Dear Friends,

‫א ֹ ִתי‬

ֶ‫א‬ ‫ת‬ ‫ה‬ ַ ‫נ‬ ‫ע‬ ‫ ָ ִרים‬B Dear Friends,

edtime has become quite a buzzword in every home inhabited by several pint-sized family members. The nightly scramble to get children bathed, into pajamas, and under their covers is an exercise in restraint and coordination. It terms itself the ‘bedtime routine’ but in my family there’s one part that never became routine, no matter how many times it was done. Though my children have long outgrown the nightly Krias Shema ritual with Mommy, we all remember it with nostalgia. As I watch the light creeping out from under their bedroom doors long after I’m ready to call it a night, I remember the days

January/February 2018/Volume 17/Issue 5/ATIME Dreams is published five times a year September, December, March, April and June by A Torah Infertility Medium of Exchange – 1310 48th Street #406, Brooklyn NY, 11219 Postage paid at Pittsburgh PA post offices.

ְ ְ‫המַל‬ ָ ‫א‬ ‫ך‬ ַ ‫ה‬ ַ ‫ג‬ ‫ֹאֵל‬ when I was the one snapping the light closed. Each night, I sat down with my little ones to recite Krias Shema and I’ll never forget that nightly thrill of disbelief. As I sang the words, while prompting little hands to cover innocent, trusting eyes, I was transported back to a time when this was nothing more than a wistful dream. In those years, Krias Shema was a tefillah; a cry; a plea. When I covered my eyes each night, my heart bled into the darkness of that small space where nothing existed aside from Hashem. I begged for clarity; for wisdom. In the darkness of night, my fears multiplied and I wondered if I would ever be privileged to teach the secrets of Shema to a child of my own. We were lost in a maze of medical drama and trauma and we didn’t know where to go. During the day, I groped for optimism and hope. But the evenings chased them all away and I promised myself that if Hashem would actualize our dreams, we would do everything in our power to help others do the same. The tremendous siyata dishmaya

we are privileged to experience along the way is our own rendition of Hamalach Hagoel. At A TIME headquarters, we constantly feel the presence of Hashem and His messengers when matters thought impossible become reality and dreams almost relinquished become actualized.

So join us, dear friends, in our foray into the world of dreams. Every parent dreams of tucking a little child into bed each night, reciting Krias Shema together, and then kissing him goodnight as he drifts into the land where anything is possible. Because it is true. Anything is possible. Enter the world of A TIME, where dreams become reality be’ezras Hashem.

AN INTERVIEW

In Search of a

HER I

f we were to set out on a quest for heroes in our times, the modest Einfeld home in Yerushalayim might seem an unlikely destination. The secular view of heroism has given rise to associations of strength, influence, and supernatural powers. But our heroes are different. They are heroes of the spirit; heroes of the soul.

1 4 / 7 18 -W I N -1 2 3 4 / 7 1 8- FAX-1234

RO Young Ezriel Einfeld grew up in the alleyways of Yerushalayim. His life revolved around Ger, as he and his family are ardent Gerrer chassidim. When he stood under his chuppah, surrounded by family and friends, the streets themselves seemed to join in the rejoicing. He was a young husband, looking ahead to years of growth and fulfillment as he set the cornerstone for his home and future. Had you asked him

what he predicted for the next decade, his answer would have mirrored the reality evidenced in his friends’ lives. One child, another child, and then the cozy little apartment would begin feeling a bit tight at the seams. At this point, his conjectures might have grown fuzzy. Would he look for another home, or would that be financially impossible? Would more children blossom and thrive in this apartment or would they greet the AT I ME AU C T I ON.COM / 1 5

The children ran circles around him, as though he didn’t exist. Their eyes were focused on their siblings and parents. They didn’t spare a moment’s thought to the young man who watched the years slip through the hourglass, silent and unchanging. As the lively neighborhood boys became serious young yeshivah students and then donned their bar mitzvah garb, the years seemed to pick up their pace. Time whirled by faster and faster, with one simchah following joyously on the heels of another. Only in the Einfeld home did time stand still. Or so it seemed. Nearly two decades had elapsed since they had stepped over the threshold of their new apartment, awash with dreams and hopes. At 1 6 / 7 18 -W I N -1 2 3 4 / 7 1 8- FAX-1234

And after twenty-one years – after more than 250 months – the visions from young Ezriel Einfeld’s chuppah finally came into focus. A beautiful little boy was born to the Einfeld couple; a boy who brought sunshine and laughter into a home that bestowed those very same gifts on others.

True heroes, after all, never see themselves as such. Q: Shalom Aleichem, Rabbi Einfeld. This must be a busy day but perhaps you can answer a few short questions for us.

A: Certainly, with pleasure. Many childless couples find specific times harder to endure, such as the Pesach Seder, Purim, or even the simchah of a

ATime

RABBINICAL TRAINING Rabbanim from the greater New York area gathered for an intense A TIME training session, ably led by A TIME’s revered Dayan, Rabbi Chaim Aron Ungar, and Dr. David Lubel. The conference brought the attendees up-todate regarding the latest developments in the field, so that they are well-equipped to offer halachic guidance in these sensitive matters. A TIME regularly conducts rabbinic conferences, reaching out to rabbanim and dayanim across the world. These frequent gatherings are crucial in a field where technology and treatments advance at such a rapid clip.

