Fairytales do come true Even in 2021

“One day when I’m twelve years old, I will be like all the other girls in my class.” I look at my six year-old. How can I tell her that it will never be the case. She’s just started Grade 1 and it’s tough. She’s the only deaf child in the school. With the help of the huge hearing aids behind each ear she can hear about 20% of normal speech. (And only when there’s no background noise.) Some sounds she simply can’t hear. She relies heavily on lip-reading and basically has to guess what the other person is saying. She often gets it wrong, much to the amusement of the other girls in school. “What’s wrong with her?”, a precocious classmate asks me. For once I’m grateful that my daughter can’t hear.

for Jane, small little fairy gifts, delicate illustrations. An artist in the making.

There was bullying, certainly. She’d come home in tears. No friends. No invites to parties. If you’re different, you don’t belong. I recall seeing her on the playground, completely on her own. Concerts, school tours, swimming galas - torture. Imagine life going on around you and you’re always a few steps behind, not quite knowing what’s going on, desperately trying to keep up. People treating you as if you’re stupid. As parents, we felt helpless. You can’t force children to play with your child. We lived in Johannesburg at the time. We were told that she would only ever be able to pick up one language - if she’s really intelligent. We changed our home language from Afrikaans to English. Yes, we were criticised for that.

I’m a mother so of course I think my daughter’s illustrations are great. Luckily my customers feel the same. Jana started with greeting cards, then a stationery range. All original, unique and magical like the fairy that saved her a long time ago. I sit back in amazement as she comes up with more creative ideas. Illustrations on velvet bags. Velvet cushions are next. Today the shy little girl helps me run Amulet. Confident and able. Granted, the masks make it incredibly difficult to hear. Little Jane designs is spreading its wings.

It didn’t get better. Girls get nastier the older they get. Maybe we should move to Worcester and enroll her in the school for the deaf? But how would we earn a living? (This was long before the days of working from home and we were actors, not exactly in demand.) One morning, Jana came running to me. She showed me a hand-written note that had been left on her bedside table underneath a small pebble. It came from Jane, a fairy. But Jane was like no other fairy. She was deaf too. Without any friends and incredibly lonely. “ Dear Jana, will you be my friend, please?” My daughter’s life changed. She and Jane wrote to each other every day. She could hardly wait to wake up in the morning to read Jane’s note. They would share their heartbreak and tell each other about hurtful comments and nasty girls. Jane was a fairy with practical advice and she saved my child. You can’t change other people, but you can change your attitude. Jana was now living in her own world. And because she had a best friend, the rest didn’t matter. She started creating. Miniature clothes

Fast forward to Jana’s matric year. Two bi-lateral cochlear implants later. She was the top Student in the Province in Art and Graphic Design. She even passed Afrikaans. In a mainstream, bilingual school, Hermanus High. Yes, in 2008 we moved here. Not because of the crime in Gauteng, but because we wanted to give our daughter a fighting chance.

2020. Lockdown. Amulet closed. Unemployed. And Little Jane Designs was born. (Even though the letter- writing has stopped, Jane is still around.)

Saturdays she can be found at the Hermanus Country market and Sundays at the Dorp Street Market in Stellenbosch. And the wonder of Instagram. No words needed. The pictures do the talking. Being different makes you strong. Being different forces you to come up with alternative plans. And in today’s world, being different makes you stand out from the rest. Fly, Little Jane, fly.

BMW brings you their first full electric car … Hello BMW i3 – A normal lady’s test drive experience ….

I

was waiting in anticipation for the arrival of, what is said to be the future of automobiles. Yes, you guessed right, electric cars, frowned upon by many people. Maybe a lack of understanding? Or just the refusal to move on and appreciate evolvement of technology? Gone are the days when you needed a key to unlock your car, gears to drive and petrol to keep it going. Make space for cars that feed on electricity and can easily give you up to 260km of battery power. The sleek and sporty BMW i3 delivers a fully electrical promise. Charging takes four hours on fast charging and eight hours on normal charge duration, making it possible to have your car ready and charged for work the next day. Sharing points are fairly easily accessible and your car’s GPS system can even guide you to the appropriate spots. The components are lightweight, enabling the unparalleled dynamics of the car. Components are cost-effective to replace should it be needed. The BMW i3 is kind to the environment, and our pockets, with zero fuel consumption and zero CO2 emissions. Some exciting news for the greenies, it even contains recycled components! Finally, a company that heard our pleas to help protect our dying planet. But wait there is even more. This smooth ride can reach from 0 to 100 km/h in less than 8 seconds and brags with 135 Kw and 250 Nm torque! Definitely a mover this one, just a little pressure on the accelerator and you can expect a bit of vava-voom action. The breaking action is light and smooth. You can touch the

