Dear Readers,

10

November and the Thanksgiving holiday are a time of giving thanks. As Mayor, I have a lot to be thankful for. In 2018 alone, Weston was named by Money Magazine as one of its Best Places to Live in America; by Verizon Business as one of the Best Small Cities for Small Businesses; listed in Trip Advisor’s 16 Great Towns to Visit in 2018; and ranked in the Top 100 Safest Cities in the U.S. for 2018 by Neighborhood Scout at number eight. I am very thankful, and very proud. These recognitions are hard earned yet are not sought after. A city cannot apply to be selected as a Best Places to Live recipient. We are immensely proud of this recognition for our residents, our business leaders, our small business shops, our students and school administrators, our civic organizations, sports leagues, performing arts organizations, volunteers, and of course, our City staff that work so hard each day to make your day - a better day. This is not the first year of these recognitions and we envision not the last. Each year, being the community that Weston is, we step up and help those within our neighborhood with food insecurity by supporting Harvest Drive. Harvest Drive, initiated at County Isles Elementary School in Weston, is a fundraising and food gathering effort working with the Broward County Public School System and others to provide a complete Thanksgiving meal and a week’s worth of groceries and necessities to over 2,400 families across Broward County, including families here in Weston. We encourage you to do what you can, if you can, to help children help other children in need. The Community drop-off date at the Western High School mini-gym is Friday November 16, 2018 from 3PM – 10PM for non-perishable food donations. Please visit www.harvestdriveflorida.com for their most requested items. The City, in conjunction with the Arts Council of Greater Weston, offers an array of events for families through May 2019. These include monthly Moonlight Movies in the Park, magician and puppet shows at the Weston Community Center for children, Symphony of the Americas ‘Magico’ Visual Concerto and an outdoor pops concert, a Foreign Film Series, the free WestonNights Outdoor Concert series, the Winter Safety Expo, the Celebrate the Arts event, Weston World Fest, the Mayor’s Chess Challenge, the Royal Egg Hunt, and more. I also CHALLENGE every Weston elementary student to join me at the free Mayor’s Get Fit Challenge 1-Mile Health Walk on December 9th at Cypress Bay High School with a cash prize to the top three elementary schools in Weston with the most participation as a percentage of their enrollment. Please look for details of these and other events on our City website at Westonfl.org/Events. For the holidays, we stress vigilance to not leave valuables in sight in vehicles, and to always lock your car doors. Weston is a safe community, but whether you are running into the gym, dropping a child at day-care or at the gas station, remember to – Lock it, Don’t Lose it. And lastly, I wish to extend my thanks to Commissioner Toby Feuer who just completed her service to the City having served our community for the past eight years with energy, grace and distinction. Her dedication should be recognized. I THANK YOU for your public service. I, on behalf of the entire City Commission and staff, wish you and your families a safe, happy and healthy holiday season and New Year.

Until next time…

Mayor Daniel J. Stermer City of Weston

nspiration, dedication and motivation. These are the characteristics instilled and expected by South Florida Cloggers, Rebecca Vetter and Lora Kuehn. These two women are the heart and soul behind the South Florida Cloggers. Located in Davie, these professional dancers teach all types of dance, to all ages and ability levels, hoping to develop dance skills, build self-confidence and foster friendships. Each week their 60+ students gain first-hand knowledge about clogging. This true American dance stems from the Appalachian Mountains and revolved around banjo music. It has become modernized and incorporates many dance forms: hip hop, country western, Irish, cheerleading and all types of music. This dance is performed by wearing special shoes that include a tap jingle on the toe and the heel. Moms and daughters, teens and preschoolers have been clogging in Davie, with Rebecca and Lora since 2011. Shows are performed weekly and summers are spent working on demanding routines to perform in major venues including Disney, out of state fairs and the Daytona Beach Clogging Convention. The students and the teachers enjoy the dance as well as bonding with performers from all over the world. Last year, after the Parkland massacre, Rebecca and Lora felt lost and needed to put their feelings of despair into a positive message for their students and themselves, hence creating Dance for Change. Dance for Change is a video, compiled by Rebecca and Lora’s students, to help bring awareness to issues facing our elementary students, teens and women of today. The

main message was to show that we can be positive even when faced with adversity. The video was a huge time commitment and was emotionally and technically challenging but so rewarding for all involved. The topics tackled were bullying, self-image, the #Metoo movement and ended with an inspirational dance surrounding a young singer with Alopecia. Each dancer chose to wear a word that described them best while surrounding this struggling but beautiful young woman with love and admiration. Rebecca and Lora spent many hours teaching the choreography, finding the right music, developing the skits and putting the video together. The video has been viewed by thousands, throughout many states across the US and countries around the world. Dance for Change brought Rebecca and Lora some peace. This project was so meaningful to them. It gave them a platform to reach so many while sharing vital information and hoping to inspire change. The girls in the video were so motivated to dance and perform to help themselves and others. Rebecca and Lora are very proud of their students and hope their video goes viral to give hope and strength to people throughout the world. Clogging has brought such joy to so many and Rebecca hopes that the video is shown on Ellen and brings the students to perform in larger venues like America’s Got Talent and So You Think You Can Dance. They have big dreams for their performers, and why not? If you can dream it, you can achieve it and these women are providing the perfect environment to shape many future stars.

