Dear Readers:

Happy Holidays! I can’t believe another holiday season is already upon us. Family life keeps us so busy that the time just seems to fly by. I hope that you have a chance to stop and enjoy all that this holiday season has to offer, whether it be spending much needed time together as a family, visiting with extended family out of town or just being present and in the moment to take it all in.

Sports & Activities Directory Central Broward is also celebrating this holiday season. The fall issue just marked Central Broward Directory’s second anniversary! We are very proud to be able to publish all the sports, activities, programs and events that Cooper City, Davie & Plantation have to offer. The winter season is my favorite time of year in South Florida. The weather is perfect and it’s a beautiful time to be outside. Check out our Calendar in the Events Section (green tab) for all the fun holiday-themed events our wonderful cities have lined up for you to enjoy. As we head into the new year, it’s a great time to go outdoors to try a new sport, visit local attractions, attend local events or just enjoy the time together outside as a family.

In honor of Veterans Day this November, let’s remember to thank all the veterans in our communities for their service in protecting our freedom. November is also the time to register for the upcoming winter & spring sports’ seasons. All the registration periods can be found in the Main Directory (red tab) of the magazine including baseball, basketball, flag football, soccer, softball and more. Broward County Public Schools will be closed for Thanksgiving Break the week of November 25 - 29, and Winter Break begins on Monday, December 23 - Monday, January 6. Registration is open now for camps, programs, and activities taking place during these weeks to keep your child active and engaged. In addition, enrichment programs and activities are ongoing and include dance, gymnastics, martial arts, golf and tennis, most of which offer school days off and week-long camps, too!

I’d like to thank this issue’s presenter, The Ah-Tah-Ti-Ki Museum that is celebrating Native American Heritage Month this November. The museum is located in Clewiston, just a short ride outside of Broward County, and is home to over 200,000 works of art & historic objects. It’s a great place to learn about the Seminole people & their historic ties to Florida on the Big Cypress Reservation. I want to wish you and your family the very best this holiday season. Cheers to a happy, healthy new year!

My Best to you!

Dear Cooper City Residents,

As we approach the end of 2024, I am once again reminded of how fortunate we are to be a part of this wonderful community we call “Someplace Special.” Throughout this year, we have continued to welcome new residents who are quickly becoming part of the fabric of Cooper City, enhancing the rich sense of community that makes our hometown so unique.

Over the past year, your City Commission has worked diligently to finalize a budget that not only strengthens the services we provide but also lowers the operating millage rate to 5.855, the lowest for our residents since 2011. With this commitment to fiscal responsibility, we have been able to move forward on several important projects that contribute to the overall well-being and safety of our community.

In our ongoing efforts to enhance our recreational spaces, the pickleball courts at the Suellen H. Fardelmann Sports Complex were recently resurfaced. Additionally, the Pool and Tennis Center received a brand-new awning, improving the facility’s comfort and usability. We are also addressing traffic congestion near Griffin Elementary School by developing a plan to improve traffic flow within the school’s property, helping to reduce the impact on neighboring residents.

Furthermore, we have renewed our efforts to conduct an effective tree-trimming project throughout Cooper City. Crews have made their ways along SW 52 Street, SW 90 Avenue and SW 118 Avenue, with more arterial roadways to come. Our Utilities Department is overseeing a capital improvement project within the Flamingo Townhomes, where aging water service lines are being replaced to prevent future leaks and pipe breaks. These are just a few of the efforts we are making to ensure Cooper City remains a safe and beautiful place for everyone.

Perhaps most exciting is the development of a Parks and Recreation Master Plan, which will help us map out the future of our parks, programs, and facilities. In October, we kicked off the plan’s development with a public workshop at the Community Center. There will be additional opportunities for residents to weigh in on the plan, so please make sure to visit www.CooperCity.gov/Calendar to stay aware of upcoming meetings and workshops. Together, we can shape the future of parks, recreational facilities, playgrounds, and walking trails, making sure they continue to meet and exceed the needs of our community.

In addition to these ongoing projects, we have some wonderful holiday events lined up that I encourage everyone to attend. Our annual “Light Up Cooper City” event will take place on Friday, December 6 at Memorial Park. This cherished tradition brings together families and friends to celebrate the season with dazzling lights, festive performances, and community cheer. Later in the month, on December 13, our youngest residents will have the chance to meet Santa at “Cookies and Cocoa with Santa” at the Community Center—a perfect way to celebrate the holiday spirit. As we close out the year, we will come together once again for our “Menorah Lighting” on December 30 to mark the Hanukkah season at Memorial Park.

We have also enjoyed many fun and engaging events throughout the year. A special shoutout to volunteers and Parks and Recreation staff who helped make our inaugural Mayor’s Chess Tournament an astounding success. It brought together about 80 participants for a day of friendly competition and strategic thinking. It is these types of activities that truly showcase the spirit of Cooper City.

As I write this message, my final one as your Mayor, I am filled with gratitude and pride. Serving the people of Cooper City for the past 12 years has been the honor of a lifetime. Together, we have accomplished so much, and I truly believe that I am leaving Cooper City in a better place than when I first began my service. Thank you for your trust, your support, and your unwavering commitment to our community. Cooper City will always be “Someplace Special,” and I will always be proud to have played a role in its growth and success.

Sincerely,

Hello Davie Residents,

I hope that all our students are having an exciting and rewarding school year so far. We all appreciate our Davie teachers’ efforts that ensure our students’ academic endeavors are off to an excellent beginning.

I can’t believe that the holidays are right around the corner again! The Town of Davie Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department has a wide variety of programs, activities, and community events for both our Davie residents and visitors to enjoy. Military veterans of the United States Armed Forces will be honored at the Town of Davie’s annual Veterans Day Ceremony which takes place at Veterans Park on Monday, November 11 at 10:00AM. Since parking is limited at Veterans Park, the Town will provide shuttle service to and from the Davie Arena at the Bergeron Rodeo Grounds. We are excited to announce that the Movie is the Park series will also return this year to Bamford Sports Complex on November 15 (Wonka) and December 13 (The Grinch.) Showtime starts at 7:00PM, so bring your entire family to enjoy a night out at the park. To get a jump start on your holiday shopping, join us at The Town’s annual Holiday Craft Show that will take place on November 23 & 24 inside the Davie Arena with over 100 local arts and crafts vendors. Admission is free and local entertainment will be live on stage throughout both days for you to enjoy. On Saturday, December 7, Town council members, the Vice-Mayor, and I “flip the switch” during our annual Holiday Lighting of the Greens Event at Bamford Sports Complex. Come join us for a night of fun including a lighted horse parade, youth activities and games, and live performances on our entertainment stage. A wide variety of year-round recreational programming is also offered in the Town of Davie, that promotes active lifestyles and the opportunity to learn new life skills. I’d like to take a moment to highlight a few of our fitness program offerings this season. Invest in your well-being and become a member of the Pine Island Fitness and Aquatic Center. Membership includes the use of the Olympic-sized swimming pool, as well as, our state-of-the-art fitness equipment including elliptical machines, stationary bikes, strength training equipment and treadmills. Members have priority lane reservations at the Pine Island swimming pool. The Davie Swimfast Swim team also practices at the pool and provides expert instruction for young swimmers ages six and up. The coaching staff, headed by Pete Hay, one of best-known names in the world of swimming, offers various levels of classes to help keep our Davie youth active. In addition, Deep Water Fitness provides group classes that focus on cardiovascular, strength and flexibility training for adults of all ages. The instructor, Nancy Olson, uses a wide variety of fitness formats such as high intensity interval training, circuit training, and mind-body formats for a complete workout.

When looking through our activities, remember whether its community special events, swimming, fitness, youth sports, or recreation classes for all ages, the Town of Davie Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department has something to offer everyone in your family. For more information about any Davie program, call (954) 327-3941. You will find all our classes and programs on our website at www.davie-fl.gov.

As always, see you in the parks!

Sincerely,

Greetings Plantation Residents:

By this time of year, parents have their routines down: Take the children to school, enjoy watching football on weekends and look to the city for interesting activities.

I’ll help with the third one of those.

We try to balance out options to cover all residents’ tastes. Some like to work up a sweat and compete for every point. Others want to take a deep breath, or better yet, just spectate. And then there are families: We look to provide options from almost the moment a child is born until they head off to college.

I’ve lived in Plantation for more than 30 years now, and here are some of my favorites in the coming months:

Cooler weather means the return of the Rock the Park series. This year is the sixth go-round for our popular concerts, and the changes we embarked on last year proved popular with residents. Pine Island Park has been well-received with expansive parking and a new spacious artificial turf field. We’ll have four Friday night concerts and three on Saturday. You can find the schedule and our exciting lineup at www.plantation.org. Join me at It’s a Wonderful Life in Plantation Holiday Parade at 9:00AM. Saturday, November 23. (Thanksgiving is late this year, November 28.) The parade steps off at Broward Boulevard and NW 46th Avenue and continues all the way to City Hall. Watch City Councilmembers and I flip the switch to Light up City Hall for the holidays on December 7. Santa will be there for photos along with local student choirs, craft vendors, arts & crafts and food trucks.

Plantation on Christmas Eve means … Santa’s Visit!! Listen for the sirens as Santa makes his way through the city visiting every street in Plantation. f you are interested in volunteering for this program, please email plantationparks@plantation.org.

Two other notes: We have relaxed our rules against dogs in city parks. We now allow dogs, on a six-foot leash, in our passive parks. Central Park and Pine Island, for example, still are to remain dog-less because there are so many youth sports going on. Also, a recent survey has shown that more than 85 percent of you are “very satisfied” or “satisfied” with the quality of parks. See the whole survey at Plantation.org/Survey.

We have many exciting things happening in the city and I’d love to hear from you. Feel free to email me at Mayor@Plantation.org. I’m looking forward to seeing you around town this winter.

Happy Holidays!

In a world that often seems cold and indifferent, there is an opportunity for us to make a difference. While many may be aware of the foster care system, few truly understand the state mandated licensing process and vital role of foster parents. Foster parents are an integral part of healing childhood trauma and maintaining a child’s connection with their biological family. Foster care agencies offer a chance to be that change, an opportunity to receive the DCF required trainings and ongoing support once children are placed in your home. Foster care, by its very nature, seeks to provide stability, support and love to children who have faced adversities at no fault of their own. As a potential foster parent, you are uniquely positioned to offer a safe, stable environment to a child, 0-17 years old, who has experienced the traumas of separation from their biological families. Foster care agencies provide ongoing support and oversight to their licensed foster parents.

The decision to become a foster parent should not be taken lightly. It’s a calling that requires selflessness, patience, compassion, and an unwavering commitment from day one of training and extended to the day a child arrives to your home until the day the court determines the child will leave your home. Foster care agencies recognize this endeavor is not without challenges. The children in need of care often have complex trauma which shows itself as emotional and behavioral issues. These behaviors are an

expression of an unmet need. Foster care agencies have individuals working as part of the professional team that provide added support and oversight to all foster families and the child(ren) in their home. The foster parent training classes are “What to Expect when you’re Expecting a Foster Child”. Foster care agencies provide trainings and home inspections. They can answer any questions or concerns as they arise.

The statistics surrounding the foster care system can be overwhelming. According to the Children’s Bureau, on any given day, there are nearly 440,000 children in foster care in the United States. This boils down to over 1,800 children in Broward County alone. A child protective investigator may decide to remove a child from their caregivers if they have experienced some form of abuse, abandonment, or neglect. Their lives are instantly marked by instability and uncertainty. You have the power to change this narrative. By becoming a foster parent, you offer a child a sense of comfort, a consistent daily routine, and an opportunity to heal and grow. It is a chance to nurture their resilience in the face of adversity. The impact of a foster parent extends beyond the individual child. Your efforts can lead to a brighter future for the children you welcome into your home. Your decision to become a foster parent can be the turning point in a child’s life.

In today’s digital age, managing screen time is a challenge for many parents. With the integration of technology in classrooms, parents feel uncertain about how to set boundaries without hindering their child’s learning. Research shows that excessive screen use exacerbates ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) symptoms such as inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity, making it essential to find a healthy balance.

Understanding ADHD and its Impact: ADHD, as defined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder marked by persistent patterns of inattention, hyperactivity, impulsivity, and difficulties with self-regulation and executive functioning. One such factor is excessive screen time, which can act as a powerful trigger for children already grappling with focus and impulse control issues. For these children, prolonged exposure to screens not only amplifies struggles with attention but also exacerbates difficulties in completing tasks and maintaining daily routines.

Screen devices (smartphones, tablets, gaming consoles) have become integral to many children’s lives. For children with ADHD, these devices can disrupt critical aspects of their development, affecting not just the ability to focus but also emotional regulation & sleep patterns, difficulty following directions, staying organized, and completing tasks at home and school. As they become absorbed in screen activities, these children often experience heightened impulsivity, which can lead to behavioral issues such as emotional outbursts and frustration when they are asked to disconnect from their devices.

Excessive screen use, particularly before bedtime, negatively impacts sleep. Poor sleep is a common issue among children with ADHD, and it can further exacerbate symptoms. Sleep is critical for cognitive function, emotional regulation, and overall well-being.

Recommendations & Practical Strategies for Parents

1. Limit Device Time in Short Increments: Allow 30 minutes screen time per specific activity, followed by a break for physical activity or a non-digital game. This structured approach can help children with ADHD manage their impulses and prevent overstimulation.

2. Remove Devices Two Hours Before Bedtime: Implementing a “no devices” rule at least two hours before bedtime can significantly improve your child’s sleep quality. The absence of screen stimulation allows for melatonin production to normalize, facilitating better sleep. Encouraging other relaxing pre-bedtime routines, such as reading or listening to calming music, can also promote healthier sleep habits.

3. Set Clear Rules and Boundaries: Be consistent in setting rules about when and where screen devices can be used. For example, keeping devices out of the bedroom and designating certain times of the day for screen use can create a predictable routine for your child. Clear boundaries help children with ADHD understand what is expected and reduce conflict.

4. Encourage Alternative Activities: Introduce hobbies like sports, music, arts and crafts, or outdoor exploration to engage your child’s mind and nurture their creativity. Physical activities are especially beneficial for children with ADHD, as they help burn off excess energy and enhance focus.

5. Increase Parent-Child Interaction: Engaging in non-digital activities, such as board games, outdoor play, or cooking together, is a powerful way to improve your child’s emotional regulation and decision-making skills. These family bonding experiences help children develop social skills and self-esteem. Additionally, by modeling healthy screen habits like “no screens during dinner,” parents emphasize the importance of face-to-face interactions, encouraging meaningful conversations, strengthening family connections, enhancing their communication skills and emotional awareness. By actively setting clear boundaries and demonstrating mindful screen habits, parents can empower their children to manage ADHD symptoms more effectively, allowing them to reach their full potential both academically and emotionally. Mirror Lake Elementary Magnet School, located in Plantation, Florida, has long been a beacon of academic excellence and community engagement. Our school is proud to provide students with diverse opportunities to grow both intellectually and as responsible citizens. Two recent events highlight our commitment to developing young leaders: the induction of our National Elementary Honor Society (NEHS) students and the inauguration of our Student Government.

National Elementary Honor Society Induction: Building Future Leaders: On September 10th, Mirror Lake Elementary celebrated the induction of our National Elementary Honor Society (NEHS) members. These exceptional 4th and 5th graders have demonstrated excellence in both academics and behavior. Parents were invited to share in the special occasion, presenting their children with a sash during the ceremony—a moment of immense pride for both students and their families.

NEHS emphasizes more than just academic achievement; it focuses on building well-rounded leaders who are ready to contribute to their communities. The four pillars of NEHS—leadership, responsibility, scholarship, and service—were discussed at the induction ceremony, with each pillar underscoring a key value that these students will embody in their everyday lives. This year, our NEHS members will embark on several community projects. Whether through organizing charitable drives or supporting local causes, these students are set to make a lasting positive impact.

Student Government: Engaging Students in Civic Leadership: Another cornerstone of our leadership development at Mirror Lake is our active Student

Government, which held its inauguration recently. The structure of the Mirror Lake Student Government mirrors that of the City of Plantation, teaching students about civic leadership and the importance of governance in a democracy. Our student leaders are composed of a Mayor, Vice Mayor, Councilmembers, and Class Representatives. The inauguration was attended by actual City of Plantation Councilmembers, adding an air of authenticity and importance to the ceremony. As a token of the close ties between the school and local government, the student leaders were invited to attend a City of Plantation Council Meeting. There, they proudly introduced themselves and led the assembly in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

This year, the Student Government has set goals aimed at serving both their peers and the community. Their primary mission is to represent the interests and concerns of the student body, acting as a bridge between students and school administration. Additionally, they are planning efforts to support families in need during the holiday season. Their initiatives include organizing a food and toy drive, ensuring that students and families within the community can experience the joy of the season, regardless of their circumstances.

A Magnet for Excellence: At Mirror Lake Elementary Magnet School, we strive to create a nurturing environment where students not only excel academically but also learn to become compassionate and active members of society. We are confident that these students will leave a lasting impact on our school and the community.

Mirror Lake Elementary is located at 1200 NW 72nd Avenue, Plantation 33313 and can be reached at (754) 322-7100.

Seminole Middle School strives to empower all students to achieve at their highest potential and to become productive members in their community. Seminole Middle School is located in the heart of Plantation. Known as a hidden gem, we are delighted to be considered the neighborhood school. Seminole Middle School has served a pivotal role in the community for years and currently serves 1,070 students. Our school consists of generations of families that continue to support us. A unique aspect of Seminole Middle School is that we are the home of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Special Programs for Broward County Schools.

At Seminole Middle, we embody a purpose to offer all students the highest educational experience through various academic programs. Our advanced and gifted students have the opportunity to be successful in our DECAL Program (Division of Enhanced Communication and Law). Students in 6th-8th grade who have earned a level 4 or 5 on the FAST may apply to be in the program from 6th grade. Students are expected to excel and work at a higher level than their peers, not in the DECAL. Once students enter 7th grade, they can enroll in high school courses. Classes are project based and very challenging. The rigor and standards in these courses prepare students to receive high school credit, ensuring that students have an easy transition of coursework in their prospective high schools.

In addition to DECAL, Seminole Middle School also offers a plethora of enrichment elective courses. These courses are based on academic standards and guidelines and are created to teach students real world skills. They also guide the students towards subject areas that may pique their interest and promote community involvement. The enrichment courses offered include Rockets, Riddles & Robots, Speech and Debate, Yearbook and Music Through the Ages, aside from the traditional electives such as PE, Art, Music, Drama and Band. Not to mention the various extracurricular sports and clubs of student interest. Seminole Middle has also implemented the Cambridge program. Although we are just beginnings, we look forward to increasing student opportunities.

Plantation Park Elementary (PPE) School would like to invite you to join us in honoring the life and legacy of an amazing staff member who was taken away too soon. Kent “Coach” Ottens passed away from heart failure on September 4th.

Coach Ottens was the PE Teacher at PPE for the past 27 years. He loved working with, and mentoring students, and taught generations of families who attended our school. He was known for organizing fun field day activities each year, playing a variety of sports with his students, and incorporating Spanish lessons into his daily warm-up routines. Some students say his Spanish lessons were some of their favorite things.

Students remember him as being funny and making them laugh. One student recalls, “He always made me laugh when I was running my laps. I would look back at him and he would be staring at us and then he would wink.”. Coach ensured that every student felt loved, valued, seen, and respected. He made sure every student knew he/she was an important member of their team.

Coach Ottens was a die-hard Miami Dolphins fan and was well known for saying, “Fins up!”. He loved all sports and would often explain to students that if they were not good at a particular sport, they just might find themself being great at another sport. A 5th grade student shared that he will always

Mirror Lake Elementary’s Family Fun Day was a fantastic event with a lot to offer! Their event was held on October 26th at the Plantation Community Center, providing a convenient and central location for the Mirror Lake family. Family Fun Day serves as the biggest fundraiser of the year for the school. This plays a crucial role in raising much needed funds to support various school activities and projects.

The focus was on the silent auction which featured over 100 items up for bid which provided a great way to engage attendees and encourage them to contribute to the fundraising effort. It also provided an opportunity for attendees to take home some valuable items. Some items that were offered up for bid were Miami Heat tickets, Universal Studio tickets, Miami Open tickets, and over 65 themed baskets. Each grade level was provided a theme for their auction basket and the students were involved in providing items to go inside.

Along with the silent auction there was food and beverages offered for sale that attendees can enjoy while participating in the event. The event also included a water splashpad and a beautiful playground designed to cater

remember that “Coach appreciated my sport [golf], which many people say is an old man’s sport.”.

Coach Ottens genuinely loved and cared about everyone. While working as our PE Coach, he also worked as an EMT. Coach worked in that capacity throughout the pandemic, never once thinking about his own health, but always willing to help those in need. He never complained nor did he look to be praised. His joy was simply in helping others.

Our parents loved receiving high-fives from Coach as he helped them to cross the drive-thru entrance into and from our school every morning and every afternoon. Students looked forward to going to their PE Specials class with Coach, even on cold, wet, and rainy days. Community members and parent volunteers looked forward to signing up to help him with our annual Field Day events.

Our school will never be the same without Coach Ottens. We are saddened by our loss, but we find some semblance of comfort in knowing that his memory will live on forever through his children, grandchildren, our PPE family, and the thousands of students whose lives he has touched over the years. Coach Ottens is gone, but his legacy will live on forever.

“We love and miss you, Coach. Fins up!”.

to a wide range of age groups, making it family friendly. All these activities were done in the presence of a DJ which added to the entertainment factor, creating a lively atmosphere for all to enjoy.

This event brought together the local community, students, staff, and their families. This fostered a sense of togetherness and community spirit, which is important for building strong relationships and a supportive school community.

Given the combination of a silent auction, food sales, and various activities, Family Fun Day raised a significant amount of money, which can be used to enhance the educational experience for Mirror Lake Elementary students.

Overall, Mirror Lake Elementary’s Family Fun Day appeared to be well-organized and an inclusive event that not only raised funds but also strengthened the bond with the school’s community. It was a great example of how this school engaged with their local communities for both financial support and building a sense of unity.
