O
ne of my many fascinations in our line of work is the mystery of why some stories stand the test of time, and others don’t. For example, the longest-running play in Broadway history is Life With Father. It’s a perfectly charming script, but it feels like a relic from another time. And that’s how it’s generally considered- a museum piece, an interesting bit of trivia. On the other hand, there are plays which manage to tap into something essential about who we are, what we need from each other, and what we’re afraid to ask for. Which brings us to Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.
I
n the Pollitt family, Tennessee Williams presents a group of people who are all terrified of isolation- of being ignored, or forgotten entirely. It drives Brick to drink, compels Big Daddy to push everyone away, causes Maggie and Big Mama to grow desperate, and leaves room for Mae and Gooper’s plotting and scheming. The genius of this play is that there are no true villains- just a group of people who all feel they’ve been left to their own devices, with no one to trust. And that’ll bring out the worst in anybody.
S
o the journey we take on this hot summer night in the Mississippi Delta is the perilous path that can lead you to an unexpected ally. All anybody in the Pollitt family really craves is the assurance that someone is on their side. In watching Brick and Maggie come to what he calls “some temporary agreement,” we can dare to imagine relief from even the most seemingly impossible of circumstances. That’s a hopeful impulse audiences could relate to sixty years ago, and it’s no less relevant now.

Celebrating Ron Andersons call to Honor the Past, Acknowledge the Present and Salute the Future. The Salutations Fund is an endowment that has been created to protect and strengthen the Springer forever. Through this fund, lovers of the Springer Opera House may establish long-term legacies or celebrate, memorialize and honor individuals in an enduring way. Unlike the Springer Society, which is an annual fund that supports Springer operations and programs in the current season, the Salutations Fund is a way for donors to acknowledge friends, artists, loved ones, community leaders, teachers or others in a personal way that protects the Springer far into the future.
