FROM THE EDITOR

I

have never professed to be a Wheelie King. I can throw a nice one back but I have never claimed to have “blocks”, as the kids say today. But in the ever state of learning, growth and change, I am always looking to improve every aspect of my riding… And that includes my hooligan tendencies. So in a recent conversation with my good friend Jason, I simply asked, “What’s the key to a successful wheelie? I know that I am supposed to cover the rear brake and…” Jason looked up from his Strawberry Lemonade and corrected me mid sentence. “Don’t cover the rear brake.” “What?” I replied. “Don’t cover the rear brake. Use the rear brake.” He looked at me as he waited for the light bulb to appear over my head. It took a minute before it happened, but eventually it got there. What he meant was, instead of hovering over the rear brake in the event of tip back… apply the rear brake and control how far up the front wheel leaves the ground.

14 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

A few days later, I put the theory to use and found that it made a huge difference, not just in the manner of the wheelie but also in my confidence of the wheelie. I have always found it so interesting how often, the smallest, seemingly insignificant notion, thought or idea has such a profound impact on matters. If you’ve done a track day and have worked with a coach, you’ll remember how many times they offer small tidbits of advice or suggestions to improve your riding. It is all pieces of the puzzle. All part of the larger picture. That’s what being a rider is about, constant improvement, learning and application of what you’ve learned. It’s not about what you ride. More so, how you ride. I’m still not claiming “blocks” but I really don’t have to. If I’m ever asked for a wheelie, I’ll respectfully decline and respond, “I’ve people for that.” Best, Allan allan@sportbikesincmag.com

INDUSTRY NEWS HONDA’S CB1100 EX FEATURES RETRO STYLING WITH MODERN TECHNOLOGY The Honda CB750, introduced in 1969, holds a special place in the hearts of many for simple nostalgic reasons, not to mention that it was toted as the world’s first superbike. In 2013, the CB1100 was released and now, Honda prepares to unleash the 2017 CB1100 EX on the world. While retaining its classic style

16 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

and edge, the CB1100 EX offers modern bells and whistles: LED front and rear lights, 41mm Showa Dual Bending Valve Forks, twin Showa rear shocks, ABS brakes and a slipper clutch. Available in Candy Red, the 2017 CB1100 EX will hit showroom floors in May 2017.

VANGUARD MOTO INC. DEBUTS THEIR ROADSTER

The newest American motorcycle company has emerged from the streets of New York City with their first offering to the industry. Vanguard Moto Inc.’s Roadster is the brainchild of Edward Jacobs. Jacobs previously lead the design team at Confederate Motorcycles before quitting to launch Vanguard with his co founder FrançoisXavier Terny. The Roadster is more minimalist than futuristic, getting down to the root connection between machine and rider. Housing a 117 cubic inch air cooled, v twin, six speed engine, the Roadster is a frameless, single sided rear swing arm, shaft driven bike equipped with Brembo brakes and Ohlins 48mm front forks and a mono shock in the rear.

The Roadster’s simple appearance does not mean that it doesn't have a commanding presence. Quite the opposite. It’s raw, structural presentation has a magnetic and drawing power. To use the phrase “curb appeal” is understating the potential impact that Vanguard’s Roadster could have on the industry. It’s not just the bike that could shake things up in the market, but the company’s outlook on manufacturing, as well. The bike is made in and is every bit New York, attitude and all… But the appeal for the machine could spread globally. The price tag of 30,000 says a lot. Mainly, that Vanguard wants to sell motorcycles and they want to sell a lot of them. Visit their site to learn more about the company and their Roadster by clicking HERE… SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 17

THE PRESS ROOM: INDUSTRY NEWS OVER 23,000 BIKES RECALLED BY INDIAN A faulty fuel rail that may come in contact with other parts and could result in a fuel leak. The bikes affected include select 2014 through 2017 models of the Chief Classic, Chief Dark Horse, Vintage, Cheiftan, Chieftan Dark Horse, Springfield and Roadmaster. The fix seems simple and involves the installation of a bracket that will limit the movement of the fuel rail. Owners will be notified by Indian and the dealer network will install the bracket at no charge to the owner.

SUZUKI RECALLS THE V STROM 650 The alternator stator in certain V Strom DL650 models from 2012 through 2016, may have insufficient heat resistance and could cause a short circuit, preventing the battery from properly charging. The total number of affected units is over 8,000. Suzuki is replacing the faulty stators, free of charge via the dealer network.

