Wigtown Book Festival Artist-in-Residence, Emily Tough, will be presenting an exhibition in Wigtown during the event which showcases the culmination of her time at WBF in 2019. Look out for our spotlight on regional food and drink and our new digital developments, including the brand new Spring Fling App! During the event there will also be an Upland exhibition showcasing five years of Modern Makers – this is not to be missed! In advance of the event, we are taking an exhibition of work by some of this year’s participants to Island Arts Centre in Northern Ireland, where a joint exhibition will see SF artists and makers and those from Northern Ireland exhibit on the theme Across the Sea: The North Channel.

Emerge
Modern Makers Exhibition
Emerge is a 9 month programme of mentoring with a bursary of £1,000 for early career artists and makers with a connection to Dumfries & Galloway.
Modern Makers is a programme for a small group of young people from Dumfries and Galloway to work intensively with a professional maker to learn craft skills.
This year, we have awarded three Emerge bursaries which will see each recipient paired up with an experienced Upland artist or maker.
Developed from Modern Heritage Craft which ran in 2014 and 2015, the programme has seen young people learn skills in shoe making, furniture building, glass, jewellery and more. From 2016 – 2020 the programme developed and expanded, enabling young people to spend 30 days working with established makers gaining hands-on skills alongside a unique insight into how an artist/maker functions in today’s social and economic environment.
As well as creating new work and taking part in Spring Fling, the recipients will also benefit from go & see trips, networking and training opportunities. Now in its ninth year, the programme is becoming a key part of the infrastructure for our next generation of artists and makers in Dumfries & Galloway. Two of the 2020 Emerge Bursaries are funded by The Holywood Trust (specifically for artists and makers 30 years and under) and one Emerge Bursary is funded by Creative Scotland (for an emerging artist or maker of any age).
This year marks the fifth year of the Modern Makers expanded programme and sees young people working with renowned glass artist Amanda Simmons. The exhibition takes a look back at the programme’s origins with a focus on the last five years, showcasing work from both participants and lead makers - Sam Booth, Fitch & McAndrew, Alex Rigg, Pamela Grace, Hugh Bryden, Colin Blanchard and Amanda Simmons.

Each year in Spring since 2003, artists and makers in Dumfries & Galloway have opened their doors to visitors from around the world‌
NEIGHBOUR Our Neighbours Scheme was introduced in 2013 to strengthen our links with artists and makers from our neighbouring regions and allows a limited number of them to take part in Spring Fling in venues across the border from where they live and work.
EMERGE With continued support from The Holywood Trust and the Archie Sutter Watt Trust, Emerge, our Young Artists Programme, awards a bursary and a period of mentoring to three recent graduates with a connection to Dumfries and Galloway. Find out more about the programme on p11.

As a trained fine artist, I chose to move from paint to fibre sixteen years ago to add depth in my explorations of colour, texture and form. My vibrant and considered artworks are in sympathy with the natural beauty of the land/seascapes in Dumfries & Galloway.
I am an artist working with wood. My art practice developed through discovery and this led to me substituting paper for wood and the pencil for a hot wire. My response to the natural environment is evident in my chosen medium of wood.
What to expect: As Scotland’s most southerly artist and art space including a new gallery, visitors will experience the geographical beauty and my artistic response to it. I will demonstrate my felting process, using embellishments and my free motion stitching. I am hosting Jane Fraser’s woodturning art. On Friday, there will be an evening opening with refreshments.
What to expect: I am studio sharing with Linda Irving. You will see me demonstrating wood turning and pyrography, explaining the tools and techniques used with the opportunity for visitors to burn designs onto wood themselves. I will be showing a vast range of my art.

I am increasingly drawn to the study of water, and light. This has resulted in a series of abstract and semi-abstract paintings exploring the contrasts of calm, still waters with violent storms expressing an inner landscape of turbulent emotions with moods of more reflective stillness.
I’m a printmaker and wildlife artist, also making prints of Scottish landscapes. My work is accessible and bold and my subject matter is familiar to everyone! I make etchings, woodcuts, linocuts and other kinds of print using two beautiful presses which you’ll see in use.
What to expect: Visitors will be warmly welcomed into my studio with its beautiful sea view. I will have sketchbooks, studies and art journals on display alongside finished paintings, affordable prints and cards and I am always happy to discuss my processes, media and influences.
What to expect: There will be approximately 40 framed recent works in the gallery area along with books and cards. I’ll be demonstrating printmaking and happily answering your questions in the studio. This year I’m donating 10% of the proceeds to my local RSPB Nature Reserve.

I’m a painter inspired by nature, beauty and mystery. Whilst my paintings are landscape based, my use of fluid acrylics allows for a strong element of abstract play and happy accident and more intuitive expression.
Working on moorland and hill ground in the Machars on a daily basis, I am inspired to sketch and paint in oils the landscape around me. Ever changing colours and the composition of my environment is what initially captures my imagination, with detail being secondary.
What to expect: Visitors will see my full range of framed and unframed works, plus a range of prints and cards of favourite past works. My studio practice will be in demonstration with works-inprogress.

My work is principally concerned with the Galloway landscape, although I do paint still life when the weather is unsympathetic. I work from sketchbooks, developing and re-structuring my ideas into finished paintings in oils.

I am a textile artist specialising in hats and headwear. My work is a continuous experiment, designing unusual, innovative, unique, original pieces of wearable sculpture. All handwoven. The designs extend from the extraordinary and eccentric to a modern take on the traditional beret.

Spring Fling x Wigtown Book Festival Artist-in-Residence 2019/20 We are delighted that the Spring Fling x Wigtown Book Festival Residency returned for the 2019/2020 events with Emily Tough as our Artist. This time the residency was for emerging artists and we changed the outcome from creating an open studio at Spring Fling to a final exhibition. The culmination of this will be an exhibition in Wigtown during Spring Fling 2020 and the unveiling of Emily’s project to create puppets inspired by the people and stories she encountered during Wigtown Book Festival and the town itself. Emily’s Exhibition The Print Room, 11 North Main Street, Wigtown, DG8 9JE 23 – 25 May 2020 After Spring Fling the exhibition will continue at 11 North Main Street, Wigtown until the 30th June 2020. I paint still life and landscape direct from nature. Living in Dumfries and Galloway, I am influenced by the artists who loved this area in the past, including the Glasgow Boys. My work is in the Scottish contemporary style with an emphasis on form and colour.

My art responds to ecological concerns: northerly places, stories and narratives, artworks seen. I gather material mainly by walking, and back in the studio make paintings out of what I’ve collected, recorded and remembered.
My artwork explores how we experience nature, examining aesthetic elements that create emotional responses; concepts of transience and shifting atmosphere, depth and mystery, imperfection and patina. It considers the sense of space found in the complexity of natural habitats, and celebrates their colour and richness.

I paint from on site sketches and photographs, with a dollop of imagination thrown in. Generally, I use charcoal lines overlaid with dilute acrylic pigment. This year I’ve been inspired by some New England views, particularly the boats and colourful wooden lobster buoys.
I use laminated wood veneers to make wooden mobiles. I’m often inspired by a poem, but the pieces change as I make them. I enjoy hinting at shapes and combining images; flames become feathers, birds become fish parts. The movement is also a vital consideration.
What to expect: Original paintings, prints and cards will be for sale. I usually have on show montages of photographs illustrating how some of the works progressed from the original sketch through the various layers of painting, right up to the finished work.
What to expect: Visitors will be able to see the tools, equipment and processes involved in creating a mobile. Small card kits will be available for children (and adults) to colour in and make bird mobiles of their own to take home. There will also be refreshments!

