MARC MARQUEZ: SIX TIME MOTOGP CHAMPION Marc Marquez has locked down the 2017 MotoGP World Championship with a dazzling display of maturity and excitement at the final round of the 2017 season. It all came down to the Valencia GP where the only other rider that was close enough to take the title away from Marquez was Ducati’s Andrea Dovizioso. Granted, it was an uphill battle for Dovi and a number of

This is Marquez’s sixth championship, making him the youngest rider to earn six MotoGP Championships. In 2017 alone, Marquez had a total of 61 wins, 102 podiums, 73 pole positions and 53 fastest laps.

BOOT CAMP I
was super excited to attend Colin Edwards Texas Tornado Boot Camp for Halloween this year. I have only attended boot camp once before and have not ridden a dirt bike in two years. I was wondering how much of what I learned before would come back to me, or vice versa how much I forgot. It was very reassuring when Joe P, head instructor, started the first riders meeting with how body position was the main thing that separated the two disciplines. They have so much more in common than I would have thought. School started with a little free ride time and then immediately into super pole. This gives all the riders a baseline for where the current skill level is, and the ability to watch your times improve each day when you repeat the same time trial. After all the riders finish, we get some more free ride time for the first day. Immediately the second day when began running drills. Multiple skill tests to practice rear braking, controlled front and rear braking, sliding the rear end, and many more. I would get frustrated with some of the drills because I could not master them right away. What can I say, I’m a perfectionist. It is very helpful that the instructors stand to the side and watch us. They pull us over and give us advice and tips to work on. This allowed me to correct problems immediately. A big part of the fun of boot camp is that we get to shoot guns during lunch if you want too. This gives us some time to give our body a rest before continuing to ride more. We rode about 6 to 8 hours a day, so SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM | 25

you would start to get sore in spots that weren’t sore before. Halloween boot camp is especially appealing because on Saturday we all dress up in costumes and run our super pole times! I was a "blow up" of a person riding a T-Rex, so it looked like we were riding two up on the dirt bike. It was quite the sight to see! Smooth is fast. We have all heard this expression time and time again. I couldn’t explain how easy it is on a slick dirt surface to spin up and crash. Smooth on the brakes, smooth on the throttle. These same apply to racing on the big bikes, even more so. The more power you have, the harder it is to be smooth. It is very beneficial to learn on a small displacement bike to help build your confidence and try new things versus a large and expensive superbike. This could not have been clearer when Colin himself went out to run his super pole lap. All of us watched him, and honestly, he looked so slow. He was not sliding around or revving his bike high. Yet he was over a second faster than anyone. Any school that teaches a rider skill and new techniques is highly recommended. You can always improve yourself and become a better rider. I personally like when I can have a few laughs while I learn new things, seems I learn more when it is fun! 26 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

