Letter from our Founder E

very little girl dreams of being a Mommy someday. That was my dream, too.

While we were plodding along the dark, often confusing, path of infertility, we were completely alone. There was no one there to tell us which turn-off to take and which ones to avoid. No one guided us through the maze of medical intervention or the frustrations of insurance coverage. We were on our own. During those difficult times, I promised that if Hashem would lead us into daylight, we would do whatever we possibly can to be that supporting hand which we so pined for. With a lilt and a song, we were bh privileged to have a charming little mobile playing its music in our home. To the backdrop of its soothing lullabies, A TIME came into existence. At first, it was but a dream‌but before long, it evolved into an organization that is there for the realization of our sweetest dreams. When I stand amidst the ringing telephones and hubbub of activity in the A TIME offices, I marvel. From the dream-like threads of wistful hopes, an empire of support has come into existence.

“H

ello, Monsey Tours. Please hold.” “Yes, the busses are running late. Give it another ten minutes.” “Hello, Monsey Tours. At least a halfhour delay. No, they left on time but with the snow coming down…” I jab one line after another, barely keeping pace with the ringing telephones. It is a short, wintry Friday and the snow is coming down with gusto. I am of the opinion that bus coordinators should be given a bonus for every delayed school trip. Unfortunately, I am not entrusted with the distribution of said bonuses. I love my job at Monsey Tours. Here, I am just the secretary. The efficient, all-capable secretary who can handle everything with aplomb. It is only once I step out of the office that I transform into Baila the failure. Only when I leave my office chair behind do I become poor Baila who has been married for eight years and is still childless. I become that girl who was in my class and is still waiting for children. Isn’t it sad? I become the most popular address for pitying stares and unsolicited advice.

In my little office, I am safe. “I’m sorry, Mrs. Kohn. The traffic is simply horrific now.” “Yes, I hear you loud and clear. I said I hear you-” I pull the receiver away from my ear as Mr. Engel’s voice reverberates across the wires. “I don’t understand!” he rages. “Do you know that I am standing out in the cold for twenty-five minutes?!” “I – I truly apologize, Mr. Engel. The drivers are doing their best, and it’s

ed advisable that you wait calmly-“ “Calmly?! You cannot imagine what it’s like to worry about a child coming home in such weather!” he declares forcefully. I want to cry out but my voice is tangled in his suffocating words. The

receiver feels like a leaden weight in my hand and I let it clatter back on the base, unnoticed. You cannot imagine what it’s like to worry about a child. How true, Mr. Engel. I have never worried about a child. Never waited for a bus. Never called a trip organizer with complaints. Never never never. And if the doctors are to be believed, chances are slim that I will ever do any of those things. The phones are still ringing nonstop. I try to breathe the pain away; to squeeze it into a tiny corner of my heart until I could give it the attention it deserved. “Hello, Monsey Tours.” My voice quavers slightly but I hope that Mrs. Grunhut is too frazzled to notice. “Yes. It – it must be hard to wait so long for the bus,” I mumble hesitantly. Not that I would know or understand… as Mr. Engel so kindly pointed out. For twenty torturous minutes, I force myself to speak cordially and coherently. I reassure, explain, ask and investigate. The parents are satisfied. The bus drivers remain relatively calm. The transmitter crackles as it came

to life. ‘Office, do you copy?’ “Yes, I hear you.” ‘Last child was dropped off. Good Shabbos.’ I breathe a sigh of relief. The last bus has finished its route. I am free to go. With a flick of my finger, I plunge the office into complete darkness. It becomes black and silent. Just like my life. I walk out of the office and lock the door behind me with a clang of finality. There, that should do it. But those horrible words creep right out through the tiny keyhole and perch themselves on my shoulder with sinister smiles. You can’t imagine what it’s like to worry about a child… I am trapped. There is no way I could go home and drown Reuven in this ocean of grief. The stinging words have already done enough damage. Dragging my feet through the slushy sludge that has accumulated at each curb, I head toward my personal oasis. It is the place I visit whenever I receive a disappointing diagnosis, devastating news, or particularly insensitive remarks. Today certainly qualifies as a VIP ticket to this destination. The Chocolate Shoppe.

