WEST SIDE RIDING On a recent press ride in California, I was reminded of how fortunate West Coast riders are. It's not just the weather, which is wonderful... well at least every time I've visited. But the element that I appreciate the most is the roads.
sweeping elevation changes, breathtaking views... you get the point. It's a rider's heaven, short of riding on the track.
I've ridden in just about every section of the United States and I have to be honest, those California Canyons always seem to leave me wanting more. My relationships with those roads are always short-lived as press launches are usually only a day in length. So I only have about eight hours to familiarize myself with the bike that I am reviewing, as well as the refamiliarize myself with the ride route that is guaranteed to encompass technical turning,
Perhaps, I shouldn't rely so much on the press launches to schedule some California riding. Maybe I should schedule a little West Coast riding tour of my own.

I hope that you California riders know just how good you have it!
I like that idea. I like that idea a lot. Best, Allan @mrblackmosesofficial

DUCATI UNICA CREATE THE DUCATI OF YOUR DREAMS
YOU CAN NOW HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO CREATE A TRULY UNIQUE, ONE OF A KIND DUCATI VIA THE DUCATI UNICA PROGRAM. Ducati Unica is a customization program that offers enthusiasts a method in which they can create a motorcycle all their own, unique and unreplicable. For those who are accepted into the program, you visit the Centro Stile Ducati or Ducati Style Center in person for consultations with the designers and technicians that are going to build the custom Ducati of your dreams based on your specs. Once the process is completed, each Ducati Unica, complete with a certificate of uniqueness is delivered to you. Because of the special uniqueness of this prospect, in general, the opportunity is limited and there is a level of criteria that must be met. Ducati Unica accepts a very limited number of requests
per year for a number of factors but mainly because of the "uniqueness and the obsessive attention to detail" given to each project. Additionally, the design request must remain on-brand with Ducati's principles of style. "Design is a distinctive element of our creations. We wanted to give Ducatisti the chance to identify themselves even more with their own bike, making it a direct expression of each person’s individual style. Therefore, we created Ducati Unica, an exclusive program that testifies to the excellence of Made in Italy of which Ducati is a representative in the world. An exciting and unforgettable experience of customization to be experienced directly within our Centro Stile. The moment in which Ducatisti finally see their bike is very exciting for us at the Centro Stile and a source of great pride." - Andrea Ferraresi, Centro Stile Ducati Director. SCRAM 411, ROYAL ENFIELD'S FIRST ADV CROSSOVER - FIRST LOOK
ROYAL ENFIELD'S NEW SCRAM 411 IS A MID-SIZE SCRAMBLER BIKE WITH ADVENTURE RIDING IN ITS DNA Royal Enfield presents its first ADV crossover motorcycle in the all-new Scram 411. Powered by a fuel-injected, aircooled, 411 cc, single-cylinder engine, the Scram 411 looks to have plenty of "go" for the daily commute and a good amount of "let's do this" for exploring less than paved roads.
front and rear disc brake setup also contribute to the Scram 411's handling on both the asphalt and off. Other notable specs include an urban-styled single seat with room for both rider and passenger at a height of 31.2 inches. And the Scram 411 features a new digital and analog instrument cluster to display all vital bike information.
The Scram 411 houses its engine inside of a Harris Performance frame and employs a suspension assembly that consists of 41mm front telescopic forks and a rear link mounted mono-shock. The front end provides 7.8 inches of travel while the rear offers 7 inches of travel. Overall ground clearance is 7.8 inches.
“Most scrambler motorcycles focus only on aesthetics and looks. When we began work on the Scram 411, we were determined to create a motorcycle that would be distinct in design and purpose, and bring the best of rough-road capability to urban riding. With its distinctive look and design, playful colorways, accessible riding proposition, the Scram 411 is an ultimate ADV crossover for the urban environment.” - Mark Wells, Chief of Design at Royal Enfield.
That 7.8 inches of ground clearance is in part due to the 19inch front and 17 inch rear wheels, dressed in dual-purpose tires. These wheel specs as well as the dual-channel ABS

THE FIRST RIDE: SUZUKI GSX-S1000 SUZUKI HAS FINALLY B R O U G H T F O RT H THEIR NEW GSX-S1000 NAKED BIKE A YEAR AFTER THE REST OF THE WORLD GOT IT. IS IT A CASE OF GOOD THINGS COME TO THOSE WHO WAIT? YOU REALLY HAVE to feel for Suzuki and the 2015 GSX-S1000. Here was a motorcycle based heavily off the halo GSX-R1000K5 — probably the greatest hit in Suzuki’s list of greatest hits sportbikes — stripped of its bodywork and turned into a naked bike and… no one bought it. The GSX-S was hardly seen anywhere on the street after its 2015 release, which is one of motorcycling’s great shames because it really was a good bike. It got a very minor facelift in 2017, but until last year it was essentially the same bike as when it came out. Think about how much the naked bike game has changed since 2015. Suzuki’s OG naked hit the market at exactly the wrong time. As a sporty yet budget-conscious naked, it was properly outgunned both in hype and sales by super nakeds like the BMW S 1000 R or the Aprilia Tuono 26 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | MAY 2022

