f you’ve read our past auction catalogs, you’ve read my story too: The years of waiting and dreaming to become a mother. The promise my husband and I made that when salvation did come—we were confident it would—we’d devote ourselves to helping other couples cope with this lonely journey. Twenty-three years since that promise, ATIME has grown into a dynamo of guidance, advocacy and world-class support. Yet, even as the organization has grown to include offices around the world, multiple departments and dozens of professionals, it is still the individual stories that power us every day.

In this catalog, the ATIME family gets personal, inviting you into their lives to experience the many unique paths on the journey to parenthood—the agony and the comedy, the perfect smiles and the broken hearts. You’ll laugh at the embarrassingly bold meeting my friends and I “arranged” with Rav Avraham Pam, Z”L (do the yungerleit who were standing there remember the day?). You’ll meet Rabbi and Mrs. Shachar and the amazing family they merited after 23 years of marriage.

PERSONAL STORIES Hold onto a tissue for “Dual Citizenship,” a profoundly moving article by Aviva and Daniel, members of an exclusive club of people. After years of relentless battles, this beautiful couple is ready for victory at last!

DUAL CITIZENSHIP

In “Flying Solo,” an ATIME husband with a mischievous sense of humor invents a family to escape the sympathy he expects from a fellow airplane passenger. Will it work? Statistically-speaking, infertility and pregnancy loss are quite common experiences. Yet, for couples that desire children of their own, the numbers only reinforce the doubt and despair. As you browse the unique prize packages ahead, please lend them your hearts, your ears, your support. Dare to dream with them. As I sign these opening words to you, I hear my husband in the dining room distributing Chanukah Gelt to our 3 giggling einiklach. Hakodosh Boruch Hu has shown us, time and again, that dreams do come true.

ALONE. Alone. Alone alone alone. The clacking of the subway-wheels taunted me as I huddled at the edge of the seat, leaning my forehead on the grimy window-pane. We were traveling home from a muchanticipated doctor’s visit…empty-handed. “So sorry,” he had said, blithely crushing our castle of dreams. “I am not equipped to help you. Good luck.” He snapped the Rosen file closed even before we left the room. I resisted the urge to turn around and catch a glimpse of our shattered hopes lying all over his waxed floorboards. Behind us leered the physician’s office carpeted with jagged dream-shards. Before us loomed our empty home. Sitting on that train with the wheels laughing mercilessly at our utter helplessness, I made a promise. We were still groping in the dark, but I pledged that when we would crawl out of this endless black tunnel, we would make sure that no one would feel so alone. No one

train with only disappointment and worry. It was years and many tears later that our promise re-appeared in brilliant color. I was standing before my Shabbos licht. My three beautiful candles. I lit one and then the other, as I had been doing for so many years. And then, as I touched the match to that third wick, our promise burst into flame. I would not forget. Buoyed by enthusiasm, I shared my plans with anyone who cared to listen. The comments came fast and furious. Ridiculous. You are so sweet, Brany. But let’s be realistic… You’re asking for trouble. No one will take you seriously. But we had promised. I was young. I was passionate. And I was determined. Together with Suri Neuman and Blimy Steinberg, two women who shared my vision, I tried to force these nebulous dreams into the confines of reality.

Plans and dreams are one thing, but reality is quite another. And we got our first dose of cold reality before we could even launch our opening initiative. “Our medical conference will raise awareness,” I enthused. “We’ll advertise in all the local circulars and magazines to get the word out.” We pictured overflowing crowds and enthusiastic applause. We wondered how we would deal with inadequate seating…but we needn’t have worried. “Sorry, we can’t accept your ad,” the first magazine-editor brusquely informed us.

Der Yid to question their decision. “Why did you agree to run our advertisement?” My question hung in the air for a long moment. “What’s the problem?” the editor staunchly replied. “Doesn’t every Kittah Aleph Yingele learn that Sarah wasn’t blessed with children?” His concise reply became our catchphrase; the line we used to convince those editors who had balked at our ads. Der Yid printed that first ad. Our vision was up for scrutiny before the public eye,

Forget the crowds. Forget the applause. We couldn’t even get to first base! The topic of infertility was taboo and there was no way to breach that barrier…until Der Yid rescued us from anonymity. “Der Yid took our ad! You are not alone.

GUARDIAN AT THE

GATE

It’s 7:55 am when the call comes in. Mrs. Yehudis Grunwald breathes slowly, smiles encouragingly and adjusts her headset. “Good morning! How can we help you?” Today will not be easy. No day is easy for the executive assistant to Dayan Unger, ATIME’s director of Halacha and Medicine. “Every morning starts with a plan,” Mrs. Grunwald admits, “but when the phone rings for the first time, when an ATIME couple needs to speak, that’s when the agenda is set.” Dayan Chaim Aron Unger is the world’s foremost authority on fertility halacha. His phone rings at all hours—rabbonim, couples, doctors, therapists—and he makes it his business to assist each and every caller. Mrs. Grunwald makes the impossible possible, scheduling ten minute phone appointments, researching case files, contacting specialists, coordinating services.

