnas stew) is cooked - the natural boiling waters of Furnas. Povoação is also known for its magnificent parks and gardens. Here, we can find a vast and diverse number of parks, of which we highlight the José do Canto, the Dona Beatriz, the Fonte Bela (owned by the family M. Perrina), the António Borges (owned by the family Gomes da Câmara) and the one of the Forestry Services. However, without taking away the beauty and importance of all these, we must give special attention to the Terra Nostra Park, where one can find a wide variety of shrubs and trees, some over 200 years old, as well as a pool/lake of natural ferruginous hot water, dominated by the grand main house of the Park, which was the former summer residence of its founder Thomas Hickling, an Englishman. Microbial Observatory of Azores The fumaroles have a microbial life of great scientific interest, since its bacterial community is resistant to high temperatures. The Microbial Observatory of Furnas (OMIC) displays an exhibition on the numerous microscopic beings that inhabit the hot springs and organizes activities to discover these organisms. This Centre is open all year long; for further information please see page 132. Monitoring and Research Centre of Furnas The Monitoring and Research Centre of Furnas (CMIF), located in the southern margin of the Furnas Lake, was created in 2011 to promote the recovery actions developed to restore de water quality and the ecosystem of this lake. 96
CMIF has a welcoming area for visitors with information on the project and an interactive exhibition that allows a better understanding of the natural heritage of Furnas Valley and its lake including also its geology and volcanism, ecosystem, hydrology, fauna and flora. In addition, the external surrounding area has a picnic area and bathrooms, parking and a wide green area with a privileged view over the lake. This centre is open all year long; for further information please see page 132.
Ribeira Quente Among the mountains, near the sea, is the beautiful Ribeira Quente, a seemingly quiet place where Mother Nature insists on showing her will. This locality is composed of two distinct zones: Fogo, where a core of farmers, representing 21% of the active population of the parish, practice subsistence farming, exploring the waste land of the location; and Ribeira, where the fishing community is concentrated around the port, representing about 42% of the active population. In this community, 27% are young people, showing the importance of the fishing activity for this parish. A strong bet in the present and future with prospects of improvement was placed, since there have been large investments in the port of this town, making it one of the best of Azores. Geographically, the port of Ribeira Quente is one of the best located in the south coast of the island of S達o Miguel, not only for the sheltered conditions, but especially by the proximity to important fishing grounds, with about 100 fishing permits issued. This port is also an important mark for tourism development in the parish, sought-after nautical activities like whale watching and sport fishing. The village also has a boulevard facing the sea with more than 1 km, and one of the most pleasant areas of the village, and a precious beach, which every year attracts thousands of tourists and visitors.

a great panoramic view. Then, head towards Nordeste village, which offers a range of accommodation for the night, either along the route or in the village itself. On the following day, start your journey along the main road and after 7 km. We suggest you to stop at the Recreational Forest Reserve of Nordeste (6), where you have a playground for children, the endemic plants nursery, and an area where you can exercise and picnic . Afterwards, go to the Recreational Forest Reserve of Cancela do Cinzeiro and visit the Interpretation Centre of Priolo (7). Return along the same track and head towards the Tronqueira road. After about 6.5 km (from Pico Bartolomeu), you will find an unpaved track which marks the start of the Tronqueira. Follow this for 16.5 km to the viewpoint of Tronqueira (9), and enjoy the spectacular views of the impressive mountain of Pico da Vara. This route also takes you past several areas restored by the actions of the LIFE “Priolo” and LIFE “Sustainable Laurel Forest” projects, and – with a little luck – you may have a sighting of the rare “Priolos” which are found only in this area of the island of São Miguel, and nowhere else in the world. Follow the Tronqueira road to the main road, and visit the Recreational Forest Reserve of Água Retorta (10), that has a playground for children, a picnic area and a camping site. Continuing on the main road for more 7 km will take you to the Museum of Wheat (11).
