FROM THE EDITOR

recently had a conversation with a close friend about the Sturgis Rally. His sentiment toward the rally went pretty much, something like, “You can have all that… They don’t want us there!” Another conversation with a sponsor of mine included their inquiry of whether the rally was all Hell’s Angels, loose women, bikes, and shootouts.

I

I shared my experiences of the last five years with them, stressing that it harnesses all of the positive vibes that our culture has to offer. While there are not a lot of riders there that look me, shade or size, I’ve never felt out of place. This year, I noticed a few more of “us” sprinkled throughout the crowds. Hurray for us! Hurray for us all!

Amusing as it may seem, it's sad that our culture breeds such opinions. I was quick to inform my friend that in my five years of attending the rally, I have experienced nothing but love and acceptance.. even on a sportbike. My friend had never been to the rally, and I strongly encourage him to add it to his “did that shit” list. My sponsor was coming out to the rally for the first time, and they wanted to be as prepared as possible. I eased their concerns with the reality of while there are some wild scenes and that things can get crazy, mind you… that can happen anywhere… Sturgis is not like any television or film depiction.

While the Sturgis rally is not all “Wild Hogs,” it surely isn’t “Hell Ride.” For the record, I enjoy both of these movies as much as I enjoy “Biker Boyz” and yes, even “Torque.” If you have not these flicks, I suggest that you watch them and enjoy them strictly for their entertainment value. After a good hearty chuckle, starting making your plans for the 2019 Sturgis Rally. I’ll see you there.

YAMAHA ISSUES A RECALL FOR THE MT-07 AND XSR700 Loose bolts that connect the drive chain guard to the swingarm is the culprit of a recall issued by Yamaha for a selection of Yamaha Mt-07 and XSR700 motorcycles. The loose bolts could potentially cause the chain guard to contact the drive chain and break. Yamaha is contacting owners, and the dealer network has been instructed to replace the chain guard mounting bolts, free of charge.

The first time

my attention was in the year 2000. I was watching Mission Impossible 2, and just as the final action segment of the movie began, the bad guys give chase to Tom Cruise as he escapes from their semi-underground bunker/lair. His vehicle of choice, a 2000 Triumph Speed Triple. Defying all laws of physics and reality, it made for great action sequences and the manner of which John Woo directed the scenes shined a detailed spotlight on the Speed Triple, strictly for its aesthetic style. Fast forward almost 20 years to the 2018 Triumph Speed Triple RS 1050. Marketed as the most powerful Speed Triple ever, the RS leaves little to the imagination. Upon approach, the RS looks like it is waiting and ready for a bare-knuckle street fight. Stripped down to the necessities, the RS essentially a motor, frame, wheels, and controls… If it’s not needed, it’s not equipped with it. But what is bolted to the RS only accentuates its aggressive stance and purposeful presence. From the aerodynamic yet minimalistic headlight and under exhaust header cowling, the selected bits of carbon fiber to the reshaped fuel tank and high swept dual Arrow SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 25

THE FIRST RIDE: SPEED TRIPLE RS 1050 Exhaust pipes, the RS means business. Less is truly more. However, its what you don’t see on the surface that helps to raise the RS to one of the most user-friendly and functionally fun motorcycles in production. The workhorse of the RS is the inline three-cylinder, 1050cc engine. Look, numbers are essential, but I put my faith in feel. From the first twist of the throttle, you feel every bit of the 148 horses that are waiting to be unleashed. It caught me slightly off guard but didn’t run away from me. It was more of the RS letting me know what it is capable of and if wanted to do some things, it was more than ok with that. Well, it didn’t have to tell me twice. I rolled on the throttle, and it was effortless combustion of smooth and manageable power. With a responsive throttle in hand, I rode straight away to the closest Pennsylvania back roads that I could find. With me being a larger rider, there are some bikes that I take to more quickly than others, ergonomically speaking. Sitting on the RS, I was connected in the saddle, sitting in what I would call a sweet spot. With a seat height of just under 32.5 inches, I was not on top of the bike nor was I sunk into the saddle. I was right where I wanted to be. Being able to move around the bike and operate the controls with ease was one of many quality factors that made the RS a joy to ride. The brute, yet refined power of the RS is right on edge. In all honesty, the RS could be an asshole if it wanted to, and I would be completely fine with that. After all, the Speed Triple has hooligan tattooed all over its DNA. The impressive power output 28 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

is considerably smooth yet aggressive. The new gearbox and new clutchless shift assist made up and downshifting through the gears, effortless. Equipped with Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa tires, a Brembo Monobloc brake setup, not to mention fully adjustable Ohlins suspension on the front end and in the rear, the RS handling receives high praise. Stable and consistent, diving into and exiting corners is exhilarating in part due to the ABS and traction control. The cornering ABS working with the front end Brembo monoblocs gave significant feedback without a grabbing or stabbing feeling so that I could carry a decent amount of corner speed. Exiting corners, the traction SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 29

control allowed me to get back on the gas sooner. I believe in better riding through technology, and the inertial measurement unit (IMU) is the tech made of dreams! At lean or in a straight run, the RS hugs the road with confidence and authority. It's almost aware of itself and how well it performs. If it gave itself a high five, I wouldn’t be mad at it. The rider-friendly features continue with its all-new, high and low contrast, customizable full-color TFT dashboard display. You can select from six different display styles to suit your liking. The bar controls are backlit to help when riding at night and includes a mini joystick to toggle through the menu. From the controls switches, you can access the display menu functions, cruised control and the five riding modes: Rain, Road, Sport, Custom and Track modes. It’s one of the more attractive readout display I’ve seen in some time. The RS features a new Key Fob for keyless operation. The 34 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

