C

Chanukah is an eight day festival celebrating the power of light in a world of darkness.

The story is this: Twenty-one centuries ago, the Syrian-Greeks ruled Judea (now Israel) and decreed that the Jews could not study Torah, observe Shabbat or perform the Bris “circumcision” covenant. It has been explained that the SyrianGreeks were fine with “logical” commandments, but could not stomach these Mitzvot whose only reason was “because G-d says so.” But Jews are all about what G-d says, so they risked their lives defying the decrees. Then, in a succession of obvious miracles, their very small army successfully defeated the SyrianGreeks.

PART II:

The Jews returned to their trashed temple where they found a tiny jar of untouched oil—just enough to relight the Temple’s Menorah candelabrum for a single day.

Though it would take eight days to produce a new supply of oil, they lit what they had. The Menorah stayed lit for eight full days, proving that if G-d can make fire using oil, He can make eight days’ worth of fire using one day’s supply of oil.

In addition to the Mitzva of lighting the Menorah each night, Chanukah customs include eating foods fried in oil (latkes, jelly donuts); playing dreidel (spinning tops); and giving “Chanukah Gelt” money to children. For more info, insights and customs, visit us at boweryjews.com/Chanukah

Of course, G-d orchestrates miracles every day and calls them “natural fortunate events”. On Purim we celebrate these miracles that are hidden as well as Jewish unity.

To recruit, email: israel@boweryjews.com.

The four Mitzva activities of Purim:

 LISTEN to the Megilla—the whole Story of Purim—on Saturday night and again on Sunday Morning.

 GIVE charity to those who truly need it (at least one person who seems destitute!).  SEND

gifts of ready-to-eat food to friends, adding to the joy, unity and celebration.

 EAT & celebrate with family and friends in keeping with the spirit of Purim.

Purim

Grand

Unique about this holiday— compared to, say, Passover or Chanukah—is that G-d’s “Mighty Hand” was not easily seen in the salvation. Instead, a series of fortunate events resulted in a rescue, including a completely unified response by the Jewish people. (Maybe that was an open miracle!)

Are you Jewish and between the ages of 18–26? Have you ever been to Israel? Join Chabad House Bowery’s focused tour of the Holy Land for 10 days of culture, spiritual exploration, and really good pita. Absolutely FREE, fun and unforgettable. For info, visit: boweryjews.com.

Party Saturday Night, March 1

Adar I/Adar II 5774

Purim is the merriest day on the Jewish calendar. It commemorates the salvation of the Jewish people from a plot by Haman, a powerful Persian politician, to “destroy, kill and annihilate” us all.

True, the Exodus from Egypt happened years ago…3325 years

ago. Yet we’re all still slaves in a way—to our worries, our envies, our fears. Luckily, freedom still exists as well, in our break from despair, our passion to give and our willingness to overcome.

Feel, live and celebrate freedom with the Chabad House Bowery family!

Sarah, the kids, and I want to wish you an awesome year. We are so incredibly honored to get to know so many of you and to celebrate Jewish life together. We really believe that authentic Jewish living can be chill, hip, colorful, flavored and accessible, and tailored to each individual in their own way. So come by, find out where you wanna plug in and see what you can offer and what you’ll receive. Most importantly, we’re here for you, for real. This isn’t our job, it’s our life (!) and we feel blessed to have you in it. All the very best, The Korn Family
