Happy Anniversary, Fort Lauderdale! As we celebrate our first year of publishing, the Fort Lauderdale Sports & Activities Directory, I’m filled with gratitude for the opportunity to have meaningful work that often feels like play. It has been an incredible journey with a community of many talented, passionate, and kind people in our city. Without our principals, teachers, local businesses, parks, and recreation centers, this publication would not be possible. When I began over a year ago, I decided to take the plunge and leave the finance industry to wholly focus on this new challenge. I went from being an advertiser in the Weston Sports & Activities Directory to becoming the publisher of the Fort Lauderdale Sports & Activities Directory. Boy, was I nervous, but I realized I was in good hands and I knew I was part of something great. With the help of Margot Lyons-Puleri, Nikki Reading, and Julie Kasper, I was able to hit the ground running and call on them all hours of the night. Everyday was a learning experience. With the help of Shelley Jukanovich, Kelly Wilson and my husband, we were able to reach out, one by one, to the local businesses. Many businesses took a leap of faith and have supported us from the very beginning. Throughout the year, we have continuously found inspiration for articles from within our community. Children and their inspirational tales, non-profit organizations working diligently to ensure children have everything they need such as G.A.L., Voices for Children and Children’s Home Society as well as local businesses and their support of Ft. Lauderdale families, have all been featured throughout the last year to bring their positive impact to light. I encourage our readers to read “Breakfast with Santa” on page 55 of this issue to learn more about one such local business. In our holiday issue, I encouraged everyone to reach out and get involved with local organizations. Donations came pouring in and I am so proud to say I was able to provide the “Voices for Children” program with eight large bags of donated toys! As mentioned in the past, I grew up as a foster child. Knowing our combined efforts allowed us to bring gifts to over 500 foster children feels AMAZING and FULFILLING!! February, 2015 represents a fresh new year and a fresh new start. It is exciting to think about the idea of a clean slate and a second chance to do things all over again, but to do them better than the first time. For me, this means reflecting on the past year of publishing the Fort Lauderdale Sports & Activities Directory. Day after day, we will continue to focus on providing articles, images and information Fort Lauderdale residents crave: events, sports and activities, education and family. Thank you, City of Fort Lauderdale, my Sports and Activities family, my foster mom La, my husband Brian, and my daughter Tierra-Nicole!! My Best to you,
Debralen Cula

et ready to paint the town green! On Saturday, March 14th, the Fort Lauderdale St. Patrick’s Parade and Festival returns to the streets of downtown featuring fun and excitement for the entire family. This free event has quickly grown into one of Fort Lauderdale’s largest and most anticipated festivals, attracting thousands of spectators for a one-of-a-kind celebration of all things Irish. This year, the pageantry and excitement begins bright and early at 7:30 am with the Shamrock Run, a 4-mile race starting from Huizenga Plaza in Bubier Park (Las Olas Boulevard & Andrews Avenue) and continuing through Downtown Fort Lauderdale to officially kick off the festivities. The fun continues throughout the morning hours at Huizenga Plaza with live music, a drum line competition showcasing top percussionists from local high schools, an official welcome from Fort Lauderdale Mayor John P. “Jack” Seiler and a traditional Irish Blessing. Then, it’s time for the largest St. Patrick’s Parade in South Florida. The parade begins at noon and travels west along Las Olas Boulevard from S.E. 5th Avenue to Las Olas Riverfront. Led by Grand Marshal Doug Eagon, President of Stiles Corporation, the colorful parade will feature more than 100 decorative floats, pipe and drum corps, classic automobiles, bagpipers, marching bands, animals, Irish dancers, street performers, scout troops, local sports teams, Veterans groups, and so much more. Following the parade, stick around for the best Irish celebration in town at the St. Patrick’s Festival, which runs until 7:00 pm at Huizenga Plaza and along the Riverwalk. Highlights will include live bands, Irish dancers, interactive entertainment, stilt walkers, leprechauns and cultural attractions. Youngsters will love the event’s expanded Kids Zone featuring bounce houses, gigantic slides, pony rides, a trackless train, face painting, a petting zoo, a mini Ferris wheel and much more! The festivities
will also include exhibitor booths, arts and crafts, souvenirs, and plenty of your favorite Irish food and beverages. “One of the main reasons the City of Fort Lauderdale brought the St. Patrick’s Parade & Festival back in 2010 after a 20-year hiatus was to provide downtown businesses with an added economic boost,” said Mayor Siler. “Each year, the St. Patrick’s event attracts thousands of residents, locals and tourists who enjoy the festivities while spending time and money at our downtown shops, restaurants, retail, cultural and entertainment venues. By hosting the event on March 14th, our downtown businesses will benefit twice -- once from the huge crowds that will attend the Parade & Festival and again on March 17th when locals and visitors come out to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. It is truly a win/win for everyone.” On Friday, March 13th, Fort Lauderdale residents and visitors are invited to join Mayor Seiler as he renews a legendary tradition when he paints a green stripe on Las Olas Boulevard to ceremoniously mark the route for the St. Patrick’s Parade. The “Street Striping” ceremony and St. Patrick’s event preview will take place at noon in front of Huizenga Plaza, located at the corner of Andrews Avenue and Las Olas Boulevard. Highlights of the ceremony will include remarks from Mayor Seiler, the St. Patrick’s Committee Chair and event officials; the official introduction of Parade Grand Marshal Doug Eagon; an event preview; and special appearances by a bagpiper and the world’s tallest leprechaun. The festivities will culminate when Mayor Seiler takes to the street with a paint roller in hand to lay down a green stripe on Las Olas Boulevard. decision-making and our community is all the better off because of it. I must also thank the dedicated staff of the CSC who I am honored to lead. Their passion and commitment to the success of our children is what makes the difference to the hundreds of thousands of children and families we have served since our inception. Last but definitely not least, thanks to the voters! November 4th was the culmination of this journey when 76% of the voters said YES to reauthorization! Our commitment to you is that we will continue to adhere to the highest standards of accountability and transparency and will always seek to engage other partners to leverage resources for the greater good. Partners like the Jim Moran Foundation, the Community Foundation of Broward, AD Henderson Foundation, McCormick Foundation, the United Way of Broward County, Broward County Government, Broward County Schools, Broward Sheriff’s Office, ChildNet, the Department of Children and Families, the Department of Juvenile Justice, the municipalities we work with and so many more. As we start a new chapter, we look forward to harnessing all of this positive energy into even greater opportunities for the children and families of Broward County. So to you, the great community with whom we share our lives and work, thank you from the Children’s Services Council Members, Staff, Providers and most important: the Children and Families of Broward County!

I
t has been a long journey since the State Legislature decided in 2010 that the entire Children’s Services Councils must go back to the voters for reauthorization. That journey has forced an agency that was happy to be in the background to put itself front and center. As we began that journey, we found out that only 35% of Broward residents knew who we were. And so, we needed to tell the compelling story of the evolution of the Children’s Services Council of Broward County (CSC) and the Broward child-serving community since CSC’s inception September 5, 2000. This was not a journey we could take alone. We have so many people and agencies to thank for their support and the megaphone they provided for our story. Happily, we found that once people understood the work and worth of the CSC, they became our champions. Thanks are due to organizations like the Community Foundation of Broward, the Broward Workshop, United Way Broward, and the Jewish Federation as well as individuals like Howard Talenfeld, Fred Lippman, Senator Nan Rich, Commissioner Sue Gunzburger, Marcia Barry-Smith, Margarita Castellon, James Donnelly, Wendy S. Masi, and so many more who stepped up in a major way to make sure Broward residents understood what was at stake. Thank you to our Provider Network! I have always said that the CSC can’t succeed unless our providers succeed and that has never been clearer. While CSC provides the leadership, vision and funding, it is our providers who work with the children and families and who help them change their lives in ways big and small. Thank you to all Council Members present and past who have always been committed to transparency, accountability and ensuring maximum dollars are spent in service of Broward’s children and families. That is why we can proudly say that 96% of CSC dollars are spent on program services and supports. Broward’s children have always been at the forefront of their

