BEAUTY

and the

M

any m-a-n-y months ago.... Pre-mask, pre-new normal... pre-pandemic... I was worried about the recession and the future of my Pretty little shop. Ha! Little did I know what was yet to come. On 27 March all South African lives changed with those now famous words: “My fellow South Africans...” Suddenly we were on a forced holiday. Kind of fun at first, except we couldn’t go anywhere. But soon... Too much of a good thing... Dan is Lekker nie meer lekker nie. My first instinct was... I’m going to post something pretty on FB. Every single day. And what better place to find inspiration than Amulet. Obviously. So while everyone was posting photos of food and 5 easy steps to bake without flour/sugar/eggs... I made myself happy by sharing pics of random beautiful stuff. Just because. Because I could. Because I wanted to. Because I liked it. And frankly because suddenly I had all the time in the world. And soon it became a highlight of my day and of many others... What will I pick today? And pretty soon I realised that gorgeousness was resonating with many of my FB friends. Orders started coming in. And a long-standing relationship with a local Courier Company started. And today I’m still sending out beautifully wrapped parcels... The rest is history... We now know that businesses that went online could weather the storm. BUT nothing beats the real thing. I can’t courier the smell of freshly ground coffee, the soothing music, the touch of prettiness. My hart soars when I hear the sharp intake of breath as I hear a customer swoon: Ooooo, maar dis mooi. I’ve always been wonderfully surprised and grateful that a shop that doesn’t really sell anything practical, has been able to survive two recessions, petrol hikes (NO ONE will come to Hermanus, the pessimists told me back then), riots and now a pandemic. I’m a curious human, so I did some research. (Sounds way more impressive than it actually was, I watched a documentary about... yes, beauty and its effect on the brain.) Turns out that it’s a survival thing. Our ancestors were drawn to blossoms/flowers because it meant fruit/nourishment would follow. Waterfalls mean fresh water. My daughter is amazed to hear that back then water was actually free. Apparently dopamine is released when (most) humans are exposed to beauty. Cheapest drug on the market. I now understand why I literally get depressed when my surroundings are ugly. Once Amulet was allowed to trade, customers streamed in, with an urge to 6

decorate their houses. Toiletrolls = 0. Pretty stuff = 1. This explains why Hermanus was flooded when the Provinces opened. A desperate need for beautiful surroundings. It felt like a December. No complaints from me. In these unprecedented times (which has become one of my pet hate phrases) no one dares to predict what the future holds, but I suspect (and keep in mind that I’m writing this on 30 November) that we will have a bumper December season. I’m convinced that South Africans will support their local businesses. (I for one am SO over China) I’m also sending up a little prayer that brave small business owners won’t be tortured with that old hackneyed question: Is that your best price? Seriously? We’ve hardly survived 2020 and you want to haggle? Have mercy. And buy your wife that handbag or shoes. Buy both. She deserves it. Afterall she was stuck with the kids (and you) while the schools couldn’t open.

One of the most important lessons that I learnt this year, is that South Africans care. Let the Politicians do whatever they’re not supposed to do and just leave us to do our own thing. We’ve got this. When people are hungry, we feed them. We don’t need a commission or a Command Council to organise us into chaos. When farms are burning, we send food by the truckload and raise money for those who lost everything. One day our children will tell their grandchildren about that year when the whole world came to a standstill. The year when masks became a fashion accessory. One of the best sellers in Amulet by the way. Since I have to cover half my face it might as well match my outfit. Sometimes I’m way more good-looking with my pretty mask on than without it. Some people have a face for a hat, I have a face for a mask. Also hides my true feelings if someone really irritates me... Although I have to admit, I suspect my ears are getting bigger. Maybe it’s because my hearing disintegrates with a mask on? Or maybe the ears are getting bigger so the mask won’t slip off. Along with my keys, cell phone and glasses, add mask to the list of lost items that I’m constantly searching for.

And the expression ‘I haven’t the foggiest...” has new meaning as lately my glasses are constantly steamed up, and it’s NOT because I’m excited. I’m so happy that the Splash magazine is back and that you’re reading this again. We’ve all missed each other. Let’s be kind. Breathe. Be grateful for all the beauty around us. 2020 was a big lesson. Make sure you got it.

2020 Will always be remembered as somewhat of a devastating year. It came and changed the way we see family, social life and well, life in general. A great part of, not only South-Africa, but the world, are still picking up the pieces Hurricane-2020 left behind. In the beginning of 2020 M-Net promised more local content. The makers of magic delivered on that statement and graced our screens with some of the best local talent. Some familiar faces met up with fresh ones in the industry. I for one, fell in love with a few of them and re-discovered others. The local content kicked off with The Bachelor SA Season 2 just in time for Valentine’s day in February with Marc Buckner as our Bachelor. For weeks we sat glued to our screens watching the drama unfold in front of us. Ten amazing women all came for Marc’s heart, but it was the young Marisia van Wyk who took it with grace. Most of these ladies agreed that the journey helped them form new friendships. Sadly, their love story ended after a few months. When Still Breathing’s first episode aired on 27 February 2020, Tiffany and John Barbuzano took us on a 12-week journey with this story of “Life, death and the mess in-between.” Although it is impossible to single out one actor, I did find Jane de Wet, Tiffany Barbuzano and Kate Liquorish’s work excellent. Indeed, the whole cast and crew delivered a world class production. In life, what you see is not always what you get and in this series, it is no different. Sometimes the best of intentions can bite you in the back. Is there a Season 2 on the cards? The last episode ended with a shock, but very clever, leaving room for a possible second season. There is most definitely enough story to reel viewers in again.

Then came Single Wives SA Season 1, bringing M-Net’s Thursday date night back. Six ladies embarked on a journey of self-exploration and growth. They all have the most amazing stories and went through a lot of hurt in the past. Under the wings of the amazing and experienced coaches, Mapaseka Mokwele and Justin Cohen, they had to face some hard facts about themselves, life, relationships, and love. Not unlike any other reality series, there was drama, some tears, and many happy smiles. Will these ladies be making lemonade with life’s lemons in future? Short on this reality series’ tail, came Inconceivable. Just how far will you go for a friend? I was torn between right and wrong, pro’s and con’s, with this group of friends. Just how wrong is wrong? Is there a grey line and just how grey is this line? I found myself angry at a character, just to feel sorry for him in the next episode. You think you know your friend? The same friend can turn out to be your worst enemy when pushed into a corner. Motherhood and friendships took a toll on the characters in this, yet another, excellent local drama. I could not wait for the Thursday night slot to follow their drama. With each episode a new level of desperation was portrayed. Lies and deception were pushed to the limits in this series. M-Net’s Tele Nova Legacy is one of the absolute best I have seen. Mary-anne Barlow like you have never seen her before. As Felicity Price she does the part justice and took me on a rollercoaster of emotions. Well, pretty much the entire cast did not disappoint. A family at war with themselves – it could not have described the series better. I had a date with the Price family and their complicated lives every Monday to Thursday. Deep emotions and secrets hidden behind the pretence of a happy, wealthy family. When you have

Annette Havenga everything to gain, will you be prepared to lose what you have? Just when you think you are home free and your secret is safe, a curve ball hits your way.

Survivor fans, I have great news! Season 8 of Survivor coming soon. Once again Nico Panagiotopoulos will lead the survivors as presenter of this popular reality series as we follow the contestants’ every move to see who will “outwit, outplay and outlast” to be the ultimate survivor and winner of the series. M-Net confirmed that “… we are delighted to announce that production has started.” M-Net hopes to air early next year, 2021, as soon as June. As yet there is no confirmation as to the location, but it is said to be on home soil and the guess is the Wild Coast. It will make this season the first to be filmed domestically. For the best in local, (and international), content, choose Channel 101, M-Net. TV-greetings.

Conserving the Whale Coast

The tragedy of our time has been happening all around us, barely noticeable from day to day – the loss of our planet’s wild places, its biodiversity.” - David Attenborough Nature in all its splendour is at the heart of the Cape Whale Coast tourism industry. Nature tourism is the mainstay of the Overstrand economy. With such a precious asset, one would expect that our wild places would be the very top priority for local businesses as well as local government.