Fob needs to be in close proximity to function properly. A warning will appear on the screen if the key is out of range. To preserve battery life, the Fob can be turned off by pressing the Triumph logo. I learned about this feature while stranded, by my own doing, at a gas station. I accidentally turned the Fob’s transmission off. With the Fob turned off, the bike wouldn’t turn on and only emitted a small pulsing red light at the top center of the TFT display. After a quick call to Triumph’s home office, I realized my error, turned the Fob back on, started the bike, and got on my way. SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 35

THE FIRST RIDE: SPEED TRIPLE RS 1050

36 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

My time with the RS was well spent, and I’ve come to an understanding and a new appreciation for the Speed Triple. It may have taken me almost 20 years to arrive at this moment of, and that’s just fine. If you are in the market for a naked class machine, the RS deserves serious consideration. The Triumph Speed Triple RS 1050 is a bike that is designed to handle its business but have massive amounts of fun in the process.

To watch Rossi s to watch greatness attempting to be even greater, to squeeze the sponge of perfection hoping to savor the drops of raw talent that are still at his disposal. Rossi simply outdid his competitors, more specifically Iannone. Iannone is more than motivated, trying to prove to Suzuki, that he is the better rider than his teammate Rins and he deserved to stay. Iannone threw everything at Rossi this afternoon but “The Old Man” of racing, proved he still has it as he outdid his compatriot and reserved his spot on the podium. A newly competitive Lorenzo proved that his talent is still there in abundance. He only had to prove it to the naysayers, who said he was done. Confidence is a helluva' thing. Once it is restored, it can move mountains. Which is good because that’s what it's going to take to dethrone Marquez. But the season is still young. A lot can happen and has happened with more that could happen! In short, the season is just heating up, and as one Sunday in Mugello proved, Champions are Champions for a reason. They never lose that talent, that drive, that made them who they are. Lorenzo and Rossi proved it. The question we ask now is, “Can they sustain that over the next 13 rounds!” 54 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

XDA WPGC Bike Fest which sets the Maryland International Raceway ablaze with some of the fastest racing on two wheels for two days of action on and off the track with entertainment, a custom bike show, bikini contest, charity race and new for this year a Baggers versus Slingshots sound contest. Not only did we witness some of the fastest and exciting track action in Top Fuel, Real Street, Crazy 8's, Pro ET and all other classes, the turnout also hit records. The HTP Performance Grudge class hosted by Miss Bud Light Lime witnessed 71 entries including a few supercharged Harley's from the High Performance Crew. iding a motorcycle around a track demands a combination of physical skill, mental

acuity, and bravery that I have yet to find in another sport. With this also comes the endless pursuit of progress, finding those precious seconds that separate us from the riders that we compete against. It doesn't matter if you are a track day rider or a professional racer, the spirit of competition and the desire to progress is something that I find dwells within the hearts of most riders I know. As we get more experienced, finding those seconds becomes more difficult. On most circuits in the United States, a one-second difference in lap times equates to an average speed difference of only about 1mph. We often need to search in the details to break through those plateaus and get where we want to go. In this month's article, we will discuss one of the most valuable places that riders leave time on the table and detail some of the prerequisites needed to get this time back.

110 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

As a rider goes through a typical corner, the order of operations is nearly always the same. One of the keys to finding that next second (again, only about 1mph in average speed) is to seek out the little gaps in this process that we can eliminate. One of the gaps that is the most costly is the delay between turning the bars and the reapplication of the throttle. If you run through turn one at your local track in your mind, there is often a lot to do in a very short period of time. The greatest stress for most people is to make sure that they slow the bike down enough to be able to make the apex. Once a rider completes this task, there is often a momentary sigh of relief before they move on to the next mission, getting on the gas. And this is where there is much to gain.

It is that "slow" first 25% that will make you both faster and safer. You will have a direct connection to the rear tire and a feeling of control. When the throttle is snapped on too quickly, there is also often a "lag" between what happens at your right wrist and what happens at the rear tire.... and we all know what can happen next.

notable personalities and moto journalists out for a day of fun, I‌ mean work. Pirelli held a private track day for a launch of their new Diablo Rosso Corsa II tires, and the event did not disappoint. After the morning for the fog lifted and visibility cleared, the track went hot. Straddled atop a 2018 Ducati Panigale 959 for my first session, I headed out to see what the new DRCII had to offer. After a refresher lap, I turned it up a little bit and went to work. The DRCII is Pirelli’s first multi-zone compound tire, engineered to offer a greater sense of confidence as a result of improved grip, stability, and consistency. The DRCII tires feature a compound make up that consists of three zones in the rear and two zones in the front. The outer compound zone of the DRCII's is where the magic happens. 118 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM
