I hope your 2025 is off to a fantastic start!
There is a very important election on March 11th for the residents of Pembroke Pines, it’s the GO Bond (General Obligation Bond Report). This issue will decide a lot of key changes in our city for the foreseeable future. Please make sure you do your research and have all the facts before you go out to vote. Visit www.ppines.com/blueprint.
Did you know that Pembroke Pines has a former resident that is an Olympian? She is Kendall Ellis, and she is a 2x World Champion, 2x Olympian and she has a Gold and Bronze Olympic medal. It’s very exciting to see a Pembroke Pines native reach such great success. You can read her story on page 30. This issue will cover Spring Break Camp and preview to Summer Camp. It’s never too early to start planning ahead, and now is the time to reserve a space at your child’s favorite camp before they fill up. This year we have camps centered on Art, Aviation, Chess, Dance, Special Needs, Sports & so much more. If you’re not sure of what your child wants, try a camp that does it all. All the information you need can be found within the pages of this magazine, just go to the purple section. And if for some reason you can’t find what you’re looking for feel free to call me and I will try to help you find it.
Pembroke Pines is celebrating a big birthday this year. It’s turning the big 65! Come out to celebrate on Saturday April 26th from 5:00PM-9:00PM. The event is FREE and will be held at the Charles F. Dodge City Center. There is also Savor the Sounds, a fun relaxing Sunday event for families. My favorite event this quarter is Taste of Pines. Many of our finest local restaurants come together under one roof, and you get to sample food from all of them. Get your tickets early because this event sells out fast. The city always puts on fabulous events, make sure to check out the Event calendar for more details.
As always I ask that you visit our advertisers and support them. We’ve highlighted many new and exciting businesses that have opened recently in this issue. Our advertisers are the ones that keep us around, so please don’t forget to tell them you saw their ad in the Sports & Activities Directory.
All my best to you, Linda
Dear Friends,
The New Year brings new changes, and while many of us made personal New Year resolutions, as your Mayor, together with your City Commission, I want you to feel confident in the knowledge that we resolve to maintain a city that is thriving, safe and livable for all.
In response to residents wishing to maintain strong property values and community appearance, the City of Pembroke Pines amended our Land Development Code last June specifically to address vehicles parking on lawns. Two public hearings were held before passing the new ordinance.
The city will no longer allow any vehicles, trailers, recreational vehicles, boats, special use or similar vehicles to be parked on non-paved residential surfaces.
A six-month courtesy warning period was authorized from June until the end of last year. On January 1, 2025, the Code Compliance Department began citing parking vehicles in violation. You can get more information from our website or call Code Compliance at (954) 431-4466. This is being done to improve the livability of our residential communities and to continue improving property values. As our city evolves and resident input expands, we will redouble our effort to respond to resident needs.
On a lighter note, we have many fun special city events that I hope you participate in and enjoy this year. The City of Pembroke Pines Recreation and Cultural Arts Department and the Charter School Foundation is hosting the 15th Annual Taste of Pines on Thursday, February 20th, from 6:30PM-9:30PM at the Charles F. Dodge City Center, located at 601 City Center Way and is a fun annual event that allows everyone to taste the best that our city and local areas has to offer in food and drink. Tickets are $40 plus a processing fee per person – there will be more details on tickets and vendors on our website and social media. Taste of Pines is a great event that benefits the City of Pembroke Pines Charter School Foundation – you can also get more information by calling (954) 392-2116.
Be sure to join us for another season of free concerts with this month’s being held on Sunday, February 23rd from 4:00PM-6:00PM at the Charles F. Dodge City Center Plaza, featuring Live Art Painting and musical performances. Savor the Sounds is the perfect Sunday outdoor event that even includes lawn games for the entire family, Food Truck Cuisine and adult beverages are available for purchase. For additional details on the series, please call the Special Events office at (954) 392-2116.
There’s an important city election being held on March 11th. City Charter questions and a general obligation bond question linked to the City’s strategic plan will be on the ballot. For those of you who prefer to vote by mail, state law requires that you MUST re-register to continue getting a ballot sent to your home. Please follow these easy instructions. Registering for vote-by-mail is easy, by contacting (954) 357-7055 or https://browardvotes.gov/voter-information/ vote-mail-voting.
A series of Townhall meetings citywide will be announced to present information to you about, and answer questions regarding the items placed before you for the March election. Be ready to vote on or before March 11th in person, or even earlier by mail. Please mark your calendars now for this important election. If you have any comments or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office at (954) 450-1020 or email me at acastillo@ppines.com.
Very Sincerely Yours,
Mayor Angelo Castillo City of Pembroke Pines

ByKendallEllis
“I s she fast?” Those were the first words my future coach, Coach Alex Armenteros said to me and my mother at registration. “We don’t know, that’s what we’re here to find out” was my mother’s reply.
A month later, there I was running warm up laps as part of the West Pembroke Pines Optimist Track Club. I have been running since I was 7 years old and over 20 years later, I’m a 14x All-American, 5x Pac-12 Champion, and 2x NCAA Record Holder. But that’s just the collegiate resumé. As a professional, I’m a 2x World Champion, 2x Olympian, and have a gold and bronze Olympic medal to my name.
So, I guess I did turn out to be pretty fast!
I didn’t exactly aspire to be a professional track and field athlete. I knew I wanted to be a “track star”, whatever that meant. I guess 7-year-old Kendall knew something about her future career. While attending St. Thomas Aquinas High School, I won the 400-meter dash at the state meet every single year and the 4x400m relay my sophomore, junior, and senior years. I decided to take my talents all the way across the country to the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. USC was where I made some of my closest friends and won a national title in historic fashion. (Go look up the 2018 NCAA Outdoor Championship 4x400m relay final, it’s worth it). I graduated with my degree in Business Administration and went on to sign a professional contract with New Balance.
My career has had its fair shares of ups and downs, certainly many more losses than wins, and moments I wasn’t quite sure if this was what I really wanted to do. In those times, I’m reminded of my 7-year-old self, who got into the sport because she had fun running around with her friends. I’m reminded of the many kind messages I receive and encouraging letters of those who enjoy watching me compete. I’m reminded of the sacrifices I’ve made, the parties I’ve missed, and the hours of training at practice that I’ve put in.
Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of traveling all over the world, but I am always most excited to be back home in Pembroke Pines. In 2024, I received the key to the city and was inducted into the Florida High School Hall of Fame. Both incredible honors that remind me of where I started and where I’m happy to say I’m from. I host an annual high school meet, called the Ellis Elite 16 Invitational, amongst other opportunities that give me the chance to sneak back home as often as I can. To be able to connect and speak to so many young athletes that are in the same position I was once in, is a privilege I don’t take lightly.
To any aspiring athlete, I encourage you to keep fighting, keep hoping, and keep having fun. Know that I’m cheering you on and cannot wait to see what incredible things you accomplish.
On Friday. March 21st, The City of Pembroke Pines and Miramar together with the American Cancer Society invite you to join them at the 27th Annual Relay for Life Event. The event will be held at the City of Pembroke Pines Charter High School Athletic Field located at 17189 Sheridan Street. Registered Teams will have their decorated booth spaces themed to Come One, Come All, to the Greatest Relay of them All! “Carnival of Life” We are certain to have lots of fun while finding a cure. Kicking off the event will be the Survivor Dinner which will be opened to registered survivors along with their caregivers and family. Opening Ceremony will feature performances, check presentations and of course recognition of the survivors and caregivers with a Medaling Ceremony. The First Lap is scheduled for 7:00PM, where there will be a sea of Purple and Pink to fill the track. Everyone who has ever fought or known someone who fought cancer is invited to walk the track as we cheer the survivors in attendance. At 8:00PM we will light the Torches of Hope, the Torches of Hope are
in remembrance of those who lost their battle with cancer that once walked with us for the past 27 years. At 9:00PM the Luminaria Ceremony will take place; the entire track will be lit with bags honoring and remembering those who have battled cancer. This is one of the most beautiful sights to see the entire track lit with hope. As the evening goes on guests and friends will have an opportunity to compete in the “Miz Relay Contest” and with more activities going on it will ensure we FUN-raise while having fun. Make sure to visit each team booth spaces for amazing raffle baskets, treats and prizes. The Kids Zone will also entertain the youngest guest and provide additional fun. Our HOPE and Mission is to find a cure for cancer. The Pines Lakes Elementary PTA knows that a strong partnership among families, school leaders and community members is important to student and school success. As a result of their efforts to improve communication and include all families, the National PTA awarded the school with the PTA National School of Excellence Award. In response to a severe decrease in membership since COVID, Pines Lakes PTA developed an actionable plan to rebuild, reconnect and re-energize. Goals were included to increase membership, implement programs and services, and engage the school community. When planning each program or activity, it had to align with the BCCPTA vision of prioritizing the health, education and welfare of the children in the community we serve. Specific plans were made to improve the connection with non-English speaking families. Nearly half (50%) of the school’s students are Hispanic and have a parent/caregiver who speaks only Spanish. Partnerships with community organizations such as Memorial Healthcare, Pembroke Pines Police Department, and the Title I Outreach Office were developed to ensure PTA events were relevant to students and their families. Social media was also utilized to promote not only PTA & school events, but also to provide outreach opportunities to our school community. Pines Lakes is an under-enrolled school, and the small but powerful PTA is an important partner in enhancing our programs and getting the positive message out about their Panther Pride. Pines Lakes is one of only 319 schools in the nation to be recognized as a PTA National School of Excellence.
The State PTA also recognized Pines Lakes for the President’s Program Award, which was given for the Spring Fling, It’s a Science Thing. When the PTA plan for the year was developed, it included a robust schedule of programs, activities and support for our school community. The highlight, and culminating year-end event, is the Spring Fling, It’s a Science Thing. The Spring Fling started in 2014 when the new Principal at the time, Susan Sasse, held a school celebration in the Spring. What started as an annual event of fun and games, had been paused since Covid and school shutdowns. The school and PTA saw the opportunity to bring the event back in 2024, but re-build it even better. As active members of the School Advisory Council (SAC) it was known that the school’s student achievement had been struggling since re-opening from COVID. It was decided that Science would be an engaging subject and could be the event’s focus. The idea of grade level science activities for families to experience together was well received by the teachers. Each grade level selected appropriate science hands-on activities and PTA obtained the needed supplies and coordinated all the Spring Fling tasks. Teachers and PTA worked side-by-side during the event to ensure student success and family involvement. This event impacted over 150 students, families, staff, volunteers, community members and even Pines Lakes alumni. Located at 10300 Johnson Street, Pembroke Pines, FL. 33026.

, a small, but exceptional public charter school is looking for students who want to learn in a gifted learning environment. In August, the school will celebrate 12 years serving the students in Pembroke Pines, Miramar, Davie, Southwest Ranches, and Weston. The school has been recognized as the Best Charter school in the community for two years in a row.
GTP began operations in August 2013 and since then, has received outstanding marks in education from the state. “The school’s commitment to excellence in academics and our teachers’ desire to teach BEYOND the STANDARDS, are our greatest assets.” says E. Gonzalez, the school’s founder and Director.
After completing its first year, GTP was recognized as a high performing charter school, and received honorable mention for ranking TOP 3 schools in BROWARD COUNTY for Language Arts. The following year, Greentree Prep was recognized by Governor Rick Scott in the Top 10% category of high performing schools out of 3,265 schools in the State of Florida, was ranked TOP 6 school in Broward County and ranked 22nd out of 514 Charter schools in the state. The goal of the school is to teach students beyond the mandated academic standards for each grade level, while building strong values and character traits.
The school is a K-8 public charter school and has a 100% passing rate in Civics and Algebra in statewide assessments, with the majority of the students scoring above the state and national average scores in mathematics and language arts. Every year, we are proud to salute students who receive top scores in the state scoring “5” in core subject areas. This is attributed to the philosophy and style of teaching used at the school. Students graduating from 8th grade and entering high school, have ranked top of their class in Math and Language Arts in their respective high schools. Parents attribute this success to the academic foundation they received at Greentree Prep Charter School.
If your child is gifted or is a high performing student in their school and is not getting what you feel they need to succeed further, Greentree Prep Charter is the school for your child. The school has a high percentage of High Achievers and Gifted Students and students who want to learn in a gifted environment. With an enrollment of no more than 350 students, every student is a valued member of the school’s community.
The program was created to help students achieve more than the standards in academics. Each child is encouraged to reach their highest potential. The Director of the school states: “We believe that every student is gifted and if given the proper tools and guidance, the student will gain confidence and set higher individual goals. All students attending GTP, will receive the benefit of learning in this type of environment.”
“We are very proud of our staff and our students for always working beyond the standards. We keep our class sizes small, and we offer a strong focus on High Academics and Character Education. Greentree Prep enhanced the technological support programs by introducing many interactive activities and providing individual laptops for each student to receive supplemental assistance in all subject areas.” added founding Principal, Mrs. Pou.
Greentree Prep Charter is located on a 5-acre campus in Southwest Ranches on Dykes Road. The school has a swimming pool, soccer field, basketball and volleyball court, and more. As we kick off a new decade, we invite parents to visit the school and come see what GTP has to offer. Register your child at Greentree Prep Charter School, a free, public school of choice, with high academic standards for students who want to learn in a gifted environment. We are currently accepting applications for students in grades K-8. Contact (954) 780-8733 or visit us at: www.greentreeprep.com. 6301 SW160th Avenue, Southwest Ranches, FL. 33331.
As the new year starts, Pembroke Pines Elementary is buzzing with anticipation and excitement. With a focus on fostering academic excellence, life skills and wellness, and community engagement, this year promises to be one of growth, innovation, and connection for students, families, and staff alike.
This year, we’re thrilled to continue offer a wider range of extracurricular activities to cater to our students’ diverse interests. From SECME and Art club to our Kraken Choir, there’s something for everyone. Sports enthusiasts can also look forward to our sports club promoting teamwork, physical fitness, and school spirit. We will also have a talent show in March, which will showcase the many talents of our students!
We are proud to be recently designated as a Special
Olympic Unified Champion School. This program is aimed at promoting social inclusion through intentionally planned and implemented activities affecting systems-wide change in K–12 schools. Our school strives to be a place where students with disabilities feel welcome and are routinely included in, and feel a part of, all activities, opportunities and functions. The new year will be filled with opportunities for discovery, connection, and achievement. As we embark on this journey together, we invite families and community members to actively participate in making this year unforgettable. From volunteering in classrooms to attending school events, your involvement is vital to the success of our students. Let’s make this year one of inspiration and growth, where every child is empowered to shine! We are located at 6700 SW 9th Street, Pembroke Pines, 33023..
S ilver Palms Elementary School is a vibrant community where students thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. At the heart of everything we do is a commitment to creating a safe and nurturing environment where our students, affectionately called our “Kind Kiddos,” can shine.
Each year, Silver Palms hosts an array of fun and educational activities that bring our school family together. One of our most cherished traditions is Reading Under the Stars, an evening event where students and their families gather to celebrate the joy of reading. Picture blankets spread out under the night sky, flashlights illuminating favorite books, and the sound of young readers sharing stories with their loved ones. It’s a magical experience that fosters a love for literacy and strengthens the bond between school and home.
Our Book Fair is another highlight, transforming our media center into a bustling hub of excitement. Students eagerly explore the shelves, discovering new adventures and expanding their imaginations through the power of books. The Book Fair not only promotes reading but also teaches the importance of setting goals and budgeting as students save up to purchase their literary treasures.
Recognizing and celebrating character is a cornerstone of our school culture. Our Kid
of Character Ceremonies honor students who exemplify traits like kindness, responsibility, and respect. These heartwarming events inspire everyone in our school community to strive for excellence in both academics and character, reminding us all of the impact of kindness.
At Silver Palms, safety is always our top priority. We believe that students learn best when they feel secure, supported, and valued. From rigorous safety protocols to fostering a culture of inclusivity, we ensure that every child has the foundation they need to succeed.
But our mission extends beyond academic achievement. We are dedicated to helping our students become compassionate, world-changing individuals. Through engaging, meaningful educational opportunities, we teach our Kind Kiddos to embrace kindness as a way of life. Whether it’s through service projects, peer mentorship programs, or daily acts of kindness, our students learn that small actions can make a big difference.
Silver Palms Elementary is a place where students don’t just learn—they grow into thoughtful, empathetic leaders who are ready to make the world a better place. We are proud to be a part of the Pembroke Pines community, and we invite you to join us in celebrating the incredible achievements and spirit of our Kind Kiddos. Together, we are shaping a brighter, kinder future for all. We are located at 1209 NW 155th Avenue, Pembroke Pines 33028.
Pembroke Lakes Elementary school students and staff focus on academics but also know how to have fun! We stay busy, in and out of the classroom.
Pembroke Lakes Elementary hosted guest readers from across our district and community to participate in Read for the Record. Our guest readers read, Piper Chen Sings by Phillipa Soo to our Kindergarten students. They loved hearing from our guests and thoroughly enjoyed the book! We ended the month with our Storybook Character Parade. Continuing to promote a love for literacy, students were encouraged to dress up as their favorite storybook character. A good time was had by all!
A special thank you to Publix in Village Square for hosting our PLE families for Publix Math Night! Our teachers welcomed our students and their families to engage in critical thinking activities throughout the store. Mrs. Orrett, 4th grade teacher said, “Publix Math night is an event we look forward to annually, providing our students with a chance to practice Math with real-world situations.”
In honor of Veterans Day, The Food and Nutrition Services Department was excited to celebrate our Veterans. We invited Veterans or active military, who are relatives of our students to be our guest and enjoy a complimentary breakfast with their family member. We appreciated our servicemen and women!
Pembroke Lakes Elementary is proud to have a thriving Elementary Speech and Debate Club with about 30 enthusiastic students. As part of a district initiative, the program introduces students to the art of public speaking and debate at an early age, helping them build confidence, communication skills, and teamwork. Students dive
into various areas of speech and debate, including Original Oratory, Interpretation, and Duo Interpretation. Students worked hard, both individually and in pairs, to refine their skills and perfect their craft. After the first competition in October, five students walk away with medals, earning 1st or 2nd place in their competition rounds. Even those who didn’t receive medals, walked away with a newfound confidence in themselves for stepping up to try something new—because public speaking is no easy feat! Adding to the excitement, district representatives recently visited the club to share insights about the newest competition category: Public Forum Debate. This engaging format has sparked great interest, and three teams eager to compete in the upcoming January competition. Mrs. Moran, Speech and Debate Coach shared, “We can’t wait to see their continued success in the months ahead!”
We kicked off our winter festivities with our Drama Club performance and Chorus concert! The students shined as they recited different monologues and sang classics celebrating various holidays. Our chorus students also performed for our community at the beautifully decorated home in the Pembroke Lakes community. A special thank you to the Lahara-Graziani family for hosting our chorus students and our PLE family. It was a wonderful night! The festivities continued through field trips as well. Our second and third grade students had the opportunity to visit Oakmonte Village Assisted Living Facility in Davie to sing holiday carols and spread holiday cheer to senior citizens.

Pembroke Pines Charter East Campus is excited to announce its participation in the Everglades Foundation’s Champion Schools Program, an initiative designed to deepen students’ understanding of and appreciation for the Everglades ecosystem. This innovative program integrates the study of the Everglades into various academic disciplines, helping students connect with one of Florida’s most treasured natural resources.
As part of the program, teachers from all campuses participated in an immersive Everglades Literacy training. This professional development opportunity provided educators with a comprehensive understanding of the Everglades’ history, ecology, and significance, equipping them with the training and supplies to teach the engaging, grade-specific lessons. The training aims to inspire teachers who in turn, inspire their students not only to learn about the Everglades but also to develop a sense of responsibility for protecting it. The day was an exhilarating experience, giving the teachers all the tools they needed to implement this very special and important program.
The program is already making waves in the classrooms. Third-grade students have taken on a hands-on project, creating two models that showcase the historical and current water flow of the Everglades. Meanwhile, kindergarteners are engaged in an exciting comparison and contrast activity focused on the diverse animals that call the Everglades home. Fourth-grade students are working on a cross-curricular project that involves creating a Slides presentation about an Everglades animal, combining research with technology skills. Beyond the classroom, the school has launched a number of other exciting projects to further engage students. The Earth and S.T.E.A.M. Clubs have received grant funds
to design and build a butterfly garden, aimed at attracting butterflies native to the Everglades. They recently held a design contest to find creative ways of keeping iguanas out of the garden so that the plants can thrive without being eaten. The school’s upcoming Multicultural Night will feature a large diorama of the Everglades, showcasing the integration of art, science, and technology. Additionally, the school has adopted a green sea turtle and is tracking her movements in the Florida Bay, providing students with a real-time connection to the ecosystem they are studying.
Later this year, as part of their curriculum on Florida’s history and geography, fourth grade students will go on a special field trip to explore the Everglades. The trip will feature an exhilarating airboat ride through the heart of the Everglades, giving students the chance to witness this iconic ecosystem up close. During the ride, the students will collect data to analyze back in the classroom, reinforcing their understanding of the Everglades’ significance to Florida’s environment and wildlife.
“We are thrilled to be part of the Everglades Foundation’s Champion Schools Program,” said a school spokesperson. “It’s been inspiring to see our students take such an active interest in learning about and protecting the Everglades. We’re already seeing them demonstrate their knowledge and passion for this incredible ecosystem.”
The Pembroke Pines East Campus community is proud to be part of this important environmental education initiative, and the school looks forward to continuing to inspire and empower students to become the next generation of Everglades stewards. We are located at 10801 Pembroke Road, Pembroke Pines, 33025.
