FROM THE EDITOR

THE RESET RIDE More and more, I find myself struggling with my time management or lack thereof. As a family man and a business owner, time is always fleeting… There just never seems to be enough of it. The often overwhelming sensation of feeling that I’m drowning in never-ending lists of things that need to get down, never mind the things that I want to… is intense.

It’s never more than an hour in totality, usually in the late morning, before lunch. But in that time, I flush my brain of the world’s toxicity, take a deep breath and realign myself. When I return, I enjoy my lunch and perhaps an espresso before I address the business end of the rest of my day.

The Reset Ride is throttle therapy at its best. I’ve Thank the Universe for motorcycles! noticed a massive difference in my approach to life on the days when I can’t get my session No matter how chaotic my work week is, no in. I’m quite memorable, honestly. matter how heavy my load is… I make a point to set aside time to get in a brief but spirited It’s a shame that the rest of the world doesn’t ride several times throughout the week. This know about this… ride serves no other purpose than to just clear my head, shake off the cobwebs and disrupt Best, the bullshit that I often have to deal with. Let’s Allan call it my Reset Ride. @mrblackmosesofficial 12 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | APRIL 2022

INDUSTRY NEWS YAMAHA XSR900 – FIRST LOOK

THE RETRO 2022 YAMAHA XSR900 GIVES hidden passenger footpegs that swing up A DOFF OF THE CAP TO GRAND PRIX under the seat to give a single-seat look when you’re riding alone. LEGEND, CHRISTIAN SARRON. You certainly can’t fault Yamaha for giving its past racers some kudos. The first XSR900 gave a firm nod to King Kenny Roberts with the yellow and black "Speedblock" color scheme, and now it’s the turn of French legend Christian Sarron, who raced the iconic Sanauto Gauloises Yamaha 500 against Eddie Lawson, Wayne Rainey and Wayne Gardner in the 1980s. The new XSR900’s Legend Blue color scheme is the first thing you’ll notice about the new XSR. The second is this is basically an MT-09 in drag — a good thing indeed. That model was totally overhauled for 2021, and now it’s the XSR’s turn to get the goodies. That means the new 890 cc inline-triple motor, new chassis and full electronics suite that includes traction, slide, wheelie and brake control, plus cruise control and up and down quick shifter, comes standard in XSR. Full LED lighting abounds, with a full color 3.5-inch TFT display letting you know all the vitals. A nice touch, among many, is the

Yamaha’s fitted lighter 10-spoke wheels that reduce unsprung weight for better turning, cornering and braking performance, while the suspension is taken care of by a fully adjustable 41 mm KYB fork up front and a KYB shock at the back. The good news is, Yamaha will be bringing the XSR to market in April of 2022 for an MSRP of $9999, which is banging value. You can have the black and red Raven colors (which I suspect my Editor, Black Moses will be going for), but I’m firmly on the Legend Blue color scheme — I always wanted to be a 1980s 500cc Grand Prix racer. Yamaha’s also given its junior XSR700 a quick once over, but it’s basically the same as before. The dash has been repositioned for better visibility, there’s a new set of switch blocks and the brake discs are now larger 298 mm units. The 2022 XSR700 is offered in Raven and will begin arriving in dealerships this December for $8,799 MSRP.

THE PRESS ROOM: INDUSTRY NEWS ARC VECTOR ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE

BRITAIN'S ARC VEHICLES VOLLEYS THE EV MARKET WITH THE IMPRESSIVELY ENGINEERED AND EXECUTED ARC VECTOR MOTORCYCLE. The EV market is growing and contributions are coming in from all over the globe. Hailing from Great Britain, Arc Vehicles is making some notable noise with its Arc Vector. Of the many bespoke design elements of the Arc Vector, that made its debut at EICMA in 2018, the one that stands out is that the battery is the chassis. The full carbon fiber monocoque battery chassis design (fully reg100 certified) optimizes form and function. The battery cells are provided by Samsung and produce an output of 399 volts and feature adaptive regeneration. On a 40 minute full charge (global standard CCS charging interface), the expected range of travel is 200 miles in urban use and 120 miles on the highway, with a top speed of 124 miles per hour and a zero to sixty acceleration of 3.2 seconds. Tipping the scales at 485 pounds, the Arc Vector employs performance components for premium handling and breaking. Utilizing a direct connection scissor and upper wishbone and hub center steering configuration, the 16 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | APRIL 2022

carbon fiber front and rear swing arms harmonize with the Ohlins steering damper, as well as the front and rear Ohlins TTX suspension for optimum handling. Brembo Stylema braking components formulate the braking assembly. The electronics suite of rider aids includes ABS, traction control, selectable ride and environment modes. But Arc Vehicles didn't stop there. In partnership with Hedon, Arc introduces the Arc Zenith Helmet with projection-based heads up display, which is managed via the controls on the bike. The heads up display can also be voice-activated. Then there is the Arc Origin riding jacket. Arc partnered with Knox for this protective apparel that offers deeper rider-to-ride immersion. The Arc Origin operates on three levels: Urban Mode (safety, alerting the rider to dangers), Sports Mode (dynamic position feedback based on G-Force related data), and Euphoric Mode (play music through the haptics). I'm liking the looks of the Arc Vector. Each one is hand built to order according to the owner's specifications. Pre-orders are now being accepted.

DAMON COLOSSUS HYPERFIGHTER DAMON DEBUTS ITS SECOND ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE I N ST R E E T F I G H T E R F O R M, T H E CO LOSSU S HYPERFIGHTER. Before the recently released Colossus Hyperfighter, Canadian outfit Damon launched the Hypersport, its first electric motorcycle in 2019. The Hypersport was dabbed with technological advances as Damon dubbed it the safest bike ever made. The Hypersport featured an artificial intelligence technology titled Co-Pilot that used handlebar haptics, windscreen LEDs, radars, as well as front and rear cameras to alert the rider of possible dangers on the road. Damon unveiled its latest EV, the Colossus Hyperfighter at the Consumer Electronics Show. Packed with a lot of the same and revised tech as the Hypersport, the Colossus is presented as a naked, streetfighter model. The Damon Colossus Hyperfighter, priced at $35,000, is built upon Damon's Hyperdrive powertrain. Damon's spec sheet states that the Hyperdrive powertrain has an output of 200 horses. To that, the Hyperfighter benefits with a travel range of 146 miles, goes zero to sixty in three seconds and has a top speed of 170 miles per hour. The Hyperdrive is also maintenance-free.

The Hyperdrive has decent charging times. A DC fast charge will yield an 80% battery. Using a 240 volt Level 2 charger for 2.5 hours, the results will be closer to 90%. Plug the Hyperdrive into a Level 1 charger for 15 hours and you'll get a 90% charge. With the Hyperdrive powertrain at its core, the Damon Colossus Hyperfighter employs a bevy of performance elements that include Ohlins suspension components and Brembo brake assemblies. The suite of electronic rider aids has several highlights. At the forefront, in addition to the Co-Pilot AI system, is the Shift feature that allows the rider to change the ergonomics of the bike from an aggressive sport riding position to one that is more suitable for long range rides. Other bells include an anti-lock brake system, traction control and ride modes. The Colossus offers wireless connectivity and data acquisition with their mobile app. System updates can be retrieved over the air. You can reserve your own Damon Colossus Hyperfighter now via the manufacturer's website where you can also check out the Colussus' siblings: The Unlimited 20 ($25,000) and the Unlimited 15 ($19,000).

It was in 1974 when the Kawasaki super4 900 received the moniker of Z1. The Z, being the last letter of the English alphabet, was based on the notion that there was nothing coming after it as, at the time, it was the ultimate. The Kawasaki Z line continued to grow and introduced more models to the range. In 2014, the Z line took on a new direction with the Z1000 which featured Sugomi styling. Thisl blazed the trail for Kawasaki's dominance in the super/hyper naked class. To mark 50 years of legacy, Kawasaki announced limited production runs of the Z900, Z650, Z900RS and the Z650RS for 2022. Both the Z900 ($9,499.00) and Z650 ($8,299.00) are offered in an exciting "Firecracker Red". The Z900RS ($12,049.00) and the Z650RS ($9,249.00) will be available in a "Fireball" paint scheme, similar to the original 1972 Kawasaki Z1. The 2022 Kawasaki Z 50th anniversary motorcycles will include a coffee table book commemorating 50 years of the Z line of bikes. 20 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | APRIL 2022