hey call it "The Reveal". In movies, that's when you find out who the killer is. Theatre in the round? There is a constant Reveal to the audience. Sometimes you see the face of the main character, other times the actor's back is to the audience for a very brief period but is constantly revealing themselves to the audience over and over again, which is a fitting comparison to the 2017 MotoGP Season. A season that at one point had many to believe, including yours truly, that the championship would be a four rider battle to the last race of the season. Why not? Different riders would possess the top spot of the championship for the first five months of the season. Vinales, Rossi, Marquez and a shock to everyone, including himself, Andreas Dovizioso. It was Vinales who revealed himself to GP fans during the first three months of the season, as he scored three victories in five races, he looked to be in love with his new Yamaha Team. But not to be forgotten was his teammate, a certain Valentino Rossi, who was consistent enough to score three podiums in that time and reel off a victory. It was this consistency which leads us to where we are now. Of course, we expected Five Time World Champion Marc Marquez to reveal himself as a championship contender. However, it is "The Reveal" of Italian Andreas Dovizioso or "Desmo Dovi" as he is sometimes called that has been the real talking point of the season. Having only scored one victory in his previous eleven years in MotoGP, Dovi has six victories this season and a reason to believe that this is the year to bring home a championship. As the championship pendulum swung, the season grew long and the championship looked more up for grabs than at any time in GP history. The boys now faced the ultimate equalizer, what has always separated the pretenders from the contenders... The flyaways! The dreaded flyaways are the Kim Kardashians of MotoGP championship runs. They can ruin championships. Three races on three different continents for three straight weeks with the final week being the penultimate round. Whoever masters the flyaways usually, more often than not, walks away with a championship. Maverick Vinales was twenty six points down going into the flyaways and won the
32 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM
2013 Moto3 title. Consistently, staying healthy and a never say die attitude mixed in with a little luck are the keys to the flyaways. Plain and simple, the flyaways reveal the true contenders and 2017's flyaways treated us to some of the best racing MotoGP had to offer. First up was, the Twin Ring of Motegi. A track that throws everything at you including the kitchen sink. The hardest braking zone of any of the GP circuits. A circuit that gets brakes so hot they are literally impossible to touch. Rain and the occasional fog. This time it was the rain that showed up on Sunday like that relative at Christmas that you don't really like but hey... What are you gonna do about it? It's here. Deal with it! And deal with it was what the riders did. For some strange reason, the Ducatis take to water like ducks to water. Sorry, I had to go there. They get a great drive out of the corners and thrive. Unfortunately, this year the Yamahas deal with water like gremlins! Everything changes on the bike and neither Rossi or Vinales were able to capitalize on some much needed points and watched their championship aspirations disappear like a rabbit in a hat. The only man to challenge the Ducatis was the Repsol Honda of the baby faced assassin Marc Marquez. Marquez battled with The double Ducatis of Dovizioso and Danilo Petrucci until the very end, making a last lap mistake that resulted in Dovizioso capitalizing on Marquez's aggressive riding style and stealing a victory from the Champ. Onward to Phillip Island in Australia. A favorite of all of the riders for its layout. It is a track that riders say, requires "Testicular Fortitude" and GP fans would not be disappointed in what I'm calling the race of the year... Easily. It was a race that saw over 70 lead changes between six, yes six riders! This was NASCAR on two wheels! After the race, the riders literally had tyre marks on their leathers. This was truly anyone's race until the end. Marquez, Andreas Iannone, Rossi, Johann Zarco, Jack Miller and Maverick Vinales were all swapping the lead like Taylor Swift changes boyfriend. But did you notice the name I didn't call out? That's right "Desmo Dovi" was having a horrid race and only managed to finish thirteenth and by the looks of his tyres and the way his bike was handling,
he was lucky to finish where he did. As the battle upfront waged on, fans, including myself, were glued to the edge of their seat like a CNN breaking news report. This was the UFC on two wheels, each rider not giving an inch and literally forcing his way thru on the tarmac that was only made for one bike much less two. At the end of this slugfest, with so much to lose and everything to gain, it was Marquez emerging victorious and gaining a 33 point lead going into the penultimate round in Malaysia. This race was sadly Maverick Vinales' demise, his championship aspirations disappeared with a third place finish. Which meant...
The championship was down to Dovi and Marquez. It whittled down from 4 to 3, to finally 2! With a thirty three point lead and twenty five points awarded to the winner of a race, the math was quite simple. Dovi had to win in Malaysia or Marquez would be crowned champion before the last race of the season. It was in the bag, right? Marquez, at a track he likes, with a thirty three point lead? Money in the bank? Cue the Eurythmics' "Here comes the rain again..." Rain and the Sepang Circuit go together like Donald Trump and tacky! This was Dovi's last stand. Win or shake hands with the champ after the race. But, as the late Nicky Hayden once said,"This is why we line 'em up on Sunday!"

