INDUSTRY NEWS MV AGUSTA IS NOW OWNED 100% BY MV HOLDINGS MV Agusta is once again owned completely by MV Holdings after they acquired the remaining 25 shares that were previously owned by Mercedes AMG. Their ef for ts to claim 100 percent ownership began in 2016. The successful launches of new models, namely the Dragster 800 RR, positioned the company in a positive financial light that would offer the opportunity to make this move. They’ve focused on a 3 cylinder model line up over the last couple of years but had their eyes focused on a new 4 cylinder machine that make its debut in 2018.

PARTS UNLIMITED IS OFFICIALLY NOW A PART OF AIMEXPO … at least for 2018 and 2019. Parts Unlimited and the American International Motorcycle Expo have come to an agreement that has Parts Unlimited and Drag Specialities, their cruiser segment, participating in the 2018 and 2019 AIMExpo events. The AIMExpo serves two purposes over its multi-day run of show. The first half caters to the industry, only open to those in the business. The second half of the show opens up to the consumer market. THE PRESS ROOM: INDUSTRY NEWS RECALL ROUNDUP: KAWASAKI, HONDA AND DUCATI THE KAWASAKI Z125 GETS RECALLED Kawasaki has issued a recall for the 2017 and 2018 Z125 PRO and Z125 PRO KRT because the ECU may have improper settings for the fuel injection that could lead to engine stalling. The recall affects just under 10,000 units and the dealer network will replace the ECU, free of charge. FUEL LEAKS ON THE HONDA VTX1300CX A recall has been issued by Honda for about 20 VT1300CX Fury units for faulty welding in the fuel tanks. In the affected models, missing welding at the mounting brackets can result in tank separation and fuel leaks. Honda is alerting owners and the dealer network has been instructed to inspect the welding and replace the fuel tanks if necessary, at no charge to the owner. DUCATI ISSUES MULTI BIKE RECALL The Brembo front brake master cylinders on select Ducati models may be defective, resulting in possible

brake failure. The recall potentially affects 8000 bikes with production years ranging from 2015 through 2018. The affected models include: Monster 1200, Multistrada, Panigale, XDiavel S and Scrambler. The remedy seems simple enough and requires replacing the front brake master cylinder piston. Owners will be notified by Ducati. KAWASAKI RECALLS THE ZR900 Kawasaki has issued a recall for about 2,383 ZR900 models, manufactured between 2017 and 2018. The issue revolves around the rear shock absorber tie-rod frame mount holes that can be damaged if the rear shock bottoms out. Kawasaki is notifying owners and the dealer network will be instructed to inspect the tie rod mounting holes or replace the bracket to frame at no charge to the customer. 16 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

THE FIRST RIDE: DUCATI'S PANIGALE V4

DUCATI

unleashes its most capable Superbike ever in its new Panigale V4S.

Ducati paints racetracks, and the faces of its rivals red, with the introduction of its next generation and fourcylinder powered Panigale V4 (starting at $21,195). This sixth generation Italian built Superbike marks a historic departure from its L Twin roots. Embarking into a multi-cylinder destiny in the never-ending quest for power, performance, and of course exhilaration. But did it succeed? After a day spent at Spain’s fast and twisty Circuit Ricardo Tormo MotoGP circuit, it’s clear the Borgo Panigale did its homework, offering a machine that goes toe to toe with the finest sportbikes on the planet.

DOUBLE THE PLEASURE With a hard-hitting attitude and penchant for rpm, the outgoing Superquadro Twin was certainly a monster. But the all-new 1103cc Desmosedici Stradale supercharges the experience to a level we’ve never experienced on a Ducati, let alone any other production sportbike, displacement bump aside. It’s a

ELEVEN THOUSAND, TWELVE THOUSAND, THIRTEEN THOUSAND, ALL THE WAY TO NEARLY A FIFTEEN THOUSAND RPM REDLINE, THE 16-VALVE MOTOR PULLS AND PULLS AND PULLS BEFORE SOFTLY SIGNING OFF.

SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 23

THE FIRST RIDE: DUCATI'S PANIGALE V4 true metamorphosis, offering an experience that goes from mild to wild, with the simple twist of the wrist.

Smoother than ever, the 90-degree V-Four produces a pleasing and highly linear spread of torque that is, at or near its 91 lb-ft peak (crank) from 8800 to 12,000 revs. The powerband is wider making it, dare we say, easy to control. But don’t for a second assume this Panigale lost any of its macho persona.

Hard on the throttle, the more compact engine (in terms of length and height, but 1.7 inches wider) climbs through the rev range with the same lit match to gasoline explosion as we remember with the 1199/1299. Thing is though: it never stops.

Eleven thousand, twelve thousand, thirteen thousand, all the way to nearly a fifteen thousand rpm redline, the 16-valve motor pulls and pulls and pulls before softly signing off. Lights on the crisp iPhone 6-sized dash flashing (if the engine’s orgasmic screams weren’t enough); grab the next cog! In the lower gears, the Panigale V4 accelerates so powerfully, it induces epileptic-like vision blur. That is until you acclimate to its hellacious roller coaster-like speed. Now that’s a motorcycle.

