issouri has had the title of being The Cave State for many years. With over 7,000 caves documented in the state’s karst topography, tourists and locals can explore Missouri’s most beautiful and extensive underground caverns. One of Missouri’s most well-known caves is Fantastic Caverns. As the only ridethrough cave in North America, riders can sit back and relax in the big red trams while the cave guides stop throughout the cave and explain how each of its formations came to be. The discovery of the cave dates back to 1862 when a farmer’s dog found its way to the entrance. Afterward, a group of 12 women first explored the cave. From being an underground speakeasy in the 1920s during Prohibition, to a venue for country music shows in the cave’s constant 60-degrees climate, it provides the perfect acoustics for musicians and singers.
Native Americans who inhabited the area before settlement. The cave features a breathtaking 11-story arch that leads you back in time. Through the tour, view 200-year-old cave drawings, fossils and rare cave life such as crayfish, endangered blind cave salamanders and multiple species of bats. The cave is open year-round for guided half-mile walking tours and is accessible to strollers, wheelchairs and mobility scooters.
Guided tours at Talking Rocks Cavern showcase beautiful formations.
In the fall, explore the cave by candlelight with Smallin’ Civil War Cave’s exclusive lantern tours. And for the adventurous, schedule a wild tour that will take you beyond the walking path into the depths of the cave. Add Giboney Cave at Doling Park in north Springfield, Marvel Cave at the Silver Dollar City theme park near Branson and others in the area, and there are plenty of subterranean adventures to explore.

At National Tiger Sanctuary, home to several exotic felines, only guided walking tours are allowed with feeding tours and other special tours as options. During the tours, guides provide information about each feline and what brought them to the sanctuary, such as owners that no longer wanted the animals or rescues from situations where the animals’ lives were in danger or had poor quality of life. Along with tigers, the sanctuary has African lions, mountain lions, leopards and pumas, and don’t be surprised to see domestic animals, such as dogs and cats, on the grounds.
Rutledge-Wilson Farm Park allows kids to explore the rich agricultural heritage of the Ozarks thanks to a red barn that’s home to hoofed livestock, such as miniature horses and donkeys, goats and sheep. A cattle barn houses beef and dairy animals. Fowl and other livestock are also on hand for hands-on experiences. Be sure to check out Irene the Dairy queen, a life-sized fiberglass bovine that allows visitors the opportunity to see what it’s like to milk a cow.
The Springfield-Conservation Nature Center provides opportunities to see native species in their natural habitats. Walk the trails for a chance to see white-tailed deer, turkeys, squirrels, insects, reptiles, fish and more. Bright red cardinals, yellow finches, wild turkeys and other birds can be seen eating from the wildlife viewing room at the Visitor Center.

Springfield’s Rich
HISTORY
S
pringfield’s history began long before the city was established. Prior to white settlement, the area was inhabited by the Osage, Delaware, Kickapoo and other Native American tribes who moved out of the area after white settlement began. In 1818, the first permanent settlement of a white family in southwest Missouri was established. In 1829, John Polk Campbell and his brother carved their initials in an ash tree with the intention of returning to the area to settle, an act considered to be the founding of Springfield. Before the Campbells returned, William Fulbright and his family moved to the area and settled in 1830 at Fulbright Spring, on what is now College Street just off Park Central Square. Soon after, Campbell and others began settling in the area and in 1838, the city was incorporated. Why the city was named Springfield is unknown. Some speculate it was because of the springs in the area and others think it was named after other cities bearing the same name to the east. Here are some of the notable events in the city’s history.
Trail of Tears As Springfield was being settled, other parts of the country were making history that would touch the city. In 1830, President Andrew Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act and Native American tribes were forced to leave their homeland in a series of treks
Reenactors occasionally bring the Battle of Wilson’s Creek to life with demonstrations and other activities.
that became known as the Trail of Tears due to the thousands of deaths that occurred during the forced marches. The Trail of Tears took multiple routes across the country, including one that was traveled by seven or eight detachments of about 1,000 people each that went through Springfield. Traces of the trail can still be found in and around Springfield.
Civil War On August 10, 1861, army units clashed near Wilson’s Creek in the first major battle west of the Mississippi River, involving about 5,400 Union troops and 12,000 Confederates. General Nathaniel Lyon was killed, the first Union general to die in combat. The Confederates were victorious. Union troops fell back to Lebanon, then Rolla, and regrouped. When they returned to Springfield, the Confederates had withdrawn. The battle led to increased military activity in Missouri and set the stage for the Battle of Pea Ridge in 1862. The National Park Service designated Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield in 1960. The 1,750-acre battlefield stands as one of the most historically pristine battle sites in the country. For two years following the Battle of Wilson’s Creek, possession of the city seesawed. Then in January 1863, Confederate forces advanced toward the town square and the Battle of Springfield began. As evening approached, the Confederates withdrew. The next morning, the Confederates left town and the city stayed under Union control until the end of the war.
A telegram sent from the Colonial Hotel in Springfield, Missouri, on April 30, 1926, first proposed the Route 66 designation.

The Wild West Era
Young Brothers Massacre
In the wake of the Civil War, Springfield helped give birth to the Wild West era. In July 1865, the town square was the site of the nation’s first quick-draw shootout. Following a poker game in the Lyon House, Davis Tutt “Wild Bill” Hickok claimed “Wild Bill” Hickok owed him money and took his pocket watch as collateral. Tutt claimed he would wear it in public to show that Hickok didn’t pay his debts. The next day from 75 yards away, Tutt fired a shot at Hickok, barely missing his head. Hickok fired back and killed Tutt with a bullet through the heart. The event made nationwide news. You can find markers in the streets where each man stood during the incident.
On Jan. 2, 1932, police raided a farm in search of outlaws Harry Young and his brother, Jennings, resulting in what would be known for decades as the worst massacre of law officers in the nation. As officers arrived, a gunfight began and in less than an hour, six of seven officers were killed. The brothers escaped, making their way to Houston, Texas, where three days after the massacre, they shot each other when police moved in to capture them.
A Heinous Lynching Park Central Square is the site of the lynchings of three innocent black men – Will Allen, Fred Coker and Horace Duncan – the night before Easter in 1906. Duncan and Coker had been arrested as suspects in the alleged rape of a white woman but were released after their employer said they were at work the night the woman was attacked. After an angry crowd began gathering, the men were detained again, reportedly for their own safety. The mob broke into the jail, forcing Duncan and Coker to walk to Park Central Square, where they were hanged from a structure that supported streetcar wires. The mob then returned to the jail and did the same to Allen, who had no connection to Duncan or Coker.

In 1953, one of the city’s strangest events occurred. A hooded cobra, a venomous snake not native to North America, was killed near a pet shop downtown and 10 more were killed shortly thereafter. The event made national headlines and the cobra made its way onto the city seal. It wasn’t until 1988 when the source of the snakes was discovered. A man, who was 14 in 1953, revealed he had released the snakes from a crate on the pet shop’s front porch because he was angry with the shop owner over fish that died the day he purchased them.

Birthplace of Route 66
1955 - Ozark Jubilee begins airing
Officially recognized as the birthplace of Route 66, it was in Springfield on April 30, 1926, that officials first proposed the name of the new Chicago-to-Los Angeles highway. In 1938, Route 66 became the first completely paved transcontinental highway in America stretching from the Great Lakes to the Pacific Coast. Explorers coming through Springfield can choose from two original routes: the colorful downtown area, site of the city’s square and historic events; or bypass the city on the north side. Traces of the Mother Road are still visible along Kearney Street, Glenstone Avenue, College and St. Louis streets and on Missouri 266 to Halltown.
1963 - Springfield-style Cashew Chicken invented 1970 - Battlefield Mall opened The Ozark Jubilee was broadcast live from the Jewell Theater in downtown Springfield.
The Ozark Jubilee The first national country music show on television was broadcast by ABC from Springfield from 1955 until 1960. The show is credited with popularizing country music and featured well-known performers, including Red Foley, Speedy Haworth, Brenda Lee, Porter Wagoner and Slim Wilson. While these are things that put Springfield in the news spotlight, there are many others that shaped the city’s culture, industry and landscape into the beautiful city it is today. We invite you to explore the city and enjoy her many assets.

