Spring Fling 2019 Brochure

Page 1

Welcome to Spring Fling 2019! This year we have another jam-packed arts and crafts open studio event, spanning across our magnificent region of Dumfries and Galloway. Ninety-four studios from Drummore in the west of the region to Eskdalemuir in the east will open their doors and invite you in to see where the creative magic happens. These carefully selected high-quality studios cover a range of disciplines from painting, willow, hats and felt to metalwork, furniture, glass and illustration. Many of our studios are family friendly so plan ahead and make this a weekend for all the family. New for 2019 we have launched the brandnew Spring Fling website for event visitors, introduced the New Graduate Scheme for emerging artists and makers to take part in the event, developed our workshops programme and have 13 new studios taking part. Workshops offer a wide range of textiles, jewellery, ceramics, painting, spoon carving and more! This year, you, our Spring Fling visitors, have more opportunities than ever to get hands-on and learn directly from some of our artists and makers. You can then visit their studios, learn about their practices and maybe buy some original work over Spring Fling weekend.

demonstrations, view our studios exhibition and book workshop tickets. Then in May, there will be an exhibition at Gracefield Arts Centre showcasing the culmination of the Energise Residency programme which took place in the Galloway Glens from late 2018. We would like to thank our funders and supporters who have made this year’s event possible, Dumfries & Galloway Council, EventScotland, Creative Scotland, the Barfil Trust, The Holywood Trust, our dedicated board, staff and our Friends. On behalf of everyone at Upland, we hope you enjoy Spring Fling Open Studios 2019. Joanna Macaulay Events & Exhibitions Manager Upland CIC

Also featuring this year is The WaterOrgan, a specially commissioned public art project. It will excite and inspire audiences with fountains of sound and light. Focusing on hydro-kinetic energy, the commission will be on the Green Route and should not be missed. If our high quality art and craft studios don’t entice (but they will!), we are sure this spectacular commission will tempt you off the M74 and into our beautiful region. In the lead up to the main event there will be the SF Pop-UP at The Oven in Dumfries. Here visitors can grab a brochure, see artists Images by Colin Tennant

Invitation only for Friends of Spring Fling (sign up p14). Talks: Hydrosocial Cycle Our Relationship with Rivers and Waters, with Dr David Borthwick of the University of Glasgow Dr Borthwick will discuss our varied relationships with rivers as they move through the landscape, considering ‘the hydrosocial cycle’ (Linton and Budds) and how this helps us understand the ways in which water and society make and remake each other. Using poetry and folklore, he will discuss the river as collection of changeable relationships and voices: a water organ. Talks at: Saturday 25th May at 2pm / Sunday 26 May at 7pm The WaterOrgan invites you all to come and engage. Perfect for children, families, river and engineering enthusiasts! Emerge

Energise

Emerge is a 9 month programme of mentoring, with a bursary of £1,000 for young artists and makers with a connection to Dumfries & Galloway.

A residency programme and exhibition exploring the history and legacy of the Galloway hydroelectric power scheme.

This year, we have awarded two Emerge bursaries which will see each young artist paired up with an experienced Upland Member artist or maker.

Gracefield Arts Centre 28 Edinburgh Road, Dumfries, DG1 1JQ 11 May – 29 June 2019: Tues – Sat 10am – 5pm (Open Sunday & Monday during Spring Fling weekend) Free

As well as creating new work and taking part in Spring Fling, the recipients will also benefit from go & see trips, networking and training opportunities. Now in its seventh year, the programme is becoming a key part of the infrastructure for our next generation of artists and makers in Dumfries & Galloway. Through continued support by The Holywood Trust, we are delighted to be able to support two young artists for 2019. Emerge Young Artists 2019 Jordan Chisholm (Studio 65, p55) Mentored by Jo Hodges

The Energise project ran from October 2018 – April 2019 with the aim of giving artists the opportunity to research and creatively explore the subject of climate change in relation to the unique landscape of Dumfries & Galloway. The project aimed to connect artists with local communities, including young people and schools, in order to explore perceptions and responses to climate change with specific regard to renewable energy, in an imaginative and positive way. NEW STUDIO

NEW STUDIO

As a trained fine artist, I chose to work in the medium of fibre some fifteen years ago to explore colour, texture and form, to create vibrant and considered artworks in sympathy with the natural beauty of the land and seascapes of Dumfries & Galloway.

I am primarily an artist working with wood. My art practice developed through discovery and this lead to me substituting paper for wood and the pencil for a hot wire as my artform. My response to nature is evident in my chosen medium of wood.

What to expect: As Scotland’s most southerly artist and art space, visitors will experience the beauty of the landscape and my artistic response. I will demonstrate the felting process using wool fibres, silk and art yarns creating texture and form finishing with free motion stitching.