de You can’t imagine what it’s like to worry about a child…

ed

The store is blessedly empty on this snowy, windblown day. I glare at the delicate chocolate arrangements sitting so prettily on the shelves. With jerky movements, I snatch a package of toffeefilled caramels, two boxes of jelly-rings, and a family-size container of truffles. Family-size, Baila, I note ruefully. For someone who cannot imagine what it’s like to worry about a child, you sure are going into the big leagues. “Madam, could I offer you a basket?” a saleslady asks. The chocolate boxes teeter in my hands as I try to shake my head with a modicum of dignity. “No, I’m nearly done,” I mutter. “Just one or two more.” I need something thick and creamy to completely obliterate what I don’t want to hear or remember. Ah, these nougatrolls should do the trick. The saleslady is still eyeing me

strangely as she rings up my purchases. I force myself to smile at her confusion. She could very well believe that I am buying this load of heavenly junk for…for my child’s birthday party. For someone who has never yet worried about a child’s bus, I sure have some creative ideas for said child’s birthday bash. I almost smile at the irony. I believe that the chocolate is beginning to weave its magic. With the bag tucked snugly under my arm, I head towards home. The past few hours have been grueling, but at least Reuven will be spared my anguish. With my impromptu shopping spree and a fair dose of skillful acting, my charade is good to go. I take a deep, cleansing breath and push open the door. Enter frontstage. Smile brightly and call out a cheerful greeting. “Hello, Reuven! It’s so wonderful to be home!” Reuven ambles into the kitchen and glances at the bulging bags I am trying to stuff into the cupboard. He sighs. “Hard day today, huh?”

Twice

TESTED Excerpts from Mr. Eliezer Braun’s inspiring story as told at the A TIME Shasathon– February 16, 2014

A

lmost five years ago, a mere two weeks before my chasunah, I was diagnosed with cancer in my right leg. With the support of our parents and the blessings of Gedolim, we were able to stand under the chuppah with hopes and dreams for a beautiful home. Four days later, during the week of sheva brochos, I started chemo. I was a newly-married young man celebrating

my marriage with a visit to the oncology ward. Most of our first year was spent in Sloan-Kettering Hospital. There were so many ups and downs; so many hopes and disappointments. But, by the time Pesach came along, we were able to join all of Klal Yisroel in rejoicing with our redemption. We were free.

be facing another test. The nisayon of infertility.

People sometimes ask me, “What was the hardest part of the whole ordeal?” I know what they expect to hear. They think that the most crushing moment was when the doctors informed me that they have to amputate my right leg. They believe that the most difficult time was when I woke up post-surgery, after losing my leg.

I was a newly-married young man celebrating my marriage with a visit to the oncology ward.

But for me, the hardest part was something else. It was when the chemo was so strong and it made my body so weak. I would lie in bed and see my kallah crying with indescribable fear and anguish. I was too weak to say anything; too crushed to offer any encouragement. For me, that was the most painful aspect of my illness. Boruch Hashem, we moved on. We started to integrate into regular life, with the hope we once had of raising a Yiddishe family. But the tears that we had thought were gone forever now came back. We realized that we would

Nowadays, cancer is a public nisayon, especially in my case, where my amputated leg is an announcement of what I went through. There was so much support; so much warmth

and understanding from our families, friends and rebbeim. But the anguish of infertility is different. Although it’s unfortunately common, it remains hidden due to the sensitivity and private nature involved. We were missing the emotional support that we desperately needed to see us through these difficulties. It’s not that our families and friends didn’t love us and didn’t want to help us. Quite the contrary, in fact. Since this nisayon is so sensitive, it was hard for us to include them in our pain and it was hard for them to understand all the emotional dynamics that were at play. Therefore, when we first went to an A www.atimeauction.com

TIME Shabbatom I was simply blown away by how many other couples like us were dealing with the same issues. We realized that we were not alone. I had always known that there were too many of us in this situation, but seeing the others and speaking with them was cathartic. We heard their stories and they listened to our story. We knew and we felt that there is tremendous support out there. We got a new family who would see us through the painful years. When we woke up early in the morning to go to doctors’ offices and it was snowy and raining or dark and cold, we knew that we were not alone When a treatment had failed and the disappointment was almost too crushing to bear, we knew that we were not alone. On Yom Tov, when we spent so much together with our families and our nieces and nephews, yet we felt so isolated – we knew that we were not alone. When we went to a hachnosos Sefer Torah and we saw all the charming little Yiddishe kinderlach running around with their flags – we were not alone. Every single morning when we left the house and tried to put smiles on our faces

48 718-WIN-1234 | 718-FAX-1234

I had always known that there were too many of us in this situation, but seeing the others and speaking with them was cathartic. despite the pain in our hearts, we were not alone. This past Chanuakah (5774) we were zoche to make a bris. We named our son Yosef Yehuda. Yehuda, because we wanted to give tremendous thanks and praise to Hashem, and Yosef, so that we should always merit adding to that praise. The journey was long and difficult. It was a challenge to our emunah; a challenge to who we are and who we thought ourselves to be. Hashem led us out of the darkness and blessed us with our little Yosef Yehuda, who should always bring honor to Hashem and to Klal Yisroel. May everyone still meandering through the paths of challenge merit praising Hashem in endless gratitude, amidst blessing and happiness.

