FROM THE EDITOR
A
few weeks back, I had the opportunity to take my son for his first ride on my motorcycle. Granted it was a slow ride up the street and I never took it out of first gear but do you want to talk about a proud Daddy moment? It was one of the many bonding moments between he and I but there was something different about this one. I was sharing with him not just my passion
or obsession... This was just something altogether different. My son has been around bikes since day one. He’s been either helping me wrench on mine, at races or bike events with me... He’s even wakened me early on Sunday morning to remind me that MotoGP was about to air. And when he watches the races, I mean... He is watching the races. He’s engaged. He knows the teams, the manufacturers and the most notable riders. He knows the difference between a high side, a low side and when there is a mechanical issue. He’s only on the back end of four years old! Of his little buddies at day school, I’m the only parent that’s a daily motorcyclist. I’ve shown up for events, parades, sing a longs, cookouts, etc on my bike so his little buddies know that his Dad is always in black, wears leather and rides cool motorcycles. I think it makes him proud in a way. Again, he’s only four but when I catch his eye he has this look of, “That’s right... He’s with me. He’s my dad and he’s cooler than yours.” Honestly, I’ve never been concerned about being the cool Dad. I focus on being a good Dad. If that makes me cool my son, then I’m cool with that. Best, Allan allan@sportbikesincmag.com

NATIONAL MOTORCYCLE RALLY CURFEWS 11 states have agreed to a motorcycle curfew between the hours of 11pm and 6am at select rallies across the U.S. The intended curfew is a result of a report from the Department of Transportation that claims that over 7300 motorcycle accident fatalities occurred in 2015 during the hours of 10.30pm and 4.45am. That number is claimed to be an increase of almost 20 percent from the 2014 report. There is a proposed four level offense system that begins with a $100 penalty and goes up to $1000 fine, vehicle impound and 182 day motorcycle license suspension.
States that have already agreed to implement the curfew are as follows: South Dakota, Florida, Washington, Arkansas, California, New Hampshire, Indiana, Nevada, South Carolina, Utah and Kentucky. Affected major rallies include: Sturgis, Daytona Bike Week, Bikes Blues and BBQ, Love Ride, Laconia Motorcycle Week, Indiana Boogie, Laughlin Run, Myrtle Beach Bike Week and the Redwood Run. All the states that are implementing the curfew will begin enforcing the ordinance by July 3, 2016.

othing brings promise of a new beginning than the off season and the Spring. Those two things go together like Hollywood and plastic surgery. This MotoGP season promises to be even better than any year previous. Even better than last year? Even better than last year! Why the excitement, you say? What is it about this year that promises to be the best ever?! For starters, no more C.R.T. or Claiming Rules Teams Class. In other words, no more race within a race. It’s all one big race! The way it should be. For those unaware, in the previous seasons there were two separate classes within a race. For lack of a better term, it was like running the Olympics and he Special Olympics in the same race. Secondly there is a new tyre manufacturer. Michelin steps up to the plate like a big boy hoping to generate some added excitement to an already exciting sport. And oh boy... Have they! It’s hard to say how long it’s going to take for riders to figure out their new “Shoes” but if Loris Baz’s crash at 180MPH on the front straightaway in Sepang is any indication, this promises to be a more than interesting year. Last and certainly not least, everyone will be running the same electronics. This sounds good on paper and certainly will make the first half of the season more intriguing than Kanye West Speaking at a Donald Trump fundraiser, but I sincerely believe that after a handful of races the usual suspects will begin to emerge. They’re called “Factory Teams” for a reason. And did I mention that rider contracts are up this season?! So basically every rider is fighting for a job. Yes, the Silly Season has started! You could essentially call this MotoGP Season “The SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 31