T

urn on a Miami Marlins or Florida Panthers game and you will likely have the opportunity to witness a local artist, painting live on tv, raising money for charity. Joseph has been painting famous athletes, musicians and celebrities for the past few years, all in a quest to help fight childhood diseases. He showcases his paintings during live auctions. Each painting raises thousands of dollars and all the money is donated to charity. Joseph is originally from Scotland and moved to the states to be with his wife, Erin in 2003. Joseph works as a custodian in the Coral Springs/Parkland schools while his wife is raising their 2 beautiful daughters. Joseph continues his custodial duties even as his art is attracting wealthy buyers willing to pay thousands for his work. Helping others, especially children, is Joseph’s goal and he will not stop until he has reached his ultimate goal of raising $1 million. Joseph is a humble man with big plans and an even bigger heart. Painting is actually a new talent for Joseph and we have his wife to thank for introducing him to this activity. Joseph not only wants to donate his own profits as an artist to charity, he wants to encourage artists of the next generation and has already started. Melanie, from the Weston Artist Guild, was hosting an event for her local artists and wanted a new artist to discuss their work with her group. After Joseph was the only one to accept her invitation to speak, He became the guest lecturer for the Weston Art Guild group. Joseph was so nervous to speak about his art, especially in front of other talented artists. He need not have worried. The group was extremely impressed with Joseph’s style of grid painting and stunned by his acts of generosity. Many of the questions revolved around Joseph’s charity auctions and ways he uses his painting

to help. Joseph was extremely grateful to Melanie and the Art Guild for inviting him to share his craft, his vision and allowing him to work outside his comfort zone in such a warm and supportive group. While Joseph has now participated in many auctions and has auctioned over $270,000 in paintings for children’s charities, he is extremely proud to have participated in the Jose Fernandez film- “The Son of South Florida.” Jose was the first celebrity that Joseph painted live. Jose was kind and joyful and just talked to Joseph as though they were friends. Giving people your time and undivided attention means more to Joseph than any gift. Joseph wanted to honor Jose for giving him the time, kindness and smiles during his first live auction. You can watch The Son of South Florida, on Amazon Prime. Joseph is not just an artist, nor a man who raises money for charity, he is a gem. He lives by the philosophy that helping others, giving your time, talent and passion is more important and more satisfying than having tons of money. He wants to encourage everyone to find their own passion and even if it’s out of your comfort zone, he wants people to dream to achieve. Joseph has many projects lined up but the one he is most excited about right now is the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Gala in November. ccording to FeedingAmerica.org, 1 in 8 people are food insecure and 1 in 5 children struggle with hunger translating to 74,730 children that go to bed hungry every night right here in South Florida. 25% of these families do not qualify for any state or federal food benefits. This is why it is essential that community organizations such as Harvest Drive Florida get involved In the fall of 1992, Renee Herman took it upon herself to organize a food drive at Country Isles Elementary that would provide a week’s worth of groceries to 20 Weston area families who were down on their luck. She rallied the students to help with neighborhood canned food drives and camped outside of Publix Supermarkets to accept donations. They succeeded and the 20 families in need were fed. But, she didn’t stop there. Twenty-six years later, Renee is still on a mission to stamp out hunger and help families in need through Harvest Drive. Since the inaugural Harvest Drive, the number of families in need has grown and as a result, this grassroots organization has become a district wide partnership with the Broward County Public Schools. After many years of orchestrating the details of this annual event, Renée has been blessed with several special people to assist her in her efforts. Kim O’Neill, Susan Gross, Davi Leoniff, Jodi Samson and Amy Freund all volunteer to share the responsibilities. “It takes thousands of people to make this happen each year. Organizations, Broward County Schools, and individuals have been instrumental in helping with donations and money to buy groceries,” said Renee.

