SPORTS AND ACTIVITIES
DIRECTORY WESTON (954) 993-0144 Office
620 Carrington Dr. Weston, FL 33326 www.sportsandactivities.com
As we approach this season of gratitude, it’s a perfect time to pause and reflect on all that brings us together. Thanksgiving reminds us to practice kindness, not only to others but also to ourselves. This is a season of generosity, and I encourage each of us to reach out to those in need, whether by volunteering, lending a helping hand, or donating to wonderful causes like Harvest Drive Inc., which brings food and support to families in our community.
The holidays are a time to celebrate, and in this issue, we highlight the incredible events and traditions that make this season so meaningful. Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Diwali, or another cherished cultural festivity, we hope you find joy and connection in the gatherings, music, and traditions that fill this season with warmth. The Latino community, celebrate Noche de Velitas and the sounds of Gaitas, traditions that light up the season with beauty and togetherness see on page 18.
Winter activities, whether you’re a sports fan of soccer, lacrosse, softball, rugby, football or tack, now is the time to register for this season’s sports or try something new. We encourage you to embrace the winter activities to uplift your spirits and create lasting memories.
We’re also excited to share some of the season’s biggest events, from the Rotary Run for Tomorrow and Commission Cup Family Walk to outdoor concerts by the City of Weston that bring music to our hearts. Whether you’re out exploring these winter activities or welcoming family and friends into your home, may this season be filled with moments that bring you closer to loved ones.
As we look to the new year, we feel a sense of renewal and hope for fresh beginnings. We are so grateful to you, our readers, for your continued support and readership, which inspire us every day to bring you resources to stay active, healthy, and connected.
Wishing you and your family a bright, healthy, and joy-filled holiday season, and a wonderful start to the new year!
Warm regards,
Isabel Magette Publisher
As we approach the festive season, I want to extend my warmest wishes to all of you for a joyful and peaceful holiday. Whether you’re celebrating Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, or simply enjoying the beauty of this time of year, I hope it’s filled with cherished moments with family and friends.
In the coming months, Weston has an exciting array of events planned for the entire community to enjoy. From our Veterans Day Salute to Weston Nights Concerts, Movies in the Park, and the 27th Annual Rotary Run for Tomorrow with the Commission Cup Challenge, to Foreign Films and our annual Winter Safety Expo, there are so many opportunities for everyone to come together and celebrate the season.

Please remember to drive safely, be aware of your surroundings while shopping, and ensure your homes and vehicles are secure. Keep packages out of view in vehicles and if having packages delivered, set up tracking alerts and consider a secure delivery location instead of your home if you are not there to accept them. A few precautions can go a long way in ensuring we all have a happy and safe holiday season.
On behalf of the City of Weston, I wish you all a wonderful holiday season and a prosperous New Year. We look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events and working together to make 2025 a year filled with health, happiness, and continued community spirit.

Empowering Students: In the vibrant community of Weston, Cypress Bay High School is spearheading a visionary project that redefines the school’s approach to fashion and youth empowerment. Known as the “Cypress Bay Boutique,” this initiative aims to provide students with access to appropriate clothing for interviews and special events—such as Homecoming and Prom—while fostering financial awareness and a culture of recycling among peers.
Official Opening: On November 6, 2024, at 10:30 a.m., the Cypress Bay Boutique was formally inaugurated. Following words of gratitude from senior student Ana Sofía Moreno, who proposed and leads the project, the ribbon-cutting ceremony was conducted by Dr. Kassandra Fried, Principal of Cypress Bay High School; Dr. Kristina Taylor, Director of the College and Career Center; Ms. Jacqueline Gillman, President of the Rotary Club of Weston; and Ana Sofía Moreno, Senior Class 2025 Student.
Sustainable Fashion as a Source of Empowerment: The primary objective of the boutique is to provide access to suitable attire, thereby boosting the confidence and academic success of students. Beyond simply offering clothing, the Cypress Bay Boutique emphasizes the importance of recycling and financial education. The premise is straightforward: all students, regardless of economic background, should have access to quality clothing that makes them feel confident and proud.
A Network of Collaboration: Inspired by the need expressed by Dr. Kristina Taylor of the College and Career Center, and with the support of the Rotary Club of Weston, Ana Sofía a senior student proposed a solution that became the Cypress Bay Boutique. The success of this initiative results from collaboration among various community members. From the initial collection of clothing and shoes to the careful organization of the boutique space, Ana Sofía has relied on key allies such as Dr. Kristina Taylor and Mrs. Tamara Labossiere from the College and Career Center at Cypress Bay High School. Together, they tackle challenges
with determination to ensure every student feels valued. The Rotary Club of Weston has been instrumental in bringing this project to life, along with the active participation of parents, students, and community members.
Preparing for Impact: The project began in January 2024. From then until October 2024, students had access to clothing and shoes in the College and Career Center, serving as a pilot phase for the official opening of the Cypress Bay Boutique on November 6, 2024. This opening marks the start of a significant change, with racks of clothing and shoes now available in a dedicated classroom, creating a welcoming space where all students can find what they need. Looking ahead, workshops on etiquette and appropriate attire for interviews and formal events are planned. Additionally, Ana Sofía envisions expanding this impactful model to other schools across Broward County, a process already underway with the support of the Rotary Club of Weston. The initiative has even drawn the attention of the Rotary Club in Uruguay, which is working to replicate it there.
A Future of Confidence and Opportunity: The Cypress Bay Boutique stands as a beacon of possibility, reminding students that success is within reach regardless of their background. By offering a resource for appropriate attire and promoting sustainable habits, this initiative empowers students not only to face important milestones with confidence but also to embrace values of responsibility and resilience. Thanks to the support of dedicated community members, families, and partners like the Rotary Club of Weston, the boutique is more than a place to find clothing—it’s a foundation for building a future where each student feels prepared, valued, and inspired to make a difference. Through this project, Cypress Bay High School is not just dressing students for success; it is equipping them to lead with purpose and pride, ready to shape a brighter tomorrow.

Furthermore, our brand new newsroom is designed to cultivate communication skills and creativity among students. The weekly news program is empowering students to explore journalism, enabling them to report on school events and engage with the broader community.
In addition to these advancements, Imagine Weston is pleased to announce an array of new and improved electives for Middle School students. These electives have been carefully curated to align with students’ diverse interests, fostering personal growth and encouraging exploration in various disciplines. New courses include Oceanography, Sports Management, Home Economics, and Broadcast Journalism.
In a significant milestone for the institution, Imagine Weston has been designated as a “School of Excellence.” This prestigious recognition is awarded to educational

At Sagemont Preparatory School, we foster a dynamic and supportive learning environment that empowers students from preschool through 12th grade. Our curriculum is tailored to equip them with the skills and knowledge needed to tackle complex challenges confidently.
Preparing for the Future
Scientific inquiry is a core component of our educational approach, starting with our preschool and pre-kindergarten students. Through our Links to Learning curriculum, we harness young learners’ natural readiness to explore. Our engaging standards-based science curriculum features hands-on science and technology activities, ensuring a fun yet rigorous introduction to scientific concepts.
As students progress to kindergarten through 5th grade, we implement the STEMscopes curriculum, which emphasizes inquiry-based and student-centered learning. Aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards, STEMscopes ignites curiosity and foster authentic scientific practices. By following the 5E model—Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate—our elementary students actively engage in scientific inquiry, developing critical thinking and data analysis skills.
In middle and high school, the Sagemont Prep science programs deepen students’ understanding of scientific concepts. Collaborative learning and ownership of the educational process are central to our approach. In environmental science, for instance, students redesign sustainable cities, applying classroom knowledge to real-world challenges. AP Psychology students explore the brains of celebrities and fictional characters, merging scientific analysis with cultural studies.
Our commitment to experiential learning shines through in projects like paper chromatography, where students separate ink components from markers. This handson laboratory exercise teaches students about intermolecular attractions and polarity
while showcasing practical applications of chromatography in forensics, environmental monitoring, pharmaceuticals, food safety, and cosmetics. By calculating Rf values and analyzing fluorescent pigments under UV light, students connect their findings to real-world contexts, enhancing their understanding of scientific processes. Sagemont Prep educators equip students with the skills and technologies they will encounter in higher education, collaborating with local colleges to integrate advanced tools such as Vernier probes for real-time data collection.
At Sagemont Prep, we nurture inquisitive minds through rigorous scientific exploration and real-world applications. Our dedicated faculty members are committed to each student’s growth, ensuring they are well-prepared to face future challenges in the sciences. By instilling a passion for inquiry and critical thinking, we empower our students to become the innovative thinkers and problem-solvers of tomorrow, ready to tackle the complexities of the world ahead.
Gator Run Elementary is a true melting pot of diverse cultures and languages that blend to form what we call “Gator Culture.” Our ESOL (English Speakers of Other Languages) department comprises of two paraprofessionals – Ms. Andrea and Ms. Erica who meet the academic needs of our English Language Learners (ELL’s) in Spanish and Portuguese. Our ESOL Specialist, Mrs. Figueredo works attentively to ensure that our ESOL students and families feel welcome and comfortable to assimilate to their new school and environment. At Gator Run, we host ‘ESOL Information Nights’ for parents, ‘ESOL Family Game Nights’, and are continuously working together to ensure that we are welcoming all our newcomers.
We strive to provide a welcoming environment and offer pushin and pull-out services for our ESOL students. By working in a small group setting with our ELL’s, we are cultivating relationships among students and teaching language skills across all curriculum subjects. The ESOL department at Gator Run makes English
learning personal by integrating meaningful activities and using technology to encourage the English language inside and outside of the classroom.
Dictionary lessons are a big part of ensuring that each English Language Learner understands the importance of properly using their dictionary in day-to-day learning and during testing. A dictionary that lists words in both English and the student’s native language is one of the most helpful accommodations for ELL students. These quarterly lessons are fun, meaningful, and vital to academic success.
Our goal at Gator Run Elementary for our ELL’s is to welcome all students with open arms and ensure that we are providing the tools necessary to make newcomer families feel comfortable and as close to home as possible.

We are Anum Kupilik and Monica Said, and we are thrilled to be a part of the Manatee Bay Elementary Family. As School Counselors, our primary mission is to support students academically, emotionally and socially. We believe that our role goes beyond addressing individual challenges; it’s about promoting character, building relationships, and creating an inclusive school environment where every student can thrive.
One of the main areas we’re passionate about is character education. We’ve seen firsthand how teaching children values like respect, responsibility, kindness, and empathy shapes not only their behavior but their future. We want our students to be more than just successful in academics—we want them to be kind, thoughtful individuals who make positive contributions to their communities. We aim to make character education a core part of the school culture.
Alongside character education, we offer individual and group counseling to meet students’ needs. Sometimes, a child needs a little extra support to navigate life’s challenges, and we’re here to listen. Whether they’re experiencing academic stress, family changes, or peer conflicts, our goal is to provide a safe, nonjudgmental space for them to share their feelings. We also run small groups focused on social skills, self-confidence, and conflict resolution. These groups are a great way for students to learn from each other, build friendships, and develop practical tools they can use in everyday situations.
In addition to direct support, we also play a role in celebrating student success. Coordinating the celebration of quarterly Honor Roll with school staff and Student of the Month with our PTA allows us to highlight the achievements of students who work hard academically
or display exceptional character. We feel that recognizing these efforts not only motivates the students to be honored but also encourages their peers to strive for excellence in their own unique ways. We love seeing how proud students are when they receive recognition—it’s a special moment for both them and their families. We also find it vital to acknowledge our colleagues through our Staff of Character initiative that spotlights faculty and staff every month who exemplify the same character traits we are instilling in our students.
Another aspect of our role that we are particularly excited about is leading the school’s community service and outreach efforts. Organizing the Harvest Drive food collection is a powerful way to bring the school community together while teaching students the importance of generosity and empathy. With the Manatee Bay Elementary Student Council, we also coordinate the school’s toy drive during the holiday season, ensuring that every child in our community can experience the joy of giving and helping others during this special time of year. We look forward to organizing future outreach programs later this school year.
As School Counselors, our goal is to foster a school environment where students feel safe, valued, and supported. Through character education, individual and small group counseling, student recognition, and community service initiatives, we hope to make a meaningful impact on the lives of the students we work with. We’re excited to be here in Weston at Manatee Bay Elementary and look forward to building relationships with students, staff, and families in the years to come!

KUMON
Weston-Saddle Club Road. Kumon is the best learning program ever developed, and very different from your child’s regular school experience because of 4 pillars that guide us with each student: 1. individually designed learning; 2. learning challenges that advance exactly in line with your student’s timing; 3. learning by doing, not listening; 4. instructors who support, students who think. Consider how different these pillars are from the passive experience your child has in a class of 30 students. Your child’s special gifts and talents, and even your child’s individual needs, can get lost in a class of 30. But not at Kumon!! That’s why Kumon is cherished in almost 60 countries. And why it consistently generates accelerated learning for students from any starting point, to beyond class-level! The Kumon Math Program is a comprehensive curriculum that develops the necessary skills to help children progress from counting through calculus. The Kumon Reading Program begins with basic phonics and progresses all the way through advanced reading comprehension. Please stop by and visit us! Schedule a free, no-obligation evaluation. Language learning is a tool of non-stop self-improvement and growth. Learning a new language not only opens opportunities for communication and cultural exploration but also enhances cognitive abilities, emotional intelligence, and overall personal growth. Here are main ways in which language learning contributes to selfimprovement:
BOOSTING COGNITIVE FUNCTION
• Improves Memory and Brain Function: Studies show that bilinguals have better working memory, which is important for problem-solving and reasoning.
• Enhances Critical Thinking: Language learners are constantly adapting to new structures, patterns, and rules, which sharpens your analytical and critical thinking skills.
• Increases Mental Flexibility: Switching between languages makes your brain more agile, helping you become more adaptable and flexible in other areas of life.
FOSTERING EMOTIONAL GROWTH
• Building Confidence: Mastering a new language takes practice, persistence, and patience. As you progress, you gain confidence not just in language use but in your ability to overcome new challenges.
• Empathy and Cultural Understanding: Learning a language often involves exposure to different cultures and ways of thinking. This broadens your worldview and can make you more empathetic and open-minded, improving your interpersonal skills.
• Overcoming Fear and Resilience: Many language learners experience initial embarrassment or fear when speaking a new language. Overcoming this fear builds resilience, teaching you to take risks, learn from mistakes, and persist despite challenges.
INCREASING SELF-DISCIPLINE AND FOCUS
• Setting and Achieving Goals: Learning a new language requires setting goals, tracking progress, and committing to regular practice.
• Time Management: Language learning often requires consistent daily practice. This teaches you how to prioritize and make time for things that matter, which is applicable to other areas of life, such as school assignments, fitness, work, or personal development.
The combination of self-improvement strategies with language learning definitively leads to success. Many self-improvement techniques such as mindfulness, journaling, or reading self-help books can complement your language learning journey. By focusing on language learning as a part of your personal growth journey, all age students will find that the two reinforce each other in meaningful ways, creating a path for both intellectual and personal transformation!
