“Medical Marijuana” Takes On New Meaning for Metastatic Breast Cancer

PJ Hamel November 20, 2007

f you have breast cancer, you may have considered the use of “medical marijuana” at some point during your chemo treatment. Smoking marijuana has provided some women with relief from the nausea and vomiting that can accompany chemo, relief that the range of normal side effect drugs weren’t able to give. Some states permit the legal use of medical marijuana; most don’t. Nevertheless, most women who want to try marijuana seem to be able to get it. Personally, I didn’t experience any severe problems with nausea. But I was astounded at the number of people who, prior to treatment, offered to get me a supply if I thought I needed it!

Now, doctors at the California Pacific Medical Center Research Institute in San Francisco have released a study, in the current issue of Molecular Cancer Therapeutics, that may in the future open the door to a much more critical use of marijuana: stopping the spread of metastatic breast cancer. It seems that a compound found in cannabis (the scientific name for marijuana), CBD, has been shown (in the lab) to stop the human gene Id-1 from directing cancer cells to multiply and spread.

California Pacific Senior researcher Pierre-Yves Desprez, in an interview with HealthDay News, noted that the Id-1 genes “are very bad. They push the cells to behave like embryonic cells and grow. They go crazy, they proliferate, they migrate. We need to be able to turn them off.”

While studies are still very much in the preliminary stages, it’s interesting to think that a plant that has been used medicinally for nearly 5,000 years may in the future be a key element in controlling cancer. As recently as 1937 (when it was outlawed in the U.S.), marijuana (“cannabis sativa”) was being touted as an analgesic, anti-emetic, narcotic, and sedative.

Desprez and fellow researcher Sean D. McAllister joined forces just two years ago. Desprez had been studying the Id-1 gene for 12 years; McAllister was a cannabis expert, but not involved in cancer research. Together they “it’s interesting to think that a plant that has been used medicinally for nearly found that Id-1 is the “orchestra conduc5,000 years may in the future be a key tor” that directs breast cancer cells to element in controlling cancer” grow and spread. And that CBD inhibits Id-1; it turns it off, puts it to sleep, pick your metaphor. Bottom line, it neutralizes it. And Parke-Davis, once America’s oldest and largest drug manufacturer (and now a divithe cancer stops spreading. sion of drug giant Pfizer), offered “Fluid Both researchers pointed out that CBD is nonExtract Cannabis” via catalogs. Now it’s illegal. Here’s hoping that non-toxicity is an important attribute; Desprez someday soon cannabis returns, this time as and McAllister predict that, to be effective, paa successful treatment for metastatic breast tients might have to take CBD for several years. cancer. They also cautioned that smoking marijuana isn’t going to cure metastatic breast cancer; the level of CBD necessary to inhibit Id-1 simply can’t be obtained that way.

Marijuana as Medicine By Dr. John McPartland

Despite marijuana’s unambiguous medical benefits, the USA Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) classifies marijuana as a prohibited Schedule 1 drug (“no currently accepted medical use”). However, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the primary active ingredients in marijuana, is classified as a synthetic Schedule III drug (dronabinol, Marinol). The DEA’s hypocritical classification is rejected by many Americans. Currently thirteen states in the USA allow patients to possess marijuana for medical use, contingent upon a physician’s recommendation, but possession remains illegal under Federal law.

Cannabis (marijuana, hashish) has long been used for recreational and medicinal purposes for 10,000 years or more. Its medical indications are manifold, including glaucoma, muscle spasticity (e.g., Huntington’s disease), and a variety of pain syndromes. Marijuana reduces nausea and vomiting and enhances appetite, so it helps people with AIDS and opposes the side effects of cancer chemotherapy. Research shows it can prevent the death of injured neurons. And everyone knows it Because marijuana remains illealleviates anxiety and depression. gal under Federal law, its source remains the black market. Everything must be in balthe historical uses of cannabis. ance, especially nutrients. The

