FROM THE EDITOR
I
met Claudio Domenicali a few years back at a Ducati press launch. It was the typical situation, in my case, of Italian CEO meets American motojournalist that happens to be the size of a linebacker. We took a photo together, and I remember feeling like he was really excited about the picture. The truth was, I was the excited one, or so I thought.
some good and some not so good. We need to inspire ourselves to triumph over hurdles and navigate through rough waters. I don’t need a reminder that my worst day in the motorcycle industry easily beats my best day in any other. But damn! How can you look at a photo of a buddy who is such a ray of sunshine and not feel great? A picture is worth a trillion words, if not more.
Since then, every time we see each other, it's our routine to take a pic together. And in every picture, my buddy Claudio is smiling so hard, and I am talking full cheese. You all know that I don’t smile in photos, but it’s pretty hard not to when you’re being photographed with someone that is so expressive of their joy. Claudio is the epitome of “positive vibes only.”
I appreciate my friend Claudio for many reasons. But the number one reason remains that he makes a point to let me know how important we both are to each other. If we had a little bit more appreciating floating around, our world might have a fighting chance to be a better place
Best, There is a lot of change occurring in Allan the industry right now, on both sides, allan@sportbikesincmag.com 12 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

handlebars, knobbyish street tires and high
pipes, that's what characterizes a typical Scrambler. The line-up of this class is currently the most successful for Ducati. From the Scrambler’s debut in 2014 until 2017, the Italian manufacturer offered eight different Scambler models ranging from 400cc up to 800cc. Ducati showed great foresight in their diverse initial offering in the Scrambler family, and they’re set to continue along that plan of action with a new displacement category. For 2018 Ducati has developed a bigger, stronger Scrambler with an oil-cooled 1079cc L-Twin, two-valve Desmodromic engine. To help hype up their new model, Ducati invited other members of the two-wheeled press and me to the Scambler 1100 launch in Portugal. At the press event, I had the opportunity to ride the new 1100 in various riding situations: wet and dry, smooth and bumpy surfaces, all on a mix of urban and mountain roads. Even though I, like most riders, wish I could always ride under a bright and sunny sky, these conditions were pretty much ideal for testing the capabilities of Ducati’s new grown-up Scrambler. 28 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

MORE COMFORTABLE SEATING POSITION AND BIGGER TANK The new Scrambler sits tougher, is 50mm wider as well as 69mm longer and has a 20mm taller seat when compared to the smaller Scramblers. It is now more comfortable with a less extreme knee angle and offers a lot of comforts even for longer distances. The handlebars are mounted slightly lower and bring your hands further forward. Therefore, you sit more oriented to the front wheel. Coming in at just under 5’6”, I felt very comfortable on this bike. Likewise, our 6’3” tall colleague had no complaints about feeling cramped. If you want to take longer trips, you’ll also be happy about the large 3.96-gal tank.
LED LIGHTS AND UNDERSEAT EXHAUST Drawing from classic café racer and Scrambler heritage, when riders would tape X’s on their headlights, the Scambler 1100 features a big X-design within the DRL LED ring of its headlight. The main light is a normal bulb while the rear light and indicators are all LED.

DUCATI AND ANDREA DOVIZIOSO HAVE ANNOUNCED THAT THEY WILL RENEW THEIR PARTNERSHIP FOR ANOTHER TWO YEARS
There has been a lot of speculation over the last few months regarding the future of the relationship between Andrea Dovizioso and the Ducati GP team. Dovi is the longest serving rider on the factory Ducati team, clocking in at eight years, by the end of the 2020 season. He joined the team in 2013 and is no stranger to the podium. In 2017, he finished on the podium eight times with a total of six race wins. So why the holdout? Seems like a no-brainer, correct? Compared to his teammate, Jorge Lorenzo, Dovi has proven over and over again that he has the stones to win a championship for Ducati. In the strategic battle of politics and finances, some have said that it is one of the two that has been responsible for the waiting game. They don’t call it the "silly season" for nothing. It is clear to
me that the “hold up” was a total of both politics and finances. With a set budget, it became a question of what Ducati could afford. Dovi has performed and delivered. He’s earned his spot, the good old fashion way. By working for it. “I believe that together we have done a fantastic job so far, but it’s not enough. We want more, and I’m happy that we have reached a deal that allows us to work with peace of mind to obtain better results. We’ve got two and a half seasons ahead of us, all the time we need to try and bring home the world title, which is our aim. I’m very pleased with the support that I have received from many people over the last few days: I could never have imagined staying so many years in Ducati, and ours is really a great story.“ - Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team #04). I’m sure a lot of you skip that part of your reading, wondering “why do you bother with Moto3?” And what I try to explain to you readers is Moto3 is almost a look into the future. It is where World Champions get there start. You think Valentino Rossi started off as “Vale”? No, he had to prove himself in the lowest tier of the World Championships. The 125s of Moto3, this is where Champions are made. On this Sunday, it was a blueprint into last-minute decisions and patience. How so? Plagued by "the incident from the Argentinian GP with legend Valentino Rossi, where Marquez bulldozed himself past not only Rossi but almost the entire field! The talking points were Marquez being penalized three times in the same race! The nontalking points that have to be mentioned are how after all was said and one, Marquez still managed to finish fifth, before being penalized thirty seconds for mugging Rossi! Another talking point was Marquez attempting an apology after the race only to be rebuffed by Rossi’s right-hand man and best friend, Uccio Salucci. To say it was a turbulent couple of weeks for Marquez would be an understatement but was it? Coming into the Austin GP, instead of being a part of the traditional pre-race press conference, Marquez and Rossi had separate press conferences, which, by this point, was overkill! Everyone was tired of talking about it and ready to move on and by the looks of it, apparently Marquez. SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 57

