2021/22 SEASON
SPRINGEROPERAHOUSE.ORG
“Resurgence. Renaissance. Reinvention. Rebirth. Reawakening. They all add up to one thing: The Springer is back. But not where we left off. We are better. We are revitalized, renewed, and on an exhilarating upward trajectory. The challenges and threats of the recent past have produced a stronger, more agile, more inspired theatre company. A year ago, we faced the unknown and the very real fear that we might not be able to conquer the beast that threatened us. But rather than crawl into a cave and hope that the monster passed us by, we decided to fight. We performed on stage, online, and outdoors. We stayed at work. And you stuck with us. You were patient, forgiving, and generous. Over 9,000 people attended live theatre at the Springer last season, and another 1,000 watched live stream performances of our shows. I’m happy to report that we weathered the storm, protected our precious National Historic Landmark theatre, and kept everyone safe. And, my dear friends, we did it together - as a community. Five, ten, twenty years from now, you can look back and proudly say, “I was part of that. We made history. We saved a great American theatre.” We are still processing it all, but it is clear that we have emerged from this calamity grateful – but changed. The Springer’s essential role in the community and the world is more evident today than it was in February of 2020. We are more devoted than ever to telling the great stories of our community and our nation and celebrating an ever-wider variety of artistic voices. The Springer’s 150th Anniversary Season is one of celebration, joy, and discovery. We hope you will join us on this historic adventure. We Are Close. Prepare to get Closer. Paul Pierce Producing Artistic Director

In May 1870, Francis Joseph Springer, a French immigrant and successful grocer, broke ground on a new European style opera house on the former site of one of his grocery stores in downtown Columbus, Georgia. The Springer Opera House opened its doors on February 21, 1871, for its inaugural event, a benefit concert for Trinity Episcopal Church. Legendary artist including Ma Rainey, W.C. Fields, Oscar Wilde, Edwin Booth, Will Rogers, Ethel Barrymore, Agnes de Mille, Hal Holbrook, and Burt Reynolds have graced the Springer stage. By 1896, more than six million admisions were recorded! Today the Springer is one of only seven producing theatres in the country operating in a National Historic Landmark. As a producing theatre, every part of a Springer production - from auditioning and hiring of the cast, to designing and construction of sets, costumes, and props, lighting and sound are functions of the staff of the Springer.
