Springfield 101
Route 66 got its start here, along with Springfield-style cashew chicken and Bass Pro Shops, but that’s just a peek into what our city has to offer. Here’s a snapshot of what makes the Queen City so royally great. By Ettie Berneking
BRAD PITT IS FROM HERE. OF COURSE WE HAD TO LIST THIS FACTOID. TECHNICALLY, HE WAS BORN IN OKLAHOMA, BUT HE GREW UP HERE, AND HE ATTENDED KICKAPOO HIGH SCHOOL. His family still lives in Spring-
field, and his brother is the founder of Care To Learn, which aims to help children in poverty so they can focus and thrive in school.
SPEAKING OF CELEBRITIES, JOHN GOODMAN IS A MISSOURI STATE UNIVERSITY ALUMNUS. His years with
the school’s theater program had such a lasting impact, he helped fund the new John Goodman Amphitheatre in the Judith Enyeart Reynolds Arts Park on campus.
IF YOU HAVE A CASSETTE TAPE, IT WAS LIKELY MADE AT NATIONAL AUDIO COMPANY HERE IN SPRINGFIELD. This is the only producer of magnetic tape for cassettes in the United States, and one of just a handful of cassette manufacturers left in the country. Know who one of their biggest customers is? Disney!
WE’RE POPULAR. THERE’S A SPRINGFIELD IN 34 STATES.
O’REILLY AUTO PARTS GOT ITS START RIGHT HERE IN SPRINGFIELD, MISSOURI. The company started in 1957
when C.F. O’Reilly and his son, Chub, started an auto parts wholesaler and supplier. The company is still family run—it’s well into its third generation—and there are more than 5,000 retail locations around the U.S.
DID YOU KNOW SPRINGFIELD IS CONSIDERED THE BIRTHPLACE OF ROUTE 66? As a result, the Queen City is a
popular destination for history buffs and classic car enthusiasts. Naturally, Springfield hosts the annual Birthplace of Route 66 Festival each August.

But did you know ours is the largest of them all?
WELCOME
HERE’S AN ODD FACT FOR YOU. SPRINGFIELD IS JUST 50 MILES AWAY FROM THE CENTER OF POPULATION FOR THE CONTIGUOUS UNITED STATES. If you’re wondering
what “the center of population” means, we’ll tell you. According to the Census Bureau, this center is where an imaginary, flat, weightless and rigid map of the United States would balance perfectly on a scale if everyone were of identical weight. This point represents the average location of where people in the United States live. Makes perfect sense, right?
ANOTHER WILDLY POPULAR SUCCESS THAT STARTED HERE IN SPRINGFIELD IS SPRINGFIELD-STYLE CASHEW CHICKEN. You can thank David Leong for this oyster-sauce-
covered favorite. Leong came up with the dish in 1963 when he ran a Chinese restaurant and wanted to create a dish that would appeal to the Midwestern palate.
READY TO HIT THE WATER? SPRINGFIELD IS WITHIN 30 MINUTES OF THREE LAKES AND JUST 1 HOUR NORTH OF TABLE ROCK LAKE. The James River also runs south of town and is a popular spot to kayak.
Photos courtesy Bass Pro Shops
IF YOU’RE A GOLF FAN, YOU’LL APPRECIATE THIS.
When Tiger Woods decided to design his first public golf course, he teamed up with Johnny Morris (the owner and founder of Bass Pro Shops) to launch Payne’s Valley Golf Course outside Branson.
BASS PRO SHOPS GOT ITS START IN SPRINGFIELD AND IS STILL HEADQUARTERED HERE TODAY. The outdoor
retailer started off in 1972 when Johnny Morris set up shop in the back of his parents’ liquor store. Now, there are more than 170 shops in the U.S. and Canada, but the original store is here in Springfield, Missouri.

If you’re looking for a spot to park the car and explore on foot, there are two districts to check out: Commercial Street and Downtown. Both are full of live entertainment, great food, shopping, local coffee shops and a whole lot more. So put the car in park and hit the streets.

A SLICE OF
History
Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield is popular among history buffs and trail runners alike. By Madison Yohn
RESEARCH GENEALOGY AT THE LIBRARY
The John K. and Ruth Hulston Civil War Research Library is housed in the Wilson’s Creek Visitor Center. The library includes about 15,000 cataloged books and other items, such as regimental histories for many Civil War units.
SOAK UP HISTORY
Fought on August 10, 1861, the Battle of Wilson’s Creek was a pivotal battle in Missouri and the second major battle of the Civil War. When the smoke cleared, more than 2,500 Union and Confederate soldiers had been killed or wounded or were missing after just five hours of intense fighting. Today, you can learn all about the battle at the renovated Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield Visitor Center, which reopened on May 29, 2021. New additions include more than 1,800 square feet of exhibit space, a large weapons display, the original “Lyon bed” where the body of Union General Nathaniel Lyon was laid after his death during the Battle of Wilson’s Creek and more. The center also features a 27-minute film and gift shop.
CONCERTS AND EVENTS
Concerts, special events and educational presentations pepper the park’s online calendar. At special events, park visitors will encounter people dressed in period costumes. One of the most popular events is the luminary tours in late fall when the tour road is decorated with thousands of luminaria. Contact the park at 417-732-2662 for specific dates.
Photos courtesy Wilson’s Creek
HIKE, RUN OR RIDE
While many people visit this site for its historical significance, it’s also a popular running and walking destination. A 4.9-mile paved tour road provides a self-guided driving or walking tour with eight interpretive stops at significant battle-related locations. Other trails around the battlefield are also popular with horseback riders.

FEED THE GIRAFFES
Their tongues are long and gray, and you’ll get an up-close look at them when you feed the giraffes at the zoo. A feeding deck puts patrons eye-to-eye with these magnificent creatures that delicately feed on the fresh lettuce you can buy and serve them. The deck is closed for the winter from November to February. Be sure to get lots of photos while here.
REVEL IN THE CUTENESS OF THE PETTING ZOO If you like to hear kids laugh and squeal, feed the goats, donkeys, sheep and other hoofstock. They’ll bleat and blat and stick out their tongues to ask for treats you can purchase at the corral.
GRAB SNACKS AND SPLASH AROUND AT BUSH COUNTRY CAFE
Enjoy a meal or snack and a cold drink at the cafe and relax on the deck while the kids play on the playground. Head to the nearby splash pad after lunch to cool off.
PLAN A SPECIAL VISIT
The zoo hosts several annual events including Red, White & Zoo on July 4 when admission is free for veterans and active military and their families. Brew at the Zoo returns in September and is Springfield’s most exotic beer festival.
PHOTOBOMB A PEACOCK
The peacocks you see wandering around the zoo are technically visitors just like
you, except they choose to live at the zoo. See if you can snap a selfie with one of those colorful birds in the background.
TAKE A TRAIN RIDE
Ride the Titus Express around the small lake at the zoo. It’s a great way to help the kids wind down after all the excitement of the zoo or take a break to relax. The train is closed during the winter from November to February.

A DAY AT THE
There’s a reason this history museum was voted America’s No. 1 new attraction by USA Today. This award-winning museum is state-of-the-art with hands-on exhibits, videos, sound and more that tell the story of Springfield and the Ozarks. On historic Park Central Square, the museum takes patrons from the days of Native American habitation to an era when Route 66 was a major thoroughfare from Chicago through the heart of Springfield to San Bernardino, California. Here are a few things patrons can do when they visit the museum. By Susan Wade
DRIVE A TROLLEY
Hop on the trolley for a trip down memory lane. Each turn of the wheels takes the driver and riders down a visual timeline of major events in the city’s history.
WADE IN A STREAM WITH FISH
Fish dash about and frogs jump around your feet with a unique floor video. Each step you take creates a splashing sound and the wildlife react as you move.

CRYSTAL CAVE
SMALLIN CIVIL WAR CAVE
Step through the old iron gates of the original Springfield jail and enter the naturally preserved historic cave, Crystal Cave. First opened to the public in 1893, Crystal Cave is an underworld of tunnels and nooks, including the spot where a mushroom garden sprouted in the early 1900s. Heads up: This tour includes stairs, tight spaces and some crawling at times. You should also linger in the Ghost Room, where 13 stalagmites tower over 2 feet tall, untouched and gleaming. Then there’s the Concert Hall, a space over 100 feet long that features a sea of soda straw stalactites hanging from above. You can also hear the music stalactites produce in the Chimes Room.
Smallin Civil War Cave has been a few things throughout history including a hideout for Wild Bill Hickok during the Civil War. One-hour tours have no stairs but plenty of history. See remnants of the Osage tribe, which used the cave for hundreds of years, and view the waterfalls that gently cascade into a clear pool. For an even more memorable experience, join the lantern tour each fall (late September to early November) to view the cave as it was seen by soldiers more than 150 years ago.

FANTASTIC CAVERNS
Photos by Brandon Alms
Springfield, fantasticcaverns.com
Fantastic Caverns was first discovered by John Knox who was out looking for his dog in 1862, and Knox kept the cave secret until 1867 when the Springfield Women’s Athletic Club were the first to brave the journey underground. The 12 women are considered the first cave explorers of Fantastic Caverns, and guests can still see their names on the cave walls today. An ancient underground river once carved the path traveled by Jeep-drawn trams that lead guests on a 55-minute tour of the, well, fantastic caverns. Guests get an up-close look at rock formations, dangling soda straws coated and shining with minerals and cave pearls in clear water along the way. Tours are led by experts who answer cave questions to help guests learn and explore the Cave State’s wonders and history.

No visit to the Springfield area would be complete without spending some time on the rivers and lakes. Grab a fishing pole or a kayak, and invite your friends. By Mary Ellen Chiles
FISH
There are plenty of spots to cast a line while you’re in the Ozarks. Be sure to buy a license from a vendor or online through the Missouri Department of Conservation app. Looking to catch some trout? One popular spot is Roaring River State Park. You can flyfish and use bait or use plastic lures without worrying about tangling up lines. You can rent equipment and buy a license at the store. At Bennett Springs State Park you can fish in cool pools near stone arch bridges where 100,000 gallons of water pour from the spring every day, and rainbow trout are restocked daily. Want to cast a little closer to town and have your own gear? You can fish for bass from the Grant Street Bridge at McDaniel Lake. Just remember that this is the only place where you can fish McDaniel Lake. If you want more variety—walleye, crappie, largemouth bass and more—try fishing at Fellows Lake. You can buy bait and tackle at the store. This lake also features big muskies, but remember, they are nicknamed “the fish of 10,000 casts” for a reason. The Watershed Committee of the Ozarks helps manage the Valley Water Mill Park. Here you can catch largemouth bass, bluegill and catfish.

out worrying about planning meals or routes? 37 North Expeditions is your go-to for guided trips year-round. They can even help you plan a private excursion.
PADDLEBOARD
Stand up paddleboarding (SUP) is a fresh take on paddling and a fun way to get on the water and check out the wildlife. You can even get a great workout because you have to keep your balance while on the board. Never tried it? No worries. Boards are lightweight and wide, so you can keep your balance, even on your first try. Show Me SUP offers guided floats on the James River, and offers daily SUP rentals. You can also check out the Finley River near Ozark with a guided sunset paddle. Feel like an adventurous yoga workout? Check out Gliding Light for fitness classes on Table Rock Lake. This nearby SUP guide also offers guided floating meditations. Want to try paddleboarding on a gentle surface? Ozark River Walkers hosts SUP events all over the area. You can bring your own SUP, or rent a board from ORW and join them for a paddle.
BOATING OR WAKEBOARDING
Head about 45 minutes south from Springfield, and you’ll find yourself at Table Rock Lake. Rent a boat and enjoy miles and miles of shoreline. This is a popular lake for water skiing, wakeboarding and wake surfing. There are also plenty of quiet coves you can anchor in for a leisurely swim.

WELCOME TO
Tent Theatre It’s not a show, it’s an experience. We’re raising the curtain on Springfield’s premier outdoor performing arts theater. By Ren Bishop
A GOOD PLACE TO SEE A SHOW Named for one of Missouri State University’s most famous alumni, the John Goodman Ampitheatre in the Judith Enyeart Reynolds Arts Park opened in late 2022. Fun fact: John Goodman attended Missouri State University to play football in the early 1970s. He graduated in 1975 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts before heading to New York City.
JOHN GOODMAN’S FAVORITE PLACE For many Missouri State University performing arts students, Tent Theatre is a highlight and a cherished memory from their time on campus. “The nights in Springfield, in the summer doing Tent Theatre, for me, are unmatched anywhere else on earth,” says Goodman.
A SHOWSTOPPING INVESTMENT Ground broke on the amphitheater and arts park on April 8, 2021. The open-air facility cost $10 million and is the permanent home for Tent Theatre, as well as space for jazz festivals and comedy acts.
Each season, tickets sell out. Opening night tickets sold out in less than 24 hours in 2023.
A HIT FROM THE BEGINNING In its first season, the tent was a hit, with overflowing audiences thanks to word of mouth and outstanding productions. Even in its debut year, the tent was too small, and an expansion was added in year two.

OFFICIAL AREA GUIDE / 2024
COME BLOW YOUR HORN The first show in Missouri State’s tent was Neil Simon’s Come Blow Your Horn. Each season, a basic show formula remains: two musicals and one play.
FREE PARKING Parking for Tent Theatre is free; no campus permit required. Patrons may park in the east side of lot 24 at the recently renovated southwest corner of Grand Street and National Avenue.
Local Theatre, Local Fare
Intermission under the stars is a real treat. At each performance, patrons can indulge in local favorites. Pineapple Whip and Andy’s Frozen Custard by the cup are divine for a sweet scoop, or try Over the Top popcorn by Ozark Mountain Popcorn. The signature popcorn blend features classic butter, a hint of vanilla and orange and green sprinkles.

Art Museum
Established in 1928, the Springfield Art Museum is the city’s oldest cultural institution. Offering permanent and traveling installations, workshops, classes and special events, it continues to thrive and spread its mission of inviting visitors to connect with the world, their community and themselves through art. By Sonia Guzman
SIGN UP FOR A WORKSHOP OR CLASS All skill levels are welcome at museum workshops and classes. With the intention of providing an enriching learning environment, each class is focused on a special topic or technique and typically has a connection to a permanent or current exhibition.
ATTEND THE ANNUAL WATERCOLOR USA EXHIBIT The museum is hosting the 63rd exhibition of Watercolor USA June 8–Sept. 1, 2024. This juried exhibition honors contemporary American watermedia painting. This exhibition is open to artists across all 50 states and U.S. territories.
GRAB A TAKE-HOME PROJECT BAG The museum provides take-home project bags for the whole family to enjoy. Each bag comes with materials and instructions to create projects inspired by its permanent collection. Check the museum’s website to see when the next project bag will be available and take one home for free.
TOUR THE PERMANENT COLLECTION The museum’s permanent collection, Creating an American Identity, contains more than 10,000 works in nearly every medium. The exhibit aims to show that there is no fixed American identity, and artwork is chosen based on its ability to reveal how artists respond to and reveal our cultural identity as Americans.
ATTEND ART IN BLOOM Art in Bloom is one of two signature fundraising events the museum hosts each year that celebrates fine art, flowers and fashion. Art in Bloom is a threeday festival taking place each spring and offers workshops, exhibits and family art-making exhibits. There’s even a flower-inspired fashion show. While you’re at it, don’t miss the fall fundraiser, 99X Party. Enjoy living art and creative cocktails while helping preserve the museum’s collection.

You could spend all day at Finley Farms. Start off with some coffee and toast at The Workshop where you can crack open the laptop or read on the patio. Then stroll around the gardens of this working farm or savor the panoramic Finley River view from the pedestrian bridge. Don’t forget to grab lunch on the patio at Ozark Mill Restaurant and enjoy the views or head downstairs for some speakeasy vibes at The Garrison where low lighting and fine dining pair great with cocktails under the stars.
1
Hoping for a special lunch—like chicken salad and strawberry soup, washed down with flavored tea and a slice of homemade cake or pie for dessert? Turn at the big red “Eat” sign at Spring Creek Tea Room. Open 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, this tea room and antique shop is across the street from the historic Ozark square.
2
Searching for antiques and flea market finds, handcrafted items and boutique gifts? U.S. Highway 65 and West Jackson Street is a mecca, with hundreds of booths among eight stores. (Learn more about area antique shops on p. 94.) Visit smaller shops at West State Highway J and 17th Street or along East South Street.

From music and magic to comedy and dancing on stage, Branson’s show scene has broad appeal. Traditional country music and comedy acts like The Baldknobbers and The Presleys share that scene with newer acts like The Duttons and The Haygoods. Tributes to legends like Patsy Cline and Frankie Valli can be found along with shows that are all about the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s. You can even enjoy dinner and a show on the Showboat Branson Belle.
2
Plan a day at Silver Dollar City— voted Best Theme Park by USA Today. In a rustic 1880s Ozarks setting, visitors can shop, dine and watch demonstrations by craftsmen like potters and glassblowers. They can also enjoy some 40 live music and shows and more than 40 rides, including kids’ rides.

REST & RELAX
TREAT
Yo' Self
It’s time to relax, unwind and enjoy some pampering. By Ettie Berneking
BODY WRAP
Once you’ve walked the greenway trail around the lake and grabbed a beer at one of the two local breweries near Sequiota Park, it’s time to book yourself some you time at Acacia Spa (4058 S. Lone Pine Ave., Springfield). This local oasis has a new body treatment known as the Restorative Stone Crop Body Treatment. It’s a deep-hydration treatment that includes a facial and scalp massage.
EXPRESS FACIAL
If you’re tight on time, then book an express facial at Nu Essence Spa (1319 E. Republic Rd., Springfield). There are two 30-minute facials to choose from, but both will give you just enough time to relax and enjoy the peace and quiet before you head back to your busy schedule.
SHOWER (BUT BETTER)
SPA COMBO
If you have a full day to kill, a trip to Cedar Creek Spa & Salon at Big Cedar Lodge (190 Top of the Rock Rd., Ridgedale) is worth the drive. Walking around the wooded Big Cedar property is relaxing on its own, but the spa is where you can truly unwind. Soak in the grotto, or sweat it out in the steam room, or sip on some tea on one of the patios and enjoy time to yourself. To make the most of your time, book a 45-minute relaxation massage paired with a 45-minute facial. Grab lunch at Devil’s Pool afterward.
A SALT VAULT
For those who turn to the healing power of rose quartz, you’ll love the Dry Salt
114 OFFICIAL AREA GUIDE / 2024
Big Cedar Lodge Halotherapy at Breathe Health Spa (1730 E. Republic Rd., Springfield). For starters, the room is lined with glowing rose quartz, so go ahead and check off the box for great ambiance. The treatment itself is all about taking a chill pill and focusing on your breath. As you lounge in the salt vault, pure-grade sodium chloride is heated and dispersed into the air through a halogenerator. The dry salt aerosol is said to soothe skin conditions and help your lungs if you struggle with respiratory issues.
FLOAT AWAY
To relax and let the stress of the outside world melt away, book a float at Theta Wellness Center (1339 E. Montclair St., Springfield). Thanks to about 800 to 1,000
pounds of Epsom salt, you’ll float effortlessly in water that’s warmed to 93.5 degrees. At that temperature, you lose the physical awareness of the water in about 10 minutes. If tight spaces aren’t your thing, then book a float in the pool, but if you want the full sensory-deprivation experience, take a dip in the float cabin. You can also enjoy a cold plunge here.
CRYSTAL FACIAL
We promise you’ve never had a facial quite like this. A facial at SKIN/CRAFT (500 S. Highland Springs Blvd., Springfield) isn’t just a facial, it’s an energetic facial. It’s all about the healing powers of crystals here, so relax and let that crystal eye mask work its magic.
This is truly the best shower you’ll ever have, partly because all you have to do is lie down and relax. The Vichy Gold Experience is a treatment at Grove Spa (1522 E. Sunshine St., Springfield), and it’s a 30-minute experience where you get to enjoy a body exfoliation scrub followed by a warm rain massage. You’ll never look at your shower the same way again.
REST & RELAX
WHERE
TO STAY Between boutique hotels, national favorites, charming Airbnbs and pet-friendly stays, there are plenty of places to set up lodging while you’re in town. Now all you have to do is figure out what kind of night you’re looking for. By Ettie Berneking
GREAT FOR PETS
Those traveling with their furry best friends are in luck. Most Springfield hotels are pet-friendly. If you’re staying on the north side of town, check in at the DoubleTree Hotel and don’t skip the warm cookie offered to you at check in. If you’re on Springfield’s south side, stay at Hilton Garden Inn and walk to several local restaurants at Farmers Park. Also, snap a photo of yourself and your pup inside The Cloud House.