Grapes Grapefruits Of

and

64 718-WIN-1234 | 718-FAX-1234

I

nterviewers: Hi, all. Allow me to introduce our two interviewees, Sara K. and Breindel R. They have been close friends for many, many years and they have a fascinating story to share. Sara: Just for the record, Breindel and I are not one of those ‘best friends forever’ advertisements. We’re too different. Breindel: (laughs) Yeah, we’re like a grape and a grapefruit. They both have the same ‘grape’ word in their names, but that’s where the similarity ends. Sara: (annoyed undertone) And you’re not by any chance placing me as the grapefruit, are you? Breindel: No, no. of course not. You’re that squishy little grape that barely gets noticed. (grins wickedly) Sara: Strike that from the record, please. (clears her throat) Back to our story. Breindel and I are the same age – Breindel: Thirty-three, if you must know. Sara: And we were childless for the same number of years – Breindel: Eleven. (grins) Yeah, I know

you’re all curious.

Breindel answered. (laughs heartily)

Sara: We got acquainted at one of these IF support programs and we hit it off right away, despite our differences.

Breindel: Goodness. (looks away) You don’t have to broadcast my ignorance.

Breindel: I don’t know how it happened. Why would a girl like me, born, bred, and wed in the heart of Satmar Chassidus, hook up with Sara from Crown Heights? Interviewer: (disappointed) So…uh… that is very fascinating.

I couldn’t fathom it! I mean, really! A Yoilish in Crown Heights?! Sara: (laughs) Oh, the story has just begun, my friend! It was a few years after that first meeting that Breindel started nudging me. Constantly. Breindel: (miffed) Discount that. It was the other way around. Sara pestered, begged, pleaded and actually insisted that I accompany her to the Lubavitcher Rebbe’s Ohel. Sara: “Come to the Ohel,” I begged her. “You’ll see. It will bring about your yeshuah.” And you cannot imagine what

Sara: Breindel was horrified. “The ohel?!” she repeated. “Isn’t that…like…a tent, or something?” Breindel: Well, your goof was as good as mine, Sara. I mean, why did you think that the tziyon in Monroe has any connection to Yerushalayim?! Sara: Come on. That mistake is understandable. (to interviewer) Isn’t tziyon another name for Yerushalayim? Interviewer: I think – Breindel: In any case, Sara agreed to come with me to the Satmar Rebbe’s tziyon on condition that I accompany her to the Ohel. Sara: It was a deal! (pause) But you didn’t hear the best part of it. (whispers) I promised that if I would be blessed with a boy within the year, I would name him after the Satmar Rebbe, R’ Yoel zt”l. Breindel: And I pledged to name my son in the tradition of Lubavitch. I chose the name of the previous Rebbe, R’ Yosef Yitzchok zt”l. Sara: What can I tell you? It didn’t take

long and I had some good news to share. My prayers had been answered. Now I had to fulfill my part of the deal. Breindel: You should have heard her muttering. Yoel? Yoey? Yoellish? Yoilish? Yoe? Sara: I couldn’t fathom it! I mean, really! A Yoilish in Crown Heights?! Breindel: (shakes her head ruefully) She was afraid to tell her husband about the pledge she had made. Sara: Every time we started discussing baby names, I sort of…blanked out. Or got a headache. Or lost my earring. It was pathetic. Breindel: It was such a relief when I finally got her Mazel Tov text. ‘How’s Yoel?’ I texted back. Sara: Oh, that was go-o-o-d. Because you know what I answered? ‘She’s a real beauty!’ Interviewer: A girl! After all that! Breindel: Yup! But my story ended differently. I was blessed within the year with a beautiful, wonderful, gifted – Sara: (whispers frantically) Breindel! You promised! Breindel: Oh. Right. She doesn’t let me

Every time we started discussing baby names, I sort of…blanked out. ...It was pathetic. talk about him in an interview. So let’s try this again. That year, I was blessed with – Sara: Just say it. Dry facts, Breindel. Remember? Breindel: (nods) I got my…son. My wonder – uh, my adopted son. And I knew that he was already a few weeks old. He had already been given a name at his bris, so ‘Yosef Yitzchok’ was definitely not happening. Sara: She called me up as soon as the adoption papers went through. “I can’t fulfill my promise,” she said. “I suppose it wasn’t meant to be.” Breindel: It took a few weeks until everything was settled. I went to pick up my little boy. Sara: And she texted me on the way home. ‘I get a Mazel Tov. I’m sitting near my gorgeous little boy, on the way to our house.’

Breindel: Tell her what you replied – Sara: ‘Mazel Tov, Mommy!’ I wrote with, like, a thousand exclamation points. ‘Now you don’t have to worry about what your neighbors and friends will say about a Lubavitcher name.’ Breindel: Oh, did I laugh. Right there, in the car, I laughed until I thought I would wake up my precious baby. My…Yosef Yitzchok. Sara: Who would’ve imagined?! Breindel: So, when my neighbors in Monroe ask me who he’s named after, I tell them that I don’t know, but I think he might be named for the Lubavitcher Rebbe. Sara: That’s our remarkable, unbelievable, true story. In a nutshell. Breindel: (chuckles) In a grapefruit, you mean.