So what is the point of non-government organisations such as Whale Coast Conservation? What do we do that’s not already being done? Whale Coast Conservation (WCC) is a small outfit with only 5 full-time and one part-time staff members, so it’s important to focus on just a few areas of strength. WCC is really good at teaching and inspiring people of all ages to want to learn about the natural treasures we have in our area. We share our passion for nature with communities so that they may benefit from a closer relationship with our awesome natural world. We do this through lessons, exhibitions, nature experiences and citizen-science activities. Many of our youth do not know what fynbos is, let alone any notion of protecting it. We teach young people about their natural heritage. We do school visits, outdoor camps and leadership mentoring. We visit schools with travelling exhibits and lessons on different themes that complement the school life sciences curriculum. Our interactive learning material brings the natural world into the classroom in a meaningful way, connecting book learning to real life. Camps in nature are jam packed with nature lessons both on land and on the beach. Excitement really ramps up after dark when nocturnal animals like frogs and chameleons are easier to find. Camps provide many opportunities for mentoring the youth in science-, lifeand leadership skills. We share our passion for our unique but fragile world through talks, webinars, adventures in nature and weekly press articles. Our regular public talks feature experts in their field, talking about aspects of nature that inform and inspire us. Webinars are recorded and appear on social media to reach a wide audience. We take small groups on amazing adventures in nature. We share the magical mating displays of fireflies with enthralled onlookers and involve kids in monitoring frogs in a wetland after dark; we share our passion and knowledge through weekly

nature articles in The Village News, while regular newsletters keep members informed about our activities. Many projects rely on collecting a lot of data. The more bodies we have in the field, helping to collect information, the more successful our projects. We rely heavily on our citizen-scientists and volunteers in our chameleon rescue project. Cape Dwarf Chameleons are increasingly impacted by urban expansion and habitat transformation. They fall victim to bulldozers when plots are cleared. In gardens they might be undetected and dumped with garden cuttings. Our team leader and chameleon volunteers survey where chameleons occur in urban areas and relocate them to safe habitats when necessary. Together with partners and volunteers we participate in beach clean-ups along the WCNR coastline. The litter collected is analysed and tallied, then uploaded to a central database, so that sources of litter can be tracked. This knowledge informs educational interventions to reduce littering. We help to protect biodiversity. Whale Coast Nature Reserve (WCNR) forms a vitally important coast-to-mountain corridor. Alien invasive plants are the biggest threat to our native fynbos vegetation. We clear alien species on the WCNR and conduct plant and animal surveys to record how the variety of plants and animals on the reserve recover after the aliens have been removed. A chameleon sanctuary is slowly taking shape in the WCNR and will eventually provide a safe haven for rescued Cape Dwarf Chameleons. Long-term preservation of ecosystem structure and function ensures the conservation of biodiversity through natural processes. WCC keeps tabs on all activities that may harm nature. This is our so-called “Watch” programme. Whale Coast Conservation registers as an interested and affected party (I&AP) in all advertised public participation processes related to environmental impact assessments and change of land use applications outside of the urban edge.

We mobilised the public to submit 3,400 individual objections to this road that is neither needed nor wanted.

Our vision for the future is an expansion of wild places across more of the Overberg. An example is our support of the Whale Coast Nature Reserve – over 400Ha of fynbos that will be protected in perpetuity. This reserve is a very important upland-lowland link with a variety of fynbos ecosystems and ecotones that has been designated as one of the Table Mountain Fund’s priority Climate Change Corridors. It also contributes to the conservation of rare, threatened and endemic species. It has been shown that experiencing nature (and participating in caring for it) has enormous social and psychological benefits. This reserve is easily accessible to people from the surrounding urban areas, providing a place of refuge from sociological pressures. The reserve also has great potential for educating the local youth about nature, biodiversity and ecosystem services – so important to our health and wellbeing. Our vision is also for the establishment of more Marine Protected Areas (MPA). An example here would be to motivate for the whole of Walker Bay, from Hangklip to Quoin Point, to be designated a Protected Area. The benefits to local fisher communities of protected nursery areas for marine species, have been well established. Again, information and education would be critical in the acceptance of such a reserve. The long-term benefits of a marine reserve need to be clearly spelled out. Community involvement of local stakeholders is a WCC strong point. We could do it. How can people get involved with WCC’s work? Volunteers are very welcome to join our chameleon monitoring citizen science project; or help to establish our chameleon sanctuary on the Whale Coast Nature Reserve by

Contemporary Beach House Design

Sarah Donnelly

T

hey say hindsight is 20/20, so as far as beach house design trends are concerned, 2021 is a year that is looking towards a beautifully styled future. Mixing Styles 2021 is all about mixing which means you get to pick and choose all the best bits from all the different coastal styles. It gathers the iconic moments from seaside coastal, surf shack, Hamptons, nautical and tropical schemes and even modern boho. Coastal Colours Dulux’s colour of the year, Tranquil Dawn is a muted green hue is that is meant as a nod to elements of the natural landscape. A new decade heralds a new dawn and the hazy pale green tones of Tranquil Dawn are calming and comforting as a beach sunrise. Dusky blues and subtle champagne hues are also in our colour palette this year. Bohemian Whites This one will come as no surprise as the boho trend has made such a huge comeback in interiors. All-white bohemian style is huge right now and mixed with gorgeous rustic moments that make them a sublime choice for any modern beach house. The presence of wicker, jute and rattan will become commonplace, and rich textural expression will be the headline story. The Tropical Island Bird motifs will flutter everywhere in 2021 and tropical palm leaves, beautiful botanicals and patterns remain in style. Creating your own island paradise with soft neutrals and pops of island colour are bang on trend.

Seashells by the Seashore Shell motifs were huge back in the ‘20s and saw a resurgence in the ‘80s before going out to sea again. But, our seafaring friend, the scallop-shaped shell has come ashore again and it decorates everything from plush headboards to dishes, throw pillows and eclectic vintage pieces. Originality Matters In 2021, a return to seeking out and investing in craftsmanship and originality in design and art will be important. Knowing where a piece was made, by who and the stories that surround that object make our décor decisions unique. Hermanus is brimming with talented, up-and-coming artists and craftspeople. Let’s support them.

Make it Sustainable Sustainability is at the heart of anything that is being manufactured today. Recycling, repurposing, reinventing and reusing are all things that consumers are beginning to consider as fundamental when designing houses today. Think reclaimed shipwreck pieces and driftwood décor. The contemporary beach house draws from rich organic textures and from the natural beauty of its surroundings.

Prospects for Business in the Era of Coronavirus

A

s one of the most successful businesswomen in South African and the UK, where she has built major hospitality and staffing businesses, Penny Streeter knows what it takes when you have to pick yourself up, dust yourself off and start all over again. “Tourism and other sectors are impacted by COVID-19 and lockdown, but Overberg and Western Cape have huge potential commercially. The region can bounce back. When you are down, the only way is up; I’ve been there. What it takes is hard work, intelligently applied,” she says. Penny started her first recruitment company in the UK aged just 22 - but after it collapsed and her marriage fell apart she had to move into a homeless refuge for two years. She was pregnant with her third child. Today she owns Benguela Cove Lagoon Wine estate, near Hermanus, and has invested heavily to create an international wine brand and tourist destination. In 2016 she took a winning formula for South African wine farmstyle hospitality to the UK, buying a 202 hectare estate and creating a 15 hectare vineyard in West Sussex, at Mannings Heath Golf and Wine Estate. A second property was bought at Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens in 2017, which saw the first commercial planting of Pinotage in the UK. Restart Penny’s second venture in the recruitment sector, after the first setback, was in 1995. She went on to win a string of awards, including the Financial Times ‘Fast Track 100’ prize as the fastest growing UK company, and an OBE from the Queen for ‘Services to Enterprise’. With strong family connections still in South Africa, in 2004 Penny moved back-office sales and ICT operations to Cape Town. The A24 Group then launched its medical staffing service here. Today she employs over 300 staff in Bellville and operates two nursing agencies: Nursing Services Of South Africa and Ambition 24hours South Africa.