By Margot Lyons Puleri

Another distinctive characteristic of Harvest Drive is the compassion and dedication displayed each year by students who participate. “What really makes this work, what is truly unique about Harvest Drive, is that it is the students and the schools who donate their time and effort with such enthusiasm to make this a reality,” she says. Many of the students volunteer every year and she has formed a lasting bond with them throughout her time organizing the Harvest Drive. “Teaching children at a young age that their contributions can make a difference in the lives of others is what makes this project so rewarding,” Renee adds. Not only does this make the hard work and sacrifice pay off, it gives her hope for the future and inspires her to do even more. This year, over 200 public and private schools are involved in the mission to collect enough food to feed over 2,400 families throughout Broward County for Thanksgiving. Distribution sites will be set up at 14 local schools, with Western High School being the largest. In addition to these sites, approximately 189 other schools will be taking donations that will then be divided up between the area distribution sites.

Families with children in Broward County Schools are referred to the Harvest Drive by Broward County social workers as well as other local social service agencies based on their financial need. In addition to the week’s worth of groceries and Thanksgiving dinner, families are able to shop in the Harvest Drive’s makeshift stores for a variety of household items that have been donated. Volunteers work all year long collecting donations for the “Harvest Drive Boutiques” so that these families may find things they need at no cost to them. Western High and Pompano Beach High School will be fully stocked with items such as new and gently used toys, clothes and shoes, books and household items that many of us may take for granted are most in need by these families. “What keeps me awake at night worrying is that the day before the families arrive that week before Thanksgiving, we will be short. We need monetary donations and gift cards so we can buy the items we are short on at the last minute. I cannot bear the thought that our local, neighborhood families will go hungry when so many individuals, businesses and organizations have so much to give,” she said.

DIRECTORY • Host a Neighborhood Food Drive to collect non-perishables and things from the list below. • Donate whatever amount of money (gift cards are encouraged as well) and non-perishable food you are able to give. • Feed the volunteers on Monday or Tuesday before Thanksgiving. • Donate toothbrushes, toothpaste, toiletries, clothes, books and toys. • Help sort and pack during Harvest Days at the different distribution sites (visit www.harvestdriveflorida.com for schedule). • Spread the word!

Weston Sports & Activities Directory

Unlike many other not for profit organizations, 100% of donations goes to local families in need! No one gets paid to run this organization,” Renee says. “We need more help. Hunger is a year round challenge.” In addition to the Thanksgiving Harvest Drive, throughout last year they made an additional 1,000 Helping Hands Harvest Drive boxes full of 40 lbs. of non-perishable food that were given out to families with children in our local schools who are hungry. They also start each school year off by providing well stuffed backpacks to nearly 300 students who cannot otherwise afford school supplies.

history to compete in every division of the Youth State Finals, with both their U17 and U19 teams winning State Championships. The club also hosted the inaugural Weston Challenge Cup, which included teams throughout Florida and the Bahamas. Okapi emerged the winners of the U10, U12, U14 and U16 competitions and also broke new territory last year by creating an all-Star Middle School team—the Florida Jaguares¬—to compete in USA Rugby’s Regional Championship Tournament, in which players from clubs across the state were invited to join, with great success; the Jaguares won the tournament, scoring 172 points and conceding only 5. Whilst being competitive and playing a high standard of rugby is important, instilling core rugby values of integrity, passion, solidarity, discipline and respect into everything the club does is the topmost priority. n October of 2018, Weston-based, Okapi Wanderers RFC will commence their 5th season in the Florida Rugby Union, with teams in 9 divisions. As the only rugby club in Broward County to offer opportunities for all ages—from U7 to Old Boys—as well as a family-friendly environment, Okapi Wanderers is quickly becoming South Florida’s home for rugby! From their humble beginnings in a local park—with just 30 kids and a handful of parents—Okapi Wanderers has grown to become one of the largest rugby clubs in the United States, in just four years. During its short time, Okapi Wanderers has become eminently known for promoting players’ development and welfare—with 26 certified coaches, a tireless team of parents, volunteers and support from local businesses, Okapi Wanderers RFC has been able to support both youth and men’s players as they follow their dreams. In the past year, several Okapi alumni have moved on to successfully pursue their dreams through the sport: Former HS Captain, Tomas Gallo, is currently playing in London, UK for one of the oldest Rugby Clubs in the world, London Welsh; while men’s team players, Stephen Sheehan and Alex Tucci both had spells in Ireland playing for Gorey, with Tucci going on to sign a professional Major League Rugby contract with the Utah Warriors. Okapi Wanderers’ list of achievements from the 2017-18 season is quite impressive—they became the first club in Florida Rugby Union

Have You Noticed your Child Experiencing Reading and Language Delays?

or many children, learning to read is a normal developmental process, and by third grade, children are using their “reading skills to learn”. This means that starting in third grade, your child should be reading well enough to comprehend and respond to information in both literature and other subject matter such as history and science. Not all children learn to read in this manner, and their struggles often lead to frustration and academic difficulties. Increasingly, experts understand that reading is spoken language, and the similarities are most apparent in the knowledge of sounds, vocabulary, and grammar. Attention and memory limitations also influence the ease with which some children can process both speaking and reading. The ultimate goal of both speaking and reading is comprehension and expression. Experts agree that children with a history of speech and language delays are 4-5 times more likely to have reading problems than children from the general population, and between 50-70% of these children present with academic difficulties throughout their school years. For example, children who have numerous sound errors often have difficulty discriminating the difference between sounds, so that a /w/ sound can sound the same as a /r/ or /l/ sound. This makes it very difficult to learn how to sound out words. The development of phonological awareness skills, the building blocks of reading, can be very challenging for these children. Reading comprehension is negatively affected by the inability to understand words as a result of a reduced vocabulary, inappropriate grammatical patterns, an inability to express ideas, and difficulty following directions. It is no surprise that reading can be a daunting task for some children! Some early warning signs for emergent literacy (prekindergarten through 1st grade) would include your child’s difficulty learning:

• The letters of the alphabet and the sounds that they make • To rhyme words • To identify and match words with the same beginning and ending sounds • Learning sight words • Blending sounds into simple words • Spelling simple words I have been working privately with children with speech, language and reading delays in the Weston area for over 20 years. While there are numerous scripted programs or tutorials available, my expertise as a speech-language pathologist and a special educator/ reading specialist, allows me to assess each child individually, and then create a specific program to help develop the underlying skills needed to become a fluent, competent reader. It has been a real pleasure to help children succeed, and actually enjoy reading! Please contact Dr. Susan Nullman at 954-349-1280, or 954-260-8424 for further information.

alk into Lady and the Mug and you will be greeted with a warm hello and an invitation to chat. Aimee Tarte, the owner of Lady and the Mug, just has a way of making everyone she meets comfortable and welcome. These are the traits that Aimee brings to her Non-profit organization Tarte’s Hearts. Aimee learned, from life experience, that excuses don’t help you succeed, only hard work, determination and heart. Aimee drew on her own difficult life experiences to help her get through school, become a successful teacher and of course open one of the most popular coffee shops. When Aimee’s father, her rock, suddenly passed away, she felt she needed to honor him. She wanted to create something that would help today’s youth feel empowered to conquer their own life’s troubles while helping others in need. Aimee began Tarte’s Hearts. This non-profit organization is available for all students. There are no academic requirements, no specific talents and no fees, just students who want to make an impact on others. The goal of Tarte’s Hearts is Action with Compassion. Students will learn to have a better self-image while developing new friendships as they learn to help those in need. Tarte’s Hearts hosts a minimum of one event or activity per quarter and has meetings every two weeks. In the meetings, they focus on building character, fostering empathy through supporting one another and also understanding the struggles going on in our world. Then they tackle the issues with suggestions for us to be directly involved in making an impact. Students have participated in reading to younger children, visiting veterans in state nursing homes and working in animal shelters. There is no or limitations on what we can do. Tarte’s Hearts began at South Broward High and had over 40 students attend the first meeting. The organization has branched out into Ramblewood Middle and Coral Springs Charter. Students who attend the meetings and

the events learn about acceptance, embracing differences and celebrating each other’s unique characteristics. When students discovered that the Hispanic students in their school were bullied for their heritage, they put together a Hispanic heritage dance to educate and embrace as well as stop the bullying of these students. Each event begins with a survey of the expectation for the event and ends with a reflection. Questions include: Who did you help? What did you learn? How did it make you feel? How did it change you? Students are being taught to leave their comfort zone and form bonds with students they never liked or never gave a chance. They are encouraged to help make someone’s life better even if they themselves are struggling. Ice breakers, discussions, positive attitudes are all part of how Tarte’s Hearts encourages interaction and acceptance in each meeting and event. Aimee’s goal is to create a club in every school. If students or parents are interested in starting a Tarte’s Hearts chapter at their school, Aimee and her team will help them start their chapter and give them info on getting started. However, in starting each new chapter, Aimee needs your help. The organization is looking for generous and kind people and businesses that would like to sponsor a student to participate. We would love to partner with others to make a difference. With each $30 donation, you can sponsor a student for the entire year and they will send you a letter and photos to build a genuine relationship and show the impact Tarte’s Hearts will have on their life. We encourage you to check out our website www.tarteshearts.com for videos and past events as well. We encourage all students to discover Tarte’s Hearts and change lives. ***Below is the link for giving to our PayPal account. You can also mail checks to 9016 NW 55th St, Sunrise, FL 33351. Please make checks out to Aimee Tarte. All donations are tax deductible and we will mail you a donation letter for your records. Thank you again! PayPal Link: https://paypal.me/pools/c/87Oi2lU