THE GRID: MOTOGP WITH B.T. Hunger Games!” With that behind us let’s get to predictions. In MotoGP, look for “Monster Years” from Andreas Iannone and Scott Redding. Iannone has found a place at the big boy table and will be stealing food that was once reserved for a select group of riders. Redding is with Ducati, a manufacturer he should’ve been with last year and Ducati has a lineup that is just as good as any team on the grid. How good of a lineup? They have a two time World Champion Casey Stoner, as a test rider! That’s like having Steph Curry on your “Scout Team!” That being said, I have the top four being separated by a mere ten points once Valencia
rolls around with Rossi, Marquez and Lorenzo fighting for the Crown. It is for this reason and because he had a stellar last “test” I have Jorge Lorenzo emerging as your 2016 MotoGP Champion. In Moto2, I have Alex Rins edging out Sam Lowes and defending Champion Johan Zarco for the top spot. In Moto3, it is wide open like a Denny’s in the daytime. But I have Romano Fenati claiming the top spot from at least and no less than six riders. So there it is, your 2016 MotoGP predictions for “The Hunger Games on Two Wheels.” The best season ever? It remains to be seen but I’m saying yes!

N
icky Hayden was proclaimed a MotoGP Legend in the Fall of 2015 just before the final round of the 2015 MotoGP season in Valencia, Spain. This final round for the 2015 season was the final round of Hayden’s MotoGP career that began in 2003. In 2006, he won the championship and added on to his many accolades that he’s collected along the way, including both an AMA Superbike and a 600 Supersport championship. Towards the end of the 2015 MotoGP when it became clear that Hayden would be continuing with the Drive M7 Aspar Team, the talk... or speculation of what his next moves would be began to circulate. It was shortly thereafter revealed that Hayden would be making the move to World Superbike, joining the Honda World Superbike team. His fans were delighted with the news. even his critics, not that he has many, thought that this was a logical and sensible move. 40 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

Ever the hard worker and someone that believes that you get out whatever you put in... Testing for the 2016 WSBK season began immediately for Hayden, just after the close of the final round of the 2016 GP series. Lap times were impressive. But more impressive than his lap times, was Hayden’s attitude. World Superbike was going to be a challenge for him. He knew that and he embraced it. AL: What does this first season in WSBK mean to you? NH: It means I get to keep playing the game that I love! its a good opportunity for me to learn all the tracks of SBK and really get prepared for next year. AL: What are some of the challenges that you are facing transitioning to WSBK? Do you feel that coming from GP has any advantages or hinderances? NH: For sure, my days in GP have some advantages and the experiences I’ve learned should help me at times. But for sure there is a lot to learn to this new championship and to adjust to. Here, there are two races in the weekend, new tracks, different tires, different competition and a different style to going fast and riding production based bikes... But I think I am up to the job and looking forward to it. AL: What is on your “Get ‘er done” list for 2016? NH: Well of course I want to be competitive and have fun. But above all, I want to get the results I believe that I am capable of. Also, it’s very important to learn as much as possible about the championship and my team to really try and make some noise in 2017. SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 43
THE GRID: NICKY HAYDEN VS. WSBK
AL: Round one, Phillip Island. You were in the front of the pack so the pace doesn’t seem to be an issue... Will we see you on the podium often this season? NH: At Phillip Island, I had some things in my favor. It was a track that I knew from GP and a two day test leading up to the race. I am looking forward to the race in Thailand to really understand what I am up against when it will all be new and just one day of practice then the race to see what my real potential is. But to answer the question... Yes. I hope this season will see me knocking out podiums for me and all my fans! Hayden, throughout his career has always been able to capture the heart of his fans. Never complaining when things don’t go right nor passing the buck, Hayden takes the weight on his shoulders. At the same time, Hayden is the consummate team player, spreading the credit to his entire team when things go well. As he attacks this new challenge of WSBK, it will be that attitude that helps him persevere whatever humps and hurdles that may be set before him. A champion is a champion regardless of the platform. Nicky Hayden versus World Superbike... advantage, Hayden. 44 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

MOTOAMERICA: YEAR 2
WORDS: ALLAN LANE IMAGES: BRIAN J. NELSON

T
he MotoAmerica series made it’s debut last April in Austin, Texas. The organization was regarded as North American professional racing’s personal savior by many and of course had it’s skeptics. What followed that first race at the Circuit of Americas was progressive series of quality racing, lead by the collective known as the Krave Group. While year one had it’s own share of growing pains, the MotoAmerica series showed more than potential, it held promise. As we prepare for the opening round of year two, we spoke with Krave Group partner, Chuck Aksland on what we can expect from the 2016 season. SBI: What did MotoAmerica learn from year one and how does it intend to implement those lessons into the 2016 season? CA: Well, really the biggest goal we had for the first year was to try and stabilize the rules and to show the world that we can operate and run races. Although Wayne (Rainey) and myself, you know, we’ve been in motorcycles for a long time. I had some experience
coming from COTA but this was still new for us and we took it over in a very short amount of time from September to when we had our first race in April. So there were a lot of things we needed to put into place. We wanted to make sure the race was run correctly and our officials were doing their job. We had some hiccups trying to incorporate registration and our timing system together. We more, or less, rectified that half way through the season and refined it since. What the fans will see is better for this coming season. The other thing was that we didn’t really have a strong effort in reaching out and promoting the fans activities and working with the track operators as much as we could of. ur entry list was up over 20 percent from last year for the participation of who will be running all season long.” focus was to get stabilized and run the races right. So this year we have some races that we promote ourselves some races we have with revenue shares with promoters. In all these markets we are doing a lot more promotion within the motorcycle community. Isan (Hung) is visiting dealerships trying to get them in tune with the scheduled races that are coming, getting posters and other point of sales material up in their stores, etc. We have a much more focused and concentrated effort in helping promote these races and building interest into making it more than motorcycle race. So hopefully the fans will realize that there is something for everybody in these events, whether you are a café racer wanting to come out and enjoy or a motorcycle family that wants to come out and have a nice day and enjoy the fan activity along with the racing. That’s been a big focus for us so far this year.
CA: Well, there’s still a lot of work to do. The industry, was hit hard by recession. A transition happened over a few years. We are still building from that. We feel we have a lot of enthusiasm, a lot support from the community and that inspires all of us. There’s a reason why we are doing this. People like it. People want road racing. It’s a lot of work but I think Wayne and I, and our partners Richie and Jerry, see a target out there and hope we can take it there. We are going to keep striving to get there. SBI: What can the competitors look forward to this season? CA: Well we have revised the entry system from how it was done in the previous years, so we try and get as many competitors to sign up this season as possible in all of our classes. Our entry list was up over 20 percent from last year for the participation of who will be running all season long. We think that is great!
SBI: What your team undertook was very heavy and far from an easy task. So SBI: Nine rounds of racing. Two stops many are looking forward to see what at New Jersey. Is there something that you guys have coming down the line. 56 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM
you guys find special about New Jersey Motorsports Park that warranted two stops? CA: One is the enthusiasm of the fans that do attend. Two is the enthusiasm of the New Jersey Motorsport Park staff on their own merit. They really enjoy motorcycle racing, We both think there’s a huge opportunity in that market and you add in Philadelphia, New York and the surrounding areas. I think that could become the busiest draws of the calendar, certainly in the future. You know, we wanted to hold the calendar to nine events and again that’s an economic thing for the teams having to
travel across the country. We did have one or two options floating around but it didn’t really sit well. One was a construction project and it wasn’t going to be ready in time. So we just thought, to insure that we had a calendar out for the end of the year and we ran the race tracks that we know could be made as safe as possible and that we could race in all conditions and enthusiasm... NJMP had it! It was kind of a no brainer from the onset. They were like, “If you want to have two races, we would love the opportunity!” SBI: The buzz has been strong regarding SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 57
THE GRID: MOTOAMERICA YEAR 2
a broadcast television deal. Is that something that you feel confident that will happen or would you rather not speak on it? CA: Our goal was to have our races on live television and we are working to get that done. So we are confident that will happen. SBI: Do you see any scenario in the future where MotoAmerica will have a hand in or be involved with the Daytona 58 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM
200? CA: Never say never about anything. The Daytona 200 is a very prestigious event for motorcycle racing. If we could make the conditions work for everybody and bring superbike racing back, it would be great. The 2016 MotoAmerica season kicks off April 8 at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin Texas.