KAWASAKI’S 2017 H2R Kawsaki’s motto for the H2 and H2R is simply “Built beyond belief…” First introduced in 2016, the original HR2 posed the question of “Why?” Kawasaki’s response was simply because they could. And it is in that manner that they released the 2017 model of the H2R with upgraded components and a few new bells and whistles. For 2017, the suspension has been upgraded with a full adjustable Ohlins TTX concentric twin tube design rear shock with a new linkage. The instrument cluster has been upgraded to

now include a bank angle display and max bank angle recording function. A new quick shifter provides quicker shifting for smoother acceleration, as well as deceleration. The preload can now be adjusted without any tools by the rider thanks to a new remote preload adjuster. Thanks to a new compact Inertial Measurement Unit by Bosch, the H2R can provide for comprehensive feedback and precision. Plenty of kit wrapped around a 998cc four cylinder, supercharged engine with a price tag of $55,000.00.

The Second Annual B.T. MotoGP Awards

SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 27

THE GRID: MOTOGP WITH B.T.

T

he 2016 MotoGP season is in the books and oh boy, what a season it was! Arguably the greatest season on record with nine different winners. How do you celebrate such a season? With the second annual B.T. MotoGP Awards of course. These awards are tounge in cheek but are also meant to honor these brave riders for all they do and how much we appreciate them. So without further ado, here are the BT MotoGP Awards...

BEST RACE CAMEO BY A NON GP REGULAR: Nicky Hayden. Great to see Hayden fill in for Dani Pedrosa at Phillip Island. Kind of like the Circle of Life without Mustafa singing about it.

28 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

BEST SPRINT BACK TO THE BIKE AFTER A CRASH: Cal Crutchlow. Don't believe me? Watch Cal in Argentinia and Austin. Rumors that Usain Bolt turned down a chance to race Cal with a full race suit on were unfounded.

BEST DEFLECTION OF A REPORTER'S QUESTION: Valentino Rossi and Marc Marquez at the Sepang Presser about their relationship now! Superman couldn't deflect bullets the way these two deflected these questions.

SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 29

THE GRID: MOTOGP WITH B.T.

GUTSIEST PERFORMANCE: This award will be split between Bradley Smith and Andrea Iannone. Iannone with a injured vertabrae and Bradley Smith with a knee so bad that he was waking up every two hours to rehab it. These two embodied the GP spirit by gutting it out and racing when the rest of us would be drugged up like a 70's Rock Star on a couch!

RACE OF THE SEASON: Every race had its specialness but... Mugello was the one that stood out. Rossi blowing up an engine in his home race and Lorenzo nipping Marquez at the finish line on a beautiful summer afternoon in the Italian countryside?

30 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

COOLEST LIVERY: Cal Crutclow's Castrol green and white Livery. All I can is "Fookin' Sweet!"

COOLEST LOOKIN' RIDER AND BIKE: Pol Esparago . All I can say about him is... Look at him in his lime green, black and yellow scheme and all you can is, "Handsome Bastard!" Nobody rocks lime green like Pol. Not even a leprechaun!

SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 31

THE GRID: MOTOGP WITH B.T.

BEST COMEBACK IN A RACE: Gonna say it right now, only because I was there. Marc Marquez at the German GP. During a flag to flag race, Marquez goes off track, basically flat tracks it back on course into 9th place, gambles on full slicks with his second bike and takes the win! True Marquez style victory!

I'LL SHOW YOU: This award goes to  the rider who's team essentially dropped him for another rider. This one was easy... Andrea Iannone. He became the first Ducati rider to win a race since Casey Stoner. Granted he ran over and outran his teammate to get this award but he deserves it by never giving up and keeping a positive attitude and never bad mouthing his team... All with a bad back. 32 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

BREAKOUT PERFORMANCE: This one was tough, but I had to go with consistency and that goes to Maverick Vinales with his win at the British GP. You knew it was coming and this race was his coming out party. I have to admit, a very second was Cal Crutchlow with two victories but his inconsistency earlier in the year was what cost him.

BEST SAVE: Mark Marquez... Pick one! My personal favorite? Brno. Has to be seen to be believed. Wow!

SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 33

THE GRID: MOTOGP WITH B.T.