FAMILY HEALTH | I s s u e 6 3 | N ove m be r 2 018 - J an uar y 2 019 healthcare professionals with specific training and experience in the assessment and management of concussions. The sports medicine physicians at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital are frequently involved in the care of patients with concussions and are specifically trained to provide care along the continuum of concussion from management of the acute injury to return-to-play decisions. The Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Concussion Clinic was developed as a multi-disciplinary center for pediatric patients with TBI that streamlines access to care to subspecialties including neurology, neuropsychology, and vestibular therapy in addition to sports medicine and physical medicine and rehabilitation. Is there anything an athlete can do to prevent concussions? Strengthening the neck musculature has been shown to decrease the risk of concussions. Currently, there is no conclusive evidence that helmets, mouthguards or headbands can prevent concussions. Do dancers require specialized care after trauma or for overuse injuries? Dancers and performing artists speak a sport specific language and may require specialized treatment that takes into account their activity. Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital’s pediatric sports medicine program [U18] Sports Medicine developed a Performing Arts and Dance Medicine program centered around getting these athletes back into the studio in an expedited fashion that doesn’t involve only rest. With former company physicians from the Boston Ballet, our team speaks the language which helps quickly and accurately make the diagnosis and get the appropriate treatment plan started. Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital is proud to announce that for the 5th time its Department of Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery was nationally ranked by US News and World Report among the best hospitals for pediatric orthopaedics in the country. We sat down with Dr. Matthew Fazekas, FAAP, CAQSM, a pediatric sports medicine and concussion specialist to discuss current trends in pediatric orthopaedics. Why is it so important that kids see a pediatric orthopaedic specialist? Kids are not little adults. They have open growth plates and normal developmental changes that may be occurring during the course of treating an injury. Seeing a specialist with training focused on the pediatric athlete can get them back on the field as quickly and safely as possible. Who is best qualified to take care of young athletes who suffer a concussion? Concussions may be caused either by a direct blow to the head, face, or neck or by an indirect blow elsewhere on the body with an impulsive rotational force transmitted to the brain. This impact results in the rapid onset of impaired neurologic function that resolves on its own. The resolution of symptoms typically follows a sequential course. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that approximately 1.7 million individuals sustain a Traumatic Brain Injury or TBI in the United States every year. Individuals may suffer multiple traumatic events, especially if playing contact sports. The annual incidence of sports-related concussions in the United States is estimated between 1.6 and 3.8 million. Concussions occur in all sports; the majority of concussions occurring in organized sports are sustained in football, hockey, rugby, soccer and basketball. The care of athletes with sports-related concussions is ideally performed by

HUNTINGTON LEARNING CENTER’S ACADEMIC SUPERSTARS FOR THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR!

s the 2018-2019 school year started in August, Huntington Learning Center and Sports & Activities Directory are proud to introduce you to the first quarter Academic Superstars. Jake H. was looking to improve his ACT score and started at a 23. He increased his official ACT score 11 points all the way to a 34!!!. Gabbi G. increased her ACT score 10 points and went from a 22 all of the way to a 32! Both of these students are now applying to high level, competitive Universities. Hard work pays off. Jacob P. was a kindergarten student, who was struggling halfway through the school year. He increased his confidence and reading abilities exponentially and is now not only caught up, but ahead in 1st grade. This family learned that being proactive is key. Jacob’s brother attended Huntington a few years ago when he was struggling in 4th grade and has been “Most Outstanding Student” in middle school for 2 years in a row. “Huntington isn’t just a Band-Aid for the current issue; it’s a long term solution.” Gabbi G.

it was important for our children to learn about Hispanic cultures. What better way to learn about culture than a night filled with food, music & fun from all Hispanic countries? Eighteen Latin countries ‘came to life’ in an interesting, colorful, and educational way. It was a delightful event where attendees were able to admire an Argentinian Tango performance, taste a variety of Hispanic foods, and even take salsa lessons from “Casa Salsa.” It was a joy-filled night that brought teachers, students, and parents together to support a great cause.

Felicia G.

Felicia G. struggled through Middle School due to a lack of reading comprehension and math skills as well as social anxiety. She took a break from traditional school and started homeschooling after a year in middle school. She worked with Huntington Learning Center for about 9 months on building up her skills, not only in math and reading, but in study skills and coping skills to become a more responsible and confident student. She is now back in a traditional school setting and thriving. We couldn’t be more proud of the confidence and overall growth that Felicia made with Huntington Learning Center. If your child is struggling with any subject let Huntington Learning Center help and maybe they can be the next Academic Superstar.

