Adam Dant Illustrator Tower Hamlets resident Adam Dant is widely known for his unique celebrations of British culture and history through reinventing historical prints and illustrations by combining their style with contemporary ideas and situations. Many will be familiar with his maps and plans, for example of Shoreditch, which have both charted histories and re-imagined areas. Between 1995 and 1999 he created Donald Parsnips Daily Journal a palmsized ‘newspaper’ distributed at random on the streets – a contemporary take on the eighteenth-century pamphleteer. For our Winter Festival brochure, Adam takes his inspiration from old playbills and chapbooks. In particular he’s playfully explored the characteristically baroque interplay between music and nature, resulting in the illustrations of animals quizzically exploring musical instruments. He also shows his appreciation for the local architecture in the full-page scenes, featuring vocal consort Gallicantus in restaurant Galvin La Chapelle, as well as the map of our venues for this Festival, appropriately perched on a Georgianinspired music stand.