Never Never Land

82 718-WIN-1234 | 718-FAX-1234

T

here is a five-letter word in the English language that is larger than life. It blocks your vision and sucks out every last bit of oxygen from your existence. Never.

Before ‘never’ entered my life, I was Mimi. Cheerful, sunny Mimi who could always be relied on for a good quip or quirky idea, until ‘never’ dug its icy fingers into my heart and bits of me got frost-bitten. Our Doctor told us, more than six years ago, that the statistics were not all that promising. “We’re not a statistic,” Yehuda firmly replied. The doctor sighed and looked down at his desk. “Have you ever considered adoption?” he asked quietly. I recoiled from the question but it was stronger than me. It grabbed a little corner of my heart in its icy grip, leaving an imprint that could neither be ignored nor dissolved. We were determined to prove the doctor wrong. We would be the miniscule percentage that gave others in our position the opportunity to hope and

dream. The statistics seemed equally determined to add us to their ranks. Months and years marched on, and we were still in the waiting room. Ninety-six hours ago, Yehuda and I were ushered out of that waiting room. After twelve years of marriage, we are no longer waiting for ‘life’ to begin.

The doctor sighed and looked down at his desk. “Have you ever considered adoption?” he asked quietly. But the room we entered was not the one we had pinned our dreams on. Its walls were not painted in pastels and there were no teddy bears strewn about. It was a cold, black room that had nothing in it aside from a single word. Never. “I’m sorry,” Dr. Kevin said at 7:00 on that black, black Monday morning. “We’ve tried…everything.”

The quiet in the room was unnerving. “I would advise you to concentrate your efforts on adoption.” Yehuda stood up quickly and leaned over the mahogany desk. His fists were clenched and he was breathing heavily. “We have come to you for treatment. Not for advice,” he countered, desperation making his voice sharp. The professor didn’t answer immediately. He toyed with his pen and rearranged the papers in our thick file. For a moment, he flipped through the pages that followed our torturous route for twelve long years. “I would stop at nothing to help you achieve your dream,” he finally said. “But it would be cruel to continue when there is virtually no hope for success.” “Doctor, are you implying that…that we will never have children?!” Yehuda demanded. At that moment, my heart ceased to exist. It simply froze into a block of ice. The doctor must have replied to Yehuda’s desperate words. He probably spoke about adoption; about miracles; about the field of medicine constantly evolving. But for me, nothing mattered.

www.atimeauction.com

83

I wanted to stand in the center of the bustling streets – in the midst of all those carriages and toddlers and round-faced little boys – and stamp my feet at the unfairness of it all. I had met ‘never’ and I feared that ours would be an enduring relationship. It’s been four days since my life came to a screeching halt. Yehuda returned to his job at the office today, claiming that it would be better for him to concentrate on other things. Other things?! I thought as I watched him button his coat. Does anything else still exist?! Don’t you realize that you will never be a Totty?! Now I sit at the window and watch him drive away. The street is pulsating with life. I see three-year-old Shany digging in the snow, her little red mittens darting cheerfully about. She is waiting for her school-bus, along with the other neighbors. I squint, trying to enter a world that has closed its door in my face. But ‘never’ doesn’t let. It stands before my eyes, blocking the snow and the sunshine and the cherubic little faces. I will never wait for a school bus. I will

turning into a weapon; a sword of finality.

never pull on little red mittens and little red boots. I will never kiss a child goodbye.

But his words have come back, as I knew they would. I don’t want to hear them. I don’t want to be comforted. For now, I want to hide behind ‘never’ and wallow in its black shadows.

No tears. Just a deep, black hole where my heart used to be. One of the neighbors walks out of her house and bumps her stroller down the steps. Bump. Bump-bump. I try to see the baby sleeping inside, but ‘never’ obstructs my view. I will never cuddle a newborn. I will never wrap a soft blanket around a tiny little body. Never will I smooth down freshlywashed hair. I will never place band-aids over scraped knees and elbows. The ‘nevers’ are marching around me in ever-increasing numbers. I feel them stifling me. Every one of my dreams is

Yehuda’s words come back to me, louder and more insistent than when he’d said them this morning. “Mimi, will we define ourselves by what we don’t have?” I had pushed his words away. This was not simply something we don’t have. This wasn’t a house or a car or a new kitchen. This was us! Our life! Our future!

But maybe…maybe tomorrow I will be able to sneak a peek at my life and find my place therein. Maybe tomorrow I will find the courage to define myself by who I am…instead of by the Mommy that I will never be.