Dovi pounced and won the race and narrowed the lead in the championship to twenty one points. Not As the race reached its latter stages it was Jorge impossible, but... Lorenzo, Dovizioso and Johan Zarco fighting for a podium with Marquez lurking in fourth, like a creeper Team orders or not, Dovi won. Plain and simple. And at a tanning bed salon. This is where it gets tricky. if he loses this championship, he only has himself to Lorenzo so desperately wants his first victory of the blame following a horrible finish at Phillip Island. And season but he also has a teammate fighting for a truth be told, Lorenzo knew what to do. Everyone on Championship. What to do Ducati? Well, depending that grid knew the deal. Your teammate is in the hunt on what you believe, Lorenzo, who says he never for a championship and you're not. We pay you. You saw it, gets a message on his dash that says "change know what to do. And Lorenzo did that regardless of 36 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM
what people may think. Marquez decided discretion was the better part of valor and he settled for 4th, which I know, killed him inside. But this isn't April or March. Its the championship in late October. Do what you gotta do. So it is down to two combatants on two different motorcycles, from two different countries, vying for one place on the top step of the podium and the championship. Although a twenty one point lead for Marc Marquez sounds like a done deal, remember in 2013 when Maverick Vinales was twenty six points down heading into the flyaways and still won the
championship in a winner take all race in Valencia. Or in 2006 when Valentino Rossi had the Championship all but sewn up and crashes in the last race and Nicky Hayden becomes Champion. Anything can and will happen in MotoGP. It's man and machine and sometimes those two don't mix.
THE FINAL SHOWDOWN It was billed as the final showdown and it actually was. The championship theoretically being decided at the final race of the season. Two men with twenty one points separating spraying champagne and drowning in sorrowful tears. Twenty one points is a lot of points

He was soft spoken, raced everyone clean and was well respected around the paddock. Marc Marquez, AKA The Baby Faced Assasin. A racer so fierce he'd wipe his own mother out on Mother's Day for a sniff at victory! Marquez was already a Five Time Champion and it was his twenty one points to lose. A piece of cake for him right? When this is mentioned, everybody brings up 2006, when the great Valentino Rossi blew an eight point lead to the late Nicky Hayden at the final race. How strong was the hype for this final race? Well, yours truly, jumped his lazy ass off the couch and flew to Valencia, Spain to see this championship decider in person. There's just something about watching a MotoGP race in Europe!
not always the case. Some events need over hyping, ala McGregor versus Mayweather. And some? Well, they are what they are. The MotoGP finale fell into both categories. Everyone knew it was a tall task for Desmo Dovi. Twenty one points to the champ? But it was a crazy year in GP. Marquez had three DNF's and was leading the championships. Any other time and it was game over. But it was a crazy year. Who knew Yamaha's top rider would be a satellite rider from France? So, yeah, twenty one points versus crazy year, plus a "win it or bin it" Marc Marquez and you definitely had intrigue, to say the least.
From the first practices, Marquez looked more focused and ready. Dovi, to me, lacked a sense of urgency, but then again, maybe it was just me. Saturday was qualifying day and if you watch from the United States like I do, it is the longest morning of your life. With just over 100,000 in attendance on a warm Sunday afternoon in What helped Jorge's case was he and his teammate Valencia, Spain, MotoGP ran its season finale with crashing out with six laps to go, gifting Marquez the Marc Marquez on the pole and Andreas Dovizioso championship. Anticlimatic? On paper, yes. In the in position seven on the third row of the grid. Dovi atmosphere at the racetrack, I was present at, no. It would need a miracle to win. In the wet in Japan and in the dry in being Marquez basically couldn't take it anymore Austria. This season helped Dovi believe in himself and passed Zarco with ten laps left and cooked it, that he was worthy of a championship. his month we made back to back trips to Texas. The
first trip was out to Houston Motorsports Park (HMP) in Texas and the second trip to Evadale Raceway in Evadale, TX. Each year Redline Powersports host the annual Houston vs Dallas Motorcycle event in Houston, TX at HMP. This years event was delayed due to the effects of Hurricane Harvey which left thousands of Houston residents without power and others homeless due to the extreme flooding. Hurricane Harvey was the costliest tropical cyclone on record, surpassing the record set by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. I remember seeing footage and photos of Houston Motorsports Park under 3 to 4 feet of water days after the storm. This was the first all motorcycle drag racing event held since the storm and from my point of view, this was an extremely special event simply because it allowed the entire bike community to get 54 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