20 718-WIN-1234 | 718-FAX-1234

Mrs. Yehudis Grunwald ATIME’s office of Halacha and Medicine

Today, a frightened cancer patient wants to preserve his chance at becoming a father. Though not officially a crisis hotline, the sensitive nature of fertility means Rav Unger is more than a poseik. “People are not only calling for an answer. They’re calling for reassurance. For direction. The Rav connects with people in an amazing way.” And while pressing questions are typical—a doctor wondering if a specific procedure is permissible, a couple overwhelmed by a 45-page medical form—often the phone rings, Mrs. Grunwald answers, and, silence. “Some people have the courage to make the call, but simply can’t open their mouths to speak,” she says. The painful news they heard or the profound loneliness they feel is too much to express. “I tell them I am here, I will stay here and I am ready to listen whenever they feel ready to share.” It’s 1:40am and the phone is still ringing. “Dayan Unger doesn’t hold hours,” Mrs. Grunwald says, “he holds hands.”

I were sitting in the doctor’s well-appointed office, as we had done so many times in the past few years. Nothing had changed. The same goldflecked carpeting, ridiculously heavy drapes, and breathtaking Manhattan view. The doctor was still steepling his fingers, clicking his pen and clearing his throat importantly before every sentence. But something was different. Dr. G. was uncomfortable. Downright anxious, in fact. I braced myself for disappointment. Just say it, I mutely urged him. If you think this treatment won’t work for us, we’ll try something else!

arms tightly around myself. Dr. G. was giving me a second passport. He was inviting me into another club. And I didn’t want to go. But reality waits for no one. Within a mere few days, I had learned the language. Daniel and I were fighting on two fronts. We were struggling to maintain our grip on life – my life – while keeping our gaze focused on the battle for a future. “We’ll do everything we can,” the grim-faced oncologist vowed. “We’re going to beat this thing!” “But what about our other battle?” I whispered. In the stark oncology department, where every

months later, I was elated but not surprised.

The doctors rustled their white coats and shook their heads regretfully. “Delusional,” they probably thought. “She’s in denial.”

After the horrors of the past two years, I knew that we would be headed for brighter times. We kept our secret for several exhilarating weeks. I started wandering through the aisles of every children’s boutique I passed. I fingered soft baby

The battle was on. I was shocked at my fragility. A single round of treatment reduced me to a shell of my former self. I was beset by nausea, dizziness and overwhelming weakness. Worst of all was the fear. Will I survive? The doctors were cautiously optimistic. They encouraged us with numbers and statistics, but our gaze was focused elsewhere. We were waiting for the day when we could pick up our first passport and continue traveling towards the future we always dreamed of. After two grueling years, they gave us the green light. “You’re in remission,” they told us. “Congratulations.” I ditched my ‘Big C Passport’ with a sigh of relief. Good riddance, I thought. I’ve had enough of you for several lifetimes.

pen remained painfully silent. “Just as I feared,” he said, scanning the results. “It’s back.” His silence spoke more than words. Tiredly, I retrieved my second passport; my ticket to the Big C Club. Once again, our dreams and fears had enmeshed, one silencing the other. We’re heading out to the battlefield once more, fighting on two fronts. I have dual citizenship, you see. Someday, in the very near future, our Merciful Conductor will allow us to abandon both to the mists of memory. But until then…I speak both languages. Postscript—Aviva speaks: B”H we are once again out of the woods. The doctors have officially proclaimed me in full remission, and we hope to have good news to share in the very near future.

The initial diagnosis gave us room for hope and we immediately launched a course of treatment. It failed. A year later, we mustered our fledgling hopes and tried again.

We were the only ones willing to accept all four siblings and our offer was accepted. Bowled over by the prospect, I called the local Social Services to inquire about the official process involved in adopting four children. At once. Thus began an intricate game of volley-ball between the Social Services Agencies in Albany and Colorado. Each insisted that the ball was in the other court, and we were left stranded in the middle, frantically chasing our dreams. “Contact the Colorado Agency,” Albany insisted. “We need an ICPC (Interstate Compact for

We made no calculations. We tallied no numbers. We simply jumped in, trusting that Hashem would show us the way. “Six months foster-care before adoption,” Albany demanded. “Minimum of one year before adoption,” Colorado countered. Albany rejected the terms of the initial Colorado ICPC package. They would not allow four children to settle in New York without benefits. I tried

They didn’t allow us to contact the children, but we received several charming photos that simply captured our hearts. These children belonged by us. While the states argued and quibbled, we became certified foster-care providers. In April of 2014, we completed ten weeks of foster-care training. We did the home-study, submitted our fingerprints, and passed our FBI background check. Colorado finally capitulated to New York, allowing us to proceed. Mid-June 2014 we were allowed to contact the children, whom we first met via Skype. After our foster-care certification came through, we traveled to Limon, Colorado to meet the children. Our children.

64 718-WIN-1234 | 718-FAX-1234

How can I describe that initial meeting? Our hearts simply melted in the glow of their sweet innocence. We took them on several day trips, and slowly – ever so slowly – the first silky strands of family ties appeared. Several weeks later, on August 6th 2014, the children were brought home to us, accompanied by two case-workers. One of the things that most amaze me about

Our four beautiful children bear an uncanny family resemblance to Leah, which eased our transition in more ways than one. If you would chance upon the Schachar family strolling the streets on a languid Shabbos afternoon, you would see smiles, love and laughter. You would see parents exulting in their precious children, treasuring them as the gifts that they truly are. I would be more than happy to share the knowledge I gained throughout our adoption experience. If you, too, wish to build a family as we did, please feel free to contact me. I patted myself on the back. That was so on target. I often heard my friends complaining about this very topic. Meir just shrugged. He didn’t even turn around to assess the damage. “Next time, you should follow my example,” I advised. “Leave the kids home and travel like a king.” Two points, I applauded myself. Shaya,
