CONEJO JEWISH ACADEMY
Winter/Spring Semester 2018
A Visit to the Reagan Presidential Library I recall a tour of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library. One of the exhibits featured a showcase display of many of the gifts the President and First Lady received from heads of state during their tenure at the White House. Stunning shining gifts made of gold, silver, crystals, and precious stones, were on display behind the glass of a beautiful decorative showcase. As it was explained to us, the President may not take these gifts with him after his presidency, but they remain the property of the U.S. Government. Their only usage is to remain on display, so that we can marvel at the splendor and beauty of the gifts from a distance. It dawned on me - “what a shame?” Such precious pieces, such priceless gifts and all that is gained is a moment of grandeur from a passing visitor in a museum. We, the Jewish people, were given an extremely precious and priceless gift. This gift came from the Head of all States - the King of all Kings - G-d Al-Mighty Himself. He presented us with the Torah, the greatest gift of all time, on Mt. Sinai some 3,330 years ago. However, unlike the gifts in the showcase at the Presidential Library, G-d allows us - no - rather wants us to use this gift. To enjoy it. To gain from it. To find purpose and meaning in life from it. And to be a “light unto the nations” through its teachings. This was and is the purpose of G-d granting us this gift of all gifts. I invite you to join us for our winter and spring semesters and explore new horizons. Let’s take the Torah out of the “ancient artifact” showcase of the museum and bring it to living color in our day to day lives. Sincerely, Rabbi Moshe D. Bryski Dean

ON THE MAP tells the against-all-odds story of Maccabi Tel Aviv’s 1977 European Championship, which took place at a time when the Middle East was still reeling from the 1973 Yom Kippur War, the 1972 Olympic massacre at Munich, and the 1976 hijacking of an Air France flight from Tel Aviv. Through the of lens of sports, ON THE MAP presents a much broader story of how one team captured the heart of a nation amidst domestic turmoil and the global machinations of the Cold War.

Defying the Nazis: The Sharps’ War is an account of a daring rescue mission that occurred on the precipice of World War II. It tells the story of Waitstill & Martha Sharp, a Unitarian minister and his wife from Wellesley, Massachusetts, who left their children behind in the care of their parish and boldly committed to multiple life-threatening missions in Europe. “Faith is not the absence of reason, it is a skill in its own right, which, when cultivated, allows us to experience the ultimate.” The Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson Human beings have many faculties at their disposal. We have a brain to process information, emotions that move us, and intuition that guides us. We have our sensory tools of sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch. So where does faith fit in? How we live our day to day lives with faith? How can we invite G-d to be part of daily experiences?