ach year from 2008 to 2012, Florida had over 14,000 children, ages 0 months to 20 years, in the foster system (datacenter.kidscount.org). Many of those children are assisted in their journey through the help of the Children’s Home Society of Florida (CHSFL). In 1902, CHSFL’s staff of two people assisted their first 21 children find placement with a budget of $400 (approximately $11,111 in the current economy (davemanuel.com)). Within a decade, Marcus “Daddy” Fagg, a keen businessman, became State Superintendent and a guiding light for Children’s Home Society, providing leadership in the child welfare arena. Through “Daddy’s” devotion, by 1947, CHSFL’s staff grew to 54 and care had been provided to more than 53,000 children. As a state and national leader in serving children and families, today, the organization impacts approximately 100,000 children and families through its generous programs and advocacy each year. Children’s Home Society of Florida is a place of safety and hope for abused, neglected and abandoned children and youth. It is the light leading the way for families looking for brighter tomorrows. Children’s Home Society of Florida’s purpose is to protect and heal children while building and strengthening families. At CHSFL, children and teens struggling to survive on their own are rescued and embraced by dedicated professionals who strive to ensure every child has opportunities to grow up safe, healthy and prepared for life. As a national advocate for the betterment and welfare of children and families, CHSFL offers a unique spectrum of programs and services to help protect, comfort and guide families such as clinical services, the Family Preservation Intervention Program and Foster Care. • Clinical Services: In home or in school, individual and family therapy for parents who have a mental health diagnosis and Medicaid funding. This programs accepts all Medicaid HMOs. • Family Preservation Intervention Program (FPIP): Free in home therapeutic services for families with children (from 0-17 years old) at time of enrollment who are struggling to cope with overwhelming life and family stress. CHSFL helps parents learn how to handle stress, frustrations and anger in order to bring peace and stability into their home. This program is funded by Children Services Council and is not limited to those with children under the care of CHSFL. • Foster Care: CHSFL’s unit licenses foster homes in the Broward County area, and receives its funding from Childnet, a major Community Based Care provider in the Broward area. Licensing homes allows placement for children removed from their primary caregivers due
to allegations of abuse, neglect, and abandonment. Currently CHSFL has 58 licensed homes and over 60 children placed in those homes. In order to continue to meet the needs of the children who come into care, more people are needed who are willing to open their homes and become foster parents. In October, 2014, 256 children came into care in Broward county alone (CHFL.org). Clinical Program Supervisor, Dudly Decoste explains how foster parents are supported by CHSF, “Recruitment is an important piece to foster care, it is essential that we continue to try and meet and exceed the need of children waiting placement at Childnet. We strive to provide a sense of community among our current foster parents by conducting on-going trainings, providing support when children are placed in the homes, offering family style gatherings, and financial support as needed.” For those interested in opening their heart and home for a child or children, CHSFL offers “Fostering Hope.” This program specifically targets sessions for potential foster parents interested in helping those who have suffered from abuse, neglect and/or abandonment. Sessions will help families learn about the fostering process and requirements, of becoming foster-parents as well as the joys and challenges. In addition to fostering, CHSFL also invites those interested in volunteer skills or services to the organization such as tutoring, mentoring or even event planning or helping spread the word about the needs of the children. Another need addressed by CHSFL is that for Medical and Infant Foster Parents. Medical foster parents provide care for children who have been evaluated and deemed medically needy. Individuals wishing to foster medically needy children complete the Parenting in Partnership (foster parent training) as well as specialized training to work with medically needy children. Infant foster parents are either stay at home caregivers or have a baby-sitter/nanny as infants under 6 weeks cannot go to daycare. Throughout the year, Children’s Home Society of Florida holds various fundraising and awareness events. One such event is the “Helping Turn Lives Around” luncheon being held April 15th at the Hyatt Pier 66 in Ft. Lauderdale. Swimming and Autism Spectrum Disorders
ndividuals with autism often have no real fear of danger, are prone to wander, and experience heightened sensory sensitivity. Research suggests drowning as a leading cause of death for children on the autism spectrum. In addition, approximately 50% of children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are non-verbal, making it impossible for them to call out for help in a dangerous situation. Teaching a child with autism how to swim unassisted is listed as one of the components of the National Autism Association’s Autism Safety Toolkit. However, children with ASDs require different teaching methods and more time to learn how to swim than a “typical” child does due to the characteristics of the disorder. As a result, children with autism often require private swim lessons, which can be cost-prohibitive for parents who are already paying large out-of-pocket sums for therapies and related treatments for their child. Learning to swim is not only a life-saving activity for these children; it is also beneficial physically, emotionally, and behaviorally. For a child with autism, being in the water has special appeal due to their heightened sensory sensitivity.