THE FIRST RIDE: TIGER 1200 RANGE

SO HERE I am in Albufeira, Portugal for the launch of Triumph's new line of Tiger 1200 adventure bikes. In the words of Zack Courts from Revzilla, “Alonzo, why are you here?” Well, Zack, Triumph called and the trip was free. The GT series are street-oriented adventure bikes. There’s the base GT, the GT Pro and the GT Explorer. The Rally Bikes are the off-roaders. The Rally Pro and Rally Explorer The most obvious difference is the cast wheels on the GT bikes versus the spoked wheels on the Rallys. The GT front wheel is 19 inches while the Rally's front wheel is 21. Both use an 18 inch rear. The Explorer models both have a 7.9-gallon tank while the GT and Pro models hold 5.3 gallons. The Rally bikes have 8.7 inches of suspension travel, the GT offers 7.9 inches. The engines are the same and tuned the same. Triumph triple engines are almost the perfect compromise between the torque of a twin and the top end of a four. Triumph claims the new models to be 25 kilos or about 50 pounds less than the Tigers they replace. Weight savings start with the frame and all other components are lightened. Power was never a problem. I stalled a few times on the off-road ride but that was me being in the wrong gear, not the bike. Did I mention I have no business being off-road? There are tons of features fitting the high-end bikes: a 7 inch TFT screen, lean sensing traction control with cornering ABS, quick-shifter, keyless ignition, cruise control, heated seats, heated grips and hill hold. There are modes for street, rain, sport and off road with a rider mode in which you set the parameters. The Rally bikes also have an off-road pro mode. These modes are for engine management, ABS and traction control, and of course suspension. Within each suspension mode, damping can be fine-tuned with a simple sliding scale between comfort and sport. I found the comfort settings a bit too soft and stayed between normal which is the midway setting and sport. The adjustments are easily controlled with a home button, a mode button and a small joystick on the left bar. It’s simpler than it sounds and can be changed on the fly. There are also two different views for the instrument panel both highlighting the tach outside and speed inside. Something I 26 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | APRIL 2022

haven’t seen before is a switch between a daytime led running light and LED headlights for night riding. We didn’t ride at night so I can’t tell you how bright the headlight is or how the switches look after dark. We’re told they are backlit. The seats have a high and low adjustments. The bikes are noticeably narrow for their size making it easy to put a foot down at a stop. Then again, I’m 6’3 it’s always easy to put my big feet down at a stop. The bike was comfortable in the high position though I noticed on the GT Sport model my knee would occasionally hit the fairing. No problem with the GT Explorer. The Rally Explorer was the most comfortable for me with a little more suspension travel and well-spaced ergonomics. Ok time to talk riding... We had the GT Pro the GT Explorer and Rally Explorer to ride in the street and the Rally Explorer for off-road. No base models for us. The GT Pro felt most like a standard naked bike. If you’re coming off of sportbikes and now don’t fold up like you used to, this bike will be most familiar to you. It’s fast, handling is stable and smooth. The GT Explorer is a bigger version. A huge 7.9-gallon tank and engine guards give the bike a much bigger feel. More comfortable for me since I’m a big guy. I’d say a fat guy but my therapist says I should be nice to myself. The Rally Explorer feels bigger than the GT with its extra suspension travel and bigger front wheel. It was most comfortable for me. I didn’t hear anyone in the group complain the bikes were too big and the size range of riders went from Chris at 5’7 who can tour on a 400 cc sportbike to myself. We also had a woman Eva in the group and she was fine on them so I’d say the sizes are manageable and with the different models there’s something for everyone. One rider, who shall remain nameless, had a low-speed tip over on a Rally Explorer. He tried to catch it. The bike didn’t fall but unfortunately, he pulled a hamstring in the attempt. These bikes are lighter than they used to be but still big and rather tall bikes. That’s probably the biggest change if you’re coming from a sportbike or cruiser. Adventure bikes are tall. The Triumphs feel bigger than the Multistrada but not as big as my BMW GS Adventure. Now I should tell you I’m a huge adventure bike fan. They work great in the city. They absorb bumps and you can easily see over most cars. These bikes handle great and it’s always fun surprising sportbike riders when you can hang on your big adventure bike. It’s also nice to not hurt after 200 APRIL 2022| SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 31