MASTER OF HIS DOMAIN PERFORMANCE: This goes to the rider who was able to keep it together and win the championship under dire circumstances. This goes to Marc Marquez. Everyone knows he's like a bull in a China shop on Redbull. That's why you love him or really love him! He is the straw that stirs the MotoGP drink. The rider you see on a pit board and you say to yourself "Oh God, no!" He realized last year that sometimes to win a championship, you just have to let it go and get the points. Not exciting for the fans but... it's Marquez. Somehow he still finds a way to make it exciting. He truly mastered the domain between his ears and captured his fifth World Championship!

JOURNALIST OF THE YEAR: I'm all shits and giggles, but if you want to know the juicy technical details... David Emmett. Hands down! There are not enough superlatives to describe this talented writer.

34 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

THE MAN: This is an award that reads more like a Lifetime Achievement Award. And maybe it is, but it goes to Valentino Rossi. It's not the fact that Rossi is still racing, it's the fact that he's still relevant and was in the championship run until the final three weeks. All at an age where mere mortals are taking it easy, much less going 200 plus miles an hour on a motorcycle. Rossi is synonymous with MotoGP and vice versa. Whereas Marquez is the straw that stirs the drink, Rossi is the drink! Instead of resting on his laurels, Rossi continues to want to get better. He built a flat track on his property, "The Ranch", and invites other riders to race with him. He's started an academy for younger Italian riders. And above all, he still has a passion for the motorcycle! For all these reasons, it should be no doubt, who "The Man" is.

So there it is, the B.T. MotoGP Awards. I hope you got a chuckle and I hope everyone enjoyed reading my reviews through the season. It was truly a pleasure writing for you and I can't wait for the 2017 season! Thank you! Look for me in March for the 2017 MotoGP Season Opener!

Comfort explained. Our technique combines a specifically formulated viscoelastic polymer also known as SaddleGEL with the latest in co-molding comfort technology to reduce engine vibration transmitted to your body by up to 50%, and reduce direct impact forces by up to 92%.

Shock and Vibration are the real world forces acting on

your body that cause rider discomfort and fatigue. Take a moment and think about your last

ride and ask yourself – Are rough roads and constant vibration cheating me out of the ride I deserve? If the answer is yes, you owe it to yourself to read on and learn more about what GELcore Technology can do for you. Newton’s third law of motion states that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Understanding the forces acting on your body while riding is critical to understanding why homogenous polyurethane foam seats developed in the late 1940’s and probably on your motorcycle right now are preventing the extended ride times you desire. Saddlemen uses science to change everything by offering a complete line of seats featuring our unique manufacturing process known as GELcore Technology. GELcore is engineered to dampen, divert, and deflect energy through a mechanical process resulting in a smooth, therapeutic ride.

44 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

Saddlemen invented GELcore Technology and today we are widely recognized as the industry leader, selling more gel seats than any other seat manufacture. However when it comes to the benefits of gel don’t take our word for it. NASA uses gel to protect sensitive camera equipment on the Space Shuttle Discovery as it pierces the Earth’s atmosphere at 17,000 mph. NASA also uses gel to keep the International Space Station in orbit, gel is currently used in the medical industry for Wheelchairs and Hospital beds to proWheel mote blood flow, and major league baseball mitt manufactures utilize this cutting edge material to dampen the impact of a 100mph fast ball. Instead of relying on foam cushions or air bladders that may impose improper contours, a riding saddle with GELcore Technology provides a topographically neutral suspension that will conform to the shape of the person who sits in it. Using pres sure-mapping technology, we experimented with different tensions across the backrests and seats, fine-tuning our designs to produce the desirable distribution patterns: peak pressure zones under the ischia, with wide distribution of lower values along the thighs and across the back, avoiding the spine and the area behind the knees.

GP-V1 PERFORMANCE SPORTBIKE SEAT

THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING

Whether you’re crossing town or traversing continents, it’s the ultimate performance upgrade. With just the turn of a screw, you get a hi-tech seat that fits you, your motorcycle and your style – taking your ride to the next level. *Now available for most sportbikes.