NOTHING SOUNDS LIKE A DUCATI. THAT TRADITION CONTINUES WITH ENGINEERS MAGICALLY RETAINING THE CHARISMA OF A TWIN, BUT WITH A MORE SAVAGE CHARACTER THAT REMAINS UNIQUE IN THE CLASS. THIS AIN’T NO COOKIE-CUTTER V-FOUR.

An early innovator in sports electronics, first with fuel-injection (851/888) and then traction control (1098R), until recently, the Borgo Panigale factory lagged behind the finest systems from the Tuning Fork company and its northern neighbors. Not anymore.

Still boasting a manual studying number of acronyms, the four-cylinders electronics package is the real deal. You name it, this bike’s got it. We were especially pleased with the improved integration which makes it easier to feel like a pro at speed. Well done, Ducati.

They’re also more friendly to manipulate, utilizing logical menus and switchgear navigation that makes adjustments simple. Equally impressive is the near perfectly calibrated ride-by-wire throttle settings that make the also all-new, 200/60-series Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SP V3 feel like an extension of your right hand in ‘Race’ mode.

Nothing sounds like a Ducati. That tradition continues with engineers magically retaining the charisma of a Twin, but with a more savage character that remains unique in the class. This ain’t no cookie-cutter V-Four.

Much of the credit goes to the “Twin Pulse” firing

surface, our feet slipped off them more than once. Gripe aside, it’s still a pleasing bike to ride at speed.

Despite weighing 9.9 pounds more than the outgoing 1299, rolling out of pit lane reveals a significantly more agile motorcycle. Much of the credit goes to the engine’s counter-rotating crankshaft (similar to the MV Agusta F3 675/800) which spins in opposite direction to the rotation of the wheels.

This helps negate the gyroscopic effect of the forged Marchesini alloy wheels (standard on ’S’ model). It also mitigates wheelies and rear wheel lift during hard braking. But to be fair, an insane power-toweight ratio and battleship anchor like brakes easily overpower this mechanical tech (a good thing).

Already known for its cat-like agility, the V4 platform, with its underseat fuel tank and low slung exhaust, elevates handling to the next level. It’s more athletic during turn-in and quick side-to-side transitions. Yet the chassis is more stable, and more importantly, gives the sort of road feel we’ve missed since the steel-trellis days of the 1098/1198. No doubt, some of the credit goes to improved, but still a tad-soft feeling, V3 Supercorsa SP’s. Overall we’re ecstatic that Ducati’s

THE PRESS ROOM

GRID NEWS DUCATI’S 2018 MOTOGP LIVERY

Ducati has unveiled their 2018 MotoGP livery that included both confirmed riders, Jorge Lorenzo and Andrea Dovizioso, as well as the Desmosedici GP18. Most striking about the new GP18 is the hard, aggressive bodywork that resembles the likes of a Formula 1 race car when compared to the GPs of prior years. While the winglets scandal of last season plagued many manufacturers… and some race fans, Ducati’s solution was simple. They’ve incorporated the winglets into the bodywork to help control the increased horsepower that the GP18 possesses over the GP17. Andrea Dovizioso really came into his own in 2017 and finished the season in second place with a total of 6 race wins and a total of 261 championship points. Jorge Lorenzo wrapped up the 2017 season in seventh place with a t o t a l o f 1 37 championship points. 44 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

BOBBY FONG MOVES UP TO SUPERBIKE FOR 2018

After 2 years in the Bazzaz Superstock 1000 class, Bobby Fong will be moving on from his Quicksilver/Latus Motors Kawasaki ZX10R to pilot a Yamaha YZF R1 for the Hudson Motorcycles team in the MotoAmerica Motul Superbike class. Fong won 6 Superstock races, made it to the

THE PRESS ROOM: GRID NEWS CAMERON PETERSEN JOINS GENUINE BROASTER CHICKEN AMERICAN HONDA MOTOAMERICA SUPERBIKE TEAM With Jake Gagne’s recent move to World Superbike, the Broaster Chicken American Honda Team was left sans a pilot for the upcoming 2018 season. That changes with the announcement of the team’s 2018 Superbike pilot, Cameron Petersen of South Africa. Petersen will pilot the Honda CBR 1000RR SP2 machine with Scott Jensen at the helm as Crew Chief. Petersen made his debut with MotoAmerica in 2015 as a member of the Roadrace Factory Team. In 2016 Petersen piloted for Team Hammer in the Supersport Series. He had a short 2017 season, ending it early to tend to his family. But as the universe would have it, Petersen is back in the saddle. "I can't tell you how happy I am to be back,” Petersen said in a team release. “I came into MotoAmerica in 2015 hoping to achieve big things. Although I didn't set the world on fire in the first couple years, I proved to myself that on a good day I could run with the best. Coming into 2017, it looked like I had no options. But thanks to the efforts of Dave Anthony, I had the chance to ride a 1000 Superstock in selected events. Despite our best efforts, 2017 turned into a nightmare. All the while, through thick and thin, I was lucky to have the support and guidance from Danny (team owner Walker) and Mick through being involved with American Supercamp.”