hile making the trip to Daytona Bike Week this year, I thought back to all the crazy memorable times we've had over the last 25 years and I really started to notice how much things have changed. So have the reasons I continue to make the trip to the world’s most popular destination for kicking off the riding season every year. I have extremely vivid memories of my parents going to Daytona every year and the many stories about the good times while there.
When I was old enough I started attending Bike Week and immediately enjoyed the week long festivities, but mainly because of all the street racing and money to be made racing every night. But as the years went by, Daytona for me, went from traveling 1000 miles in an effort to try and make some money, to traveling to Daytona while making guaranteed money from sponsors and sponsor commitments while trying to network with new marketing partners.
SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 75
THE STRAIGHT LINE: LINES OF A LEGEND
I went from hanging out for a week with friends to my whole week being booked and planned out with radio show interviews, newspaper interviews, photo shoots, bike introductions, elementary school visits, hosting events and hosting TV shows for Speed Channel, while hanging out with people like Michael
Jordan, autographs sessions with the Playboy Millenium Twins, Nicky Hayden, Kevin Shwantz, Scott Russell, the Bostrom Brothers, etc. Yes. Things had changed a lot over the last two decades. Racing has shifted from the streets to the circle track. But one thing that has stayed consistent and never changed was the amount of people that show up every year. It is quite overwhelming. This year I decide to host my first ever bike night during Bike Week with door prizes and giveaways from long time sponsors Kawasaki and Brock's Performance. Bike night went off without a hitch and helped me to realize how loyal my fans are and how much they enjoy breaking bread with the old guy. Eighteen years later our days are still full of sponsorship commitments and meetings at the Speedway and networking with corporate decision makers. During the evenings, it was extremely packed with people on 2nd Avenue just like it always has been. This is where all the metric bike owners hang out and park their R.V. and trailers for the week while vendors

setup with every kind of food you could ever imagine. While hanging out on Mary McLeod Bethune Street, formerly known as 2nd Avenue, I ran into two former team owners from N.Y. and North Carolina that I haven't seen in almost fifteen years. We used to race each other every year in Daytona for big bucks. But that was then and to see them here now helped me to relive and realize just how much things have changed. At the same time we refreshed each other with great memories of when we were all badasses. At one time, me and my posse used to run the streets. But now riding our bikes on the coast lines with my business manager and wife attending sponsor meetings and observations is all that interest me nowadays. Boy, have things really changed!

ast summer I had the opportunity to travel and ride with Jesse Toler on the beautiful paradise and island of Trinidad and Tobago. After hanging out with some of the locals like Bin Ali, Yaseen Sidat and Quincy Yen Martin, from "Bin Stuntin Productions" and working with "Bad Granny Motorsports", I thought I'd catch up with Bin to see what they've been up to. Living and riding on literally an island, certainly makes things challenging and very unique all at once. But these guys still do it purely for the love of riding.
DS: What was your first bike? How did you get into stunt riding? BA: I've been riding motorcycles since I was a teenager. I started off on dirt bikes. When I was sixteen, I got my first street bike which was an old Honda VT250. It was a piece of junk and didn't last too long. Fast forward to 2005, I got a brand new CBR1000RR. As most motorcycle riders, I always had a passion to simply pop a basic wheelie. I started off doing power wheelies that lasted less than fifty feet on the highways. I then continued watching YouTube videos to then start using the clutch to pop it and mastering the rear brake. After a couple months of this I was able to master staggered stand up wheelies for miles. I used to look at old DVDs like "Servin It Up" and other stuff from Kyle Woods and Pure Bred Riders, etc. DS: How and when did you transition into stunt riding? How did you meet the riding friends you have now? BA: Jason Britton was here in Trinidad in 2009 and after seeing him perform up close SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 83
THE REV LIMITER: THE MAIN POINTS and being able to chat with him, I decided to get into stunt riding fully and that's where the journey began. Trinidad was not exactly the easiest country to get parts in. Back in 2010 I had no clue or idea on how to obtain stunt parts. I asked a fellow Trinidadian by the name of Ray who lives in New York. He was also big in the N.Y. stunt scene and knew a lot of people. He gave me the best advice. I would wire money to him and he would get the parts for us from companies such as Sick Innovations, Full Throttle Incorporated, Impaktech, etc. This lasted for two years until I started traveling to different events and different
84 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM
states thereby meeting all the big names in the sport like Josh Miller, owner and creator of Righteous Stunt Metal (RSC). On my trip to California, I met Jason Britton of No Limit and Son Tran of Impaktech. We still get all our parts from them. DS: What was your first stunt bike? BA: My first stunt bike was a 2007 Kawasaki ZX6R. DS: What is the sport bike riding and stunt scene like there on the island? Do you have many spots to practice at?