CLOSE TO DOWNTOWN
Whether you’re visiting one of Springfield’s college campuses or you’re here for a live show or an athletic tournament, there are several hotels downtown that put you within walking distance of restaurants, live entertainment and some really good coffee. Tru By Hilton is just off the Missouri State University campus and is known for its continental breakfast and snack bar. Hotel Vandivort is in the heart of downtown and is Springfield’s only AAA 4 Diamond-rated hotel. The on-site restaurant, The Order, always has great food and cocktails, and the rooftop bar, Vantage Rooftop Lounge, is next door. University Plaza is located in the histoic Walnut neighborhood, and within walking distance of Hammons Field, the Convention Center and Missouri State University.

REST & RELAX puts you next to good coffee and plenty of international cuisine, stay at Culture Boutique Hotel. Each of the six rooms is inspired by a city in Eurasia. For tropical vibes, head to Oasis Hotel & Convention Center. Between the flamingo mural and palm trees on the pool deck, you’ll forget you’re in the Midwest.

A UNIQUE STAY
If you’re tired of traditional hotels and want to rest your head somewhere a little different, book a night at the Best Western Route 66 Rail Haven. As its name suggests, this motel is Route 66-themed, so get ready for endless classic car sightings. For something on C-Street that
Want a cozy retreat perfect for one (or two if you like close quarters)? Check out The Little House located on historic Walnut Street just a few blocks from downtown. This two-room cottage used to be a caretaker’s cottage and is tucked away behind a beautiful Victorian home. Kick up your feet in the heart of the charming Rountree neighborhood at Pickwick Places 201. These two apartments are above Culture Flock, right next to Cherry Picker, Tie & Timber Beer Co., The Royal and Skully’s. The modern apartment is literally feet from one of Springfield’s hottest night scenes. For a quiet apartment near the shade of Phelps Grove Park, check out Holland Loft. BASKETBALL
Missouri State men’s and Lady Bears have brought home several awards as Division I teams. The Lady Bears have competed in 17 NCAA tournaments, won 13 conference regular season titles, been crowned conference champions 30 times and won the Women’s National Invitation Tournament in 2005. The men’s basketball team is a Division I team and has appeared in the NCAA tournament six times and competed at conference championships 24 times. For more than 38 years, the Bass Pro Tournament of Champions has brought