very year, racers and fans from all over come to Bradenton Motorsports Park for the Super Fest Grudge Finale hosted by the Kings of Grudge. This years event featured a Custom Bagger show, roughly 500 motorcycles and over 2,500 spectators with the main event being The Big 8 Championship Title. Thirteen of the fastest nitrous and turbo grudge bikes traveled and entered the event coming from as far as Texas and Ohio with the hopes of being named The Big 8 Royal Rumble Champ and taking home an undisclosed pot of money at the end of the night. This year, the event featured some of the world's fastest grudge bikes and bike builders from all over the country: HTP Performance, EastSide Performance, Rossi Performance and ProAction Cycles, Acme Racing, Xtreme Motorsports, Williford Racing, plus more. This year, Rodney Williford of Williford Racing built a Turbo Hayabusa specifically for the Big 8 which has never disclosed his time in any type of racing event. This month we decided to go one on one with Rasheem Clark, co owner of the Kings of Grudge Motorcycle Series Tour and creator of the BIG 8 Royal Rumble. We wanted the world's fastest heads up grudge racing, run what ya' brung. SBI: This was our second year with your series in Bradenton, FL and each year it has gotten larger and larger. How did you come up with the season finale event known as SuperFest? RC: We wanted Superfest to be the year end grand finale, the Super Bowl of grudge bike racing so we got with the owner of Bradenton Motorsports in Florida and he welcomed KOG with open arms. Awesome facility and perfect weather in December. I can't forget to mention the big payouts! SBI: I’m a fan of seeing anything that’s good for motorcycle racing. The Big 8 Royal Rumble Championship, for all of the marbles featured Jeremy Rossi versus Rodney Williford. From a personal stand point, explain what this matchup means for everyone that may not understand the Turbo versus Nitrous conversation and how good this was for racing. RC: It was a grudge match for the ages. Big Turbo versus Big Nitrous. Both bikes were fast 52 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

all weekend, so folks seem to think that turbo grudge bikes have the advantage because of all the power they can make. But the BIG 8 is 1/8 mile racing. There is no room for mistakes. It's anybodys race. You must be consistent and fast on every pass! Black Plague and Rossi Performance showed everyone again what that means. They became back to back BIG 8 Champions taking home the title at SuperFest Bradenton 2K16!

T

he deafening roar of a 2016 Harley Davidson 1250cc Roadster bellows thunderously through downtown Kuala Lumpur Malaysia, only to be drowned out by the glass shattering cheers of 30,000 plus fans lining the streets, hoping to get a glimpse of the one and only female Harley Davidson freestyle stunt rider in the world. Christina Billings, a stunt rider from Massachusetts, who has been riding freestyle for just over five years, is very excited for her first show overseas. Not only is it her first show overseas, it is also her first time ever leaving the United States. What a way to kick off her international debut! “It seems surreal being here after I was told I was going to hate the food and get sick,” Said Christina. “It turned out to be quite the opposite, I like it here so much I don’t want to leave. Idi Mudh, owner of Red Garage, is the mastermind behind Christina headlining the show. His thought was to bring something different this year for the show, and he

more than achieved his goal. He found a unicorn in the very small world of freestyle stunt riding. It is very hard to find something or someone unique in the stunt world, but Christina has established herself as such. “Nothing like this has ever been done in Malaysia, or in Asia as a matter of fact.” Said Idi. “When I saw the first video of Christina riding a wheelie on a Harley, it all came together.” Truly, nothing like this has ever been done in Asia. The

majority of the Harley riders here had no clue about all the tricks that can be done on a Harley. Most of the time, race replica street bikes are used for stunt shows. Seeing a Harley perform the same tricks left many in awe. “KL Bike Week is not the biggest in Asia, but being the first to host a show like this puts it amongst the top contenders,” said Nadia, a fan Christina taught how to burnout. Four performances were

scheduled for December 17, but as it is with anything, the schedule was bound to change. There was a lot of setup and adjustments needed to the bike, not just to perform but also for the rider’s comfort. The tricks are nerve racking as it is, but as the rider’s level of comfort increases so does the willingness to push the limits. “There is a lot more involved in these stunt bikes than I could have ever imagined,” said Bud, the mechanic who built Christina’s bike. “We are prepared for next year now

that we have a better grasp on what to expect. There are modifications needed on the motorcycle to allow it to handle the stresses of stunt riding. The antilock brake was removed, clutches changed, bigger rotor and brake calipers added.” The modifications were also necessary to allow the motorcycle to handle the stresses of stunt riding. It did not take long for that stress to cause a failure. Three clutch plates, the nemesis of the Harley stunt rider, were burned until the correct combination of clutch plates and springs were discovered, finally allowing Christina to ride the bike with confidence. “I just wanted to ride and put on a good show for everyone,” said Christina. Put on a show is exactly what she did. Between the noise of the Roadster and that of the crowd one was hard pressed to hear anything else. Just when you thought it could not get any louder you were quickly proven wrong. The noise that erupted from the crowd when Christina did her first wheelie on the bike was indescribable. It was the first time the crowd had seen a wheelie live on a Harley, and it was by a female. “We were so excited to see SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 65

her do the wheelies for the crowd,” said Won. “It is all everyone was looking forward to the entire weekend.” Weather also impacted the performances, causing them to cancel the first two. Never wanting to let the fans down, Christina put on a smoke show for them in the rain. The limited 66 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

grip from the wet conditions made it very easy to get the rear tire spinning. She ignited the street in downtown Kuala Lumpur like it had never seen before. Once the smoke cleared and another one of her hour-long selfie and autograph sessions ended, Christina took a moment to let it all sink in.

