Members invited to assist with Moravian rebuilding

On Thursday afternoon, June 24, a tornado swept through several villages in the south-eastern Moravian region of the Czech Republic, ripping the roofs off buildings, uprooting trees, and overturning cars. Hail stones the size of tennis balls were reported, and local officials said a string of villages suffered considerable damage along a 15mile stretch of road from Breclav to Hodonin. In the village of Valtice, west of Breclav, Mayor Pavel Trojan said almost every building had been damaged by a bombardment of hail. The Washington Post reported on June 25 that at least five people were killed and hundreds injured by the rare and destructive tornado. The twister destroyed thousands of structures, tearing through seven towns and villages in the southeast part of the country, making this the most severe on record in the area.

According to German news outlet Deutsche Welle, half of the village of Hrusky was destroyed, while Hodonin experienced total destruction of neighborhoods. Damage commensurated with EF3 to EF4 intensity on the 0 to 5 Enhanced Fujita scale for tornado strength. That would place maximum wind speeds in the 140 to 180 mph range. Radio Prague reported on June 25 said that financial as well as material aid is pouring into South Moravian villages hit by the devastating tornado. While the government has allocated emergency funds to cover immediate needs, caring individuals have already donated millions of crowns to public collections set up by the country’s nongovernmental support organizations. To help cover immediate needs, the Finance Ministry released 10 million

Dear Melanie, It gave me great pride to learn from page one in the June 14, 2021, Vestnik issue that there are more than 42,000 members and 100 lodges. Perhaps the founders of SPJST never could have imagined that their fraternal insurance company would ever grow that large, consisting of not only Czechs but many other ethnic nationalities. Credit, of course, must be given to Macy Narro of Lodge 17, New Tabor. She obviously did some homework to win the 2021 Flag Day Essay Contest. Over the years, I have noticed that the presidents of the lodges do not have a gavel and a striking plaque. I hereby propose that every president of every lodge be issued a gavel and striking plaque with the lodge name and number engraved on them. Since there are 100 lodges then 100 units of these need to be manufactured by whoever can make these. It will cost, but it’s worth it. Frank L. Chovanec Lodge 29, Taylor —SPJST—

From the Desk of SPJST Vice President Delisle Doherty

It’s Your Life

“Lead By Example” God has given all of us skills and talents, but He is more interested in the character of the man/woman who uses these abilities. Certainly, we can be good examples to others who watch us model the skills we use in our work. They can learn a lot from us. But they can learn even more by watching how we treat our spouses and children, and our fellow employees and associates, how we respond to annoying people and difficult situations, and how we talk about corporate executives when they make poor decisions. In the business world, we may expect people to look out for themselves, to do whatever it takes to climb the employment ladder, and to use people every step of the way. When you go out of your way to care for someone who is hurting, overlook petty offenses and take steps to resolve big problems, and exude a positive attitude while being ruthlessly honest about difficult situations - people notice. All of us have a hundred choices to make each day. We may not recognize many of them because we’re so steeped in habitual attitudes and behaviors, but we have constant opportunities to demonstrate love or selfishness, faith or doubt, hope or complaints, delight or disgust. Habits can be broken, but not without conviction or tenacity to make different choices. If we choose to be an

example to those around us, we are in for a great ride, seeing people’s lives touched through us. Don’t miss out! If you are a lodge leader, no matter how much the lodge is struggling, show others that just being there is a blessing. Whether there are five who show up, or 100, it’s still a blessing. Others will recognize this, and you will see more coming. Think about who is the best “leader by example” you know? What is that person’s impact on others? One way to stay positive is focus on the benefits SPJST has to offer. It’s not a building you can meet at; it’s tools that can bring communities together. It’s leadership for children. It’s activities for seniors. It’s bringing families together. You can make it a community of positivity. If you know anyone who wants to be a member of your lodge, you are welcome to have them call me, and I will point them to the best qualified agent to help you grow. For that day, the agent will work for you. Every lodge has 196 agents working for them. You get me the info, and I’ll get you the agent. Watch for a new and exciting member referral program coming in July. It can help you grow your lodge, make a positive impact on your community and for your family. Have a safe and blessed week. Know my door is always open - figuratively and literally. —SPJST—