Swimming stimulates the nervous system, provides an outlet for excess energy, and has a calming effect. Parents have reported a marked improvement in their child’s social skills and ability to focus after swimming is made a part of their child’s daily or weekly routine. They first swim to live, and then live to swim. Large Muscle Development and Coordination: Every child uses large muscles to swim (as opposed to the “small” muscles used in handwriting). Swimming involves coordinating arms, legs and breathing to say up or to keep going. Cognitive Processing: Swimming is great for cognitive processing of multiple steps or multiple things to do. For example; jump in the water, hold my breath, move arms and legs to tread water, breathe so as to not inhale water, float when needing a break. Relaxation: Water is relaxing and therapeutic. Children who have difficulty processing the sensory input in the world often find swimming to be a welcome paradise. Building Self Esteem: Swimming is a positive accomplishment for any child. Too often, children with special needs miss the goal. They know that they don’t quite measure up at school or with social interaction with peers. Swimming offers the opportunity to succeed that all parents want for their children.

Determination, courage and strength:
those are just a few words that come to mind when you meet Ray Turi. Ray was leading a normal and successful life. He was working at Johnson and Johnson as one of the General Managers for Marketing Strategy. His career was taking him all over the world. He was one of the key people in starting ambulatory surgery in Japan. He traveled in 48 of the 50 States and lectured all over South America, Lithuania, Austria, and many other regions. Suddenly, life took him on a very different path. Two and a half years ago, Ray suffered multiple strokes. He was in and out of hospitals four times and spent a long time in different rehabilitation centers. Today, Ray is in a wheelchair and his daily routine is completely different compared to the one he had as a manager and probably much harder. When I first met Ray, he was about to start his strict exercises regime at ProPilates in Fort Lauderdale. The first thing that caught my attention was his big and friendly smile. He loves to talk and interact with people; his big blue eyes and his positive attitude show a great love for life that you may not expect from somebody who has been through so much, and who is still fighting every day against some of the little things we take for granted. Watching him is an inspiration for all of us! His schedule is intense and strenuous. He does strengthening, balancing, and walking exercises two days a week, Pilates three days a week, and he is trying to find time to fit in some pool exercises (and this doesn’t even cover all the regular activities in between). Just getting out of bed in the morning can require a lot of his energy and strength. In the last few months, Ray has made huge progress, thanks not only to his perseverance, but also to a new approach to exercising called Gyrotonic Expansion System Training. In this hands-on instruction, the coach helps his patient activate parts of the body that need to be stimulated. Through a fluid range of movements, the coach tries to create expansion. It is a strengthening through movement. One of the goals is to try to generate connection and communication
among all the different parts of your body, which in Ray’s case is a real challenge because his strokes caused damaged the very source of that connection. This new system, supported by two great teachers at the ProPilates center, Tonka and Monica, seems to be working wonders on Ray. Since he started just a few months ago, his range of motion has expanded tremendously and he has been able to spin on the bicycle for over 10 miles! His goal is to walk again, and having seen his determined personality and strong character, I have no doubt that he will reach his goal soon. When I asked Ray what was motivating and pushing him and how he was able to overcome all those hard times, he simply answered, “I stay in the zone, I stay focused. I hate being in this chair. I want to walk again!” He also added two very important points: he has never lost his sense of humor and the people around him have always encouraged him, giving him strength. He has two daughters and lots of friends who love him and help him stay on the right track. A special recognition has to be given to the talented nurse, Owen, who has been at his side the last few months, and to the new one, Ochea Mckella, who just started a few weeks ago. It is refreshing and inspiring to see people who take their job to a deeper level. For them it is not a simple routine, but it is an act of love and care towards the person they are helping. They develop a very strong connection that is amazing to witness. What I think we should all take away from Ray’s story is that even in the face of hardship, you can never give up. Ray’s personality and his focus are an inspiration to all of us. We need to cherish every minute of our lives and learn from Ray how important it is to believe in ourselves. We are stronger that we think. Life can be unfair at times, but even in the darkest moments Ray kept going, he kept moving forward. “There’s never such a thing as a problem,” he told me. “It’s just an unrealized opportunity.” What an example to live by for adults and kids alike. Congratulations Ray, you are definitely a hero!