86 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM
BA: The friends I have now, Yaseen, is my cousin and he got into street bikes and eventually like myself, developed a love for stunting. We started training at a lot where I met Quincy, who is like a brother to me, and was just getting into stunt riding after all the hype of Britton being in Trinidad. We all became best friends and this is where "Bin Stuntin Promotions" began. DS: What do you all ride now and what are your favorite tricks? BA: We all have the 2009 through 2013 Kawasaki ZX6R's. Quincys favorite trick is drifting one handed and Yaseen's is tank spreader circles. There are hundreds of sports bikes riders on the island but only five to six stunt riders. Having a nice spot to practice is always a challenge for us. DS: What is your latest project right now? BA: Our latest project is teaming up with Bad Granny Motorsports and forming a whole new movement to promote motor sports and action
sports in Trinidad. DS: There’s no question you live in actual paradise. How do you deal with all the heat there? BA: The weather here is awesome year round so we don't have winter to worry about. DS: What else do you like to do for fun or should I say “liming.” BA: Other than stunt riding, my hobbies are traveling to new places with my wife, mountain biking, wakeboarding and flying quadcopters or drones for awesome aerial footage which I plan to use in stunt videos, as well. DS: What else is up for 2016? BA: We would like to have three to four events this year and maybe have a few more foreign riders join us as well. We as a team feel very honored because we were once an island where no one in the stunt world knew about us. That’s changing. SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 87

016 marked the 75th anniversary of one of the world's most recognized bike events, Daytona Bike Week. And this is by no means an exaggeration when referring to it, as such. Bikers and club colors can be seen representing London, Australia, United Emirates, Germany, Brazil, Mexico and more creating a true eclectic melting pot of two wheel love and excitement. There are those that come to Daytona Bike Week to hang out and then there are those that come to show out. Showing out their talents from paint to mechanical to fabrication for a world of onlookers and judges to view and enjoy.
This 10 day long event is like no other you will
ever experience with bike shows ranging from the Boardwalk to the Beachside with the iconic Rat's Hole Custom Bike show hosted by Indian Motorcycle of Daytona to Bruce Rossmeyer's phenomenally huge Destination Daytona as well as several smaller shows, relatively speaking, scattered throughout Daytona as Hooters, Wing Zone, Broken Spoke Saloon and the infamous Iron Horse Saloon to name a few. Oh let's not forget about the action on the Speedway with the vendors and demo rides from the major manufacturers and of course the races where our Editor in Chief, Allan Lane had the pleasure of attending. More on that later. One of the most populated and recognizable strips in Daytona is Main Street. Doesn't matter the time of day or night this is easily one of the best places to catch all the action. You can simply post up and watch the show and parade of bikes for hours on-end consisting of some of the streets most amazing creations on two

THE TRANSITION FROM THE STREET TO THE TRACK WORDS: ERIC WOOD IMAGES: ERIK VOAKE
F
or much of the country, a generous El Nino winter has given us the mildest winter in recent memory. This has given the world of motorcycling a welcome jump start and we’ve heard from lots of riders who are planning to make their way to the track this year. As motorcycle lovers, this is music to our ears as as the track offers the safest, most forgiving environment you can find to experience the true potential of both you and your motorcycle. With auto free asphalt, medical staff on hand, air fence and a nearly unlimited well of information to draw from it’s amazing to those of us who frequent the track regularly that everyone who rides does not attend these events. The “expense” of these days also pales in comparison to that of speeding tickets and the subsequent rising insurance premiums. You absolutely do not need to be a racer to enjoy the track and riders of all ages attend. The last I checked the average age was 42. For those of you who are considering the track for the first time this season, let’s dispel some of the myths about track riding, track riders and what it takes to have a great time at the track. 114 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