most common contaminants of marijuana are molds and pesticides. Optimal cultivation eliminates the possibility of these contaminates. So how does marijuana work as medicine? The question is a proverbial onion, with many layers to peel before we get to the core. The first layer is the medicine’s herbal essence, which is at odds with current medical science. The DEA and FDA criticize the use of herbs as medicines, saying plants contain a variable mix of compounds and cannot provide a precisely defined drug effect. According to the pharmaceutical industry, medicines are synthetic, single-ingredient “silver bullets” that focus upon solitary metabolic pathways in our physiological systems. Herbalist, on the other hand, applauds the polypharmacy of herbal remedies and claim two advantages over single-ingredient drugs: 1. The many constituents in herbs may work by multiple mechanisms to improve therapeutic activity in a cumulative or synergistic manner. 2. Herbs may also contain compounds that mitigate the side effects of their predominant active ingredients.

Thus, marijuana has been characterized as a “synergistic shotgun,” in contrast with synthetic, single-ingredient “silver bullets.” The many ingredients in marijuana modulate our health via several metabolic pathways, gently nudging our system towards homeostasis. This kind of “multitasking” makes marijuana impossible to evaluate. But multitasking avoids the unbalanced distortion of solitary metabolic pathways, as produced by synthetic, single-ingredients silver bullets such as Vioxx. First and foremost in marijuana’s list of ingredients is THC. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is a “new” molecule, produced by cannabis, which evolved within the past 34 million years. Many botanists speculate that THC initially evolved as a toxin to deter herbivores. But this evolutionary strategy was diverted when THC became attractive to humans-the “botany of desire” described by Michael Pollen. THC works in humans by mimicking an endogenous compound that our own bodies make, called anandamide. THC bonds to anandamide’s receptors, called cannabinoids (CB) receptors. Research indicates that CB receptors originally evolved in primitive organisms about 600 million years ago! However, as with all chicken-andegg questions, the story of CB receptors and cannabis began long before the current pair of protagonists appears in evolutionary time. It is probable that both CB receptors and cannabis had evolutionary predecessors. They may date to “deep time,” before plants and animals diverged in the primordial soup. Over many eons,

CB receptors may have become “vestigial,” analogous to an appendix, only to be reactivated when Homo sapiens discovered cannabis. Humans have interacted and coevolved with cannabis for millennia, creating a complex heterogeneous medicine by selecting plants that provide maximal benefits and minimal side effects. The success of 10,000 or more years of human refinement with this botanical medication will be difficult to replicate in modern laboratories. This deconstruction of pharmacological theory is radical, and may her-

ald the reintroduction of herbal medicine into modern medical pharmacopeias, with marijuana leading the way. When THC or anandamide activates CB receptors, the CB receptors activate G-proteins. Gproteins are microscopic messengers that migrate around cells and modulate a variety of ion channels and enzymes. Cannabinoids receptors associate with different subtypes of G-proteins, such as Gi and Gs subtypes. The “i” and “s” abbreviate “inhibitor and “stimulator,” which describe the opposite

effects these G-proteins have on their targets. Research has shown that different cannabinoids preferentially activate different subtypes of G-proteins. This may explain why different strains of marijuana produce different highs. For example, Afghani plants produce a lot of cannabidiol (CBD), and perhaps CBD preferentially activates Gi and causes an inhibitory, stony, narcotic-like effect. Whereas plants from Thailand contains tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV, a propyl analogue of THC) that might preferentially activate Gs and cause that speedy, buzzy, Thai high. Thanks to its mix of ingredients, marijuana cases fewer psychological side effects (such as anxiety and panic reactions) than pure, synthetic THC (Marinol). Clinical trails have shown that CBD reduces the anxiety provoked by THC, and CBD demonstrates antipsychotic effects. Anxiety from THC may also be alleviated by terpenoids present in marijuana. Many terpenoids are volatile and possess sedative properties when inhaled, including limonene, linalool, citronellol, and terpineol. Terpenoids may also mitigate memory loss caused by pure THC. Limonene, terpinen, carvacrol, and pulegone increase brain acetylcholine activity. This mechanism is shared by tacrine, a drug for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. Terpenoids act on other receptors and neurotransmitters. Some terpenoids act as serotonin uptake inhibitors (as does Prozac), and augment the neurotransmitter GABA (as does

