Growing from the Ground Up When it all began, thirteen years ago,
Chabad of Newport Beach was primarily seen as a humble organization where people could feel at home attending a variety of adult education programs or prayer services. But it soon became apparent to all that Chabad was more — much more — than that. The Center has blossomed into a multifaceted educational, outreach, special needs, and social service organization serving a constituency well beyond those who regularly attend its programs. It has become a vibrant and dynamic part of the wider Jewish and the special needs community in Orange County.

The Center is not what you expect it to be. It’s what you want it to be.

Building a facility for all of us — takes each of us. Our faith can move mountains. Our unity can move generations. When we join together as a people, we find comfort and strength. Chabad of Newport Beach creates an atmosphere which welcomes people of diverse backgrounds and beliefs, and fosters an open and personal Jewish experience. The Center is a home away from home for so many who enter its doors. It’s where we embrace and enhance our connection to Jewish life. Just as we are bound by faith and culture we share the responsibility to create an environment in which our Jewish heritage will thrive. We must unite in our giving to build a place where all of us, including those with special needs, can gather as a community – for holidays and life-cycle events, cultural activities and social gatherings. The Center’s goal is that anyone who walks in off the street should feel like they’ve always belonged. That’s why we don’t have membership at Chabad. Because there isn’t anyone who isn’t a member.

The Complete Jewish Experience
Holiday Celebrations
Library
At Chabad, all Jewish holidays are community affairs in every sense. Over a thousand people attend Chabad’s High Holiday services. Many more join in pride and solidarity for its public Menorah lightings at Fashion Island and other events. A lively spirit of story and song captivates young and old at grand Purim extravaganzas, Community Passover Seders and Friday Night Dinners.
One void in the Orange County Jewish community that will now be filled is an extensive library of Jewish books, periodicals and audio/ visual materials for lending and research. Covering a broad range of Jewish fields of study—from ancient writings to contemporary poetry, from Genesis to the Talmudic era, from the Holocaust to modern-day Israel; this library will become a vital resource for parents, children, teachers and students from all walks of life.
Adult Education The Jewish Learning Institute is recognized as one of the most innovative and premier adult education programs in Orange County. Its catalogues of classes and workshops offer subject matter ranging from the historical to the practical, the mystical to the philosophical. JLI’s students tend to come from all segments of the community, arousing broad-based interest in Judaic scholarship and a passion for deeper knowledge and understanding. The Center’s lecture series feature some of the greatest thinkers and speakers in the academic, political and sociological arenas on the circuit today.

Youth programs
Senior Center Judaism places great emphasis on the veneration and care due our elders. Chabad’s Senior Citizen Programs are designed to not only alleviate the loneliness to which seniors are often subjected, but more-so, to enable our elderly to reclaim their rightful place at the head of the table. In addition to in-house social and educational programs catering to the elderly, Chabad goes out to the local residential retirement facilities and nursing homes—often with groups of singing and smiling children—to share the inspiration and spirit of Shabbat and the Holidays with those who need it, and well deserve it, the most.

Mommy and Me, Jewish Story Time, and Hebrew School programs have a distinctive way of kindling a child’s curiosity about their culture and heritage from the earliest of ages. Chabad’s Living Legacy Program translates age-old Jewish rituals into hands-on projects that are educational and fun. The “Shofar Factory”, “Olive Oil Press”, “Model Matzah Bakery” and “Torah Factory” enable children to discover Jewish practice in the most stimulating and meaningful way of all; they experience it.

Community Outreach
Whether visiting the sick or the incarcerated, counseling the troubled, comforting the bereaved or providing for the needy, Chabad opens its doors and its hearts to those in crisis or distress. Be it a helping hand, a comforting shoulder or a timely referral, Chabad discreetly dispenses love, wisdom and financial support to all who reach out for it.
Chabad does not wait for people to walk through its doors to get them involved. It goes out and brings the joys of tradition to the community via creative outreach programs. Chabad’s outreach endeavors have undoubtedly enhanced Jewish life in Orange County.

The Friendship Circle has been a leader in changing the community’s mindset about children and young adults with special needs, from denial – to acceptance – to integration – to celebration. And now with the new Center we will be creating a facility to help children, teens and adults with special needs reach their potential.

Today The Friendship Circle is one of the fastest growing organizations in Orange County and its wide array of innovative programming promotes a greater awareness and understanding of both the unique needs and the unique gifts of those with special needs, and encourages respect and empathy for those facing difficult challenges. By integrating the wisdom of professionals and the energetic spirit of teenage volunteers, The Friendship Circle brings out the best from within all of those involved. It has been found that by utilizing the gift of friendship, the 240 young volunteers succeed in reaching the children in ways that many forms of therapy do not. Furthermore, the program has had a profound effect on the teenagers themselves – instilling within them the values of giving and gratitude. The Friendship Circle envisions a world in which people with special needs and their families will experience acceptance, inclusion and friendship as valued members of society. Today, we are making this vision a reality.

Friendship circle programs: Friends at Home
Sunday Circle
The acclaimed hallmark of The Friendship Circle is Friends at Home, which has teenage volunteers spending quality time with children with special needs in the environment the kids are most comfortable and familiar with: their own homes. Finally, enthusiastic play dates for these most deserving kids! A unique bond is established between the volunteers and their special friends. Some volunteers have even chosen to attend college locally so as not to sever the bond that’s grown between them and their special friend. Parents speak glowingly of how the children look forward to these visits; how they excitedly sit at the window on “Friends at Home Day” in anticipation of their buddies showing up at the doorstep - not to mention the welcome break and joy it brings the rest of the family.
Volunteers and staff of The Friendship Circle come together for a wide array of entertaining, recreational and enriching activities. As moms and dads drop their children off in capable hands, they watch with pride as their children gleefully race toward the surprises that await them inside. The program allows the parents to then go off and enjoy some muchneeded time for themselves.
Young Adults Circle Designed to integrate special needs young adults with life skills they can use on a daily basis. The everyday life and social skills training is tailored to the individual’s special and unique needs. Activities involve learning to cook and shop, nights out with the group, and more, teaching skills while simultaneously incorporating laughter, fun and friendships that create memories that last a lifetime.
All Friendship Circle programs, events and services are offered free of charge.