With the A24 Group thriving, Penny branched out into wine production and hospitality with Penny Streeter the purchase of the Benguela Cove vineyard in the Walker Bay wine region in 2013. The vineyard was part of the residential and wine farm estate where Penny lived and became available to buy when the previous owner died. Major investment followed, in a 450-ton winery and in bringing the 173 acres of vines up to the environmental standards recommended by Wines of South Africa (WoSA) and its Sustainable Wine South Africa (SWSA) programme. Opportunity “I knew nothing about wine and vineyards when the estate became available, but it’s rare for a wine farm to come on the market; you seize opportunities where you can. To minimise risk I try to hire the best talent wherever possible and recruited Johann Fourie as cellar master.” The estate has 65 hectares of vines, which produced 520 tons of grapes in the most recent harvest, and 150,000 bottles. Cultivars comprise Sauvignon Blanc at 45%, Shiraz 25%.and others. “You have to find a market niche for your business and build a brand around it. WIth Benguela we have developed ecotourism, which is a big attraction to the area, with Hermanus and the whale coast close by. We offer wine tastings on the lagoon for visitors to experience the vineyard, set in the beautiful UNESCO-designated Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve. Also we developed children’s adventure attractions as a major draw for families, where there were none before in the area.” “The key now for businesses is to obsessively test and monitor what customers want and respond. Your focus must be on profit. Tourists will return to Overberg because so many people from the UK and other countries love the wine, the climate - the whole culture. When they come they will attract new investment. We must be ready and market now, to get our message out there about the delights of this incredible region.”

Professionalism in Real Estate… or not? A

fter passing the Professional Designation Examination (PDE), full-status estate agents may use the designation ‘PPRE’. I am sure the public would have noticed as much since 2012. PPRE is the acronym for ‘Professional Practitioner Real Estate’. Now the question that arises is to the relevant knowledge, compliance and professional conduct of this estate agent who the buyer or seller has entrusted the sale or purchase of his/her home to. 1. Relevant Knowledge that needs to be communicated to clients: 1.1 Up to date knowledge of local real estate market conditions is essential, i.e. the historical and current data relating to the number of sales and rentals that take place monthly/annually, the relevant target markets to enable the introduction of properties that are for sale to the correct market as well the financial trends with respect to purchasers. 1.2 The agent also needs to be totally au fait with all costs involved in the sale process in order to ensure that the clients can be informed and aware of their responsibilities – • When purchasing a property the possibility exists that costs pertaining to inter alia deposits, mortgage bond costs, con veyancer’s fees, Transfer Duty vs VAT, Deeds Office Registry Fees, Municipal provision for Rates and Taxes, possible occu pational consideration exist. • The costs involved in selling a property like inter alia compli ance certificates, Rates and Taxes clearance certificate, bond cancellation fees (if applicable) and possible penalties, estate agency commission, possible Capital Gains Tax if the property is not the seller’s primary residence, or even if it is, and the gain exceeds R2m or the size of the property exceeds 2ha. 1.3 A professional estate agent must also have a good knowledge of the legislation pertaining to estate agency, property sales and ownership as well as the legal aspects pertaining to all contractual aspects of purchasing and selling, especially the general principles of contract and the terms and conditions of the agreement of sale in particular. Pertinent issues that need to be explained to the parties to the agreement would inter alia be ‘What is included in the sale?’; ‘Defects and the Voetstoots clause’; ‘Occupation and Occupational consideration’; Cooling Off Rights’; the timing of Risk passing to the purchaser; ‘the meaning of Suspensive and Resolutive conditions’; the requirements for a valid Offer to Purchase and a valid acceptance’. Counter-Offers by sellers after receipt of an unacceptable offer to purchase (OTP) from the purchaser also need to be handled with the necessary due diligence in order to ensure validity thereof. The non-possibility of electronic signatures (even in the electronic age) pertaining to agreements for the sale of immovable property must also be adhered to in order to ensure a valid Deed of Sale. 1.4 When the owner of a property agrees to grant an estate agent a sole mandate to sell his/her property, the agent is the sole holder of the right to sell the property, but this sole selling right does not exclude the seller from selling his/her own property him/herself. It only restricts the right to one particular agency over and above the seller’s own right to sell. This mandate must be in writing in terms of the Estate Agency Code of Conduct and be for a reasonable period of time and contain a termination date. The right to sell lapses at the end of the agreed term and the seller can then grant the estate agent an extension of the sole right or grant an open mandate to a number of estate agencies. In the case of an ‘exclusive sole mandate’, the same applies as for a sole mandate except that the seller’s right to sell his/her own property is excluded.