Valium). Terpenoids produce anti-inflammatory effects in the respiratory tract. Their presence in marijuana smoke may explain why inhaling marijuana smoke causes less airway irritation and inflammation than inhaling pure THC. Limonene blocks the carcinogenesis induced by “tar” generated from the combustion of herb. Limonene is currently undergoing tests for the treatment of several types of cancer. Dr. Ethan Russo described “endocannabinoid deficiency syndrome”, and suggested that the administration of THC and CBD corrected for deficiencies of either anandamide or CB receptors. The administration of THC and CBD seems to kick-start our endocannabinoid system. For example, THC stimulates the release of anandamide, and CBD inhibits the breakdown of anadamide. One study has shown that acute administration of THC may increase the density of CB receptors in the central nervous system. Tolerance and addiction to marijuana is uncom-

mon, in part, because THC is a “partial agonist.” Agonists are compounds that stimulate receptors, and partial agonists can only partially activate receptors. Perhaps the best medicines are partial agonists-they steer us away from disease, but our innate healing mechanisms are still required to restore us to complete health. We recall the sheep farmer analogy: when the farmer finds a sheep on the wrong side of the fence, the farmer correct the situation by placing the sheep on the other side of the fence, not by carrying the sheep over the fence and all the way to the center of the pasture. In conclusion, marijuana as medicine is becoming accepted around the world, even among scientists and physicians. Professor John Graham was not far off when he projected in 1976, “The drug has been frowned upon, officially banned, but the interest of the medical profession is slowly reviving. It is not impossible that a limit but respectable niche will be established for it in

Managing Your Condition With Exercise

Need a reason to work out?

Here are 7 to start... What if someone told you that a thinner, healthier, and longer life was within your grasp? Sound too good to be true? According to a wealth of research, exercise is the silver bullet for a better quality of life. Not only does regular exercise aid in weight loss, it reduces your risk for several chronic diseases and conditions. Finding activities that you enjoy and that become part of your daily routine is the key to a long and healthy life. The list of health benefits is impressive, and the requirements are relatively simple -- just do it. Research has confirmed that any amount of exercise, at any age, is beneficial. And, in general, the more you do, the greater the benefits. The National Academy of Sciences has recommended that everyone strive for a total of an hour per day of physical activity. Sounds like a lot, but the hour can be made up of several shorter bursts of activity (it can be walking, gardening, even heavy housecleaning) done throughout the day. Physical activity is an essential part of any weight-loss program, to maximize your fat loss while keeping valuable muscle mass. But exercise has many other health and longevity benefits. It can help prevent or improve these conditions: 1. Heart Disease. Regular activity strengthens your heart muscle; lowers blood pressure; increases "good" cholesterol (high-density lipoproteins or HDLs) and lowers "bad" cholesterol (low-density lipoproteins or LDLs); enhances blood flow; and helps your heart function more efficiently. All of these benefits reduce the risk of stroke, heart disease, and high blood pressure. Researchers at Duke University suggest that the amount of physical activity, rather than its intensity, has the biggest impact on improving blood lipids (cholesterol). According to The New England Journal of Medicine, these researchers also found that any exercise is better than none -- although more is better. 2. Stroke. In an analysis of 23 studies, researchers found that being active reduces your risk of having and dying from a stroke. According to a study published in the journal Stroke, moderately active study participants had 20% less risk of stroke than less active participants.