THE FIRST RIDE: TIGER 1200 RANGE miles. Riding canyons and hitting a bump in a corner doesn’t upset the bike at all. They have cornering ABS, so trail braking isn’t a problem. I didn’t try rain mode. It didn’t rain. Throttle response was definitely smoother in street mode than sport mode. These bikes are easy to ride confidently fast. A bit about the roads around Albufeira, Portugal where we rode. They were fantastic, smooth fast and empty. Traffic in town was nothing. There were some roundabouts. Once you get used to them riding was no problem at all except maybe for the road signs in Portuguese. I have no gift for language but I’m very good at following the guy in front of me so I didn’t get lost. Once we hit the hills... Wow! 30 to 50 mph sweepers with very few blind corners and no traffic to speak of. Beautiful scenery, trees and farms. The kinds of roads you can ride all day. You can speed up and play road racer or kick back and enjoy the scenery. Just change your bike mode and fine tune the damping. I didn’t notice a huge difference between the GT bikes. It’s funny, I went in thinking the GT Explorer would be the perfect bike for me. A big streetoriented adventure bike. I was probably at my fastest on the GT Pro as I felt closer to the ground. I did have to be careful of dragging my toes. Bigfoot problems. The GT Explorer eliminated the foot and fairing problem I had. My personal favorite bike of the group was the Rally Explorer. I'm used to the big front wheel so that wasn’t a problem. It won’t turn as quick as a 17 incher with sport rubber but then this isn’t that bike. I think you’d have to be pushing pretty hard to have a problem with any of these bikes in sport mode on any canyon road. Don’t worry, you’ll keep up with your sportbike friends. You’ll feel the size in the tightest corners otherwise these things can fly. You get to a point where you realize it’s not the bike as much as the rider and anyone short of expert should be fine on the street with these. You’ll definitely be more comfortable heading home than your buddy on his superbike. Take the long way home. Sure his 200 hp rocketship has a higher top speed that you may never see... But look at the pain in his face as you ride the freeway home while you’re smiling in comfort mode with cruise control. And if you have to pick up some groceries, clothes, or whatever else on the way home, there’s a full range of luggage for these bikes. I’m telling you, adventure bikes do it all. Speaking of doing it all. We went off-road riding on Friday. I’m going to say I’ve done maybe 10 off-road rides in my life. I’m talking gravel roads or groomed dirt. Nothing heavy duty. No climbing mountains or rocks. I’m 34 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | APRIL 2022

a city kid. In my mind, as society progressed we paved the road and I am good with that so this is in no way an expert's off-road opinion... I loved it! We rode the Rally Explorers with Michelin Anakee Wild tires off-road. Triumph provided excellent instructors for our beginner's group. Eva was the ringer who had some off-road experience. Dustin, who was maybe 5 days more experienced than I, learned as we went. The first thing I learned is setup really matters. You stand on the pegs off-road and the Triumph techs rotating the bars to achieve more height really helped me find a balanced position. I liked the big tank to brace my knees against. Some things off-road are counterintuitive to a street rider. In the dirt, the rear brake is key for stopping and stability. I had one low-speed tip over caused by my instinct to hit the front brake and the dirt trails instinct was to tuck my front wheel and teach me a lesson. I wasn't hurt. The bike was fine and now my AStars Andes suit has some experience on it. Badge of honor. The nice thing is that in the dirt you tip over at 15 mph rather than crash at 80 mph. I also tipped over in a muddy water crossing but I blame that on Dustin slowing down in front of me and killing my momentum. I think it’s a testament to the balance and ease of control of these bikes to see we were learning to ride on 1200 cc adventure bikes and never found the bikes to be the problem. One of the marks of a great bike is not feeling or fighting the bike under you so you can concentrate on the ride. The Tigers were like that on or off-road. Another off-road trick I learned was to use a higher gear and lower rpm for throttle control. It worked for me. I stalled a time or two but again that was me learning no fault of the bike or the engine. At every stop, we were laughing and every segment was a bit smoother and faster. Downhill riding takes much more control than uphill. By the end of the day, we were going downhill on a single-track goat path. Now I wasn’t happy about it as there was a perfectly good gravel road right next to us, but we did it. The names of the bikes fit what I would call my first time riding in Europe, an Adventure. These Tigers and their range, from tame to roaring, are the adventure. APRIL 2022| SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 37