are if you’re a woman at the
track, you’re outnumbered by the number of men there, which can be a good or bad thing, depending on how you think about it. Being a woman in what was known as a man’s sport back in the day is a little nerve-racking for some women, and others powerful. I, for instance, feel both ways. I know that eyes are on you because you’re a woman. People assume you’ll be the one to drop the bike, crash or have the lowest time. On the other hand, I know I can keep up with everyone else, and sometimes even pass or lap them. I’ve done a right amount of track days, pitting with all men. You think men care about what you’re doing, but to be honest, they don’t. They’re there for them, to be their best. The last thing they’re doing is judging you. If anything, they’re admiring you. Nothing is more attractive than a girl in leathers slinging her leg over her bike. Track days aren’t just for advanced riders. There are novice and intermediate groups as well. Men and women ride in all groups. I know some

women who are highly advanced riders who kill it out there. The last thing they’re worried about is what everyone else is thinking. What is really on their mind is to come out on top and leave everyone in the dust. Racing was a man’s sport. Women are taking over, and they’re also dominating. Girls, if you are nervous to get on the track, don’t be. Both men and women are there to help you. Don’t hesitate to ask questions. We are a community, a racing community. 86 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

CUSTOM BIKES, CUSTOM PEOPLE, AND CUSTOM IDEAS... IT ALL COMES TOGETHER FOR THREE NIGHTS EACH YEAR AT THE HANDBUILT MOTORCYCLE SHOW IN AUSTIN, TEXAS.

hen it comes to custom motorcycle shows in the U.S, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better example than Austin, Texas’ Handbuilt bike show. For three
nights each year, downtown Austin is the place to be if you want to see one of the finest collections of truly custom bikes in the world. The Handbuilt Show runs parallel with another savory attraction: the Red Bull USGP, taking place at the nearby Circuit of The Americas. Yet, even with the buzz at the track, on Friday night, it isn’t unusual to see mechanics from the Repsol Honda garage moseying around the venue. Drink in tattoo-armed hand, taking in the proper mood lit sight of dreamy one-off, well everything. Name a brand, and you’ll likely find a perfect ten example. Despite spinning wrenches on the most high-tech and exclusive prototype race machine on the planet— the equipment money can’t buy, there’s SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 111

THE ONLY PREREQUISITE IS HOW BIG YOUR DREAMS ARE AT NIGHT AND YOUR SKILL WITH A WELDER. SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 115
FRICTION ZONE: THE HANDBUILT SHOW just something cool about seeing a turbocharger wedged into an old Kawasaki KZ1000 street bike. While most bike shows are, well how do you say this nicely?… American-centric, Handbuilt is a come one, come all example— a place where it doesn’t matter if you tinker on Harley-Davidsons or Hondas. The only prerequisite is how big your dreams are at night and your skill with a welder. Of course, the amount of time you dedicate to a project after tucking the kids into bed at night is also key. Let's just say, single guys have an advantage. This year’s show grew a bit, moving from the condensed downtown warehouse it had been at for the last couple years, to something more open and inviting, just outside of town. Of course, it wouldn’t be a real motorcycle show without a visit to the Wall of Death. Taking place outside, as the name insinuates, the WoD is a daring carnival-like stunt show where men, and woman, ride their clapped out machines round and round a two-story tall wood-plank silo. Motors roar, gravity is defied, while the crowd jeers on. The fans balance their excitement with the mind-numbing effects of a cold draft beer mixed with whiffs of unburned fuel from the old carburetor-equipped motorcycles. While the daredevils run, food trucks serve, what certainly quantifies as exquisite cuisine in other parts of the country. But in Austin, it’s just standard fare. After all, everything is bigger, and tastier in Texas. If you haven’t penciled it into the calendar, the Handbuilt show is just another reason to plan a trip to Texas next spring for MotoGP. Come for the race, stay for the bikes, camaraderie, and most importantly, the inspiration for that project gathering dust in the garage. 116 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

THE NEW ISH: FEATURED ITEM RAPID BIKE • RAPID BIKE EVO TOTAL INJECTION CONTROL MODULE The Rapid Bike EVO addon module puts in your hands total control of fueling operations as it is directly connected to all stock injectors (up to eight) while managing at the same time the corresponding air/fuel ratio. In this way the carburetion values can be modified throughout the entire engine power delivery curve. The ability to manage stock lambda sensor signal allows performing the exclusive auto-adaptive feature to secure that fueling is constantly adjusted while riding the vehicle. The injection map becomes a dynamic value in order to match the changing weather conditions and driving style. This function is highly beneficial at low and medium rpm where the engine performance is poorly limited due to more and more restrictive anti-polluting regulations. Rapid Bike EVO supports quick shifter sensor (optional), multiple maps management, raising RPM limiter (up to 1000 rpm) and the elimination of speed limiter. For twin cylinders engine equipped with double lambda sensors, it is possible to develop a specific injection map as well as an auto-injection remapping set specific for each cylinder. Installing YouTune controller allows to enable and manage additional features:
