YEAR OF HAKHEL

Unity Through Torah

CONEJO JEWISH ACADEMY | WINTER/SPRING SEMESTER 2016

YEAR OF HAKHEL

Unity Through Torah

The Mitzvah of Hakhel, as ordained in the Torah, is that at the end of every seven years, immediately after the Sabbatical year, all Jews had to make their pilgrimage to Jerusalem. There, they would be gathered – the men, the women and the children – and the king would read sections of the Torah to stimulate their observance of Mitzvot and strengthen them in their faith. This Jewish year is a Hakhel year – “A Year of Gatherings”. In previous such years, the Lubavitcher Rebbe called on us to maintain this beautiful tradition by initiating gatherings throughout the year – in our homes, offices and communities, to join in unity and pursue lofty and spiritual goals. Let us gather together in small or large groups to talk, to study, to learn, to sing, to pray, to join in one unifying voice – and connect with our higher Divine calling. Urge your friends to join you at a study group, a course, or a lecture. Let us create a massive ripple effect of unity and goodwill, uniting people in a powerful wave of positive energy.

YEAR OF HAKHEL

SPECIAL

You will note that for this special “Hakhel” semester, a reduced fee or no fee at all, has been implemented for many courses as an added incentive for you and your friends to join with us in this “Year of Unity”.

Sincerely, Rabbi Moshe D. Bryski

Rabbi Marvin Tokayer “The Fugu Plan” was a top-secret plan to create an “Israel in Asia” under Japanese control by offering displaced European Jews a safe haven in Manchuria in return for the financial and technical skills they would bring to this outpost of the Japanese Empire. Although this so-called “Fugu Plan” unfortunately did not materialize due to Japan’s entry into the Tripartite Pact with Nazi Germany and Italy in 1940, Japan was instrumental in the survival of thousands of Jews (including the fathers of our very own Rabbis Moshe Bryski and Yitzchak Sapochkinsky) who were issued Japanese transit visas and given wartime refuge in Asia. Rabbi Marvin Tokayer served as the Rabbi to the Far East from 19681976 and has authored two books on the history of Judaism in the Orient, “The Fugu Plan” and his most recent “Pepper, Silk and Ivory”.

Dovid Efune

Editor-in-Chief of the The Algemeiner - The Fastest Growing Jewish Media Outlet in America

It’s become a common trope these days: A terror attack takes place in Israel, but news outlets around the world write, “Palestinian killed by Israeli forces,” failing to mention the attack or its Jewish victims. Articles and newscasts continuously show their media bias against Israel. It’s time to fight back! Join us for a talk by Dovid Efune, an outspoken proponent of Israel in the media today. He is regularly interviewed on major TV channels including CBS, CNBC, Fox News, CNN, i24 News, Real News TV, NY1 and Huffington Post Live. The Algemeiner is a major international online news destination serving as a strong, independent voice of truth on behalf of the Jewish people and Israel in the media.

FILM

A debate rages over the credibility of the Bible. Most archaeologists today have concluded that there is no evidence that the Exodus of Israelite slaves from Egypt ever happened. Filmmaker Timothy Mahoney faces a crisis of faith: “Is this foundational event of the Bible really just a myth?” He embarks on a 12 year journey around the world to search for answers. The result is the most in-depth archaeological investigation into the Exodus ever captured on film. Join us as we screen the film “Patterns of Evidence: The Exodus”.

In October 1942, five Ukrainian Jewish families seek asylum underground to evade being caught by pursuing Nazis. They remain hidden below for nearly a year and a half- the longest uninterrupted underground survival occurrence ever recorded. Their harrowing story is unearthed by accident when cave explorer Chris Nicola stumbles upon remnants left behind by the cave dwellers. Through extensive research and determination, Nicola locates a few of those survivors and has them share their incredible story of strength and perseverance.

Living Joyously

A 2 Part Course on Personal Spiritual Development CLASS 1 | FORGIVENESS: LETTING GO

Forgiveness is a way of letting go of the past. Anger, rage and resentment weigh us down; forgiveness lets us cast off those burdens and be the people we really want to be. Learn how forgiveness can be the greatest gift you can make – to yourself. CLASS 2 | HARMONY: LIVING WITH OTHERS

Someone once asked the Alter Rebbe, the founder of the Chabad Chassidim, “Which is greater: love of G-d or love of your fellow man?”. Without hesitation he answered “Love of your fellow man, for then you are loving that which your Beloved G-d Almighty loves.” We bring joy to our lives when we bring joy to others.
