Fall Semester 2013
T
he Midrash tells a story of a prince, who while hunting in a forest, saw a child in the distance playing a most heartwarming melody on his flute. He put down his rifle and sat on a tree stump to saturate his soul with the beauty of this melody. Eventually the music ceased, and the mesmerized prince dashed to find the child so that he might hear this beautiful melody if but once more. He searched the forest but the child was nowhere to be found. His heart yearned for this sweet melody and the rest of his days were spent searching for the special tune that he had heard. Embedded deeply in the Jewish soul is an unquenchable thirst for the precious music of Torah knowledge, Jewish family life and spirituality. It has been compared to a spark within our soul just waiting to be ignited.
It is our goal at the Conejo Jewish Academy to find the tune that is music to the ears of each individual and ignite the spark within your soul. I invite you and your family to join us, as we explore our beautiful and rich Jewish heritage and together we will create a most inspiring symphony of music – music for our souls and spirit. Sincerely, Rabbi Moshe D. Bryski, Dean

Caring for a beloved but infirm parent is from the greatest of Mitzvot yet can quite often be a very stressful and painful experience. The pain is multiplied when the ailing parent suffers from Alzheimers or other form of dementia. One of the best therapies for members of “the sandwich generation” is support and empathy from others who are experiencing or have experienced the same ordeal.

The Meaning of the Prayer of “Shema Yisroel” The prayer knows as the “Shema” is a declaration of faith, a pledge of allegiance to One G-d. It is said upon arising in the morning and upon going to sleep at night. It is said when praising G-d and when beseeching Him. It is the first prayer that a Jewish child is taught to say. It is the last words a Jew says prior to death. Join us for a two part series exploring the deeper meaning of this historic affirmation of Judaism’s central creed.

Biblical Stories of the Bible The Passing of Miriam (Sister of Moses) The Passing of the High Priest Ahron (Brother of Moses) The Hitting of the Rock Moses Denied Entry into the Promised Land
The study group will delve into some of the Biblical stories recorded in the Book of Numbers – Portion of Chukat. Have you ever heard the story of Moses hitting a rock when instructed to speak to it? It was this “sin” that brought about the consequence of Moses being denied his life long dream of entering the Promised Land. Did the story make any sense to you? Where was justice? What was the big “sin”? Where is the “love” that G-d claimed He had for Moses? We will study this complex and puzzling story in its original text plus the very emotional passing of the one most beloved characters in the Bible – Ahron the Kohen Gadol (High Priest) and his unique burial. Join us on Wednesday afternoons as we attempt to bring deeper meaning to the stories of the Bible. You are invited to join this study group at any time during the semester.

The Laws of Shabbat An Advanced Course Plus Q & A Sessions
Courses
The Shabbat laws are quite complex, requiring careful study and regular review. At first, Shabbat observance can seem overwhelming but the more one studies about Shabbat and experiences its beauty and tranquility with family and community, the more one begins to appreciate the “gift” that G-d bestowed upon us by giving us the Holy Shabbat. Becoming shomer shabbat (shabbat observant) is a gradual process rather than an overnight transformation. There is a wealth of details, laws and traditions that provide a lifetime of study. Even those who have been keeping Shabbat for years find that there is always more to learn on this subject. This 3 part advanced series on the Laws of Shabbat led by a Halachic Scholar is a not-to-be missed opportunity for couples/individuals who keep (or would like to learn how to keep) a Shomer Shabbat home and lifestyle.

It’s not just about visitation. It’s about friendship. It’s about community. The Sunshine Club is a unique volunteer program under the auspices of Chabad of the Conejo designed to bring cheer and companionship into the lives of seniors all throughout the Conejo Valley. Whether for seniors living on their own, in assisted living facilities or convalescent homes, the Sunshine Club matches up caring friends to be there with and for seniors on a bi-weekly basis – to visit, to assist and to uplift. These special friends share experiences, spend quality time, celebrate special occasions, and create wonderful memories together. Special thanks to If you would like to become a Sunshine Club Volunteer or if you are a senior – or know of a senior – who can benefit from the Sunshine Club, please call Chana or Malka at 818-991-0991 or visit www.MySunshineClub.com