IMPROVE YOUR SKIILLS: THE TRANSITION
116 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM
YOUR MOTORCYCLE First and foremost, any sport or sport touring motorcycle that is in good condition is suitable for track days. I’ve seen riders have fabulous days on everything from brand new sport bikes to a stripped down 80’s Goldwing, ridden by a fast 62 year old. The preparation for the track is simply common sense for anywhere you ride. Good tires, good brakes and an oil tight machine are just as critical on main street as they are on the back straight at Road Atlanta. The few minutes spent going over your machine with a handful of wrenches will give you peace of mind and make any ride better. Track day preparation is easy! The preparation required by most organizations takes less than 30 minutes. Any organization will have a list of requirements to pass tech, and in addition to the things mentioned above a typical track
day prep consists of things like taping over your lights, unplugging a few bulbs and removing a license plate. So now what’s your excuse? I don’t want to crash my bike! I’m amazed that riders who routinely ride over the speed limit in proximity to drivers texting on their cell phones worry about falling at the track. There are no corners with sand strewn across the apex, no twelve inch potholes or stray boulders… and if there is there will be someone jumping up and down waving a flag at you! If you can stay within your limits on roads you’ve never ridden before, then you can certainly conquer twelve corners that you get to repeat at least fifty times in a single day. If you ride with the right mindset, then you’ll come to know that the risk of falling down at the track is no different from that on the road and the consequences are often far less severe.

IMPROVE YOUR SKIILLS: THE TRANSITION GETTING READY Taking liberty with the immortal words of Yogi Berra “riding is 90% mental. The other half is physical.” Approaching the track with the proper plan will make all the difference in your first experience. Deciding to prepare your bike and your mind in advance will vastly improve your day. Here are a few tips, starting with the very basics. 1. Do your homework at home. At home you’ve got your bike, toolbox, gas stations and all the other resources you need to get you and your bike ready. Find out what’s needed in advance and get it all done ahead of time. This step alone can make or break your day. 2. Show up early and attend all the meetings.

Each track has its own nuances and specific rules both on and off the track. Be sure you know what they are so that you can make the most of your day and avoid losing valuable track time while trying to learn the rules on the fly. 3. Be willing to start at the bottom. Fast on the street and fast on the track are different worlds! Beginner programs are tons of fun, in part because they are designed to help newer riders avoid uncomfortable situations and common mistakes. Take advantage of the many special benefits and extra attention that newer riders often receive. If you’re not careful, you might learn something that will make a huge positive difference in your riding.

IMPROVE YOUR SKIILLS: THE TRANSITION PREPARING TO RIDE – AM I READY FOR THE TRACK. Track days are not a place to learn how to ride a motorcycle, they are a place that motorcycle riders go to learn how to ride better. However, this does not mean that you need to be an expert! Most riders are ready after about a year of street riding. The basic prerequisites are that you can accelerate, brake, shift and turn without conscious thought. These actions should be automatic, and you should be comfortable both holding the bike wide open on a clear stretch of road and braking hard while straight up and down. That’s it. If you can do these things then you’re ready to experience the track. Here are some tips to think about before you arrive. 1. Smooth at the controls: When you start, treat
120 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM
the track like any road you’ve never ridden before. Leave yourself plenty of margin and pick up the pace slowly. How do you know if you’re going to fast? You pay attention to your inputs. If you have to give the bike anything but completely smooth and measured inputs in your first few sessions, you need to take it back a notch. Smooth riding and soft inputs are the key to having the mental space to learn. Checkpoint: if your inside elbow and inside shoulder are not loose and relaxed the entire way through a corner then you need to relax and breathe. 2. Vision: Your first job at a new track is to learn where you are going. Nothing will help you to do this better than to remember to keep your eyes moving. New riders nearly always fixate on what
is right in front of them, which not only makes it extremely difficult to have smooth lines but also increases your perception of speed. Remind yourself to constantly move your eyes from where you are to where you are going to where you want to be. Two points make a straight line, but three are needed to make a curve. Scanning back and forth from where you are to your next two reference points will calm your nerves, smooth out your lines and keep you from turning in too early. 3. Body Position and Bar Inputs: 95% of riders who come to the track can make significant strides in their riding just by making a few adjustments with their body position and bar inputs. Relatively speaking, the percentage of time on the track that riders (even top racers) spend gripping the bars
with any kind of force is very low and is almost exclusively while they are virtually straight up and down. The lesson here is that anytime your bike has lean angle you should be soft with the controls. A good place to start for new track riders is with the 10% rule. At full lean, riders should not use more than 10% throttle, brake or bar pressure. It’s easy to remember and can save you in a pinch! We sincerely hope that you take the opportunity to ride the track this season. You’ll have a fantstic time, meet some great people and learn lessons that can help save you on the street. The concepts outlined here are just the beginng, I’ve been riding the track for over 25 years and continue to learn every time I’m there. Until next time, ride fast. Ride safe!

