The new year is off to a great start, spring is in the air and what a lovely time it is to live in South Florida. We are coming into my favorite time of year. The clocks spring ahead, the evenings are longer and we can enjoy the beautiful weather. It’s the perfect time for playing sports, attending events and enjoying activities outdoors in the fresh air. Our cities have some great events lined up this spring. Come out to the 88th Annual Orange Blossom Festival, Parade & Rodeo in Davie over the weekend of February 21-23. On March 8, The City of Cooper City is hosting Founder’s Day, an annual day-long event, beginning with a parade, an afternoon of family-fun activities at Brian Picolo Park, that ends with an evening of fireworks! The City of Plantation has a host of events lined up from Dr. Suess’s Birthday, Touch-a-Truck, and an Earth Day Celebration. Of course, there will be Egg Hunts, too, so be sure to turn to our Calendar of Events in the Around Town section for locations and times and to check out all the fun!
It’s a new season for sports, and registrations are happening now. You can find them all in the Main Directory in the red-tabbed section. Spring break is the week of March 24 for Broward County Public Schools, so be sure to page through our Main & Camp Directories to find some great options to keep your kids engaged. It may seem early, but February and March are the perfect times to explore and register for Summer Camp 2025. We have a special, purple-tabbed section featuring Summer Camp in this issue that’s full of fun, sports, enrichment & educational programs for children of all ages. From monthly camp sessions to weekly camps or day camps, there are plenty of options to choose from. Find one that your child will enjoy. Maybe he or she would like to try horseback riding, basketball, soccer, volleyball, acting/theatre, robotics, languages, academics, or learn to play a musical instrument this summer. Whatever you choose, we have them all covered. I’m confident you’ll find the perfect fit.
Thank you for your continued readership and patronage to our clients. Be sure to tell our advertisers you found them in Sports & Activities Directory.
Wishing you a happy, healthy spring!
My Best to you!

I hope the holiday season was filled with many moments of joy, love, and laughter with those you cherish most. It is very exciting to write to you for the first time within this publication since being elected your new Mayor. Spring is around the corner, and it signals the return of Cooper City’s Founder’s Day! This signature day in “Someplace Special” will be taking place on March 8, 2025. I look forward to spending a fun-filled day alongside residents and visitors. Our Parks and Recreation Department is working on a schedule filled with themed events and activities for people of all ages to enjoy. Founder’s Day will get started with a one-mile run and a parade down SW 90th Avenue to go along with all of the traditional pomp and circumstance. Afternoon activities will be held at Brian Piccolo County Park, where the evening concert and fireworks show will cap off the exciting day. Please visit the City website at www.CooperCity. gov/Calendar to see a full list of activities and do not forget to follow the City’s social media pages to receive updates and notifications about all City events and programs.
Coming up in April, I hope you will make your way over to Flamingo West Park for an “Egg-Stravaganza.” The egg hunt is always an enjoyable opportunity for friends and neighbors to get together and spend quality time at one of Cooper City’s beautiful parks. Of course, the coming months bring meaningful days on the calendars of our religious communities. My wish is that the holy month of Ramadan is filled with many blessings for our Muslim neighbors, I pray that our Jewish brothers and sisters enjoy a happy and healthy Passover, and for our Christian community to be filled with hope, love, and peace this Easter.
The spring season is a time for new beginnings and there are many new things happening in Cooper City. Our Parks and Recreation Master Plan is in development and has received incredible input and suggestions from many community members. The purpose of this plan is to set the course for programs, activities, and facilities that meet and exceed the needs of our residents.
Additionally, please save the date for many other City events. If you are looking for great deals and bargains, our next communitywide Garage Sale will be held on Saturday, April 5 at Flamingo West Park starting at 7:00AM. Remember, the early bird gets the worm so don’t miss out! Get ready for live music and food trucks at Eat to the Beat on April 11 at 6:30PM at Suellen H. Fardelmann Sports Complex. Also, we look forward to celebrating all our Cooper City moms this Mother’s Day. Registration for our annual Mother’s Day Tea opens on April 2. The event will take place at Cooper City High School on May 3.
These are just a few of the wonderful happenings in “Someplace Special” and I invite you to be a part of it all. Please get involved and share your thoughts and opinions at City Commission meetings.
As always, please feel free to contact my office with any questions or concerns you may have by dialing (954) 434-4300 and pressing option #6.

James Curran Mayor of Cooper City
Happy New Year! I hope that everyone had a happy and healthy holiday season with family and friends. If you haven’t heard, the Town of Davie is hosting a yearlong celebration leading up to our 100-year anniversary in November of 2025. We have a many exciting programs and events planned for all our wonderful residents and visitors as we celebrate our centennial. It’s hard to believe that it is once again time for one of Davie’s long-standing traditions, the 88th Annual Orange Blossom Festival, Parade and Rodeo. The festival activities will officially begin with a Kickoff Concert in the Park on Friday, February 21st from 6:00PM-9:00PM. The evening of family fun will include live music, arts & crafts vendors, children’s activities and more. Food and beverage will also be available for sale. Please be sure to bring your blankets and lawn chairs, so that you and your family can enjoy the band performing under the stars. The Saturday morning parade will begin at 10:00AM sharp on February 22nd. The parade will again be hosted inside Bamford Sports Complex. Please arrive early to secure the best spot along the parade route. The festival grounds at Pine Island Park/Bamford Sports Complex will open immediately following the conclusion of the parade. This year’s festival activities include arts & craft vendors, musical entertainment, “Cowboy Town” petting farm and western carriage display, cow patty bingo, a farmers market and information displays. There will also be a Kids Korner with rides and activities for children of all ages to enjoy. In addition, for all the dessert lovers, the Davie Woman’s Club will host the annual Strawberry Festival which has the best strawberry shortcake in Florida! The Weekly Brothers will once again present the Orange Blossom Championship Rodeo at 7:30PM, on Saturday, February 22nd, and at 2:00PM, on Sunday, February 23rd. I can’t wait to see everyone in “Cowboy Town,” to celebrate 100 years of trail blazing, during one of my favorite yearly events.
The Town of Davie also offers numerous other events and programs for our residents and visitors throughout the year. Join us on Friday, March 14th and Friday, April 11th from 6:00PM-9:00PM, at Pine Island Park/Bamford Sports Complex, for the popular Sounds of the Town Concert Series, that features local bands and food trucks. On Saturday, April 19th, one of the Town’s most popular annual events, the Hippity-Hoppity Egg Hunt, will take place from 9:00AM-12:00PM at Pine Island Park/Bamford Sports Complex. Admission is FREE for Davie residents and includes an egg hunt for children ages 0-11. Children will be divided into age groups and special prizes will be awarded for secret eggs. Those in attendance will also enjoy inflatable rides, a petting farm, train rides, a DJ party and bunny ears. Additional activities (at a cost) include face painting, arts & crafts vendors, pictures with Peter Cotton Tail and food trucks. Don’t forget your cameras and baskets! Also, the Town’s annual Davie Jazz Festival will take place on April 5th, 2025, at the Davie Arena. The music begins at 6pm, and we invite you to come enjoy both local and international artists, as we bring our community together to celebrate the positive influence jazz music has on South Florida. Tickets can be purchased by visiting the Town of Davie website.
Participation in Davie’s numerous recreational programs and activities provides many health benefits to youth, adults, and seniors. Whether it’s swimming, fitness, youth sports, senior activities, special events, or recreation classes that interest you and your family, the Town of Davie has something for everyone to enjoy. As you browse through the Sports & Activities Directory, keep a lookout, as all the programs provided by Davie Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Arts Department begin with “Davie”. For more information on any Town of Davie program, please call (954) 327-3941.
As always, see you at the parks!
Sincerely,
Judy Paul Town of Davie Mayor
By this time of year, parents have their routines down: Take the children to scHappy Spring Plantation! I hope everyone is getting outside and enjoying our world-renowned weather before the humidity of summer rolls in. We have some events you’re likely familiar with, but we are always tweaking our lineup. So, there’s plenty new to enjoy…
The one I’m most excited about is the reformatting of our city’s signature fund-raising event: Relay for Life. For as long as I can remember, businesses, charities and schools gathered at Plantation Central Park for a night of fun and support for the American Cancer Society.
Then Covid hit and the turnout suffered.
But this year there’s a boost: Supporters from Davie, Cooper City and Weston, including the elected officials you see writing on these adjacent pages, are invited for a community roundup of sorts. We’ll take the best ideas and all that enthusiasm, rake it into a big pile and hope to have a memorable event.
It’s from 5:00PM-10:00PM on Friday, April 25, at Plantation Central Park. Go to RelayForLife.org/PlantationSunriseFL.
Before that, March is not only when Daylight Savings Time begins (March 9) but also Florida Bicycle Month. On March 8, you can join the Plantation Police Department on a Family Bike Ride through the streets of Plantation. You will need to pre-register at one of our community centers. I’ve heard the Parks and Recreation Department serves a pretty-great breakfast after the adventure.
If your kids get a kick out of big construction vehicles, go to the Plantation Equestrian Center for Touch-A-Truck on Saturday, March 15. This is an event that many of the City’s departments look forward to. It is an opportunity to show off our big kid toys and open our police and fire vehicles to all.
Spring Break for our public-school kids is at the end of the month, and if you are not living it up vacationing, we will have a Spring Break Camp at Central Park. Do your children love to run, swim, and bike? For the first time, the city is holding a Children’s Triathlon on April 12 at Central Park.
Of course, this season would not be complete without an egg hunt. With the support of the Plantation Woman’s Club, the Royal Egg Hunt, along with games, arts & crafts, inflatables, food, and more, will be April 19 at Pine Island Park.
These are just a few of the events happening this spring. For more information, please visit our calendar at www.plantation.org or any of our social media platforms.
Increased resident access to information flowing from City Hall and two-way communication with you has been one of my main priorities and remains a focus area for 2025. If you wish to contact me directly, my email address is Mayor@Plantation.org.
Sincerely,
Mayor Nick Sortal Mayor of Plantation

Superhero Swim Academy’s mission is to spark imagination and creativity through swim lessons. We are excited to educate parent’s this month with the following article getting ready to move into the warmer months.
Swimming is defined as the act of moving through water using the arms and legs, but for many children, it’s much more than just a physical activity—it’s a journey that requires time, patience, and gradual progression, such as learning a musical instrument or a subject in the classroom. As a parent, understanding the three stages of swimming—comfortability, safety, and proficiency—can help set realistic expectations and foster a positive experience for your child.
Stage 1: Comfortability: Before any real swimming instruction can take place, a child must feel comfortable in the water. This is especially crucial when introducing infants to swim lessons. Early exposure can significantly reduce the chances of developing a fear of water later on. For older children, particularly those who may be fearful, starting swim lessons at age three can be a challenge.
During the comfortability stage, expect some resistance. It’s common for young children to experience anxiety, especially when separated from a parent, surrounded by a new environment, or working with a swim coach they don’t know. You might witness blood-curdling screams and tantrums during the first few lessons, but it’s important to remember that this is part of the process.
This phase may feel slow, and at times painful. You may find your child kicking and screaming being supported while floating back, having water poured over their head, or being submerged briefly. While it can be hard to watch, this discomfort is a necessary step toward building confidence. Just like quicksand, panic in the water can lead to exhaustion. Calmness fosters buoyancy, making it essential for your child to become at ease in the pool.
We have seen firsthand by lifeguarding the summer swim program at The Learning Nest Preschool in Plantation Florida, that the kids who came and got in the water each day for the full summer gained a comfort level to surpass the beginning levels of our swim program.
Stage 2: Safety: Once your child has established a level of comfort, the next focus is on safety. This stage involves teaching essential skills that will help your child navigate water confidently and securely. Important lessons include jumping into the water and swimming to the nearest exit, floating, climbing out of the pool safely, and swimming out and rolling over for a breath. Additionally, it’s crucial
to emphasize the importance of never swimming alone, reinforcing that a buddy system or adult supervision is always necessary.
Teaching safety skills to young children can be challenging, particularly because their attention spans are short, and their understanding of risk may be limited. However, reinforcing these skills in a fun and engaging manner can make a significant difference. Use games and play to help your child practice safety techniques. When they’re comfortable and know what to do, and their confidence will increase.
Stage 3: Proficiency: The final stage of swimming is proficiency. At this point, your child will be introduced to swimming strokes, starting with freestyle, with the goal of swimming from one side of the pool to the other with movement in both arms and feet, taking breaths in-between. Proficiency involves refining their strokes, increasing endurance, and becoming familiar with various swimming techniques.
Children new to this stage are usually more excited about swimming, and you’ll notice that they begin to take more initiative in the water. Encouraging them to practice regularly and perhaps introducing them to swim teams or classes can further enhance their skills.
When to Take a Break from Swim Lessons: Expect children will get stuck at one of the stages during the process. When this happens, it is a sign that it is time for a break. Common signs to take a break include; children get agitated easier during lessons, lose interest, resist going to lessons, or are too young to move on to the next skill level. Make sure to talk with your swim provider first on the issue. When needed a two-to-four-month break can make all the difference in your child’s ability to pick up on the skill or advancing to the next level when they return.
Conclusion: Getting a child to swim; the act of moving through water using the arms and legs, is a process that unfolds over time, not an overnight sensation. By understanding these three stages—comfortability, safety, and proficiency—you can better support your child on their swimming journey with a better understanding of knowing what to expect. While the initial stages may be tough, your dedication and patience will pay off, leading to a confident swimmer who enjoys the water safely. Remember, every child learns at their own pace, so keep the focus on progress, not perfection.

The COVID-19 pandemic changed the world. The aftermath ignited an increase in emotional dysregulation. Simultaneously, children are given internet accessible devices at earlier ages allowing for information delivery that they are not emotionally or intellectually ready to process. The result? Increasing levels of emotional concerns that are bubbling to the surface. As mental health professionals we have the ability to help children and their families navigate worries, build resilience, and regain their sense of safety. Early intervention with proper support, is crucial.
Why Are Children Feeling Anxious? The pandemic created tremendous uncertainty, from school closures to social isolation. Anxiety feels like an invisible cloud over children’s thoughts and emotions. It can show up as sleepless nights, nervousness around socializing, or reluctance to leave home. Most children do not have the words to describe their feelings. Their behavior, however, is a window into their functioning. Research shows that childhood anxiety has increased since the pandemic. A global study involving 80,000 youths found that the prevalence of anxiety symptoms doubled during this time, with approximately 20% of children and adolescents experiencing significant anxiety. Additionally, there has been a sharp rise in pediatric mental health, including depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and suicidal thoughts.
Anxiety looks different in children than it does in adults. Here are signs:
• Avoiding activities: Including missing school, avoiding friends, or quitting hobbies once enjoyed.
• Increased clinginess: Your child might want to stay close to you more than usual or express fear about being apart from you.
• Trouble sleeping: Anxious children might experience nightmares or difficulty falling asleep.
• Physical complaints: Stomachaches, headaches, or other physical symptoms are linked to anxiety.
• Acting out: Children might express their anxiety through irritability or tantrums, especially when overwhelmed by their feelings.
What Can Parents Do to Help? As a parent, you have the power to create an environment that supports your child’s emotional well-being. Here are steps to help your child manage anxiety:
• Normalize Their Feelings: Reassure your child that it is okay to feel anxious. Anxiety is a natural response to uncertainty, especially after significant changes.
• Provide a Stable Routine: Consistency is key. A predictable routine, from mealtimes to bedtimes, helps your child feel grounded and secure.
• Validate and Listen: Let your child express their feelings without judgment. Sometimes, just listening to their concerns can ease their worries.
• Encourage Gradual Exposure: If your child struggles with anxiety, help them take it step by step. Start with more minor, manageable situations before addressing more significant challenges.
• Model Calmness: Children learn by example, so they may feel inspired to do the same when you handle stress calmly. Show them how you manage stress through deep breathing, exercise, or relaxation.
When to Seek Professional Help: If your child’s anxiety is is preventing them from going to school, participating in activities, or enjoying life it is time to seek help from a psychologist. Therapy is highly effective in treating anxiety in children. A psychologist can help pinpoint the root causes of your child’s anxiety and work with them (and you!) on effective ways to manage it. Silver Ridge Elementary School is proud to offer service clubs that work very hard to help others not only during the holiday season of giving and of spreading joy and hope to others, but all through the year.
Our SAVE Promise Club members (Students Against Violence Everywhere) meet monthly to create and share positive messages of kindness and inclusion. They have created kindness posters with positive messages as reminders of how we should treat others. These positive messages are heard during the morning announcements as a reminder as we begin our day. The club has also created and shared “Kindness Cards” with others to spread positive messages throughout the school.
The SAVE Promise Club participated in our annual Silver Ridge Night of the Arts along with our school chorus and student artists. Our Night of the Arts takes place during the first week in December each year. This is always a special week at Silver Ridge as we all work together on a school wide project to celebrate “Inclusive Schools Week.” Since its inception in 2001, Inclusive Schools Week has celebrated the progress that schools have made in providing a supportive and quality education to an increasingly diverse student population, including students who are marginalized due to disability, gender, socio-economic status, cultural heritage, language preference, and other factors.
Our National Elementary Honor Society (NEHS) members have also been busy
assisting with our annual Harvest Drive and our annual Toy Drive. In addition, they recently spent an afternoon with several of the residents at Oakmonte Village. This has become an annual event and residents who enjoyed last year’s visit were happy to share an afternoon creating a craft, having lunch, and just conversing with our new NEHS members. Students love hearing from the residents about where they were from, experiences they have had through the years, and just hearing about the “old days.” Residents really enjoy the energy and enthusiasm of the students.
Our NEHS members are also busy week after week here at SRE as many of them assist in Kindergarten or 1st grade classrooms. When asked what the best part was, NEHS member Taylor Bonecutter shared, “When we come in, it’s during center time, and the students get all excited and say, It’s Taylor and Landon!” Each week they may read with a few students or play a letter or word game to strengthen their skills. Taylor also shared that she thinks the kids feel natural and relaxed with them because “it’s a kid with a kid.”
Opportunities for service are always encouraged at Silver Ridge Elementary as it is important for students to know that they can and do make a difference. This is just part of what it means to be a member of our Silver Ridge Family.
Silver Ridge Elementary is located at 9100 SW 36 St., Davie, 33328 and can be reached at 754-323-7500.
Mirror Lake Elementary Magnet School recently celebrated International Day of the Girl. The school hosted an event where 13 female engineers, along with students and professors from Florida International University’s (FIU) Engineering Program, spoke to our third thru fifth-grade students. The event was dedicated to encouraging young girls to explore STEM fields, providing students with unique insights into the engineering world, covering a range of topics from career challenges and successes to educational pathways. The visiting panel shared powerful messages of resilience, achievement, and motivation, aiming to empower the next generation to consider futures in engineering.
The panel featured engineers from a variety of backgrounds and organizations, including the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), Florida Power & Light (FPL), Lockheed Martin, and city engineers from the cities of Plantation and Hollywood. FDOT engineers discussed the work involved in designing and maintaining Florida’s vast transportation infrastructure, captivating students with how roads, bridges, and highways come to life.
Engineers from FPL introduced the audience to the world of energy systems, explaining how they work to keep communities powered efficiently and sustainably. Lockheed Martin representatives brought students into the world of aerospace and defense, describing the advanced technology that protects the nation and helps reach new frontiers in space. City engineers from Plantation and Hollywood engaged students with their work on public projects that improve infrastructure and enhance daily life for residents.
Students and professors from FIU’s Engineering Program discussed the educational pathways that lead to engineering careers. FIU students shared their journeys, describing how they found their passion for engineering and the challenges they’ve
faced in their academic programs. They spoke about the importance of determination, focus, and hard work. FIU professors shared advice about preparing for engineering studies, emphasizing the need to develop problem-solving skills, curiosity, and resilience. Their presence provided students with a glimpse into the college experience and an understanding of the steps needed to pursue an engineering degree.
The engineers also highlighted the importance of diversity in engineering. Many spoke about overcoming challenges in environments where women are underrepresented, sharing personal stories of perseverance and the importance of believing in oneself. These stories resonated with the young audience, especially with the girls, who were encouraged to see themselves as future engineers. The speakers stressed the need for a variety of perspectives in engineering and explained how including more women in STEM fields contributes to innovative, inclusive problem-solving.
The event closed with a message of empowerment, urging all students to believe that they, too, can pursue engineering if they have passion and dedication. The panelists inspired students to dream big, work hard, and stay curious about the world around them. By exposing young students to role models in engineering, Mirror Lake took a significant step in fostering a love for STEM and in helping to close the gender gap in these fields.
International Day of the Girl at Mirror Lake Elementary Magnet School was more than just a one-day event; it was a powerful movement to ignite passion for engineering and open doors to possibilities for every student.

For more than 20 years, American Sign Language (ASL) students at South Plantation High have provided a “Signing Santa” to meet with deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) children so they can tell Santa their wishes for the coming season. The 2024 event took place on December 9, when Paladin grad (2002) Jeff West was this year’s “Signing Santa”, The event was held at the City of Plantation Fire Department’s Administrative building. Students and staff from Tropical Elementary school, Peters Elementary school, and Seminole Middle school in all located in Plantation, participated.
Jeff West is now a teacher at South Plantation high school who explained that “Deaf students often experience isolation around the holidays since most deaf children are born to non-deaf parents who have little to no sign language access in their homes. Often, when parents of deaf children, take their child to see Santa, they simply take a picture and move on.”
Mr. West added that his first visit to a Signing Santa as a child was a defining moment because the two could actually communicate with each other. “I could tell him
that I was a good boy and what I wanted for Christmas, because he could understand me. I felt welcomed and included. That’s why I have continued the tradition of playing the Signing Santa because of it’s importance to the DHH community”.
The Paladin Student Government and American Sign Language (ASL) students decorated the room, played games with the younger students and photographed each child as each they signed their holiday wishes with Santa. “They now have more than a ‘cute picture’ of a non-experience,” West said. “Seeing their eyes light up when Santa signed ‘Merry Christmas, and asked Have you been good this year?’ is the best feeling in the world.”
The day ended with a pizza lunch provided by the Kiwanis Club of Plantation. Happily, the children returned to their schools each with a photo of their experience and visit with Santa.
South Plantation High School is located at 1300 SW 54th Avenue, Plantation 33317 and can be reached at (754) 323-1950.
OnNovember 12, 2024, Mirror Lake Elementary School in Plantation, hosted its Annual STEAM Night, an eagerly anticipated event celebrating science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM). The school transformed into a buzzing center of exploration and innovation as students, teachers, and families gathered to experience engaging hands-on activities and interactive exhibits. The evening showcased Mirror Lake Elementary’s dedication to dynamic, experiential learning, offering students a chance to engage in creative problem-solving while making memorable discoveries.
The event was a true community collaboration, bringing together teachers and students from Mirror Lake Elementary, Plantation Middle School, and Plantation High School that, together they lead the activities and demonstrations. These stations featured a wide variety of hands-on activities: rocket launchers, fashion designers, and hoop gliders. Students of all ages were encouraged to get involved and explore, that fostered an environment where they could learn via an interactive experience.
A special addition to this year’s event was the presence of Florida International University (FIU), which partnered with Mirror Lake Elementary to provide lab sessions that brought a collegiate level of experimentation to the evening. FIU faculty and students led stations such as, “Rocket Racers,” “Planet Plankton,” and “Aquatic Ecology” giving younger students the chance to experience lab activities they might not usually encounter in elementary school. These sessions gave students a glimpse into the world of higher education and the possibilities that lie ahead.
Parents were thrilled to see their children so immersed in learning and praised the event for its hands-on approach. “The entire event was magical,” one parent stated to the administration. “It’s wonderful to see them so engaged,” said another parent. “They’re learning so much, and
it doesn’t feel like homework or class—it’s fun!” Teachers and administration echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of curiosity-driven learning and the impact of STEAM education on critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Mirror Lake Elementary’s Annual STEAM Night provided a vibrant, collaborative environment where students could explore new interests and develop skills that will serve them well in the future. By partnering with local schools and FIU, Mirror Lake Elementary demonstrated a commitment to broadening students’ horizons and creating meaningful learning experiences. The event was more than a celebration of STEAM—it was a testament to the power of community in fostering a love of learning and exploration. Students, families, and teachers left the event inspired, excited to continue their STEAM journeys both in and out of the classroom.