8 6

indicators slightly and does not require further action once your movement has been completed. The BMW i3 is an absolute breeze to park and handle. It did take me a full five minutes to get used to the slight break action when you lift your foot from the accelerator. That being the regenerative charging, allowing the kinetic energy to switch to the power being placed back into the car’s battery. This helps with the battery power range. It cannot charge the car as the normal charging would, but does help improve the battery’s life.

Annette Havenga

Safety and comfort are key when it comes to this car with features like the Driving Assistant Plus and the Traffic Jam Assistant. Approach control warning and Person waiting with light city braking function, as well as Speed Limit Info. This snazzy little car is available in an amazing range of colours to choose from e.g. Imperial Blue, Blue Ridge Mountain, Melbourne Red, Mineral Grey, Capparis White and Fluid Black Not totally sold on this model? You can get your hands on the BMW i8, a plug-in hybrid (electric and petrol). BMW has promised the full electric ix and ix3 for the future.

BMW did not compromise in the luxury aspects of the i3. It is every bit as comfortable, spacious, luxurious and tech savvy as you would expect of German engineering. Driving is a pleasure in this cheeky electrical car. She comes with a five year/100 000km service plan and an eight year/160 000km warranty on the battery. Camera-based Cruise control with Stop and Go function, 10.25 inch GPS screen and sunroof makes her ideal for commuting and city cruises.

Technicalities aside, she is a looker and is bound to turn a few heads as she will effortlessly own the road. This car is gorgeous, spacious, comfy, luxurious, easy to drive, safe and sustainable. Oh, and I love all the hiding spots and easily accessible cup holders. Staying hydrated will be easy in your fully electric BMW i3. Thank you, BMW Stellenbosch, for the opportunity to test in the 2020 Melbourne Red electric BMW i3. i3-greetings

Annette

Designing in Col olou ourr “Color is a power which directly influences the soul.” ~Wassily Kandinsky

Sarah Donnelly

f most of us love colour, why is it that so Iinhabit many of the homes and spaces that we are still bland beige and brown?

Sure, some interiors are purposefully monochromatic, but others are devoid of colour because we are scared, and don’t want our homes ending up looking like a hot mess. Here are some of my designer tips for introducing colour into your ówn home. The Blank Canvas If you are moving into a new home, starting from scratch or currently have a totally neutral palette and are looking to introduce colour into your house for the first time, how do you start? Firstly, choose your colour scheme. It sounds obvious (but you’d be amazed how many people don’t do it). Pick out colours that you love and limit them to a maximum of 3 per space, and if you are a noobie when it comes to colour, go with max 2. Remember that a “colour” incorporates and the wonderful tones, tints and shades of that colour, making your palette actually quite abundant. Designer Tip: All colours can go together. You simply have to find the right shades and tones of those colours that work together. So, have fun playing around with your colour picks to find exciting combinations that you love. The Statement Piece Another way to tackle the introduction of colour into your home is to find a statement piece as a starting point. This could be a colourful item that you own and love such as an artwork, a rug or a scatter cushion. Then simply pull out the colours from that item and incorporate them into the room to keep your design cohesive.

10

Designer Tip: Spread your accent colours around the room so that the eye travels across the space and has visual interest. The Power of Repetition When it comes to interior design, you can get away with just about anything, as long as you can find a way to repeat it in a space. For example, if you want to incorporate your grandma’s cerise pink vase into your living room but don’t have any other pink in the room, add a throw or scatter cushion as a punch of pink repeat. Designer Tip: Accessories are your friend. Use them as opportunities to create easy colour and pattern repeats throughout your space. Colour & Light Without light there can be no colour, so these two share a complex relationship in interior design. Ever wonder why the colour of an item you see in a store looks completely different when you take it home and simply doesn’t fit the tone of your other décor? Cool white retail lighting is nothing like the warm or natural light that you have in your home. It’s not your eyes that are tricking you, but the light. Designer Tip: Check out the store’s returns policy before purchasing so that you can easily exchange out items that don’t work. Back to Black Black is the universal color or noncolor, that goes with everything. It can provide weight, crispness, definition, as well as great style and sophistication. Most designers believe that every room needs at least a little touch of black - it adds just the right amount of life, without