SCHOOLS onnection is the key to fostering social and emotional development in children. At Country Isles Elementary, Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is woven into the daily curriculum to help students build emotional awareness and to assist them with feeling more connected to their peers at school. To help support this development, the teachers facilitate weekly Morning Meetings. Morning Meetings provide the students at CIE with opportunities to share important aspects of their lives while practicing appropriate social skills, such as waiting for your turn to speak and active listening. During the morning announcements, the students at Country Isles repeat our positive P.R.I.D.E motto. P.R.I.D.E. stands for Positive Attitude, Respect, Integrity, Drive to do the right thing, and Effort towards learning. Students are rewarded with “Brag Tags” for displaying these positive characteristics within the school setting. The students at our school enjoy proudly displaying their brag tags on their backpacks or lanyards. During Peace Week, September 17th-21st, the students in grades 3-5 were provided an opportunity to extend their positive attitudes to others. The 3rd grade students decorated tags with quotes and images that symbolize peace. These tags were used to decorate a Peace Tree inside the media center at our school so that all students could enjoy these

symbols of peace. Students in 4th and 5th grade decorated Starbucks coffee sleeves in the same manner. These coffee sleeves were distributed at a local Starbucks to help spread peace and positivity into the community. All students at Country Isles sent their peace wave around the world on September 21st, when we participated in a “Minute of Silence for a Moment of Peace.” They also dressed like hippies to show their support for peace and love. Country Isles also started a new program this year-“Start with Hello-Sandy Hook Promise.” This initiative teaches students in grades 2-5 how to make positive connections with their peers. The program teaches students how to reach out to other students who are displaying signs of social isolation. The program demonstrates to the students how to make connections with their peers by engaging in three simple steps: 1. See Someone Alone 2. Reach Out and Help 3. Start with Hello. The students are shown how to use icebreakers to begin the conversation and are provided with opportunities to use role-play as an opportunity for practice. The skills learned in the program help students to create lifelong friendships, while fostering key social skills that will prove useful in adulthood. We are learning to become respectful and helpful citizens in our community through the many great programs introduced in school.

f you walked into Gator Run Elementary School during Rock Your School Day, you would have seen some incredible learning experiences! This day was a nationwide initiative started by the “Get Your Teach On” conference to help bring extreme student engagement to classrooms all over the world. The idea was to think outside of the box to get students excited about learning and Gator Run teachers stepped up to the challenge! Third, fourth, and fifth grade classes studied math, science, and reading with an added twist! In a few of our fifth-grade classes, students became detectives and solved the classic “whodunit” of “Who Trashed the Class?” Using their inference skills, students investigated the crime scene to figure out who had messed up their classrooms. They discussed the interesting clues they found (art supplies, a yoga mat, sports balls, science materials, musical instruments, library books and Legos) to get to the bottom of the mystery! Who would have guessed that it was the Specials teachers that made such a mess? Several fourth-grade classes participated in a Battle of the Bands. Dressed in their best rock and roll outfits, students chose band names and then competed against the other bands in epic math and reading battles! There were karaoke contests, air

he 2018 football season ushers in a new era as Josh Shapiro takes the reigns for the Cypress Bay Lightning. Coach Shapiro replaces long-time Cypress Bay football coach Mark Guandolo, who began the program in 2002, and hung up his whistle in January 2018. Guandolo put Cypress Bay on the map with consistent deep playoff runs and a 2012 state runner-up finish. Shapiro returns to Cypress Bay with ties to the program and school. Shapiro was the inaugural offensive coordinator at Cypress Bay in 2002 and has had head coaching jobs at Everglades, Nova and South Broward. Shapiro resigned as Athletic Director at South Broward in order to take the job at Cypress Bay. “Mark did an unbelievable job during his

guitar solos, name that tune contests and more. These were all geared toward a multiplication review and practicing summarizing skills. They giggled and performed their way through the day. Third-grade students experimented with the states of matter, collaborating to discover more about solids, liquids and gases. Their experiments with Pop Rocks and soda led to discussions about how and why balloons inflate; others enjoyed root beer floats and saw the three states of matter in action. Some classes made Oobleck, mixing cornstarch and water, and then classifying it. Was it a solid or a liquid!? Or was it both? In other rooms, kids played a life-sized game of Hungry, Hungry Hippos! Laying on a scooter board and holding a laundry basket, students had to “chomp” and grab a bunch of the different ball pit balls. Each ball color represented a different type of question they had to answer with their team. Gator Run offers innovative activities throughout the year but Rock Your School Day brought out even more creativity and passion in students and staff alike. Check out the school hashtag #gatorrunrocks to get a glimpse into all of the excitement.

tenure at Cypress Bay. He built Cypress Bay into a Broward County power and helped countless kids move onto the next level in college.” According to Athletic Director Scott Selvidge, “Josh is a perfect replacement for Coach Guandolo. Josh is an excellent educator and will take those skills onto the football field. He knows the community and landscape at Cypress Bay. Josh will have a staff that prepares our kids while also playing multiple styles that will accentuate our talent base.” The early returns have gone well at Cypress Bay. The Lightning is off to a 3-0 start with victories over Cooper City, Coral Springs and Pines Charter to start the 2018 season. Shapiro is excited about his return to Cypress Bay and the future, “This is where I want to end my coaching and teaching career. We have

terrific administrative leadership, a great and supportive community, tremendous facilities and the best kids in Broward County. I am really excited about the future and carrying forward the tradition of Cypress Bay football.” We are so happy to have Coach Shapiro join our team.