face the street with one sign and put the other somewhere else (stored in case the first gets damaged), on the building or somewhere else on the lot, it’s up to you. If you want it two-sided, you can do that, too. SPJST is paying for all the signs so we ask that you install it or pay to have it installed. Generally, people install these signs on 4-foot by 4-foot posts or metal poles. Phase 2 will be for those lodges who meet regularly in one location: We will talk to that location, and if they agree, we will install a 4-foot by 8-foot sign that says your lodge meets there. Phase 3 will be looking at the lodges without buildings and working to put up signage to create a branding campaign to let the community know you are there. The goal is to have the signs printed and delivered within 60 days. Your District Director was asked to get contacts for each lodge so we can update each of

SPJST announces start of lodge branding campaign I am excited to announce Phase 1 of our lodge branding program. Phase 1 consists of the Home Office delivering two 4-foot by 8-foot signs to every lodge that has a building. Each sign will be printed on aluminum and laminated to keep the colors from fading too fast in this Texas heat.

We are not asking anyone to replace their current signage - unless they want to - but to add this near the street for all cars passing by to see. Each sign will look the same so when a person passes a lodge hall, they will know it is SPJST. We are asking the lodges to put the signs up near the street. If you want it to

you on the progress and when to deliver the signs. We are currently working on posters for the lodges. I will update everyone when we are ready to move forward. Four new brochures have been designed, too. Once they are printed, we will get them to each lodge and the agents. Phase 2 of that project will be to convert each brochure to Spanish. I will keep you updated on that progress. Watch for a new member referral program to be introduced this month. You will love it! Things are happening, and we are very excited to work with the lodges to help with new ideas and renewed growth for 2021 and beyond. Delisle Doherty SPJST Vice President —SPJST—

VĚSTNÍK jorie Treumer closed the old checking account and opened a new District Six checking account. Today is the first day she is writing checks on the new account. She reported $7,883.06 in the District Six treasury. The audit committee reviewed the books to be in order. The treasurer’s report was accepted. Adult ornament contest 2020 was held virtually due to COVID-19 restrictions. After adjournment of today’s meeting, delegates to the convention are asked to remain to review and ask questions in regards to changes being recommended to the bylaws. Marjorie Treumer (30), District Six Publication Committee representative, stated the committee held a virtual meeting in the fall to elect officers for the committee. Reduction in the number of issues of the Vestnik per month and increase in electronic subscriptions has shown a savings to SPJST. Karen Kaspar (30) represents District Six on the Finance Committee. She brought greetings from the Finance Committee which met in March 2021. The Finance Committee reviewed financial areas and are in process of finalizing recommendations from March to end of June 2021. The Committee evaluated financial aspects of SPJST. SPJST has a $13,000,000 surplus, and SPJST death claims are increasing. But, as members, this is the reason for our organization. The SPJST Supreme Lodge must continue to be proactive. Annie Vahalik (4) was elected District Six Director in September 2020. SPJST By-Laws require that directors and standing committee members be elected every four years. Congratulations to Annie. We appreciate that she has stepped up to the challenge. Karen Kaspar (30) gave her thanks