Dear Dr. Corn, W
e’ve been told our 11 year-old daughter has potential to develop into a solid basketball player. This year we allowed her to join a more competitive league; a program committed to excellence. However, the heightened scrutiny on mistakes during practice has diminished her self-confidence during competitive play. What can we do?
Dear Parents, Every Every coach uses a particular interactive style to motivate players. Some
coaches are able to successfully use constructive criticism to fuel a player’s desire to improve and ignite emotional intensity. It’s also possible your daughter wants to perform so well that she may be inadvertently inhibiting her performance due to a fear of failure or not wanting to disappoint her coach or teammates. It’s possible she is stopping herself due to taking the Coach’s remarks to heart as if confirmation of particular flaws and inadequacies. Can you help her find ways to stop being her harshest critic and instead see the constructive value offered in these comments made during scrimmages? Maybe it would help to share this with her Coach and see if he’ll speak with your daughter privately to let her know his comments are not designed as shameful attacks on her character or athletic ability. It may also help to remember that during the early stages of adolescence, (roughly ranging from 11–14 years of age) there are a number of physical, mental, and emotional changes going on simultaneously. Developmentally, teens can show more moodiness and can be very sensitive to what’s being said, especially in regard to their physical maturation. This stage is also a time when young teens want to be accepted and liked by their peers. Hence, there may be worries about not pleasing teammates or fears of not
fitting in on this new team. You need to find out if such an idea is accurate (or not). If so, it may be affecting her concentration too. While many young athletes say they can tune out a coach’s comments, it’s harder to forget the bad feelings as they can linger deep inside. If she is feeling deflated or dejected, she may be having a hard time rising above her doubts and fears. Remind your daughter that every athlete goes through some struggle in the process of becoming better and more proficient. At this stage of her development, she would be better served focusing on task mastery, doing her best, (which is in her control) than worrying about how many points she’s put on the scoreboard. If you can help her learn how to neutralize this negative energy through supportive self-talk (maybe you can come up with a few phrases together), putting her attention on breathing (which is another technique for strengthening mental and emotional control), or finding a way to transform the Coach’s comments into self-improvement suggestions; gradually she’ll develop greater perseverance and determination which will strengthen not only her talent but also her resolve. Lastly, you can share stories of famous athletes that thought about quitting, but through the love and support of family members, siblings, or caring coaches, stayed in the game. These stories and others can be found at our book’s website: www.raisingyourgamebook.com.

Why Can’t My Child Sit Still? P
arents who have children that appear to be in constant motion may become frustrated and often find themselves scolding or even avoiding community outings. No matter how many times they say, “Sit still,” their child simply fails to follow command. This has resulted in children being diagnosed with disorders such as ADHD and eventually being medicated. There are a variety of explanations and many factors to consider prior to seeking a medical diagnosis requiring medication, and/or being able to implement effective strategies or treatment that can relive frustration regarding this common complaint. It is important to consider the age of the child, the amount of time he or she is required to sit, and how much physical activity the child is able to experience within a day. For example, it is expected and necessary for toddlers to experience an excessive variety of movement and touch experiences in order for them to effectively develop their motor and sensory discrimination skills. During the early school years, as children master foundation skills, they are expected and should start demonstrating the ability to sit still for longer periods of time. Past this age, it is expected and necessary for children to master their ability to sit still for increasingly longer periods of time in order to function optimally in life.