What to expect: I am studio sharing with Linda Irving. You will see me demonstrating wood turning and pyrography (wood burning), explaining tools and techniques used, with the opportunity for visitors to try burning designs onto wood themselves. I will be showing a vast range of my art.

Open evening on Friday with refreshments.

My paintings begin in the pages of my art journals, an intuitive form of personal therapy. The ideas that emerge become abstract paintings, imbued with layers of emotion and almost secret imagery. As a trained bookbinder, I also turn paintings into new books and journals.

Memories of fire in a disused forge have inspired my latest artwork: a place suspended in time. I’ve been building up layers from a base of loose Gesso strokes, then layering paint and glazes to capture the light, colours and textures of this fascinating space.

What to expect: A warm welcome to my studio with new paintings and hand bound books for sale, work in various stages of development, a glimpse inside the pages of my art journals and an insight into my world of colour.

What to expect: Sketchbooks and examples of the painting process will be on view. A mix of new and older artwork, a wall of smaller works, cards and original prints will be on sale. Outdoors, the top of the garden offers views toward the Mull of Galloway. £2.50 - £500

Landscape, as a subject, has always felt important to me as an artist. I work in bold colours that reflect the drama and diversity of Dumfries & Galloway. Initial sketches are developed in the studio, usually working with acrylic and oils.

I build and excavate my ideas to create semi-abstract and narrative mosaic work from a wide and individual base of technique and material. In commission and studio work I aim always for powerful and original statements.

What to expect: A warm welcome awaits visitors to my studio and on display will be a range of works in a variety of mediums plus a range of cards depicting my images. Sketchbooks and photographs will illustrate how paintings are developed into a finished work.

What to expect: Visitors will see recent exhibition and developing work which explores where time and memory meet. Designs and processes for this last year of commissions will be shown together with examples of materials and tools both traditional and individual.

Inspiration for my work comes from my direct experience of a place which is initially recorded in my sketchbook or with my camera. I use a variety of materials to create my visual world and enjoy mixing traditional mark making techniques with modern digital practices.

I create jewellery using precious metals and gemstones which is timeless and contemporary. My love of unusual gems and organic forms can be seen in my designs. I enjoy using a mix of traditional jewellery skills and modern technology to create jewels to treasure.

What to expect: I’m currently exploring my own visual conversation focused on the challenges and threats that face our natural environment. Visitors will see my sketchbooks, illustrations and experience my most recent experiments in film and sound.

While encaustics remains my principal practice, cold wax painting and sculpture are enticing diversions. Work develops exploring notions of transformation through concepts of movement in space; flight of birds and displacement of air as wings beat - abstract expression of how this looks and feels.

I have been recently been experimenting with collage and mixed media, which has added another dimension to my watercolours. I have a love of wild places, particularly the Western Isles. Using memory and imagination the finished work is often a combination of reality and abstraction.

What to expect: Blowtorch, molten beeswax, pounding tree resin, gatherings of rusty metal, tools for scraping and cutting, wondrous graphite, mark making, buttery oil paints, papers and panels and sketchbooks, translucence, seductive smells, stuff to buy.

What to expect: I am happy to explain how I develop my work from conception to the finished painting. There will be examples of work at different stages to illustrate this transition. I will have original paintings, prints and greetings cards for sale.

My paintings are produced in the studio from a combination of on site sketches, photographs and imagination. This year some of my work almost represents actual scenes, although I can never resist the odd tweak to reality here and there.

My pieces are most often based on birds, fish and other animals, often with wordplay in the title. My intention is always to make something beautiful to look at, but I also love to make people smile.

What to expect: Original paintings, prints and cards are for sale, with the experience (hopefully) enhanced by the country garden setting and background music. You can see work in progress, look at the materials and tools used to create the work or otherwise just chill on the couch.

What to expect: My studio is always in a state of organised chaos. Visitors will see pieces in varying stages of completion amongst the tools of my trade; my kiln makes an excellent display stand! I am always happy to explain how I do things.

Formerly I worked with textiles but am now concentrating more on painting. My work, which is predominantly in a loose, abstract style, is influenced by colour, texture, pattern and balance and aims to create the atmosphere and essence of place.

I’m a painter and printmaker of Scottish landscapes, focusing on the forests, lochs and skies of the region. I paint in oils, both figuratively and with leanings towards semi-abstraction. My printmaking explores form & texture using drypoint and carborundum processes. What to expect: Sharing with Fitch & McAndrew offers an opportunity for me to step outside my studio and show a wider range of work as well as paintings in progress. Visitors will also see the paraphernalia and inspirations of my daily studio life. Homemade refreshments by Jools. £50 - £500

Our business is a partnership, a husband and wife team. We make a range of glorious slipware, an interpretation of the traditional wares of the United Kingdom. There will be pots at all stages of production, plus demonstrations & films of our processes. The potter’s wheel will be turning throughout the day. £20 - £500

I work with glass as I find it an endlessly fascinating and adaptable medium. I’m currently using just pure glass powders to create sculptural forms, attempting to make the work as lightweight and fragile as the nature that informs it.

Things I still love: well designed bits of engineering, making simple shapes into complex forms, frosted silver and the warmth of polished gold, attention to detail, working in silver, necklaces of lustrous pearls, making brooches, and a good play on the radio.

What to expect: The studio this year will be full of birds and light. My love for local and worldwide birdlife continues with a new show based around vulnerable species. I shall also be focusing on new lighting designs exclusively for Spring Fling and to be commissioned.

What to expect: A cheery welcome as always! This is my opportunity to show comprehensive collections of work, illustrations of recent special commissions, samples of techniques, tools and work in progress at a replica of my work space. Basically, I will show how I do what I do. £18 - £800

My art represents my own self and is a documented chronology of my life story. The times I have loved and lost, laughed and cried. The people I have met, the different characters that have come and gone. I am fascinated with people and relationships.

I am a multifaceted artist, being adaptable according to project and medium. Nonetheless, training in illustration has given me a notable style which remains present. I classify myself as a bit of an inventor and I like to build things in 3D.

What to expect: You can expect to see art that challenges your thought process. Art that I create subconsciously, and the constant move I have through different painting styles. You will see writings and paintings completed at a time when my mind was not in its true form.

I create sculptural mixed-media portraiture pieces. I like to use objects that already have a history, whether broken, reclaimed or unused, adding an emotional and cultural context. I am inspired by my own experiences as well as political or moral issues. What to expect: Visitors can expect symbolic work that challenges the idea of what portraiture is, exploring non-figurative portraiture and focusing on a feeling or theme as representative of human nature. There will be smaller, more traditional, pieces which aim to give large-scale issues a relatable human face.

I graduated from Glasgow School of Art with a BA(Hons) Degree in Ceramic Design and have been a practising potter for the last 30 years. In the last few years I have diversified into 2D painting, printmaking and mixed media.

I make 1/24th scale models of interior spaces, places where I’ve worked or of some industrial or political significance. For Spring Fling my studio moves up from the basement into MERZ Gallery to include an exhibition of models stretching back to the 1960s.

I’ve always enjoyed working with wood and use my knowledge as an engineer to create my instruments. The first were for my two children, a harp for Flo and a violin for Isabelle. The challenge of instrument making is technical, creative and emotional.

Upland Projects Upland is a bold, ambitious, rurally-based visual art, design and craft development organisation. We nurture, produce and promote visual art, design and craft, and raise the profile of the creative industries of our rural area in a national and international context. Upland evolved from Spring Fling CIC and was established in 2015. Spring Fling Open Studios continues as Upland’s flagship event, but we now offer a year80 Spring Fling 2019

round programme delivering a range of projects including events and exhibitions working with young people, emerging and established artists and makers. Alongside creative projects, Upland provides a network for learning and sharing, offering advice and support to creative practitioners, whilst aiming to inspire and educate a wide range of audiences to participate in and be supportive of visual arts and crafts.

Modern Makers

Early Engagement

Modern Makers is a programme for a small group of young people from Dumfries and Galloway, to work intensively with a professional maker to learn craft skills.

Upland is continuing to develop links with schools throughout Dumfries and Galloway by taking our artists and makers into the classroom. We deliver workshops and talks within secondary schools and are committed to creating quality opportunities to benefit and inspire young people by connecting them with established artists and makers.

During 2016, six young people worked with Sam Booth to collaboratively design and build a bespoke bird hide for an RSPB reserve at the Crook of Baldoon, near Wigtown. In 2017, four young people gained hands-on learning with slipware potters Douglas Fitch and Hannah McAndrew, and in 2018 participants worked with Alex Rigg and his performance theatre company, Oceanallover, exploring sculptural costume for use in live performance. This year six young people are working with printmakers Colin Blanchard, Pamela Grace and Hugh Bryden to explore the craft of printmaking.

Emerge Emerge is a 9 month programme aimed at emerging artists and makers. Participants are mentored by a professional artist, awarded a bursary for the creation of new work and are invited to take part in Spring Fling. See page 11 for details of this year’s recipients.

Professional Development & Exhibitions A programme of events offering advice and support to artists and makers, providing opportunities and resources to develop their skills and creative practice. Alongside workshops, support and advice, we also offer exhibition opportunities for our members, giving artists and makers a platform to showcase their work outwith the region.

Artist Residencies The Energise residency project ran from October 2018 – April 2019, giving artists the opportunity to research and creatively explore the subject of climate change in relation to the unique landscape of Dumfries & Galloway. The project has culminated in an exhibition at Gracefield Arts Centre, open throughout Spring Fling weekend. For more details please see page 11.

Please keep in touch with us throughout the year as opportunities and new projects develop! For information on all Upland activities, please visit www.weareupland.com Spring Fling 2019 81