in high school basketball teams from all over the country, and the tournament has even been televised on ESPN+.
SOCCER
If you’re in town when the Missouri State soccer teams are playing, go see a game. You never know when a Bear could go pro. Kyle Hiebert is a great example. The MSU Bear now plays for MLS team St. Louis City SC. Soccer is picking up speed in Springfield—especially youth soccer. In 2020, Springfield hosted the Missouri State High School Activities Association championship soccer game. Sporting Springfield is the competition program in town, and kids play at the $24 million Betty and Bobby Allison Sports Town, which boasts 12 outdoor fields plus a 90,000-square-foot indoor facility for volleyball, soccer and basketball.
TENNIS
Thanks to top-notch facilities, Springfield hosts its share of tennis competitions at the Cooper Tennis Complex. The center has hosted Fed Cup play, ATP and WTA professional tournaments, NCAA II National Championships, National 12-and-under Championships, Missouri High School Championships, 2018 NCAA Missouri Valley Tennis championships and numerous USTA events.
PICKLEBALL
Despite its funny name, pickleball is no laughing matter. This approachable and fast-paced game has taken off big time in Springfield. Meador Park tennis courts now host 12 pickleball courts. The Queen City loves pickleball so much, it started the Annual Queen City Open tournament at the Cooper Tennis Complex each June. Players 12 and older are welcome to compete. Pickleball players from across Missouri will actually be headed to Springfield to compete because the Queen City won the coveted title of host of the USA Pickleball Association Middle States Regional Championship games.
BASEBALL
If baseball is your favorite pastime, don’t miss a chance to attend a Springfield Cardinals game. The Double-A team is a feeder team for the St. Louis redbirds, and pros including Adam Wainwright and Yadier Molina have headed south and rehabbed with the Springfield team. Outside of Hammons Field, Springfield’s Meador Park has hosted several MSHSAA Baseball Championships. Baseball has such deep roots in southwest Missouri that the neighboring city of Ozark was picked to host the MSHSAA Baseball Championships from 2021 through 2025.

agles and Panthers and Bears, oh my! Not to mention Bearcats, Bobcats and Valor! Some of the best higher education institutions in the Midwest are in the Ozarks, each offering something unique for students and the communities they call home. Public or private, large or small, colleges and universities in the Ozarks bring over 40,000 students to the region annually who, along with their campuses, add to the fabric of the area.
MISSOURI STATE UNIVERSITY
DRURY UNIVERSITY At Drury University you’ll find treelined pathways, two Civil War-era cannons and a campus history that runs deep, with the first graduates being five women in 1875. If you hear cheering while you’re on the 90-acre campus, it’s likely coming from the O’Reilly Family Event Center where

the Panthers play basketball to enthusiastic crowds. A university with a rich tradition of service, the roughly 3,200 students are dedicated to volunteering within the Springfield community.
OZARKS TECHNICAL COMMUNITY COLLEGE For more than 30 years, Ozarks Technical Community College has provided affordable education and workforce training to students of all ages. The college has served more than 200,000 students since its inception. As the third-largest community college in Missouri, OTC is constantly evolving to meet the needs of its student population, and as part of that goal, OTC opened the $40 million Robert W. Plaster Center for Advanced Manufacturing in 2022.
COLLEGE OF THE OZARKS On your day trip to Branson, stop at College of the Ozarks to learn why it’s dubbed “Hard Work U.” C of O at Point Lookout provides opportunities for students to work on campus to pay for education, with the remainder of tuition covered by scholarships. Enjoy a student-prepared meal at the award-winning Dobyns Dining Room, stop by the bakery and mill for student-made items, and check out the Ralph Foster Museum showcasing memorabilia from around the Ozarks.
COX COLLEGE Cox College offers associate, bachelor and master’s degrees in nursing, occupational therapy and other areas of health care. About 1,000 students attend the private college.

In downtown Springfield, you’ll notice Bears and maroon thanks to Missouri State University. Missouri’s second largest state university abuts downtown, where many students live, adding vibrancy to the scene. The campus’ large trees and fountains make for a gorgeous stroll where famous alumni, like John Goodman, once walked. Those fountains are a must-see, and each spring, “Fountain Day” is celebrated with the ceremonial turning on of the water. Along with the scenery, there are an abundance of arts and athletics opportunities from Broadway shows at Juanita K Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts to cheering on the Bears in sports.

MERCY COLLEGE OF NURSING AND HEALTH SCIENCES The Sisters of Mercy have provided nursing education in the Springfield community since 1906. In 1986 Mercy partnered with Southwest Baptist University to offer nursing programs. Today, the program has expanded to include more health care programs.
EVANGEL UNIVERSITY Valor represents the values instilled in each of the 2,300 students enrolled annually at Evangel University. This Assemblies of God university has a beautifully landscaped campus featuring 9,000 tulips that bloom—and draw in visitors—each spring. On campus, you’ll find theater, events and sports, with “Carl the Clocktower” at the center of it all.
