THE PRESS ROOM: INDUSTRY NEWS INDIAN AND JACK DANIEL’S TEAM UP FOR A LIMITED EDITION INDIAN SCOUT BOBBER Indian Motorcycles, Klock Werks Kustom Cycles and Jack Daniel’s have collaborated to produce a limited run of 177 custom Indian Scout Bobbers… and they sold out in 10 minutes. The partnership was established to celebrate American craftsmanship, ingenuity and remind riders that “Bottles & Throttles Don’t Mix.” Jack Daniel’s is the only distillery in the world that has its own fire department, staffed entirely by volunteers. That department was the base of inspiration, particularly their gold and black fire trucks. The bike was developed as a testament to the passion and dedication to their craft, shared by the volunteers and employees at both Indian Motorcycles and Jack Daniel’s. The bike is a tribute to firefighters and EMS professionals across the globe. To celebrate the hard work, commitment, and bravery of all firefighters and EMS first responders, Indian Motorcycle and Jack Daniel’s are hosting sweepstakes only open to these service members. Participants can enter to win bike #001 at a variety of events this year, including Daytona Bike Week (March 9-18), Fire Department Instructor’s Conference (April 23-28), Sturgis Motorcycle Rally (Aug. 3-12), and Red Knights Motorcycle Club International Convention (Aug. 16-19).

THE LIFE : THE INSIDE LINE
STUART PARR is not just an architect known for Marble House in TriBeCa, or Clearhouse on Shelter Island, or for producing many concerts and films like 8 Mile, but for his motorcycle collection. Like most people, Parr has been into motorcycles since he was a child. He grew up in Sacramento, California riding his neighbor's bikes behind his parents back, which all children do at some point. When he was 21, he purchased his first motorcycle, which is surprising considering he’s been riding since he was 6. He originally wanted a 1974 Ducati 750 Supersport with a green frame, but couldn’t afford it. So he ended up purchasing a 1971 Triumph Bonneville, although he preferred Italian for its sound and looks. 100 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

IMPROVE YOUR SKILLS: A SIMPLE TEST
A
s we enter the 2018 season, I will have been teaching motorcycle track riding for 25 years. Over the course of that time I have had the good fortune to learn from dozens of fantastic teachers. These riders have taught me how to both improve my riding and instruction techniques in dozens of areas. We have covered line selection, body position, input timing, vision, suspension and chassis setup, braking techniques and much more. Part of the beauty of our sport is that since there are so many important areas to master, the potential personal improvement never ends. Despite the nearly infinite amount of material to master, there are a few “gems” that I have found along the way that riders can use to self-diagnose their riding. This month’s article will focus on a simple check that can help fix a widespread problem that affects riders at nearly every level. If a rider is on the proper line and gives the major inputs (brakes, turning, throttle) at the correct time, the most common issue that limits both traction and confidence is improper bar input. The further that the motorcycle is leaned over, the more critical it is to be able to relax your arms. The point of greatest lean angle occurs at the slowest point of the corner, which is always in that space between where the braking ends and the throttle application begins. At this moment, the tires must have ALL of their grip available for turning. This means that ANY force in the handlebars at this point that is more than the “thumb and forefinger” guidance needed to maintain your arc (1-2 lbs. of force) is too much. Nearly every school I’m aware of speaks to this point in one way or the other. There are a myriad of classroom and on-track drills designed to help riders relax their arms mid corner, and most students come away with a clear understanding of what the desired end result should be. Unfortunately, the most common thing that follows is those same riders go out and ride at speed and immediately fall back into their own habits (sound familiar?). With a newfound awareness of the tension in their arms they make efforts to relax, but then they spot 112 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM
someone who they want to chase down and revert right back to baseline once again. The common mistake here is that riders tend to focus on the main objective of the lesson (in this case, soft arms). Wait a minute, did I just say that focusing on the main part of the lesson is wrong? In many cases, the answer is yes. Relaxing on the bars is not possible by just using your arms. To execute this practice properly, the force to support your body HAS to go somewhere else. Your body is a large interconnected kinetic chain, and unless your foundation is properly set it is impossible to achieve the desired result. There are two main prerequisites for soft hands; (1) to use your legs to support your body weight and (2) to engage your core so that you can separate the loads in your upper and lower body. Without both things in place, it is impossible to take the force out of the bars (without veering off course). Instead of focusing on your arms, riders should instead go to the very base of the kinetic chain and begin there. The place where you will carry the most load at full lean is on your inside foot, and that is where the first “gem” of self- analysis exists. At full lean, the ball of your inside foot should be on the peg. Most (but not all) of your foot should be over the peg itself. This is not a hard and fast rule, but I usually heavily engage the very outside of the peg at the very base of my 4th toe. The pressure on the peg should be like you are trying to push the peg UNDER the motorcycle. This makes it easy to point your knee towards the apex (which is the angle that provides maximum weight support). Although a few fast riders have made it work over the years, your knee should never be near the fairing at full lean unless you achieve the 60+ degree lean angles of MotoGP riders (who sometimes don’t have space to point their knees out). Finally, the key to making this all work is to actively engage your feet on the pegs. The checkpoint “gem” is that your heel should be higher than the ball of your foot. How much higher? A good ballpark is that your foot should
be 30-40 degrees above level. Using your foot is a powerful checkpoint because as soon as you put pressure on the ball of your foot and raise your heel your core will also automatically engage. Riders with “flat” feet sit with their weight in the seat and pressure in their arms – they have no choice! This simple check is absolutely critical, and not only makes riding with softer hands easier, it almost makes it automatic.
You’ve started at the bottom (and most critical) part of the kinetic chain. A helpful hint to successfully putting this into play is to be sure to start creating your foot pressure early enough. Once you’re leaned over, it’s already too late. You should begin to engage your inside foot as soon as you roll off the gas and begin your corner entry. This allows you to make a change when you are straight up and down and much SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 113

more comfortable.
the bodywork where it should be.
Stage two of this check involves properly placing the rest of your body. Once actively raising your heel early is natural, you’ll want to practice shifting your torso away from the tank and off to the inside at the same time you begin your foot pressure. The finishing touches come when you begin to pull your heel towards the inside of the bike and actively engage the middle of your outside thigh on the tank for added support. When you start making a 30-40 degree angle with your inside foot pointing towards the inside (looking at the peg from the top) your knee will move away from
It all starts with an actively engaged inner foot. This easy-to-implement change is one that far more riders can successfully implement, even when they start to ride too fast too early (don’t we all do this sometimes?). When you couple this with proper torso placement, foot placement and outer leg grip then engaging your core and relaxing your arms will happen easily and naturally. Remember that flat feet = no core = weight on your arms. You can do it!