“G
ood Times, Good Friends, Two Wheels”; the quote that continues to be an integral part of the Babes Ride Out
(BRO) event held every fall in Joshua Tree, CA. After it’s inception five years ago, this women’s only celebration of female motorcyclists has become nothing short of a phenomenon with similar events cropping up all around the world. For me, as tempting as it is, to sum up the Babes Ride Out experience in a single quote or even an entire article, is a difficult task. Even so, I shall do my best for the loyal SBI readers! 2017 was my second year attending the ever-growing motorcycle ride and camp out in the desert that’s lovingly referred to as “BRO” and sometimes simply as “Babes”. What brought me back, you ask? I’ll tell you. As a woman, I know that an event solely for women must be full of goodies to meet the general female requirements of a rocking

good time. With that being said, BRO is not just a motorcycle ride and camp out although riding motorcycles is truly what brings all these ladies together. The Joshua Tree campsite is adorned with vendors, food trucks, a stage for live music and of course a mechanical bull providing lots of friendly 8-second competition during the “BROdeo” (clever right?). The onsite food options thoughtfully include vegan selections and cold pressed juices, this is Southern California after all. During the day it’s all about exploring the surrounding sights on motorcycles. Suggestions for ride routes and maps are provided allowing the ladies to choose what best suits their group. Up to Idyllwild for lunch and a change of scenery? Over to the desert wonder of Salvation Mountain for some inspiration? Or there’s always a short ride to Pioneer Town to visit the famous Pappy and Harriet’s restaurant. The options are endless and one thing is for sure, the sheer volume of women on motorcycles is a spectacle, enough to stop anyone in their tracks. Our group had intentions of an Idyllwild ride but after some aggressively strong winds and dropping temperatures we opted to check out Pioneer Town and enjoy lunch. One thing to know about BRO is that it truly feels like a sisterhood. Simply walking through the restaurant to find a seat is an experience of meeting new friends and greeting fellow “Babes” even if you’ve never met. As the ladies start to return to camp after the day’s ride, the evening starts to set in bringing its own action. THE LIFE : BABE'S RIDE OUT and laughter fill the crisp night air. This year we were completely spoiled with live performances by the talented sister duo, Larkin Poe and one of my personal favorite rock stars, Dorothy! With this year’s event being my second go around, it was especially fun to run into friends I had made the year before. Catching up and reminiscing about the previous year’s adventures while meeting new like-minded people is one of my favorite parts of BRO. This is the type of event that you could show up to completely alone and leave with a pack of new girlfriends. Bonus: they ride motorcycles! Packing up camp came with bittersweet recounts of the memories made over the past few days. We talked about not wanting the weekend to end as we rolled our sleeping bags and cleaned our helmet shields in preparation for the ride back to our daily lives. So what is Babes Ride Out really all about? Pillow fights? Sorry to disappoint guys, not the case. For me, BRO is about women having the freedom to be who they are in the presence of other women while sharing one common thread. We all have different backgrounds, live in different places, have different life experiences and crazy pasts but the passion for swinging a leg over a bike and feeling the road under our tires runs deep within each “Babe” that shows up in the Joshua Tree desert during these few days. Just as the old saying goes “You meet the best people on a motorcycle.” See you Babes next year! 80 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM

hen most riders think of using one of their controls more effectively they most often think about extending the maximum values. For example, increasing maximum brake pressure will stop the bike over a shorter distance. Most riders can also squeeze the brakes will full force while fully upright, although a significant number never get there. However, contrary to popular belief, the biggest killer of lap times (and confidence) is not found at the maximum end of most controls.
and then there was an audible tone change as they began to accelerate in earnest.
This month I want to speak about extending the range of your most important control, the throttle. The maximum range of the throttle is easy to find, just twist the throttle until it hits the stop. However, you can measure the maximum speed of two riders on the same machine, both of whom hold it wide open down the straight, and there can be massive differences. On my 1000, I’ve seen almost a 15mph difference between two experts on the short front straight of my home track, never mind between experts and amateurs. Without a doubt, the most important part of a drive came early in the corner, but I needed some concrete data to be able to talk about why.
Using my lap timer I created a segment time spanning from the apex of the corner to my normal brake marker at the end of the straight. At the end of my session, I was prompted to make some subjective notes before looking at the data. When using the proper technique, my bike felt smooth and planted. The bump on the exit was soaked up by the suspension, my bike went right where it was pointed and spun the tire in a smooth controllable fashion. When performing the “two-tone” drive, I had a slightly later application of the gas because going right to 10%, as most riders did, upset the bike up slightly and I needed to be more upright to control it over the transition. Since I could feel that holding the throttle steady kept my speed down, I was able to easily get pointed well up the track and as I passed the designated mark I rolled the throttle quickly to wide open. I surprised myself by doing a little wheelie on the exit of each of those laps, which was not normal for me.
I then watched a highly skilled expert through the same exit and noted that he not only picked the throttle up slightly earlier than the other riders, but the tone of his exhaust also had a steady climb from the moment he applied the gas. His engine climbed in RPM in a linear fashion throughout the exit, and the difference in exit speed was dramatic enough that he outdrove most open class machines on his 600. The early and While utilizing the upper end of any control is slow throttle application resulted in a suspension that important, riders most often lack precision and skill in was rock steady, and acceleration that was driving the bottom 25% of the range. Data acquisition shows him forward from the moment he left the apex. that many riders significantly underutilize the bottom portion of nearly all their controls. This includes brakes, Since track riding is all about finding things that throttle, bar input and more. The classic symptom of provide the greatest duration of advantage, it stands this problem is coasting, the mortal enemy of track to reason that the most important place to gain speed riders worldwide. An interesting tidbit is that I ride is on the exit of a corner that leads to a long straight. a 1000cc motorcycle at reasonably short track, 71 Those extra few mph in the first two seconds create seconds to be precise, and in looking at the data from an advantage that lasts longer than any other on the my best lap of a previous race weekend I was shocked track. To prove this theory out, I hit the track myself to learn that I only had the bike wide open for about with a plan to measure just how big the difference 10% of the lap, and maximum brake pressure was could be. The turn I was watching had a transition on held for even less time. This was after a weekend the exit followed by series of white lines that matched that I won all of my races and set the fastest lap of the “2 to 3 second” mark on the exit perfectly. My the event. 85% of my lap was at either part throttle plan was to run a few laps using the two-tone drive or brake pressure! The importance of the lower end and then several more rolling on early and slow to of my range became even more apparent. extend the bottom range of my drive.
I sat trackside listening to the exit of the very tight chicane leading on to the front straight. I noticed that most riders had what I came to describe as a twotone drive. They would come through the apex and quickly open the throttle to 10%, or thereabouts. They would then hold that 10% for about 2 to 3 seconds, 92 | SPORTBIKESINCMAG.COM
When analyzing the data, I wanted to check my speeds at several points. First was to ensure that I had a consistent corner entry speed, so I took 2 sample laps using each exit method where my slowest speed was exactly the same, 38mph. The first thing I checked was the point of wide open throttle, and my suspicions were confirmed. I actually got wide open a few feet earlier using the two-tone drive than I did using the proper technique. This made sense because the lower roll speed allowed me to get the bike turned more easily and upright sooner. However, when I compared the speed of my motorcycle at the 2 second line the difference was a whopping 10mph slower than when I used the “early and slow” technique! Instead of opening at 10% and holding it for the first 2 seconds, the TPS data ramped up; 2, 4, 8, 15, 20... up to a best of 32% throttle at the key reference point. By the end of the straight, the difference in trap speed went from an average of 142mph to an average of 148mph and the overall split time difference, in the end, was 1.3 seconds. This is a huge difference for changing one corner exit! An interesting side note is that the wheelie I got from the two tone drive was indicative of a problem that
often comes with slower roll speed and late throttle application. The slower method actually proved to be less safe. Slower speed and increased throttle resulted in less weight on the front end during roll-on, giving me less front grip to finish the turn. The problem comes with riders that do not have the direction fully changed, as many newer riders do not, before the really roll on. The combination of continued bar input and reduced front grip often causes the front end to wash out, particularly on long corners. I’ve seen many a newer rider low-side on the exit when applying throttle while maintaining bar input, especially if there is a bump on the exit. Always remember... gas on, bike up! There is not a skill that will drop your lap times faster than extending the bottom range of your throttle application. Riders must focus on the entry and arrive at the apex with proper direction and then open the throttle and take away lean angle as early as possible. If you can steadily open the throttle without ever having to give it up, you’re on your way to faster, smoother lap times. Extend that range! Until next time... Ride fast. Ride safe!