3. Type II Diabetes. This disease is increasing at alarming rates -- by 62% since 1990 -- and 17 million Americans now have it. Physical activity can enhance weight loss and help prevent and/or control this condition. Losing weight can increase insulin sensitivity, improve blood sugar and cholesterol levels, and reduce blood pressure -- all of which are very important to the health of people with diabetes. In a study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, Frank Hu, MD, of the Harvard School of Public Health found that a brisk walk for one hour daily could reduce the risk of type II diabetes by 34%. Ward Off Disease continued... 4. Obesity. Overweight and obese conditions can be prevented or treated with exercise along with a healthy diet. Activity helps to reduce body fat and increase muscle mass, thus improving your body's ability to burn calories. The combination of reduced calories and daily exercise is the ticket to weight loss. And controlling obesity is critical, as it is a major risk factor for many diseases. Lowering your body mass index (BMI) is a sure way to reduce your risk of dying early and to live a healthier life. 5. Back Pain. Back pain can be managed or prevented with a fitness program that includes muscle strengthening and flexibility. Having good posture and a strong abdomen is the body's best defense against back pain. 6. Osteoporosis. Weight-bearing exercise (such as walking, jogging, stair climbing, dancing, or lifting weights) strengthens bone formation and helps prevent the osteoporosis or bone loss often seen in women after menopause. Combine a diet rich in calcium and vitamin D with regular weight-bearing exercise for maximum results. According to The Journal of the American Medical Association, data from the Nurses' Health Study showed that women who walked four or more hours per week had 41% fewer hip fractures than those who walked less than an hour a week. 7. Psychological Benefits. Improved self-esteem is one of the top benefits of regular physical activity. While exercising, your body releases chemicals called endorphins that can improve your mood and the way you feel about yourself. The feeling that follows a run or workout is often described as "euphoric" and is accompanied by an energizing outlook. Exercise can help you cope with stress and ward off depression and anxiety.

And these are just a few of the ways exercise improves your health. Studies have suggested it can also help with certain types of cancer, improve immune function, & more. Š2005-2009 WebMD, LLC. All rights reserved. WebMD does not provide medical advice, diagnosis or treatment.

Putting It All Together:

Exercise and a Healthy Diet Exercise alone produces modest weight loss; when combined with a reduced-calorie diet, the effects are much more impressive. In a study published in The Journal of the American Medical Association, University of Pittsburgh researchers found that people who exercised regularly and ate a healthy, modest-calorie diet lost weight and improved cardiorespiratory fitness regardless of the length or intensity of their workouts. Another study published in JAMA showed that it is never too late to reap the benefits of physical activity. Sedentary women 65 years and older who began walking a mile a day cut their rates of death from all causes by 50%.

If exercise is so good for us, why aren't people doing it? Some 64% of men and 72% of women fail to fit in activity on a daily basis, according to data from the 2000 National Health Interview Survey. Americans today are no more active than they were a decade ago. The American College of Sports Medicine recommends a combination of aerobic exercise (the type that makes you breathe harder, like walking or jogging) for cardiovascular conditioning; strength training (like lifting weights or calisthenics) for muscle toning, and stretching to improve your range of motion.

Strive for doing all three types, but remember that any exercise is better than nothing. Here are some easy ways to work physical activity into your life: * Adopt a dog and take it for walks every day. * Do things the old-fashioned way -- get up and change the television channel; open the garage door manually; use a push lawnmower. * Take the stairs instead of the elevator. * Walk briskly whenever you can. * Minimize use of your car; walk to destinations within a mile. * Take up tennis or any other game or sport you enjoy. * Join a gym or health club. Next time you are tempted to skip exercising, keep these wonderful health benefits in mind and remember, every little bit helps. You may not feel up to a rigorous workout, but how about a walk in the neighborhood? Don't pass up a chance of a lifetime -- that is, a longer and healthier one.

FREE AT LAST- MARIJUANA LEGAL FOR ALL IF THE AMMIANO BILL IS PASSED IT COULD SAVE CALIFORNIA TAXPAYERS 1 BILLION DOLLARS, WHILE THE ECONOMIC BENEFITS COULD RANGE ANYWHERE FROM 12 TO 18 BILLION DOLLARS. BY BRUCE MARGOLIN ESQ- DIRECTOR OF LOS ANGELES NORML

It was only as far back as 1913 that the state of California had completely prohibited Cannabis. Due to its prohibition marijuana soon became extremely popular amongst its residents, and while the popularity of marijuana increased, so did the costs for law enforcement, which could have been part of the reasoning behind establishing the Moscone Act of 1975. The Moscone Act decriminalized the possession of small amounts of marijuana, which ended up saving California 100 million dollars annually. It’s probably a safe assumption to make that one of the main concerns on everyone’s mind these days is the state of our economy. In a time where we see major corporations declaring bankruptcy, and laying off large percentages of their employees; while distinguished and highly-educated college graduates struggle to obtain any job or career for themselves, it is hard not to find yourself wishing you could simply pull your bed covers over your head and hide out until this economic panic has been resolved. Well start throwing out your mass quantities of stress release balls, and take your therapist off speed-dial, because with the introduction of The Ammiano Bill economic distress may begin to disapear. Your first question is probably What exactly is the Ammiano bill? The Ammiano Bill is a landmark bill which will tax and regulate marijuana like alcohol and tobacco products. The bill (AB 390) was introduced by Assemblyman Tom Ammiano on Monday February, 23rd in San Francisco. Just as The Moscone act helped rejuvenate a weakening economy in 1975, The Ammiano Bill has the potential to do just the same for the modern day great depression we have found ourselves in engulfed in. And just how much money could this save California taxpayers? Well let’s just say, you better sit down for this news. California NORML (National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws) coordinator Dale Gieringer has expressed his excitement and support of The Ammiano Bill stating that “this bill is a winning proposition for California’s taxpayers. In this time of economic crisis, it makes no sense for California to be wasting money on marijuana prohibition, when we could be reaping tax benefits from a legal, regulated market instead.” In fact NORML passed this legislation on from Senator John Visconcellos who was the author of Senate Bill 420. However, because of term limits he was unable to pursue the legislation before he left the office. The passing of The Ammiano Bill would not alter the medical marijuana laws of California, which currently allows medical marijuana patients, collectives, and caregivers to grow specified amounts of marijuana for treatment of their own personal health issues. -

Ready, Set Grow What are the security issues when growing indoors? Security, Excerpted from Section One, In door Marijuana Hor ticulture, The Indoor Bible

G

rowers and tokers have been made into "the enemy" by the American government in the War on Drugs. It is the job of law enforcement to arrest the flower-growing enemy. To wage this war on US citizens, law enforcement wields an impressive arsenal, including draconian laws and high tech surveillance gizmos.

Security Checklist: * Electric bill should be about the same as the neighbors and previous tenants * Garden and grounds should be tidy and similar to neighbors * No light leaks whatsoever * Use friend's car to visit grow store * No noise - humming, fan on/off at night, etc. - is audible day and night * No strange odors including ozone smell All electrical outlets, fuses and connections must be grounded. Inspect electrical connections for signs of heat - blackened wires, melted connections and smelly wiring. Have a current fire extinguisher rated to put out wood, paper, grease, oil and electrical fires.

When law enforcement has "evidence" of a growing operation, they look for more. They look at telephone, electric and shipping records for starters. A thermal imaging camera is most often used at this point. Occasionally they use dogs that are trained to sniff out marijuana. The information is used against the grower to obtain a search warrant. If there are plants discovered at the house, they continue to build the case against the grower by using anything the grower says. The police collect most of the information on the grower from the grower! Surround your property with a bed of cedar shavings instead of bark chips in the flowerbeds. Cedar shavings disguise other odors. Use an ozone generator to neutralize the marijuana fragrance. Have a ready reason for extra electrical consumption. Unload grow supplies a little bit at a time or from within a locked garage.

Security Alert Never tell anybody about any garden. Control where you go. Stay away from other grow houses, wild parties, real criminals, etc. Always take a friend's car to the grow store and go seldom. Travel with others whenever possible. Your car is easy to trace and follow. Keep your consumption habits reasonable; don't show large cash income. Buy large assets, houses and cars, over time. Don't ever tell anybody you are growing or even joke about growing. Always have a job and a reason for your activities. Keep a low profile.

Security Alert Don't talk on the phone about any garden. Keep your home and surrounding property in good repair. Make sure the house is painted, lawn mowed and garbage picked up. Keep electrical use to a reasonable amount and keep the air clean around the house. Have very few visitors and keep to yourself. Have minimal conversations with neighbors.

directional microphones, infrared scopes, thermal imaging, etc. They can also subpoena telephone, Internet and electrical company records. Intimidating cops coerce electric company employees to break the law and give them the records. Tracking telephone numbers, including location, is very easy. There has been more than one case where law enforcement illegally acquired telephone records and placed illegal taps on garden store telephones. Police use telephone records to target grow houses. Always use pay telephones with an untraceable phone card or pay with coins. Lazy narcs also watch garden store parking lots and follow clients home.

Security Alert Security Alert! Pay bills in cash or with money orders.

Pay all bills and make all purchases with cash. Cash tells no tales and leaves no trails. Pay for mail order merchandise with a money order. Have the merchandise sent to another address. Develop garden photos in a large city in a quick develop store. Remember, the Never trust anybody, friends, family - brother, film is not yours! Do not give your telephone sister, children, even your mother! In America, number on the return film information. Photos "Land of the Free", a grower can go to jail just should not show incriminating evidence. Don't for giving another grower advice! Law enforcement has sophisticated telephone bugging devices, super sensitive

Security Alert Never admit to anything. Absentee owners are the best landlords. Make sure home inspections are done before you move into the home and the rental agreement should allow for an advance notification of inspections. Put the telephone, electricity, garbage, etc. in a friend's name. Grow in a rented home. If you own the home, it is often forfeited if you are suspected of growing. Curb noise and odors by sealing and insulating the grow room with "sound board". Similar to sheet rock, soundboard muffles sounds well. Install rubber feet or grommets on fan feet. Build an extra room or box (allow for air flow) around ballasts to muffle noise. Place a thick pad under ballasts to absorb vibrations. In-line fans are much quieter and efficient than squirrel-cage blowers. If light escapes from vents, give venting a 90-degree turn and paint the vent black where it turns. This will disappear all unwanted light. Ozone-treated air should discharge through a roof vent or chimney to decrease ground level odors. See "Ozone Generators". Be careful when installing a ceiling vent or when venting out chimney. Light shining out the chimney and around roof vents looks very suspicious!

Security Alert Stop pungent smells with an ozone generator. "All electric" homes are few and far between. Electrical use information from previous tenants might be available from the electric company. On the average, growers in the US can use one 1000-watt lamp per bedroom. This means a two bedroom home can host 2000 watts a three bedroom home 3000 watts, etc. Unhook the dryer and other appliances that draw much electricity. Turn the water heater down to 120 degrees and take showers at the gym.

Stealing power from the electric company causes even more exposure than paying for it! The extra risk is insane and it's wrong to steal! Fortunate growers use the Equalizer, a device that makes electricity more efficient, see box. Manufactured by Western Water Farms, in BC, Canada, 1800-533-9301, Ext. 1, will lower the amount of current recorded that the line is drawing. In other words, route your grow room electricity through this device and pay half the electrical bill. Very slick little unit! The reports on electricity savings on this device have been incredible.

urity Alert

Sec Secu! Do not steal electricity! Thermal Imaging Devices Now relatively inexpensive (about $13,000) thermal imaging devices are becoming more affordable for smaller police forces. Thermal-imaging devices have been used legally to measure the heat signature escaping from structures. This invasive "evidence" is used with other "evidence" to secure a search warrant. A recent Supreme Court decision declared the use of thermal imaging devices unconstitutional. Such heat sensing devices cannot be used to secure a search warrant for the interior of a private building. Super Size Secret: Grow efficiently and maximize all effort and expense to harvest a minimum of 0.5 grams per watt of light in the flowering room every month. One last bit of simple security detail: grow efficiently! Growers should harvest 0.5 grams of dried bud every month for each watt of light in the flowering room. Growers that do not harvest this much are cheating themselves and must master the basics of growing. Always grow fewer than 99 total plants. Federal laws require a five-year minimum sentence with no parole when convicted of growing 100 1000 plants.