Providing your child movement opportunities, prior to tasks requiring attention, and sustained sitting has been proven to be effective. Parents of school age children need to balance movement opportunities and sitting requirements by providing opportunities that let their child run, roll, hang, jump, crash and swing after a long school day prior to expecting their child to come home and sit down to complete homework. Factors to consider other than age and movement opportunities are your child’s ability to obtain or maintain adequate sitting posture, postural support provided for sitting, or even the environment they are required to sit in. Following analysis of these factors, it is important to consider how well your child’s sensory systems are functioning. Important sensory functions you may not be aware of are the proprioceptive system responsible for interpreting pressure, and vestibular sense responsible for balance. The function of theses sensory systems are important for knowing where we are in space and assist us in our movement and ability to sit still. Avoid further frustration for you and your child, as well as medication, incorrect diagnosis, labels that become attached to their medical and school files by considering the factors stated and seeking alternative solutions. Occupational Therapists (OT’s) are skilled at identifying and treating areas of concern that may be impacting your child’s ability to sit still. It is important to find a therapist who is knowledgeable in development and skilled in evaluation and treatment of sensory processing disorders in order to get the right help.

Boosterthon
ould do you like to raise money for your school, having fun doing it and teaching important life lessons to the kids in the process? Get inspired and follow the example of Floranada Elementary. Between the end of November and the beginning of December, the entire school took part in a “Boosterthon.” The Boosterthon Fun Run program is a healthy and fun alternative to traditional product sales that helps raising the much-needed funds for any school. The program also promotes three specific values during the fun-filled experience: Fitness, Leadership and Character. The program at Floranada lasted 9 days and offered different kinds of activities. The students kicked off the action-packed schedule with a school-wide pep-rally and concluded with a Fun Run event. After registering on line, they were getting pledges toward the number of laps they would run (between 30 and 35 laps max). Every student was able to participate in the run, regardless of the pledge raised. They also received six daily character stickers. Each morning, the classes would rotate following different schedules and different activities aimed not only to raise money for the school, but also to teach the kids staples of life. The great teachers and
By Annamaria Preti
staff at Floranada, with the help of the Boosterthon’s energetic team, put together numerous entertaining and interactive activities to grab the students’ attention on those important issues. The kids learned what being part of a “community” means and how important it is to learn to help and respect each other within the community we live in, from a little classroom to the city we share with our neighbors. Every day the Boosterthon team would focus their attention on a specific word or lesson, always connected to the main theme of Leadership and Character. The kids were excited and eager to play their role. Some of the catch sentences used were: “Plug in to serve,” “Amplify others,” “Listen for feedback,” “Play hard,” and “Thank your crowd.” The kids were able to understand the deeper meaning of those teachings through age-appropriate fun activities and put them to work. It was great to see the kids get excited about helping their school and their community. They became young leaders providing a good example to other kids and other schools. The fundraiser was definitely a great success! For more information on how your school can get involved in the Boosterthon program, please visit www.boosterthon.com.

Mr. Serpentini is no stranger to being a generous member of the community he lives in. He was approached by Mr. Miller one year ago and became one of the business partners of the school PTA. Since then, he has sponsored many of the school events and has given over $11,500 in sponsorships in just two years. This year his good heart has exceeded everyone’s expectations. “The least that we can do,” Mr. Miller said, “is to make sure that our business partner at Performance Nissan gets the recognition and appreciation that he deserves from our community and from all of us!” Mr. Serpentini is providing a great example of how one single action can trigger a series of amazing reactions and an example of giving and sharing with the community we are all part of. As the morning came to an end, we realized that maybe we can really find Santa living among us.