V4 Factory. But as the world slowly wakes up from that power-driven hangover, Suzuki may now have timed the market just right. The 2022 Suzuki GSX-S1000 isn’t totally new, but there are some very significant changes. Priced at a very tasty $11,299, you get a revamped engine with a flatter, fatter torque curve, new throttle maps and traction control, all-new edgy bodywork that’s got LED’s in the back and front via the new triple-stacked headlight system, and a revamped riding position via a new seat, tank, and handlebar position. It's quite a compact motorcycle, even though the seat height at 31.9 inches would lead you to believe otherwise. Nimble and agile in the twisties, the Suzuki GSX-S1000 rolls on KYB suspenders that are just the right side of firm, meaning you can especially rail long sweeping corners at will and not get too battered around on the freeway trying to get to those twisties. There’s no electronic suspension here, no sir, so you get this lovely feel at the ’bars when you’re really going for it. There’s no computer to dilute the feeling between you and the Dunlop Roadsmart II rubber, and it’s a refreshing feeling. One thing never in doubt is that 149 hp, 999cc inline four-cylinder motor. It feels and sounds old school, with tons of mid-range torque and relatively tall fourth and fifth gears which lets you just focus on the bends coming up than constantly searching for gears on the absolutely beautiful quick shifter Suzuki has developed for the GSX-S. Each shift is so light and precise—Suzuki should be congratulated for bringing this to market. There are three different engine modes and five possible traction control modes available to the rider via the Suzuki Intelligent Ride System (S.I.R.S.) settings, and there’s a noticeable change between each mode MAY 2022| SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 31

when you scroll through them. I settled on the middle mode of B, simply because A was too aggressive and C was not aggressive enough. You get all the same power in each mode, it’s just how quickly said power is delivered. This Suzuki GSX-S1000 doesn’t come with an IMU, so there’s no lean angle-sensitive TC or Cornering ABS. In truth, you really don’t miss their absence, but you do miss not having cruise control or the option to fit it after sale. A black mark must go against the dash. This is one of the hardest dashes to read at a glance I can remember for a very long time and is simply not up to the rest of the machine’s quality. If you have a high sun in the middle of the day, good luck reading what you need at a glance. It’s only when the sun begins to go down that the info becomes legible, which is just not good enough when something like a KTM RC390 meant for kids comes out with a proper color TFT display. While the dash is ultra-annoying — as is the lack of cruise control — the rest of the Suzuki GSX-S1000 is nicely executed. Yes, it’s got a bit of an old school feel but that’s a good thing. There’s a bit of rawness to the GSX-S, one that’s almost gone in modern naked biking, and considering it’s less than $12K for a 1000cc naked, that’s something to really consider. GRID NEWS DUCATI V21L MOTOE MAKES ITS DEBUT
THE DUCATI V21L MOTOE ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE PROTOTYPE IS INTRODUCED AT THE MISANO WORLD CIRCUIT MARCO SIMONCELLI. The new era in the electric revolution continues to take shape and we now have an idea of what's to come. Ducati and Dorna announced in October 2021 that the Bologna based brand was replacing Energica as the sole provider of electric motorcycles for the FIM MotoE World Cup, beginning in 2023. This week, Ducati unveiled its prototype, the Ducati V21L. Official Ducati pilot and test rider Michele Pirro had the honor of christening the V21L with its maiden test laps at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. He had this to say, "Testing the MotoE prototype on the circuit was a great thrill, because it marks the beginning of an important chapter in Ducati history. The bike is light and already has a good balance. Furthermore, the throttle connection in the first opening phase and the ergonomics are very similar to those of a MotoGP bike. If it weren't for the silence and for the fact that in this test, we decided to limit the power output to just 70% of performance, I could easily have 52 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | MAY 2022
imagined that I was riding my bike." Roberto Canè, Ducati's eMobility Director was also on hand for the testing, as he is the lead on the project. "We are experiencing a truly extraordinary moment. I find it hard to believe it is reality and still not a dream! The first electric Ducati on the track is exceptional not only for its uniqueness but also for the type of undertaking: challenging both for its performance objectives and for its extremely short timescales. Precisely for this reason, the work of the whole team dedicated to the project has been incredible and today's result repays us for the efforts made in recent months. We are certainly not finished yet; indeed, we know that the road ahead is still very long, but in the meantime, we have laid a first important 'brick'." Initial team notes include the challenges in the development and improvement of the electric motorcycle specs: size, weight, power, battery life. Ducati's goal for the V21L is to create a highperformance electric race motorcycle that is available to all riders competing in the FIM Enel MotoE World Cup.

THE GRID: AUSTIN 2022 RACE REPORT
AFTER THE CRAZINESS in Argentina that saw a reduced race weekend and a first time winner in Alex Esparago, MotoGP loaded up the cargo planes and flew north to Austin, Texas, a city that never knows it is hosting a MotoGP race... Which can be a good and bad thing. It's good for the riders who can’t move about freely in Europe, as opposed to no one knowing who they are in Austin except for race fans. Meanwhile, it's bad in the sense that, it doesn’t lend itself to attracting the occasional fan or people just looking for something to do. Austin is a strange bird, but a good strange.

After getting squeezed out of the holeshot, Beaubier was looking at a nice and tidy fourth place until a last-lap crash knocked him out of the points. American Joe Roberts placed eighth. MotoGP is the greatest show in motorsports, hands down but is overshadowed by Formula One!