SCHOOLS “But when they meet one in real life, such as Bob She, they become enthusiastic about reading their books. This really stimulates their excitement and love of reading. It also intrigues them into thinking about writing or illustrating their own works.” Fifth grade students were thrilled to learn Newbery Honor author Jennifer Holm would be visiting with the release of The Third Mushroom, the sequel to The Fourteenth Goldfish. “Her books stimulated my students’ interest in the content area, especially the scientists she mentioned.” explained Mr. Crippen, fifth grade team leader. “They wanted to know more about their accomplishments. As we read The Fourteenth Goldfish, my students kept asking, ‘Where is the fourteenth goldfish?’ and ‘What significance does it hold to the book?’” Students also had the opportunity to participate in the Books & Books contest where one lucky student had the opportunity to introduce Jennifer Holm to their fellow students. Students submitted a paragraph about their favorite character from one of Ms. Holm’s books. Developing a love of reading in students is the passion of Mrs. Mila. “I believe that Weston is very lucky to have schools that believe in the power of a good Media Specialist that can develop a strong collection and introduce our students to new opportunities, such as these author visits.” The Weston schools’ Media Specialists meet monthly to share ideas and build strong Media Centers for the students in Weston.

uthors love to visit schools to meet their young readers, and Indian Trace ES is no exception. Their love of reading has prompted three author visits already this year. Famed author, Chris Grabenstein, visited the fourth graders via Skype inspiring many students to grab a pencil and begin their own writing career. “It was such a pleasure watching our students engage in a live conversation with Mr. Grabenstein!” proclaimed Fourth Grade Dual Language teacher, Mrs. Fernandez. “He was so animated and full of life that my students couldn’t wait to check out or finish his book, Home Sweet Motel! My wish is that my students will be inspired to pick up their pencils and become future writers themselves!” Among his many titles, Home Sweet Motel, is his latest offering and is also on the SSYRA 3-5 reading list. “It’s such a great book that it had to be on our Fourth Grade Book Battle list.” states Mrs. Mila, the school’s Media Specialist who arranged the visits. Picture book author and illustrator, Bob Shea, stopped in to meet the Kindergarten students and monkey around with his latest book, “Crash, Splash, Moo.” In preparation for his visit, students read his many books and drew a picture of what makes them happy to share with the author. Books & Books, an independent bookstore in Miami, provided this incredible experience to students. “When I talk about an author, children don’t really make a personal connection to a person and writing a book.” remarks Mrs. Damas, Kindergarten Dual Language teacher.

t is with great honor that we introduce our new aftercare program, M.B.E. 2.0. Our mission statement is, “We are a Community of Life Long Learning.” Students can explore and challenge themselves through various activities and programs: Robotics, S.T.E.M., Foreign Language, as well as American Sign Language. Kids have a chance to showcase their strengths and expand their capacity to acquire knowledge beyond the classroom. M.B.E. 2.0 has hands-on activities, such as “Kidz Kitchen”. Students learn about healthy eating habits while preparing their own snacks. Our students also learn character traits

through “Organized Outdoor Play”. They learn to play together in a respectful and safe manner. Students can let their hidden talents be showcased through “Drama and Chorus” which are all offered with our program. Kids can express themselves through “Arts and Crafts” where a picture can mean more than a thousand words. As said by the great Educational philosopher, Robert Maynard Hutchins, “The object of education is to prepare the young to ed ucate themselves throughout their lives.” In essence, M.B.E. 2.0 is an aftercare program, but also a tool to help shape our future, which are our Children.

Everglades Elementary Celebrates “Dot Day”

nternational Dot Day allows students to see their full potential. It illustrates how vital teachers are and the profound impact that we have on our students.” This is a statement by Sandy Goldglantz, art teacher at Everglades Elementary. Sandy has always read The Dot, by Peter H. Reynolds to her students during the first week of school. Some students feel that they are not artists, or they can’t draw like Vashti (the main character in the story). Her teacher’s positive approach and encouragement gave Vashti the confidence she needed to believe she can do anything if she tried. Students need the confidence to believe in them and teachers can be that drawing force for student creativity and self-expression. We can all relate to the one teacher who changed our lives. During the month of September, our students came up with their own responses to The Dot. It’s interesting to hear what they have to say. “Have confidence and believe in yourself and you can make things happen.”-Nicolas, 5th grade. “Anyone can draw. All you have to do is try.”-Bautista, 5th grade. “Teachers encourage students to open their minds and be creative”.-Gabrielle, 5th