“If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible; who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time; who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer. It's the answer told by lines that stretched around schools and churches in numbers this nation has never seen; by people who waited three hours and four hours, many for the very first time in their lives, because they believed that this time must be different; that their voice could be that difference. It's the answer spoken by young and old, rich and poor, Democrat and Republican, black, white, Latino, Asian, Native American, gay, straight, disabled and not disabled - Americans who sent a message to the world that we have never been a collection of Red States and Blue States: we are, and always will be, the United States of America. It's the answer that led those who have been told for so long by so many to be cynical, and fearful, and doubtful of what we can achieve to put their hands on the arc of history and bend it once more toward the hope of a better day. It's been a long time coming, but tonight, because of what we did on this day, in this election, at this defining moment, change has come to America. President Barack Obama November 4, 2008

Santa BARBARA

With so many places to go and things to see, where in southern California can you get away to for the weekend without spending a lot of time to get there and not a lot of money while you're there? Santa Barbara. By Damien Phillips

W

ith it's beautiful beach, historic buildings, winery's and hotels, you can't help but to take advantage of this vacation getaway that is for most, right in our backyard. From Los Angles, Santa Barbara is approximately 95 miles away which is about an hour and a half drive up the 101 freeway. Perfect for a quick weekend getaway.

W

ith lots of hotels to fit any budget, you will find everything from a cozy room just to rest or an all out home away from home complete with hot tub and bedroom view of the pacific. Just 10 miles south on the 101 freeway is a city called Carpinteria. When Santa Barbara is packed full of vacationers and tourist, I recommend hotel accommodations there where it is less crowded & only minutes away. The main artery through Santa Barbara is State street. You will find everything you need there to fulfill your shopping needs and your appetite. There are plenty of stores, shops and restaurants to keep your credit card sliding without you worrying too much about your budget.

I

've been to Santa Barbara a few times and I just love the atmosphere. The people are friendly. The beach and pier is a must see. The restaurants are great. Their 5 star hotels are excellent. Plus there are wineries, historic buildings and a zoo! My favorite is the pier and beach. Sometimes its filled with people who display their artwork for sale. Everything from paintings to sculptures. There is a place at the beginning of State street where you can rent bicycles, trikes and those four wheeled pedal driven carts. They make it easier to get around. The night life is also great. There are bars and clubs on State street. With so many things to do and great things to see in Santa Barbara, I guarantee once you visit you will already be planning your next trip back. I know I did.

Cannabis Butter “CannaButter Recipe - 1lb of unsalted butter. - 2cups of water. - 1 ounce of cannabis. Obviously the better product you use the better the butter will be. **Proper Clothing Is a MUST. When you have fats and water together they tend to be very volatile and burning your arms is not a part of this recipe. So please use HOT GLOVES and long sleeves as you may or may not accidentally burn yourself.**

Materials you will need: - A strong grinder to grind the Cannabis material. - A stove to heat the CannaButter. - A small or medium sized slow cooker/crock pot. - A measuring cup. - A whisk or a large fork to mix the material with the water/butter solution in the pot. - Cheese cloth to strain the material before cooling. - A bowl large enough to hold and cool the CannaButter material. - A space in your refrigerator to cool and separate the water from butter. - A heavy-duty plastic wrap to handle and compress the CannaButter into a smaller, easier to handle shape. - A freezable container to store the material - A space in your freezer to store the finished product.

To Prepare: We'll begin by using the coffee grinder to grinding the Cannabis material into a fine powder. Make your Cannabis into a fine powder. Using an electric coffee grinder dedicated to the purpose of grinding Cannabis or cleaning one very well. You basically want a bowl of very, very fine Cannabis material.

Cooking: Place 2cups of water and your butter in your slow cooker and simmer until the butter melts. Once the butter is melted, reduce the heat to a very place the slow cooker on it’s low setting so that when covered the CannaButter will simmer but not boil. We will now add the ground Cannabis material to the water and butter solution...Once you add the Cannabis powder you will whisk and mix it into the pot thoroughly, so that there are no clumps and nothing stuck to the bottom, place the lid on the pot and leave the heat on a minimum temperature. The CannaButter is now ready to simmer and cook for 22-24 hours. This amount of time is important. It is required to extract the THC from the finely ground Cannabis. However, you do not want to cook the CannaButter any longer than 24 hours, after 24 hours the THC will degrade and the butter will go bitter. During this 24-hour cooking period you will need to check on the CannaButter every few hours to ensure that the boil is not to strong and to ensure that the butter has not reduced too much. If you find the solution reducing faster than expected it does not hurt to add a few tablespoons of water over the 24hour period.