Suitable for all ages (with parental guidance due to a hot wire). Izzy Leach (Studio 20, p28): (Studio 20, p28): Photography workshops which are accessible to all ages and abilities. Laura Derby (Studio 21, p28): People of all ages love to see the strands of yarn instantly form into the tufted rug textile. We know that for some, taking children into studios with breakable objects is a bit daunting so we’ve pulled together information on some family friendly studios and activities at this year’s Spring Fling Open Studios.
Jo Gallant (Studio 41, p41): Have-a-go decoration of a fabric bag appeals to children and adults. Philippa Sinclair (Studio 52, p49): Try simple printing with sponge and foam in the children’s discovery corner. And for older ages, a chance to use silk paint and to take away a simple scarf.
Janet Hughes (Studio 82, p69): I learned, as a child, basic weave structures, on tapestry looms and wish to introduce all ages to how cloth is made. Young children (with accompanying adults) basic weave with older children and adults the opportunity to learn more in-depth about the craft.
Ailsa Black (Studio 53, p49): This venue is especially suitable for families with a well-run cafe and a children’s’ corners with free art activities.

Heather Blanchard (Studio 87, p71): We are very family friendly and welcome children. We have a large garden and small field if visitors want to picnic.

My style is loose and bold using gouache and ink applied with bamboo. Galloway landscape influences my work in a semi abstract fashion. Trees and seasons are increasingly strong contributors.

I love exploring the outdoors – always researching for my paintings, which try to evoke the fresh air feeling of being there in colour, light and shadows, with naturalistic or semi-abstract approaches. Galloway seascapes predominate: atmospheric, dramatic mountains views from the Highlands and Cumbria also feature.

NEW STUDIO
My artwork reflects a sensitivity to composition and colour and is a natural complement to my career as a designer. Freed from digital constraints, I have transferred my knowledge of balance and aesthetics to different media, spontaneously combining colours and textures to create organic forms.
I am a Polish visual artist, combining a love of painting, textiles, interiors. My work is inspired by the beauty, uniqueness of Scottish landscapes, driven by a dynamic colour, expressive markmaking. It’s echoing intensity of natural patterns found between sea, glens and sky crafting abstract.
What to expect: Our gallery will showcase a range of my original acrylic mixed media works, prints and cards as well as other works in wood, resin and ink. The on-site framing shop will be offering 10% discounts and refreshments will be available. Well-behaved dogs are welcome!
What to expect: In the studio, you will see painting and fabrics ranging from robust canvas to delicate small pieces, prints and drawings. I will be developing work, so visitors can see how I build texture and colours within my artwork.

I’m a conceptual artist, filmmaker and model maker. Sometimes the models are small and to scale, more recently I’ve been remodelling neglected buildings (and caravans).
I am currently working on a series of paintings that explore ideas of childhood expectation versus adult reality and memory. I present these in a collection of conceptual surreal self portraits painted in a very traditional way. I intend to challenge the viewers expectation and perception.
What to expect: Models of domestic interiors with tours in character of the Hannah Hoch and Kurt Schwitters art-houses (two n126 caravans repurposed with Dougie Sharpe and Denise Zygadlo) and an exploration of wallpapers at no 1 St Mary St drawing on fragments of discarded materials found locally.

Working mainly with resin I create pieces which combine a bold colour palette with pattern. Some pieces have magnets, the bangles will stick to each other and create bangle stacks. Other pieces are reversible, mismatch is also a strong element within my work.

What to expect: I’ll have on display new work along with my popular collections, and some end of line pieces. To give a better idea of my working processes as I’m not in my own studio I’ll have a little slide show running.

I make violins by hand, using a combination of age old craft and new technology. I focus on optimising sound quality and producing a beautiful finish for each instrument and the rich golden varnish I make from local ingredients, is a distinguishing feature of my violins.
I am a painter and printmaker. Current work is a response to the Peak District landscape and mesolithic and neolithic archaeological sites and the influence of shamanic cultures on people. I incorporate both the seen landscape and the unseen “sense of place” into my work.
What to expect: See my instruments in their various stages of construction, the specialist tonewoods and hand tools used for construction. Smell the local propolis and pine resins mixed to make varnish. Hear the violins. Musicians are welcome to come and play throughout the day.