anyone’s really noticing. It creates depth seamlessly. Designer Tip: Black breaks the repetition rule. Winning with White Use white to freshen up your space if it is looking a bit tired. White also makes small spaces look bigger and amplifies the natural light in your home. Since white is a basic colour, it can act as a great background to accent items and make them pop. Designer Tip: When in doubt, whites and blues ALWAYS work together. The Gracious Greys A plethora of greys are used in interiors today and this is a design trend that is not going anywhere, and with good reason. Grey is the go-to colour that generously makes all colours around it look good. It is hugely versatile and goes with most design styles, so, don’t hesitate to use it as your main neutral. Designer Tip: Greys, as with whites, have undertones of for example of green, blue and pink. Take notice of these before implementing it into your space. Final Tip: Compile a physical moodboard incorporating all the elements and colours of your design scheme and take it shopping with you. This will keep your mind and eye focused in the distracting arena of retail shopping and the myriad of confusing choices. THRIFT AND SAVE - Phila Bikitsha

Covid-19 has turned the whole world around in so many ways. Who would have thought that breathing fresh air could lend you up to 6 months in jail or being fined a couple of thousand Rands. Apart from having to cover half of your face, limited gatherings, new ways of greeting people and social distancing (just to count a few), people have had to adapt to the new way of living and have had to make some changes in the ways in which they spend their money. 2020 has been an eye opener to me if not to many of us, I’ve seen how one’s life can change in an instant from having everything to having just enough to survive or nothing at all. This has been a wakeup call to me and to many to start saving up and cut unnecessary costs. If you haven’t thought about it maybe you should add thrifting to your list as one of the ways to help you cut cost. I’ve always loved vintage clothing and looking a bit different from others and I could only get my vintage clothes at thrift shops or on those second hand stands along the roads or taxi ranks. Before I was buying pre-loved clothes just because I could not find my taste of clothes anywhere else but at thrift shops. Since covid-19 I have been buying from thrift shops just to cut costs and save, and I promise it’s been a winwin situation I mean I get to wear what I love at amazingly low prices, I’m talking about good quality clothes, fairly new, classics!

There’s quite a few here in Hermanus as well, I know at least six of them and what I like is that they don’t only sell clothes, you can find books, furniture, sport equipment, antiques and just about anything you can think of. One thing about pre-loved goods is that you get them at a very reasonable price and you can change it up or pimp it without holding your breath because you know if something goes wrong you won’t lose a fortune and thanks to You-Tube we can all be DIY kings and queens. Not only can you save money by buying pre-used stuff but you can also make money by selling them. Instead of keeping clothes or furniture that you don’t use anymore in your garage, why not have a garage sale and get rid of the stuff. I can bet there are people that will find them useful. Remember, ‘’another man’s trash is another man’s treasure’’. You would be surprised, people sell almost anything and there’s always a buyer for everything. The empty wine bottle you have at home can be pimped into a unique décor piece, so don’t think twice, sell it. Nowadays almost everything has value even if it’s R5 it is money you didn’t have. Even if you don’t have unwanted stuff to sell at home, you can still buy something at a thrift store, spray paint and make it look new and resell it. Thrifting is not gross at all, instead it’s just cheaper way of living, I mean who doesn’t want to save money or even make extra where they can, especially in these uncertain times we live in. I have found thrifting very effective on cutting costs, I agree we still need to look good but it can be done cheaper. Before you go shopping for winter clothes visit a thrift shop and see if you won’t find your favorite jacket ten times cheaper than a new one. If cutting on costs has been on your thoughts consider thrifting. Sometimes we really do not have to get brand new clothes or furniture, we can get used ones and it’s going to be new in your closet right? If you are cutting costs thrift and save,…

it is much easier and lots of fun.

Local at Last! - Antoinette du Preez For us, moving to Onrus was a big step. I never thought we would leave behind the hustle, bustle and city lights of Cape Town to move to the coastal town where I spent a lot of time in my childhood. I grew up enjoying most weekends in Onrus with family and friends and even attended Sunday school at the DeWet hall as a child. Little did I know that my parents would make the ‘groot trek’ and that my brother and I would follow suit in the years to come. Almost 40 years since my parents discovered the gem that is Onrus, we are now all locals at last. Land en See also joined the du Preez family, our beloved sport and surf shop that have been in Hermanus since we started coming here.