“I took a lot or pictures with fans this week but seeing how many of those fans are using the pictures as their profile pictures puts it all into perspective,” said Christina. “I am both humble and grateful…I cannot wait to see everyone in 2017!”

IMPROVE YOUR SKILLS

IMPROVE YOUR SKILLS: BREAKING THE CHAIN CODE WORDS: ERIC WOOD IMAGES: MICHAEL SPAIN SMITH

94 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

S

portBikes Inc editor Allan Lane is always looking out for the best interests of his readers. This month, Allan asked me to discuss the pros and cons of chain and sprocket upgrades. Since this is such a commonly purchased part, we will look at the major considerations for changing out these parts for both the street and the track so that you can make an informed decision. Before we delve into the benefits and downfalls of aftermarket drivetrains, I thought it would be good to cover the basic nomenclature that manufacturers use when describing these parts. For example, what’s the difference between a 630-114 and a 520-120 chain? Once you understand the basics, deciphering the code for chain sizing is simple.

SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 95

IMPROVE YOUR SKILLS: THE CHAIN CODE BREAKING THE CHAIN CODE Motorcycle chain sizes are generally called out in inches, and the three-digit number used to describe the chain size is based on the “rule of eights”. After the three-digit prefix, the suffix (114 or 120 from above) simply represent the number of links in the chain. Here are the basics for breaking down the thre digit primary code for chains.

• First Number – chain pitch. Take this number and divide by eight. o Examples: 420 or 428 chain pitch is 4/8” (1/2”). 520, 525, 530 or 532 is 5/8” and 630 is 6/8” (3/4”) • Second and Third Numbers – roller width (sprocket thickness). Place a decimal between the last two numbers and divide by eight (with a couple exceptions) o Examples: 420 or 520 roller width is 2.0/8” (1/4”). 525 is 2.5/8” (5/16) and 530 or 630 is 3.0/8” (3/8”). o Other Factors – there are a few “odd” sizes like 428 and 532 that have the same pitch and roller width as a theoretical 425 or 530 chain would, but have larger roller diameters for extra strength. A 428 chain has a 2.5/8 width and a larger roller diameter. *strength represents the claimed tensile strength for best chain offered by a single popular brand in each size. 96 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

PROS AND CONS (MAINTAINING THE SAME GEAR RATIO) The benefits from a new set of chain and sprockets are many. Aftermarket chains can be a key component in customizing your ride as they are available in a variety of finishes and colors that help make your bike unique. Sprockets are available in both steel and color anodized aluminum varieties, as well as a few hybrid designs with aluminum hubs and steel tooth rings for riders looking for a balance of weight and wear characteristics. The weight reduction from reducing your chain size (520 is the most common size used at the racetrack) is found in the chart in the prior section. In addition, most Aluminum rear sprockets are made from a 7 series alloy, which weighs 60% less than steel. The smaller front sprocket takes such a heavy load that they are all currently made from steel since aluminum is simply not tough enough to survive. Combining a smaller chain with a thinner set of sprockets will commonly save 2 to 3 pounds of weight. Since chain and sprockets spin, weight reduction in these parts make a greater difference in the performance of your bike. Your bike not only has to move this weight forward but also spin it up, so weight here creates a double penalty. Here is a simple example that illustrates the difference between fixed and rotational weight. Since Force = Mass x Acceleration, a 1% reduction in combined bike and rider weight would roughly cause the same engine (Force) to produce about 1% more acceleration. The average bike and rider are about 600 lbs., so this theoretical 1% equals about 6lbs. As an experiment on the Dyno, we tested a couple street bikes and were shocked that when we switched from a stock tire to a heavier aftermarket tire (about 6 lbs) on a bike that was making about 100hp, we lost about 6hp (6%)! We thought something was wrong until

we put the stock tire back on and everything went back to normal. Now, the tire makes a large difference because it is such a large diameter (this makes a big difference) but in this case the difference in performance was 6X the theoretical gain in reducing 6 lbs. in weight elsewhere. In addition, bikes with lower rotating weight will feel substantially lighter when turning from side to side. There is one significant down side to reducing your chain size and going to an aluminum sprocket, and this is the life span of the components. The smaller parts concentrate the drive loads on the smaller pins, bushings and sprocket teeth. Before making this change, always refer to the chain manufacturer and be certain that the chain you are looking for is properly rated for your motorcycle. The tensile strength data on the previous chart is good for comparing the relative strength of one chain to another, but bike manufacturers do not call out minimum chain strength numbers for each model – that’s the job of the chain manufacturers. While the life of a 520 chain is going to be less than a 630 chain, I’ve had excellent luck when purchasing top quality 520 chains (low grade 520 chains wear out

extremely fast) on my race bikes over the years. Proper lubrication and adjustment is paramount to preventing early failure, and riders can figure on replacing these components at 2-3 times the frequency of a larger chain with steel sprockets. CHANGING GEAR RATIOS If you decide to change your sprockets, the next decision will be whether you want to keep the stock gear ratio. If you are a racer, choosing the right gearing is a major part of your setup and will vary greatly from track to track. See SportBikes Inc April 2015 for a detailed article on this process. For street riders, changing sprocket sizes is a give/take process that will vary greatly from rider to rider based on what you are trying to accomplish. The two basic choices are to go “taller” or “shorter”. Taller gearing is accomplished by either selecting a larger front sprocket or a smaller rear sprocket. In theory, taller gear increases top speed (if your bike has the horsepower to utilize it). If your bike will not pull to redline in top gear as it is, then taller gearing is not likely to help your bike go faster. Taller gearing will require you to slip the clutch a little more when leaving from a stop, but it will also decrease the amount that you need to shift. Your bike SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 97

IMPROVE YOUR SKILLS: THE CHAIN CODE will not accelerate as quickly in a top gear roll on, but your highway cruising RPM will be lower. Let’s say you want to estimate the change in RPM you’ll get by changing gearing. If your bike currently cruises at 5,000 RPM at 65 mph on the highway and goes from a 41 to a 40 tooth rear sprocket and changes from a 15 tooth to a 16 tooth front sprocket, your new cruising RPM will be as follows: (Old RPM) x (new gear ratio) / (old gear ratio) = New RPM In this case your old gear ratio was 41/15 (2.733) and the new gear ratio is 40/16 (2.500)

sprocket or larger rear sprocket) then the bike will launch more easily, accelerate more quickly and need to be shifted more often. Your ultimate top speed will be lower (you can use the same formula above to calculate your theoretical new top speed) and the cruising RPM on the highway will be higher. Since the RPM drop between shifts will be smaller the bike will see less of the lower portions of the horsepower curve and accelerate more quickly between each shift. This is why you typically see huge rear sprockets on stunt riding machines as the bike can pull right through the lower part of the power curve and more easily loft the front wheel in any gear.

Changing your chain and sprockets can make a big difference in your motorcycle, and I hope Your new RPM will be 5000 x 2.500 / 2.733, this article has given you a little insight into how you can affect change on your machine. Until which equals 4573 RPM (427 RPM lower) next time, ride fast, ride safe! Conversely, if you go shorter (smaller front

STAFF STUFF PUIG RACING • HI TECH FOLDABLE LEVERS Allan Lane

The stock levers on just about every motorcycle serves a purpose under mass production. Beyond that, the OEM levers are pretty bland in terms of style, color and function. To remedy this plight, there are many after market levers in production today, all varying in price, color and style. For my 2015 BMW S1000RR, I selected the Puig Hi Tech Foldable Levers in blue with the black adjuster for the clutch and brake. The Puig levers have a great look and feel to them. My hands are larger so having levers with six points of adjustment make it easier to find my comfort zone. The folding ability really is a nice feature. If there was an off at speed, the lever would fold out of the way, ideally preventing 110 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

further damage to the more expensive master cylinder assembly. The installation was simple, taking about 30 to 40 minutes, as everything needed for install comes in the boxes except for the tools. Once installed, they really do add another layer of appreciation for the bike. In the case of the S1000RR, the blue was a spot on choice to match the color way of the bike, giving it a more personalized look. Such a major difference over the stock silver levers. The Puig Hi Tech Foldable Levers are more than a great option in the sea of aftermarket bits. They are, hands down, a top notch upgrade. http://puigusa.com Rating: 6 (out of 6)