THE FIRST RIDE: HYPERMOTARD 950 SP

MOTORCYCLES ARE SUPPOSED to be fun, right? They’re supposed to invoke a feeling of joy. The kind of joy you felt as a kid when all you had to worry about was finding and locating more joy. Some bikes are better at this than others. While some try hard to impress. It’s those bikes that impart that joy so effortlessly that we gravitate towards. Much like people. And on that note, ladies and gentlemen, let me introduce you to today’s main course: the Ducati Hypermotard 950 SP. The Ducati Hypermotard 950 SP is the most laugh-your-ass-off-tickle-you-in-the-sweet-spot motorcycle you can get this side of financial ruin. The Hypermotard 950 SP is the kind of bike your mom warned you about. If it were a person, it’d be that kid you hanged around as a teenager that you knew deep down was no good, but you couldn’t help loving every second you two got up to god-knows-what horrors together. It’s an absolute middle finger to sense and sensibility. Life beats you down enough as it is, shouldn’t this bike lift you up? The Ducati Hypermotard 950 SP is mechanically identical to the 950 and 950 RVE (that we don’t get in America) save for the gorgeous gold 48 42 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | APRIL 2022

Costing you a handsome $17,495 (some $3500 more than the base model and not including the Termignoni muffler our test bike came with), you’re definitely paying for the privilege of shredding your license at the drop of the clutch because, I assure you, this bike is way more fun with the wheelie control switched off… You sit right over the front of the Hyper in much the same style as a KTM 450 SX-F. You’re so forward you feel you could almost grab the front axle with your heels, and the riding position means you can steer a Hypermotard through tight and twisty sections of tarmac like a, you guessed it, KTM 450 SX-F. The Ducati Hypermotard 950 SP simply annihilates slow to medium speed corners. This motorcycle is the definition of hooligan, and a clear and present threat to your license should you use it incorrectly. The seat is like a plank, so after an hour at best you’ll be looking for the nearest stopping point. As the ride position is much like a dirt bike you’re essentially a massive sail on the freeway, which makes for pretty tiring riding after a while. That’s not what this bike was designed for. It was meant to spend as little time as possible on the center of the tire, preferring instead to locate the tightest, snottiest switchbacks and munch them for a predinner snack. Despite this hooligan demeanor, the Hypermotard APRIL 2022| SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 45

can play nice just as easily. There are few finer bikes for just ripping down to the shop to grab a few supplies as you’re seated nice and tall and the motor is mapped about as sweetly as when god created Scarlett Johansson. The initial touch of the throttle is delightfully smooth in either of the three riding modes of the full-house, 114 hp Sport, Touring or 75 hp Urban (you can take a wild guess which mode I spent most of my time in), and is a far cry from when cracking the throttle on a Ducati L-twin at low speed/low revs was like firing a handgun. And when matched to the Ducati Quick Shift EVO, life is most certainly good. Although I did have more than a couple of issues trying to find neutral when coming to the traffic lights, which was quite the annoyance. But it was nowhere near enough to dampen my enthusiasm for this motorcycle. There are so many more bikes in Ducati’s lineup that do one thing way better than the Hyper (Multistrada for touring, Panigale for racing, Diavel for cruising), but none make you grin like the Joker himself than the Hyper. The Ducati Hypermotard 950 SP exists for no other reason than to make you laugh your ass off. And that’s as good a reason as any in my book. APRIL 2022| SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 49

BRANDON PAASCH WINS THE 2022 DAYTONA 200

BRANDON PAASCH REPEATS AS HE WINS THE speeding by Hayes, Morais, and Petersen. It was DAYTONA 200 BACK TO BACK, THIS TIME ON one of the most thrilling race finishes that I've ever witnessed. TOBC RACING'S TRIUMPH STREET TRIPLE RS. In one of the most thrilling finishing laps of not just the Daytona 200, but in all professional road racing, Brandon Paasch came from fourth place to win the 80th running of the Daytona 200. Brandon Paasch crossed the line .007 seconds ahead of the runner-up, Cameron Petersen before Sheridan Morais completed the race in third place.

