Exploring our Heritage

CONEJO JEWISH ACADEMY | FALL SEMESTER 2015

A Message From Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks Former Chief Rabbi of Britain and the Commonwealth & Noted Author For Jews, education is not just what we know. It’s who we are. No people ever cared for education more. Our ancestors were the first to make education a religious command, and the first to create a compulsory universal system of schooling. The Egyptians built pyramids, the Greeks built temples, and the Romans built amphitheaters. Jews built schools. They knew that to defend a country you need an army, but to defend a civilization you need education. So Jews became the people whose heroes were teachers, whose citadels were schools, and whose passion was study and the life of the mind. Jewish education and Jewish learning is not only our heritage and history. It is also the single most important factor that will determine and define the Jewish future. Education counts for more in the long run than wealth or power or privilege. Put simply, those who know, grow. There are a few organizations better qualified than Chabad to make this Jewish Academy a success. By reaching out to all Jews from all backgrounds in love, Chabad has lit the flame of Yiddishkeit in countless hearts and helped to light up the world.

In a day and age when attitudes toward just about every moral and social issue seem to be changing as rapidly as the latest version of the smartphone, are there still core values and ideals we can point to as being inherent to Western Civilization, or has that ship long sailed?

Book Signing of Dennis Prager’s New Book “The Ten Commandments – Still The Best Moral Code” Following the Lecture

DENNIS PRAGER is a radio and television personality whose radio show is heard across the country in national syndication. The Los Angeles Times wrote that Dennis Prager is “an amazingly gifted man and moralist whose mission in life has been crystallized - ‘to get people obsessed with what is right and wrong’”.

WOULD YOU RISK EVERYTHING — YOUR FUTURE, YOUR CITIZENSHIP, EVEN YOUR LIFE — TO HELP A BROTHER IN NEED? In 1948, just three years after the liberation of Nazi death camps, a group of Jewish American pilots answered a call for help. In secret and at great personal risk, they smuggled planes out of the U.S., trained behind the Iron Curtain in Czechoslovakia and flew for Israel in its War of Independence. As members of Machal – “volunteers from abroad” – this ragtag band of brothers not only turned the tide of the war; they also embarked on personal journeys of discovery and renewed Jewish pride.

IN AN AGE WHEN SOCIETY’S VALUES ARE RAPIDLY CHANGING and are constantly called into question, many people are searching for a more fixed, permanent value system that can provide an anchor for identifying right from wrong. The goal of this course is to give the Jewish response to some of the moral and ethical issues of today and to demonstrate Judaism has a legitimate response and approach relating to every area of life.

“There are gates in heaven that cannot be opened except by melody and song.” —Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi, Founder of Chabad

SO MUCH OF CHASSIDIC LIFE IS EXPRESSED THROUGH JOY AND SONG. Did you ever notice that so many of the Chassidic melodies (called a Niggun) have no words? What may seem as mere sounds of “ay-ya-ya-ya” are in reality the highest forms of communication - for it is the melody itself that expresses the soulful prayer, gratitude or spiritual ecstasy. Join us for our inaugural two part series of Once Upon A Niggun. Participants will first learn about the composer, the meaning of the particular niggun and then learn the melody. You need not be gifted with a melodic voice to enjoy this course.
