SCHOLAR-IN-RES ID Delightful, inspiring, traditional Shabbat Dinners and Lectures by Guest Speakers

ON FLOOR SEVENTY-EIGHT On September 11th, 2001, Ari Schonbrun went to his office at Cantor Fitzgerald – the Wall Street firm that occupied the top five floors of Tower One – and he happened to be on the 78th floor changing elevators when the first plane hit. In the midst of the smoke and chaos, Ari found a fellow employee who was terribly burned and who needed his help to walk her down 78 flights of stairs. Of the 662 Cantor employees on the upper floors in the World Trade Center that day, only four survived. Everyone else was killed. Why did they survive? Was it simply luck? Or was it something more?

The Grass is Green on Your Side Too

Rabbi Moshe D. Bryski Wednesdays, 12:30 p.m. Begins Oct. 10 The Academy— Center for Jewish life No Fee

It is written in Ethics of our Fathers, “Who is rich? He who is happy with his lot”. So often we seek happiness and joy by looking over the fence and perceiving our neighbors lot to be the green pastures that would bring us happiness. Judaism teaches us that the path to true joy can only be found if we seek it in the life we each were given. Join us for our popular Lunch ‘N Learn Study Group as we delve into the Tenth Commandment “Thou Shall Not Covet”. You are invited to join this study group at any time during the semester.

I want to believe, but… I FIND IT HARD TO BELIEVE MY ACTIONS REALLY MATTER TO G-D. I PRAY TO G-D, BUT I’VE NEVER HEARD HIM ANSWER. I DON’T UNDERSTAND HOW G-D COULD ALLOW SO MUCH SUFFERING? I STRUGGLE WITH CONTRADICTIONS BETWEEN FAITH AND SCIENCE? I CAN LIVE PERFECTLY WELL WITHOUT G-D: WHY DO I NEED HIM IN MY LIFE? I FIND SOME OF THE VALUES ESPOUSED IN THE TORAH OUT OF TOUCH WITH TODAYS WESTERN PRINCIPLES.

Rabbi Moshe D. Bryski 6 Wednesdays 8 p.m. Oct. 24. 31, Nov. 7, 14, 28, Dec. 12 The Academy – Center for Jewish Life $50.00/$75.00 per couple (includes textbook)

M

ost people, even the most devout, struggle with issues about G-d. We sit in the synagogue during the High Holidays and affirm the essentials of Judaism in theory, but when it comes to trusting G-d with our daily lives, we share a secret, painful fear that God isn’t really looking out for us.

Wrestling with Faith will tackle the “big issues” that keep people from intimate faith with G-d.

Going Kabbalistic The Basics of Jewish Mysticism

“The science of Kabbalah was previously hidden. In our generation, its study is not only permitted, but it is our sacred duty to reveal its ancient discipline” Rabbi Yisroel Levine Thursdays, 12:30 p.m. Begins Oct. 11 The Academy— Center for Jewish life No Fee - Prior Registration Requested

Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi, 18th Century

Kabbalah is a rich tradition of esoteric teachings that have been part of Judaism since antiquity. It offers unparalleled insight into the mysteries of life, reality, and spirituality. Kabbalah penetrates the human psyche and reveals the latent energy that is waiting to be unleashed.

WEEK 1: SOUL FOOD: A SPIRITUAL PERSPECTIVE ON WHAT YOU EAT

We live in a world where people are cooking less and less, yet are fascinated by the art of cooking. What is it about food that so intrigues us and draws us together? How do we uplift our food and eat with more consciousness? WEEK 2-3: MYSTICAL SECRETS ON PRAYER AND MEDITATION

Prayer offers us the opportunity to communicate directly with G-d through a channel of enormous significance and power. The power of sincere prayer can help us overcome stress, anxiety and aimlessness, as we recognize that we each have a unique and close relationship with the Almighty. Proper meaningful prayer soothes our soul and calms our body.

This is an opportunity to dive into the vast sea of the Talmud, the compilation of centuries of legal discussion between the greatest of sages. With its stimulating and mind-sharpening twists of logic, the Talmud represents the ultimate in Jewish scholarship. The study group is instructed by Rabbi Yitzchak Sapochkinsky. His style of teaching the Talmud encourages the students to travel back in time and participate in the debate as if they are sitting in the “houses of study” of the Talmudic Sages.