o you still believe in the Christmas spirit? If you look around, you will find that there are still people whose hearts are in the right place, good people who love to help others. In a season of giving, it is inspiring to recognize those people and their efforts to make their community a better place. This is exactly what happened on a nice Saturday morning right outside McNab Elementary, when Santa decided to trade his sleigh and arrived, escorted by police officers riding motorcycles, on a fire truck with wailing sirens. When Santa got there, he tried to make room through a very excited crowd of adults and kids of all ages. The event brought together a wonderful Christmas spirit of giving, shared by all of the community and a great initiative to help the hosting school. Hopefully, this is also a fun way of inspiring others to do the same and find different ways to help our school district. The morning started very early at McNab Elementary. The organizers, among whom a special thanks goes to Mr. Burt Miller, Vice President of the PTA at McNab, with the help of the other PTA board members and many friendly volunteers, put together a beautiful breakfast. Numerous families lined up at the entrance to get a spot at the joyful tables set up for the occasion. A wide array of food and drinks was offered to the public, including pancakes, sausage, bacon, croissants, a variety of munchkins and bagels, coffee, juice and water. Everybody got busy celebrating until the announcement of Santa’s arrival. The excited crowd quickly left the room to welcome the special guest who, as always, rose to the occasion by sharing his joyful smile with everyone. After a few pictures with the police officers and the firefighters, Santa reached his place of honor on stage, where a line of kids waited patiently to sit on his lap for a Christmas picture, hoping to be on Santa’s “nice list.” A few vendors in the court of the school entertained the parents with a variety of interesting products and services. The big surprise of the day had yet to come! After a few well deserved

n Saturday 18th, 2014, at Northside Elementary, the second annual Family Literacy Celebration took place. The theme for this year’s event was “Creating Generation of Educational Wealth.” The year before it had already been a huge success with over 500 participants and this year was even bigger. After the first presentation to all of the family led by Mr. Bobby Henry, whose family was the founder of the Westside Gazette, the oldest black magazine in Broward County, a few speakers such as Tia Major, Ed.D, Founder/CEO of Literacy Connection Inc. and Judge Merilene Ehrlich Seventeenth Circuit Broward County, took turns highlighting the importance of the common effort that all of us need to make to try building strong and smart future generations. Mr. Henry was very inspirational and he definitely represented a great example for the kids to follow. His words were simple and direct. He was able to make deep concepts easy to understand, even to the youngest ones present that morning. “Knowledge is power,” he pointed out. “Your brain is a muscle, you need to exercise it!” At the end of this introduction, the kids and the parents were divided into two groups and they both followed a well-scheduled rotation, moving through different activities, focused on their

individual needs. While the kids were entertained in a fun and constructive way by a wonderful group of volunteers, the parents had the chance to participate in various classes, gathering interesting information on different subjects, all aimed to provide encouragement, support, resources, and model strategies that could help promote literacy within our community. The whole morning had a great turnout. One of the crowd stoppers was the school bus parked outside. The parent center on wheels, a supplemental program, is an original moving library where parents and students (in Title I schools) have access (in different changing locations) to numerous information on flash card format that they can use directly on the bus or take home and return to the most convenient location. As this morning of learning and awareness clearly showed, when parents are actively involved, children do better, not only academically, but also socially. Let’s work together to increase their knowledge skills, empower them, and give them a new sense of self-confidence and a renewed sense of community. Together we are stronger than we are alone. For more information on the moving bus, please contact TITLE I Center For Parent Involvement, 701 Northwest 31st Avenue, Lauderhill, FL 33311. Or call (754) 321-1410.
Stranahan High School Medical Magnet Students Explore Medical Issues By Maria Hanrahan, Stranahan High Medical Magnet Coordinator
T
he Medical Magnet Students explored the science behind current medical issues related to the nervous system and the equipment used to diagnose treat and conduct research by attending the Neuroscience Science Discovery Day at Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience in Jupiter Florida on Saturday, December 13th.
While there, the students toured labs, participated in hands-on experiments, and interacted with scientists. As
future healthcare workers, the students were able to relate concepts learned in class with real-life applications in biomedical technology while connecting the potential for innovation with their career interest in the medical field. The students gained a wealth of knowledge in the area of neuroscience that they can apply to their course work in the Medical Magnet program and future careers in health care.
