THE CONEJO JEWISH ACADEMY INVITES YOU TO A YOM HASHOA FILM PRESENTATION
Irena Sendler, who died 2008 at 98, was a Polish social worker who helped save an estimated 2,500 Jewish children from the Nazis by smuggling them out of the Warsaw Ghetto and giving them false identities. Her dramatic story, including how she was captured and nearly tortured to death and how she managed to preserve the children’s true identities in jars buried under an apple tree, became widely known only in recent years. A group of four Kansas schoolgirls brought her to worldwide attention.

PART 1: NEGOTIATING WITH TERROR In 2011, Israel set 1,027 prisoners free in exchange for the release of Gilad Shalit. More recently, the rise of ISIS and the murders of James Foley and Steven Sutloff and others have forced us to revisit this heart wrenching debate: Should we pay hefty ransoms or release dangerous criminals in exchange for the life and freedom of an innocent hostage? PART 2: TORTURING TO SAVE LIVES In the aftermath of 9/11, the CIA confirmed using waterboarding on several terror suspects for the purpose of gaining intelligence and preventing a future attack. While the evils of terror must be combated, human rights must also be protected. Might such treatment ever be justified?

The Book of Genesis, unlike the other four of the five books of Moses, contain very few laws, yet it is precisely and specifically this book that role models behavior and character traits that were to become the hallmark of the Jewish people. The protagonists of Genesis are astonishingly human; a world away from the heroes and heroines of myth. They are not mighty warriors nor rulers commanding armies and winning legendary victories. They are ordinary people made extraordinary by their willingness to follow G-d.