2. Legal Compliance

Pam Snyman

In order to operate legally, all estate agents* and estate agency principals** must, as from 15 July 2008 be in possession of the following registered qualifications: FET Certificate: Real Estate (estate agents) or the National Certificate: Real Estate (for principals of estate agencies). *An estate agent is someone or an agency who undertakes the marketing of real estate for sale or for rental on behalf of a client or the management of immovable property on behalf of a client. All estate agents must be in possession of a valid, current FFC (Fidelity Fund Certificate) A **principal estate agent is any director of an estate agency company, member of a CC, a partner in Partnership, or the Sole Proprietor of an estate agency. All principals and their agencies must be in possession of a valid, current FFC. Intern estate agents must after their internship period and qualifying, pass the Professional Designation Examination (PDE) set by the Estate Agency Affairs Board in order to be able to use the designation PPRE and obtain a full-status FFC. The same applies to a principal who must pass the principals’ PDE in order to be afforded the status as MPRE (Master Practitioner Real Estate). 3.Ethical and Professional Conduct 3.1 An estate agent is obligated to the following ethics in terms of conduct: • at all times to maintain a position of trust towards a client • to act in the interest of the client • always to use reasonable care and skill when doing business on behalf of a client • to avoid a conflict of interest (his/her own vs the client’s) • not to make secret profits • not to disclose or abuse confidential information • not to make false statements about a client’s property • to account for all monies received on behalf of the client • to communicate with the client and give written feedback 3.2 Professional conduct that clients can and should receive: • Analysing and appreciating the clients’ (both purchaser and seller) needs • Obtaining information about the seller’s property and planning a suitable marketing strategy • Honesty, transparency and fairness to all parties involved • Maintaining contact by providing regular feedback during the marketing and selling process (both to purchaser and seller) • Presenting offers and counter-offers in a professional and unbiased manner • Good after-sales service with regular feedback pertaining to the conveyancing process Please feel free to contact any REDZetc agent in your area. COVID RUGBY D

‘n Baie goeie voorbeeld hiervan vandag is skolerugby.

Lekker rugby kyk.

Five amazing facts about the Great White

The first thing that comes into people’s minds when they think about great white sharks is that they are relentless killers, but not many people realise that there are still many mysteries about the Great White Shark that we still don’t know. Here are some fun facts about great white sharks that you probably don’t know about:

The Great White Shark cannot be kept in captivity:

For land animals, all you need to do is recreate their world on land in a closed off environment, which is easy to do. For animals in the ocean, it’s not this simple. For ocean creatures, such as dolphins and other fish, scientists have been able to hit the nail on the head, but its proven to be quite unsuccessful for the Great White Shark. The shark is known to ‘refuse’ to live under captivity – they either starve themselves or they slam their heads against the walls, and many aquariums have been forced to release the creature back into the wild for their own safety.

Humans have never experienced Great Whites mating:

Great White Sharks are near impossible to follow around because they appear and disappear at their own will in deep waters. Observing Great White Shark mating is more difficult than other species. Great White Sharks are quite rare and it is dangerous to be in the water with them outside of a cage. They are often in places where the water is cold and murky making it hard to shoot any footage of them as well.

Great White Sharks have a secret party spot:

Great White Sharks tagged in North America have been tracked to travel to waters around Hawaii and take a yearly respite in a mysteriously alluring mid-ocean spot that researchers are calling the “white shark café”. Scientists still haven’t been able to figure out what goes on in these waters but it is suspected that this is where mating takes place or where female sharks travel to give birth.

hunting and navigation. This sense is so developed that sharks can find fish hiding under sand by honing in on the weak electrical signals emitted by their twitching muscles.

They don’t like conflict:

Great white sharks are actually conflict-avoidant — at least with one another. When there isn’t enough food to go around, sharks swim past each other, slapping the surface of the water with their tails. Whoever slaps the water the most and hardest gets the meal.