Walk the trail of Springfield’s
African-American Heritage S
pringfield’s rich African-American heritage is becoming easier to explore thanks to markers being installed at various locations in midtown and downtown neighborhoods. The developing Springfield-Greene County African-American Heritage Trail is comprised of 20 sites dedicated to the area’s African-American history. At each site, a descriptive plaque has been placed or will be placed in the future. Silver Springs Park The first marker was designated during the annual Park Day Reunion at Silver Springs Park, 1100 N. Hampton Ave., in August 2018. Silver Springs, Springfield’s only public park open to black residents during segregation, was established in 1918 on land owned by Springfield school superintendent Jonathan Fairbanks, who died the previous year. Fairbanks opened his home to black residents frightened by the lynchings of three black men on Park Central Square in 1906. The Park Day Reunion dates to 1952 when Gerald Brooks, a park supervisor and a teacher at Springfield’s former Lincoln School, and Robert Wendell Duncan, also a park supervisor, started a day of games and sports events for young African-American residents at Silver Springs. Park Days now includes a parade, beauty pageant, concerts and a picnic. It provided the backdrop for the 1998 film “Park Day” by director Sterling Macer, Jr., who grew up in Springfield. Timmons Hall (formerly Timmons Temple) was moved to the park in 2019 and restored. Built in 1932, Timmons Temple was considered an anchor for the area’s African-American community for decades. It now serves as an events facility in the park it overlooked for nearly 90 years.
Park Central Square A marker on the southeast corner of Park Central Square commemorates the site of the heinous lynchings of three innocent black men – Will Allen, Fred Coker and Horace Duncan – the night before Easter in 1906. Duncan and Coker were arrested as suspects in the alleged rape of a white woman but were released after their employer said they were at work the night the woman was attacked. After an angry crowd began gathering, the men were detained again, reportedly for their own safety.
Silver Springs Park is home to the annual Park Day Reunion attended by hundreds each year in August.
The mob broke into the jail, forcing Duncan and Coker to walk to Park Central Square, where they were hanged from a structure that supported streetcar wires. The mob then returned to the jail and did the same to Allen, who had no connection to Duncan or Coker.
shelter in the chapel’s basement while male church members guarded the building. The building was heavily damaged by fires in 1915 and 1935 but was rebuilt both times. Five members of the choir formed The Philharmonics, a singing group that went on to regional and national fame.
Historic Church Quadrangle An area known as “church square” at Tampa Street and Washington Avenue is home to a third marker noting two historic black churches.
Pitts Chapel United Methodist Church was constructed in 1865 after an arsonist burned the log cabin church along Jordan Creek. Fleming McCullah donated the land for the church that also housed the Freedmen’s Bureau School and later the public school for black children. Edgar Pitts was the pastor of the chapel three times after the Civil War and when he died in 1889, the church was renamed Pitts Chapel. In 1911, the congregation built a new church on the corner of Benton Avenue and Pine Street (now Tampa Street).
Gibson Chapel Presbyterian Church was formed as the First Negro Cumberland Presbyterian Church in 1865 by a freed slave named Rev. Peter Lair (later changed to Lear.) In 1891, a new brick church was built at Washington Avenue and Pine Street (now 536 E. Tampa St.). The church was renamed Gibson Chapel after the death of Rev. H. A. Gibson, who worked tirelessly to get the new structure erected. After the lynching in 1906 of three innocent black men on the public square, many families sought

L
ong before white settlers began arriving in southwest Missouri, Native American tribes called the forested hills and plains of the Ozarks home. Archaeological evidence of native people has been found to date back as far as 8000 B.C., including sites within what are now Springfield city limits. The first historical records of Osage tribes in the area date to the late 1600s, and the Osage were known to live in the area until the 1800s. Other tribes include the Delaware who began emigrating to Missouri because white settlers in the eastern part of the country pressured Native Americans to leave. Other tribes also lived in the area, including Kickapoo, Shawnee, Piankashaws, Peoria and Weas. As the white population grew, Native Americans continually were forced out of their homelands in the east with the most notable push occurring when President Andrew Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act in 1830. Over the next several years, about 60,000 Native Americans were forced to leave their homelands for reservations in other parts of the country - primarily Oklahoma - over what became known as the Trail of Tears due to thousands of deaths that occurred during the forced marches. The Trail of Tears, a National Historic Trail, took several routes from east to west across the country through Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma and Tennessee. The route through Missouri included groups that came through Springfield. Portions of the trail can still be seen in the area, including at Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield, the Trail of Tears
Portions of the Trail of Tears in Springfield are maintained by the Ozark Greenways Trails Network.

Another completed segment that parallels the Trail of Tears begins at Nathanael Greene/Close Memorial Park and continues south to Battlefield Road. This half-mile segment is paved. Access the paved portion of the trail from the South Creek Greenway trail at Nathanael Greene Park. Please note there is only neighborhood access to the natural surface trail section and parking is limited.
In 2020, the City of Battlefield was awarded a grant to add 1,400 linear feet to the Trail of Tears Greenway within Battlefield city limits.
Learn more about the area’s Native American inhabitants at The History Museum on the Square, 154 Park Central Square, where a permanent exhibit is dedicated to the history of the people who first lived in the Ozarks. People participating in the National Park Service Trail of Tears passport program can get passports stamped at the museum. Though portions of the trail that are available to the public are disconnected, efforts are underway by Ozark Greenways to make part of the Trail of Tears, and its cultural and historical significance, more accessible with a planned trail corridor beginning at Ewing Sports Complex at Bennett Street and Scenic Avenue and traveling south to Cloverdale Street. Future on-street connections will connect the trail to the city hall and city park in Battlefield.