“Don’t say you can’t do something until you try.”-Alyssa, 5th grade. On Friday, September 14th, the whole school students, teachers, etc. wore dots for International Dot Day (September 15th) to honor the unlimited possibilities that we all hold within. In addition, Mrs. Goldglantz integrated activities throughout the curriculum that celebrated how unique and talented each student is. All classes listened to the story during Art class. In Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten, student sang “The Dot Song” using hand motions. All grades created their own dot inspired art that is displayed in the hallway for all to see. The primary grades colored a dot that is “framed in gold” to display outside of their classrooms. Fourth and Fifth grade students discussed the work of artist Georges Seurat and the style of “Pointillism”- painting using dots. Students learned that their eye can mix colors when dots of different colors are placed close to each other on the page. Outside of the art room door, there was a “Guest Dot Sign in Page”. Students were encouraged to make a dot as they entered the art room. In the words of Peter Reynolds, “Just make a mark… and see where it takes you!”

SCHOOLS Cove’s principal, understands and is thankful to the coaches for their dedication and the time they spend away from their families to coach student athletes. They coach with passion and enthusiasm, and instill pride in representing Falcon Cove. Coach Malone, Falcon Cove’s cheer and track coach said, “All coaches are dedicated teachers and staff and Falcon Cove’s school and athletic program is a success because of them- we couldn’t do it without them!” We have had outstanding student athletes, who have been a part of many great seasons and teams. Their names are on banners in our gym for our students, parents, and visitors to remember and celebrate. Many of our athletes have gone on to play in college and represent their new school with the same honor, dedication, and integrity they learned while they were athletes representing Falcon Cove. Another important influence in Falcon Cove’s success is the unwavering support of Assistant Principals, Mr. Lichtman, Mrs. Rubin, Mrs. Walls, and PTA. Every year brings a new season with great new athletes, coaches, and expectations for an exciting and wining athletic season.

he Athletic Department at Falcon Cove is undeniably one of the best and most successful programs in Broward County. They have achieved much success since it opened in 2000. In 18 years, they have won a total of 52 Division Championship Titles and 28 County Championship Titles (12 County Championships in Boys’ Soccer, 6 in Girls’ Soccer, 1 Boys’ Softball, 4 County Championships in Boys’ Volleyball, and 5 County Championships in Girls’ Volleyball). Eighteen straight years they have won a MSAA County Championship in at least one sport. These achievements are remarkable when you consider there are over 60 middle schools in the County and the amount of time the school has been open. “The Athletic Department is a program the school, faculty, parents, and community can be proud of,” says Falcon Cove’s new Athletic Director Dave Roca who is also the school guidance counselor. Falcon Cove administration, teachers and staff take pride in the strength and leadership of the phenomenal coaches that help make the program such a success. The coaches are truly amazing and work very hard to help the young athletes achieve success not only on the field or court, but also in the classroom. Dr. Kaplan, Falcon

Ah, the excitement of going back to school! New

classrooms, new teachers, new friends and classmates… not to mention new back packs, supplies, shoes and uniforms. For many children, the latter would not be possible, were it not for the Broward County Back to School Extravaganza. And this year, over 7,500 students benefited. $35.00 is all that is needed to outfit a child with what they need to start the school year off on the right foot. For the eighth year, the Children’s Services Council issued a challenge grant to fund back-to-school supplies for students identified by School Board Social Workers and community partners as being economically disadvantaged. Dozens of foundations, corporations, non-profits and individuals stepped up to provide appropriate funding and logistical support to ensure the success of the campaign. Four distribution events took place over two weekends: on July 28th at New Renaissance Middle School and Dillard High School, and on August 4th at Blanche Ely High School and Hallandale High School. As thousands of people lined-up to participate long before the gates opened at each venue, it was clear that the need is great and that events such as these are badly needed to ensure children

begin their school in the best of circumstances. “The kids are very happy and we are very thankful for everything that you are doing for the families here today,” said a father participant at Hallandale’s event with his wife and four children. “This is a great event. I particularly appreciate the new shoes and the book distribution,” said another parent at Ely. Hundreds of volunteers ensured smooth operations throughout. Robust resource fairs added to each family’s ability to receive materials, information and resources, including immunizations, eye exams, KidCare insurance and much more. DJ’s, face painting, games and snacks provided for a carnival like atmosphere, fun for the whole family. The Broward Sheriff’s Office and local law enforcement agencies were also instrumental in ensuring friendly but effective crowd control support and overall smooth operations. The work of the Back to School Extravaganza committee will begin again early in the new year, as we look to continue making the beginning of the school year an exciting and rewarding time for all children.