Ever since I can remember, the smell of “melkhout bome”, “bamboes” and “braaivleis vure” reminded me of Onrus,… now my new home. I fell in love, all over again, with the friendliness, hospitable and laid back atmosphere of this magical place. You simply cannot compare the feeling of coming home to that of Cape Town. We are extremely fortunate to live in such a beautiful, safe and friendly neighbourhood! I have so many great memories from back in the day, camping trips in Onrus Caravan Park with my grandparents, to rollerblading in Chiappini Street, my older brothers (Peter en Wouter) scaring me with stories about the bats flying around at night, and swimming in the lagoon... which I still do! Each and every Easter weekend and Christmas has been so special, spending time with my immediate family and the cousins. Growing older, I’ve had the best matric weekend, parties at the beach and Davies pool and of course new year’s parties on my parents lawn when we were no longer allowed to hang out at the beach after dark.

What one needs to know about real estate investment? I

t seems as if COVID 19 in South Africa has brought about a surge in real estate investment. This is specifically relevant in certain areas and property types and can be a great opportunity for potential investors. There are ways and means of making it happen…

therefore has VALUE for which an investor can pay a PRICE.

In order to invest in real estate one has to be especially cognizant of certain basic considerations when evaluating a particular opportunity. Here are some initial thoughts that should assist:

The price that an investor can pay (market value) is the most economic present use of the property’s future net productivity or income stream.

• how much of your own capital (equity) do you wish to invest; • the possibility of future capital growth in the area in which you wish to invest; • the potential income stream that your investment can produce • the effect of inflation • the possible liquidity of your investment, i.e. how easily your investment can be converted to money • the possibility to leverage your capital • the utilisation of tax benefits • after-tax yield on capital invested • possible sources of borrowed capital • the best percentage to borrow in tandem with own equity investment • current interest rates, both nominal and effective • the best term for borrowing • utilising the rental income to amortise your loan • the monthly instalment to be paid in order to repay capital and interest • all additional costs in the purchasing and borrowing process Before investing and or borrowing it is also of extreme importance to understand why real estate has value and can therefore contribute to your investment portfolio: Real Estate has VALUE…But value is not inherent…what is inherent in property is its utility, productivity and by being an economic product: • Utility: the potential to provide services that satisfy human needs and is the benefit which is derived from possessing a property and can be realized in 3 ways: Ownership for own use (occupation), for cash flow (rental) and for capital growth (increase in value). The utility of a property is a function of the land as well as the improvements (physical size and form, topography, soil, services) as well as location (convenience, exposure) and its institutional attributes in terms of legal usage: • Productivity: only if advantages outweigh disadvantages for a particular investor. Advantages include the possibility of the provision of operating income (rental), financing (leveraging), income tax (special deductions) and capital growth. Disadvantages that also need to be considered include operating expenses, interest on borrowed capital (mortgages) and applicable taxation. • Economic product: means that it is not available in unlimited quantities. Scarcity and productivity imply an economic product and property is an economic product because it is productive, it is often scarce in relation to demand (demand and supply). Value is thus definitely not inherent to a property … it is ascribed to it by individuals and their specific needs. Now the following can be assumed: PROPERTY possesses UTILITY in order to be PRODUCTIVE as an ECONOMIC PRODUCT and 14

Pam Snyman

An investor in real estate is advised to follow a sound investment process, e.g. 1. Analyse your needs, objectives and resources 2. Determine terms of current mortgage loans or other sources of finance 3. View the selected property by doing a physical inspection 4. Determine the property’s productivity 5. Consider the possibility of leveraging. (A method to increase the yield on equity. Money is borrowed at a lower rate of interest than can be earned from a project by using only own money. 6. Calculate the investment value by capitalising the first year’s net normalised income 7. If a long term investment is envisaged, calculate the Net Present Value by discounting the future net income stream over a period of time and future reversion (selling price) 8. Research the current market conditions in the particular area where the property is situated and evaluate factors that could influence value in future like economic, social and political factors 9. Make an informed decision It is clear from the above that investing in real estate requires much research and specific knowledge. This is only the beginning! RUGBY TOE D

In ons dae was dit net sus of so. Cheslin Kolbe is ‘n goeie voorbeeld.

Lekker kyk!