Wilson’s Creek
National Battlefield
A New Visitor Center features the finest collection of trans-Mississippi Civil War artifacts in the national Park Service W
ilson’s Creek National Battlefield, one of six national parks in Missouri, is a perfect stop for an entertaining and educational experience. Fought on August 10, 1861, the Battle of Wilson’s Creek was a pivotal battle in Missouri and the second major battle of the Civil War. When the smoke cleared, more than 2,500 Union and Confederate soldiers were killed, wounded or missing in five hours of intense fighting. The National Park Service, recognizing the significance of the battle, designated Wilson’s Creek Na-

tional Battlefield in 1960. The 1,750-acre park, just southwest of Springfield, remains greatly unchanged and stands as one of the most pristine battle sites in the country. A $3 million remodeling project at the visitor center in 2020 transformed the entrance and added 1,500 square feet of exhibit space. A new addition is a large weapons display that showcases 80 percent of the park’s edged weapons and firearms that transformed the outcome of the war, including a rare 1860 Henry Rifle. The new visitor center and museum will open in phases through winter 2020 into spring 2021. Other than the visitor center, the road through the park allows visitors to explore the battlefield at their own pace. Walking trails lead to various battle sites, including Bloody Hill, the Historic John Ray House and the Edwards Cabin. Concerts, special events and educational presenta-

Each collection of sculptures is in place from April to February of the next year, giving patrons something new to see each cycle. The sculptures add to the city’s heritage, character and sense of place and diversity, adding to the pride of place and a sense of identity. Public art rejuvenates public spaces by transforming them into destinations, and Sculpture Walk Springfield plays a major role in doing just that. Springfield’s street art scene is incredibly diverse with over 40 street art pieces hidden throughout the city’s most iconic stops such as Historic Commercial Street, downtown, Farmer’s Park, Chesterfield Village and area businesses. Notable artists include Andrea Ehrhardt, Samantha Cox, The Wolken Brothers, Susan Sommer, Jorge Ortiz, Emily J. Million and others who continue to paint their masterpieces on Springfield’s canvas. For an indoor art experience, The Springfield Art Museum is the city’s oldest cultural institution intent on continuing a legacy of art appreciation, preservation and education that began more than 90 years ago when the museum was incorporated. The museum’s special collections include American water media, art of the midwest and printmaking. In addition to a primary focus in American art, the collection contains textiles, decorative arts, pottery and ceramics from Europe, Asia and the Americas from a variety of eras and cultures. The collection also contains a number of large-scale sculptures exhibited throughout the grounds at the museum’s permanent home at Phelps Grove Park. For other artistic gems you can view throughout the city, you can find artwork and sculptures at Wonders of Wildlife National Museum & Aquarium, public parks, a mosaic wall on Route 66 and many others. pringfield is surrounded by communities that help make up the fabric of the Ozarks. Nixa, just south on U.S. 160, is certainly one worth visiting. “There is a hidden secret that many people are finally beginning to realize — and traveling from all over to experience — and that is our shopping and dining experiences here in Nixa,” said Chris Russell, executive director of the Nixa Chamber of Commerce. “We encourage people to share their experiences while shopping and dining in our city on social media by using the hashtag #ExperienceNixa.”

The recently expanded Morning Day Café is a farm-to-table gem that sources as many products as possible from local producers. Housed in a 113-year-old building, the restaurant’s colorful decor, kitschy salt and pepper shakers and friendly staff add charm to the tasty food. The cafe serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner and has a full bar available. Big Whiskey’s, a franchise that got its start in Springfield, is another popular dining spot and there are many others ranging from mom-and-pop pizza joints to well-known names you’ll recognize.
Shopping Shopping abounds in Nixa from large retailers to locally-owned stores that enhance Nixa’s smalltown charm. For a sense of Nixa’s farming community roots, shopping at Nixa Hardware and Seed Store is a must. Operating since 1899, the independent hardware store offers everything you expect, such as tools and plumbing supplies, to items you wouldn’t expect, such as beekeeping supplies, cowboy boots, wood stoves, equine supplies, cattle medication and more. Events Nixa blends past with present when it comes to events that draw crowds year-round. The town’s most well-known event is Nixa Sucker Day Music, Arts and & Crafts Festival set for May 21-22, 2021. This event started as a fish fry in 1957 with suckers provided by anglers who snagged them from local rivers and streams. Downtown Ozark, Missouri. The Ozark Courthouse Square Historic District is quintessential Americana. The historic courthouse sits in the center with local shops and restaurants surrounding it. Iguana Roja Restaurante is one of those restaurants and specializes in contemporary Latin-American dining. The hot rolls and sorghum are part of their “pass arounds” that come with your meal and also include macaroni & tomatoes, fried potatoes & onions, black-eyed peas and fried okra.
