FALL SEMESTER 2016
EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK “REBBE”, AUTHORED BY RABBI JOSEPH TELUSHKIN In 1994, a few months after his passing, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, the Lubavitcher Rebbe, was posthumously awarded the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest award granted by the American government to a civilian (he is the only rabbi, and only the second clergyman, to have received this honor). The rarely awarded Gold Medal is designated for those “who have performed an achievement that has an impact on American history and culture that is likely to be recognized… long after the achievement.” At the award ceremony, African American congressman John Lewis, the civil right legend and co-sponsor of the award, noted that perhaps the only issue on which he and Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich agreed was the importance of bestowing this medal on the Lubavitcher Rebbe.
The Academy is dedicated to the living legacy of
THE LUBAVITCHER REBBE Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson
Nor was it only Lewis and Gingrich who felt this admiration for the Rebbe. President Ronald Regan, upon receiving letters from the Rebbe, would take them upstairs from the Oval Office to his residence and personally draft his responses. In an April 1982 letter, the president cited words from a proclamation for a National Day of Reflection he was about to issue honoring the Rebbe’s eightieth birthday: “Your work stands as a reminder to us all that knowledge is an unworthy goal unless it is accompanied by moral and spiritual wisdom and understanding.”

Rabbi Yosef Mendelevich In 1970, at age 22, already a veteran of the Jewish Underground, Yosef Mendelevich made news around the world with a daring attempt to escape the Soveit Union with a group of Jews on a small tourist aircraft. Before the group could board the plane, the KGB arrested them all, resulting in the infamous Leningrad Trial which riveted international attention. The defendants exhibited great bravery in court, and the international uproar moderated the death sentences. He was imprisoned for 11 years in the Soviet gulag along with dissident Nathan Sharansky, resisting all attempts to squash his body and soul, and his deepening faith and love for the Promised Land. In 1981, after a worldwide struggle, he was released and immigrated to Israel.

There, a woman enveloped by its living waters and immersed in its sanctity, is transformed to a state of spiritual purity, reaffirming the cycle of life. In Judaism, marriage is a sacred institution and the love between a husband and wife is a pure and sanctified love. It is the keeping of the Mitzvah of Mikvah that creates the holiness of the marital relationship. The course will study the mystical, practical and purifying laws of the Mikvah.