BY VIVIENNE MOSKOWITZ

I felt like an actress on stage who had forgotten her lines. Not a very good feeling, let me tell you. I held the telephone receiver in my hand and dialed the numbers, one by one. I dialed as slowly as my dignity allowed, but even the slowest dialer eventually reaches the end of a 10-digit number. 718. Pause. Deep breath. 686. Longer pause. Deeper breath. 8912. Bang!! I wildly hit the off button before the call could be transmitted. I was not – repeat, not – going to do this! If you know me, even just a bit, you can imagine why I was finding it so difficult to actually place that call to A TIME. Vivienne Moskowitz was always there for everyone. I loved helping people and offering my advice. I was a pro at solving problems – others’ problems, that is. The thought of reaching out for help was so foreign to me. Motzei Shabbos. I will never forget the emotion that washed over me then. Like a tidal wave, it obliterated everything in its path aside from me and those few magical words. We’d love to help you. Someone out there knew what I was going through and wanted to help me. It was such a revelation, and now – looking back – I think it was the shock of the moment that compelled me to leave a message after the prompt. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.

I had placed the call and even earned some extra credit by leaving a message. In my opinion, this definitely called for some back-pat-

ting and self-congratulations. What happened next was totally unexpected. The telephone rang. Need I remind you that it was after 1 a.m. on a cold, wintry Motzei Shabbos? There was no way I was going to miss the thrill of a prank call at this hour of the night, so I lifted the receiver and chirped my friendliest ‘hello’. “Hi, this is Brany Rosen from A TIME,” was the decidedly un-prankster-like reply. Oh. Double and triple oh. This wasn’t nameless, faceless A TIME calling me back. This was Brany Rosen, a friend’s friend whom I had been privileged to get to know

The candles spoke and sang and whispered, telling of challenges met and overcome. They breathed our pain and echoed our hopes.

It was just a moment in time; a passing shadow that touched us as it brushed past. But I knew that I had been touched by eternity; by a power infinitely greater than anything I had ever known. The pain is still there. But our Tatte is there, too. I felt His presence, encircling our flames, our hundreds of little neshamalach that are nestled beneath His protective wings, waiting…just waiting for the right moment.

If you happened to be shopping in Little Shoeshine on Sunday, September 4th, you certainly remember me. You probably called your mother or sister or friend later that night and discussed the strange woman who tried to buy shoes for her toddler without bringing him along to the store. It’s all coming back to you, isn’t it? “Sruly woke me up at six I’m going to take a chance here o’clock, after a measly two and spill my story, with the flimsy hours of sleep,” Ruchy continhope that all thirty-seven amused ued. “He’s teething again.” customers have suffered a temWhatever. porary memory lapse regarding “So…what are you doing tothat embarrassing incident. day?” I asked, holding my breath Earlier that September morning, for an infinitesimal second. unawares, especially since the salesman had just bellowed, “Next! #34!” But my little boy needed shoes for school, didn’t he? So, just like everyone else, I leaned over the display to check out those tiny little things. Laces or Velcro? Patent leather or suede? Black, navy, brown, or gray? So many choices! I turned to the lady on my right and asked her whether the suede gray shoes seemed like a good idea. “Well, how old is he?” she asked as she stuffed a snack bag into her toddler’s hand. “Who?” I asked, and then quickly retracted. “Oh, my son. He’s – well – he’s just about his age.” I pointed at the blonde-haired toddler standing at her side. “Almost two years old?” I nodded. Sure, why not? I imagined an almost two-year-old pulling

at my skirt, his curly brown hair bouncing merrily as he demanded snacks and goodies and a drink. He was cute, my little boy. Blue eyes, a button nose, and the roundest cheeks I could dare to imagine. By the time I finished painting my phantom little boy’s image, the woman was gone. I figured that the gray suedes would work well for Little Boy, though he would probably destroy them before winter would even set in. “Next!” the harried salesman screamed some two hours later. “Who’s next? Anyone here is #94?” “That’s me!” I triumphantly exclaimed, waving my ticket in the air. The salesman pulled his stool over and rubbed his eyes. “Right foot, kid.” He held the measuring board on the floor and leaned over to check my son’s shoe size. There was

just a slight problem. There was no foot on the measuring board. There was no kid to speak of. “Just put your foot on the board,” he sighed. “Don’t you see how many people are waiting their turn?!” When the foot still did not appear in his line of vision, the salesman looked up. I was sitting on the bench. Myself. Just me and my phantom Little Boy. “Where did they go?” he asked. Good question. Where did all

If they don’t show up here pronto, you’ve lost your chance.” I was not about to relinquish my rights, kids or no kids! “My little boy isn’t here,” I informed the salesman. “But that’s fine. I’ll buy the shoes without him. I want those gray suede shoes with the laces.” It was silent for a very long minute. Some mothers glanced