* makes approximately 350g of medium-grade strength CannaButter

Extraction: Once you have simmered the CannaButter for long enough, turn the heat off. Let the solution sit for 2-4 minutes and remove it from the heat. USE APPROPRIATE CLOTHING, AS THIS IS WHERE YOU CAN BURN YOURSELF... You are now ready to extract the used Cannabis material from the CannaButter solution.. Place the cheesecloth over an open bowl and ensure that when the liquid is poured through the cheesecloth will not go with it. The idea here is to strain the solution using the cheesecloth so that you will not have bits of cannabis in the solution. Most of the THC is extracted by now. Once the solution has been strained through the cheesecloth and the material collected, you will have a solution in a bowl and cheesecloth full of soggy Cannabis material. Squeeze and extract as much of the solution from the cheesecloth and material as possible. The butter solution is what you want, not the bi-product, which is the soggy Cannabis. Remove as much of the solution as possible into the bowl.

* For a strong CannaButter, adjust the amount of Cannabis you use in accordance with the strength of butter you would like.

Cooling: Place the bowl with the CannaButter solution into your reserved space in your refrigerator and let it cool for a few hours, even overnight. This process will separate the fats from the water. During this process you will be able to see the progress of the butter as it cools, much like watching Jell-O go firm. However, you want to let it sit long enough to ensure the complete separation of the fats from the water. The fat is the CannaButter. Removing Your Butter and Storing: Removing the butter from the bowl may seem a bit tricky...but will be considerably less messy if you use the heavy-duty plastic wrap to handle the now solid butter. Simply remove enough plastic and use it like a doggy bag to remove the top slab of CannaButter from the bowl. Pat the CannaButter dry to remove any excess water. Now use the plastic wrap to compress the CannaButter into a smaller more manageable size. Store in a freezable, airtight container or Mason jar.

KEEP FROZEN AT ALL TIMES. If kept frozen the butter will not go bad or lose any potency before you get around to using it. The butter will melt quickly once it warms up, so handle it quickly and keep it in the freezer as much as possible.

N E E GR Vision

Herbs are essential for healthy living, and it also adds spice to foods for a desired taste. Studies have shown Chamomile, Thyme, Golden Seal and even Cayenne have contributed to wellness. Trees are a great resource for fruits, nuts, wood and paper. It provides homes for animals and insects in the land of plenty – how long will it last? To consume the resources, America would have to extensively purchase internationally to keep up with the demand. The perception is altered when you simply put on your Spliff Shades… Seeing Green…Think Green…The Green movement is the perception of recycling, reducing and reusing. Adjust your shades and peep this out: It is estimated that one cord makes 250 copies of the Sunday New York Times, or 942 1-pound books. How long does it take for a tree to become 8 feet tall? HEMP grows 6-12 feet in 4 months. It can produce a host of products such as cloth, rope, paint, and soap – don’t exclude paper! The same paper products currently made from 100 year old forests could be made from HEMP grown in 120 days.

Are we seeing things clearly now? I could go on and on about the benefits of growing HEMP and its positive effects it can have on the world at large. Learning more about HEMP will broaden our horizons and advance our technologies with using our natural resources to save our planet. Go Green!

Recycle – items that are not biodegradable, such as plastics and metals Reduce – the consumption of materials especially when other resources are available. Reuse – the vision, making it habitual.

By: Tona Phillips *cultivation of industrial Hemp for fiber and for grain in France

Everytime a tree is cut down to make paper products, we become one step closer to officially making our rain forests obsolete. Every action has a reaction - demolishing trees causes a chain reaction to the animals and even the air we breathe. Despite what people think, ONE person can cause a chain reaction! Be an example, start making small changes that will have a major effect on our planet. At SPLIFF, we are dedicated to the cause whch is why our magazine is digital, and we support the use of recycled and organic products. - Love, Peace and Green! Melissa Phillips