The world of textiles is dominated by two main weaves. As a trained textile designer I enjoy using the multitude of other weave structures along with the physicality of handloom weaving. I weave sustainable wool and linen which I make into utilitarian products.
I specialise in contemporary wooden furniture, creating your very own cherished heirloom– perhaps from your own timber, bog oak, or other native wood. Each piece of furniture art has its own narrative. I will also have limited edition and exhibition pieces displayed and to purchase.
What to expect: In the setting of a working yarn store, I will over the event, hope to show all aspect of handloom weaving with bookable have-a-go workshops for all ages on contemporary tapestry looms with the opportunity to purchase my distinctive woven wears.
What to expect: Visitors have the opportunity to view my working environment as a furniture designer/maker, the how and the why. Samples of beautiful local wood together with mock-ups, partfinished and many completed pieces. There will also be more work with the stunning Solway Bog oak.

SPRINGBACK
I’m a potter making both thrown and hand built work. My pots have quite a graphic quality and drawing directly onto them means each one is completely unique. I have two quite different ranges inspired by both native wild plants and geometric, mid century pattern.
I’m a goldsmith working exclusively with ethical and sustainable precious metals, gemstones and diamonds. The majority of my work is to commission, often for engagement rings and other special pieces. My engagement ring collection will be on show. I’ll be happy to discuss potential commissions/remodelling.
What to expect: I decorate using the technique of sgraffito; each piece is coated in a contrasting coloured clay and the design is scratched through to reveal the white clay body. I intend to demonstrate this technique throughout the weekend so visitors can see work-in-progress.
What to expect: This year, I’ll be showing my work alongside Daniel Lacey. As well as pieces from my collections, visitors will be able to see a selection of beautiful ethical gemstones, images of past commissions, work-in-progress and films of me at work.
Prize draw for everyone who visits the studio.

Upland Projects
region by taking our artists and makers into the classroom to inspire the next generation.
Upland is a bold, ambitious, rurally-based visual art, design and craft development organisation that evolved from Spring Fling CIC and was established in 2015.
Our current projects include:
Spring Fling Open Studios continues as Upland’s flagship event but we now offer a year round programme delivering a range of projects, events and exhibitions working with young people, emerging and established artists and makers. As the visual arts and craft development organisation for Dumfries & Galloway, Upland aims to provide a network for learning and sharing, offering advice and support to creative practitioners whilst aiming to inspire and educate a wide range of audiences to participate in and be supportive of visual arts and crafts. We work to connect the artists and makers based in Dumfries & Galloway to new audiences through our ongoing exhibition programme and continue to develop links with schools throughout the 74 Spring Fling Open Studios 23-25 May 2020
Modern Makers A programme for a small group of young people from Dumfries and Galloway to work intensively with a professional maker to learn craft skills. This year marks the fifth year of the Modern Makers expanded programme and sees young people working with renowned glass artist Amanda Simmons. Previous years have focused on ceramics, woodwork, costume design and printmaking. An exhibition celebrating the programme opens in early May at Gracefield Art Centre, please see page11 for details. Emerge A 9 month programme aimed at early career artists and makers. Participants are mentored by a professional artist, awarded a bursary for the creation of new work and are invited to take part in Spring Fling. See page 11 for details of this year’s recipients.
Artist Residencies & Outreach Programme This year we are delivering a project which focuses on the heritage and history of Langholm’s textile industry. Making Connections combines an artist residency, commission, workshops and a school’s project to creatively explore and celebrate this rich heritage through both people and place, past and present. Various events will take place over the duration of the project with a final exhibition planned at Hawick Museum in October 2020. This year also sees the delivery of the second Artful Migration residency, which offers artists a unique insight into the migratory birds of Dumfries & Galloway through partnership working with local nature reserves. The programme has been developed in partnership with Ginnie Wollaston and Nicholas Parton Philip of Moving Souls Dance with support from WWT Caerlaverock and NTS Threave Garden & Estate. The 2020 artist-inresidence programme will focus on the Osprey.
Both these projects will be running throughout May so if you are visiting for Spring Fling please check our website for details of any coinciding events. Later in the year, Upland members will be heading to Newcastle for a mixed exhibition at The Biscuit Factory. More information on this coming soon!
