Letter from our Founder

very little girl dreams of being a Mommy someday. That was my dream, too. How many little girls entertain visions that take them one step further? Delicious, cuddly babies are truly the stuff of dreams…but I, for one, never pictured those little babies growing up and having children of their own. My precious little granddaughter changed all that. I wasn’t prepared for the onslaught of emotions that she would awaken. She took me back to those years of waiting; the years of silence that were punctured only by disappointment and desperation. When I hold her close, I am vividly reminded of that long-ago promise. We vowed that upon tasting the sweetness of salvation, we would do everything possible to spare others this agonizing loneliness. We would stand at their side for we had felt the searing pain of standing alone.

But our little flower, our Blima’la, is showing me that A TIME is so much more than it appears at first glance. A couple that is finally blessed with the actualization of their deepest hopes has been blessed with…eternity. Those innocent eyes and feather-soft cheeks bespeak generations! As you crouch to the ground and gently plant seeds of hope in hearts darkened by despair, do you realize that you are sowing eternity? Your support is a flower that will blossom forever.

WHISPERS NIGHT in the

“W

e’d better call it a night,” I told Chayala as the large kitchen clock stared down at us with disapproval. “Missing tomorrow’s bris is just not an option.” Though I wish it was, I thought ruefully.

10 718-WIN-1234 | 718-FAX-1234

I love my little sister Shuly. I really do. And I’m the most loving, involved aunt her children could wish for. With three little boys running circles around her and around each other, I often enjoy playing the role of heroic rescuer. But going to Shuly’s fourth bris is pushing the borders of the impossible. Chayala yawned theatrically with

“Hundreds of fervent ‘Simchos by you!’ reverberated in my ears..” Chayala stood in the center of the dimly-lit kitchen and bowed humbly. “My pleasure, sister dear,” she intoned. “Rina, sleeping on the living-room sofa is my dream come true.” You know when you’re so tired

insensitive comments, you would think I’d know to steer clear of them. I trudged upstairs to Chayala’s pink-and-white bedroom. Sholom had gone to sleep hours ago, as most sensible adults are wont to do. Only Chayala and I had burned the midnight oil in an effort to vanquish our personal dragons. The prospect of tomorrow’s bris loomed ominously in that dark space behind my drooping eyelids. Hundreds of fervent ‘Sim-

I almost forgot!” I said out loud, dropping the mound of jumbled belongings back into our suitcase. “Perek Shira!” I had undertaken to recite Perek Shira for forty days as a zechus for Chayala, my baby sister who had been floundering in the sea of shidduchim for nearly a decade.

piles of papers and notebooks. Sholom stirred as my rummaging became ever more frantic. I must find it! I can’t go to sleep until I do this for Chayala! My fingers closed around a laminated two-page pamphlet that was wedged unobtrusively in the corner of the third shelf. I had struck gold!

I would usually say it at night to make sure I didn’t forget, though the allotted time stretched until sundown of the following day. “I can’t leave this for tomorrow,” I told myself firmly. “Between the bris, the seudah, and our trip back home, I might very well forget.” The thought of trudging downstairs in search of a Perek Shira

MINUTES with RABBI MORDCHE KOENIG

It’s not often that Rabbi Koenig’s phone goes silent. On one recent occasion, we grabbed at the chance to ask ATIME’s Director of Medical Affairs to reveal what motivates him, what “director” really means and how to be a comfort to someone in pain.

30 718-WIN-1234 | 718-FAX-1234

1

What does your job title actually mean?

Officially, anything related to medicine and medical policy. I’m the point person for doctors and clinics. I work with anyone dealing with complications in their journey. But in truth, when you’re dealing with people, the official title means much less. Whatever is needed, whatever it takes, we make sure that there is always someone to call and very often I am that someone.

2

You’ve been a central figure in ATIME for about seven years. Has your job changed over the years?

Our whole organization has grown astronomically, ‫בלע”ה‬. The number of calls is growing. Our ability to respond is growing. One area we are particularly proud of is a upgraded partnership with Weill Cornell, home to some the world’s best fertility specialists, to designate equipment exclusively for couples undergoing treatment with Hashgacha. This is a major breakthrough for frum couples and it took dedication from many parties to make it a reality. We’re very grateful.

Where are you, my little candles? I cry behind my tear-soaked palms. You were there to guide me through the hardest times…and now you’re gone! Now, when I’m ready to welcome you and hold you and hug you tight, you’ve disappeared! This happens every week. Sometimes I am still grasping wispy threads of hope while I stand before my two lonely Shabbos candles. Other times, I am shattered, grappling with acute disappointment. I remember standing before a table covered – literally covered! – with candles, all dancing and glimmering in unison. It was at an A TIME Shabbaton, and I was in the company of women who understood; women who also lit their lonely candlesticks, week after painful week. For once, my table was bursting with flames! I looked into those little fires, seeking the innocence and purity that I longed to call my own. I sought cherubic faces and tiny

66 718-WIN-1234 | 718-FAX-1234

little fingers. I tried to feel feathery-soft cheeks and warm, trusting breaths…but it wasn’t there.

Where are you, my little candles? Instead, I felt strength. I felt emunah. That entire flaming table was awash with such beautiful, pure tears; tears that flowed from a place deeper than speech and richer than song. I held onto that feeling for many long, dreary weeks thereafter. It helped me light my candles despite a doctor’s dire prognosis and despite a most wrenching loss. I am still standing there, my friends, in front of my two lonely Shabbos licht. My entire life revolves around them. They brought me to where I am now… and I wish – oh, how I wish

and daven and hope – that they will welcome other little flames into their luminous circle. My friends, I know you want to hear the happily ever after ending to my story. You want to see me standing at a Shabbos table bursting with little, gorgeous flames. For now, I continue to wait. My lichtelech are waiting for me, too. I’m sure of it. They’ve been winking to me for more than a decade, waiting for our Tatte to ignite their pure neshomos. But for now…it’s just two.