Brandon Paasch started the day in fourth position, behind Jake Gagne, Sheridan Morais, and pole-sitter and 2010 Daytona 200 Winner, Josh Herrin. Gagne retired from the race after a few laps (he suffered from back pain after a crash during the morning warm-up session). Herrin, after being in the lead pack of riders for most of the race, finished in tenth place.

Josh Hayes finished in fourth place which is a heroic “Honestly, I wasn’t sure the whole time. There were a achievement considering that he started the race in few times I did try to draft them, and I couldn’t get past. He continued, "I saw Cam (Petersen) had a pretty big gap, so I was just sitting behind Sheridan (Morais) and Josh (Hayes), and I was just like, ‘I see them closing. I don't know if we’ve got enough time. I’m going to do what I can do and hopefully I can just draft these two the line.’ Then I see Cam coming closer and closer and closer and I just wait, just wait. Keep saving the tires as much as I can through that last lap. Honestly, when Sheridan and everybody started rolling out of the gap, I was a little bit like, ‘I don't know where to

put myself,’ but I saw Hayes was up high, so I kind of cut below him. I was like, I’m in a prime spot. I’m behind the front two boys. Once they went, I was like, ‘game time’." The 2022 Daytona 200 Winner concluded, "The Triumph pulls really hard when you go to the gas. So, I knew I was maybe going to have a chance at picking up mile per hour a little bit quicker than them guys. Just perfect. Just like last year.”

THE GRID: QATAR 2022 RACE REPORT THE MEASURE OF greatness in sport is leaving a lasting impression on that sport that supersedes your career. Valentino Rossi's impression was felt in full effect on Sunday night in Qatar for the 2022 MotoGP season opener. Rossi, the nine-time World Champion retired from the sport in 2021 after an illustrious 26-year career. Some, well most consider him to be the greatest of all time AKA the GOAT and on Sunday, Rossi did what the great ones do. They continue to leave their stamp on the sport. How so? First, Rossi's girlfriend, Francesca Sofia Novello delivered the couple's first child earlier in the week and then... the Italians proceeded to sweep every category in Sunday night's season opener. How’s that for “The Rossi Effect”? Moto3 Andrea Migno started the evening off with a bang by picking up his first win in 5 years and his AARP card! Migno has been around Moto3 since 2015 and has seen his share of bad luck in the class. But Sunday he put it all together to gather his second-ever win. Bravo, bravo, bravo! Well deserved, Migno. Well deserved. Moto2 The Italian onslaught continued with Celestino Vietti destroying the field by over six seconds and having a search party called for the rest of the field. Vietti just might be the most talented of all the Italian riders. Look for him to make a push for the championship as the season winds down. MotoGP There is no doubt that this is the most talented field MotoGP has produced since I can remember. All eyes were on a healthy Marc Marquez to possibly gather a win in the desert. Or the defending World Champion Fabio Quartararo to possibly take the opening night honors. But it was Enea Bastianini who raced a nearly flawless race on Sunday night in Qatar. “The Beast” won an emotional race, honoring his late team owner, Fausto Gresini, who died of Covid-19 last year, and whose wife, Nadia Padovani, now 62 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | APRIL 2022

owns the team. Bastianini would not be denied. He nursed and nursed his tyres until it was time for them to be fed asphalt. His tyres left with a full stomach as “The Beast’ picked off his opponents one by one until he eventually passed race leader Pol Espargaro with four laps to go and never looked back, completing the Italian sweep of the Grand Prix of Qatar. The Qatar MotoGP season opener demonstrates that MotoGP is still the best show on asphalt. Keep an eye out for the upcoming Amazon Prime docuseries, MotoGP Unlimited to further the point. If Sunday night is any indication, MotoGP fans around the globe will be treated to perhaps the best season in the history of the sport Strap in, GP Geeks. This season is going to be lit!