THE ELECTRIC HORSEMAN: HOOLIGANISM WORDS: MICHAEL LAWLESS IMAGES: DAVE HOENIG

y name is Lawless, I’ve been a Hooligan since birth. Sometimes it just leaps out of me. Like when I’m rocking through the mall with my headphones on and blurt out: “I woke up in a new Bugatti!” The bewildered looks that it draws... I love how that line defines the moment when something so dope, so super fly goes down that it defies belief. My Ace Hood moment happened at Daytona International Speedway during the opening round of the 2016 AMA PRO Flat Track
season. Just walking through the pits, my friend Jeff Hogan runs over to me and says, “Hey, the guys at Roland Sands Designs need one more racer for the Super Hooligan Race! Is your collar bone healed?” Minutes later, I’m on the grid at an AMA National astride a tricked out Indian Scout race bike modified by Roland Sands. It’s night time. Bright lights and camera men everywhere. The grandstands are packed as I blip the throttle of this snarling beast. Its so surreal. I’m not a professional racer. Just

THE FRICTION ZONE: THE ELECTRIC HORSEMAN a journalist. A fan of the sport. A weekend warrior, if you will. Green lights on and clutch out then all Hell breaks loose as we charge into the first corner. How did I get here? To make time for Daytona I worked nine of the past ten days, open to close at my day job. I’m losing my soul banging out breakless twelve to fourteen hours days. Pressure is all around me and there’s not much light in my tunnel. I sneak in a few moments to write when no one is watching. No time to breath and be free. I dream of when I can write full time, ride always and race often. I know I must keep doing the next right thing if I want to reach that plateau. The dream gives me hope. I had not ridden a motorcycle since crashing in December due to winter and healing time. Knowing my day will come I keep looking at the good things in my life. My man Jeff Hogan is iconic in his battered Bates racing leathers. I bump into him at various vintage flat track races on his X Gary Fisher Triumph Bonneville racer. Jeff is a true ambassador of the sport. He’s got that aura of coolness that one would expect from someone in the music industry. Yet, he always has a moment to give advice or laugh. Jeff’s got that humble cool that others think they have. Bumping into Jeff at Daytona lead me to Roland Sands merry band of pirates. I met Sands many years ago when he was known for being one of the fastest 250 Grand Prix racers in America. Cool how he has metamorphosed into a designer and custom bike builder. He’s the real thing. I ask Sands how this “Hooligan” thing came together. Is it just a marketing tool for selling trick RSD stuff? Sands laughs, explaining that Super Hooligan grew from more humble origins. Street bike bros got together and raced on dirt for good times. They were tired of dealing with the 126 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

hassles of being on busy public roads. They took their street bikes to the dirt were they could get there kicks and be free to ride as hard as they wanted. Realizing they were onto something good they decided to bring it to the AMA Pro Flat Track series and take it public. It was just like in the old days when men raced on Sunday then rode to work on Mondays. That’s what’s cool about the Super Hooligan racing. It connects us to simpler times . It’s proven to be quite a hit with fans and new racers alike. Which brings new blood to the sport of flat track. It may even cause the AMA to form a new Hooligan class. This could lead the manufacturers to build new, cool flat track inspired bikes for the public. And the beat goes on.
What’s it like to ride the Roland Sands and Suicide Machine Indian race bike? It’s like driving a high powered American muscle car on dirt roads, flat out! Slewing sideways on the throttle and throwing big clouds of dirt in the air! The Indian has that fantastic bellowing V8 sound. All that big torque that you would expect but it revs out nicely. With a long wheelbase it’s quite stable. My goal that evening was to merely stay on board and enjoy the experience. It was quite a magical night of racing at Daytona on an Indian and being part of the Super Hooligans. A big thank you to Roland Sands, Cameron Brewer, RSD as well as Aaron and Shaun Guardado of Suicide Machine Company. You guys rock! SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 131