JONAS FOLGER OUT FOR THE 2018 MOTOGP SEASON Jonas Folger has announced that he will not be competing in the 2018 MotoGP season. The German born, former 125cc World Champion has gracefully stepped down from his seat at Yamaha’s Tech3 MotoGP team to give himself time to recover from his illness. Folger missed the final three rounds of the 2017 season due to a genetic ailment and has been diagnosed with Gilbert's syndrome. Folger was contracted with the Tech3 team through to 2018. 46 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

It’s an amazing feeling to get such a response for simply doing what I’m truly passionate about. As a child, before I had ever ridden a motorcycle I wanted to become a stunt rider and to have come as far as I have in this game is truly a dream come true. GOALS: To travel and meet the best riders in the world that I looked up to since I discovered the sport of stunt riding. My main goal has always been to have fun and progress my skills through pushing my own personal limits. I’ve always sought after tricks that appeared to be impossible for me to accomplish and I never give up trying until I achieve them and it’s one of the greatest feelings there is in the end. DEFINE YOUR PASSION IN ONE SENTENCE: There’s a certain sense of peace when I’m riding that allows me to disconnect from all negativity in life where nothing matters but the stunts I wish to pull off. By the time the green flag was waving, the rest of the riders were long gone. I think they had hit turn two before I even moved off the starting line. The next five laps I rode completely solo. I rode my own ride and it was glorious! My goal was to just cross the finish line so I could get my race license. With about a lap or two to go, I noticed a rider sitting close to the Armco. I was doing my best to hold back my tears because I knew I was no longer in last place! With less than one lap remaining, I could sense the SuperBikes coming up behind me. Excitingly, we all crossed the finish line together making it look like I finished in the top 10! When I think back to that day, it makes me laugh. Riders who either turn the bars through this section of the turn or who use their inside arm to support their body weight not only consume front traction and feel, but they put a considerable load on the rear tire, as

it sucks on a hot day but better safe than sorry. These helmets fit very snug and comfortable. The padding on the inside makes it comfortable. There were very minimal scratches to the helmet as I landed on my hip and used my arms to break the fall. I was surprised that even when the side of my face slightly hit the concrete, nothing slid off the helmet, not even the visor. Although these helmets are a tad up there in price, it is worth the investment! I’d rather look odd with most of my makeup wiped off than my skin scraped off or a few broken bones.

Before I got up, I did check my hands to see if I was ok. My usually stylish Harley Davidson gloves were slightly scratched so since then, I upgraded to a pair of Rev'It! 2 Striker women’s gloves. These are comfortable, very flexible and have great protection on the fingers and knuckles. The wrist is lined pretty well, too. These are great for any weather! For my colder, longer rides, I got a cool pair of Mobile Warming TX gloves that are pretty snug and definitely keep my paws warm during colder riding weather. The only odd part is that the battery pack is on the top of the hand so it may feel a tad weird at first. Once they’re charged, you’ll get a good 3 to 4 hours of warmth. These saved my life when I went riding up to Monterrey a couple of years ago during one of the coldest winters in the history of California.

As far as my legs and feet went, this certainly was a wakeup call to get something more sturdy. I know that us ladies SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 109

FRICTION ZONE: GET GEARED UP! like to be stylish and all, but there are some safe, stylish and comfortable shoes for us. At the time of the accident, I was wearing a pair of simple black leather women’s River Road harness boots. Nothing too extravagant, just something perfect for cruising. They were unharmed. For touring, I go with Alpinestars Stella 6 V2 vented boots. And yes, they really are vented and it does make the difference. While other touring boots I have owned in the past were not vented and did not feel comfortable at all, these fit the bill. I got the black and pink ones. They felt extremely sturdy yet without compromising the flexibility of my mobility while riding. I was able to walk in them comfortably too. My feet moved freely in these. There are all sorts of reinforcements and protectors on this boot. The boots did not feel constricting. Perfect for those long trips where you need to wiggle those toes now and again. I also love my Forma Hyper boots as they look like a pair of faded gray high top sneakers. But, these have both ankle and toe reinforcements and they zip close on the inside which makes it easy to get in and out of. They are very waterproof indeed and perfect for local riding. The River Road, Alpinstars and Forma boots are my top 3 choices and all are very reasonably priced.

My first riding jacket was a men’s First Manufacturing Co. Raceway Skull jacket. I then had it altered to fit me. I still wear it when I ride in the colder weather and it does have lots of armor protection and a skull that glows in the dark at night so the night time drivers can actually see 110 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM
