I fully understand the challenges busy parents face as they navigate getting their children to and from sports and activities. This is one reason why parents in Weston value the City’s parks system. In Weston, a visit to the park provides an enjoyable experience for both parents and children. Last year, your City Commission adopted Weston’s first Parks & Recreation Master Plan. Staff is now busy implementing many of the capital improvements that the Plan outlines, all developed with input from residents, sports leagues, and community groups. TheGelato Festival World Masters, the premier competition celebrating the art of gelato-making, continues its global journey in search of the world’s best gelato artisans. With partners Carpigiani and Sigep – Italian Exhibition Group – the tournament’s fifth North American top of 2024 took place in Miami Lakes on December 10, hosted by Baluna, a Carpigiani distributor.

The event brought together 17 talented gelato chefs from across the region to compete in one of the sweetest and most anticipated culinary battles of the year. Emerging victorious in the main category was Carlotta Orrico of Delicious in Weston, who took home first place with her flavor, “Delizioso.”

The Winning Flavor: “Delizioso”

Carlotta’s winning creation, Delizioso, is a masterpiece that combines the tangy brightness of lemon gelato with the nostalgic flavors of Grandma’s Cake, topped off with a hint of indulgent white chocolate. This harmonious blend impressed the judges and secured her title as one of Florida’s best gelato artisans for 2024.

Criteria for Excellence

Participants were evaluated based on four key parameters:

1. Flavor – Highlighting the balance and intensity of the taste.

2. Structure – Focusing on the texture and consistency of the gelato.

3. Creativity – Showcasing the innovation and originality of the recipe.

4. Presentation – Judging the visual appeal of the final product.

The rigorous standards emphasize the importance of ingredient selection, craftsmanship, and visual impact, making Carlotta’s victory a testament to her exceptional talent and dedication.

A Path to the Semifinals

With this win, Carlotta Orrico and the other selected artisans will advance to the North America Semifinals of the Gelato Festival World Masters, scheduled for 2025. This step is a crucial milestone on the road to the global championship, where the best gelato artisans from around the world will compete for the title of World Master.

Ages 8 and up are invited to participate in our FREE Hands-only CPR training, which also includes how to use an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED), and bleeding control techniques in the event of an emergency. Hands-only CPR is a simplified form of CPR using only compressions and no breaths. Participants will receive instruction from BSO Fire Rescue. In just one hour you will learn life-saving instruction on CPR, how to operate an AED and Bleeding Control. Brain damage can occur in four minutes. Weston World Fest celebrates its tenth anniversary on Sunday, March 2, 2025 with more countries, food and entertainment than ever before. The event will be held on Sunday, March 2, 2025, noon to 4:00pm, at the Weston Regional Park event stage area.

Newly added countries for this year include Guatemala and Bangladesh, while this year’s Theme Village will showcase Scotland, New Zealand and the USA. This event is one of the largest in Weston, regularly drawing over 3,000 happy and enthusiastic attendees.

“Our amazing volunteer team in partnership with the City of Weston has made sure the 10th anniversary of the Fest is over the top,” notes Event Director and Founder Carol Lema. “We also have a special exhibit this year thanks to our friends at Young at Art which features the mouth-watering ice cream and candy art of renowned local artist Stan Slutsky. If you’ve never been, this is definitely the year to attend.”

Under the guidance of Country Booths Director, Carolina Herrera, the 20 participating countries and a passport program for kids will bring this year’s theme, “Patterns and Pastimes” (Hobbies), to life. Carolina shares, “Expect a vibrant celebration of diverse traditions and customs, where you’ll see firsthand the unique hobbies and patterns that define each country’s way of life. Entertainment Director Bhavana Jain notes, “I can promise you this year’s performances are going to be absolutely amazing! We are thrilled to bring back the vibrant Shimmy Connection, the captivating Ukrainian performers, and the powerful

beats of Ronin Taiko drummers. This year’s lineup will include Kelly Academy of Irish Dance, Nach Meri Jaan Indian Dance, Brazilian Voices, Bolivia Magica Ballet Folklorico and Venezuela Danza y Tambor.”

Restaurant co-directors Magida Arslan and Adam Goldstein share that there will be more food offerings than ever before, including booths and popup carts with international cuisine, specialties from the tropics, Boba Tea, and Guatemalan coffee. Meals, drinks and desserts are available for purchase.

A Theme Village under the direction of Carolina Gomez will bring additional country activities. Event Activity Stations including henna art, a Florida-themed photo booth, and a mini-rugby clinic will also be available. Raffle prizes for all ages round out the day’s offerings.

While the event always includes a curated selection of local nonprofit organizations, in recent years there has also been more inclusion of the deaf and hard of hearing community. “We are pleased to have not only the nonprofit organization CHC Hearing, but also a performance in sign language onstage by the Cypress Bay ASL Honors group,” notes Laura Dobrzanski, Arts Council President.

The 2024 season was a landmark year for the Weston Warriors, as both their Junior Varsity Cheerleading team and 14U Football team earned spots at the Pop Warner National Championships in December.

This remarkable achievement reflects the athletes’ dedication and hard work, led by Coaches Jehincy Castro (Cheer), Melissa Coehlo (Cheer Assistant), and Tommy Fleischhauer (Football), with assistants Sean Smith, Joe Fantigrassi, Steven Peterson, and Charlie Ashley. “These teams exemplify the

culture of our program—hard work, commitment, and success,” said League President John LoMonaco.

On January 25th, Imagine Weston hosted its annual Multicultural Family Event, an unforgettable celebration that highlighted the beauty of cultural diversity and unity within our school community. The event, which brought together families, students, and staff, was a powerful reminder of how cultural richness can shape a school’s spirit and strengthen the bonds among its members.

This year’s event showcased the traditions, customs, and unique heritage of over 20 countries. Imagine Weston scholars, alongside their dedicated teachers, presented vibrant and interactive projects, sharing their knowledge and love for the cultures they represent. From colorful displays of artwork to the energetic rhythms of international dances, every corner of the event was filled with pride and passion.

The event was attended by an impressive crowd of over 2,000 Imagine family members, all eager to learn about the diverse backgrounds that make up our school community. With the help of more than 70 high school volunteers and over 200 parent volunteers, the event ran smoothly and was a testament to the power of collaboration and teamwork. The Students Against Violence Everywhere (SAVE)

Promise Club is a youth leadership initiative of Sandy Hook Promise. Its mission is to empower young leaders to actively promote school safety and prevent various forms of violence in schools and communities.

At Country Isles Elementary, the SAVE Promise Club has made a meaningful impact through a variety of activities aimed at fostering a welcoming and supportive school environment. The students have collaborated with the therapy dog, Olivia, to brainstorm creative ways to make the school more inclusive and ensure every student feels valued.

The club has undertaken several impactful initiatives to foster a positive and supportive school environment. These include writing uplifting messages on sticky notes and placing them in classrooms to brighten their peers’ mornings, as well as creating heartfelt cards for students at a school affected by Hurricane Milton. Most recently, the club led the morning announcements, guiding the entire school through deep breathing exercises to promote calm and mindfulness among students and staff.