for all the support she had as District Six Director. Sister Kaspar was not able to give her final farewell and best wishes in person to District Six membership due to the spring 2020 meeting being canceled with COVID-19 and CDC restrictions. She stated that due to no inperson membership meetings in 2020, her final farewell and District Six report were printed in the September 2020 Vestnik. She wished well to District Six Director Vahalik and knows she will do her best for the members of District Six. Karen again thanked everyone for their support during the past years as District Six Director. Elizabeth Holub (23) represents District Six on the Insurance Committee. She reported that a virtual meeting was held to elect officers for the committee. Lots of changes are taking place in the Insurance Department with Vice President Delisle Doherty. SPJST Vice President Delisle Doherty presented a check for $2,000 to District Six for expenses incurred for the meeting. Lots of changes are being made in the Insurance Department. Of 312 agents, only 30 percent wrote business. He has several opportunities for agents to attend training sessions in person or virtually. Delisle reported that a new final expense plan will be available on June 14, for ages 40 to 80, and coverage is from $5,000 to $30,000. SPJST technology is not with current standards. SPJST has approved customizing technology for agents to give quotes onsite. Programs that are offered will be respecified such as the Family Value Universal Life, to be not undersold. Vice President Doherty reported that the 5-Year annuity rate is set at 3.25 percent to take members into the next presidential administration. Annuities are a wonderful product because they do not have any fees or are not affected by the stock market. With all the changes, as of June 1, we are in the black. For help in marketing existing lodge halls and lodge meeting places, SPJST is investing $50,000 in marketing materials, which includes two 4-foot by 8foot signs that can be placed near lodge halls or on walls where meetings are taking place. Marketing SPJST is best way to make community aware of our organization. If communities have

Founders’ Days or community events, SPJST can make themselves available and be a part of the event. There are 196 agents which work for SPJST. Any agent will work for any lodge. Bringing business is how to grow membership. New referral program will include a $25 gift card. Lodges to refer business; lodge contest; lodges need to grow, with posters for members, annuities, and benefits posted, members will be more aware of benefits. SPJST is working on new brochures in English and Spanish. New member benefits include the Member Services Directory which will be online by Labor Day. This directory will be free of charge to any member who owns a business. Businesses will have a plaque from SPJST to display in their business. If photo is taken with the sign, an article on business could be printed in the Vestnik or on social media. Vice President Delisle Doherty concluded stating, “We are one state, not seven districts.” DYC Lisa Bubela (30) was presented a check for District Six Youth Achievement Day (YAD). Lodge 180, Burleson members gather, reacquaint It seems like forever since we have had an actual meeting with members in attendance. On Tuesday, July 6, 2021, we had a meeting at El Fenix in Burleson. With all the happenings that have taken place recently in Burleson and the additional staffing of the Burleson Police, the Community Room has not been available for outside usage. All of our members enjoy eating at El Fenix, and they have a room just the perfect size for us to meet. Our meeting was different from our

VĚSTNÍK usual meetings as we had not had one in well over a year. Seems very hard imaging such a long time with Lodge 180 kind of being in an idle time. I would say that this meeting was not held in the true tradition of our usual meetings, but we did open the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and a moment of silent prayer. I would say that this meeting was a get-acquainted-withyour-fellow-member time. All members were present for the meeting with District Three Director John and Diana Engelke as well. After a wonderful meal and visiting with each other, we enjoyed great tasting muffins in lieu of a cake for the many birthdays that were missed in the past. Each person received a gift card of their choice when leaving. It was great seeing and being around fellow lodge members, and I look forward to our next meeting which will be Tuesday, August 3 at El Fenix in Burleson. As of June 25, labor offices started distributing individual aid of CZK 58,000 crowns per person to help those who have lost their homes. In the coming days, the regional development and agriculture ministries will channel another 500 million crowns to the affected municipalities. Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš has also called on the European Union to earmark finances from its Solidarity Fund to help remove the damage caused by the devastating tornado. Closer to home, Americans are learning of the destruction and are asking what they can do in order to show their solidarity and support for their distant

motherland whose residents are now suffering and who must begin what promises to be a lengthy rebuilding process. Texans, especially, remember that it was not so long ago that it was the Czech Republic that showed compassion and support for the people of Texas when disaster struck. In 2013, the Czech Republic Ministry of Foreign Affairs presented four million crowns — approximately $200,000 — to the city of West, Texas for rebuilding following the massive explosion of a fertilizer warehouse that occurred in that Central Texas community. Four years later, in 2017, the Czech Republic Ministry of Foreign Affairs approved the provision of five million Czech Crowns — approximately $237,000 — for humanitarian assistance to displaced families in La Grange, Texas in response to Hurricane Harvey. The gifts demonstrated the Czech Republic’s dedication and solidarity with the United States and especially Texans, where Texans of Czech Moravian ancestry represent a large part of the population.

the vocabulary, there are adjectives given showing the three gender endings ý, á, and é. 2. In the reading exercise, the feminine nouns křída, pohádka, and kniha are spelled with the ending ‘u’. This is because in Czech when a noun is used in some function other than the subject or predicate nominative, it must be put into a case. The aforementioned feminine nouns are in the accusative case functioning as direct objects answering the question “what?”. The feminine nouns ending in ‘a’, change this ending to ‘u’ when used as direct objects.

Exercise 1. Select suitable adjectives for the nouns given in the vocabulary. Remember that the nouns are either masculine, feminine, or neuter, depending on their endings, and the adjectives must agree with the nouns in gender ending.

TCGS July Book of the Month: Lee County Czechs Eleven years ago, Texas Czech Genealogical Society launched a project designed to fill an important gap in the genealogical records of Texas by means of a book titled, Lee County Czechs. The book subsequently has found its way into various local and personal libraries, as well as notable genealogical libraries across our country. The book had its beginning with the challenge, “You were from Lee County, and we (Texas Czech Genealogical Society) don’t have anything from there. Why don’t you do something on the Czechs of Lee County?” - or something to that effect. Well, I accepted the challenge with some trepidation, never having done anything like this before. At first, I considered doing the work from information from the United States Federal Census of 1900, this being the most comprehensive of all the censuses insofar as family information is concerned. However, upon compiling the information I found that due to the rather small Czech population of the county in 1900, I proposed to our leadership team that I expand the work to include information from the census records of 1910, 1920, and 1930 to include that of 1900. To this they agreed. In addition, the team agreed with my recommendation that we include pictures so as to add “life” to what might otherwise be considered “dull statistics.” An appeal was sent out, and a number of individuals and couples (whose names appear in the credits of the book) very graciously shared their collections with me. These appear in a “Lee County Scrapbook” chapter. Early on, I felt that it would be good to have a chapter on the physical setting of Lee County to show why the Czech community grew where it did: first and foremost, a belt of rich black land that stretched from southwest to northeast in the central part of the county. I also felt that it might be interesting to include something of the historical background of the county to demonstrate

Monday, July 12, 2021 the progression of the various ethnic groups and individuals who, shall we say, paved the way for the Czechs who basically overflowed from crowded Fayette County. Therefore, beginning with the Tonkawa Indians, who had been driven out of their Edwards Plateau homeland by the Apaches and Comanches, I briefly touched on the coming of the Spanish, French, Mexicans, American adventurers, Texan heroes, Germans, and Wends, all along that historical trail called El Camino Real (or, as it is sometimes called, King’s Highway, or Old San Antonio Road, or most recently, The Presidential Corridor), currently State Highway 21, until at last we come to the Czechs, who, in the early 1880s, settled along both sides of that stretch of rich black land previously mentioned. Thus, we have a second chapter for the book. Then, in order, I included the extractions from the Federal Census Records for Lee County for each of those four decades - 1900, 1910, 1920, and 1930 (the records for 1940 not yet having been released.) Next, having researched county records for corresponding years, I decided to include as much of these as were available. (When I say this, I am referring to the fact that only the records for 1900 and 1910 were available - the ones from 1920 and 1930 having been lost due to flooding in the courthouse some years ago). My reason for including these was to help the reader and researcher to see how individuals and families either prospered or suffered financial set-backs over those 20 years of living in Lee County. These tax record extractions form two chapters of the book. At last, we come to that chapter mentioned earlier, “Lee County Scrapbook.” It is hoped that the index of names in the back of the book will make its use more convenient. This work has been “a labor of love.” Yes, it was a long road to completion, but along those roads, precious memories of some very fine people who, in seeking to
